‘Invincible’ Creator Robert Kirkman Unmasks the Heightened Stakes of Season 3
This article was written for the
March ’25 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 348).
Prime Video’s superhero saga, Invincible, is soaring into its third eight-episode season this month with the compelling story of teenager Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and his violent escapades as a caped crimefighter saddled with the dark legacy of Omni-Man, his extraterrestrial father (J.K. Simmons).
Created by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman and crafted from the acclaimed 2003-2018 Image comic-book series by Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, Skybound Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios’ Invincible series has attracted a fierce following over its last two seasons of adult-aimed animated brutality on Prime Video, and received Emmy, Annie Award, Saturn and Critics Choice nominations along the way.
This fresh season promises more emotional confrontations with a guilt-stricken Omni-Man and Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen) teaming up to bust out of a Viltrumite prison, Mark amping up his training regime with Cecil (Walton Goggins) to don the notorious blue-and-black costume, the Guardians of the Globe dealing with conflicts internal and external, and Mark’s superpowered half-brother Oliver growing at an accelerated rate as Mark strives to shelter his loved ones.
Bigger, Wilder, Crazier: The third season of ‘Invincible’ introduces Mark’s transformative blue suit era in the storyline and features bigger, wilder and more intense narratives that echo what was set up in the first season of the show. Amping Up the Action
“I think the center of the show is really Mark Grayson’s evolution and Invincible growing as a superhero and learning things as a superhero and making mistakes,” Kirkman tells Animation Magazine. “So we saw a lot of that in Season 2. He’s definitely maturing. He’s doing a lot of training, he’s doing a lot of preparing. He knows from Anissa’s visit that there’s more conflict brewing and bigger threats looming on the horizon that he needs to prepare for. That propulsion is something that’s really important to us. We’re always moving forward and throwing as many problems as possible at Mark and the other characters. Season 3 is where we’re really stepping on the gas. It kicks off and hits the ground running. If you thought Season 2 was fast paced, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

Executive producer and showrunner Simon Racioppa believes that part of Invincible’s promise and appeal derive from the fact that the writers never forget what has happened before.
“There’s going to be repercussions of things that happened in Season 1 that are going to affect our characters in Season 3,” Racioppa adds. “Nothing ever resets. A lot of our characters are carrying emotional trauma from things that happened back in Season 1. It’s really important to be true to that all the way through the run of the show. It’s never like, ‘Oh, it’s time for another adventure on Invincible.’ You could probably just start with episode one and watch the whole series all the way through and it almost doesn’t feel like there’s any gap between the seasons. Season 3 will pick up right off the end of Season 2. And we hope that helps ground the series. Terrible things happened in Season 2 and that’s going to have an effect on Season 3.”
Omni Family Reunion: ‘Sweet Tooth’ star Christian Convery joins the cast in S3 as Oliver Grayson. New cast members for this season also include Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, John DiMaggio, Tzi Ma, Xolo Maridueña, Simu Liu, Jonathan Banks and Doug Bradley. One of the most popular staples in the pop culture universe is the anxiety-ridden waiting period to see what uncanny powers blossom from the offspring of superheroes as in the case of Franklin Richards of Marvel’s Fantastic Four world, or even baby Jack-Jack in Pixar’s Incredibles films. Such is the case with Mark’s younger sibling Oliver, the purple-skinned product of Omni-Man and his insectoid Thraxan wife, Andressa. Season 3 will see Oliver emerge as Kid Omni-Man!
“We did figure out in the comics a cool narrative way to have Oliver age rapidly,” Kirkman explains. “So that even though the comic kind of plays with time at a deliberate pace and you don’t really have people aging in real time, you can have that character growth from a baby to wherever we get with him, which is kind of fun. Oliver represents a lot of things in the show. It’s Nolan’s influence from afar coming into Earth, affecting Mark in some huge ways, affecting Debbie in huge ways. He’s a baby at the end of Season 2, but as you watch Season 3 you’ll see he’s growing rapidly and becoming a full-fledged character that’s an integral member of our cast and shaking everything up in a lot of really cool ways.”
Kirkman feels that shifting into Season 3 the team has clearly established what this show is. “This is the Mark Grayson show,” he says. “But as we continue to adapt the comic there’s a lot more Omni-Man, which is really cool. It’s great to be working more with J.K. Simmons and having that character more present. Now we’re just getting into the details of the story and the characters and fleshing them out as much as possible and giving them interesting things to do, and getting to some really cool things from the comics that I think people are going to be excited to see.”
Fortified with 16 hours of the show now under its belt, Invincible can confidently stride into this next block of episodes knowing that the audience has a familiarity with its character roster.
“It lets us go deeper into relationships, spend more time with those characters, and makes it more fun to write for too,” says Racioppa. “It’s nice having that sort of history that lets you reference that back into the characters and show what they’ve already been through affects what they’re going to do next, and their emotional state. The whole team came together in the transition. When you hit those moments it’s a beautiful high. You’re trying to achieve something great that has an emotional resonance that hopefully will affect our audience.”
As fans of the comic-book series know, Mark Grayson gets a brand new blue costume at this point in the unfolding story and as seen in the teaser trailers it makes a bold statement.
Changing Colors
“There were a lot of variations done by the design team, Shaun O’Neil and Dou Hong and her team, trying to figure out how to interpret the blue costume from the comics,” Kirkman notes. “The costume change is a superhero trope. Spider-Man gets the black costume and everybody hates the black costume. Then two years later they get rid of the black costume and everybody doesn’t want to go back to the old costume. And that kind of thing actually happened. There were letters from people who didn’t like the blue-and-black costume. When we retired it and went back to the original costume there were lots of people complaining. Now that we’re doing it in the show, the fanbase that read the comics and knows what’s coming, they’re like, ‘Ah, the blue-and-black era! We’re so excited.’ I want to say, ‘You guys weren’t so excited when it started.’
“I wrote the comic for 16 years and I believe there was a week or two gap between writing the last issue and starting the pilot for this series,” Kirkman says. “I just love this world and these characters and feel really fortunate to have the opportunity to do it again. What’s most exciting to me is doing this as a second draft of the comic if you will, and finding those things to improve upon. It’s a fun process, I’m working with a lot of good people, and the fan response has been tremendous. And they haven’t even seen Season 3 yet. Just wait!”

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents were seen at a Chicago school Friday afternoon, hours after a Trump administration official confirmed that Illinois was among several states where hundreds of arrests had previously been made.
According to Chicago Public Schools’ chief education officer, ICE agents were confirmed to have been present at Hamline School in Chicago’s Back of the Yards neighborhood, though the agents did not detain anyone and left the premises shortly after.
“Earlier today, Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents showed up at Hamline Elementary School,” Chief Education Officer Bogdana Chkoumbova said during a press conference at the school. “School staff followed CPS established protocols. They kept ICE agents outside of the school and contacted CPS law department and CPS Office of Safety and Security for further guidance. The ICE agents were not allowed into the school and were not permitted to speak to any students or staff members. Here is the bottom line, our students and staff are safe. Our protocols were followed.”
Rapid Response Team members with the nonprofit group Increase the Peace also responded to the scene.
The school’s principal said the school will not open its doors for ICE unnecessarily.
“I am very grateful to all of our Hamline staff here for upholding all of our protocols and ensuring the safety of our students. We will not open our doors for ICE, and we are here to protect our children and make sure they have access to an excellent education. We stand in solidarity with our families and the Back of the Yards community,” Natasha Ortega said.
The incident comes amid heightened concerns in immigrant communities across Chicago, though there has so far been no confirmation of raids.
Schools across the Chicago area have released guidance about potential situations after the Trump Administration revoked previous guidance prohibiting immigration arrests at schools, churches and hospitals.
Trump came into office promising to undertake deportation operations and other crackdowns on immigration.
Tom Homan, who is expected to be named Trump’s border czar, has promised to “knock down” roadblocks put up by state law enforcement, and said he intends to undertake deportation operations within Chicago and Illinois.
Reports first surfaced over the weekend ahead of Trump’s inauguration, stating ICE officials were planning a major enforcement operation that would target immigrants for several days, according to a document reviewed by NBC News and a person familiar with the planning. The person, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the operation, said multiple locations across Chicago will be targeted.
Though Chicago Public Schools did not immediately confirm the Hamlin School presence, the district did put out a message to families earlier this week saying it planned to “maintain its current policies and procedures to actively protect students, staff, and their families.”
“As CPS continues to receive more information about federal policy changes, CPS will continue to review our own protocols and we will continue to provide the appropriate school-based staff guidance on how best to protect our students, staff, families, and school communities,” the district said in a statement while sharing its policies and guidelines.
Meanwhile, a Trump administration official confirmed to NBC News that ICE arrests took place across the U.S., including in Illinois, Utah, California, Minnesota, New York, Florida and Maryland. Chicago was among the specific cities noted by the official as having confirmed arrests.
According to this official, ICE made 538 arrests — 373 criminal arrests and 165 non-criminal arrests —throughout the U.S. on Thursday.
NBC Chicago has not independently confirmed if any arrests took place in Chicago and, if so, where.
ICE agents ‘showed up’ at Chicago school amid heightened concernsRecently, there have been reports of ICE agents making an unexpected appearance at a Chicago school, causing heightened concerns among immigrant students and their families. The incident has sparked outrage and fear in the community, with many questioning the motives behind the agents’ visit.
According to reports from NBC Chicago, the ICE agents showed up at the school without prior notice or explanation, leading to confusion and panic among students and staff. The presence of federal immigration authorities in a place of learning has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of immigrant students, who may fear being targeted or detained.
In light of this incident, community leaders and advocates are calling for greater transparency and accountability from ICE officials. They are demanding answers as to why the agents were at the school and what their intentions were. Many are also urging school administrators to take steps to protect their students and ensure that they feel safe and supported.
The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by immigrant communities in the current political climate. It highlights the need for greater protections and resources for vulnerable populations, particularly in schools and other educational settings.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this troubling incident, it is important for all stakeholders to come together and work towards creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all students, regardless of their immigration status. Only by standing together and advocating for the rights of all individuals can we ensure a brighter and more equitable future for our community.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers for Squid Game series 2.
Squid Game series 3 will release in 2025 After a gruelling three-year wait for Squid Game series 2, fans won’t have to endure as long for series 3. On Wednesday, Netflix confirmed that the third instalment of the Korean thriller will arrive in 2025.
Series 2’s shocking cliffhanger
Series 2, which premiered in December last year, ended on a cliffhanger that left viewers reeling. In the final episode, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) leads a rebellion, culminating in the shocking death of his closest ally, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), at the hands of the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). Unbeknownst to Gi-hun, the Front Man is actually In-ho, a former Squid Game champion who now oversees the deadly contest, disguising himself as Player 001 under the name Young-il.
Hwang Dong-hyuk’s vision for series 3
“I felt it was the right moment to pause and give [Gi-hun] some resolution,” Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator, had shared with Variety in an interview in December, last year. “But in series 3, he’ll grapple with guilt and failure. How he moves forward is the story we’ll dive into next,” he added. Gi-hun’s journey is expected to reach a critical juncture as he faces the consequences of his rebellion, impacting both himself and the shadowy organisation behind the deadly games.
New challenges and emotional depth
While Netflix has not released an official synopsis, Hwang hinted at new games and intensified character dynamics. “Series 3 will introduce new games and push character dynamics further,” Lee Jung-jae revealed in a recent interview, while actor Kang Ae-sim, who plays Geum-ja (Player 149), added, “It will move you to tears.” The fresh challenges are expected to heighten tension, testing players’ physical and emotional limits.
The return of the VIPs
Hwang also teased the return of the VIPs, the wealthy spectators who bet on the deadly competition. “They’re coming. Their helicopter is already in the air,” he told USA Today. The VIPs’ sinister presence promises to bring a new layer of conflict as their influence shapes the events unfolding on the island.
A teaser that hints at twists
Though Netflix has not yet released an official trailer for series 3, fans were treated to a brief teaser on X in January 2025. The 15-second clip introduced Chul-su, a boy counterpart to the eerie doll Young-hee, hinting at another unsettling twist in the deadly games.
Release timeline
Squid Game series 3 is slated for a 2025 release, with a summer or autumn debut most likely. “I would expect it to launch around summer or autumn next year,” Hwang had told Variety in December 2024.

From the Washington Post to CBS News, 2024 was the year of the liberal newsroom revolt
There has been a growing trend at legacy media organizations where progressive staffers ignite a war with their employers over an editorial position that does not align with their own.
Among the most memorable clashes in recent years include the social media revolt by New York Times staffers over the infamous Tom Cotton op-ed in 2020 and the open attacks by CNN employees over the network’s Trump town hall in 2023.
In 2024, that trend exploded across multiple news outlets. These were the biggest newsroom revolts of the year:
NBC’s hiring (and firing) of Ronna McDaniel
NBC News was engulfed in a firestorm fueled by its own staffers after the network announced in March it had hired former Republican National Committee chair Ronna McDaniel as a contributor.
The practice of major news organizations hiring ex-lawmakers, government officials and political insiders has existed for decades and has largely been non-controversial. But a chorus of NBC talent, particularly from its liberal cable arm MSNBC, publicly disavowed McDaniel’s hiring, citing her alleged actions in trying to block the certification of Michigan’s election results in 2020.
“We weren’t asked our opinion of the hiring, but if we were, we would have strongly objected to it for several reasons including, but not limited to, as lawyers might say, Ms. McDaniel’s role in Donald Trump’s fake elector scheme and her pressuring election officials to not certify election results while Donald Trump was on the phone,” MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough said on “Morning Joe.”
Rachel Maddow, MSNBC’s biggest star, blasted NBC’s “inexplicable” decision to hire McDaniel and expressed hope that the network would reverse its decision.
CBS News’ internal uproar over the Dokoupil-Coates interview
In October, the left-wing staff at CBS News lashed out at their colleague, “CBS Mornings” co-host Tony Dokoupil, over his tough but civil interview exchange with progressive author Ta-Nehisi Coates.
Dokoupil, who is Jewish and has children living in Israel, grilled Coates, whose new book “The Message” is harshly critical of Israel and has been rebuked by the Jewish state’s defenders for its shallow analysis of a complicated conflict.
“The content of that section would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist,” Dokoupil told Coates about one portion about his trip to Israel and the Palestinian territories, asking him “Why leave out so much” and “What is it that so particularly offends you about the existence of a Jewish state that is a Jewish safe place?”
CBS leadership reassured offended staff members that following a review, they concluded that the interview did not meet the company’s “editorial standards,” the Free Press reported, which obtained audio of the staff meeting.
While a source familiar with the matter told Fox News Digital that Dokoupil would not be punished over the interview, he was forced to meet with the network’s in-house Race and Culture Unit following complaints. According to The New York Times, the conversation “focused on Mr. Dokoupil’s tone of voice, phrasing and body language” during the interview.

NYPD continues ‘heightened threat environment’ for Times Square New Years Eve
The New York City Police Department (NYPD) said Monday it continues to operate under a “heightened threat environment” ahead of the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration.
More than a million visitors are expected in Times Square on Tuesday to attend the 120th tradition of watching the ball drop on the stroke of the New Year.
This year, the NYPD’s class of more than 600 new recruits will work their first detail Tuesday night. At a press conference about security preparations on Monday, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said there are no credible threats to the Times Square event at this time, but the department has been operating in a “heightened threat environment” since the one-year anniversary of the Oct. 7, 2023, attacks in Israel.
New York City has seen mass demonstrations against Israel, including the encampments, antisemitic rallying cries and clashes with police seen at Columbia University and New York University earlier this year.
ERIC ADAMS REPORTEDLY SIGNALING HE WILL COOPERATE WITH TRUMP, ICE TO CRACKDOWN ON IMMIGRATION
“We remain vigilant,” Tisch told reporters. “The public can expect to see a tremendous amount of police resources deployed throughout the area and across the city. That includes members of some of our elite specialized units, including our emergency services unit, who will be strategically deployed throughout the area on rooftops. Our K-9 teams, who will patrol with bomb sniffing dogs. Our aviation unit will be in the skies scanning the event and the surrounding areas with special attention to the bridges and other landmarks. And of course, our drones will be deployed overhead to monitor the crowds in real time and watch for any suspicious or unusual activity.”
Last year, the NYPD had about four drone teams inside the “bow tie” and “frozen area” around Times Square for New Year’s Eve. That will increase to six drone teams – four inside the bow tie and two on the outer perimeter – this year, NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry said, adding that mobile drone teams will also operate around Manhattan and the rest of the city and monitor activity over the water as well.

A reporter at the press conference asked the NYPD if any extra security measures are being brought into Times Square in the wake of the suspected terror attack on a Christmas market in Germany last week. A psychiatrist from Saudi Arabia was reportedly arrested in connection to the Dec. 20 car-ramming at a crowded Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, that killed five people, including a nine-year-old boy, and injured over 200 others.
“Every year we formulate our plan based on incidents that are happening around the world, here in the city,” Rebecca Weiner, NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism, said. “Christmas markets – you just flagged a terrible incident in Germany involving Christmas markets – they’re a persistent, high-risk target, and so, frankly, are New Year’s Eve celebrations around the world, which is why we put so much emphasis on all of the resources that are here focused on keeping this city and this event safe. So it’s absolutely calibrated to what’s happening overseas.”
Noting precautions against vehicle ramming incidents, including NYPD trucks and blocked cars at the scene, Weiner added, “We are very confident it’s going to be a safe and enjoyable evening for all.”

The NYPD was also asked to address the emerging threat of the Venezuelan gang known as Tren de Aragua (TdA). Weiner said there was no specific threat related to the gang in connection to the Times Square event, but the TdA matter is “just something persistently that we deal with in the large panoply of crime issues that we are very good at handling all year.”
“There’s been a ton of work being done by our detective bureau, patrol bureau, our bureau over in intel and counterterrorism,” she said. “This is an issue that we’re dealing with not specific to New Year’s Eve, Times Square. But some newly emergent threats, newly emergent crime patterns that we have, again, tried to combat very early and very deeply so that we haven’t had the entrenchment of some of this gang here in the city that you’ve seen elsewhere across the country.”
The NYPD will also utilize pickpocket teams, as well as “hotel response teams” to monitor for suspicious activity or other “anomalous” events.

Tisch said all manholes, mailboxes, vending machines and litter baskets in the “frozen zone” around Times Square will be either sealed or removed, and frozen safety lanes will be created around the event using blocker cars and concrete barriers.
“And, as always, there will be plenty of security measures that you will not see,” the police commissioner said. “No one handles large-scale events like this better than the NYPD, but of course we do not do it alone. The Joint Operations Center will be fully activated with all of our city, state, and federal partners.”

Amid a string of high-profile subway crimes and killings – notably, Daniel Penny’s acquittal and the arrest of an illegal immigrant who allegedly set a sleeping woman on fire – New York City Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD officials still urged crowds to use public transportation to get to the Times Square New Year’s Eve event. Despite forecasts of rain, NYPD officials said no umbrellas will be allowed in the viewing area. Backpacks, large bags, coolers, chairs and alcohol are also prohibited.
As New York City prepares to ring in the new year, the NYPD has announced that they will be maintaining a “heightened threat environment” in Times Square for the annual New Year’s Eve celebration. This decision comes in light of recent terrorist attacks around the world, as well as the ongoing threat of lone wolf attacks. The NYPD will be increasing security measures, including the presence of heavily armed officers, bomb-sniffing dogs, and radiation detectors.
Despite the increased security, officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to authorities. Times Square is expected to be packed with revelers, and the NYPD is committed to ensuring the safety of everyone in attendance.
As we look forward to a new year full of promise and hope, let us also remember the importance of staying vigilant and working together to keep our city safe. Happy New Year, and may 2022 be a year of peace and prosperity for all.
