    Biden to honor Liz Cheney and Bennie Thompson with civilian medal | Joe Biden


    Joe Biden is bestowing the second highest civilian medal on the Democratic congressman, Bennie Thompson, and Republican former congresswoman Liz Cheney who led the bipartisan congressional investigation into the deadly 6 January 2021 insurrection at the US Capitol riot by Donald Trump’s supporters intent on overturning his election defeat by Biden.

    Trump, who takes office again on 20 January after winning last November’s election, has said the leaders of that committee, which published its conclusions in December 2022 after a series of high-profile public hearings, should be jailed, not rewarded.

    Biden, the outgoing US president, will award the Presidential Citizens Medal to 20 people in a ceremony late on Thursday afternoon at the White House.

    As well as the prominent co-chairs of that committee, other recipients include Americans who successfully fought for marriage equality for same-sex couples to become legal.

    There will also be a medal for a pioneer in treating wounded soldiers, and two of the Democratic president’s longtime political allies, the Democratic former US Senators Ted Kaufman of Delaware, the state that Biden represented in the senate, and Chris Dodd of Connecticut.

    “President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others,” the White House said in a statement. “The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice.”

    Biden last year honored people who were involved in defending the US Capitol from the rioters who stormed the building on that January 6, hunting down fleeing lawmakers and invading the House chamber, which moments before had been packed for the ceremony to officially certify Biden’s win over Trump in the 2020 election, or otherwise safeguarded the election result.

    Cheney, who was a Republican representative from Wyoming and is the daughter of former vice-president Dick Cheney, and Thompson, a Mississippi Democratic representative, led the House committee that investigated the insurrection.

    The committee’s final report asserted that Trump criminally engaged in a “multi-part conspiracy” to overturn the lawful results of the election he lost to Biden and failed to act to stop his supporters from attacking the Capitol. Thompson wrote that Trump “lit that fire”.

    Cheney later said she would vote for the Democratic vice-president, Kamala Harris, in the 2024 presidential race and even campaigned with her after being fiercely critical of Trump post-January 6.

    Biden has been considering whether to offer pre-emptive pardons to Cheney and others Trump has targeted.

    Trump still refuses to back away from his lies about the 2020 presidential race and has said he would pardon the rioters once he takes office.

    During an interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump said: “Cheney did something that’s inexcusable, along with Thompson and the people on the un-select committee of political thugs and, you know, creeps,” claiming without evidence they “deleted and destroyed” testimony they collected. “Honestly, they should go to jail,” he said.

    Biden on Thursday is also giving the presidential award to attorney Mary Bonauto, who fought to legalize same-sex marriage, and Evan Wolfson, a leader of the marriage equality movement.

    Other honorees include Frank Butler, who set new standards for using tourniquets on war injuries; Diane Carlson Evans, an army nurse during the Vietnam war who founded the Vietnam Women’s Memorial Foundation; and Eleanor Smeal, an activist who led women’s rights protests in the 1970s and fought for equal pay.

    He is also giving the award to photographer Bobby Sager, academics Thomas Vallely and Paula Wallace, and Frances Visco, the president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition.

    Other former lawmakers being honored include former senator Bill Bradley of New Jersey; former senator Nancy Kassebaum, the first woman to represent Kansas; and former congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy of New York, who championed gun safety measures after her son and husband were shot to death.

    Biden will honor four people posthumously: Joseph Galloway, a former war correspondent who wrote about the first major battle in Vietnam in the book We Were Soldiers Once … and Young; civil rights advocate and attorney Louis Lorenzo Redding; former Delaware state judge Collins Seitz; and Mitsuye Endo Tsutsumi, who was held with other Japanese Americans during the second world war and challenged the detention.

    The Presidential Citizens Medal, created by President Richard Nixon in 1969, is the country’s second highest civilian honor after the presidential medal of freedom. It is awarded to those who “performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens”.

    President Biden will award the Presidential Citizens Medal to former Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., who led the congressional committee that investigated the Jan. 6 , 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

    The Presidential Citizens Medal honors Americans who have performed exemplary deeds of service for their country or their fellow citizens. It is the second-highest civilian honor a president can bestow and awarding it to Cheney and Thompson sends a signal.

    President-elect Trump has criticized the pair repeatedly, falsely accusing them of breaking the law with their investigation into his actions on and around Jan. 6.

    “President Biden believes these Americans are bonded by their common decency and commitment to serving others,” the White House said in a statement. “The country is better because of their dedication and sacrifice.”

    Biden is also set to award the medal to several civil rights leaders and advocates who worked on issues he championed in his career, among others. Among those being honored are two of Biden’s longtime friends, former Sens. Ted Kaufman, D-Del., and Chris Dodd, D-Conn. Bill Bradley, the former Democratic senator from New Jersey, NBA all star, and presidential candidate, is also on the list of honorees.

    In all Biden will award the Citizens Medal to 20 people.

    Last year he awarded 14 people with the medal for their work protecting the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection and for overseeing the 2020 election process despite efforts to overturn the results.

    Cheney was one of two Republicans on the panel that investigated Jan. 6. The panel recommended that Trump be prosecuted by the Department of Justice on four charges: obstruction of an official proceeding; conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to make a false statement; and conspiracy to defraud the U.S. by assisting, aiding or comforting those involved in an insurrection.

    Trump, who takes office Jan. 20, has said he’d pardon some of those convicted in connection with the Jan. 6 riot. He has repeatedly dismissed the findings of the Jan. 6 committee and attacked Cheney on social media.

    The Philadelphia 76ers are finally starting to make noise. While they certainly do not deserve much accalim given that they still have a lot of ctaching up to do, it would be highly ignorant to simply toss them aside as the biggest disappointment of 2024 without also acknowledging the fact that they are trending in the right direction while overcoming adversity after adversity.

    A major catalyst to their much improved play as of late is Tyrese Maxey. Following a slow start to the season just a season after bagging the Most Improved Player award in 2023-24, he is starting to turn his personal campaign around and show everyone why he was expected and poised to make the jump to superstardom.

    In his last eight games, Maxey has registered 29.3 points and seven assists per outing on 45.1 percent shooting from the field, including a blistering 41 percent conversion rate from rainbow country on pretty high volume. Even more importantly, even with Joel Embiid back at the helm, Maxey has emerged as the 76ers’ resident closer, carrying the team on his back in clutch situations.

    Maxey is slowly making his case to make the All-Star team anew on February, but to be quite frank, that is already the floor with him at this point in his career. To legitimize his leap, he has to aim higher, and that necessarily includes making the All-NBA Teams at the end of the season.

    The NBA has moved away from positions therein, but nevertheless, Maxey faces pretty stiff competition to make the exlusive team,. Having said that, Luka Doncic, a fixture in the All-NBA Team, has now been effectively disqualified from making it thanks to a calf injury that would sideline him for at least a month, meaning that Maxey will have one less major competitor to worry about.

    Of course, it would still take a ton for Maxey to make the list, but there are pathways to make that possible. Catalyzing a big leap from the 76ers in the standings would make for a good start to mount a legitimate bid for a spot, and if he continues to play at the level he has been in recently, he should be in serious consideration to make an All-NBA Team for the first time in his young career.

    The Philadelphia 76ers don’t really have the luxury of pondering on individual accolades right now, but getting Tyrese Maxey’s rewarded for his steady ascent would be a nice cherry on top for what could be an eventful season for the franchise.

    US stock markets to remain closed in honor of Jimmy Carter on National Day of Mourning


    NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock markets will remain closed on Jan. 9 in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, continuing a long-held Wall Street tradition in mourning the nation’s leaders.

    Both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq announced this week that they plan to close their equity and options markets next Thursday in observance of a National Day of Mourning for the 39th U.S. president and global humanitarian. Carter died on Sunday at his home in Plains, Georgia. He was 100 years old.

    The Nasdaq also observed a moment of silence early Monday in remembrance Carter. And the NYSE says it will fly its U.S. flag at half-staff throughout the mourning period of the late president.

    Tal Cohen, Nasdaq president, said in a statement that the exchange would be closing its markets Jan. 9 “to celebrate (Carter’s) life and honor his legacy.” He added that Carter “was an exemplary leader, one who tirelessly continued his efforts to improve the human condition even after his tenure in public office was complete.”

    In a separate announcement, NYSE Group president Lynn Martin also pointed to Carter’s “enduring legacy of humanitarianism” and said the exchange planned to honor his lifetime of service.

    President Joe Biden declared Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning shortly after Carter’s death on Sunday, which is customary following the passing of an American president. Wall Street also has a tradition of paying homage to the nation’s late leaders and closed their doors on these designated days.

    Surviving records from the NYSE indicate that the first time the centuries-old exchange closed to honor a deceased president was likely April 15, 1865 — following the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln, the NYSE confirmed to The Associated Press Tuesday, and it remained closed until April 21, 1865. Trading was again suspended once on April 24th and 25th of that year, when Lincoln’s funeral procession reached New York.

    In the years that followed, the NYSE also closed to honor other U.S. presidents including, but not limited to, the national days of mourning for President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945, President John F. Kennedy in 1963, President Richard Nixon in 1994 and President Ronald Reagan in 2004.

    The last time both the NYSE and Nasdaq, which was formed in 1971, closed trading due to the death of a U.S. president was Dec. 5, 2018, honoring the late President George H.W. Bush.

    While closures are rare on non-holidays, the NYSE and the Nasdaq have also suspended trading for the deaths of other notable figures and national tragedies over the years. According to CNBC and Bloomberg, the NYSE closed following the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. And both the NYSE and Nasdaq canceled trading following the terror attacks on September 11, 2001, remaining closed until Sept. 17, 2001.





    On December 4th, 2022, the US stock markets will remain closed in honor of former President Jimmy Carter on the National Day of Mourning. President Carter passed away at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy of public service and humanitarian efforts.

    During his presidency from 1977 to 1981, President Carter was known for his commitment to human rights, diplomacy, and environmental conservation. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his work in promoting peace and democracy around the world.

    In recognition of his contributions to the country and the world, the US stock markets will be closed on this day to allow investors and employees to pay their respects and reflect on President Carter’s legacy.     Biden closes government in honor of Jimmy Carter


    Following the death of former President Jimmy Carter, President Biden on Monday signed an executive order closing all executive departments and agencies of the federal government on Jan. 9.

    The closures, which Biden described as a “mark of respect” for the 39th president, will be in effect on the day of the late former president’s funeral.

    Carter will lie in state in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. and his funeral will take place at Washington National Cathedral, according to statements from the White House and Carter Center.

    Biden signed a proclamation on Sunday, declaring Jan. 9 as a National Day of Mourning and ordering all American flags to fly at half-staff for the next 30 days.

    Carter, whose family owned a peanut farm in Plains, Georgia, attended the United States Naval Academy and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific fleets. 

    He was later elected state senator, Georgia’s 76th governor and president of the United States — playing key roles in the creation of the modern Department of Education and the Department of Energy, conservation efforts, and nuclear nonproliferation.

    Gonzaga to honor Domantas Sabonis in pregame ceremony


    The Gonzaga men’s basketball program is set to honor two-time All-NBA forward Domantas Sabonis in a pregame ceremony on Jan. 18, when the Bulldogs host Santa Clara at the McCarthey Athletic Center.

    Sabonis’ No. 11, which he wore throughout his two seasons in Spokane, will hang among an exclusive group of former men’s basketball players who have their jerseys displayed along the upper walls of the Kennel. He’s set to join Frank Burgess (No. 44), John Stockton (No. 12), Adam Morrison (No. 3), Kelly Olynyk (No. 13) and Dan Dickau (No. 21).

    Sabonis remains Gonzaga’s all-time leader in career field goal percentage (63.2%) and ranks No. 11 in program history with 694 rebounds. The 6-foot-11 Lithuanian scored over 1,000 points in just 74 games.

    While guiding the Zags on a run to the Sweet 16 in 2016, Sabonis was named an Associated Press All-American honorable mention and an NCAA All-Tournament Midwest Region selection. As a sophomore in the 2015-16 season, he averaged 17.6 points per game and led the West Coast Conference with 11.8 rebounds per game (sixth-best nationally) and 23 double-doubles (fifth-best nationally).

    Sabonis was the 11th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic, who immediately traded his draft rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder. It wasn’t long before he was part of another trade, this time a blockbuster during the 2017 offseason that sent Indiana Pacers forward Paul George to OKC in exchange for Victor Oladipo and Sabonis, the latter of whom averaged 5.9 points as a rookie. In Indiana, Sabonis elevated his game to All-Star status over four full seasons and had a career-best 20.3 points per game in the 2020-21 campaign.

    Sabonis was involved in another massive deal, this time at the 2022 trade deadline, as the Pacers moved him to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for rising superstar guard Tyrese Haliburton.

    Kings coach Mike Brown’s free-flowing offense unlocked the superb playmaking aspect of Sabonis’ game in no time. Alongside De’Aaron Fox, Sabonis helped the Kings reach the postseason for the first time in 16 years during his first full season with the team in 2022-23, as he took home All-NBA Third Team honors and finished seventh in MVP votes. Sacramento couldn’t make it back-to-back playoff appearances with a ninth-place finish in the Western Conference standings in 2023-24, though Sabonis still put up historic numbers and was All-NBA once again. 

    Sabonis is the son of Naismith Basketball Hall-of-Fame center Arvydas Sabonis, who thrived with the Portland Trail Blazers in the late 1990s after years of dominating overseas in Spain. Domantas, born in Portland, was the youngest member of Unicaja Malaga (Spain) at 18 years old but refused to sign a contract due to his desire to play college basketball. Gonzaga came in with the recruiting pitch, and the rest is history.

    Sabonis changed his number with the Kings from No. 10 to No. 11 this past offseason, as a nod to his father’s basketball legacy and his own ties to the number. His daughter Eleven was born on July 11; he wore No. 11 during his two seasons at Gonzaga before being selected, coincidentally, 11th overall in the 2016 NBA Draft.

    SPOKANE, Wash. – Three-time NBA All-Star Domantas Sabonis will be honored by Gonzaga Athletics on Jan. 18 during a ceremony at GU’s game against Santa Clara.
     
    Sabonis, who will become the sixth player in men’s program history to have his jersey displayed in the McCarthey Athletic Center, will be present for the ceremony. He will join Frank Burgess, John Stockton, Adam Morrison, Kelly Olynyk, and Dan Dickau among those with their jersey numbers hung in the arena.
     
    Sabonis remains Gonzaga’s all-time leader in career field goal percentage at .632. In just two seasons, he scored 1,002 points to become the 41st player in school history to score 1,000 points. He also grabbed 694 rebounds, which is 11th all-time at GU.
     
    An AP Honorable Mention All-American and NCAA All-Tournament Midwest Region selection, Sabonis capped his fantastic season helping the Zags reach the Sweet 16 in 2016. Off the court, he was named a CoSIDA Second Team Academic All-American, CoSIDA Academic All-District first-teamer and a WCC All-Academic first-teamer.
     
    Sabonis, who also earned All-West Coast Conference and NABC All-District First Team honors, averaged 17.6 points per game in 2015-16, and led the WCC with 11.8 rebounds per game (No. 6 nationally) and 23 double-doubles (No. 5 nationally). He ranked second in the league with a .611 field goal percentage. Sabonis scored in double figures 32 times and had 20-plus in 12 of those contests.
     
    In the NCAA Tournament, Sabonis helped Gonzaga reach a Sweet 16 in each of his two seasons with an Elite 8 appearance in 2015. In the three 2016 NCAA Tournament games, he averaged 19.7 points and 14.3 rebounds, the highest rebounding average of any player that appeared in at least two games.
     
    As a freshman, Sabonis shot 66.8 percent from the field, appearing in all 38 games in 2014-15. He averaged 9.7 points and 7.1 rebounds.
     
    Sabonis was selected the 11th pick of the 2016 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. Following the selection, the Magic traded Sabonis to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He became the sixth Zag drafted in the first round, and 20th selected in the NBA Draft.
     
    Sabonis was an NBA All-Star in 2020, 2021, and 2023. He was named Third Team All-NBA in each of the last two seasons, after leading the league in rebounds in both 2022-23 and 2023-24.
     
    In his ninth season in the NBA, Sabonis currently averages 21.4 points for the Sacramento Kings. He’s pulling down 13 rebounds per outing, which ranks second in the league. His 62.2 field goal percentage is fourth in the NBA.
     
    Sabonis played for Lithuania at EuroBasket 2015, winning a silver medal in his debut year for the national team. He also was a member of the Lithuanian Olympic national team during the 2016 Summer Olympics.
