  • Honda Recalls 290,000 Cars in US Over Engine Issues


    Honda, including its premium brand Acura, is recalling 294,612 vehicles in the U.S. because of a software problem that could cause engines to stall or lose power, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Wednesday.

    The recall affects certain 2022-2025 Acura MDX Type S, 2023-2025 Honda Pilot and 2021-2025 Acura TLX Type-S models. The NHTSA said a fuel-injection electronic control unit software error may lead to engine failure, increasing the risk of crashes or injuries.

    Why It Matters

    Stalling on a major road could lead to serious accidents or even death.

    This is the third major Honda recall in less than a year. In October 2024, nearly 1.7 million Hondas were recalled because of steering problems. Another 700,000 were recalled at the same time because of fuel pump problems.

    What To Know

    This recall follows an NHTSA investigation into engine failure in 1.4 million Hondas produced between 2016 and 2020, which was instigated on November 8, 2024.

    The investigation specifically looked into rod bearing failures in the cars with six-cylinder engines. However, Wednesday’s recall is due to a software error. Jake Berg of Acura Public Relations told Newsweek that Wednesday’s recall and the NHTSA investigation in 2024 are not related.

    This large Honda recall comes just five days after Ford recalled 270,827 Bronco Sport SUVs and Maverick pickups because of faulty 12-volt batteries, four days after Kia recalled 80,000 cars because of wiring defects in their airbags and seat belt safety system, and a month after Tesla recalled 700,000 vehicles because of cars failing to alert drivers about low pressure, which could lead to crashes.

    The Tesla models affected by this recall were the 2024 Cybertruck, 2017-2025 Model 3, and 2020-2025 Model Y vehicles.

    Honda has a strong sales history, producing many of America’s most popular vehicles. Honda’s CR-V holds the fifth spot in Car and Driver‘s most popular SUVs, cars or trucks in America list for 2024, and the Honda Civic was the 10th most popular car in America last year. Neither of those cars is being recalled by the NHTSA.

    Honda has big plans for its future. It is planning to release a new battery-electric SUV, the 2026 Acura RSX, later this year. It will be the first all-electric Acura not modeled off a General Motors product.
