Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals convinced me: Battle passes should never expire

Sometimes I regret ever accepting the battle pass as a concept. It’s not like there was much of a choice about it—before I’d ever engaged with one myself they were already everywhere. It all happened so fast: After gaming’s last big dust-up with loot boxes in 2017, it was like the entire industry collectively switched from one business model to another overnight. I never loved the idea of a cosmetics catalog fueled by FOMO and perpetual grind, but it did sound like the better alternative to following the loot box to its eventual casino-shaped conclusion.

With hindsight, it’s clear the battle pass got…well, a pass, but that’s starting to change. Two of 2024’s biggest multiplayer hits have one thing in common: Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals sell battle passes that never expire.

As a dedicated gamer, I have recently been diving into the worlds of Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals, and one thing that has become abundantly clear to me is the importance of battle passes that never expire.

Battle passes have become a popular feature in many multiplayer games, offering players a way to earn rewards through completing challenges and progressing through levels. However, many games have battle passes that expire after a certain period of time, forcing players to rush through content in order to unlock all the rewards before they disappear.

This rush to complete battle passes can often detract from the overall enjoyment of the game, as players feel pressured to grind through challenges rather than taking the time to fully immerse themselves in the gameplay experience. In contrast, games like Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals offer battle passes that never expire, allowing players to progress at their own pace and truly savor the journey.

By removing the time constraint on battle passes, these games encourage players to explore all that the game has to offer, from the intricate storylines to the challenging gameplay mechanics. This not only enhances the overall gaming experience, but also fosters a sense of community among players as they work together to achieve their goals.

In conclusion, the decision to have battle passes that never expire in games like Helldivers 2 and Marvel Rivals has convinced me that this feature should be a standard in all multiplayer games. By allowing players to progress at their own pace and fully enjoy all that the game has to offer, developers can create a more immersive and satisfying gaming experience for all.

  • Helldivers 2 Puts Limits On Crossover Content

Helldivers 2 Puts Limits On Crossover Content

Crossover content can be a touchy subject for some. On occasion, and in games specifically built around the idea, crossovers can be good fun – Final Fantasy 7’s Cloud appearing in Smash Bros was great to see. But if Cloud Strife were to quickscope you in a round of Call of Duty, that may feel a little different.

With recent announcements from the Helldivers scene, the topic of appropriate crossovers has come up again. And, looking to settle things quickly, the developers have drawn a line in the sand – or more specifically, a line on an image made by a fan.

The original version of this image was posted to the Helldivers subreddit by u/lyndonguitar, who likely wasn’t expecting an answer as direct as this.

Johan Pilestedt, the CCO for Arrowhead Games, is who we have to thank for making Master Chief sad (again). Imperial Guard fans rejoyce – you’re on the table, but just barely.

Helldivers 2 Studio Compares Future Challenges To Frodo And Sam’s Journey To Mordor

Helldivers 2 developer, Arrowhead Games, believes the studio’s strength is in “camaraderie”.

Pilestedt went on to further specify what Arrowhead would and would not greenlight. Another image shows it all in plain text:

It’s also worth noting that all selections left of the line are less recognizable – or at least, less iconic than say, TMNT’s Shredder. This opens the door to some pretty big-name IPs, but avoids using designs that are too closely associated with one specific brand.

Arrowhead Wants To Do Crossovers Right

Helldivers fans want crossover designs to fit within the world they fight for, and seek to maintain immersion whenever possible. The… let’s say “overzealous” nature of Call of Duty’s crossovers have given everyone something to avoid, and players are happy to see a firm stance from Arrowhead.

But as Destructoid points out, this may not be so simple. Arrowhead also wants to stay faithful to the crossover’s featured IP – and that means changing as little as possible about the original design.

Helldivers 2 Player Reminds Community That “Female Patriots Exist” So Stop Making It Weird

Helldivers 2 doesn’t seem to be hitting the mark when it comes to making some female players feel comfortable while using voice chat.

This creates an issue with art style already, but can also lead to problems when part of a design is an explicit reference to some other piece of fiction. Going back to the example of Warhammer 40k’s Imperial Guard – you can likely adapt things like plasma weaponry, but what about emblems and logos?

At the very least, Arrowhead’s stance is one that’s far stricter than, really, any other game that does explicit crossovers. The Doomslayer will be staying far away from any of this – but as for what’s next in the pipeline? Time will tell.

Fire. Blood. Lead. Napalm. War is beautiful. But only when it’s used to remind us how horrible it truly is.

Fans of the popular game Helldivers were excited when news of a sequel was announced. However, it seems that Helldivers 2 will be putting limits on crossover content from other games.

The developers have stated that while they are open to including crossover content in Helldivers 2, they want to focus on creating a unique and cohesive world for the game. This means that any potential crossover content will need to fit within the established lore and tone of Helldivers 2.

While some fans may be disappointed by this news, others see it as a positive step towards ensuring that Helldivers 2 maintains its own identity and isn’t simply a mishmash of content from other games.

Ultimately, it seems that Helldivers 2 will be a game that stands on its own merits, rather than relying on crossover content to draw in players. Only time will tell how this decision will impact the game’s reception, but for now, fans can rest assured that Helldivers 2 will be a unique and exciting experience.

Helldivers 2 Fans Want A Cyberpunk 2077 Crossover

    Summary

    • Helldivers 2 fans are calling for a crossover with Cyberpunk 2077 following the game’s recent Killzone crossover.
    • Fans think it would be neat if the Trauma Team’s armor was put into the game, or armor from Maxtac and Arasaka.
    • We know that CD Projekt Red likes a crossover, having recently teamed up with Fortnite and Balatro, so the ball is in your court, Arrowhead. Do it for Super Earth!

Helldivers 2 fans have currently been enjoying – and complaining about – the game’s recent crossover with PlayStation’s Killzone franchise, bringing some of the Helghast’s iconic armor into the game. It’s the first proper crossover that Helldivers 2 has offered fans, and despite initial gripes about the price of things, it’s been largely well-received.

We can call it a successful trial for developer Arrowhead Studios, and if it hasn’t been scared away from the idea by the controversy, then we can likely expect more in the future. It’s led many fans to wonder which games could realistically fit into the world of Helldivers 2, and one Reddit user has come up with a fairly popular suggestion – Cyberpunk 2077.

Helldivers 2 Fans Want A Cyberpunk 2077 Crossover

Of course, Helldivers CCO Johan Pilestedt has said in the past that Arrowhead doesn’t want to dilute the game with crossovers, so don’t go expecting V or Johnny Silverhand to start running around blowing away the Illuminate. Instead, Reddit user Emperor_8 has suggested that Arrowhead team up with CD Projekt Red to bring the Trauma Team’s armor to the game.

That idea has struck a chord with fellow Helldivers fans, such as Reddit user Scarptre, who thinks it’s a great idea and that the Trauma Team armor actually fits “looks way more Helldiver-esque than the Killzone ones”. Some fans take it a step further, such as Eh_Meh_Badabeh, who would also potentially like to see Maxtac or Arasaka armors too.

Killzone Deserves More Than A Helldivers 2 Crossover

Arrowhead is now giving away its second load of crossover cosmetics for free.

Many are also pointing out that it would be a perfect crossover to deliver the Medic Warbond, which has been a longtime request from fans, especially those that want to roleplay as more of a support Helldiver. It’s just convincing Arrowhead that it’s a good idea now, as CD Projekt Red is likely more than down for the crossover.

Cyberpunk 2077 is being thrown into almost everything these days, having recently crossed over with the likes of Fortnite and Balatro. Lucy from Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is also coming to Guilty Gear Strive as the game’s first guest character, so it’s pretty much just a case of whether Arrowhead is down for it. Come on guys, do it for the sake of Super Earth. That, and my immaculate drip.
