LinkedIn Founder Reid Hoffman sees bright AI future and hopes his tech peers are right about Trump
LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman has been immersed in Silicon Valley since his August 1967 birth in Palo Alto, California, in the shadow of Stanford University, where he and fellow technology luminary Peter Thiel became friends as college students during the 1980s.
They went on to start PayPal during the late 1990s while working alongside a coterie of other bright-eyed entrepreneurs who went on to even bigger things, just as Hoffman did. That group — dubbed the “PayPal Mafia” — included Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman, and YouTube co-founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen.
Now worth an estimated $2.6 billion, Hoffman has been at the forefront of the artificial intelligence craze while investing in trailblazing startups such as ChatGPT maker OpenAI and Inflection. Unlike other prominent technologists who are worried about AI destroying humanity, Hoffman has co-written a new book called “Superagency” that makes an optimistic case for AI. He recently talked with The Associated Press.
Q: Are humans creating something smarter than themselves with AI?
A: You already have some version of superintelligence right now. Obviously, we will be increasing that superintelligence, so we need to be thinking about which ways it’s going to be making great additions and which ways it’s going to make things more challenging.
Humans are generally bad at transitions, and that is part of the reason for writing books like “Superagency,” to try to say there are some positive design principles, some positive outcomes that we should be trying to work our way toward.
Q: Do you think there is a chance that these superintelligent AI agents eventually may seem omniscient?
A: AI agents are pretty useful for coaching and advising. Like if you were to say, “Hey, how should I approach this thorny problem?” An AI agent can be a pretty good advice-giving coach. And so you can imagine it being a useful tutor across a wide variety of subjects, including even spiritual or counseling or mental ones. And I think that could be positive for the evolution of humanity, having something talking to us that is infinitely patient and is trying to help us get to our better selves. So, yes, you could have a “Consult the Oracle” situation with AI agents.
Q: What’s the risk of some people embracing AI as a bosom buddy and becoming more socially isolated?
A: Some of that will happen for sure, the same way some people isolated themselves with TV or the internet. Part of this will be about the design focus. If you go to Inflection’s AI agent, Pi, and say, “Hey you’re my best friend,” Pi, will say, “No, I am your AI companion, let’s talk about your friendships. Have you seen any of your friends recently or want to see them?” We want AI agents being softly and gently encouraging, to be tied into the human circumstance, which I think is what most people really want.
Q: On the flip side, as these AI agents become more human-like, could that get people more in touch with their own humanity?
A: Our humanity is expressed in how we incorporate technology in our lives, just as we are communicating through Zoom for this interview. I think that is part of our humanity.
Q: Switching topics, are you worried about President Trump retaliating against you for being one of Kamala Harris’ biggest supporters in Silicon Valley leading up to last year’s election?
2024 obviously was a very intense year and what I am trying not to do is speculate too much about that because in 2025 I am going to really focus on how I build and fund really interesting AI companies and other areas that help build industries that make a difference. My obvious hope is that the incoming administration will turn to a positive agenda. I kind of feel at this point that speculation is not really helpful. We will see in a couple of months how it’s all going to play out.
Q: Were you surprised by how much support President Trump got from other technology billionaires like Elon Musk and Marc Andreessen?
A: It wasn’t surprising that the people who were very intensely pro-cryptocurrency were pro-Trump because the Biden administration was so negative on crypto. Also the fact that the Biden administration — unlike the Obama administration — was not putting in a lot of energy into saying, “Hey we think that new technology and new technology companies of the future are really important.” And I think a bunch of the Biden administration staff was somewhat negative on large, tech companies.
What did surprise me — and now I am very much hoping they are right — is that they thought the Trump administration would be very strongly and thoughtfully pro business across the arena. Let’s see what happens with tariffs, let’s hope that it doesn’t play out in a particularly challenging way.
A: Do you think your old PayPal colleagues Peter Thiel and Elon Musk are playing a form of political chess?
The thing that is so important about Silicon Valley is the broadly held belief — even if it’s manifested differently in Peter versus me or other people, — is that the creation of new technology companies is how progress is made. And I think it’s an important mission for the country and the world as well as Silicon Valley. The degree to which they are playing chess around that, I don’t know. But I think they are driven on that mission and part of what they are doing is trying to make sure that mission is fully realized in the Trump administration.
Q: Do you agree with Trump’s supporters in Silicon Valley that it’s time to ease up on the rigorous regulation of tech that we had during President Biden’s administration?
A: I do. I hope there will be much more enablement of technology innovation.
Q: Going back to your book, what do you say about AI pioneers like Nobel Prize winner Geoffrey Hinton who now see the technology as a threat to humanity?
A: I tend to rate a lot of risks based on how does it compare to my risk to driving to the airport because every time you get in a car and drive to the airport, the highest risk of the journey is on the drive and not on the plane. If the risk is in the automobile-level of percentage, then I don’t worry about it that much. And, if you say, “Well this is much bigger, this could be an existential human risk.” Then I say, “Well, yeah, that’s part of the reason you put more energy into being protective in navigating and steering it.”
LinkedIn Founder Reid Hoffman recently shared his optimistic views on the future of artificial intelligence (AI) and expressed hope that his fellow tech industry leaders are right about President Donald Trump. In a recent interview, Hoffman discussed the potential of AI to revolutionize industries and improve efficiency in various sectors. He emphasized the importance of ethical AI development and the need for responsible implementation of this technology.
Additionally, Hoffman expressed hope that his tech peers are correct in their assessment of President Trump and his administration. Many tech leaders have been critical of Trump’s policies and rhetoric, particularly on issues such as immigration and climate change. However, some have also expressed optimism about the potential for collaboration with the government on areas of mutual interest, such as infrastructure and job creation.
Hoffman’s positive outlook on both AI and the potential for cooperation with the Trump administration reflects his belief in the power of technology to drive positive change. As a prominent figure in the tech industry, his perspectives carry weight and influence, and his optimism is a hopeful sign for the future of innovation and progress.

Reid Hoffman raises $25 million to take on cancer with AI
In This Story
LinkedIn (MSFT+2.86%) co-founder and venture capitalist Reid Hoffman on Monday launched an AI startup aimed at discovering new treatments for cancer.
Manas AI will use a proprietary AI-driven platform to help speed up the drug discovery process, from identifying potential drug candidates with “paradigm-shifting speed and accuracy” all the way to clinical trials, Hoffman said in a press release. The company is initially focusing on treatments for breast cancer, prostate cancer, and lymphoma. Eventually, it intends to target other autoimmune diseases and rare conditions.
“AI will have a lasting and positive impact on humanity, and for years I have been focused on helping realize the potential of this technology,” Hoffman said. “Manas AI is breaking down barriers that have slowed medical innovation for decades, which will lead to exponential positive impact in our ability to treat human disease.”
Manas AI already has raised nearly $25 million in funding in a seed round led by the investment firm General Catalyst and with help from Greylock and other investors in the life sciences and technology sectors. Hoffman also invested his own money into the company.
The startup has also established a partnership with Microsoft to use the tech-giant’s cloud computing platform.
Hoffman co-founded Manas AI with cancer researcher Dr. Siddhartha Mukherjee, the author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Emperor of all Maladies: A Biography of Cancer.
“Our mission is simple yet profound: to transform how we discover and develop life-saving medicines,” Mukherjee said in the release. “Through the power of AI and our world-class team, we believe we can drastically reduce the time and cost it takes to bring game-changing new treatments to patients.”
Manas AI joins a wave of tech companies that plan to use AI for drug discovery.
Google DeepMind (GOOGL+1.79%) CEO Demis Hassabis said last week that drugs developed by Alphabet’s drug discovery subsidiary and designed by artificial intelligence are expected to head to trial by the end of the year.

Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, has raised $25 million in funding for his latest venture aimed at revolutionizing cancer treatment with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).Hoffman’s new company, Oncolytic AI, is developing cutting-edge technologies that harness the power of AI to analyze vast amounts of data and identify personalized treatment plans for cancer patients. By leveraging AI algorithms, Oncolytic AI aims to improve the accuracy and efficiency of cancer diagnosis and treatment, ultimately leading to better outcomes for patients.
The $25 million in funding, which was led by top-tier venture capital firms, will enable Oncolytic AI to accelerate the development of its AI-powered technologies and bring them to market more quickly. Hoffman, who has a personal connection to cancer through his own family, is determined to make a significant impact in the fight against this devastating disease.
With the support of this substantial investment, Hoffman and his team at Oncolytic AI are poised to make significant strides in the field of cancer research and treatment. By harnessing the power of AI, they aim to bring new hope to cancer patients around the world and transform the way we approach the fight against this deadly disease.

Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Bryce Harper and his family are using the offseason to its fullest. To avoid the freezing temperatures of Nashville, where they stay during the offseason, Harper took his family beachside.
Harper’s family includes his wife Kayla (married in December 2016 at the San Diego California Temple), two daughters and a son: Krew Aron (born in August 2019), Brooklyn Elizabeth (born in November 2020) and Kamryn Ray (born in April 2024).
On Sunday, Kayla shared a series of photos from their beach getaway during the weekend. It includes their kids enjoying and getting themselves engulfed in sand, while the Harper couple enjoyed each other’s company. In one photo, Kayla is seen reclining on a picnic blanket, playfully smiling, while Bryce, in a Tennessee Vols college baseball jersey, lounged beside her.
•
Partners of Harper’s teammates commented under Kayla’s post.
Marissa Hoffman, the wife of Phillies pitcher Jeff Hoffman, wrote:
“The hairrrr gorgeous!!!!,” referring to Kayla’s stunning natural curls.
Hunter Jayde Nola, wife of Aaron Nola, added heart emojis. Dru, girlfriend of Bryson Stott, also admired her curls, writing:
“Look at those curls!! You’re glowing.”
Bryce Harper and Kayla enjoys in their “snow globe”
The beachside vacation comes just a week after the couple enjoyed time with their friends amid freezing temperatures of -10°C, likely in Tennessee.
A week ago, Bryce Harper’s wife Kayla posted a series of photos, where the couple was joined by a group of their friends including Nicole and Scott Dysinger, Bryson Stott and his partner Dru, Terrance Cardon and a few others.
“We got a full nights sleep for a week in our very own snow globe ,” Kayla wrote in the caption.
On the baseball front, Bryce Harper’s Philadelphia Phillies were one of the best teams in the National League, winning the NL East. However, in the postseason, they were subdued by the New York Mets, ending another season without a World Series appearance as Harper’s Hall of Fame resume continues to miss the Fall Classic title.

Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep starred in the Academy Award-winning Kramer vs. Kramer, but some on-set antagonism between the pair left a bad taste in Streep’s mouth. Kramer vs. Kramer is what happens when an actor in his prime, an impossibly talented up-and-comer, a capable director, and a fascinating and moving story come together. Before there was Marriage Story, there was Kramer vs. Kramer, a 1979 legal drama that follows a couple’s divorce and the subsequent evolution of their relationship through the trauma and how it affects their young son.
Dustin Hoffman is at his best as Ted Kramer, a workaholic advertising executive in NYC whose wife of eight years, Joanna (Meryl Streep), suddenly announces she wants a divorce. Shocked and angry, Ted begins an arduous custody battle with Joanna over their young son, Billy (Justin Henry), eventually coming to understand why his wife made this decision. The film went five for eight at the 52nd Academy Awards with Streep and Hoffman winning Best Supporting Actress and Best Actor respectively. Despite the film’s success, the stars didn’t have a good relationship on set.
Dustin Hoffman Allegedly Slapped Meryl Streep On The Kramer Vs. Kramer Set
Streep Said That Hoffman Slapped Her To Get Her In The Right Mindset To Act
Kramer vs. Kramer is a harrowing movie and the anger and stress Ted and Joanna express throughout it is uncomfortably real. According to Meryl Streep, Hoffman’s character bled over into his acting prep because, before the opening scene of Ted and Joanna fighting in the hallway, Streep says that Hoffman actually slapped her in the face (via NYT). Kramer vs. Kramer ended up being one of the defining movies of Meryl Streep’s career, but at the time, she was extremely new to acting, with only a handful of previous credits to her name.

5 Meryl Streep Movies We Wish Had A Sequel (& 5 That Are Perfect On Their Own)
From The Devil Wears Prada to The Deer Hunter, here are some Meryl Streep movies that need a sequel (and some that definitely don’t).
As Streep says herself,
“This is tricky because when you’re an actor, you’re in a scene, you have to feel free. I’m sure that I have inadvertently hurt people in physical scenes. But there’s a certain amount of forgiveness in that. But this was my first movie, and it was my first take in my first movie, and he just slapped me. And you see it in the movie. It was overstepping.”
In retrospect, and after spending decades in the industry, it seems that Streep has come to see a small part of what Hoffman may have been thinking when he allegedly slapped her, but at the same time, she’s quick to make it clear that he had overstepped. Physical scene or not, it was inappropriate.
Hoffman allegedly rattled Gail Strickland, set to play Margaret, so much, that the director had to replace her with Jane Alexander.
Hoffman has never directly addressed the slap, so it’s unclear why exactly he may have done it. However, in the unauthorized biography of Meryl Streep, Her Again: Becoming Meryl Streep, journalist Michael Schulman wrote that Hoffman slapped Streep to purposefully make her angry (via Vogue). A dedicated method actor, Hoffman took his methods too far if he brought someone else into it.
Hoffman’s Other Alleged Abuses On Set
Hoffman Taunted And Startled Streep While Filming
That wasn’t the only time Dustin Hoffman allegedly abused Meryl Streep on the set of Kramer vs. Kramer. In the Schulman biography, Schulman reported other instances of taunting and abuse. One took place during the courtroom scene where Joanna is asked,
“Were you a failure at the one most important relationship in your life? Were you?”
According to Schulman, Hoffman came up to Streep right before the scene and whispered in her ear, “John Cazale” (via VanityFair). The legendary actor John Cazale was Meryl Streep’s partner for years, up until he tragically passed away the year before. It would be a cruel form of “inspiration” for the scene and Streep’s performance if true. Schulman also talks about the scene where Joanna and Ted are arguing over Billy’s custody. Before the scene, Hoffman allegedly asked the camera operator and only the camera operator,
“See that glass there on the table? If I whack that before I leave have you got it in the shot?”
That look of surprise, fear, and anger on Joanna’s face when Ted smashed his wine glass against the wall is real. She told Hoffman afterward,
“Next time you do that, I’d appreciate you letting me know”
If the reports are to be believed, it seems that Hoffman was looking for any opportunity to make Streep uncomfortable.
Streep’s Rep Said Hoffman Eventually Apologized To Her
News Outlets Dug Up A 1979 Accusation That Streep Denied The Veracity Of
While Dustin Hoffman has never officially responded to Meryl Streep’s claims, Streep’s representative did offer that she and Hoffman had come to some sort of understanding. In 2017, Slate unearthed a 1979 Time magazine interview with Streep where she accused Hoffman of touching her breast in their first meeting (via EOnline). After outlets reran the interview, Streep’s rep came out and said that the article was not an,
“…accurate rendering of that meeting.”
Adding,
“There was an offense and it is something for which Dustin apologized. And Meryl accepted that.”
In 2012, Hoffman teared up on stage at the BAFTA Life in Pictures event centered on his film career (via THR). When discussing his time working on Kramer vs. Kramer, Hoffman tearfully said,
“I was getting divorced, I’d been partying with drugs and it depleted me in every way.”
It’s not an apology, but with nothing being officially confirmed, it’s possible that Hoffman doesn’t think his actions warrant specific comment. The fact he’s willing to acknowledge some impropriety on the set, though, suggests he realizes his actions were over the line.
Other Women Have Accused Hoffman Of Sexual And Verbal Harassment
Hoffman Was Accused Of Sexual Misconduct By Seven Women In 2017
Dustin Hoffman’s alleged abuses against Meryl Streep are not the only accusations levied at the actor in his career. In 2017, Anna Graham Hunter accused Hoffman of groping her and verbally harassing her while she was a 17-year-old intern on the set of the TV movie Death of a Salesman (via THR). He allegedly asked Hunter to give him a foot massage among other inappropriate requests and comments. Hoffman responded to the article, saying (via TheGuardian),
“I have the utmost respect for women and feel terrible that anything I might have done could have put her in an uncomfortable situation. I am sorry. It is not reflective of who I am.”
Hoffman was again accused of harassment and physical violation in 2017, this time by Kathryn Rossetter, who performed alongside Hoffman in the 1983 Broadway run of Death of a Salesman (via THR). By the end of 2017, Hoffman had been accused of sexual misconduct by seven different women (via USAToday). The accusations include everything from exposing himself to a teenager in 1980 to sexually assaulting a woman during the production of 1987’s Ishtar. Variety received a letter from Hoffman’s attorney calling the accusations against Hoffman,
“Defamatory falsehoods.”
Hoffman has never publicly addressed the accusations, save for his, “It’s not reflective of who I am” comment.
Streep Appears To Have Moved Past The Feud
Streep Said That All Was Forgiven
Whatever happened between Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman on the set of Kramer vs. Kramer, it appears that the actress has moved past it. In her New York Times interview that she did with Tom Hanks for their 2017 thriller, The Post, Streep talked about her relationship with Hoffman and his actions on set,
“But I think those things are being corrected in this moment. And they’re not politically corrected; they’re fixed. They will be fixed, because people won’t accept it anymore. So that’s a good thing.”
“Those things” she’s referring to are unacceptable actions like slapping an actress to get a rise out of her. In April 2020, Streep appeared on Friday Night with Jonathan Ross and when asked about the slap moment, Streep again said it was wrong, and she could have played the part without Hoffman’s interference, but she also said,
“All is forgiven and I really, really love him and I think he’s an amazing actor, yeah, but boy I was mad that day.”
It’s a measured and conciliatory response from a respected and talented actress.
Kramer vs. Kramer is a drama film directed by Robert Benton, starring Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. Released in 1979, the film follows the story of a man who must adapt to single parenthood after his wife leaves him, only to face a legal battle when she returns for custody of their child. The movie explores themes of family, responsibility, and the impact of divorce.

Dustin Hoffman & Meryl Streep’s Feud Explained — What Really Happened On The Kramer Vs. Kramer Set?The 1979 film Kramer vs. Kramer is a classic that won multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman. However, behind the scenes, there was reportedly tension between Hoffman and his co-star Meryl Streep.
Rumors of a feud between the two actors have circulated for years, with many speculating that Hoffman’s method acting and intense personality clashed with Streep’s more reserved and methodical approach to acting. The tension reportedly came to a head during a particularly emotional scene in the film, where Hoffman’s character angrily slaps Streep’s character.
According to reports, Hoffman insisted on repeatedly slapping Streep in order to capture the raw emotion of the scene, despite Streep’s objections. The actress later revealed in interviews that she was deeply affected by the experience and felt traumatized by Hoffman’s behavior.
While both actors have since downplayed any animosity between them, the incident on the set of Kramer vs. Kramer has left a lasting impression on their relationship. Despite their on-screen chemistry and shared success in the film, the feud between Hoffman and Streep serves as a reminder of the challenges and complexities of working in the film industry.

The Philadelphia Phillies have had an interesting offseason so far. Philadelphia has so much money tied up in its stars, the Phillies are struggling to pay for other big-name free agents.
As a result, the Phillies resorted to acquiring Miami Marlins ace Jesús Luzardo in a trade.
But what about the Phillies’ own free agents?
Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report recently predicted Phillies reliever Jeff Hoffman to leave Philadelphia for a three-year, $36 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. Rymer noted Hoffman as one of the more underrated free agents still available.
“Jeff Hoffman was an All-Star this past year, so it’s not as if he’s some kind of mystery man. All the same, it’s worth acknowledging just how terrific the righty has been over the last two seasons,” Rymer wrote. “We’re talking a 2.28 ERA and a 33.4 strikeout percentage, figures that rank sixth and eighth among right-handed relievers.
“Hoffman is this good precisely because he has two pitches that hitters just can’t hit. One is an upper-90s fastball against which hitters batted .198 in 2024. He also has a slider that has limited hitters to a .136 average over the last two seasons.”
Hoffman is one of the best relievers, aside from closers, in the entire league. He’s a shut-down righty that performs as one of the best high-leverage arms in baseball and the Red Sox could have him for $10 million or $12 million a year.
Boston has a lot of money to spend this winter after whiffing on Juan Soto. Almost none of that money has been spent, aside from around $20 million to acquire Walker Buehler. Boston could afford to pony up some cash to bring Hoffman to Fenway Park.
More MLB: Phillies Likely To Hold Onto $142 Million Star Following Jesús Luzardo Trade
According to reports, Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Jeff Hoffman is predicted to sign a $36 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. This potential move has sparked excitement among Red Sox fans, as Hoffman is known for his strong pitching abilities and could greatly bolster the team’s rotation.Hoffman, who was acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Cincinnati Reds last season, has shown promise on the mound and has the potential to be a valuable asset for the Red Sox. His impressive fastball and curveball have earned him a reputation as a formidable pitcher in the league.
If the deal goes through as expected, Hoffman would join a talented Red Sox pitching staff that includes stars like Chris Sale and Nathan Eovaldi. This signing could potentially strengthen the team’s chances of contending for a playoff spot in the upcoming season.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story as negotiations between Hoffman and the Red Sox continue. Fans are eagerly anticipating an official announcement and are hopeful that Hoffman will bring his talents to Boston next season.
