Will Chet Holmgren play tonight against the Dallas Mavericks? Latest update on the OKC Thunder star’s injury report | NBA News
Oklahoma City Thunder’s rising star Chet Holmgren is set to miss time due to a hip injury, according to the team’s latest injury report. As the Thunder prepare to take on the Dallas Mavericks on January 23, Holmgren’s absence adds to the list of key players sidelined. The 7-foot center, known for his shot-blocking ability and versatility, will be out indefinitely as he recovers.
Chet Holmgren’s injury comes at a crucial point in the season, with the Oklahoma City Thunder holding an impressive 36-7 record. Despite their success, missing a key contributor like Holmgren could pose challenges in maintaining their dominance, especially on the defensive end. Oklahoma City currently leads the NBA in defensive efficiency, allowing just 103.9 points per game. Holmgren has played a pivotal role in anchoring their defense, and his absence could be felt in upcoming matchups.Oklahoma City Thunder forward Chet Holmgren (7) plays in the second half of an NBA basketball game Nov. 6, 2024, in Denver. In the last 20 games, Chet Holmgren has been a consistent presence for the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 9.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. His rim protection has also been a major asset, contributing one block per contest. With Holmgren sidelined, the Thunder will have to rely more on their depth, including players like Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein, who is also currently out with a calf injury.
Chet Holmgren’s injury isn’t the only concern for Oklahoma City. The team is also without Nikola Topic, who is out for the season with an ACL injury, and Ajay Mitchell, who is dealing with a toe issue. This string of injuries puts additional pressure on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been the Oklahoma City Thunder’s standout performer, leading the NBA in scoring with 33 points per game.
As Oklahoma City looks ahead, the team will need to adjust its game plan to compensate for Chet Holmgren’s absence. The Thunder are known for their strong defensive schemes and efficient scoring, but losing a key shot-blocker could impact their ability to control the paint. Fans will be eager for updates on Holmgren’s recovery, hoping for his return before the playoffs.

Thunder’s Chet Holmgren takes significant leap in injury recovery process
As the Oklahoma City Thunder gear up for their four-game homestand, starting against the Sacramento Kings, injured forward Chet Holmgren is making significant progress in his recovery from a pelvic injury.
After a brief two-game road trip, topped by a 116-109 Thunder loss to the Golden State Warriors, Holmgren joined Oklahoma City during a team shootaround ahead of Saturday’s matchup.
Holmgren was seen running up and down the floor with his teammates, and in one video clip, threw down a dunk, per the Thunder Wire’s Clemente Almanza.
There’s no word if Holmgren is ahead of schedule, but he is slated to make his return either before the All-Star break or after the 2025 All-Star Game, which is when he’s most likely to be back in uniform. This is the second significant step in his recovery process. Holmgren made his first big step earlier this month, joining Oklahoma City amid its 15-game win streak in January.
Thunder’s Chet Holmgren made his last appearance in a 127-116 loss against the Warriors, where he suffered the injury. Chet has played in only 10 games this season while averaging 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 2.0 assists in 2024-25. The Thunder will host the Kings without All-Star Jalen Williams (right sprained wrist) on Saturday.

Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images Thunder forward Jalen Williams has evolved into an All-Star, a well-deserved honor for the 23-year-old forward who’s only strived to improve his game every season.
“Expectations are good. I think the inverse of that is nobody expects anything from you. Then, that kind of sucks,” Williams said. “So I take that as a blessing. I’m not really worried about what other people expect from me. I have a lot of the perspective. I know I’m in my third year. So it’s one of those things I’m constantly searching how to get better.”
It’s an approach that’s led to vast growth for Williams and the Thunder.
“I always say in our exit meeting, above everything else, I want to look back on the year and think about how much better did I get each game and how much better I get throughout the year,” Williams added. “So I think I do a good job of keeping perspective of it. I don’t really care about a lot of the outside noise that’s going on.”
Without Williams, the Thunder will begin their four-game homestand against the Kings at the Paycom Center.

Chet Holmgren Dunks at OKC Thunder Shootaround
When Chet Holmgren splattered onto the Paycom Center floor on Nov. 10 against the Golden State Warriors, everyone knew it would be a long rehab process for the Oklahoma City Thunder big man.
Holmgren suffered a hip fracture marking his second major injury in three years and has been sidelined for the majority of the season. The Oklahoma City Thunder rising star has already missed 35 games and counting.
Along the way though, to the Gonzaga products credit, Holmgren has stayed right on track in the rehab process. The most recent update came just two weeks ago in Dallas when the team announced that the second year center would be re-evaluated in three-to-five weeks.
Since then, Holmgren has made brief appearances at shootarounds, the media has seen small glimpses of him at practices. Until Today.
During Saturday’s shootaround ahead of the Sacramento Kings contest, Holmgren was spotted going through a full-blown workout alongside two-way players Adam Flagler and Alex Ducas. The trio went through offensive drills with coaches and also defended one another in different drills.
Holmgren was a full participant, moving well off the dribble and even getting a block at the rim on Flagler.
In the midst of this shootaround, the seven-footer even elevated for a dunk off the dribble which shows significant strides in the rehab process for Holmgren – compared to the typical light shooting we have seen from him in the past before the real work begins once the viewing portion is over.
His slam dunk on Saturday took social media by storm and is another sign of his potential return looming. Still, the re-evaluation period puts the next Holmgren update at the All-Star break. But for now, this is a good sign.

#Chet #Holmgren #Dunks #OKC #Thunder #ShootaroundChet Holmgren will be top mid-season acquisition
The NBA trade deadline rivals drama television. Each year, fans drool over the possibilities of seismic moves caused by a single player switching squads halfway through the season. This year’s deadline is no different.
Jimmy Butler is the main character as his Miami drama featured another suspension. He’ll likely be the deadline headliner but plenty of other intriguing pieces exist.
Could Cam Johnson be dealt out West? Will the Philadelphia 76ers wave the white flag and sell? Who will the Utah Jazz help get a veteran piece in exchange for draft capital? Will the Los Angeles Lakers get Anthony Davis a backup big? Lots of storylines will intertwine in the Feb. 6 finale.
Like a video game character making one last round of upgrades before the final boss battle, the trade deadline is the last chance contenders get to go out and significantly improve their rosters ahead of a hopeful playoff run. But any move made this year might already be moot. The biggest mid-season acquisition won’t be announced as a traditional trade.
As the Oklahoma City Thunder run away with the first seed, Chet Holmgren continues to rehab from his hip fracture. Nearly three months removed from the injury, the 22-year-old’s return will provide a massive boost for a title contender that’s juggled through injuries all season.
The Thunder are scary as is. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is an MVP candidate, Jalen Williams might be an All-Star, Isaiah Hartenstein has had a career year and the three-headed POA defensive monster of Dort-Caruso-Wallace gives opposing top scorers nightmares the night before their game against OKC.
Add in Holmgren — OKC’s second-best player and a would’ve-been DPOY favorite — the Thunder go from a title contender to the title favorite. That’s what happens when a historically dominant squad adds one of the best 25 players in the league.
Barring the unforeseen, no other trade deadline acquisition will match Holmgren’s impact. He was arguably OKC’s best player in his 10 games. The traditional stats loved him, the advanced metrics adored him and the eye-test believers were wowed by him.
As Holmgren continues to ramp up his physical activity, a return around the All-Star break will give the Thunder a chance to unlock what a fully healthy version of themselves could look like. A comfortable first-place cushion affords OKC plenty of patience for his return and the ability to let him knock off any rust.
If Holmgren utilizes the final 30 games of the season to sharpen up and return to his pre-injury form, the Thunder will enter the playoffs as the unstoppable favorite. The NBA trade deadline will surely create a lot of buzz and fun like it usually does but the excitement will dampen a bit considering the biggest addition is already on a roster.
Chet Holmgren will be the top mid-season acquisition in the NBA this year. The highly-touted rookie has been making waves since entering the league, showcasing his exceptional skills and basketball IQ on both ends of the court. With his unique combination of size, athleticism, and shooting ability, Holmgren has the potential to be a game-changer for any team lucky enough to acquire him. Whether he’s blocking shots, hitting threes, or making plays for his teammates, Holmgren is sure to make an immediate impact wherever he lands.
As the trade deadline approaches, expect to see teams lining up to make a move for this rising star. And when all is said and done, it’s clear that Chet Holmgren will be the top mid-season acquisition in the NBA.
