  • Pete Carroll hired: What he brings to Las Vegas Raiders

It’s a new era for the Las Vegas Raiders as hey are beginning the Pete Carroll Era.

There is a lot to unpack, but there are some aspects of the hire that stand out above other.

To break it down, let’s look the biggest reason to be optimistic about Carroll’s tenure and the biggest worry spot.

He can be a stabilizing factor:

Carroll is a true NFL head coach. He belongs in the role. He has 18 years of NFL head-coaching experience and he has a pristine reputation for being a quality football man. The job will not be too big for him and he will also respect the job and represent the Raiders well. He is a master culture builder and his influence on this roster and franchise will be felt immediately. The players will quickly know they are in good hands and their leader knows what he’s doing. That wasn’t always the case the past few years. This is a true leader who is in control.

    The quarterback situation:

This is not Carroll’s fault, but it’s now his burden. While Carroll will bring stability, leadership, vision and a clear path toward building a great program, the Raiders won’t be able to breakthrough until they find their next quarterback. Carroll and a band-aid quarterback will only have a ceiling of mediocrity. That won’t work in the AFC West. So, unless and until the Raiders figure out the most important position on the field, the Raiders will be an incomplete work in progress.

    Conclusion:

The Raiders are halfway there. They found a competent coach. Not they have to work on the roster.

After much speculation and anticipation, the Las Vegas Raiders have officially hired Pete Carroll as their new head coach. Carroll, who previously coached the Seattle Seahawks for over a decade, brings a wealth of experience and success to the Raiders.

One of Carroll’s biggest strengths is his ability to connect with his players and create a positive team culture. Known for his enthusiasm and energy, Carroll is sure to bring a renewed sense of excitement to the Raiders organization. His focus on building strong relationships with his players and fostering a sense of camaraderie on the team could be exactly what the Raiders need to take their performance to the next level.

Carroll is also known for his innovative coaching style and willingness to take risks. His aggressive play-calling and willingness to think outside the box have led to numerous successes throughout his coaching career. With the Raiders looking to make a splash in the AFC West, Carroll’s bold and creative approach could be just what they need to shake things up and make a statement in the league.

Overall, Pete Carroll’s hiring brings a sense of optimism and anticipation to the Las Vegas Raiders. With his proven track record of success, ability to connect with players, and innovative coaching style, the Raiders are in good hands with Carroll at the helm. Fans can look forward to an exciting new era under his leadership.

  • John Morton hired as Detroit Lions offensive coordinator

As expected, based on the way things were trending on Monday, the Detroit Lions have hired John Morton as their next offensive coordinator, as first reported by NFL Network. Morton becomes the successor to former Lions OC Ben Johnson, who was hired as the Chicago Bears’ head coach last week.

Morton, 55, was with the Lions back in 2022, serving as the team’s senior offensive assistant. Lions coach Dan Campbell credits Morton for helping them install their new offense under Johnson, and bringing in ideas for pass game coordinator Tanner Engstrand that still are with the team today.

“Johnny’s a superstar now and there’s a number of things that he did for us last year that are things that we’ve kept,” Campbell said in 2023. “And I really feel like that helped Tanner as well. And he took a lot of that, and he learned from that, and he’s grown from that and so, he’s in a good spot. He’s an asset for us.”

In the past two years, Morton has served as the Denver Broncos’ pass game coordinator under head coach Sean Payton. In 2023 with Russell Wilson as quarterback, the Broncos produced the sixth-best passer rating (96.7). In 2024, with rookie quarterback Bo Nix, they dropped to 13th, but with a strong 93.3 passer rating for the first-year passer.

With Morton’s hiring, the Lions have now replaced both of their coordinator losses this offseason. On the defensive side, former Lions linebacker coach Kelvin Sheppard was promoted to defensive coordinator to replace Aaron Glenn, who left to become the Jets head coach.

Track all of the Lions’ coaching changes for the 2025 season here.

The Detroit Lions have made a big move this offseason, hiring John Morton as their new offensive coordinator. Morton, who has a wealth of experience in the NFL, is expected to bring a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to the Lions’ offense.

With Morton at the helm, fans can expect to see a more dynamic and high-powered offense on the field. His track record of success with previous teams, including the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers, bodes well for the Lions’ future.

Head coach Dan Campbell expressed his excitement about bringing Morton on board, stating, “John is a proven offensive mind who will bring a new energy and creativity to our team. I have no doubt that he will help us take our offense to the next level and help us compete at the highest level in the league.”

Lions fans can look forward to seeing Morton’s impact on the team’s offensive performance in the upcoming season. With his expertise and leadership, the Lions are poised to make significant strides on the offensive side of the ball. Welcome aboard, John Morton! #OnePride.

  • Pete Carroll hired as Raiders coach after year out of NFL

HENDERSON, Nev. — The Las Vegas Raiders have hired Pete Carroll to became the franchise’s head coach, the team announced Saturday.

Carroll is getting a three-year deal with a fourth-year team option, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Friday.

Carroll, who turns 74 on Sept. 15, is one of four head coaches to have led teams to both a college football national championship and the Super Bowl. The others are Barry Switzer, Jimmy Johnson and Jim Harbaugh.

He will be the Raiders’ fifth coach, including interim coaches, since the franchise moved to Las Vegas from Oakland in 2020. The others were Jon Gruden, Rich Bisaccia, Josh McDaniels and Antonio Pierce.

Carroll will be the team’s ninth coach, including interims, since Raiders owner Mark Davis took over upon the death of his father, Al, in 2011. The others were Hue Jackson, Dennis Allen, Tony Sparano, Jack Del Rio, Gruden, Bisaccia, McDaniels and Pierce.

As such, Carroll represents stability and experience for a team needing both, especially since Gruden was forced to resign amid his email controversy in October 2021.

Carroll’s veteran presence is expected to mesh well with first-time general manager John Spytek, whose hiring was announced Friday, and help the team compete in an AFC West division that boasts coaching heavyweights in Kansas City (Andy Reid), Denver (Sean Payton) and Los Angeles (Harbaugh).

With the Seattle Seahawks, Carroll won Super Bowl XLVIII and a pair of NFC titles and made 10 playoff appearances in 14 years while going 137-89-1 in the regular season and 10-9 in the postseason to become the winningest coach in Seahawks history. Including his head coaching stints with the New York Jets, with whom he went 6-10 in 1994, and the New England Patriots, where he went 27-21 in three seasons with a playoff appearance from 1997 to 1999, his career record is 181-131-1.

After spending the 2000 season out of football and reshaping his coaching philosophy, Carroll was hired by USC, beginning a dominant nine-year run from 2001 to 2009 that included seven consecutive Pac-10 titles, a pair of national championships and a 97-19 record, though NCAA sanctions followed.

The Seahawks lured him away in 2010 with the promise of final say in personnel moves, something he didn’t have in either of his two previous head coaching stops.

Carroll is a defensive-minded coach who, along with Spytek, will have to address the large number of pending free agents on that side of the ball for Las Vegas. Among them: defensive ends Malcolm Koonce and K’Lavon Chaisson, linebackers Robert Spillane and Divine Deablo, cornerback Nate Hobbs, and safeties Tre’von Moehrig and Marcus Epps.

The Raiders hold the No. 6 overall draft pick and more than $108 million in salary cap space. They need an upgrade at quarterback but return first-team All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers.

Las Vegas fired Pierce as coach and Tom Telesco as general manager after one season together.

Pierce had been promoted from linebackers coach to interim coach upon the firing on Halloween night 2023 of McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler after less than two full seasons.

Las Vegas finished last in the AFC West with a 4-13 record that included a 10-game losing streak, the franchise’s longest such skid in 10 years.

After a year away from the NFL, Pete Carroll has been hired as the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. The former Seattle Seahawks coach brings a wealth of experience and success to the team, having led the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances and one championship during his tenure.

Carroll’s energetic coaching style and ability to develop young talent make him a perfect fit for the Raiders, who are looking to rebuild and compete in a tough AFC West division. With his proven track record of success, fans can expect the Raiders to make significant strides under Carroll’s leadership.

The hiring of Carroll signals a new era for the Raiders, who are hoping to turn their fortunes around and become a perennial contender in the NFL. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting season ahead under the guidance of Coach Carroll. #RaiderNation #PeteCarroll #NFLCoach

  • 49ers news: Brant Boyer hired as special teams coordinator

The San Francisco 49ers announced that they’ve named former New York Jets special teams coordinator Brant Boyer as their special teams coordinator. Boyer has held the same title with the Jets since 2016. Prior to that, he was an assistant on special teams with the Indianapolis Colts from 2012-2015.

Boyer is also a former NFL player. The Miami Dolphins drafted him in the sixth round in 1994. He played linebacker and special teams for 11 seasons in the NFL.

With those Colts teams, punter Pat McAfee and kicker Adam Vinatieri both earned first-team All-Pro honors, including nods to the Pro Bowls. The 49ers struggled mightily in 2024 in those two areas.

The Jets were abysmal on special teams for the first half of the season but, per DVOA, finished No. 1 in the NFL during the second half of the season. Kyle Shanahan was vocal about finding somebody who not only has built game plans but can adjust. It sounds like that wasn’t an issue for Boyer in New York.

The 49ers were often on the wrong side of special teams’ fakes and miscues, and that’s been the case in most seasons under Kyle Shanahan. Hopefully, Boyer can get most of those mistakes under control.

Jacob Cowing and Deebo Samuel were excellent returners, so he has that going for him. But the kicking game cost the 49ers time and time again. We’ll see what Boyer’s plan is when it comes to fixing the kicking woes.

The pivot from Nick Sorensen to Boyer is fascinating. I’d be curious to know if it came down to how each coach felt about the personnel and whether they wanted to bring back a specific player, or if Boyer’s life-long experience gave him the edge.

The San Francisco 49ers have announced the hiring of Brant Boyer as their new special teams coordinator. Boyer comes to the 49ers with a wealth of experience, having previously served as the special teams coordinator for the New York Jets.

Boyer is widely regarded as one of the top special teams coaches in the NFL, and his hiring is sure to bolster the 49ers’ special teams unit. Under Boyer’s guidance, the Jets consistently fielded one of the best special teams units in the league, and 49ers fans can expect similar success in San Francisco.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan expressed his excitement about Boyer joining the 49ers coaching staff, stating, “Brant has a proven track record of success and we believe he will be a valuable asset to our team. We look forward to seeing the impact he will have on our special teams unit.”

Boyer’s hiring comes as part of a larger coaching staff overhaul for the 49ers, as they look to bounce back from a disappointing season. With Boyer now on board, the 49ers are poised to make significant improvements on special teams and compete at a higher level in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on the 49ers as they continue to make moves in the offseason.

  • Former Purdue head coach Ryan Walters hired as new Washington DC

Former Purdue head coach Ryan Walters hired as new Washington DC

Ryan Walters has found his next job on the heels of his tenure in West Lafayette. The former Purdue head coach has been hired as Washington’s new defensive coordinator, the team announced. Walters joins head coach Jedd Fisch’s staff that saw now former defensive coordinator Steven Belichick leave the program to join his father, Bill, at North Carolina.

The move comes less than a month after Walters was fired by Purdue following a 5-19 mark across two seasons at the helm of the Boilermakers’ program, with a 1-11 record in year two, which led to the move by Mike Bobinski.

Walters got the Purdue job after a stellar stint as defensive coordinator at Illinois and Missouri, which thrust him into contention for the job at Colorado, in addition to the Boilermakers. In his last season as a defensive coordinator at Illinois, Walters helped orchestrate one of the best units in the nation, surrendering 13.8 points and 286.8 yards per game, which were both in the top five nationally in 2022.

Walters spent the previous seven season as a co-defensive coordinator or defensive coordinator leading up to his first head coaching gig with the Boilermakers beginning with the 2023 season. Less than a month after seeing that tenure cut short, Walters now embarks on a new challenge in Seattle with the Huskies.

It is an intriguing move for the Boilermakers as well, as new head coach Barry Odom will lead Purdue into Husky Stadium on November 15th next season. That will mark the first time Purdue and Walters do battle since parting ways and the first time Odom and Walters will face off since the two worked together at Missouri.

After an extensive search, the Washington football team has announced the hiring of former Purdue head coach Ryan Walters as their new defensive coordinator. Walters brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the team, having previously coached at Purdue and served as the defensive coordinator at Missouri.

During his time at Purdue, Walters helped lead the defense to significant improvements and was instrumental in developing several players who went on to have successful NFL careers. His innovative defensive schemes and ability to develop players make him a valuable addition to the Washington coaching staff.

Fans are excited to see how Walters will bring his unique coaching style and strategic approach to the Washington defense. With his proven track record of success, there is no doubt that he will make an immediate impact and help lead the team to success in the upcoming season. Welcome to Washington, Coach Walters!

  • Bradley Carnell hired by Philadelphia Union as manager, succeeding Jim Curtin

Bradley Carnell hired by Philadelphia Union as manager, succeeding Jim Curtin

Nearly two months after firing Jim Curtin, and not long before this year’s preseason starts, the Union finally announced their new manager on Thursday.

Bradley Carnell, a 47-year-old South African with past experience at multiple MLS teams, is the new man in charge. He previously coached St. Louis City SC and the New York Red Bulls, and recently had a short stint as an assistant with Canada’s men’s national team.

Carnell is the fourth manager in the Union’s 16-year history, and notably the first to be hired from outside the organization since the club’s inaugural boss, Peter Nowak (2009-12). The two other men who held the role, John Hackworth (2012-14) and Curtin (2014-24), were promoted from assistant roles.

The Union had been pretty quiet since dismissing Curtin on Nov. 7. Other than the team’s end-of-year roster announcement, sporting director Ernst Tanner’s only moves have been re-signing longtime captain Alejandro Bedoya to another one-year deal, re-signing right back Olivier Mbaizo to a multiyear deal, trading a bunch of college draft picks, and acquiring Argentine centerback Ian Glavinovich on loan.

» READ MORE: MLS schedule release: Union begin season at Orlando; will host Lionel Messi and Inter Miami in May

There notably wasn’t much chatter about the manager job, with only two names making it into public view.

The first was German coach Thomas Letsch, who was well-known to Tanner from past connections in Europe. At one point, Letsch was seen as the frontrunner in some quarters, but in other quarters that view was disputed. He ended up taking a higher-profile job, Austria’s Red Bull Salzburg — coincidentally Tanner’s former home — in mid-December after the club fired its manager.

Carnell’s name started floating around as a potential candidate in early December, then faded away. It resurfaced in the middle of the month, then things went quiet again until Thursday.

“I’m honored to be named head coach of the Philadelphia Union, and I would like to thank the Union ownership group and Ernst Tanner for their trust in me,” Carnell said in a statement. “Philadelphia is an amazing city, built on communities of hardworking and passionate people who truly love their soccer. I am excited for this opportunity to build upon an already solid foundation and aim to help raise the Union organization to the next level that our fans and city can be proud of.”

It’s certainly fair to wonder what took so long. That question and others should come up when Tanner and Carnell hold a news conference at Subaru Park on Thursday afternoon.

Fans might also wonder if Carnell’s hiring is underwhelming, given the seeming possibility of hiring a foreign name like Letsch. But his resumé is worth reading.

After spending five years as a New York Red Bulls assistant (including an interim stint in charge in late 2020), Carnell was appointed St. Louis’ inaugural manager when the club launched in 2023. His team won the Western Conference regular-season title that year, a rare feat for an expansion team, with a 17-12-5 record and a fast-paced style of play.

» READ MORE: Jay Sugarman knows there’s a ‘tension’ in the Union’s approach, and knows his key role in solving it

The campaign crashed to a halt in the playoffs, as St. Louis was toppled by No. 8 seed Sporting Kansas City in the first round — an upset with added ignominy of a brewing in-state rivalry. Carnell got a vote of confidence after the season with a contract extension, but started 2024 with a 3-7-10 record and was fired at the end of June.

In September, Carnell spent a few games helping Canada manager Jesse Marsch, including a friendly against the United States. (Marsch, a close friend of Curtin for decades, surely has a few opinions about the Union’s moves.)

Tanner obviously expects Carnell to deliver the kind of playing style he authored in St. Louis, and to help shore up a defensive unit that gave up far too many bad goals last year. There’s also a clear expectation to give the Union’s major young prospects playing time, a point Tanner made in a statement with the hiring announcement. The main reason for suddenly dismissing Curtin after 10 years in charge was a disagreement over the big-picture philosophy for the coming season.

“Bradley has the attributes we were looking for in a manager and the experience needed as we commit to getting back to our identity as a team,” Tanner said. “His approach emphasizes a high-press style of play while organizing a structured defense. Additionally, he shares the club’s vision for developing players. We are confident he will bring a clear sporting philosophy that elevates the team and delivers a competitive season.”

That last part certainly matters after the Union failed to make the playoffs for the first time since 2017. If Carnell doesn’t win, he’ll be judged harshly — and so will Tanner for hiring him.

But how Carnell handles all those prospects will also matter. He’d better be able to get the most out of Cavan Sullivan before the teen phenom turns his focus to Manchester City, and do right by CJ Olney, Neil Pierre, and other youngsters on the cusp.

Expect that to be another major talking point Thursday afternoon.

» READ MORE: When a Union fan needed a life-saving kidney transplant, another Union fan he didn’t know stepped up

The Philadelphia Union have announced the hiring of Bradley Carnell as the new manager of the team, succeeding Jim Curtin. Carnell, a former South African international player and coach, brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Carnell previously served as an assistant coach for the New York Red Bulls and most recently as the interim head coach for the team. He has also worked with the Vancouver Whitecaps and the New England Revolution in various coaching roles.

The Philadelphia Union are confident that Carnell’s tactical knowledge, leadership skills, and passion for the game will help lead the team to success in the upcoming season. Fans are excited to see what Carnell will bring to the table and are hopeful for a successful tenure under his guidance.

Stay tuned for updates on the Philadelphia Union’s upcoming season under the new leadership of Bradley Carnell. #DOOP #WelcomeBradley
