Ukraine says N Korea troops may have quit front line after heavy losses
Ukrainian special forces fighting in Russia’s western Kursk region have told the BBC they have not seen any North Korean troops there for the past three weeks.
A spokesman said it was likely they had pulled out after suffering heavy losses.
Last week, Western officials told the BBC that, out of some 11,000 troops sent from North Korea to fight for Russia, 1,000 had been killed in just three months.
North Korea and Russia have not commented.
On Friday, the Ukrainian special forces spokesman told the BBC he was only referring to areas in the Kursk region where his forces were fighting.
The spokesman did not say how long that front line was.
And while this is not the full picture, it does suggest significant North Korean casualties.
Separately, the New York Times also reported that the North Koreans had been pulled off the front lines.
The newspaper quoted US officials as saying the withdrawal may not be a permanent one, and the soldiers could return after receiving additional training or after the Russians come up with new ways of deploying them to avoid such heavy casualties.
Reports attributed to South Korean intelligence say the North Koreans are unprepared for the realities of modern warfare, and are especially vulnerable to being targeted by Ukrainian drones.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korea’s leader Kim Jong Un have in recent months deepened bilateral ties, signing a security and defence treaty.
Pyongyang’s assistance to Moscow now also extends to large amounts of ammunition and weapons.
Last August, elite Ukrainian troops launched a lightning offensive in Kursk, seizing more than 1,000 sq km (386 sq miles) of Russian territory.
Since then, Russian forces have managed to retake a sizeable chunk of that region.
Kyiv’s surprise incursion was aimed at changing the dynamics of the war.
It was initially hoped the operation would relieve pressure on other parts of the more than 1,000km-long (620 miles) frontline, particularly in eastern Ukraine.
Moscow is continuing its relentless – albeit slow – advance in the east, seizing a number of settlements in the Donetsk region in recent weeks.
Now Kyiv is looking to hold on to the land it occupies in Kursk as leverage for any possible ceasefire or peace negotiations with Moscow.
Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
Ukraine’s defense ministry has reported that North Korean troops may have withdrawn from the front line after suffering heavy losses in recent clashes. The ministry stated that the North Korean soldiers had faced fierce resistance from Ukrainian forces, resulting in significant casualties on their side. While there has been no official confirmation of the North Korean troop withdrawal, Ukraine’s defense ministry expressed optimism that the recent setbacks may have forced them to reconsider their strategy. The ministry emphasized that Ukrainian forces remain vigilant and prepared to defend their territory against any further incursions.
The news of a possible North Korean retreat comes as a welcome development for Ukraine, which has been locked in a tense standoff with the reclusive regime for months. However, the situation remains fluid, and Ukrainian officials are urging caution until more concrete information is available.
As tensions continue to simmer in the region, the international community is closely monitoring the situation and calling for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. The withdrawal of North Korean troops, if confirmed, could be a significant step towards de-escalating the crisis and preventing further bloodshed.

North Korean troops pulled back from frontline after heavy losses, Ukrainian officials say
Kyiv, Ukraine
CNN
—
North Korean troops have not been seen on the frontlines in Russia’s Kursk region for several weeks, a Ukrainian military official said Friday, amid reports of mass casualties among Pyongyang’s forces.
“The presence of DPRK troops has not been observed for about three weeks, and they were probably forced to withdraw after suffering heavy losses,” a spokesperson for the Ukrainian military’s Special Operations Forces, Colonel Oleksandr Kindratenko, told CNN.
It follows reports that some North Korean units have been pulled back from the frontlines after significant losses, according to Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak.
About 12,000 North Korean soldiers have been sent to Russia, according to Ukrainian officials and Western intelligence reports, which say around 4,000 those troops have been killed or injured.
North Korean troops have been deployed to Kursk since at least November to repel Ukraine’s incursion in the southern Russian border region.
“We are still in the Kursk region… the Russian forces were not enough to push us out,” Ukrainian President Zelensky said last week at a speech in Davos, Switzerland. Zelensky noted that there were 60,000 Russian troops in Kursk and 12,000 North Koreans.
Zelensky also said that one-third of those North Korean troops had been killed.
CNN has previously reported on the brutal and near-suicidal tactics of North Korean soldiers, who in some cases have detonated grenades rather than be captured by Ukrainian forces and have written pledges of allegiance on the battlefield to North Korea’s Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un.
A commander with the 6th Special Operations Forces regiment, who did not want to give his name for security reasons, told CNN that while the North Korean soldiers are “all young, trained, hardy fighters,” they would have not previously faced drones in combat. “They are prepared for the realities of war in 1980 at best,” he said.
Another battalion serviceman told CNN the North Koreans had shown good marksmanship when shooting down drones from about a 100-meter distance, suggesting a high level of training in North Korea.
However, Russia appears to be using the troops as foot soldiers, using them to carry out mass ground assaults despite major losses in Kursk.
Ukraine has recently made advancements in Kursk, according to a battlefield update from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a DC-based think-tank, on January 26. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said earlier this week that Russian forces recaptured the Kursk region village of Nikolayevo-Daryino, which lies on the Russia-Ukraine border.
Neither Moscow nor Pyongyang have officially acknowledged the presence of North Korean troops in Russia.
Last year, months before the deployment of North Koreans to Russia, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russia’s President Vladimir Putin signed a landmark defense pact and pledged to use all available means to provide immediate military assistance in the event the other is attacked.
The pact is the most significant agreement signed by Russia and North Korea in decades and has been viewed as something of a revival of their 1961 Cold War-era mutual defense pledge.
CNN’s Nick Paton Walsh, Rebecca Wright, Daria Tarasova-Markina, Brice Laine and Helen Regan contributed to this report.
In a recent announcement, Ukrainian officials revealed that North Korean troops have been forced to pull back from the frontline after sustaining heavy losses in recent clashes. The conflict, which has been ongoing for several weeks, has reportedly resulted in significant casualties on both sides. The withdrawal of North Korean troops from the frontline is seen as a significant development in the conflict, with Ukrainian forces now gaining ground in the region. However, officials caution that the situation remains fluid and that further fighting is likely to occur in the coming days.
The international community has been closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine, with fears of a wider conflict breaking out in the region. Diplomatic efforts are underway to try and de-escalate the situation and prevent further bloodshed.
As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the conflict will play out and what the repercussions will be for both Ukraine and North Korea. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) — Colder weather is forecast to move into the area starting Friday morning.
The National Weather Service in Portland has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Oregon and Southwest Washington Cascades.
They have also issued a Winter Storm Watch for the north Oregon Coast Range and the Willapa Hills in Washington.
“This system’s arrival soon will change the entire weather pattern we’ve been experiencing recently—from historically dry and cold to what we normally see in February,” said Storm Tracker 2 Meteorologist Rhonda Shelby.
The snow level will begin at around 4,000 feet Friday morning before dropping to around 3,000 feet by Friday night.
“Heavy snow possible above 3,000 feet. Total snow accumulations between 6 and 12 inches, and up to 15 inches above 5,000 feet,” NWS Portland said in their warning message.
In the Coast Range and Willapa Hills, forecasters are calling for 2 to 4 inches through Saturday afternoon.
People traveling to the coast should expect to encounter winter driving conditions. The snow level will start around 3,000 feet before lowering towards 500 feet by late Saturday morning.
With the snow level falling that low, people are wondering about the possibility of seeing snow in the Willamette Valley and around the Portland area.
“This is not looking like an arctic outbreak or deep freeze. It’s looking more like a minor snow threat for most areas below 1000 feet early next week,” Shelby said.
Weather models continue to offer different solutions every run and Shelby adds that any slight change in cold air or an addition or subtraction of available precipitation could change the forecast.
“I expect the snow level to fluctuate from 500 to 1000 feet at times early next week. This is referring to the “sticking” level of snow. However, anyone at sea level could expect dustings of snow in heavier showers that occur early in the morning or late at night when air temperatures are coldest,” Shelby stated.
Storm Tracker 2 Meteorologist Dave Salesky will have the latest forecast on KATU News tonight at 4, 5, 6, and 11 p.m.
As winter weather continues to make its presence known in the Pacific Northwest, residents in Portland may want to keep an eye on the forecast for next week. While heavy snow is expected in the Cascades, there is also a minor snow threat for the Portland area. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Cascades, with up to a foot of snow expected in some areas. This could create hazardous driving conditions on mountain passes and higher elevation roads.
In Portland, there is a chance of snow next week, although accumulations are expected to be light. However, even a small amount of snow can cause disruptions in the city, so residents should be prepared for possible impacts on travel and daily activities.
As always, it’s important to stay informed and prepared for changing weather conditions. Keep an eye on the forecast and make sure you have necessary supplies on hand in case of snow or ice. Stay safe out there, Portland!

Weather Impact Alert days: Heavy rain, snow chance in Portland
Steady rain will fall Thursday night and into Friday. There’s a chance of snow in Portland Saturday through Wednesday.
PORTLAND, Ore. — KGW has issued Weather Impact Alert days for Friday through Wednesday due to expected heavy rain and the chance for snow in the Portland metro area.
Following a 17-day dry stretch, rain is finally expected to return Thursday evening. There may be hours of steady rain that’s heavy at times Thursday night and Friday, KGW meteorologist Rod Hill said. Rain will break into showers Friday overnight, and showers will continue into the weekend. Rain totals will exceed half an inch around Portland.
Snow levels will be above 4,000 feet through noon on Friday before rapidly dropping at night behind a cold front. Over the weekend, snow levels are expected to drop between 300-500 feet, which would likely bring sticking snow to valley hills and other areas at that elevation.
One to four inches of snow is possible in scattered locations; however, the amount of precipitation that could fall remains in question, Hill said. Lower elevations, including downtown Portland, will see mainly rain showers with temperatures above 32 degrees.
All elevations could see freezing temperatures starting Sunday night, and a mix of snow and rain showers is forecasted for Portland. It’s possible that snow could stick on the ground during the overnight and morning hours, Hill said. Temperatures will rise near 40 degrees and could bring a mix of rain and snow.
“It does appear all moisture will be in the form of snow showers Tuesday-Thursday of next week,” Hill said. “Due to the nature of scattered precipitation at lowest elevations, it is unsure at this time as to if Portland and Salem will see snow accumulation, but the possibility is in the forecast.”
Meanwhile, the Cascades and the coast range are also impacted with a snow threat. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Mount Hood and the Cascades from Thursday night through Saturday afternoon. Up to 20 inches of snow will fall at Mount Hood resorts, Hill said, with up to eight inches at the pass level.
When
Steady rain is expected in the Portland metro area starting late Thursday evening and lasting much of Friday. There’s the chance for snow on Saturday and Sunday. Monday may see a snow-and-rain mix at lower elevations, with snow showers possible on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Impact
One to four inches of snow is possible for valley hills at 300 feet elevation and higher. Areas with lower elevation, like downtown Portland, may see rain showers.
Need
If snow sticks and accumulates, roads may be slick and drivers should use extra caution.
What are Weather Impact Alert days?
It’s our goal to make sure you have the most accurate and up-to-date information about the weather and its impact on you. The new KGW Weather Impact Alerts will be just that, alerts as far in advance as possible, so that you can be armed with accurate information to keep yourself and your family safe.
Attention Portland residents! Be prepared for some potentially wild weather in the upcoming days. Make sure to have emergency supplies on hand, such as extra food, water, and blankets. Stay updated on weather forecasts and road conditions, and avoid traveling if possible.
