Even if almost every Jim Carrey movie was an instant classic, they’re not known for having the best Rotten Tomatoes scores. Surprisingly, beloved films like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Bruce Almighty, and Fun With Dick and Jane actually have pretty low reviews. Considering Carrey’s filmography features a lot of irreverent and child-like humor, it makes sense that critics struggle to take it seriously despite its proven ability to enthrall audiences worldwide and produce box office successes.

On the other hand, the actor’s acclaimed performances in projects like Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind and Man on the Moon didn’t necessarily earn a lot on their theatrical release. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, however, achieved something only a few of Carrey’s movies have done, and it did so in record time. The popular movies have done great at the box office and with critics — with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 earning the highest Rotten Tomatoes score, and giving its actor five straight years without a Rotten movie, something Carrey had never achieved before.

Jim Carrey’s late-career success with Sonic the Hedgehog could have to do with the fact that the actor had never been a part of a genre franchise before. Notably, the actor had previously shown himself adamant about doing sequels and had even announced his retirement in 2022, after the second installment, telling Access Hollywood that he would only return “If the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see” (via Variety).
