President Donald Trump agreed with the Federal Reserve for its decision last week to leave interest rates unchanged, an early pivot from his previous demand that the central bank ease “immediately.”
In an exchange with reporters Sunday, Trump said holding its key borrowing level in a range between 4.25%-4.5% was the correct move for the Fed.
“I’m not surprised,” he said regarding the decision, according to multiple reports. “Holding the rates at this point was the right thing to do.”
The statement stood in stark contrast to one Trump delivered when speaking remotely to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. In a Jan. 23 appearance, Trump said he would “demand that interest rates drop immediately.”
The president has no direct authority over the Fed, though he does nominate the chairman as well as other board members. Current Chair Jerome Powell is a Trump nominee, and a frequent target of the president’s criticism.
Markets don’t expect the Fed to lower rates until at least June. In his post-meeting news conference last Wednesday, Powell repeatedly asserted that the Fed doesn’t need to be in a “hurry” to lower further after shaving a full percentage point off the fed funds rate from September to December in 2024.
The Fed’s decision-making got potentially more complicated after Trump on Saturday said he would impose aggressive tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China, the three largest U.S. trading partners. Economists worry that the tariffs will drive up prices at a time when inflation has shown signs of easing.

Jaden Schutt, Tobi Lawal help Virginia Tech hold off Virginia 75-74

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Jaden Schutt had 18 points and Tobi Lawal scored 17 to help Virginia Tech escape with a 75-74 victory over Virginia on Saturday.
Virginia Tech hit 5 of 6 free throws and Lawal and Schutt followed with baskets to cap a 9-0 run that gave the Hokies a 69-56 lead with 6:32 remaining. Virginia chipped away until Andrew Rohde scored in the paint with 45 seconds left to cut the Cavaliers’ deficit to 75-72.
Taine Murray grabbed an errant shot by Lawal with eight seconds left and the Hokies fouled Isaac McKneely before he could fire off a 3-pointer. McKneely made both foul shots and the Cavaliers fouled Mylyjael Poteat, who missed twice. Virginia had a chance to win coming out of a timeout with four seconds left, but Rohde’s floater rolled off the rim at the buzzer.
Schutt made 6 of 11 shots with four 3-pointers for the Hokies (10-12, 5-6 Atlantic Coast Conference). He added five rebounds. Lawal made 6 of 12 shots with a 3-pointer and also had five boards.
McKneely finished with 19 points and seven assists to pace the Cavaliers (10-12, 3-8). Rohde had 12 points, Dai Dai Ames scored 11 and Murray added 10 points and six rebounds.
Schutt hit three 3-pointers and scored 13 in the first half to help Virginia Tech take a 38-31 lead into intermission. McKneely had nine points to lead Virginia.
The Cavaliers lead the all-time series 98-61, including a 43-14 advantage at home.
Virginia plays at Pittsburgh on Monday. Virginia Tech will host SMU on Wednesday.

Eight of the 10 players on this week’s Ladder were chosen to compete in the Castrol Rising Stars event at All-Star Weekend. The other two in the official rookies pool have made multiple appearances here: Philadelphia’s Jared McCain (injured) and the Lakers’ Dalton Knecht.
A breakdown of the 10 rookies reveals five lottery picks and five prospects selected later, including lone second-rounder Jaylen Wells. A sixth lottery pick, Houston’s Reed Sheppard (No. 3 overall), got his invitation to the event as a member of the NBA G League group despite appearing in only three games for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
Here are updates on the Class of 2024 as they wrap up their third full month as pros:
Weekly recap
• The last time a rookie emerged as his team’s “enforcer?” Hmm. Maybe Andrew Bogut with the Bucks in 2005. Or perhaps Kenyon Martin (Nets, 2000), Alonzo Mourning (Hornets, 1992) or Charles Oakley (Bulls, 1985). It’s a throwback role to the NBA of the 1980s and 90s, but Ja Morant revived it when talking with reporters about Grizzlies center Zach Edey.
The big man noticed some friction between his point guard and Utah’s Drew Eubanks. So he stepped in and forced Eubanks to bang someone closer to his size. That earned Edey some praise from Morant afterward.
• McCain, whose quick start to the season had him out front in most Rookie of the Year projections, got noticed as one of the Castrol Rising Stars selections. But he’ll need a replacement on the court at All-Star Weekend due to the left knee injury that ended the Duke product’s season in December.
• Wells started his college career at Sonoma State before transferring to Washington State but hasn’t forgotten his roots. The Memphis rookie is stepping in to help out the school’s ailing sports programs under a #SaveSealwolvesAthletics hashtag on X. And Morant stepped up to help, too.

Rising Stars has a Washington flavor. The Wizards landed three players in the Rising Stars event for All-Star Weekend, with Alex Sarr and Bub Carrington among the 10 rookies selected and Bilal Coulibaly as one of the 11 sophomore players. With another rookie Kyshawn Johnson getting rotation minutes, all that youth helps to explain the Wizards’ ghastly 6-39 record but suggests — by design or attrition — a brighter future.

Trump Says U.S. Will Hold Migrants at Guantánamo Bay
President Trump on Wednesday ordered his administration to prepare to house tens of thousands of “criminal aliens” at the Navy base at Guantánamo Bay, the latest prong in his widening crackdown on immigration.
Mr. Trump did not offer details on how the plan would take shape, but he instructed the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to get the site ready.
“We have 30,000 beds in Guantánamo to detain the worst criminal illegal aliens threatening the American people,” he said. “Some of them are so bad we don’t even trust the countries to hold them, because we don’t want them coming back, so we’re going to send them out to Guantánamo.”
He said the move would “double our capacity immediately,” adding that Guantánamo was a “tough place to get out of.”
In recent weeks, about 40,000 immigrants have been held in private detention centers and local jails around the country as funding constraints have limited the number of detention sites.
Adding 30,000 beds would dramatically expand the government’s detention capacity. A site on the 45-square-mile base could hold those 30,000 deportees. That site is on the opposite side of the body of water called Guantánamo Bay from the Pentagon’s prison for terrorism suspects.
Successive administrations have prepared fields on a remote section, near the airfield but far from the population center, to accommodate tens of thousands of migrants in a sprawling tent city.
The infrastructure was set up starting in the mid-2000s to shelter Cubans and others from the region who had been intercepted while fleeing their country. The Clinton administration had tasked Guantánamo with the role in the 1990s. It was designed as a humanitarian relief operation.
It was not immediately clear how such an operation under Mr. Trump would be staffed, secured and what rights, if any, the deportees would have at Guantánamo Bay. Civil liberties groups expressed concerns.
Vincent Warren, executive director of the Center for Constitutional Rights, said Mr. Trump’s order sent a dark message that “migrants and asylum seekers are being cast as the new terrorist threat, deserving to be discarded in an island prison, removed from legal and social services and supports.”
Mr. Trump’s memo called for expanding the Migrant Operations Center, which currently occupies a small former barracks that has had capacity for up to 120 migrants but in recent years held at most dozens at a time. It is near empty fields that could be transformed into a tent city.
Tom Homan, Mr. Trump’s border czar, told reporters outside the White House on Wednesday that certain migrants could be flown to the island, and that the operation would be run by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE.
“The worst of the worst, the significant public safety threats we can fly them,” he said.
U.S. military and Homeland Security forces have periodically rehearsed how to handle a migrant crisis at the site.
In the 1990s, the base was overwhelmed by more than 45,000 people fleeing crises in both Haiti and Cuba. They were housed in crude tent cities on the populated side of the base, including on the current site of the Pentagon’s detention facility for detainees in the war against terrorism. Today, that facility houses 15 prisoners and is staffed by 800 troops and civilians.
Starting with the George W. Bush administration, the government created a new footprint for a future humanitarian relief operation on the mostly empty side of the base.
During semiannual drills for a humanitarian relief operation, the Southern Command typically flew in a few hundred soldiers from Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio to play different roles.
The proposed site of the tent camps could be surrounded with barbed wire, like the military did for the tent camps of the 1990s, which housed both families and single men.
Deborah Fleischaker, an ICE official during the Biden administration, said that detaining immigrants at the base would be particularly difficult.
“Gitmo is very small and very remote,” she said, using the military’s nickname for the site. “Moving materials and people in and out would be a logistical nightmare. And the makeup of who would be held there is very important. Only men? Women and children? If women and children are there, the housing challenges become even more difficult.”
In the last week, the Trump administration has undertaken a sweeping blitz on immigration, including arrests in communities across the country. Mr. Trump has promised to conduct a historic mass deportation effort, but such a plan would need expanded detention capabilities and more resources.
Since the late 1990s, around 500 migrants have been resettled in third countries from Guantánamo.
“Guantánamo is a black hole designed to escape scrutiny and with a dark history of inhumane conditions. It is a transparent attempt to avoid legal oversight that will fail,” said Lucas Guttentag, a Justice Department official in the Biden administration who once led the lawsuit over Haitian refugees being held at the site.
