  • Victor Wembanyama dazzles with 30-point night in homecoming game

PARIS — The first enormous roar from the crowd came before the game even started. All Victor Wembanyama needed to do to get the fans in Paris into a full-blown frenzy was, it turned out, say hello into a microphone.

The cheering just from that lasted about 30 seconds.

Welcome home, Wemby. For the first time as an NBA player, Wembanyama played in his homeland Thursday — the star attraction in this two-game set between San Antonio and Indiana, a series that concludes Saturday night.

“Tonight was definitely different,” Wembanyama said. “It’s a different kind of support that the crowd brings. We try to use the circumstances to our advantage every time, and tonight was an easy night to use that.”

The sellout crowd wasn’t disappointed. Neither was Wembanyama. He had an incredible game — 30 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 blocked shots — and the Spurs rolled to a 140-110 win, San Antonio’s second-largest victory margin of the season and Indiana’s second-largest defeat margin.

Countless fans showed up in Wembanyama jerseys. All of his jerseys, that is. Spurs jerseys in at least three different colors. French national team jerseys. The jerseys he wore when he played in the French league. NBA games are a big deal wherever they go in the world, but this was different. This was a homecoming and a celebration.

“I would just say it’s a pleasure to be part of a league with Victor Wembanyama,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said before the game.

Wembanyama got — by far — the loudest ovation when the starters were introduced. When his face was shown on the scoreboard video screens during the playing of France’s national anthem, the building simply roared. He won the opening tap to start the game; another roar. He missed the game’s first shot, drawing an audible groan. There weren’t many of those the rest of the way.

“It’s not easy to stop him,” Indiana guard Bennedict Mathurin said. “We do what we can. But he’s really good.”

This wasn’t Spurs-Pacers. This was Wemby and a lot of other guys. And if there was pressure, Wembanyama — the league’s reigning Rookie of the Year and a likely All-Star this season — didn’t seem fazed.

“The ovation for him obviously was very, very moving just in terms of a reflection of how this city and country and these people feel about him and he feels about them,” acting Spurs coach Mitch Johnson said. “There’s certain games you know you don’t need to get the guys up for, as you say. This was one of them.”

The Spurs knew before the game that Wembanyama was ready. Harrison Barnes revealed that Wembanyama took over the team’s locker room musical selections. He picked French artists.

“He was excited for today,” Barnes said.

Poor Boomer. He’s the Pacers mascot. He’s a blue, furry thing. His in-game tasks include wearing oversized mitts on his hands and encouraging fans to clap for some defense. This ordinarily works wonders at Pacers home games, which this matchup technically was, at least on paper.

Boomer was foiled repeatedly Thursday. Cheering with him, you see, meant fans would have been cheering against Wembanyama’s Spurs. Not going to happen. Not in Paris.

Technically, it might have happened once. Wembanyama had a spectacular block late in the third quarter, and had it counted it would have been his fourth in as many possessions. The crowd evidently didn’t see referee Zach Zarba gesturing for goaltending, so the basket counted — and that was the only Pacers basket that the French crowd cheered.

“I thought it was a great environment,” Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. “I don’t know what Victor said before the game, but whatever he said worked. They played a great game. Victor’s a great player. The country of France should be very, very proud. He’s a one of a kind. He’s a once every I-don’t-know-how-many-generations a player like that comes along. Just breathtaking, the things that he does.”

Carlisle is right, of course. Everyone is often impressed by Wembanyama. Except Wembanyama. He doesn’t get caught up in highlights or hyperbole. He insists that he wants only to win.

“Tonight, I’m proud of my team,” Wembanyama said. “It was perfect. It was a perfect evening. We had the win, and we won the right way.”

Victor Wembanyama, the highly touted French basketball prodigy, put on a show in his homecoming game, scoring a career-high 30 points to lead his team to a thrilling victory.

The 7-foot-2 center displayed his full array of skills, dominating in the paint with his shot-blocking and rebounding while also showcasing his shooting touch from beyond the arc. Wembanyama’s performance left the crowd in awe and solidified his status as one of the top prospects in the country.

Fans and scouts alike were buzzing about Wembanyama’s potential after his impressive showing, with many comparing him to NBA stars like Rudy Gobert and Kristaps Porzingis. The 18-year-old phenom has already drawn interest from top college programs and professional teams, and his stock is only expected to rise after this standout performance.

Wembanyama’s electrifying display was a reminder of his immense talent and potential, and it’s clear that he is destined for greatness in the world of basketball. Keep an eye on this rising star as he continues to dazzle on the court and make a name for himself on the global stage.

  • This Hornets-Pistons trade would be homecoming for embattled forward

The Charlotte Hornets faced a key decision last summer when Miles Bridges entered free agency. While he had a productive tenure with the team at that point, his off-court issues didn’t do him any favors with many Hornets fans.

So polarizing was Bridges’ reputation with the squad’s supporters that they implored the front office to refrain from offering him a deal, even if it meant losing him for nothing. Evidently, Charlotte had no intention of letting him walk during the offseason.

However, what piqued some folks was that the organization gave the embattled forward a generous three-year, $75 million contract despite the apparent absence of other suitors. Only time will tell if Bridges can earn his keep, but the early returns have not looked promising.

    The trade

It’s unclear what the Hornets’ game plan is during the trade season. It stands to reason that the only untouchables are LaMelo Ball, Brandon Miller, and Mark Williams. A case can be made that Tidjane Salaun should be included in the list, considering that he is the franchise’s latest lottery pick.

As for Bridges, his spot on the roster is anything but safe, especially now that he is not bound by a trade restriction anymore.

Several teams could have a use for the 26-year-old veteran, including probably the Detroit Pistons. Greg Swartz of Bleacher Report believes Charlotte should propose a trade with its conference rival and ask for Isaiah Stewart, Tim Hardaway Jr., and a 2025 second-round pick via the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Bridges.

The Pistons have been one of the league’s surprises this season, running to a 21-19 record. They might need some help on offense down the stretch because starting shooting guard Jaden Ivey could miss the rest of the season because of a broken fibula. In Swartz’s trade scenario, Bridges would return home to Michigan and likely take over Hardaway Jr.’s starting spot to give the squad another potent scorer.

    The grade

Charlotte probably won’t like the idea of surrendering its third-leading scorer without landing a first-round pick (although the second-round selection in the trade idea is slated to be the 33rd overall) or multiple second-rounders.

To be fair to Stewart, though, he would be an intriguing addition for the Hornets. He could bring the toughness and defense that have been sorely lacking in Buzz City in recent weeks.
And maybe acquiring “Beef Stew” would make it easier for the top brass to finally trade Nick Richards. On the flip side, his limited skills wouldn’t be able to lift the team’s bottom-ranked offense and could give Ball and Miller less room to operate with the ball.

Meanwhile, Hardaway Jr. could be the solution to the Hornets’ lack of reliable bench scorers stemming from Tre Mann’s prolonged stint on the sidelines. However, the journeyman’s streakiness could prove to be more detrimental to the squad than helpful. The good news is that he will be a free agent in the offseason, so Charlotte could just let him walk if he doesn’t play up to par.

Perhaps the only way the Hornets would even consider going through with such a trade proposal is if they also have other moves planned to address their other major weaknesses.

The Charlotte Hornets and Detroit Pistons are reportedly discussing a potential trade that would bring an embattled forward back to his former team. This trade would not only be a homecoming for the player, but it could also provide a fresh start and new opportunities for both teams involved.

The player in question is none other than Blake Griffin, who began his NBA career with the Los Angeles Clippers before being traded to the Pistons in 2018. Griffin has faced his fair share of challenges in Detroit, including injuries and a decline in his performance.

However, a return to Charlotte, where Griffin played college basketball at the University of Oklahoma, could reignite his career and provide a much-needed boost for the Hornets. In exchange, the Pistons would likely receive a package of players and draft picks to help them rebuild and move forward.

While the trade has not been finalized yet, it is certainly an intriguing possibility that could shake up the Eastern Conference. Stay tuned for updates on this potential homecoming for Blake Griffin and the impact it could have on both the Hornets and Pistons.

  • Birmingham Bowl is long-awaited homecoming for Georgia Tech coach Brent Key

Birmingham Bowl is long-awaited homecoming for Georgia Tech coach Brent Key

Key, 46, left Birmingham — and Clay, Alabama, to be more specific — almost 30 years ago. Sure, he’s been back hundreds of times (he joked this month he has journeyed along I-20 on thousands of trips) on recruiting visits and to reunite with family, and he lived down the road in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where he was an assistant coach during the latter part of the last decade, but there hasn’t been a homecoming quite like this.

Old friends have been visiting Key at the team hotel while he works the phone recruiting for the 2025 roster. Key’s high school football coach spoke to the Jackets after Thursday’s practice. Rickey J’s bakery in Birmingham got word that Key was in town and sent over a caramel cake, Key’s favorite, to Donna’s house.

“He’s just got support from everybody,” Donna said.

As a child, Key grew up in Trussville, Alabama, before Key and his mother moved to Clay when Key was 12. Key’s father, James Key, and Donna divorced when Key was young. James Key died in 2011 at the age of 60, and there never was much of a relationship between him and Key.

So Donna and her parents were the guiding lights for Key, a child who tested for the gifted program at school at the age of 7, who was active in church and on the scholar’s bowl team, was a Cub Scout and was a youth baseball standout. He was close with his maternal grandfather Don Martin, a man who ran glass-making businesses across the state and taught Key how to fish and to play golf and other sports.

Martin taught Key much about life, too, Donna said.

It wasn’t until junior high school that Key, who Donna called a mild and sweet child, was allowed to play football. He always had liked the sport, but when he finally put on the pads, he instantly fell in love. He also had another father figure enter his life in the form of Hewitt-Trussville High School coach Jack Wood.

“Brent always, No. 1, he always worked extremely hard. That’s probably one thing that sticks out to me as much as anything,” Wood told the AJC. “He worked in the offseason, in the weight room, the running program. Everything he did he got better and better. And he worked real hard in the classroom. He was a very good student, and that’s the most important thing there. He was a good teammate. I think that’s how the other guys there viewed him, and that’s the ultimate to me.”

Key became a pretty good offensive lineman, despite weighing only 225 pounds as a senior. His work in the classroom and on the field earned him a scholarship offer to play for Tech.

He left Alabama for Atlanta in 1996.

“I still can see it my head. I was up in his room packing, and he was up there with several of his friends because they were so all excited for him,” Donna recalled. “I was kind of sad, and he was like, ‘Oh, it’s no big deal. I’m just going over there for school. I’ll be back all the time.’ He wasn’t.”

Key’s work ethic didn’t waver in Atlanta. Between practices, games and studies, Key needed to make extra money, so he worked pressure-washing decks and windows during his underclassmen years, then at a concert venue as part of the security team as an upperclassmen.

Nineteen years after Key played his last down at Bobby Dodd Stadium, Key returned to Tech to be his alma mater’s offensive line coach. In 2022 he was named the program’s interim coach eight games into that season before being handed the full-time title in November of that year.

Now Key has a chance to lead the Jackets to eight wins in a season for the first time since 2016. An eighth victory could come in the same city in which Key witnessed his first college football game in person alongside Martin: the 1985 All-American Bowl between Tech and Michigan State at Legion Field.

“This means the world to me, the family and friends that will be around,” Key admitted earlier this month. “Birmingham is college football. Always has been. To play in a bowl game here is pretty special.”

As for Wood, he said will attend the game Friday. Tech offensive lineman Jordan Williams and defensive lineman Jordan van den Berg said the veteran coach told the team about the importance of hard work and effort leading into the matchup with Vanderbilt, qualities Wood recognized early on from a young Key.

Donna, however, won’t be able to make the game, as she’s recovering from a pair of surgeries. But she’ll have some family friends over to watch it on TV and to help her cheer for her son, one of Birmingham’s sons.

After a long and successful career as an assistant coach, Brent Key finally got his opportunity to lead a team as the head coach of Georgia Tech. And what better way to make his debut than in the Birmingham Bowl, a game that holds special significance for Key.

Key, a Birmingham native, grew up watching the Birmingham Bowl and dreaming of one day coaching in the prestigious game. Now, that dream has become a reality as he leads his Yellow Jackets against a tough opponent in this year’s matchup.

For Key, this game is not just about a chance to showcase his coaching abilities, but also a long-awaited homecoming to his roots. The Birmingham Bowl holds a special place in his heart, and he is determined to make the most of this opportunity.

As Key prepares his team for the big game, he is filled with excitement and gratitude for the chance to return home and lead his team on such a big stage. The Birmingham Bowl is not just another game for Key, it is a chance to fulfill a lifelong dream and make his mark as a head coach.

So, as the Yellow Jackets take the field in the Birmingham Bowl, all eyes will be on Brent Key as he leads his team in a game that means so much to him personally. And with his passion, dedication, and determination, there is no doubt that Key will make the most of this long-awaited homecoming.
