  • Heat Notes: Ware, Larsson, Rozier, Butler, Rivers

Heat first-year center Kel’el Ware is quietly moving up the rookie rankings and is now seen as a favorite for the Rookie of the Year award. He started the second half of a blowout win against the Spurs on Jan. 19, scoring 25 points, and has since been promoted to the starting lineup alongside Bam Adebayo, allowing the latter to slide down to the four spot.

It was working,” coach Erik Spoelstra said of starting the pair together, per ESPN’s Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst (Insider link). “There’s a lot of complex decisions that we’re trying to make. If there’s something that’s obvious, and it’s working in a big way, let’s do it.

In his three games getting extended looks next to Adebayo, Ware is averaging 22.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per night while shooting 52.9% from the field and launching 6.0 three-point attempts per game. Really, his improvement’s been on display since the start of the month. In 13 games in January, he’s averaging 13.6 PPG and 7.0 RPG. It’s a remarkable turnaround for a player who didn’t often see many minutes in 2024.

There’s not a better organization for him to have gone to than that one,” a Western Conference scout told ESPN.

We have more from the Heat:

    • Another Heat rookie got a chance to stand out as Pelle Larsson was elevated to the starting lineup on Thursday against the Bucks, as observed by the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson (Twitter link). Larsson took over Jimmy Butler‘s starting position with the six-time All-Star suspended by the team, supplanting Jaime Jaquez Jr., who had claimed that spot during Butler’s previous suspension. Larsson quickly got into foul trouble, however, and only played 14 minutes. He’s averaging 4.3 points in 27 games this year.
    • Terry Rozier is a “strong believer” that his and the Heat’s play will turn around during the second half of the season, according to HoopsHype’s Cyro Asseo de Choch. Rozier admitted that it has been a challenge adjusting his style of play this year. “When we look at last year, I probably got 8-10 ball screens a game. Now I probably don’t get more than one to two ball screens,” Rozier said. “And it’s not a knock on anybody. We obviously have players who we’re mainly worried about. And we’re trying to get active and we’re trying to get going. So I’m just trying to find my ways, find my rhythm. And it’s been kind of, it’s been kind of tough this season. But I think right now where I’m at, my headspace and everything, I kind of know what I want to do and how I can help this team go forward.”
    • There’s a myriad of potential outcomes for the Heat’s standoff with Butler, Ira Winderman of South Florida’s Sun Sentinel writes. It would be a win for Butler if he ends up in his preferred destination, Phoenix, while the Heat would come away victorious if they obtained their ideal trade package by moving him. Rolling suspensions, paying him not to play, and a messy summer could all come into play if Butler isn’t moved at the deadline, Winderman writes.
    • Bucks head coach Doc Rivers offered some sympathies to Spoelstra in regard to the Butler dilemma on Thursday before the two teams squared off. “I just hope they find a way through it,” Rivers said, per Winderman (Twitter link). “I feel terrible for Spo. There’s no winning for Spo.” As Winderman relays, Rivers noted that he dealt with a similar situation with Ben Simmons in Philadelphia.

The Miami Heat have been making some moves in the offseason, and here are some heat notes on their newest acquisitions:

    – D.J. Ware: The Heat signed Ware to a two-year deal, bringing in the veteran guard to provide some depth in the backcourt. Ware is known for his scoring ability and could be a valuable asset off the bench for Miami.

    – Jon Larsson: Larsson, a 6’9″ forward from Sweden, was selected by the Heat in the second round of the draft. Larsson is a versatile player who can score inside and out, and his size and skill set could make him a valuable piece for Miami in the future.

    – Terry Rozier: The Heat acquired Rozier in a trade with the Charlotte Hornets, sending Goran Dragic and Precious Achiuwa in exchange. Rozier is a dynamic guard who can score in bunches and play solid defense, and he should provide a boost to Miami’s backcourt.

    – Jimmy Butler: Butler has been a key player for the Heat since joining the team in 2019, and he recently signed a contract extension to stay in Miami for the long term. Butler is a two-way star who can score, defend, and lead his team, and his presence will be crucial for the Heat’s success moving forward.

    – Austin Rivers: The Heat signed Rivers to a one-year deal, adding another experienced guard to their roster. Rivers is known for his scoring ability and toughness on defense, and he should provide some valuable depth for Miami in the backcourt.

Overall, the Heat have made some solid moves this offseason to bolster their roster and improve their chances of contending in the Eastern Conference. With a mix of veterans and young talent, Miami could be a team to watch out for in the upcoming season.

  • Kel’el Ware’s NBA Rookie of the Year odds soar as impact increases for Miami Heat

When Kel’el Ware was drafted 15th by the Miami Heat last June, it wasn’t certain when the Indiana product would break into Miami’s rotation — after all, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra focuses more on the game ahead than he presumes anything about the big picture.

Concentrating on a given possession is how Spoelstra has remained dialed in enough to routinely churn out winning seasons, deep playoff runs and a Hall of Fame resume.

In Ware’s case, though, many onlookers have simply been curious and excited about the 7-footer’s NBA potential, even as he took some time to find his stride in the pro ranks. But Ware’s growing presence in Miami’s lineup has offered promising flashes of the future while raising the team’s ceiling amid an up-and-down season. The rest of the NBA world is now taking notice of Miami’s prized rookie, who was sent down to the G League last month to get more playing time and shorten his learning curve for the pro level.

Ware has become the favorite to win this season’s Rookie of the Year, according to Bovada. If he does take home the honor, the 20-year-old would be the first Heat player to win the award. Kendrick Nunn (second in 2019), Dwyane Wade (third in 2003-04) and Caron Butler (third in 2002-03) have the highest voting finishes in franchise history.

“I know that Kel’el generates a lot of opinions out there — let us do our job,” Spoelstra told reporters on Jan. 19. “Let him do what he’s been doing. The initial thing was to get him comfortable, get him in a role where he could impact the game, and the second unit has been coming along. It’s been one of our bright spots in the last several weeks, and he’s been getting really comfortable in that role. And what he’s done with his play and ability to impact the game is earn more. That’s what you want to see. That’s what you want all players to do: earn more, make us watch you, make us have to play you, make us have to think about not playing you and make us continue to figure out other things and just keep you on the court. That’s what he’s doing right now.”

Nobody around the Heat has been shy about Ware’s upside, but the payoff has been exciting nonetheless.

His shot-blocking has made it frightening for aspiring shooters to so much as toe a line into the paint, let alone try scoring against his 7-foot-4 wingspan. That credible reason to induce hesitation is why teammate Bam Adebayo enjoys playing alongside Ware, as the latter’s presence allows Adebayo to blitz pick-and-rolls and roam the perimeter for defensive stops. While Adebayo has established himself as arguably the most versatile defender in the NBA, this allows him to essentially play free safety on defense. In the last week, according to NBA.com, the Heat are allowing only 91.6 points per possession in the 58 minutes Ware and Adebayo have shared the court, which would easily make for the league’s best defensive rating over an entire season. Opponents are shooting just 38.1 percent against Miami’s new defensive duo in that span.

Although Miami endured a 125-96 road loss to the Milwaukee Bucks last Thursday, there were more promising flashes of Ware and Adebayo playing alongside one another. In that game’s early stages, when the Heat held a 15-3 lead during the first quarter, Ware focused on Damian Lillard as Lillard came off a double-screen before driving to the lane. Ware showed his quick feet and kept up with Lillard, who attempted a layup after Adebayo swatted at the ball during the drive attempt before collecting the rebound.

For much of the season, Ware has spent time in the gym to get his weight up and better position himself against stronger NBA veterans. In the second period of that Milwaukee loss, Bucks center Brook Lopez sealed off Ware for positioning before taking the entry pass and attacking the rim, but Ware used his quickness and length to recover and block Lopez’s layup attempt. Notice Adebayo sealing off Giannis Antetokounmpo away from the ball, which Adebayo hopes becomes commonplace as he and Ware play together more.

“I get back to switching a little bit, guarding my yard — not being in a drop zone all year,” he said. “It’s a good switch-up for us.”

On offense, Ware has already shown promise as a credible floor-spacer because of his shooting touch; he ranks second among Heat players in 3-point shooting percentage since New Year’s Day (41 percent, behind only Jaime Jaquez Jr.’s 44 percent).

But before Ware is placed in any 3-point shooting contests, Miami will embrace his penchant for getting easy shots in the paint. Since Jan. 1, he’s shooting 72.7 percent on shots from within 5 feet of the rim, has finished 17 of 19 alley-oop attempts and flushed 34 total dunks. During Miami’s 106-97 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday, Ware wasn’t efficient on offense (3-of-11 shooting, no free-throw attempts), but he still warranted attention as teammates attacked the paint.

Here, Jaquez drove the lane for a second-quarter drive as Nets center Nic Claxton stepped up to contest what would’ve been an attempted floater … until Jaquez simply lobbed the ball for Ware to slam it home.

In the first half of Miami’s loss to Milwaukee last week, Tyler Herro got caught in the air with onlooking Bucks defenders before tossing the ball in the air for his rookie big to do the rest.

Such an adjustment is something Herro looks forward to building on after expressing optimism about Ware’s promise well before oddsmakers started taking notice.

“I love playing with Kel’el,” Herro said last month. “I just look forward to the growth of our chemistry, our two-man action — and then, the growth of Kel’el himself. He’s been really, really good since we’ve gotten him. From the beginning of training camp, you see the glimpses, the skill set … just the raw versatility that he brings on both ends. He’s so effective defensively, just protecting the rim, making everything difficult. And then, on offense, you see the lob threat. You just throw it up there, and he goes and gets it. I love playing with guys like that.”

Miami Heat rookie Kel’el Ware has been turning heads since the start of the NBA season, and his impact on the team has not gone unnoticed. With each game, Ware’s performance on the court has been nothing short of impressive, showcasing his skills and potential as a future star in the league.

As a result, Ware’s odds of winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award have continued to soar, with many analysts and fans alike recognizing his standout performances. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor, as well as his basketball IQ and maturity on the court, have all played a key role in his success so far.

The Miami Heat organization has high hopes for Ware, and his development has been a bright spot in what has been an up-and-down season for the team. With his continued growth and impact on the court, it’s clear that Ware is a frontrunner for the Rookie of the Year award.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on Kel’el Ware as he continues to make waves in the NBA. With each game, he is proving why he deserves to be in the conversation for the Rookie of the Year award, and his future in the league looks brighter than ever.

  • Magic vs Heat Prediction, Picks & Odds for Tonight’s NBA Game

With some uncertainty surrounding Jimmy Butler’s situation in Miami, our NBA picks are happy to side with the Magic tonight.

Tom Oldfield - Betting Analyst at Covers.com

    Jan 27, 2025 • 11:04 ET

    • 4 min read

The playoff charge begins now for the Orlando Magic after finally re-emerging from their injury nightmare, and tonight, they face a Miami Heat team that’s got a decision to make on Jimmy Butler.

Butler is seemingly available again after his latest suspension, but my Magic vs. Heat predictions load up on a rejuvenated Orlando and its superstar duo.

Read on for my NBA picks for tonight’s clash, with both teams trying to climb above the play-in line.

    Magic vs Heat prediction

    My best bet
    Magic moneyline (-110 at bet365)

    My analysis
It’s been a tough grind for the Orlando Magic since their 15-7 start, but they’ve finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel with Franz Wagner back in the lineup and Paolo Banchero off his minutes limit.

The Magic came alive offensively in the fourth quarter on Saturday, scoring 42 points to sink the Pistons, and Wagner’s return slots everyone back into their best roles. He and Banchero combined for 64 points that night, with Tristan da Silva and Anthony Black sliding back to the bench.

Given all the drama in Miami, I’m taking the Orlando moneyline here and banking on the visitors’ defense — still allowing the second-fewest points per game despite all the injuries — to set the tone and limit the hosts’ 3-point attack.

Jalen Suggs (questionable) would be the obvious choice for the Tyler Herro assignment, but the Magic have plenty of other options to pester perimeter scorers without sacrificing anything on the boards.

This pick also reflects on the Miami Heat’s challenging month. With Butler in and out of the locker room, they’ve lost five of their last seven contests, and they’re 19-25 ATS overall this year. A weekend win over the lottery-bound Nets was nothing to write home about — and at this stage, it’s hard to know whether having Butler on the court is really a plus for Miami.

The Magic have won two of the teams’ three matchups this year, and I expect Jamahl Mosley’s relentless roster to have the last laugh again tonight.

    Magic vs Heat same-game parlay

    Magic moneyline

    First half Under 107.5

    Paolo Banchero Over 22.5 points

With the Magic’s conveyor belt of pesky, long-armed defenders, it’s no surprise they’ve peppered the Under again this season — it’s now 49-31 in their last 80 games. While that feels like a value pick again here, I prefer the first-half Under at 107.5

Orlando has cashed in the first-half Under in 53 of its past 87 contests, and the visitors’ offense ranks dead last in the league this year with just 51.5 first-half points per game. Though the Magic’s two best scorers have been reunited, both of these teams would prefer to drag this into a bruising, low-scoring battle, similar to the 89-88 scoreline of their Boxing Day clash.

I’m also taking the Over on the Paolo Banchero points prop. He played 40 minutes against the Pistons — the most since his return from a torn oblique — and poured in 32 points on 11-for-22 shooting. That’s a good sign for Orlando, and he’s gone past the 20-point mark in six of his eight outings this month.

Banchero was a beast in the season opener against Miami, with an efficient 33-point effort, and I see him getting the better of the Heat frontcourt tonight.

Tonight’s NBA matchup between the Magic and the Heat is sure to be an exciting one. Both teams have been playing well recently, making it difficult to predict the outcome.

The Magic have been on a hot streak, winning five of their last seven games. Led by their star player, Nikola Vucevic, the Magic have been playing solid defense and scoring efficiently. They will look to continue their winning ways against the Heat tonight.

On the other hand, the Heat have also been playing well, with key players like Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo leading the way. The Heat have a strong defense and have been shooting well from beyond the arc. They will be a tough matchup for the Magic tonight.

In terms of odds, the Heat are currently favored to win this game. However, the Magic have been playing with a lot of confidence and could pull off an upset. It will be interesting to see how this game plays out.

Overall, I predict that this will be a close game with both teams giving it their all. In the end, I think the Heat will come out on top with a narrow victory. But, with the way the Magic have been playing, anything is possible. Be sure to tune in tonight to see who comes out on top in this exciting matchup.

The Orlando Magic (24-23) and Miami Heat (22-22) meet Monday. Tip-off from Kaseya Center is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s NBA odds around the Magic vs. Heat odds and make our expert NBA picks and predictions for the best bets.

    Season series: Orlando leads 2-1

Orlando snapped a 5-game losing streak with a 121-113 win over the Detroit Pistons Saturday while covering as a 3.5-point home favorite. F Franz Wagner and F Paolo Banchero each had 32 points for Orlando, which scored over 100 points for the first time since Jan 12.

Miami beat the Brooklyn Nets 106-97 Saturday, covering as a 7-point road favorite. G Tyler Herro led all scorers with 25 points, while C Bam Adebayo added 17 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. F Nikola Jovic also chipped in with 17 points for Miami, which snapped a 2-game skid.

Heat F Jimmy Butler is set to return Monday after serving his second team-issued suspension of January.

Magic at Heat picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Heat 106, Magic 104

    Moneyline

    BET HEAT (-110).

Miami is the hotter team, as Orlando is still just one game removed from a 5-game skid. The Heat are also 11-9 at home this season, while the Magic are just 9-14 on the road.

The Heat won the last head-to-head meeting and are 3-1 in the last 4 vs. the Magic in Miami.

Be aware that if Orlando’s offense is getting back to normal, as is suggested by Saturday’s victory over Detroit, then it will be very hard for the Heat to beat the Magic.

    Against the spread

    PASS.

I like the Heat to cover here as +1.5 (-120) underdogs, but I prefer their odds on the moneyline, as the payout is greater and less than 5 percent of NBA games land on exactly 1 point.

Pass, and bet the moneyline and/or O/U instead.

    Over/Under

    LEAN OVER 208.5 (-105).

The Over has hit in 3 straight Heat home games and is 24-20 for Miami this season. For Orlando, the Over is 2-1 in its last 3 road games. The Over has also hit in 3 of the last 4 meetings and is 3-1 in the last 4 in Miami.

This is a lean because Orlando’s offense has been horrible as of late, averaging just 98.2 points per game in January, and the Under is 28-19 for the Magic this season.

  • Heat Notes: Highsmith, Butler, Adebayo, Jaquez, Herro

Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra made a significant change to his starting lineup Tuesday night, using rookie big man Kel’el Ware alongside Bam Adebayo in a double-big frontcourt. That meant Haywood Highsmith came off the bench after starting 32 of the previous 33 games he had played, and he saw just four minutes of action in a loss to Portland.

“Just control what I can control,” Highsmith told reporters, including Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald. “It’s a long season. I know there are going to be ups and downs. I’m used to it, for sure.”

The 28-year-old forward has been primarily a reserve during his four seasons in Miami, but his role has expanded this season, even though his minutes aren’t always steady. Spoelstra emphasized that the team is still counting on Highsmith to contribute, even when he doesn’t start.

“I actually talked to him about it, that sometimes when things are fluid and they’re moving fast, sometimes things happen and it’s not at all an indictment or an indication of how you’re playing,” Spoelstra said. “He’s an example of that. He’s had really important minutes and his role is important for us. He just has to stay with it. We all believe in him, we all know his importance. And as we figure things out, his minutes will likely be more consistent.”

    There’s more from Miami:

    • In light of Jimmy Butler‘s latest suspension, Shams Charania of ESPN describes the situation with the volatile forward as “untenable” (Twitter video link). He adds that Heat coaches and players view the standoff as “a distraction” and “chaos,” and some cite a lack of clarity in the organization.
    • Among the reasons for Butler’s first suspension was a perceived lack of effort, and Bobby Marks of ESPN offers several statistics to back that up (Twitter link). Among the highlights, Butler attempted fewer than 10 field goals in four of his last five games, and he moved at a “fast speed” – as defined by Second Spectrum – just 5% of the time in Tuesday’s game vs. Portland.
    • Adebayo has helped to keep the team’s younger players focused on business rather than the daily news about Butler, per Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel. “They’re handling it as professionally as they should,” Adebayo said. “I’m really emphasizing to the young guys to really be professional in this league. But, like I said before, we still have to play games.”
    • Jaime Jaquez filled in well as Butler’s replacement in the starting lineup during his first suspension, but he was back in a reserve role once Butler returned, Winderman adds. The second-year forward has already learned how to handle such adjustments. “What I realize is that is part of the NBA,” Jaquez said. “And you’ve just got to be ready for what comes. And I think, myself, I’m starting to grow and realize just be ready for anything, not have any expectations, just go out here and be ready to hoop.”
    • The Heat struggled to create good scoring opportunities on Tuesday as Tyler Herro missed his first game of the season, Winderman observes in a separate story. Herro is dealing with groin soreness, but he’s listed as probable for Thursday’s game at Milwaukee.

The Miami Heat have been making waves this season, and here are some notes on some of their key players:

    1. Highsmith: The rookie forward has been impressing with his energy and hustle on both ends of the court. He’s shown a willingness to do the dirty work and has been a key contributor off the bench.

    2. Butler: Jimmy Butler continues to be the heart and soul of the Heat, leading the team in scoring and providing veteran leadership. His tenacity and defensive prowess have been crucial to the team’s success.

    3. Adebayo: Bam Adebayo has taken his game to the next level this season, becoming an All-Star and one of the best big men in the league. His versatility on offense and defense has been a huge asset for the Heat.

    4. Jaquez: Johnny Jaquez has been a pleasant surprise for the Heat, stepping up in the absence of some key players. His scoring and rebounding have been crucial in keeping the team afloat.

    5. Herro: Tyler Herro has had his ups and downs this season, but when he’s on, he’s a game-changer. His scoring ability and clutch gene make him a valuable asset for the Heat.

With these players stepping up and contributing in different ways, the Heat look poised for a deep playoff run. Keep an eye on them as they continue to make noise in the Eastern Conference.

  • Jimmy Butler suspension: Heat sideline star indefinitely without pay after he walks out of shootaround

The Miami Heat are suspending star forward Jimmy Butler indefinitely, CBS Sports NBA insider Bill Reiter confirmed Monday. The decision came after Butler walked out of a shootaround ahead of Monday’s game against the Orlando Magic. Butler — who has been publicly trying to force a trade out of Miami for weeks — left practice after he was informed that Haywood Highsmith would be replacing him in the starting lineup moving forward, according to ESPN

The Heat said they are suspending Butler for a minimum of five games, which will take the team through the Feb. 6 trade deadline. They added that Butler’s latest suspension comes without pay, and the Heat say the veteran star was “intentionally withholding services.”

The Miami Heat are suspending Jimmy Butler without pay effective immediately for an indefinite period to last no fewer than five games,” the team wrote in a statement. “The suspension is due to a continued pattern of disregard of team rules, engaging in conduct detrimental to the team and intentionally withholding services. This includes walking out of practice earlier today.”

This is the third suspension the Heat have issued Butler this month. The first, a seven-game suspension that came earlier in January, was for conduct detrimental to the team following his initial trade request. The second, which came last week, was two games for missing a team flight. Butler was initially expected to return to the fold on Monday against the Magic.

Notably, this is not the first time Butler has been involved in a practice incident while trying to get traded. When he was a member of the Minnesota Timberwolves during training camp in 2018, he infamously played a practice scrimmage with reserves against the starting lineup in order to prove a point. Afterward, he held a televised interview with Rachel Nichols. He was eventually traded to the Philadelphia 76ers during the season.

Butler is still on the trade block but his path to his preferred destination, the Phoenix Suns, is precarious. Not only would the Suns need to find a taker for Bradley Beal’s supermax contract, but they’d need Beal to agree to a trade given his no-trade clause. Phoenix has been by far the most aggressive Butler suitor this season, but if a Suns deal can’t be reached, both Butler and the Heat will need to look elsewhere.

Butler has a player option for next season worth $52.4 million. And given how little cap space exists on the open market this summer, he seems likely to exercise the option and stay out of unrestricted free agency. That means that if a trade can’t be reached ahead of the trade deadline, Butler may well be forced to return to the Heat in the summer.

Given his latest suspension, his place on the team is seemingly growing increasingly untenable. Perhaps that makes a trade more likely in the next 10 days, but for now, Butler won’t be playing for anyone.

The Miami Heat have announced that star player Jimmy Butler has been suspended indefinitely without pay after he walked out of a team shootaround. The incident occurred earlier today, leaving the team without one of their key players for an undetermined amount of time.

Butler, known for his fiery personality and competitive nature, has had run-ins with coaches and teammates in the past. This latest incident has raised concerns about his commitment to the team and his willingness to adhere to team rules and protocols.

The Heat organization has not released any further details about the suspension or what led to Butler’s actions. Fans and analysts alike are left speculating about the future of the All-Star player and how this will impact the team’s performance moving forward.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
