  • A$AP Rocky assault trial jury hears opening arguments in alleged 2021 shooting case

Opening arguments began on Friday in the trial of A$AP Rocky. The Grammy-nominated rapper and partner to pop star Rihanna faces two felony charges related to a 2021 incident in Hollywood where he is accused of allegedly shooting at a former friend and music collaborator.

The hip-hop star, whose legal name is Rakim Mayers, was charged on Aug. 15, 2022 with two counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm for allegedly firing a handgun twice in the direction of the alleged victim during a confrontation.

Mayers pleaded not guilty. If convicted, the New York rapper could face up to 24 years in prison.

Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Paul Przelomiec delivered the prosecution’s opening statements, arguing before the jury that a series of videos show that the rapper fired a gun at Terell Ephron.

Mayers and Ephron, who is also known by the moniker A$AP Relli, were childhood friends and both part of the Harlem-based rap collective A$AP Mob.

“This is not a complicated case. The evidence will show the events in this case were captured on surveillance video,” Przelomiec said.

Prosecutors also presented the jury with a series of maps, identifying photos, a 911 call from the night of the incident and several videos captured by surveillance cameras in the area.

Przelomiec asked the jury to “not leave your common sense at the door” and “return the only just verdict there is.”

In the defense’s opening statements, lead attorney Joe Tacopina claimed that Mayers is “innocent” and that Ephron is seeking financial gain.

“This is about one man’s lies, jealousy, and greed,” Tacopina told the jury, casting the case as “all about money.”

Asked if Ephron is expected to take the witness stand in this case, his attorney Jamal Tooson did not respond to ABC News’ requests for comment.

Tacopina also told the jury that they will hear from multiple witnesses who will testify that the gun seen in the surveillance video is “absolutely nothing more than a prop gun” that is often used in movies and music videos.

Ephron came forward as the victim of the alleged assault and filed a civil lawsuit on Aug. 10, 2022, accusing Mayers of assault, battery, inflicting emotional distress and negligence. He claimed that he was “stuck by bullet projectile/fragments” during the alleged assault.

Court records show that Mayers denied all wrongdoing in his response to the complaint.

Ephron also filed a defamation lawsuit on Sept. 19, 2023, naming Mayers and his legal team, including lead attorney Tacopina. Court documents show that in their answer to the complaint, Mayers and his attorneys denied “each and every allegation” outlined in the suit.

According to court records, both cases are pending.

Opening statements began after a jury of seven women and five men was selected on Thursday, after Mayers turned down a plea deal offered to him on Tuesday, prosecutors and Tacopina confirmed to ABC News.

In a high-profile trial that has captured the attention of fans and legal experts alike, the jury in the assault case against rapper A$AP Rocky heard opening arguments today. The prosecution alleges that A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, was involved in a 2021 shooting incident that left one man injured.

According to the prosecution, A$AP Rocky and his entourage were involved in a physical altercation with the alleged victim, who was shot during the altercation. The defense, however, claims that A$AP Rocky was acting in self-defense and that he did not intend to harm anyone.

As the trial gets underway, both sides are expected to present evidence and witness testimony to support their respective arguments. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for A$AP Rocky’s career and reputation, as well as for the broader conversation around self-defense and celebrity accountability.

Stay tuned for updates as the trial progresses and the jury deliberates on this high-profile case.

  • Congestion pricing NYC: Judge in New Jersey hears last-minute challenge to halt rollout on Sunday

Congestion pricing NYC: Judge in New Jersey hears last-minute challenge to halt rollout on Sunday

FORT LEE, New Jersey (WABC) — This is the last hurdle to congestion pricing going into effect. Both sides were in federal court in New Jersey pleading their cases.

The federal hearing wrapped Friday afternoon. Both sides presented their cases and a judge said he will make a decision in the near future.

All along, this has been a tale of two states with the Hudson River as the dividing line. The governor of New York wants the plan. The governor of New Jersey does not.

The traffic cameras are up and the new pricing signs are in place ahead of Sunday morning’s start date. It’ll soon cost drivers extra to head south of 60th Street, but new jersey officials are trying to stop it, before it starts.

“It puts the health of our children and families at risk here in north jersey,” Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.)said.

On Thursday, Congressman Gottheimer stood with local representatives and community members in Fort Lee, New Jersey to call on a judge to put the brakes on the plan.

“New York’s plan to fix congestion is to give more of it to children in Jersey, by sending more smog into our homes and neighborhoods,” Gottheimer said. “This new Lung Tax will cost Jersey children and families more money to breathe worse air, punishing our lungs and wallets at the same time.”

The MTA fired back in response to the rally in Fort Lee.

“Nobody in their right mind should take transportation advice from the New Jersey politicians who have woefully failed to manage transit in their state while also endorsing higher tolls on their own roads and on Port Authority bridges and tunnels, and higher fares on NJ Transit,” said MTA Chief of Policy and External Relations John McCarthy in a statement. “Endless litigation over New York’s program to improve its transit and reduce traffic is the height of hypocrisy.”

While a federal judge on Friday considered issuing a temporary restraining order to halt the start date, supporters of the toll who live in New Jersey held a rally outside.

The new toll is expected reduce the amount of cars in the city by 80,000 and collect billions of dollars for much need transit improvements.

“It’s time to pay the piper here,” New York Governor Kathy Hochul said.

They’re hoping to convince more commuters to take public transit. At a time, some high profile crime has been reported underground.

“I used to go down to the subway without a care in the world and now I pay attention to my surroundings and stand back from the tracks,” one commuter told Eyewitness News.

Over the past two weeks, a man lit a woman on fire. In another case, a rider was pushed onto the subway tracks.

We found murders have doubled from 5 in 2023 to 10 last year leading to a 100 percent increase. Most other crimes have gone down during the same time period. Grand larceny, robbery, and burglary are down by double digits.

The governor says new transit cameras on every train and National Guard patrols have helped.

“I’m acknowledging there are frightening crimes for people. I’m not allowing them,” Hochul said.

On Friday, she announced new legislation that would make it easier for hospitals to commit patients with severe mental illness and for courts to order outpatient treatment.

It is unclear how the governor’s plan will fare in the state Legislature, which is controlled by Democrats and begins its annual legislative session later this month.

“We will have the resources to ensure that you have an efficient, on-time, better experience because we’re going to make the investments that should have been done over decades that were never done because it was too costly,” Hochul said.

Hochul believes the tolls don’t contradict her vision because she lowered the price of the new toll to 9 dollars. She added that more than 80 percent commuters already take public transit.

Any delay could give its opponents an opportunity to stop congestion pricing for good. President-elect Trump has already said he opposes the plan and would end it when he takes office. Supporters are attempting to turn the license plate readers on and start collecting revenue before Jan. 20.

On Sunday, New York City is set to launch its long-awaited congestion pricing plan, aimed at reducing traffic and raising funds for public transportation. However, just days before the rollout, a judge in New Jersey is hearing a last-minute challenge to halt the implementation of the plan.

The congestion pricing plan, which was approved by the state legislature in 2019, will charge drivers a fee to enter certain parts of Manhattan during peak hours. The goal is to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution while generating much-needed revenue for the city’s struggling public transit system.

Opponents of the plan argue that it unfairly targets low-income drivers and will only exacerbate traffic congestion in surrounding areas. They have filed a lawsuit seeking to block the rollout of the plan, citing concerns about its legality and potential negative impact on commuters.

The judge’s decision on whether to halt the implementation of congestion pricing in NYC is expected to come down to the wire, with the fate of the plan hanging in the balance. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Andy Roddick hears WTA stat which he thinks is ‘shocking for women’s tennis’

Andy Roddick hears WTA stat which he thinks is ‘shocking for women’s tennis’

Another thrilling WTA Tour season has been and gone, with the battle between Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek stealing the headlines.

Sabalenka overtook Swiatek as number one in October, with the Pole having occupied top spot for 50 weeks.

The Belarusian won the Australian Open and US Open, with Swiatek triumphing at the French Open as Barbora Krejcikova won Wimbledon.

Coco Gauff meanwhile recovered from her struggles to win the WTA Finals, with the American now third in the rankings.

It is, however, another young star in Mirra Andreeva that has just caught the eye of major champion Andy Roddick.

The WTA stat Andy thinks is ‘shocking for women’s tennis’

The 17-year-old has risen to 16th place on the WTA Tour, but her progression has caused concern for Roddick.

“Her ability, her variety, her ability to switch directions,” he said on the Served with Andy Roddick podcast.

“Even hiring Conchita Martinez as a coach and thinking where do I source wisdom. Those are very intelligent progressions on and off the court in 2024.

“What does she do in 2025? More of it. Let the progression take hold. It is simultaneously exciting and also the pragmatist in me is going, do the same thing for the next three months.

“And after that the next three months. It might not go perfectly but I think this is someone who is going to be holding a big trophy at some point.”

Jon Wertheim then commented: “Do you want to know a crazy stat? She is the only teenager in the top 100 I believe.”

Roddick responded: “That is shocking for women’s tennis too,” with Wertheim continuing: “When Monica Seles won eight majors as a teenager, Steffi [Graf] won the golden slam as a teenager. She is 17 so that means that she has nine more majors left before she turns 20.

“One thing that impresses me here is that we see young players – it’s LeBron [James], it’s Rafa [Nadal], it’s Jennifer Capriati and there’s physical maturity.

“I’m not sure that’s the case here, it’s more emotional maturity.  She plays a really tactical, strategic game.”

What did ‘incredible’ Mirra Andreeva achieve in 2024?

Andreeva looks set for big things in 2025, with the 17-year-old having enjoyed a superb year on the court.

Daria Kasatkina called Andreeva ‘incredible’ after beating her in the Ningbo Open final, with the latter having picked up several impressive wins.

The Russian teenager beat Czech duo Barbora Krejcikova and Karolina Muchova before falling to Kasatkina, who is now ranked ninth in the world.

Shortly before that, Andreeva played her sister Erika at the Wuhan Open, where the latter emerged victorious.
