  • De’Aaron Fox Trade Talks, Spurs, Heat, Nets, 76ers, Hawks

    Sarah Stier/Getty Images

With De’Aaron Fox having a destination in mind ahead of his 2026 free agency, the Sacramento Kings are listening to trade inquiries on their star point guard and have received numerous calls from teams with interest.

Before the latest news on Fox, Sacramento was trying to upgrade its roster by discussing trades with the Brooklyn Nets for forward Cam Johnson and the Utah Jazz for forward John Collins, league sources told HoopsHype. It’s unclear how Fox’s trade market will affect Sacramento’s discussions for Johnson and Collins.

Sacramento’s most consistent trade discussions had centered around Kevin Huerter, Trey Lyles, and future draft pick compensation, sources said.

The prevailing belief within league circles is that Fox is eyeing the San Antonio Spurs looking ahead toward his free agency.

The Spurs have max cap space for the summer of 2026 as Fox will enter unrestricted free agency.

San Antonio also has young assets in Devin Vassell and Stephon Castle, along with up to nine future first-round picks to dangle.

It’s also worth noting Fox’s wife, Recee, grew up in San Antonio.

With the Spurs outside the Play-In Tournament and franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama too good for any potential tanking towards the end of the season, it could be time for San Antonio to pair him with another star sooner than expected.

Another Texas team, the Houston Rockets, has also been linked to Fox.

If Houston exercises its $44.89 million team option on starting point guard Fred VanVleet for the 2025-26 season, he will be eligible for unrestricted free agency by the summer of 2026, when Fox also would hit the market.

The Rockets also have expiring contracts in Steve Adams ($12.6 million), Jeff Green ($8 million), Jae’Sean Tate ($7.57 million), and Jock Landale has a non-guaranteed $8 million salary for the 2025-26 season.

Former No. 3 overall pick Reed Sheppard was also highly coveted before the draft by various teams. Tari Eason and Cam Whitmore are other young, talented players who could thrive with bigger roles elsewhere. The Rockets also have several first-round picks they can dangle, including an unprotected 2027 first-round pick from Phoenix, which is after Kevin Durant is set to hit free agency.

To this point, however, the Rockets signaled a patient approach with its young core that currently holds the second-best record in the West.

The Miami Heat have also been linked to Fox since they have max cap space for the summer of 2026, and center Bam Adebayo was Fox’s roommate at Kentucky as the two have remained close since.

However, Miami doesn’t have much draft capital to dangle in trades. For now, Miami is focused on trading Jimmy Butler.

Lastly, the Brooklyn Nets have prominently been linked to Fox.

Brooklyn has the future max cap space and has up to 12 tradeable future first-round picks they can dangle to pivot in several directions looking ahead. Fox also played for Nets coach Jordi Fernandez, an associate head coach alongside Mike Brown during their time together in Sacramento.

While the Nets have significant trade assets and a clear connection to Fox on paper, acquiring him at the start of a rebuild in the middle of the season with no other stars around him and then having to pay him a max contract in the summer of 2026 doesn’t align with Brooklyn’s rebuilding plan coming into the season.

The latest NBA trade rumors are swirling around Sacramento Kings star point guard De’Aaron Fox, with several teams reportedly interested in acquiring the talented young player. Among those teams are the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, and Atlanta Hawks.

The Spurs, who are in need of a dynamic playmaker to lead their offense, have reportedly expressed interest in trading for Fox. With DeMar DeRozan’s future in San Antonio uncertain, Fox could be a perfect fit to take over as the team’s primary ball handler.

The Heat, who made a run to the NBA Finals last season, are also said to be eyeing Fox as a potential trade target. Miami has a strong core of players but could use a player like Fox to give them an extra boost in the backcourt.

The Nets, who already have a star-studded roster with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, are rumored to be interested in adding Fox to their lineup. Pairing Fox with Durant and Irving would give Brooklyn a formidable trio that could make them serious contenders for an NBA championship.

The 76ers, who have been looking to upgrade their guard play, are another team that has been linked to Fox in trade talks. With Ben Simmons’s future in Philadelphia uncertain, Fox could be a great fit to pair with Joel Embiid and help the team take the next step towards a championship.

The Hawks, who are a young and up-and-coming team in the Eastern Conference, are also reportedly interested in acquiring Fox. Atlanta already has a talented young core with Trae Young and John Collins, and adding Fox to the mix could make them a force to be reckoned with in the East.

It remains to be seen if any of these teams will be able to pull off a trade for De’Aaron Fox, but it’s clear that there is significant interest in acquiring the talented point guard. Stay tuned for more updates as the NBA trade deadline approaches.

  • Player Grades: Cavs at Heat – Donovan Mitchell leads the way

The Cleveland Cavaliers couldn’t have responded much better to their three-game skid. While their competition wasn’t elite, dominant wins over the Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat are exactly what the doctor ordered for Cleveland.

Grades are based on our usual expectations for each player.

    Donovan Mitchell

    34 points (14-23 shooting), 6 assists, 1 rebound, 2 steals

With no Darius Garland tonight — the Cavs needed a throwback performance from Mitchell. He hasn’t been required to control every aspect of the offense since last season. But tonight, Mitchell reminded us why he is such a special talent.

Mitchell was firmly ahead of Miami’s defense all night. He carved them to perfection, pouring on five three-pointers even when the rest of his teammates combined for just seven of their own.

Overall, it’s good the Cavaliers aren’t relying on Mitchell’s one-man army approach this season. Still, it’s fun to watch when it happens.

    Grade: A+

    Evan Mobley

    22 points (10-15 shooting), 15 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block

Mobley knew the Cavaliers would need some scoring from him tonight. In years past, this would have been a tall order. This season? It’s enough said. Mobley was aggressive from the jump and had no issue carrying his share of the offensive load.

The strength and confidence Mobley has gained can’t be overlooked. He worked around Bam Adebayo numerous times to score in the paint. This is something he just wasn’t capable of in previous seasons.

The NBA All-Star reserves are set to be announced tomorrow. With how dominant Mobley has been on both ends of the floor this season, it’s hard to imagine he’s left out.

    Grade: A+

    Jarrett Allen

    12 points (5-7 shooting), 10 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals

Allen didn’t set anything ablaze in his 29 minutes but he did all of the things you expect him to do in a Cavs victory. He put a deadbolt on the paint, ran the floor for easy opportunities — and cleaned the offensive glass for a handful of putbacks in the second half. Allen remains the sturdy two-way presence this team benefits from in most of their wins.

    Grade: A-

    Max Strus

    8 points (3-11 shooting), 6 assists, 3 rebounds, 3 steals

Eventually, the Cavs will need Strus to actually hit his shots. But right now? They are riding the wave of this phenomenal two-way play he’s had this week.

Strus was instrumental in defending Cade Cunningham on Tuesday and tonight he accepted the challenge against another potential All-Star guard in Tyler Herro. His perimeter defense has kept the Cavaliers competitive without Dean Wade, Caris LeVert or Isaac Okoro.

    Grade: B

    Georges Niang

    15 points (6-9 shooting), 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal

Niang shot 1-9 in his previous game, receiving an F grade. This time, he played significantly better on both ends of the floor. His timely three-pointers contributed to the Cavaliers onslaught that helped them pull away during the fourth quarter. And, he even picked up a few hard-fought rebounds.

    Grade: A-

    Ty Jerome

    20 points (9-18 shooting), 7 assists, 3 rebounds, 1 steal

Jerome has surprised everyone this season. Even after he seemingly crashed down to Earth in December, he has once again sparked the magic that made him one of the most lethal bench players in the NBA this season.

The Cavs bought low on Jerome and have reaped massive rewards. His 20 points and 7 assists off the bench allowed them to coast in a game they were missing Garland. This is the best possible outcome you could have imagined when adding Jerome to the team in 2023.

    Grade: A+

    Jaylon Tyson

    4 points (2-7 shooting), 5 rebounds, 4 assists

The rook got the start tonight. And while he hasn’t found his scoring touch yet — he’s made an impact in every other facet of the game.

Tyson works hard on defense. He’s a physical presence who matches up with multiple positions. The fact that he’s bought into exerting himself defensively while hardly touching the ball on offense is a great sign for his long-term development.

We’d like to see him space the floor a bit better (0-3 from deep). But Tyson is able to break even by being a smart off-ball cutter and a constant threat to grab rebounds. He clawed in three offensive rebounds in 30 minutes tonight.

    Grade: B

    Craig Porter

    9 points (4-7 shooting), 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block

Porter still faces the same challenges he discovered in the back half of his rookie season. In short, it’s tough being a point guard who can’t shoot from the perimeter in today’s NBA.

Still, Porter was a positive against Miami because of his ability to break free in transition. His best moments came on the break while his presence on the glass makes up for the occasional defensive lapse. At least, it did tonight.

    Grade: B-

Player Grades: Cavs at Heat – Donovan Mitchell leads the way

The Cleveland Cavaliers faced off against the Miami Heat in a thrilling matchup that saw Donovan Mitchell shine brightest on the court. The young guard put on a show, leading his team to a hard-fought victory over the Heat.

Here are the player grades from this exciting game:

    Donovan Mitchell: A+
Mitchell was simply sensational in this game, scoring 35 points and dishing out 7 assists. He was a scoring machine, hitting clutch shots when his team needed him the most. Mitchell’s performance was the driving force behind the Cavaliers’ victory.

    Bam Adebayo: B
Adebayo had a solid game for the Heat, recording a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. He was a force in the paint and provided some much-needed scoring for Miami. However, he struggled defensively against Mitchell, which ultimately hurt his team’s chances of winning.

    Collin Sexton: B-
Sexton had a decent game for the Cavaliers, scoring 20 points and adding 4 assists. He was aggressive on the offensive end but struggled with his shot at times. Sexton’s play was solid overall, but he will need to be more consistent moving forward.

    Jimmy Butler: C+
Butler had a quiet game for the Heat, scoring 16 points and grabbing 5 rebounds. He was not as aggressive as usual and struggled to find his rhythm offensively. Butler will need to step up his game if the Heat want to compete at a high level.

Overall, it was an exciting game between the Cavaliers and the Heat, with Donovan Mitchell stealing the show with his stellar performance. The Cavaliers will look to build off this win, while the Heat will need to regroup and come back stronger in their next game.

  • Heat Guard Terry Rozier Flagged in Illegal Sports Betting Scheme

Federal prosecutors have reportedly flagged Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier while investigating an illegal sports betting scheme.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday a gambling ring bet heavily against Rozier in a 2023 game for the Hornets.

Associated Press reporter Tim Reynolds subsequently tweeted Rozier has not been accused of wrongdoing. Neither Rozier nor the Heat had commented as of publication.

The game in question was a 115-96 Hornets loss to the New Orleans Pelicans on March 23, 2023. Rozier totaled five points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal in 10 minutes.

An AP summary that night said Rozier left with a sore right foot.

Charlotte traded Rozier to the Heat in January 2024. He averages 11.9 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 41 games (21) starts.

The WSJ report said the inquiry is “part of a wider government investigation” that already caught former Raptors big man Jontay Porter. The NBA banned Porter for life in 2024 after he allegedly placed 13 bets on NBA games using another person’s account and leaked information about his health to a sports bettor.

Porter pled guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

  • Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo a work in progress for Miami Heat

MIAMI — And now the reality check.

Because the next big thing for the Miami Heat remains a work in progress, as evidenced by the pounding Erik Spoelstra’s team received in Wednesday night’s 126-106 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Kaseya Center.

The thought when Spoelstra finally relented and moved 7-foot rookie Kel’el Ware into the starting lineup alongside 6-9 Bam Adebayo five games ago was the Heat no longer would be a team getting sand kicked in their faces by bigger opponents, no longer to be dominated on second-chance points and points in the paint.

And then arrived quality opposition in the form of the Eastern Conference leaders, and, so . . .  sand was kicked in their faces by bigger opponents, and the Heat were dominated on second-chance points and points in the paint.

“We’re a bigger front line and this needs to be corrected,” Spoelstra said. “There are no excuses now. We have to be a lot more physical and purposeful on the glass.”

The numbers were evidence of the ire, with the Heat outscored 68-38 by the Cavaliers in the paint, 20-10 on second-chance points, with an overall 47-35 rebounding deficit.

It was a reminder that for all of Ware’s length, it also is 20-year-old length, leaving last June’s No. 15 pick out of Indiana very much a work in progress.

“I mean, we’re still working through things, trying to figure out how we can obviously get better through these ups and downs and be more consistent,” said Adebayo, who closed Wednesday with 21 points and nine rebounds, to only five points and nine rebounds from Ware. “Obviously the second-chance points is a big problem that we’ve got to hone in on, but it’s not just ’cause we got two bigs out there you think you’re going to fix a problem.

“You’re trying to add pressure to a rookie that just really started getting his minutes and started to get his feet wet. So I don’t really look at it in that sense. But we do, collectively, as a group, have to get better in rebounding.”

In addition to the issues on the glass, the matchup against the Cavaliers’ defense exposed the work-in-progress element of the Heat’s dual-big approach, with a lack of proper spacing suffocating the offense.

“That’s what we’re talking about a lot,” said guard Terry Rozier, who along with Tyler Herro led the Heat with 22 points Wednesday night. “We’re watching a lot of film, seeing how we can feed off one another.”

The goal, Rozier said, is something closer to what the Cavaliers feature with dual big men in their lineup, with Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley both closing with double-doubles on Wednesday night.

“Obviously you see their two bigs. I think that’s what we’re trying to get to with our offense, where they’re playing well off one another,” Rozier said. “It’ll happen, it’ll happen. We’ve got two bigs that space the floor. Sometimes it can be a problem. Sometimes it can be helpful. We’ve just got to find that.”

For all the hype, the Heat stand 2-3 with Ware as a starter.

“It’s a work in progress,” Adebayo said. “It’s been a small sample size, so you’ve got to work through it. Everybody’s going to point that out, because it’s like, ‘Oh, that’s the glaring,’ because that’s supposed to be the fix. There’s going to be ups and downs to this.”

With Wednesday decidedly down, as the Heat dropped back to .500, at 23-23, with a four-game trip up next, starting Saturday against the San Antonio Spurs.

It was against the Spurs two weeks ago that sparked the decision by Spoelstra to move forward with Ware as starter.

Before that game, the acceptance was of Ware as a work in progress. Now the ante has been raised with Ware as a starter.

Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo: A Work in Progress for Miami Heat

As the Miami Heat continue to strive for success in the NBA, one player who has shown immense potential is Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo. Adebayo, the 6’9″ power forward/center, has quickly become a key player for the Heat, providing strong defense, rebounding, and scoring in the paint.

However, Adebayo is still a work in progress. At just 24 years old, he has plenty of room for growth and development. His offensive skills are improving, but he still has room to expand his scoring repertoire and become a more consistent threat on that end of the floor.

Defensively, Adebayo has already established himself as one of the top big men in the league. His ability to guard multiple positions, protect the rim, and switch onto guards has been crucial for the Heat’s success. However, there is always room for improvement, and Adebayo can continue to refine his defensive skills and become an even more dominant force on that end of the floor.

Off the court, Adebayo’s work ethic and dedication to improving his game are evident. He is constantly working on his craft, whether it be in the weight room, on the court, or studying film. His willingness to put in the work and strive for greatness is what sets him apart from other players.

As Adebayo continues to develop and grow, he has the potential to become a perennial All-Star and a key piece for the Miami Heat for years to come. With his combination of size, skill, and work ethic, the sky is the limit for Kel’el Ware-Bam Adebayo.

  • Jimmy Butler’s absence from Heat is team’s new normal: ‘That’s what it is right now’

MIAMI — When you ask anyone around the Miami Heat (23-22), they’re accustomed to each layer of Jimmy Butler’s drama with the front office, including the most obvious part of him being suspended several times in the last month: his absence. For myriad reasons, Butler has missed 19 games this season, but his trade drama with Miami has been the reason that count has reached double digits for January alone.

After Butler was suspended for seven games on Jan. 3, team captain Bam Adebayo understood the world’s interest in knowing more. Still, he wanted to leave the issue to between Butler and management. On Monday, after Butler participated in shootaround prior to walking out and being suspended a third time, Tyler Herro said lineup adjustments “kind of feels normal now, at this point” and that “nothing changes for me” whether Butler plays or misses another window of time.

Ultimately, Butler’s teammates do have to play basketball with or without him on the court, so it makes sense for their focus to remain there. To borrow some executive-friendly phrasing, it is fair to describe any individual element of the situation as “fluid.” After all, how often does a player get suspended three times in roughly a month’s time? In that span, Butler has gone from publicly stating he doesn’t care whether he’s traded to reassuring the public he has no beef with his teammates.

Heat suspend Jimmy Butler after he walked out of shootaround

Depending on how you process any recent Heat news, that latter point feels correct, given some of Butler’s relationships with players on Miami’s roster. That is especially true of younger contributors who have grown to see Butler as a mentor no matter his team-related drama or level of candor.

Third-year forward Nikola Jović, for example, often credits Butler for aiding his transition to the NBA by being honest with him during stretches when the 2022 first-round pick (27th overall) has either not played well or at all. Jović has learned the finer points of training from Butler. That includes how to maintain his body as well as managing the rigors of NBA business. He has spoken to Butler away from the court, no matter Butler’s status with the Heat. When Butler was first suspended early in the month, Jović likened Butler’s frankness to that of his parents because of his honesty.

“I’m happy that he’s real with me because, since I came here, not a lot of people are really real with you,” Jović told The Athletic on Monday. “Everybody wanna tap you on the shoulder, tell you that everything is going good, even though maybe things are not.

“So, last year, at one point, I didn’t play at all. I think he was injured, and he just called me up to come to practice with him. During those times, he told me that I’m not good enough, I’m not locked in and I’m not putting in enough effort. I wasn’t really happy to hear that, but it was the truth. That was the honest truth. I was happy that he told me, so we practiced a few times. I got a chance. I think I played really good that game. And from that point, I think I was just getting better and better. Even after that, if I was bulls—ing, he would always tell me. It’s simple stuff. He’s just honest and a good friend.”

Heat Today: Teammates dealing with Jimmy Butler drama: ‘Feels weird to not see him’

Butler has certainly strained a few relationships over his 14-year NBA career, but that can come with the territory of a player who has overachieved with each team he has played on while raising each squad’s ceiling. At each stop, Butler has enjoyed wonderful starts before moving on once matters become strained. Still, he maintains solid relationships with former teammates, whether those teammates have reached MVP-level status (Joel Embiid of the 76ers) or have been role players who trotted onto their own greener pastures (Max Strus of the Cavaliers).

That doesn’t negate Butler ruffling the feathers of other NBAers during his time in the league, with Karl-Anthony Towns understandably topping that list, given the intense practice involving himself, Butler and the Timberwolves shortly before Butler’s Minnesota tenure ended. But even Towns has verbalized that he and Butler have grown to be “in a cool spot” since that time. That probably says more about ice being able to thaw than any presumed warmth between the two. Progress is progress, right?

Butler has some friends and confidantes around the league, and he also has some detractors. That is relevant as he hopes to move on to a new franchise by the NBA’s Feb. 6 trade deadline. Even after abruptly leaving Monday’s Heat practice, not every bridge Butler has built in Miami has been burned, no matter how his time with the team could end.

Rookie guard Pelle Larsson has played spot minutes for the Heat throughout his first season.

“He’s been in Sweden a couple times. He was there this summer. We just had regular-people conversations,” Larsson said of Butler. “That’s what it’s all about, getting to know each other. At the end of the day, we’re all humans. We just got to have grace for each other. Whatever someone is going through, they’re going through, so just have to be a professional.

Heat Today: Despite up-and-down road trip, Tyler Herro remains confident in Heat’s youthful core

“I have a lot of respect for that dude, just what he’s done, his whole journey and what he can do as a player. So, there’s definitely a lot I can learn from him as far as the long career he’s had and the impact he’s had. From what guys [have] been telling me, it’s crazy being involved in the business, so when they try to blow up things as much as possible, you got to stay level-headed and focus on the next 24 hours, what we’re doing with the team. So that’s what I’ve been doing.”

How Butler’s time in Miami ends remains to be seen, but his suspensions or potential departure don’t change the fact the Heat have a schedule to play out. Jović, who has been averaging 13.3 points and shooting 41.1 percent from deep over his last nine games, remains appreciative of Butler’s influence but also focused on what the Heat can accomplish in his absence, especially as the team sits three games behind the Milwaukee Bucks (26-19) for fourth in the East despite an undoubtedly challenging season.

“He’s my good friend and my teammate,” Jović said. “It’s hard to not play with your best player — one of the best players in the world. But that’s what it is right now, and we just got to compete without him. Of course, I talk to him. Of course, he’s frustrated. Things are not working as he would want them right now. If he’s, at the moment, not here right now, we’ve just got to play without him. Even though we’re young, we’ve got some talent. I feel like maybe we can show the world we’re good enough without him.”

In a recent press conference, Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra addressed Jimmy Butler’s continued absence from the team and acknowledged that it has become the new normal for the squad.

“That’s what it is right now,” Spoelstra said. “We have to adapt and adjust without Jimmy in the lineup. It’s certainly not ideal, but we have to make the best of the situation.”

Butler has been dealing with various injuries and personal reasons that have kept him out of the lineup for several games this season. Despite his absence, the Heat have managed to maintain a competitive edge and stay in the playoff picture.

Spoelstra emphasized the importance of remaining focused and resilient in the face of adversity. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to step up and fill the void left by Butler’s absence.

“We have a deep roster with talented players who are capable of stepping up when called upon,” Spoelstra said. “We have to continue to trust each other and play our game, regardless of who is on the court.”

As the Heat navigate through this challenging period without their star player, they will look to rely on their depth and collective effort to stay competitive in the Eastern Conference. Butler’s absence may be the new normal for now, but the team remains determined to rise to the occasion and continue their pursuit of success.
