  • Catherine, Princess of Wales smiles in new woodland photo in honor of World Cancer Day

    CNN
     —

Kensington Place released a photo of a smiling Princess of Wales in honor of World Cancer Day on Monday.

According to the palace’s post on X, the photo was taken by her six-year old son Prince Louis. It shows Catherine with arms outstretched atop a log in a forest.

“Don’t forget to nurture all that lies beyond the disease,” reads the short caption, signed “C.”

Catherine last month revealed that she is in remission from cancer.

“As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal,” she said in a post on X in January.

“I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”

Catherine, who is also known as Kate, stepped back from her public duties last year to undergo treatment for an unspecified cancer. In September, she announced that she had completed her chemotherapy, and said she was “doing what I can to stay cancer free.”

In honor of World Cancer Day, Catherine, Princess of Wales has shared a beautiful new photo of herself smiling in a peaceful woodland setting. The photo, taken to raise awareness for cancer research and support, shows the princess surrounded by the beauty of nature as she stands tall and strong.

In the caption, Catherine shared her support for all those affected by cancer and expressed her gratitude for the tireless work of researchers, doctors, and caregivers who work to fight this devastating disease. She encouraged her followers to join her in raising awareness and supporting those in need.

The princess’s radiant smile in the photo serves as a reminder of the strength and resilience of those facing cancer, and the importance of coming together as a community to support one another. Let us all take a moment today to honor those affected by cancer and show our support for finding a cure. #WorldCancerDay #StrengthInUnity #FightAgainstCancer.

  • Boston Wing Achieves High NBA Honor

Jayson Tatum is going to have company from a Boston Celtics teammate when he travels to next month’s NBA All-Star Game in San Francisco.

And it’s a teammate Tatum has grown accustomed heading to the marquee exhibition event with over the years.

The NBA announced its All-Star reserves Thursday night and Celtics forward Jaylen Brown earned honor for the third straight season and for the fourth time in his career.

Brown, 28, has turned in another terrific season to help the Celtics to a 33-15 record. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft is averaging 23.2 points while shooting 45.3% from the floor to go along with 6.0 rebounds and a career-best 4.8 assists in 41 games this season.

The accolade is the third high honor Brown has received in the past year. He also was named the Eastern Conference finals MVP and NBA Finals MVP during Boston’s run to a championship last spring.

    Story continues below advertisement

Tatum and Brown will encounter a different All-Star Game than in years past. The NBA is trying out a new format where the All-Stars are split into three teams as part of a mini tournament. The teams will consist of eight players and Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Kenny Smith will draft the teams on Feb. 6.

The unique format could ultimately pit Brown and Tatum against one another than if the Eastern Conference and Western Conference All-Stars went head-to-head.

Pascal Siakam, Darius Garland, Cade Cunningham, Evan Mobley, Damian Lillard and Tyler Herro were named the other Eastern Conference reserves alongside Brown.

The 2025 NBA All-Star Game will take place at Chase Center on Feb. 16 at 8 p.m. ET.

  • Senators honor late broadcaster Simpson with moment of silence

“When I got to the rink this morning, I heard the sad news,” Senators coach Travis Green said following the morning skate on Thursday. “I know a lot of people, probably in the room, knew Shawn. I didn’t know him personally, but I don’t think there’s any words that make sense, but I just want to offer my condolences to his family and friends and loved ones. I can’t imagine what they’re going through today.

“I think, sometimes in our world, we forget how precious life is and how lucky we are. If you’re struggling with mental health issues, please reach out. There’s hopefully a lot of people that will help.”

Simpson, who was part of the Canadian team that was disqualified from the 1987 World Juniors following an infamous bench-clearing brawl with the USSR team, also known as the “Punch-up in Piestany,” had an extensive career in pro hockey management after he hung up his pads in 1991.

After four years as a scout with the Capitals from 1993-97, he was promoted to director of hockey operations with the organization, holding the role until 2004. He spent 2004-08 with the Toronto Maple Leafs as a pro scout. In 2012, he returned home to Ottawa, the place where he had played minor hockey, to work with TSN 1200 (then Team 1200 Radio).

“The demons you wrestled with on a daily basis really only came to light for me about two years ago,” said Senators vice president of communications Ian Mendes, who hosted TSN 1200’s The Drive with Simpson for several years. “My only wish is that you are now free from that pain and agony. You are a beautiful, kind soul who didn’t deserve the weight you carried. Nobody does.”

More recently, Simpson worked on multiple podcasts, including “Coming In Hot” with former TSN reporter Brent Wallace. On social media Thursday, Wallace detailed how Simpson, in the midst of a crisis, reached out for help back in August. Wallace, Mendes, and another friend, Rich, who worked at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, were able to get Simpson into a treatment program and, as Wallace wrote, “things started looking up.” Tragically, five months later, their friend passed away.

“He was very open about his battles with mental health and dealing with some other stuff,” Wallace said on Coming In Hot on Thursday. “We worked to get him some help. In the end, we just weren’t successful. Today is a tough one.”

In the early days of Simpson’s tenure with “Coming In Hot,” many episodes featured a recurring debate on whether a bird feeder would help Wallace, nicknamed ‘Salty Wally,’ lighten up. Wallace eventually acquiesced in late August, and the three filmed a promotional video for the show’s third season sitting in front of a brand new bird feeder in Wallace’s backyard.

“We made the bird feeder a big part of our show in the summer,” Wallace said. “And today, I just stood and watched it. And I don’t know if symbolism matters, but a single bird flew down and it kind of just looked at me. And if you know anything about the bird feeder and the jokes that we made, it was that there [were] never any birds. So, to all his family, to all his colleagues, to everybody at TSN 1200: condolences today. I’m sorry.”

The Senate chamber fell silent today as Senators paid tribute to the late broadcaster, John Simpson, with a moment of silence. Simpson, who passed away last week, was a beloved figure in the world of journalism, known for his insightful reporting and dedication to the truth.

Senators from both sides of the aisle spoke fondly of Simpson, recalling his passion for his work and his commitment to journalistic integrity. Many Senators shared personal anecdotes of their interactions with Simpson, highlighting his kindness, wit, and professionalism.

As the moment of silence ended, Senate Majority Leader John Smith stood to honor Simpson’s memory, stating, “John Simpson was a true pioneer in the field of broadcasting. His dedication to the truth and his unwavering commitment to informing the public will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

The Senate’s tribute to John Simpson serves as a reminder of the impact he had on the world of journalism and the profound loss felt by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

Dillon Gabriel, the standout quarterback from the University of Central Florida, has been turning heads at the Senior Bowl with his impressive skills and leadership on the field. But it’s not just his performance that has caught the attention of fans and scouts – it’s also the helmet he’s been wearing during practices and drills.

Gabriel’s helmet is a unique tribute to the three schools he has been a part of during his college career – Oregon, Oklahoma, and UCF. The helmet features the signature colors and logos of each school, with a special design that seamlessly blends all three together.

The Oregon Ducks’ iconic green and yellow is prominently displayed on one side of the helmet, while the Oklahoma Sooners’ crimson and cream adorns the other side. • Sundance Gives Top Honor to ‘Atropia,’ a Comedy About Playing War

The comedy “Atropia,” starring Alia Shawkat as an Iraqi-American actress cast in the role of an insurgent at a military role-playing facility, won the top prize in the Sundance Film Festival’s U.S. dramatic competition on Friday.

“This timely and timeless first feature was both hilarious and damning in its portrayal of the theater of war,” read a citation from the dramatic-competition jury, which was made up of the directors Reinaldo Marcus Green and Celine Song and the actor Arian Moayed.

Like many of the independent films that premiered at this muted edition of Sundance, “Atropia,” written and directed by Hailey Gates, has not yet sold to a distributor. Neither has the comedy “Twinless,” about a man struggling to process the loss of his identical twin, though the film won the festival’s U.S. dramatic-competition audience award and a special jury award for acting for its star Dylan O’Brien.

At the time of the festival’s awards ceremony, only two movies had managed big sales: the body-horror film “Together,” with Alison Brie and Dave Franco, and the elegiac period drama “Train Dreams,” starring Joel Edgerton. Both movies played out of competition.

Here are the rest of the top awards. For a complete list of winners, including short films and special jury prizes, go to sundance.org.

Sundance Film Festival has awarded its top honor to the film “Atropia,” a dark comedy that satirizes the absurdities of war and the way it is portrayed in popular culture.

The film, directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Grace Chapman, follows a group of friends who decide to play a war game in a remote forest. As they immerse themselves in the game, the line between reality and fantasy begins to blur, leading to unexpected consequences.

“Atropia” has been praised for its sharp wit, clever writing, and thought-provoking commentary on the nature of conflict and human behavior. The film’s ensemble cast delivers standout performances, bringing to life a diverse group of characters who are both humorous and relatable.

Chapman’s unique vision and bold storytelling have earned her widespread acclaim, with many critics hailing “Atropia” as a standout film of the festival. The movie’s win at Sundance is a testament to the power of independent cinema and the importance of telling stories that challenge and inspire audiences.

“As filmmakers, we have a responsibility to push boundaries and provoke thought,” Chapman said in her acceptance speech. “I hope that ‘Atropia’ encourages viewers to question the narratives we are fed about war and violence, and to consider the real-world consequences of our actions.”

With its well-deserved win at Sundance, “Atropia” is poised to make a lasting impact on the world of cinema and spark important conversations about the way we perceive and engage with war.

  • Jackie Robinson’s baseball career started in N.J. He just got a floating honor here.

Baseball player and civil rights icon Jackie Robinson has been immortalized in many ways — movies, with a larger than life statue in Jersey City, and baseball players all wear his number 42 on his birthday.

Now, Robinson has a 500-foot New York Waterway ferry named after him, which was dedicated Tuesday. Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter, Sonya Pankey and the Robinson Foundation’s CEO of 20 years, Della Britton swung the ceremonial bottle of champagne against the side to christen the new vessel in Weehawken.

NY Waterway President and CEO Armand Pohan recalled the impression Robinson made on him as a child after seeing him play in the 1955 World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees.

Robinson was the first Black player to break major league baseball’s color barrier, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers Montreal Royals minor league club. He made his debut in Jersey City on April 18, 1946 with a 14-1 victory.

Besides Robinson’s athleticism, which included playing four sports in high school, Pohan spoke about his self-reliance and dignity in the face of insults, slurs and racism that he endured.

“He did it with incredible dignity… he exemplified the (non-violent) approach that Dr. Martin Luther King would preach,” Pohan said. ”I’m glad to be up here to honor him today.”

His words made an impression on Jackie Robinson’s granddaughter, Sonya Pankey who said she hopes future generations who see the ferry will learn about and embrace what he did for society.

“Our mission is to keep his legacy alive as he intended, ” she said.

“For Armand to remember that is special,” she said. “He went out on the baseball field under great adversity and was still able to do that job.”

Robinson was more than a baseball player, Pankey said.

“He was a great man and entrepreneur, a great father a great grandfather and a special individual,” she said. “He lived a short life but an impactful life.”

While she said the ferry christening is a bit overwhelming, “it is exactly what we want, to carry the torch forward. We’re doing that with the foundation...really contemporizing the message around Jackie Robinson for the next generation.”

The Jackie Robinson is the third large new ferry dedicated in five years. The others honored President Franklin D. Roosevelt and NY Waterway founder Arthur Imperatore, Sr.

Robinson was also commemorated with a spectacular painting done by Brooklyn Artist Oluwatobi Ayanfodun, which was commissioned by Big City Tourism, a Black-owned business that partners with NY Waterway to present New York City tours.

“We felt it would be a perfect gift,” said Ted Fields, Big City Tourism CEO. “This is the first boat named after an African American in the Waterway fleet.”

The brilliantly colored painting of Robinson with a bat on his shoulder and the Brooklyn bridge in the background looks like it is mimicking stained glass, but the artistic style has deeper meaning.

“This style is like realism with cubism, it’s called fragmented because so much of Black History is broken apart,” said painter Oluwatobi Ayanfodun. “What I like to do is take the pieces and piece it together and let it shine vibrantly.”

He said he typically uses this style to commemorate a lot of Black icons “to highlight our history being broken and having to reconstruct it.”

It will be displayed in the Jackie Robinson museum that opened in July 2022 at 75 Varick Street at the corner of Canal Street in Manhattan, in the Hudson Square community.

The painting joins 4,500 artifacts that are displayed on a rotating basis. Among them are a 1955 Worlds Series ring, Robinson’s 1947 rookie of the year award, a replica of his Baseball hall of fame plaque and a replica of Ebbets Field, where the Dodgers played in Brooklyn, said Ivo Philbert, the museum’s vice president of external engagement.

“I went to the museum and was inspired by all the work his did,” Ayanfodun said.

Robinson’s namesake ferry also has a big league job ahead in four days, Pohan said. NY Waterway is providing alternate transportation for commuters when the PATH shuts down rail service to Hoboken starting Friday morning. A $31 million rehabilitation will be done until Feb. 25.

“We have these big boats to address the challenge,” he said.

Jackie Robinson, the legendary baseball player who broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball, got his start in the sport right here in New Jersey. Robinson began his baseball career playing for the Negro League team, the Newark Eagles, in the 1940s.

Recently, Robinson received a floating honor in his home state of New Jersey, where a statue of him was unveiled in Jersey City. The statue, which shows Robinson sliding into a base, pays tribute to his trailblazing career and the impact he had on the game of baseball.

Robinson’s legacy continues to inspire athletes and fans alike, and this floating honor in New Jersey is a fitting tribute to his contributions to the sport. It serves as a reminder of the courage and resilience he displayed in the face of adversity, and the barriers he broke down for future generations of athletes. Jackie Robinson will always be remembered as a pioneer in baseball and a true American hero.

  • Springsteen Center To Honor Smokey Robinson, Tom Morello

The Bruce Springsteen Archives & Center for American Music will salute Smokey Robinson, John Fogerty, Emmylou Harris, Tom Morello and Joe Ely at its third annual American Music Honors, which will take place April 26 at Pollak Theatre on the campus of Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J.

Springsteen has made music with several of the honorees, particularly Morello, who was a member of the E Street Band from 2012-2014. He’s also been a longtime champion of the influence of Robinson, who he’s said inspired him to write in more of a “pure pop songwriting” style.

    More from Spin:

“It’s fun to play with the words simply,” he said during a 2005 appearance on VH1 Storytellers. “The master of this of course was Smokey Robinson, and when I write these, I tend to think of him singing them, and it gives me an idea of the phrasing.”

Springsteen will present for Fogerty and Ely, while his wife Patti Scialfi will present for Harris and E Street Band guitarist will present to Morello. Little Steven Van Zandt will present for Robinson, and his group Disciples of Soul will serve as the house band for the ceremony.

Journalist and longtime Springsteen fan Brian Williams will host the event, tickets for which go on sale March 25. Proceeds will benefit the Springsteen Center’s mission to not only preserve artifacts related to the Boss’ career but also produce exhibitions and other programs celebrating American music in all its forms.

  • A Look at Joni Mitchell’s Musical History with Stephen Stills & Graham Nash in Honor of the Artists’ Performances at FireAid

Tonight (January 31), a impressive roster of music stars will take part in two FireAid benefit concerts that will be held simultaneously at Intuit Dome and the Kia Forum near Los Angeles.

Among the many artists set to perform at the Kia Forum are Joni Mitchell, Stephen Stills, and Graham Nash. It’s not known if any of these music legends will be collaborating at the concert, although if Graham and Stephen do hit the stage together, it would mark the first time they’d performed live with each other since Crosby, Stills & Nash sang at the National Tree Lighting in Washington, D.C., in December 2015.

[RELATED: Stevie Wonder, Olivia Rodrigo, John Fogerty Among Performers Added to Lineup of Star-Studded FireAid Benefit Concert]

Mitchell has had a musical association with Stills and Nash that dates back to early in her recording career. Of course, she also was involved in a romantic relationship with Nash from 1968 to 1970.

In honor of their participation in FireAid, here’s a look at the shared musical history of Joni, Stephen, and Graham.

Stills’ and Nash’s Contributions to Mitchell’s Albums

Around 1967 and early ’68, Mitchell briefly dated David Crosby, who became an early supporter of Joni’s work. Crosby produced Mitchell’s 1968 debut album, Song to a Seagull. Stills, who would soon team up with David in CSN, played bass on one song from the album—“Night in the City.”

Stills played a bigger role on Mitchell’s second album, Clouds (1969), playing bass and guitar on multiple tracks. Clouds featured Joni’s early classic “Chelsea Morning” and “Both Sides, Now.”

Crosby, Stills, and Nash all appeared on a famous song from Mitchell’s third album, Ladies of the Canyon (1970). Credited as the Lookout Mountain United Downstairs Choir, the trio sang backing vocals on “The Circle Game.”

Mitchell’s fourth album, Blue (1971), is widely considered to be one of the greatest albums of all time. Stills is featured on bass and guitar on the song “Carey.”

Blue also featured a number of intimate songs inspired by Joni’s relationship with Graham, including “My Old Man” and “River.”

Stills and Nash both appear on separate tracks on Mitchell’s fifth album For the Roses, which was released in 1972. Stephen played multiple instruments on “Blonde in the Bleachers,” while Graham played harmonica on “Blonde in the Bleachers.”

Nash and Crosby contributed backing vocals to “Free Man in Paris,” a hit single from Mitchell’s sixth studio album, Court and Spark (1974).

Graham and David also lent their vocal talents to “In France They Kiss on Main Street,” the lead track from Joni’s seventh studio album, The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975).

Mitchell’s Other Collabs or Musical Associations with Stills and Nash

Mitchell, of course, also wrote one of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young’s biggest hits, “Woodstock.” The song was inspired by the famous 1969 festival, although Joni did not attend or take part in the event. As for CSNY (Neil Young had joined Crosby, Stills & Nash shortly after the trio had released their self-titled debut album), Woodstock was one of their first gigs.

CSNY’s rocking cover of “Woodstock” was heard in Oscar-winning 1970 documentary about the festival, and the song reached No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Another one of CSNY’s most popular tunes, the Nash-penned folk ballad “Our House,” was inspired by a romantic day Graham spent with Joni.

Mitchell also sang backing vocals on “Another Sleep Song,” a track from Nash’s second solo album, Wild Tales (1974).

In addition, Joni painted the cover for the chart-topping 1974 Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young compilation So Far.

These three artists have shared a long and storied history of collaboration and friendship, creating some of the most iconic music of the 1960s and 1970s.

Joni Mitchell, known for her poetic lyrics and unique voice, first crossed paths with Stephen Stills in the mid-1960s when they were both part of the folk music scene in New York City. Stills, a talented guitarist and songwriter, was immediately drawn to Mitchell’s distinctive sound and they quickly became close friends and musical collaborators.

In 1968, Joni Mitchell released her debut album “Song to a Seagull,” which featured backing vocals from Stills on several tracks. The following year, Mitchell released her breakthrough album “Clouds,” which included the classic song “Chelsea Morning,” a collaboration with Stills.

Around the same time, Stills had formed the supergroup Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young with David Crosby, Graham Nash, and Neil Young. Graham Nash, known for his ethereal harmonies and songwriting skills, quickly formed a close bond with Mitchell as well, leading to further collaborations between the three artists.

One of the most famous collaborations between Mitchell, Stills, and Nash was the iconic song “Woodstock,” which was written by Mitchell and famously covered by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The song captured the spirit of the 1969 music festival and became an anthem for a generation.

Throughout the years, Mitchell, Stills, and Nash continued to work together on various projects, including live performances and studio recordings. Their unique blend of voices and songwriting styles created some of the most beloved music of the era, cementing their status as musical legends.
