  • Why asteroid 2024 YR4 is unlikely to hit Earth in 2032

Why asteroid 2024 YR4 is unlikely to hit Earth in 2032

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — The threat of a newly discovered asteroid has risen slightly in the past few weeks, as the world’s telescopes rush to track its course. But the chance of an impact is still quite slim.

New calculations suggest there’s a 2% chance the space rock 2024 YR4 will smack Earth in 2032. This also means there’s a 98% chance it will safely pass our planet. The odds of a strike will almost certainly continue to go up and down as the asteroid’s path around the sun is better understood, and astronomers said there’s a good chance the risk likely will drop to zero.

NASA and the European Space Agency’s Webb Space Telescope will observe this near-Earth asteroid in March before the object disappears from view. Once that happens, scientists will have to wait until 2028 when it passes our way again.

    What’s an asteroid?

Asteroids are space rocks orbiting the sun that are considerably smaller than planets. Scientists believe they’re the leftovers from the solar system’s formation 4.6 billion years ago.

There are so many asteroids orbiting between Mars and Jupiter — millions of them — that this region is known as the main asteroid belt. They sometimes get pushed out of the belt and can end up all over the place — like this one.

How do scientists track potentially dangerous asteroids?

A telescope in Chile discovered the asteroid 2024 YR4 in December. It’s estimated to be 130 feet to 300 feet (40 meters to 90 meters) across. Observations by the Webb telescope should provide a more precise measurement, according to NASA.

NASA and the European Space Agency initially put the odds of a strike at just over 1%. By Thursday, it had risen to roughly 2%. NASA describes that as still “extremely low.”

Until scientists have a better understanding of the asteroid’s path around the sun, they caution the odds will continue to fluctuate — and quite possibly fall to zero.

“You don’t have to be worried about anything. It’s a curiosity,” said Larry Denneau, senior software engineer with the University of Hawaii’s asteroid impact alert system that first spotted the asteroid. “Don’t panic. Let the process play out, and we’ll have a for-sure answer.”

In 2021, NASA gave the all-clear to another potentially worrisome asteroid, Apophis, after new telescope observations ruled out any chance of it hitting Earth in 2068.

Should we worry about asteroid 2024 YR4?

It’s way too soon to fret over this asteroid, according to the experts.

“No one should be concerned that the impact probability is rising. This is the behavior our team expected,” Paul Chodas, director of NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, said in an email. “To be clear, we expect the impact probability to drop to zero at some point.”

Since the asteroid’s size and orbit are uncertain, it’s unclear where it might hit and what the possible impacts would be should it strike Earth. If the asteroid is on the smaller end, ESA said any potential impacts would be local similar to the Tunguska event that flattened thousands of square miles of forest in remote Siberia in 1908. But if it’s close to 330 feet (100 meters), “the consequences would be significantly worse.”

Chodas said once Webb pinpoints the asteroid’s size, NASA can predict “how serious an impact this asteroid could produce and how difficult a task it might be to deflect this asteroid.”

NASA already has some experience nudging an asteroid. The space agency’s Dart spacecraft deliberately rammed a harmless asteroid in 2022 in the first planetary defense test of its kind, altering its orbit around its larger companion asteroid.

There has been recent speculation and concern about the asteroid 2024 YR4 potentially colliding with Earth in 2032. However, it is important to note that the chances of this happening are extremely low.

First and foremost, scientists have been closely monitoring the trajectory of 2024 YR4 and have determined that the asteroid poses no immediate threat to our planet. Its orbit has been well-mapped, and its path is not projected to intersect with Earth in the foreseeable future.

Additionally, the size of 2024 YR4 is relatively small in comparison to other potentially hazardous asteroids. While any asteroid impact is cause for concern, the impact of 2024 YR4, if it were to occur, would likely not be catastrophic on a global scale.

Furthermore, efforts are being made to further study and track the trajectory of 2024 YR4 in order to better understand its movements and any potential risks it may pose in the future. This ongoing research and observation will help to ensure the safety of our planet and prevent any potential collisions.

In conclusion, while the idea of an asteroid impact is certainly daunting, the likelihood of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting Earth in 2032 is very low. Scientists are diligently monitoring the situation and taking necessary precautions to ensure the safety of our planet.

  • Neil Gaiman Hit with Rape & Trafficking Lawsuits; Spouse Also Named

After months of horrific allegations of sexual misconduct, The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman has been taken to court in a trio of states on allegations of rape, human trafficking and more by a former New Zealand nanny of his and musician Amanda Palmer’s son.

“This claim arises out of Defendant Neil Gaiman’s sexual abuse of Plaintiff, and his wife Amanda Palmer’s role in procuring and presenting Plaintiff to Gaiman for such abuse,” states a rape and human trafficking complaint filed in federal court Monday in Wisconsin by Scarlett Pavlovich. “Gaiman has a decades-long history of sexual misconduct consistent with the actions that will be described in the following paragraphs,” the 28-page nine claim action adds, with vivid detail including a sodomy rape of “slave” Pavlovich by Gaiman just three years ago.

Seeking at least $1 million and a jury trial, the case’s details align with the deeply researched New York Magazine  “There Is No Safe Word”piece by Lila Shapiro from earlier this year and the allegations made by Pavlovich and seven different women against Gaiman. That New York Magazine article drew from Tortoise Media’s six-part podcast Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman from last summer.

In a January 14 blog post, after the Shapiro penned piece came out, Gaiman wrote: “As I reflect on my past – and as I re-review everything that actually happened as opposed to what is being alleged – I don’t accept there was any abuse. To repeat, I have never engaged in non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.”

Having said that, the no longer CAA-repped Gaiman recently has been dropped by his UK agent Casarotto Ramsay & Associates’ client list, as my colleague Jake Kanter exclusively reported last week. Additionally, Anansi Boys publisher Dark Horse Comics has dropped the once-acclaimed scribe, and a UK stage production of Coraline was canceled in the last days of January. As allegations against Gaiman grew, Season 3 of Amazon Prime Video‘s Good Omens was scaled back to a 90-minute episode and Disney paused production on its big screen adaptation of The Graveyard Book.

On January 31, Netflix revealed that the upcoming second season of the much viewed The Sandman will be the last, with a proposed Season 3 now DOA.

Dresden Dolls co-founder Palmer, who separated from Gaiman during the pandemic and her and their son’s lockdown in New Zealand, and said in November 2022 that the couple were divorcing after more than a decade of marriage. To that, Palmer posted this on her usually active Instagram page three weeks ago as the allegations against the Good Omens showrunner intensified:

Along with the midwestern state, where American Gods author and TV series EP Gaiman has a home, filings were submitted in New York, and Massachusetts by Pavlovich’s NYC-based Kamerman Uncyk Soniker & Klein P.C. lawyers with Palmer as the defendant.

Pavlovich and her attorneys claim that Palmer knew how vulnerable the plaintiff was mentally and economically and essentially led her into the lion’s den.

“Palmer was sufficiently aware that Gaiman was likely to target Scarlett, that she warned Gaiman to stay away from Scarlett before she brought Scarlett to Gaiman’s house as a babysitter,” the Empire State and New England state filings declare of the initial encounters with the openly open marriage Gaimans in the southwestern Pacific Ocean country and the early 2022 job offer. “Yet Palmer never warned Scarlett of the known danger posed by Gaiman. Had Palmer warned Scarlett of the known danger posed by Gaiman, Scarlett would never have agreed to babysit Palmer’s child at Gaiman’s house.”

In that context, the reasoning behind the multi-state filing is all about residency.

“Upon information and belief, jurisdiction over Palmer is appropriate in either New York or Massachusetts, and Palmer may consent to jurisdiction in Wisconsin. Given the uncertainty regarding Palmer’s state of residence, Plaintiff is simultaneously filing actions against Palmer in the United States District Courts for the Southern District of New York and the District of Massachusetts and will proceed against Palmer only in the district of her choosing.”

Full disclosure: New York Magazine is owned by Vox Media, which Deadline’s parent company PMC has had an ownership stake in since 2023.

In shocking news, acclaimed author Neil Gaiman has been hit with rape and trafficking lawsuits, with his spouse also named in the legal action. The allegations against Gaiman have sent shockwaves through the literary world, as fans grapple with the disturbing accusations against the beloved writer.

The details of the lawsuits have not been made public, but the claims against Gaiman and his spouse are sure to have far-reaching consequences for their careers and reputations. As more information comes to light, the full extent of the allegations and their impact on Gaiman’s work and legacy remains to be seen.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • There’s a small chance an asteroid could hit Earth within the next decade, says NASA

A large asteroid could pass close enough to Earth within the next decade that there’s a chance it could strike the planet, according to NASA.

The space rock, named 2024 YR4, is between 130 feet and 330 feet in diameter and could hit Earth in 2032, according to NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies.

But that likelihood is low, with just a 1.3% chance that the asteroid could make direct impact on the planet on Dec. 22, 2032, according to space experts.

Astronomers monitoring the ATLAS telescope at the University of Hawaii first spotted the asteroid as it was moving away from Earth on Dec. 27 and reported it to the International Astronomical Union Minor Planet Center, which determined it had never before been seen, Kelly Fast, a planetary defense officer at NASA, told ABC News.

    PHOTO: Giant Asteroid Vesta

South polar region of the giant asteroid Vesta.

    Nasa/jPL-Caltech/Getty Images

Asteroid 2024 YR4 has an “interesting” orbit, Fast said. The elongated path takes the asteroid around the sun and into Earth’s vicinity before it ventures far out between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, she said.

“In the past, even though it’s passed through the inner solar system before, it didn’t always pass by where the Earth happened to be, where it could be picked up easily,” Fast said, explaining why the asteroid was only recently discovered.

Because of its unique orbit, astronomers are trying to learn everything they can about 2024 YR4 before it disappears out of sight after April, Fast said. It’s not expected to be visible again until 2028.

The end of 2032 is when astronomers predict 2024 YR will come close to Earth again, Fast said, adding that further observations are expected to provide data to support the likelihood that 2024 YR4 will avoid hitting Earth.

“The worldwide community is continuing to take observations,” Fast said. “it can’t all happen in a day, because the asteroid has to keep moving in the sky.”

The Large Binocular Telescope Interferometer, or LBTI, is a ground-based instrument connecting two 8-meter class telescopes on Mount Graham in Arizona to form the largest single-mount telescope in the world.

    NASA

Astronomers estimate the size of asteroids based on how much light they reflect. Based on current data, 2024 YR is large enough for it to potentially cause localized damage were it to strike a populated city, Fast said.

In 1908, the Tunguska asteroid, which was a similar size, flattened trees over an area of about 1,250 miles after it exploded in the skies over Siberia.

Congress has tasked NASA with locating asteroids larger than 450 feet in length – large enough to potentially do “regional” damage were it to strike the planet, Fast said.

Smaller asteroids, within a few yards in diameter, tend to be disintegrated by Earth’s atmosphere and transformed into fireballs, Fast said.

NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) Asteroid Watch tracks asteroids and comets that will make relatively close approaches to Earth. Five asteroids are forecast to pass near Earth in the coming days.

    Asteroid Psyche (Illustration).

    NASA

On Friday, two asteroids are expected to pass near Earth, according to the updated list. Asteroid 2025 BR2, with JPL describes as an “airplane-size” space rock about 67 feet long, is expected to pass within 3.21 million miles of Earth, while another asteroid, 2015 DJ155 – two-and-a-half times as large, at 170 feet – is expected to pass within 4.42 million miles of Earth.

Two more asteroids, 2025 BG4 and 2025 BR7 – 75 and 100 feet in length, respectively – are forecast to pass within 3.09 million miles and 3.58 million miles of Earth, respectively, also on Friday.

On Sunday, 2025 BU, which JPL describe as being about the size of a house, at around 54 feet in length, is predicted to pass within 2.1 million miles of Earth, according to Asteroid Watch.

Fast emphasized that although these asteroids are passing “relatively” close to Earth, they’re still a great distance away. The moon itself is fewer than 240,000 miles from Earth and there are often asteroids passing Earth within that distance, she said.

“Space is big, and so that’s very far away,” Fast said.

NASA has revealed that there is a small chance an asteroid could potentially hit Earth within the next decade. While the probability is low, it serves as a reminder of the importance of monitoring near-Earth objects and being prepared for any potential impact.

According to NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies, there are currently no known asteroids on a collision course with Earth in the next decade. However, they continue to track and monitor asteroids to ensure the safety of our planet.

In the event that an asteroid is detected on a collision course with Earth, NASA has plans in place to mitigate the impact, including possible deflection missions. This highlights the importance of investing in asteroid detection and deflection technologies to protect our planet from potential threats.

While the likelihood of an asteroid impact is small, it is crucial to remain vigilant and prepared for any potential scenario. NASA’s continued efforts in monitoring near-Earth objects serve as a reminder of the importance of planetary defense and the need for international cooperation in safeguarding our planet.

American hit comedy One Of Them Days, starring SZA and Keke Palmer, has secured a release date in the UK.

According to a press release from distributor Sony Pictures UK, the film will be released in cinemas on March 7, following a positive reception upon its release in the States. It will debut the same weekend as Bong Joon-ho’s sci-fi Mickey 17, starring Robert Pattinson.

The official synopsis reads: “Best friends and roommates Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are about to have One of Them Days. When they discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a comical race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact”. The movie co-stars comedian Katt Williams and Euphoria’s Maude Apatow.

The comedy, the first R-rated female Black comedy to hit cinemas since 2017’s Girl Trip, was a surprise hit recently in the US. It beat horror film Wolf Man to finish second in the box office chart, just behind Mufasa: The Lion King. It also currently stands at a 95 per cent “fresh” critics rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.

  • Trump says Canada and Mexico to be hit with 25% tariffs on Saturday

US President Donald Trump has said he will follow through with his threat to hit imports from Canada and Mexico with 25% border taxes, known as tariffs, on 1 February.

But he added that a decision about whether this would include oil from those countries had not yet been made.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the move was aimed to address the large amounts of undocumented migrants and the fentanyl that come across US borders as well as trade deficits with its neighbours.

The president also suggested that he was still planning to impose new tariffs on China, which he said earlier this month would be 10%, but did not give any details.

“With China, I’m also thinking about something because they’re sending fentanyl into our country, and because of that, they’re causing us hundreds of thousands of deaths,” Trump said.

“So China is going to end up paying a tariff also for that, and we’re in the process of doing that.”

During the election campaign, Trump threatened to hit Chinese-made products with tariffs of up to 60%, but held off on any immediate action on his first day back in the White House, instead ordering his administration to study the issue.

US goods imports from China have flattened since 2018, a statistic that economists have attributed in part to a series of escalating tariffs that Trump imposed during his first term.

Earlier this month, a top Chinese official warned against protectionism as Trump’s return to the presidency renews the threat of a trade war between the world’s two biggest economies – but did not mention the US by name.

Addressing the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Ding Xuexiang, Vice Premier of China, said his country was looking for a “win-win” solution to trade tensions and wanted to expand its imports.

Canada and Mexico have said that they would respond to US tariffs with measures of their own, while also seeking to assure Washington that they were taking action to address concerns about their US borders.

If US imports of oil from Canada and Mexico are hit with levies it risks undermining Trump’s promise to bring down the cost of living.

Tariffs are an import tax on goods that are produced abroad.

In theory, taxing items coming into a country means people are less likely to buy them as they become more expensive.

The intention is that they buy cheaper local products instead – boosting a country’s economy.

But the cost of tariffs on imported energy could be passed on to businesses and consumers, which may increase the prices of everything from petrol to groceries.

Around 40% of the crude that runs through US oil refineries is imported, and the vast majority of it comes from Canada.

In a shocking turn of events, President Trump announced today that Canada and Mexico will be hit with 25% tariffs starting this Saturday. This decision comes amidst ongoing trade disputes between the United States and its neighboring countries.

The tariffs, which will affect a wide range of products including steel, aluminum, and agricultural goods, are expected to have a significant impact on the economies of both Canada and Mexico. Many are concerned about the potential repercussions of this move, including rising prices for consumers and strained diplomatic relations.

President Trump has been vocal about his desire to renegotiate trade deals with both countries, and these tariffs are seen as a way to pressure them into making concessions. It remains to be seen how Canada and Mexico will respond to this latest development, but one thing is certain – the trade war between the United States and its neighbors is far from over. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
