Hoffenheim arrived in Belgium for their final league stage match in the Europa League at Anderlecht on Thursday amid a major injury and illness crisis, and with only little hope of reaching the last 16 play-offs.
Coach Christian Ilzer is without 13 players led by goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. In addition, newly signed Gift Orban and Erencan Yardimci are eligible to play.
“It is a sickbay like I’ve never experienced before in my coaching career,” Ilzer told reporters on Wednesday.
Ilzer did not want to reveal who will not be able to play because he wants “to keep our opponent in the dark.”
But Buamann’s absence is definite and he is set to be replaced by Luca Philipp, like in Sunday’s 2-2 Bundesliga draw with Eintracht Frankfurt.
Hoffenheim are 28th. In order to make the top 24 for a play-off spot they need to win and have other results go their way as well. Anderlecht are seventh and well-placed to qualify directly for the last 16, for which a top eight spot is necessary.
“We haven’t brought along the calculator. I got a WhatsApp message today with all sorts of things that need to happen,” Ilzer said.
“But we don’t need to do the maths, we need to make sure we put in our best possible performance. The basis for progressing is a victory.”
Hoffenheim, a team hit hard by injuries and departures, face a tough challenge in their bid to advance in the Europa League. With a depleted squad, they will have to overcome the odds to secure a spot in the next round.Injuries to key players have left Hoffenheim struggling to field a strong starting lineup, and the recent departure of some of their top talents has further weakened their squad. Despite these setbacks, the team is determined to fight for a place in the knockout stages of the competition.
Their next match will be crucial, as they face a formidable opponent who will not make it easy for them. Hoffenheim will need to dig deep and show resilience in order to secure a positive result and keep their Europa League hopes alive.
With their backs against the wall, Hoffenheim will have to summon all their strength and determination to overcome this challenge. It will be a tough battle, but if they can rise to the occasion, they may still have a chance to advance in the Europa League.

Christian Ilzer has just announced his team to take on the Belgian club. With veteran goalkeeper Oliver Baumann injured, Luca Philipp gets another chance to deputise between the posts.
Ilzer resorts to his preferred three-man defence with Arthur Chaves playing alongside Robin Hanrac and Kevin Akpoguma.
Moving into the middle third and 20-year-old David Mokwa starts on the right flank with David Jurasek on the left. The central midfield trio is comprised of Tom Bischof, skipper Denis Geiger and Finn-Ole Becker.
The two-man strike force is comprised of Adam Hlozek and Max Moerstedt who will require goals and some favourable results in other fixtures if Hoffenheim are hoping to sneak inside the top-24 qualifying places.
Meanwhile, Anderlecht head coach Roel Clement lines up with a 4-3-3 formation captained by Yari Verschaeren in midfield. The Belgian club also boast a handful of former Bundesliga players including ex-Bremen full-bavk Ludwig Augustinsson and ex-BVB winger Thorgan Hazard.
Official lineups below:
Anderlecht (4-3-3): Kikkenborg – Sardella, Dendoncker, Simic, Augustinsson – Verschaeren (c), Rita, De Greel – Amuzu, Vázquez, Hazard.

#RSC #Anderlecht #TSG #HoffenheimPreview: Anderlecht vs. Hoffenheim – prediction, team news, lineups
Sports Mole previews Thursday’s Europa League clash between Anderlecht and Hoffenheim, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.
Belgian side Anderlecht will hope to confirm their automatic qualification for the Europa League round of 16 when they host Hoffenheim at Lotto Park on Thursday.
The home team are seventh with 14 points and a win on Thursday would secure automatic progression, whereas the visitors’ 3-2 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur on January 23 left them 28th with six points and on the brink of elimination given they are three points and four places from the round of 16 playoffs.
Match preview

Anderlecht were beaten 2-0 by Viktoria Plzen last Thursday, a game in which they created no big chances, faced four and conceded in the third minute of the first half.
The hosts occupy one of eight automatic qualifications spots but could be caught by six of the first seven teams outside the top eight.
Manager David Hubert‘s side are fourth in the Belgian top flight with 39 points after 23 matchweeks, and they currently occupy one of six championship playoff spots.
The Purple and White have won five of their last seven games in all competitions – losing two – and have in fact only been beaten in one of their past 11 matches in the Europa League, winning six in that time.
Hubert’s team boast a strong record at home given they have achieved victory in nine of their 12 most recent outings at Lotto Park and are also unbeaten in their last six games at home in the Europa League.

Opponents Hoffenheim created enough chances to win against Tottenham considering they produced over 2.5 xG and six big chances, but their defence proved to be their undoing once again.
The Bundesliga club have conceded 11 times in their past four fixtures and 37 goals in the league, with only the bottom three in the German top flight posting a worse defensive record so far.
Head coach Christian Ilzer‘s side are three points from the teams ranked 24th to 21st in the Europa League table, and they also have the joint worst goal difference of the teams ranked 28th or above.
Hoffenheim have won one and drawn one of their last three games in all competitions, but they were winless in their prior nine matches – succumbing to defeat six times – and have only triumphed in one of their past nine Europa League fixtures.
Ilzer will be alarmed by his side’s performances on the road this season, as while the beat Holstein Kiel 3-1 on January 18 in their most recent away game, they lost seven and drew five of their previous 12 away matches.

Team News

Anderlecht will head into their clash without goalkeeper Colin Coosemans, while centre-back Jan Vertonghen is a doubt.
Those injuries could mean shot-stopper Mads Juhl Kikkenborg will be shielded by a back three of Jan-Carlo Simic, Leander Dendoncker and Ludwig Augustinsson.
Midfielders Mats Rits and Theo Leoni are likely to start in midfield given Majeed Ashimeru is a doubt.
Forward Kasper Dolberg and Samuel Edozie have been ruled out, so perhaps Tristan Degreef and Nilson Angulo will flank striker Luis Vazquez.
Meanwhile, it is difficult to predict what XI Hoffenheim will play on Thursday given their extensive injury list which includes centre-backs Christopher Lenz and Ozan Kabak, as well as goalkeeper Oliver Baumann.
Luca Philipp is almost certain to start in goal, and he may be protected by centre-backs Arthur Chaves and Kevin Akpoguma.
Midfielder Anton Stach has been a regular in the XI, and he could be partnered by Finn Ole Becker, especially as the likes of Diadie Samassekou and Grischa Promel will not be in the matchday squad.
Andrej Kramaric is likely to feature in the forward line alongside attackers Max Moerstedt, Tom Bischof and Adam Hlozek considering Ihlas Bebou and Haris Tabakovic are unavailable.
Anderlecht possible starting lineup:
Kikkenborg; Simic, Dendoncker, Augustinsson; Foket, Rits, Leoni, Maamar; Degreef, Vazquez, AnguloHoffenheim possible starting lineup:
Philipp; Gendrey, Chaves, Akpoguma, Prass; Stach, Becker; Hlozek, Bischof, Moerstedt; Kramaric
We say: Anderlecht 2-1 Hoffenheim
Anderlecht should be considered strong favourites considering their strong record at home, as well as the fact the visitors are in the midst of an injury crisis.
Hoffenheim may be forced to attack aggressively given they must win if they are to have a chance of reaching the round of 16, and if they were to do so, they may leave space in behind their defensive line for the hosts to exploit.

Hoffenheim 2 – 3 Tottenham
Tottenham Hotspur catapulted themselves into the top eight of the Europa League standings after holding off Hoffenheim to win 3-2 away from home.
Ange Postecoglou’s side were floundering in ninth heading into Thursday’s fixture but are now poised to avoid the two-legged playoffs to reach the round of 16 after moving up into sixth.
Tottenham play their final game of the league-phase at home against Elfsborg on January 30, while holding a one-point advantage on the teams looking to progress automatically, with Postecoglou stating it is a “great position to be in” after the game.
“It gives us a great chance of getting one of those top-eight spots, which would give us a week off – that’s almost as good as getting through,” he told TNT Sport.
“It’s a great position for us to be in – we want to finish in the top-eight because it gives us the extra week of respite from the schedule we had.
“We’re probably going to need it around that time, so it’s a great incentive.”
James Maddison’s stunning effort in the third minute and Heung-Min Son’s deflected shot 20 minutes later gave Tottenham control of the fixture but it was a tale of two halves as Hoffenheim came forward in waves after the restart.
The pressure looked as if it would pay off after Brandon Austin was adjudged to have fouled Max Moerstedt in the penalty area, only for VAR to overturn the decision, but the breakthrough would arrive just seconds later.
Anton Stach poked the ball into the back of the net – with hopes of a comeback high – until it was quickly met by Son wrapping his second effort on the evening into the far corner.
However, in traditional Tottenham fashion, there was later-than-late drama.
David Mokwa Ntusu’s header moments after climbing off the bench teed up a tantalising finish in Germany with the hosts pushing Tottenham, who had replaced the experienced heads of Son and Maddison with teenagers Callum Olusesi and Will Lankshear, until the very end.
Tottenham held on by the finest of margins and now snap their run of three games without a win in Europe but their makeshift defence, which included Archie Gray at left-back, were made to work for it.
Postecoglou: Winning in Europe isn’t easy – ask Man City!
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou speaking to TNT Sport:
“It’s not easy to get away wins in Europe – I watched the Champions League last night and there was only one away victory, so it’s tough.
“Credit to the boys. I thought it was an outstanding first half, played really well. We looked a bit tired in the second half but we hung on and Sonny scored that extra goal to give us that extra buffer.
“We had the schoolboys out there in the end and it was a great victory.”
Postecoglou looking to block out the ‘noise’
Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou:
“I’ve been doing this for a long time now and what’s important is that you have a really strong belief in what you’re doing and not get influenced by noise. Not getting influenced by what the current mood is in terms of people’s assessment of where you’re at.
“For me, that’s always been the most important thing. I firmly believe in what we’re doing. I firmly believe that we’re on the right road. Whether others agree with that is irrelevant to me.
“It doesn’t affect my decision-making or my interaction with the people at the club and particularly the players and staff.
“They’re my focus and they’re who I need to make sure that they have the belief. If they still have the belief then I know we can achieve success.
“It’s not easy to be fair because there’s a lot of noise. In the Premier League there’s the most noise so you have to deal with that but in the end it’s just noise.”
Who would Tottenham play currently?
Tottenham currently occupy sixth place and a win against Elfsborg in their final game will guarantee them a top-eight finish to go straight into the round of 16.
If Spurs were to remain in their current position, they would face the winners of the play-off match involving teams in 11th, 12th, 21st and 22nd.
The teams currently in those positions going into the final round of the league stage are Viktoria Plzen (11th), Olympiacos (12th), Roma (21st) and Ferencvaros (22nd).
Senior stars boost Spurs’ hopes of big break
Sky Sports’ Ali Stafford:
When you’ve got 14 players out injured and your star striker is facing a further six weeks on the sidelines, any opportunity to reduce your fixture schedule – in an already busy calendar – is always welcome.
Back-to-back draws in the Europa League had increased the possibility of Tottenham slipping out of the top eight, which would leave a two-legged knockout-phase play-off, but that victory now puts automatic qualification to the last 16 firmly in their own hands.
Ange Postecoglou praised how his senior players ‘stood up’ to support an inexperienced team to a vital three points, with Heung-Min Son leading by example with a valuable brace after James Maddison opened the scoring.
The second-half fatigue was visible and twice offered hope to a Hoffenheim side that should have already been well beaten, but Tottenham nervously held on in the closing minutes to register just a third win in nine across all competitions.
Three points against Elfsborg next Thursday will guarantee that top-eight spot and save two extra matches in February, while the win gives Postecoglou’s threadbare squad confidence going into Sunday’s Premier League match against relegation-threatened Leicester City.
When is the Europa League knockout stage?
Knockout play-offs: February 13 and February 20, 2025
Round of 16: March 6 and March 13, 2025
Quarter-finals: April 10 and April 17, 2025
Semi-finals: May 1 and May 8, 2025
Final: May 21, 2025Story of the match in stats
What’s coming up in the Europa League?
In a thrilling match, Tottenham Hotspur secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Hoffenheim. The game was packed with excitement and drama, with both teams giving their all on the pitch.Tottenham took the lead early on with a goal from Harry Kane, but Hoffenheim quickly responded with two goals of their own to take the lead. However, Spurs rallied in the second half, with goals from Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura sealing the victory.
It was a crucial win for Tottenham, as they look to secure their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League. The team showed great determination and resilience to come from behind and claim the three points.

Hoffenheim vs. Tottenham Hotspur: Europa League game time, live blog, and how to watch online
It’s only January, but European football is kicking off already thanks to this lovely new European format which while exciting, is taking its toll on footballers’ health. Speaking of which: Tottenham Hotspur now have to scrape together some semblance of a squad to take to Germany.
Spurs’ opponents are Hoffenheim, and they are in a similar position to the Lilywhites: in freefall down the league table, starting to flirt with the relegation zone, and nursing a number of injuries through their squad.
That said, no matter the opponent it feels like just getting through a match with 11 fit players still on the pitch is a mountain to climb right now for Spurs; and winning said match an Everest. Ange Postecoglou’s side need to find some ways to get wins under the belt, though, and fast. This match represents a golden opportunity.
