  • Michael Page: If Shara Magomedov shoots takedowns at UFC Saudi Arabia, ‘he’s never going to hear the end of it’

Michael Page will have his hands full with what should be one of the most exciting fights of his career at UFC Saudi Arabia this Saturday.

After 21 consecutive MMA fights at welterweight, “MVP” returns to the middleweight division for an important clash against the unbeaten Shara Magomedov, who’s 15-0 with four straight wins in the UFC.

It’s a fight Page requested, and one he fully expected to get once the UFC had a chance to consider his suggestion.

“It’s the ‘MVP’ effect,” Page said Wednesday on Uncrowned’s “The Ariel Helwani Show.” “I think if I put certain things over there, I think everyone just became excited with just the potential of that fight. I feel like I’ve got that style where the UFC will look at me and allow me to match up with any other good fighter anywhere, so it wasn’t surprising at all.”

Page, 37, has always been one of the longer and rangier fighters at welterweight, effectively using distance as a weapon with his karate-based striking. Making the cut to 170 pounds has never been too much of an issue, Page said, but the Magomedov matchup was mostly about landing a fun striking challenge.

Ultimately, a title at welterweight remains the primary target for Page. Since the Brit arrived in Bellator in 2014, he’s pursued gold in the division, coming close twice.

“I’ll definitely return to ’85 at some point, but the goal is always going to be 170,” Page said. “I want the belt at 170. I think it’s a great time in that division to really pursue and make big steps towards the belt. But as you say, every now and again, if there’s a great fight to be had, I may take some more pit stops.

“Unless it’s a really exciting fight, the next up is definitely 170.”

When he’s been dealt matchups with fellow striking specialists in the past, “MVP” has famously flourished and delivered some of the most exciting highlights in MMA history. Opponents have typically had to use a more grappling-heavy approach to beat him, though even that has left him with only three defeats in his 26-fight career.

Against a fellow flashy striker like Magomedov, Page doesn’t expect to do much wrestling — at least as part of the initial game plan.

“It’s exciting, it’s explosive, it’s dangerous, but there are patterns that I see,” Page said of Magomedov. “There are patterns that I’m going to look to exploit. My game tends to frustrate. So I’m going to try to incorporate the game plans that we’ve made specifically for him, and then go and go and do what MVP does best.

“I think he’s going to be [too] stubborn to shoot [takedowns], because if he shoots, he’s never going to hear the end of it. For the rest of his career, that one time ‘MVP’ made you shoot. So he’s going to be very stubborn, but again, it’s different when you’re taking damage and you feel like you need to just be safe, so it may happen.

“This is what made it so much more exciting to want to call out and want to want to make happen,” Page concluded. “So I’m just looking forward to this fight because I always put myself up there with any top striker.”

Michael Page, also known as “Venom,” is gearing up for his fight against Shara Magomedov at UFC Saudi Arabia. The welterweight contender has made it clear that if Magomedov attempts to shoot takedowns during their bout, he’s in for a world of taunting.

Page, who is known for his flashy striking and unorthodox fighting style, has warned Magomedov that if he tries to take the fight to the ground, he “will never hear the end of it.” The British fighter is confident in his abilities to keep the fight standing and showcase his skills in front of a new audience in Saudi Arabia.

Fans can expect an exciting clash of styles when Page and Magomedov step into the octagon. Will Magomedov risk the wrath of Page by attempting takedowns, or will he try to stand and trade with the dynamic striker? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – if Magomedov goes for the takedown, he better be prepared for the consequences.

  • You Can Hear Him Now

One of the best-known characters in modern advertising is returning to work.

Actor Paul Marcarelli played a “Test Man” for Verizon, clad in a gray jacket and horn-rimmed glasses for nearly a decade in dozens of commercials that that had him checking on the status of the telecommunications company’s technology and asking aloud, “Can you hear me now?” Chances are that anyone watching TV regularly during that era could.

In a new 60-second commercial, “Test Man” resurfaces — working with, of all people, celebrated astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The famous space explorer takes to roaming the earth in an effort to test out the effectiveness of satellites that help boost Verizon’s network. “Can you text me now?” asks Aldrin from different locations around the world. “Hey,” says “Test Man” in space. “That’s my line.”

“Test Man” became a marketing success for Verizon for years, but flunked out after Marcarelli defected and went to work for rival Sprint in 2016 after his original employer moved on to different promotional strategies. Big advertisers spend millions on developing characters for commercials, but Marcarelli wasn’t some animated mascot, like the Green Giant or Pillsbury Doughboy, and the idea of paying him to not work for rivals may not have occurred to executives at the time. In the Sprint ad, Marcarelli said, “Hey, I’m Paul and I used to ask if you could hear me now at Verizon. Not anymore.”

The company paid homage to the character in June with a commercial that featured a different actor playing an engineer who utters the famous phrase, only to be followed by dozens of other consumers using Verizon to “play me now,” “stay with me now” and “meet me now.” The spot proved popular, according to a company spokeswoman, who notes “there were no hard feelings” about Marcarelli’s defection to a competitor.

The new spot aims to show how Verizon can defeat “dead zones” by using satellite connectivity to thwart conditions in remote areas where traditional fiber connections are not available. Based on (consumer) reception to the proposition, the commercial may also serve as a study of how to revive a popular Madison Avenue personality after a years-long absence.

Have you ever felt like God is distant or silent? Like your prayers are bouncing off the ceiling and not reaching Him? I want to encourage you today that you can hear Him now.

God is always speaking, but sometimes we are too distracted or too busy to listen. We need to create space in our lives to tune in to His voice. Whether it’s through prayer, reading His Word, or simply being still and quiet, God is always ready to speak to us.

Don’t let doubt or fear cloud your ability to hear Him. Trust that He is always near, always listening, and always ready to guide you. Take a moment today to be still and listen for His voice. You may be surprised at what you hear.

You can hear Him now. Open your heart, open your ears, and listen for the still, small voice of God speaking to you. He is always there, always ready to guide you, and always ready to speak to you. Trust in Him and His love for you, and know that you can hear Him now.

  • Judge to hear arguments over new trial request in Jennifer Crumbley case

An Oakland County judge denied most of a request from Jennifer Crumbley to have her acquitted or given a new trial in connection to the Oxford High School shooting.

WATCH THE FRIDAY HEARING LIVE HERE

Watch below: Michael Dezsi, new attorney for Jennifer Crumbley, speaks on motion to toss conviction

Michael Dezsi, new attorney for Jennifer Crumbley, speaks on motion to toss conviction

Crumbley, the mother of the shooter, was found guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter last year. Her husband, James Crumbley, was convicted on the same charges. They were each sentenced to 10-15 years in prison.

In December, Jennifer and her new attorney, Michael Dezski, filed a motion to get the sentence overturned.

However, on Thursday, Oakland County Judge Cheryl Matthews denied most of the request. She did not make a decision on whether or not Jennifer should get a new trial based on proffer agreements the prosecution made with two witnesses in the case.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald and the prosecution team gave those agreements to Oxford High School counselor Shawn Hopkins and former dean of students Nicholas Ejak, so the statements they provided to prosecutors could not be used to file charges against them.

They were the last administrators to meet with the shooter before his rampage in the school.

Watch below: Digging into the proffer agreements given to witnesses in the Crumbley trials

Looking into the proffer agreements used in the Crumbley trials

“It is an agreement between a prosecutor’s office and an individual that whatever they say as long as they’re truthful will not be used against them,” Criminal Defense Attorneys of Michigan President Arthur Weiss said.

The prosecution reportedly never gave those agreements to Jennifer’s first defense attorney, Shannon Smith.

On Friday, Matthews will hear arguments over the proffer agreements during a motion hearing.

A judge is set to hear arguments over a new trial request in the high-profile case of Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of Ethan Crumbley, the teenage suspect in the Oxford High School shooting.

Jennifer Crumbley’s defense team has filed a motion requesting a new trial, citing alleged errors in the trial proceedings that they argue could have affected the outcome of the case. The prosecution has countered that the trial was fair and that there is no basis for a new trial.

The judge will hear arguments from both sides and will ultimately decide whether to grant or deny the motion for a new trial. The outcome of this hearing could have significant implications for Jennifer Crumbley’s legal future.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story as the hearing unfolds.

  • Thousands Flock to Berry College to Hear Civil Rights Icon Speak

Civil rights icon Ruby Bridges, one of the first Black students to integrate an all-white elementary school in 1960, spoke to nearly 2,000 people at Berry College on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Her conversation, facilitated by Berry student Sydney Layne in the College Chapel was also simulcast to an overflow crowd comprised of students, staff, faculty and community members. Berry officials estimated about 2,000 people attended.

Bridges said she was one of 150 Black children selected to take a rigorous day-long test to make sure they were smart enough to attend the integrated schools.

“I remember taking this test and I remember that because it was the first time that I had taken the streetcar in New Orleans. And that was exciting for me, you know. I really need you all to keep in mind that what protected me was the innocence of a child,” she told the audience.

Only six children were able to pass the test, which Bridges said was set up to eliminate students. Then eventually due to pressure, five of the children dropped out.

“So the first day came, I was still thinking that I am just about the smartest person in the city and I remember that all of my parents’ friends came over to the house that morning to dress me for school.
It seemed like a really, really big deal. And that did not happen on my first day going to kindergarten,” Bridges said.

There was a knock at the door and four “very tall white men” were standing at the door. “I remember looking at them and thinking to myself, who are they? And who told them I needed to ride?” she said.

The men were U.S. marshals to escort her safely to William Frantz Elementary school.

“The car turned the corner (to the school) and I saw what most of the country saw.
Lots of people standing out in front of the school and they were screaming and shouting and were waving their hands and throwing things,” she said, noting that being in New Orleans she assumed it was some kind of Mardi Gras parade.

“How was I to know that the crowd outside was there to harm me, that they didn’t want me there. No six-year-old would come to that conclusion unless you told them. And my parents didn’t do that. I think that was the best decision for them to make. But it speaks to the fact that racism really is a grown-up disease. Each and every one of our babies come into the world with a clean heart, a fresh start in life. That’s our gift.”

Bridges currently works as a Civil Rights activist, author and speaker. She established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to provide leadership and training programs to inspire community leaders to embrace diversity. She was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame in March 2024.

The event at Berry was part of the Conson Wilson Lecture Series and is sponsored by GHD Foundation, Berry’s corporate diversity partner. This school year is also the 60th anniversary of the college’s integration and the start of Be Love Week which is a time to embody Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of service and Berry’s motto, “not to be ministered unto, but to minister.” From January 20–24, 2025, students, staff, and faculty will join forces with community partners to focus on housing support, food assistance, and youth development.

Berry College, located in Rome, Georgia, was buzzing with excitement as thousands of people gathered to hear civil rights icon and activist, John Lewis, speak on campus.

Lewis, who is a prominent figure in the civil rights movement and a current U.S. congressman, delivered a powerful and inspiring speech to the massive crowd. His message of equality, justice, and unity resonated with the audience, many of whom were moved to tears by his words.

The event was organized by the college’s student government association and drew attendees from all walks of life, including students, faculty, community members, and politicians. The overwhelming turnout demonstrated the enduring impact and importance of Lewis’s work in the fight for civil rights.

As the sun set over the picturesque campus, Lewis’s words served as a reminder of the progress that has been made in the struggle for equality, while also highlighting the work that still needs to be done. The event was a powerful reminder of the power of one person’s voice to inspire change and unite a community.

Overall, the event was a huge success, and attendees left feeling inspired and motivated to continue the fight for justice and equality in their own lives and communities. Thousands flocked to Berry College to hear a true civil rights icon speak, and they left with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to create a more just and equitable world.

  • Upset about your credit card interest rate? The CFPB wants to hear from you

Americans have accumulated over $1 trillion in credit card debt. For context, a stack of one trillion dollar bills would wrap around the Earth more than three times.

Almost more troubling than the total amount of U.S. credit card debt are the sky-high interest rates consumers owe on their balances—APRs that have been climbing higher as market interest rates rise. In late 2021, the average interest rate for a credit card was about 14.51%. By 2024, it was over 21%—and many Americans find themselves with cards charging as high as 30%.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has begun an investigation into credit card interest rates. The agency is encouraging consumers to submit their thoughts on their rates, terms, and conditions.

“As Americans pay off their credit card bills from holiday spending, many are concerned about credit card interest rates that often surpass 30%,” said CFPB Director Rohit Chopra on X, announcing the initiative. “A few credit card companies dominate the market, and average interest rates have creeped up significantly over the past decade.”

CFPB is seeking public feedback in seven areas:

    • The terms of credit card agreements and the practices of credit card issuers

    • Whether credit card plan disclosures of terms, fees, and other expenses are helpful

    • The adequacy of protections against unfair or deceptive practices relating to credit card plans

    • The cost and availability of consumer credit cards

    • The safety and soundness of credit card issuers

    • The use of risk-based pricing for consumer credit cards

    • Consumer credit card product innovation

Consumers can respond to individual questions or comment generally about how the credit card market is functioning. Following analysis of consumer feedback, the CFPB will publish additional research to inform the policy debate.

The bureau is mandated to conduct this research every two years under orders of the CARD Act. The 2023 report noted that add-on products, fee harvester cards, and deferred interest products were still major concerns in the credit card market. Transparency issues, including online disclosures, rewards products, and grace periods, are also major worries.

The CFPB has not been shy about its feelings about credit card companies. Last year, a new regulation capped most credit card late fees at $8. The CFPB also announced it was cracking down on deceptive credit card reward tactics.

“Large credit card issuers too often play a shell game to lure people into high-cost cards, boosting their own profits while denying consumers the rewards they’ve earned,” Chopra wrote in late 2024.

While Chopra and CFPB’s focus on credit cards, interest rates, and points worries some consumers who enjoy cashback bonuses, the future of the CFPB work is unclear. There remain questions about whether the Trump administration will replace Chopra or dismantle the agency.

During his campaign, Trump said he wanted to cap credit card interest rates at 10%.

Fortune reached out to the American Banking Association, CFPB, Capital One, and Chase for comment but did not hear back. Citi declined to comment.

This story was originally featured on Fortune.com

Are you frustrated with the high interest rate on your credit card? The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) wants to hear from you.

Credit card interest rates can often be overwhelming and make it difficult to pay off debt. The CFPB is committed to protecting consumers and ensuring fair and transparent practices in the financial industry.

If you have experienced high interest rates or other issues with your credit card, the CFPB wants to know about it. You can submit a complaint through their website or contact them directly to share your concerns.

Your feedback is important in helping the CFPB identify and address issues in the credit card industry. Don’t hesitate to speak up and let your voice be heard. Your input could lead to positive changes that benefit consumers like you.

  • Bryan County Schools to hear residents’ concerns about house bill 581

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is photographed.

Gov. Brian Kemp signed the homestead exemption bill last year. Now, it is up to schools and local municipalities to decide whether they want to opt in or out of the bill. The city of Pembroke and the city of Richmond Hill opted in but some residents in Bryan County fear the school district’s decision to opt out of House Bill 581 will cost them more money in the long run.

The bill, which was passed in March 2024, states the, “Statewide exemption can be used in addition to other homestead exemptions that are not base year value exemptions. If another base year exemption exists locally, the exemption of greater benefit to the homeowner shall be provided.”

The Bryan County School District is choosing to opt out of the new homestead exemption opportunity outlined in HB 581. According to the district’s December newsletter, here are the four reasons the district has opted out:

Bryan County Schools will be hosting a community forum to hear residents’ concerns about House Bill 581. This bill, which was recently passed by the Georgia State Legislature, has raised many questions and uncertainties among residents in the Bryan County area.

The forum will provide an opportunity for residents to voice their concerns, ask questions, and engage in a dialogue with school officials about the potential impact of House Bill 581 on the local community. The school district is committed to transparency and open communication with residents, and this forum is an important step in ensuring that all voices are heard and considered in the decision-making process.

The forum will take place on [date] at [location]. Residents are encouraged to come and participate in the discussion. Your input is valuable and will help inform the school district’s response to House Bill 581. Let’s work together to ensure the best possible outcome for our community.
