We cannot rule out the possibility of the Raiders — and new minority owner Tom Brady — making an aggressive push to draft Shedeur Sanders. There’s a chance Sanders’ connection with Brady will make it too dicey for Las Vegas to simply hope and wait for him to fall to No. 6 overall.

In a stunning turn of events, the 2025 NFL Mock Draft has shaken up the league as Tom Brady, now retired from playing, has stepped into a new role as the orchestrator of a major trade for the Las Vegas Raiders.

With the top three picks in the draft all going to quarterback-needy teams, the Raiders were determined to make a bold move to secure their future franchise signal-caller. Brady, who has transitioned into a front office role with the Raiders, used his influence and connections to orchestrate a massive trade up the draft board.

In a blockbuster deal, the Raiders traded up from their original spot at No. 12 to the third overall pick, giving up a package of future draft picks and players to make the move. With the third pick in hand, the Raiders selected their quarterback of the future, landing a top prospect who they believe can lead them to success for years to come.

Meanwhile, the first two picks in the draft saw quarterbacks go off the board, with highly touted prospects going to teams in need of a franchise signal-caller. The top three picks being quarterbacks marks a historic moment in NFL draft history, showcasing the importance of the position in today’s game.

As the draft unfolds, the Raiders look to build a strong foundation around their new quarterback, with Brady leading the charge in the front office. With his unparalleled experience and knowledge of the game, Brady is determined to bring a championship to Las Vegas and solidify his legacy as one of the greatest football minds in the game.

  • Donovan Clingan returns, helps fuel Trail Blazers’ win at Hornets

Portland Trail Blazers center Donovan Clingan returned from missing five games with a sprained left ankle at the perfect time.

The Blazers closed out a three-game trip Friday night at the Charlotte Hornets without the services of starting center Deandre Ayton (knee) and backup Robert Williams III (hand).

Clingan, making just his third start since Nov. 23, delivered four points, 13 rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots to help lead the Blazers to a 102-97 win.

“I was feeling good,” Clingan told reporters at the Spectrum Center. “Obviously, I had to get my wind under me a little bit. I was a little tired at first.”

Clingan did all of his statistical damage in just over 17 minutes while on a minutes restriction.

“His minutes were great,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups told reporters. “I just wish we had more. I thought he dominated his minutes in terms of on the glass, blocking shots. He was a presence down there.”

Clingan has had a productive rookie season, but injuries to his knee and ankle have caused him to miss 13 games. His scoring has been spotty (5.6 points per game), but per 36 minutes he averages 14 rebounds and 3.3 blocked shots per game.

Portland Trail Blazers v Charlotte Hornets

Clingan pretty much matched his average for blocks with three swats in the first quarter.

“That’s his gift and I thought he set the tone for us tonight,” Billups said.

Clingan’s presence, Billups said, allowed the team to play aggressive defense on the perimeter, which contributed to the Hornets shooting just 37.6% from the field. That’s tied for the third-lowest percentage the Blazers have allowed this season.

“He gives us so much confidence to know that we can pressure people,” Billups said. “When we know he’s back there, he’s gonna try to clean up all the mistakes that we make with us trying to be so aggressive.”

Blazers guard Anferne Simons, who led the team with 27 points, said Clingan’s defensive presence was felt.

“Donovan played great,” Simons told reporters. “Altering shots at the rim. Just being a presence down low. That’s all we need him to be. Play hard. Get some offensive rebounds. Ge some putbacks. Just doing the dirty work.”

For Clingan, impacting the Blazers’ defense during the win makes for a great evening.

“That’s what I love,” he said. “I love defense. I love guarding. I just want to have a presence in the paint. I want to alter shots. I want to block shots. I want to make people not take shots.”

The Blazers, 3-0 on this trip, return home to host seven games starting at 3 p.m. Sunday against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Donovan Clingan, the highly-touted center prospect, made his much-anticipated return to the lineup for the Portland Trail Blazers and made an immediate impact in their victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Clingan, who had been sidelined with a knee injury, showed no signs of rust as he dominated the paint on both ends of the floor. His presence on the defensive end was especially felt, as he swatted away shots and altered numerous attempts at the rim.

Offensively, Clingan showcased his scoring ability with an array of post moves and put-backs, finishing with a double-double and helping to fuel the Trail Blazers’ offense.

His return couldn’t have come at a better time for the Trail Blazers, who were in need of a boost after a string of tough losses. With Clingan back in the lineup, the team looked rejuvenated and played with a renewed sense of energy and purpose.

The victory over the Hornets was a statement win for the Trail Blazers, who now look to build on their momentum and make a push up the standings. With Clingan back in the fold, the team’s potential seems limitless, and fans are excited to see what he can bring to the table in the games to come.

  • Southern California rain helps firefighters but creates risk of toxic ash runoff

LOS ANGELES (AP) — After weeks of windy and dry weather, rain has fallen in parched Southern California and is expected to aid firefighters who are mopping up multiple wildfires. But potentially heavy downpours on charred hillsides could bring new troubles such as toxic ash runoff.

Los Angeles County crews spent much of the past week removing vegetation, shoring up slopes and reinforcing roads in devastated areas of the Palisades and Eaton fires, which reduced entire neighborhoods to rubble and ash after breaking out during powerful winds Jan. 7.

Most of the region was forecast to get around an inch (about 2.5 centimeters) of precipitation over several days, but “the threat is high enough to prepare for the worst-case scenario” of localized cloudbursts causing mud and debris to flow down hills, the National Weather Service said on social media.

“So the problem would be if one of those showers happens to park itself over a burn area,” weather service meteorologist Carol Smith said. “That could be enough to create debris flows.”

Rainfall that began late Saturday was expected to increase Sunday and possibly last into early Tuesday, forecasters said. Flood watches were issued for some burn areas, while snow was likely in the mountains.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued an executive order last week to expedite cleanup efforts and mitigate the environmental impacts of fire-related pollutants. LA County supervisors also approved an emergency motion to install flood-control infrastructure and expedite and remove sediment in fire-impacted areas.

Fire crews filled sandbags for communities, while county workers installed barriers and cleared drainage pipes and basins.

Officials cautioned that ash in recent burn zones was a toxic mix of incinerated cars, electronics, batteries, building materials, paints, furniture and other household items. It contains pesticides, asbestos, plastics and lead. Residents were urged to wear protective gear while cleaning up.

Concerns about post-fire debris flows have been especially high since 2018, when the town of Montecito, up the coast from LA, was ravaged by mudslides after a downpour hit mountain slopes burned bare by a huge blaze. Hundreds of homes were damaged and 23 people died.

While the impending wet weather ended weeks of dangerous gusts and reduced humidity, several wildfires were still burning Saturday across Southern California. Those included the Palisades and Eaton fires, which killed at least 28 people and destroyed more than 14,000 structures. Containment of the Palisades Fire reached 81% on Saturday and the Eaton Fire was 95% contained.

In northern Los Angeles County, firefighters made significant progress against the Hughes Fire, which prompted evacuations for tens of thousands of people when it erupted on Wednesday in mountains near Lake Castaic.

In San Diego County, there was still little containment of the Border 2 Fire as it burned through a remote area of the Otay Mountain Wilderness near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The rain was expected to snap a near-record streak of dry weather for Southern California. Much of the region has received less than 5% of the average rainfall for this point in the water year, which began Oct. 1, the Los Angeles Times reported Saturday.

Most of Southern California is currently in “extreme drought” or “severe drought,” according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

Southern California has been experiencing a welcome reprieve from the devastating wildfires that have been raging across the region. The recent rain showers have helped firefighters gain control over the flames and protect homes and communities. However, with the rain comes a new set of challenges – the risk of toxic ash runoff.

The ash from the burned vegetation and structures can contain harmful chemicals and toxins that can be washed into nearby rivers, streams, and waterways. This runoff poses a threat to the environment and public health, as it can contaminate drinking water sources and harm aquatic life.

Authorities are urging residents to be cautious and avoid contact with any standing water or debris that may be contaminated with ash. It is important to take necessary precautions to protect yourself and your family from potential health risks.

While the rain is a much-needed relief for firefighters and residents, it is crucial to remain vigilant and mindful of the environmental impacts of the wildfires. By working together to mitigate the risks of toxic ash runoff, we can help protect our communities and the natural resources of Southern California.

LOS ANGELES — After weeks of windy and dry weather, rain has fallen in parched Southern California and is expected to aid firefighters who are mopping up multiple wildfires. But potentially heavy downpours on charred hillsides could bring new troubles such as toxic ash runoff.

The recent rain in Southern California has been a welcome relief for firefighters battling numerous wildfires across the region. However, while the rain has helped to contain the fires, it has also created a new concern – the risk of toxic ash runoff.

The ash from burned vegetation can contain harmful chemicals and pollutants that can be washed into rivers, streams, and reservoirs by the rain. This runoff poses a significant risk to both wildlife and humans, as it can contaminate water sources and soil.

Officials are urging residents to be cautious and avoid contact with the runoff, as well as to properly dispose of any ash that may have accumulated on their property. They are also working to implement measures to mitigate the impact of the runoff on the environment.

While the rain has certainly been beneficial in the fight against the wildfires, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with toxic ash runoff and take appropriate precautions to protect both ourselves and our environment.

  • Gianna Kneepkens’ career game helps Utah women hold off BYU for 3rd straight rivalry win

PROVO — You can only hold down Utah’s Gianna Kneepkens for so long.

BYU found that out the hard way Saturday night.

Kneepkens poured in a career-high 32 points, including six 3-pointers, and Mayè Tourè added 21 points and eight rebounds as Utah women’s basketball held off BYU 81-76 Saturday afternoon in front of an announced crowd of 4,889 fans at the Marriott Center.

It’s the third time in as many games that Kneepkens, who had just one shot in the first quarter, has scored at least 26 points in the past three games.

“When we get going, we’re really hard to guard,” said Kneepkens, who scored all but 5 of her points in the final three quarters. “It’s just figuring out how to do that for 40 minutes every game.”

Delaney Gibb led BYU with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that cut the deficit as low as 73-70.

But Kneepkins made seven consecutive free throws to help the Utes (15-5, 6-3 Big 12) ice a third straight rivalry win to improve to 69-43 all-time in the series.

Amari Whiting added 12 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals for BYU (10-9, 1-7 Big 12), which got 12 points and five assists from Kemery Congdon — the former Kemery Martin who initially signed with the Utes out of Corner Canyon High.

“Rivalry game; that’s exactly what it was,” said BYU coach Amber Whiting, who fell to 0-3 in her career against Utah with the Cougars’ fourth consecutive loss of the season. “We put together a more complete game than we have in the past, but hats off to Utah; they really brought it.”

But the first conference game between the two in-state rivals since both left the Mountain West in 2011 was all about Kneepkens, whose 2023-24 season ended early last Dec. 2 with a noncontact foot injury against the Cougars in an 87-68 win at the Huntsman Center.

“She had to work for everything she got,” Utah first-year head coach Gavin Petersen said of Gibb. “You’re not going to stop a player like that; she’s really good.

“But you’re not going to stop a player like this, too,” he added, signaling toward Kneepkens sitting next to him.

Utah struggled with turnovers early, including nine in the first quarter that led to 10 points for BYU and a 21-15 deficit through 10 minutes.

The Cougars’ season-long turnover bugaboo wasn’t much better, with seven in the first frame. But BYU converted 53.3% from the field, including 3-pointers by Whiting, Congdon and Emma Calvert and a balanced supporting cast to take the early 6-point advantage.

“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot with a lot of uncharacteristic unforced turnovers,” Petersen said.

Kneepkens gave the Utes their first lead of the game, capping an 11-0 run from distance with 5:03 left in the half.

Whiting responded with her second 3-pointer since Jan. 8 less than 30 seconds later — and moments after Jenna Johnson was helped to the locker room with an apparent ankle/lower leg injury to put the hosts back in front (she returned to the game after halftime).

But Kneepkens got going in the second quarter, scoring 11 of her 16 points, including three 3-pointers before halftime, to lift the Utes to a 37-35 edge at the break.

“Props to my teammates for finding me,” said the fourth-year junior from Duluth, Minnesota. “I just tried to find the gaps in how they’re guarding me, along with passes from my teammates and great screens from my teammates. It was just about finding holes in their defense.”

BYU cooled off, too, connecting on just 5-of-13 from the field in the second quarter. Calvert had 5 points and two rebounds in the first half and Whiting scored 7 with three assists and two steals — but both were limited with two fouls while Kneepkens went to work.

Gibb tied the game with a 6-0 run with just over a minute remaining in the third quarter, 53-53, but the Utes hit four triples to the Cougars’ two in the third quarter to take a 55-54 edge into the final frame.

Utah led for most of the second half — and seven more minutes than the Cougars’ 13 in all — but never by more than 9 in the final period.

The Utes are back home Friday to host Arizona at the Huntsman Center (6:30 p.m. MST, ESPN+).

BYU hosts Colorado at 7:30 p.m. MST Wednesday (ESPN+) before traveling to Arizona State on the weekend.

In a thrilling matchup between two cross-town rivals, Gianna Kneepkens delivered a career-high performance to lead the Utah women’s basketball team to a hard-fought victory over BYU. Kneepkens’ dominant play on both ends of the court proved to be the difference as the Utes held off a late surge from the Cougars to secure their third straight win in the rivalry.

The junior guard showcased her scoring ability by pouring in a team-high 25 points, including several clutch baskets down the stretch to keep BYU at bay. Kneepkens also made her presence felt on the defensive end with a career-high five steals, disrupting the Cougars’ offense and creating scoring opportunities for her teammates.

With the win, Utah improved to 3-0 in the rivalry series this season and extended their winning streak to five games overall. The victory was a statement win for the Utes, who have now firmly established themselves as the top team in the state and a force to be reckoned with in the conference.

Kneepkens’ standout performance earned her praise from teammates and coaches alike, with head coach Lisa Fortier hailing her as a key contributor to the team’s success. As the Utes look to build on their momentum and continue their push towards the postseason, Kneepkens’ stellar play will undoubtedly be a crucial factor in their quest for success.

Overall, Gianna Kneepkens’ career game was a shining example of her talent and determination, and a reminder of the impact she can have on her team’s success. Utah fans can look forward to more standout performances from Kneepkens as she continues to make her mark on the court and lead the Utes to victory.
