  • We used to honor our heroic defenders — Trump’s Jan. 6 pardons ended that

The evidence of the battle that raged on one of the darkest days in American history — Jan. 6, 2021 — is gone. The bloodstains have been scrubbed off. The smashed windows, broken doors and damaged historical murals and statues have been repaired. Ordinarily, tour guides would describe what had happened there, but they have been told not even to mention it.

Trump’s grant of clemency to the Jan. 6 convicted criminals — more than 1,500 pardons and 14 commutations — was only part of an official memory erasure of the gallant defense by the Capitol and D.C. police of American democracy, the Capitol building, the vice president and his wife, and hundreds of senators, congressmen, staffers and others.

Among the recipients of clemency were 169 people who pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers defending the Capitol. According to Trump’s proclamation, however, his clemency corrected a “grave national injustice.” The rioters, in other words, were the victims that day, which makes the police officers the villains.

Trump’s proclamation was issued in the face of graphic, horrifying footage showing rioters breaking into the Capitol and assaulting 140 police officers with, among other weapons, pitchforks, a metal whip, a tomahawk ax, bear spray and stun guns, severely injuring many. Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick died the next day from his injuries.

Have you heard the joke about the man who denies cheating on his wife even after she catches him in bed with another woman? The man says to his wife, “Who are you going to believe, me or your own lying eyes?” It’s not amusing now that the joke is the official policy of the Trump administration in insisting that the Jan. 6 convictions were an injustice.

A day after the pardons, House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) continued the memory wipe. He announced the formation of a select subcommittee to investigate Jan. 6 which, he promised, will “uncover the full truth owed to the American people.” Johnson defines that “full truth” by saying that “peaceful protests and people who engage in that should never be punished.”

Here is one example, among many, of what Johnson apparently claims was a “peaceful protest” on Jan. 6. David Dempsey, a man from Van Nuys, California with a history of violent protests, was among those who stormed the Capitol. He beat one policemen’s head with a crutch so severely that it left the policeman with a concussion. Dempsey sprayed bear spray directly under the face shield and into the face of another policeman, who thought of his family because he believed he was about to die.

After pleading guilty to two counts of assaulting police with deadly or dangerous weapons in the Capitol attack, Dempsey was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Thanks to Trump’s pardon, he is out on the streets and officially proclaimed to be the innocent victim of a corrupt prosecution.

Congress passed a spending bill in 2022 that required the installation of a Jan. 6 commemorative plaque honoring the police officers who defended the Capitol. The plaque was supposed to be installed on the West Front of the Capitol, where the worst violence took place. It has been created, but it has yet to be put up, because congressional Republicans don’t want to honor, or even remember, those who defended them from a violent mob.

The plaque bears this inscription: “On behalf of a grateful Congress this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021. Their heroism will never be forgotten.”

Trump and the Republicans are doing everything they can to make sure that, in fact, their heroism is forgotten.

Gregory J. Wallance was a federal prosecutor in the Carter and Reagan administrations and a member of the ABSCAM prosecution team, which convicted a U.S. senator and six representatives of bribery. He is the author of “Into Siberia: George Kennan’s Epic Journey Through the Brutal, Frozen Heart of Russia.

On January 6, 2021, a violent mob stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results of the presidential election. In the chaos that ensued, brave law enforcement officers and security personnel put their lives on the line to protect our lawmakers and defend our democracy.

In the aftermath of this shameful attack, former President Donald Trump has chosen to pardon several individuals who participated in or supported the insurrection. These pardons not only undermine the rule of law, they also dishonor the heroic defenders who risked everything to keep our elected officials safe.

By pardoning those who sought to overthrow the government, Trump has sent a dangerous message that violence and lawlessness will be rewarded. This is a betrayal of the principles that our country was founded on and a slap in the face to those who serve in uniform to protect us.

We must never forget the sacrifices made by our heroic defenders on January 6 and every day. Let us honor their courage and dedication by standing up against those who seek to undermine our democracy and by holding accountable those who would seek to destroy it.

  • Two Duke Basketball One-And-Dones Land Rising Stars Honor

Former Duke basketball standouts Jared McCain and Dereck Lively II are in the 2025 Rising Stars player pool that the NBA announced on Tuesday. However, neither the Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard nor the Dallas Mavericks sophomore center will be on the court for the four-team tournament in the Golden State Warriors’ Chase Center on Feb. 14.

Even so, the fact they are among the 28 Rising Stars selections, consisting of 10 rookies, 10 sophomores, and seven G League talents, is a significant honor in itself.

McCain, who came off the board No. 16 overall at the 2024 NBA Draft following his sensational Duke basketball campaign, underwent surgery for a left lateral meniscus tear that he sustained in mid-December. Prior to the season-ending injury, the 20-year-old California native averaged 15.3 points, 2.6 assists, and 2.4 assists across 23 appearances, shooting 38.3 percent beyond the arc.

Despite being out of commission for roughly six weeks, McCain continues to lead all rookies with his eight 20-point performances and two 30-point efforts.

Meanwhile, Lively, who was part of the Rising Stars event as a rookie last year, has been sidelined the past two weeks while recovering from a stress fracture in his right ankle. The 20-year-old from Pennsylvania, a former lottery pick, will likely be out until the playoffs.

Through 32 outings this season, Lively is averaging 9.1 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 1.7 blocks.

Duke University has a reputation for producing top-tier basketball talent, and two former Blue Devils who entered the NBA as one-and-done players are continuing to make waves in the professional basketball world.

Zion Williamson and RJ Barrett, both former Duke standouts, have been named Rising Stars by the NBA for their exceptional play in the early stages of their careers. Williamson, the number one overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, has quickly become one of the most electrifying players in the league with his combination of size, athleticism, and skill. Barrett, the third overall pick in the same draft, has shown flashes of brilliance as a versatile scorer and playmaker for the New York Knicks.

Both players spent just one season at Duke before making the leap to the NBA, but their impact on the college basketball world was undeniable. Now, they are proving that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level of professional basketball.

As Duke continues to produce top-tier talent year after year, it’s clear that Williamson and Barrett are just the latest in a long line of Blue Devils who have what it takes to succeed in the NBA. Keep an eye on these rising stars as they continue to make their mark on the basketball world.

  • Iguodala’s No. 9 Warriors jersey retirement a richly deserved honor

Iguodala’s No. 9 Warriors jersey retirement a richly deserved honor originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area

The day will come, surely it must, when a multipart documentary provides comprehensive details behind the rise of the Golden State Warriors. Part I will spotlight the drafting of Stephen Curry, Part II will focus on the vision of resourceful new ownership and Part III will feature the 2012 NBA draft.

Part IV will be devoted to the first player who gave the franchise prestige, something it had not known in a half-century of California history.

When Andre Iguodala agreed to join the Warriors, sacrificing millions he was offered to play elsewhere – this is notable because Iguodala treats every dollar with profound reverence – it marked a new day in the Bay.

    The Warriors were a destination.

That was the first of many significant contributions from Iguodala as the Warriors soared to dynastic heights, and it is among the reasons his No. 9 Golden State jersey is deserving of being retired and raised toward the rafters at Chase Center in a ceremony scheduled for Feb. 23, the Warriors announced on Tuesday, which happened to be Iguodala’s 41st birthday.

“More than anything, if I’m being completely honest, the fans probably played the biggest role in this,” Iguodala says. “They’ve voiced their appreciation of me. The Bay Area is innovative. They understand that you need everything to be functioning at a high level be successful and to have longevity and be able to scale.”

It was after nine seasons with two NBA franchises that Iguodala visualized an extraordinary future with the Warriors and in the summer of 2013 made the calculated decision to hitch a ride.

It was fantasy come to life.

“I never want to gloat. I can properly assess my career, so I don’t need any validation,” Iguodala says. “But I’m taking this one. I think I was the first one to realize how I could extend my career playing with Steph Curry.”

Iguodala chuckles, aware that the statement is both breezy and credible. His decision to join the Warriors cleared a path for them to become champions. It allowed them to dream big enough to believe they could enter the Kevin Durant sweepstakes three years later – and put together a presentation impressive enough to persuade one of the greatest unrestricted free agents in league history to choose Golden State.

After so many decades existing in the NBA outback, ignored by coveted free agents, Iguodala was the first to choose them. After earning respect with a spirited performance in the 2013 NBA playoffs, the Warriors now had taken a giant step toward the goal of every quality professional sports franchise.

The Warriors crept into Iguodala’s mind during the first round of the ’13 playoffs. He was a member of the No. 3 seed Denver Nuggets, who were upset in six games by sixth-seeded Golden State. He was captivated by the glee and audacity with which his opponents conveyed under then-coach Mark Jackson. Iguodala also was charmed by the vociferous enthusiasm inside Oakland’s Oracle Arena.

“I enjoyed the atmosphere in the arena,” he says. “As an opponent, when you enjoy the atmosphere of an opposing [team’s arena], that speaks volumes.”

Iguodala wanted to play for Jackson. Wanted to play with Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, Andrew Bogut, Harrison Barnes, David Lee and, of course, Curry. He had gotten to know them, particularly Curry and Thompson, and understood Jackson’s lofty praise of the gunslinging young guards.

Iguodala started at small forward in his first season with the Warriors (under Jackson) before making another sacrifice that defined his time and value.

When Jackson was dismissed in May 2014, after the Warriors lost to the rival Los Angeles Clippers in a searing seven-game first-round series, Steve Kerr was hired as his replacement. Kerr and Iguodala were familiar with each other, with both having played at the University of Arizona under legendary coach Lute Olson. The two had a conversation early his Kerr’s first season that resulted in a lineup change that supercharged the team.

Recognizing Iguodala’s chameleon-like ability to play most any role that was needed, Kerr wanted the flexibility that comes with him as Golden State’s sixth man. It was a big ask, as Iguodala started all 82 games as a rookie with the Philadelphia 76ers and another 613 in a row over the next eight seasons.

Iguodala accepted the move unenthusiastically. He was willing to go along with this experiment – long as it was successful. The Warriors won their first five games, lost two, and then reeled off a 16-game win streak, then a franchise record at the time. They were 51-31 in Jackson’s last season, 67-15 and NBA Finals champs in Kerr’s rookie campaign.

That was the first of five consecutive trips to the Finals, a run of success foreign to any franchise outside of Boston and Los Angeles – and perhaps even beyond the most ambitious dreams of co-owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber, who led a group that bought the team in 2010.

“I had never been outside the second round,” Iguodala recalls of his thinking upon joining Golden State. “Neither had the Warriors since the ‘70s.

“I don’t speak too far out like that, with those lofty [expectations]. It was just, I don’t know, intuition, playing basketball for quite some time. I didn’t think it would be four. I didn’t think it would be the retirement. I guess the stars were just aligned.”

Iguodala, now 40, was 29 when he joined the Warriors. He was 31 when in 2015 they won their first NBA championship in 40 years – with him earning the Bill Russell Finals MVP award, named for the Boston Celtics Hall of Famer. Curry was the point guard and franchise centerpiece, but he was flanked by a generous collection of talent.

There will be more jersey retirements from the golden era of the Warriors. Curry. Green. Durant. Thompson – who will be at Chase with his current team, the Dallas Mavericks, when Iguodala becomes the first honored with a jersey-retirement ceremony.

“I’m just the oldest; it worked to my benefit in being the first one,” he says. “… I’ve been able to reflect on those guys. Without those guys, I wouldn’t be in this position. I think they understand how important I was. Obviously, Steph, but also Klay and Draymond being so unique in who they are. It’s just a powerful formula.”

Yet Iguodala’s decision to come to the Bay was more complex than projecting an ascending team with dynastic potential. Even before age 30, he was exploring post-career options and perceived the region, with its massive tech sector, would offer investment and networking advantages beyond basketball.

“It was perfect timing,” Iguodala says. “We saw what Steph did. He and I spent a little bit of time together three years prior in the World Championships. And I got to play against Klay a lot in that series; we matched up. He was a young pup, so I beat him up a little bit. But I knew ‘he’s right there.’

“All those things came into play. It was perfect timing, on and off the court. But that atmosphere I just played in in that playoff series, I decided to be there 41 times a year.”

Iguodala is one of 42 players with at least four championship rings and one of 11 with at least four championships and a Finals MVP award. He becomes the seventh player in Warriors history to have his jersey retired, joining Rick Barry (24), Wilt Chamberlain (13), Nate Thurmond (42), Al Attles (16), Chris Mullin (17) and Tom Meschery (14).

The Golden State Warriors announced today that they will be retiring Andre Iguodala’s No. 9 jersey in a special ceremony later this season. This honor is richly deserved for a player who has been an integral part of the Warriors’ success over the past several years.

Iguodala, known for his versatility, defensive prowess, and clutch performances, played a crucial role in the Warriors’ three NBA championships in 2015, 2017, and 2018. His selfless attitude, leadership, and basketball IQ were instrumental in the team’s success, and he will always be remembered as a key member of the Warriors’ dynasty.

Off the court, Iguodala was also known for his philanthropy and community work, making a positive impact both locally and globally. His contributions to the game of basketball and to society as a whole make him a truly deserving candidate for jersey retirement.

Congratulations, Andre Iguodala, on this well-deserved honor. Your legacy with the Warriors will forever be remembered and celebrated. #Warriors #AndreIguodala #JerseyRetirement

  • Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness – The White House

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered:

Section 1.  Purpose and Policy.  It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our Nation and ensure future generations of American citizens celebrate the legacy of our American heroes.  The naming of our national treasures, including breathtaking natural wonders and historic works of art, should honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans in our Nation’s rich past.

Sec. 2.  Appointments to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.  (a)  Within seven days of the date of this order, each agency head with authority to appoint members to the Board on Geographic Names (Board) pursuant to 43 U.S.C. 364a, shall review their respective appointees and consider replacing those appointees in accordance with applicable law.

    (b)  The Secretary of the Interior shall review and consider additional appointments to the Board to assist in fulfilling all aspects of this order, subject to all applicable laws.

    (c)  With respect to all applications for naming and renaming submitted to the newly constituted Board, the Board shall advance the policy established in section 1 of this order to honor the contributions of visionary and patriotic Americans and may update its principles, policies, and procedures as needed to achieve this policy.

    (d)  Where Congressional action is required to establish a renaming in public law, following Board approval on renaming, the Board shall provide guidance to all relevant Federal agencies to use the Board-approved name in the interim in federal documents and achieve consistency across the federal government.

Sec. 3.  Renaming of Mount McKinley.  (a)  President William McKinley, the 25th President of the United States, heroically led our Nation to victory in the Spanish-American War.  Under his leadership, the United States enjoyed rapid economic growth and prosperity, including an expansion of territorial gains for the Nation.  President McKinley championed tariffs to protect U.S. manufacturing, boost domestic production, and drive U.S. industrialization and global reach to new heights.  He was tragically assassinated in an attack on our Nation’s values and our success, and he should be honored for his steadfast commitment to American greatness.

In 1917, the country officially honored President McKinley through the naming of North America’s highest peak.  Yet after nearly a century, President Obama’s administration, in 2015, stripped the McKinley name from federal nomenclature, an affront to President McKinley’s life, his achievements, and his sacrifice.

This order honors President McKinley for giving his life for our great Nation and dutifully recognizes his historic legacy of protecting America’s interests and generating enormous wealth for all Americans.

    (b)  Within 30 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of the Interior shall, consistent with 43 U.S.C. 364 through 364f, reinstate the name “Mount McKinley.”  The Secretary shall subsequently update the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) to reflect the renaming and reinstatement of Mount McKinley.  The national park area surrounding Mount McKinley shall retain the name Denali National Park and Preserve.

    (c)  The Secretary of the Interior shall work with Alaska Native entities and state and local organizations to adopt names for landmarks to honor the history and culture of the Alaskan people.

Sec. 4.  Gulf of America.  (a)  The area formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico has long been an integral asset to our once burgeoning Nation and has remained an indelible part of America.  The Gulf was a crucial artery for America’s early trade and global commerce.  It is the largest gulf in the world, and the United States coastline along this remarkable body of water spans over 1,700 miles and contains nearly 160 million acres.  Its natural resources and wildlife remain central to America’s economy today.  The bountiful geology of this basin has made it one of the most prodigious oil and gas regions in the world, providing roughly 14% of our Nation’s crude-oil production and an abundance of natural gas, and consistently driving new and innovative technologies that have allowed us to tap into some of the deepest and richest oil reservoirs in the world.  The Gulf is also home to vibrant American fisheries teeming with snapper, shrimp, grouper, stone crab, and other species, and it is recognized as one of the most productive fisheries in the world, with the second largest volume of commercial fishing landings by region in the Nation, contributing millions of dollars to local American economies.  The Gulf is also a favorite destination for American tourism and recreation activities.  Further, the Gulf is a vital region for the multi-billion-dollar U.S. maritime industry, providing some of the largest and most impressive ports in the world.  The Gulf will continue to play a pivotal role in shaping America’s future and the global economy, and in recognition of this flourishing economic resource and its critical importance to our Nation’s economy and its people, I am directing that it officially be renamed the Gulf of America.

    (b)  As such, within 30 days of the date of this order, the Secretary of the Interior shall, consistent with 43 U.S.C. 364 through 364f, take all appropriate actions to rename as the “Gulf of America” the U.S. Continental Shelf area bounded on the northeast, north, and northwest by the States of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida and extending to the seaward boundary with Mexico and Cuba in the area formerly named as the Gulf of Mexico.  The Secretary shall subsequently update the GNIS to reflect the renaming of the Gulf and remove all references to the Gulf of Mexico from the GNIS, consistent with applicable law.  The Board shall provide guidance to ensure all federal references to the Gulf of America, including on agency maps, contracts, and other documents and communications shall reflect its renaming.

Sec. 5.  Additional Action.  The Secretary of Interior may solicit public and intergovernmental input regarding additional patriots to honor, particularly in light of America’s semiquincentennial celebration, and shall recommend action to me, through the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy.

Sec. 6.  General Provisions.  (a)  Nothing in this order shall be construed to impair or otherwise affect:

    (i)   the authority granted by law to an executive department or agency, or the head thereof; or

(ii)  the functions of the Director of the Office of Management and Budget relating to budgetary, administrative, or legislative proposals.

    (b)  This order shall be implemented consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations.

    (c)  This order is not intended to, and does not, create any right or benefit, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or in equity by any party against the United States, its departments, agencies, or entities, its officers, employees, or agents, or any other person.

    THE WHITE HOUSE,

        January 20, 2025.

In recent years, there has been a growing movement to restore the names of American landmarks and institutions that honor the greatness of our nation. The White House, one of the most iconic symbols of American democracy, is no exception.

For decades, the White House has stood as a beacon of freedom, democracy, and leadership. Its name represents the values and ideals that make America great. However, in recent years, there have been calls to change the name of the White House to something more politically correct or culturally sensitive.

But changing the name of the White House would be a disservice to the legacy of our founding fathers and the countless men and women who have served our country within its walls. The name “White House” is a reminder of the enduring principles of freedom, equality, and justice that have guided our nation for centuries.

Instead of erasing history, we should embrace it and celebrate the greatness of America. The White House should stand as a reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and leadership that have shaped our nation and continue to inspire us today.

Let us honor American greatness by preserving the name of the White House and all that it represents. Let us continue to uphold the values of freedom, democracy, and leadership that have made America the greatest nation on Earth.
