Alabama DB coach Colin Hitschler not expected to return in 2025
Alabama co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler is not expected to return for a second season with the Crimson Tide in 2025, BamaOnLine has learned.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the news.
Hitschler joined Kalen DeBoer’s first coaching staff at Alabama in January, and he coached the Crimson Tide’s safeties during the 2024 campaign. UA’s Game 1 starters, Malachi Moore and Keon Sabb, both suffered injuries and were not able to finish the season, while three players in the room transferred – DeVonta Smith, Tony Mitchell and Peyton Woodyard.
Hitschler coached from the booth in his first and only year at Alabama, which helped defensive coordinator Kane Wommack while making the calls from the Crimson Tide’s sideline.
“Probably the best gameday mind adjustment-wise that I’ve been around,” Wommack said this season. “He sees things up in the box, does a great job of being kind of my eyes and ears up there from a communication standpoint on gameday.
“I’ve been around some really special defensive coaches over the years, and he’s probably at the top of the list in terms of his ability to create value as a defensive staff on gameday. He is somebody I certainly lean on and rely on up there.”
Hitschler arrived at Alabama after spending the 2023 season in the same roles at Wisconsin. He followed Luke Fickell from Cincinnati, where he spent five years. Prior to that, Hitschler worked at South Alabama from 2014-17 and ended his tenure in Mobile, Alabama by coaching safeties on Wommack’s coaching staff. His first FBS coaching job was as a grad assistant at Arkansas State in 2013. Hitschler’s first job was with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009.
With Hitschler moving on, Alabama is expected to promote Chuck Morrell to linebackers coach. Wommack is now likely to oversee the entire defense, while Alabama co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist will coach the entire Tide secondary.

Alabama defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler is not expected to return to the Crimson Tide coaching staff for the 2025 season. Hitschler, who has been with the program since 2019, has reportedly decided to pursue other opportunities in the coaching world.Hitschler’s departure comes as a surprise to many, as he has been instrumental in developing some of the top defensive backs in the country during his time at Alabama. His departure leaves a significant void in the coaching staff, as his expertise and mentorship will be sorely missed.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban is expected to begin the search for Hitschler’s replacement in the coming weeks. Whoever takes over the role will have big shoes to fill, as Hitschler leaves behind a legacy of success and excellence in developing defensive backs.
Fans of the Crimson Tide will undoubtedly miss Hitschler’s presence on the sidelines, but they can take solace in knowing that he will continue to make a positive impact wherever he goes next in his coaching career.

Report: Alabama co-defensive coordinator, DB coach Colin Hitschler will not return in 2025
Alabama co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler will not return to the Crimson Tide next year, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“Sources: Alabama co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler has been informed he will not return to the Crimson Tide next year,” Thamel reported, via X. “He has a year remaining on his initial two-year contract.”
The 38-year old defensive coach was hired by Kalen DeBoer after spending 2023 with the Wisconsin Badgers. Prior, Hitschler spent multiple seasons with the Cincinnati Bearcats, and the South Alabama Jaguars.
Evidently, DeBoer was far from pleased with the way the Alabama defense played during his inaugural season in Tuscaloosa. A number of SEC opponents played some impressive offense against a historically staunch Crimson Tide defensive unit, from Georgia almost completing a historic comeback and falling just a short, to Vanderbilt’s massive upset victory in which they dropped 40 on Alabama’s head.
In addition to Hitschler, Alabama has employed Kane Wommack as their defensive coordinator over the past season. At the moment, he figure to return for DeBoer and company, but Hitschler will be moving on from the Crimson Tide.
All told, the way Alabama finished out the 2024 campaign has left a bad taste in the mouth of all Crimson Tide fans. The program seemed destined for the College Football Playoff, but a loss to Oklahoma on the road by 21 points threw a wrench into everything. They still had a shot after defeating Auburn in the Iron Bowl, but Clemson knocked the Crimson Tide to the curb by winning the ACC title, and SMU being chosen over DeBoer’s squad.
Then, Alabama suffered a shocking loss to the Michigan Wolverines by a score of 19-13 in the ReliaQuest Bowl. They raced out to a 16-0 lead, shell-shocking the Crimson Tide and never looked back. It was a chance to end their campaign on a high note, and Alabama squandered it once again.
Moving forward, more is going to be expected of Kalen DeBoer and the Alabama Crimson Tide. Colin Hitschler just won’t be there to see it through next season.
According to reports, Alabama co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler will not be returning to the Crimson Tide coaching staff for the 2025 season.Hitschler, who joined Alabama in 2020 as a defensive analyst before being promoted to his current role in 2022, has played a key role in developing the Tide’s secondary and defensive schemes over the past few years.
It is unclear at this time what led to Hitschler’s departure or where he may be headed next. Alabama head coach Nick Saban has not yet made any official announcements regarding changes to his coaching staff for the upcoming season.
Hitschler’s departure leaves a significant hole in Alabama’s coaching staff, as he was highly regarded for his coaching acumen and ability to develop talented defensive backs. It will be interesting to see who Saban brings in to fill Hitschler’s shoes and continue the Tide’s tradition of defensive dominance.

Alabama Co-DBs Coach Colin Hitschler Informed He Will Not Return Next Season
Alabama co-defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler will not be part of the Crimson Tide’s coaching staff for the 2025 season, per ESPN’s Pete Thamel.
“Sources: Alabama co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Colin Hitschler has been informed he will not return to the Crimson Tide next year,” Thamel wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday morning. “He has a year remaining on his initial two-year contract.”
Hitschler was hired this past offseason alongside many new assistants for Year 1 of the Kalen DeBoer regime. He primarily worked with the Crimson Tide safeties while fellow co-defensive backs coach Maurice Linguist focused on the Alabama cornerbacks.
Hitschler is the first Alabama assistant to move on from the team this offseason.
Hitschler, 38, spent the 2023 season at Wisconsin under Luke Fickell after working for him at Cincinnati from 2018 to 2022, working his way up from a defensive analyst to co-defensive coordinator. Alabama faced Hitschler’s defense in the 2021 College Football Playoff. That season, the Bearcats ranked fifth nationally in scoring defense (16.5) and No. 10 in total defense (318.4 yards per game).
He worked with new Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack at South Alabama from 2016-2017. He also began as a defensive analyst with the Jaguars before eventually being promoted to safeties coach.
Hitschler began his coaching career in the NFL as a training camp assistant for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009 before moving on to working for the Kansas City Chiefs in player personnel in 2010.

Alabama Co-DBs Coach Colin Hitschler Informed He Will Not Return Next SeasonAfter two seasons coaching the defensive backs at the University of Alabama, Colin Hitschler has been informed that he will not be returning next season. Hitschler, who joined the Crimson Tide coaching staff in 2019, helped lead the team to a national championship in his first year with the program.
Hitschler’s departure comes as a surprise to many, as the Alabama defense has been one of the best in the country under his guidance. However, head coach Nick Saban has decided to make a change in the coaching staff in hopes of continuing the team’s success on the field.
Hitschler has not yet announced his plans for the future, but he is sure to be in high demand among other college football programs looking to bolster their defensive coaching staff. Alabama fans will surely miss Hitschler’s presence on the sidelines, but they wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors.
