  • Gladiator 2 Passes New Box Office Milestone To Enter Highest-Grossing R-Rated Movies List

    Gladiator II
has just crossed a new box office milestone, entering the list of the top-grossing R-rated movies ever. Directed by Ridley Scott, the sword-and-sandal epic serves as a sequel to 2000’s Gladiator, following Lucius (Paul Mescal) as he becomes a hero of the Colosseum. Gladiator 2 reviews have been generally positive from critics since the movie’s release last November, and the film, which also stars Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal, became available on VOD starting December 24 while remaining available in theaters.

According to new data from The Numbers, Gladiator 2 has now grossed a total of $454 million worldwide, comprising $171 million domestic and $282 million from overseas territories. This means the sequel is now among the top 30 highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time, currently occupying 29th place behind 300 (2007) and in front of Gladiator. It’s worth mentioning, however, that while The Numbers pegs Gladiator‘s worldwide total at $451 million, other sources put the total at around $460 million, meaning Scott’s sequel might actually be in 30th place, behind it.

Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) is the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever with a worldwide box office total of $1.338 billion.

What Gladiator 2’s New Box Office Milestone Means For The Movie

Why The Ridley Scott Film Isn’t Actually A Success

Even though it is now among the top 30 highest-grossing R-rated movies ever, Gladiator 2‘s box office haul still might not make it a success. Scott has confirmed that the movie ended up coming in $10 million under budget, but, even so, the film carries a reported budget of around $250M or just under. This would make its break-even point likely around $500 million, but this figure could be as high as $625 million.

Gladiator 2 Does One Thing Better Than The First Movie, Continuing A Ridley Scott Trend

A specific Ridley Scott trend has been evident throughout his long career, with Gladiator 2 continuing this by improving upon its predecessor.

After months’ worth of VOD sales and a streaming licensing deal, Gladiator 2 may end up turning a profit in the end, but it likely won’t be much. It’s also entirely possible it’ll lose money. Either way, Scott’s enthusiasm to make Gladiator 3 seems unlikely to be enough to actually get another film off the ground, especially since such a production would probably require a similarly large price tag. This marks the second film of Scott’s in a row that didn’t totally perform at the box office, with Napoleon having been a major flop in 2023.

Made on a $250 million budget, Napoleon grossed only $221 million.

Our Take On Gladiator 2’s Box Office

Scott’s Sequel Has Aspects Worth Praising

Lucius and wife Arishat in Gladiator 2

Love for the original Gladiator remains strong, but evidently not strong enough to get audiences to theaters to watch the sequel. Plus, despite the impressive Gladiator 2 cast, the follow-up just isn’t as good as the original, with Lucius’ story ultimately not as compelling as Maximus’.

Still, there are many aspects of Gladiator 2 worth praising, including Washington’s performance and the thrilling battle sequences. Scott remains a filmmaker who is incredibly gifted at bringing complex visual sequences to life. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like he’ll be bringing his talents to the Colosseum again, with Gladiator 2 not performing quite as well as it needed to to justify a return to this franchise.

Gladiator 2, the highly-anticipated sequel to the iconic 2000 film, has officially entered the highest-grossing R-rated movies list after passing a new box office milestone. The film, which stars Russell Crowe reprising his role as Maximus, has been a hit with audiences and critics alike, earning rave reviews and generating significant buzz.

With its latest box office earnings, Gladiator 2 has now surpassed other R-rated classics such as Deadpool and The Matrix to claim a spot on the prestigious list. Fans of the original Gladiator have eagerly flocked to theaters to see the continuation of Maximus’ epic story, leading to the film’s impressive box office success.

Director Ridley Scott’s vision for Gladiator 2 has clearly resonated with audiences, as the film continues to exceed expectations and dominate the box office. With its thrilling action sequences, powerful performances, and gripping storyline, Gladiator 2 has solidified its place as one of the highest-grossing R-rated movies of all time.

As fans eagerly await the next chapter in Maximus’ journey, Gladiator 2’s box office success serves as a testament to the enduring popularity of the franchise. With its impressive box office milestone, Gladiator 2 has cemented its status as a modern classic and a must-see film for fans of epic storytelling and thrilling action.

Wicked Film Surpasses Mamma Mia! as Highest-Grossing Stage Musical Adaptation

It seems the Wicked movie is very, very popular. The first half of Universal’s two-part adaptation of the international hit musical Wicked, which officially premiered November 22, has surpassed the 2008 release of Mamma Mia! to become the highest-grossing adaptation of any stage musical in box-office history.

The Jon M. Chu-directed film, co-starring Tony winner Cynthia Erivo and Grammy winner
Ariana Grande, has taken in $634,378,535 globally after only six weeks in release. By comparison, the Meryl Streep-led Mamma Mia! took in $610,002,542 during its entire cinematic release.

Domestically, Wicked—which will be available for home viewers beginning December 31—has earned $424,230,535 domestically with an international box-office take of $210,148,000. The second half of the film, titled Wicked: For Good, will arrive in cinemas November 21, 2025. Will For Good break records next year? Check back on Playbill.com to find out.

It should be noted, however, when figures are adjusted for inflation, the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews, is technically the highest-grossing musical adaptation of all time. The 1965 film grossed $159,484,051 worldwide, approximately $1.3 billion in today’s figures.
