BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford men’s basketball team hits the road in Southern Conference play as they face Furman tomorrow night at 5 p.m. central time. The Bulldogs enter the game with a 17-4 record on the season and are 7-1 in SoCon play. Furman enters with a 16-5 record and is 4-4 in league play.
The Samford Bulldogs are coming off a 77-61 win over Wofford on Saturday. The Bulldogs played one of their better opening halves of the season as they jumped out to a 42-26 lead and held Wofford to 33% shooting. The Dogs broke the two-game attendance record at the Pete Hanna Center in the past two games against ETSU and Wofford. The meeting between the Bulldogs and the Paladins is the 39th all-time, with Furman holding a 26-12 record in the series overall.
The Bulldogs broke out of a mini-shooting slump last game by knocking down 11 of the 22 three-point attempts on the night. The Bulldogs continue to be a top-10 three-point shooting team in the nation, making 10.9 threes per game which is the sixth best in the country. Defensively, Samford is 8th in the country in caused turnovers forced per game at 16.5.
Samford sits 95th in the NET rankings, the highest-ranked team in the Southern Conference. The Dogs are 14th in the country in assists per game, averaging 17.5 per game. A big problem is offense. In ACC play we are averaging 66.5 points per game, ranked 17th in the 18-team ACC. Our field goal percentage in ACC play is 42%, ranked 16th. The Blue Devils are cooking. They currently have the nation’s longest winning streak at 13 games. Their only two losses on the season are to #12 Kansas (72-75) and #9 Kentucky (72-77), a pair of teams you might have heard of, both in November while these youngsters were still learning to play.

A legislative petition asking the U.S. Supreme Court to reconsider its 2015 decision that legalized same-sex marriage is heading to the Idaho House floor.
After nearly two hours of testimony, House Joint Memorial 1 passed the Idaho House State Affairs Committee in a 13-2 vote on Wednesday, receiving support from all the Republicans on the committee and opposing votes from its two Democrats. The memorial is addressed to the U.S. Supreme Court and pushes to restore the authority of defining marriage to the states. It asks the court to reconsider its 2015 decision in Obergefell v. Hodges that legalized same-sex marriage.
Sponsor Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, said its purpose is to restore states’ rights.
“We’re sending this clear message from Idaho,” Scott told the committee. “We don’t want our laws and our constitution trampled on, and it should be our decision what we want to do in a state.”
A memorial is not a bill, and its passage in both chambers would not carry the weight of the law.
Supporters of memorial discuss faith, states’ rights
Four people testified in favor of the legislation, citing their Christian faith and belief that Obergefell v. Hodges undermines states’ rights.
“Defining marriage is a state issue as it is not enumerated in our federal constitution,” Katherine Hartley said, an attorney the Pacific Justice Institute, a nonprofit legal group focused on defending faith and family issues.
Former Rep. Julianne Young, R-Blackfoot, also testified in support of the memorial. She said she was testifying on behalf of her faith and herself as a woman, wife and mother.
“I believe that the state of Idaho should have the opportunity to choose to align their policy with these timeless truths,” Young told the committee.
Others who testified included representatives from anti-LGBTQ+ organization Mass Resistance and conservative Christian Idaho Family Policy Center.
Support outnumbered by opposition, LGBTQ+ community
Upon Scott’s introduction of the memorial, dozens of individuals walked out of the committee room in protest of the legislation, and 17 people testified against the legislation— including individuals in the LGBTQ+ community, health care providers, students and religious leaders.

“During the Jim Crow era, segregation was justified based on states’ rights,” Rep. Todd Achilles, D-Boise, told Scott. “And as a nation, we addressed those discriminatory state laws in the wake of the Civil War with the 14th Amendment … Where do we draw the line? If we can justify in Idaho that we can discriminate against a same-sex couple, then who else is open to discrimination?”
The Rev. Josh Lee, a pastor at Boise First United Church of Christ, opposed the legislation, sharing his experience as a Christian and gay man.
“I knew growing up that I loved Jesus, I loved being a pastor, and I loved men, and I had no idea how these three things could ever coexist in the world,” Lee said. “It took me many years to figure that out.”
Lee said he went to conversion therapy three different times in high school, and had contemplated his own suicide before meeting other Christians who supported the LGBTQ+ community, he said. Coming from New York, he said he moved to Idaho with his husband to advocate for the rights of LGBTQ+ people.
“Instead of taking the rights away from people, I urge this Legislature this morning to focus on the issues that truly impact Idahoans, like education, health care and infrastructure,” he said.
Koii Lauritsen, a Hailey resident, also testified in opposition to the legislation, sharing with the committee that he was raised by a lesbian couple.
“My mothers sat through every terrible school play and elementary Christmas concert,” he said. “They taught me how to ride a bike, they taught me how to throw a ball, how to drive stick and how to shave.”
Lauritsen asked the committee to set aside its concerns over state rights’ and think of his family.
“I will not ask that you understand, embrace or even accept my family, but I will ask that you show it and others like it the respect they deserve, because my lesbian parents deserve as much respect as any other two people who are trying to live the American dream,” he said.
The memorial now heads to the floor of the Idaho House of Representatives for consideration. If the House votes to pass the memorial, it would be sent next to the Idaho Senate for consideration.

A$AP Rocky assault trial heads to opening statements
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A jury of five men and seven women was seated Thursday for the trial of rapper A$AP Rocky, who is charged with firing a gun at a former friend in 2021.
Opening statements at the Los Angeles trial of the 36-year-old hip-hop superstar and fashion maven will begin Friday after the 12 jurors and four alternates are sworn in.
Rocky turned down a prosecution plea offer of 180 days in jail to risk years in prison if the jurors find him guilty of two felony counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm. He has pleaded not guilty and his lawyer says he committed no crime.
He opted instead to risk trial on two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, charges that with conviction bring a penalty of up to 24 years in prison.
It took the two sides 2 1/2 days to pick the jurors from a pool of more than a hundred candidates who packed into a downtown LA courtroom. Those chosen include a woman who is a podcast editor and actor, and a man who has worked for more than 20 years at Trader Joe’s. The last alternate seated is a retired judge.
Many were excused for cause, others sent away by one of the two sides. Each had 10 jurors they could excuse without a reason. The defense used seven of their challenges, the prosecution just two.
One man questioned Thursday works as a civilian with the Los Angeles Police Department and has extensive ties to law enforcement including a cousin who was on the case’s witness list but is not expected to be called.
After the judge declined to dismiss him for cause, Rocky’s lawyer Joe Tacopina took him off the jury.
“Here’s a shocker, we’re going to thank and excuse juror number 27.”
Attitudes toward police were a common topic during jury selection. In several heated moments, Superior Court Judge Mark Arnold, a former sheriff’s deputy, questioned those who said they mistrusted police, nearly debating with some of them.
He asked one woman, a speech pathologist, whether he should mistrust all speech pathologists based on his bad experience with one.
When another woman brought up police corruption, Arnold demanded she “tell me about the documented corruption at LAPD that you must’ve either read about or heard.”
When she brought up the Rodney King case, he asked, “You are going to hold against current police something that happened before they were born?”
Many questions were about the fame of both Rocky and especially Rihanna, his longtime life partner and the mother of his two toddler children. She was not in court Thursday, and it’s not certain whether she will show up during the trial.
“What if Rihanna comes here to court, is it going to be hard for you to look over there, and see the defendant’s family, and deliver a guilty verdict?” Deputy District Attorney John Lewin asked one woman.
After a long pause, she said “yes.”
Rocky is accused of firing three or four shots at Terell Ephron, a friend from his teenage years, on the streets of Hollywood in 2021. Ephron said the shots grazed his knuckles. Rocky has pleaded not guilty, and his lawyers say he wasn’t even holding a real gun, but a starter pistol he used as a prop.
