Cornell women’s basketball faces Princeton on January 25, aiming to end a four-game losing streak. The team holds a disappointing 4-13 record overall and is yet to win in the Ivy League, dropping recent games to Penn and Brown. Under new head coach Emily Garner, who previously led Trinity College, the Big Red has struggled, currently sitting last in the Ivy League standings. The matchup marks their 89th meeting, with Princeton leading the series 67-21 and extending a 14-game winning streak over Cornell.
By the Numbers
- Cornell’s current season record: 4-13 (0-4 Ivy League)
- Big Red’s last home win was on November 27, 2024, over Mercyhurst by one point in overtime.
- Princeton leads the all-time series 67-21.
Yes, But
Despite their current struggles, the Big Red has showed resilience, competing closely in games with multiple lead changes. Their recent match against Brown highlighted issues with turnovers, but also showcased strong rebounding efforts. These factors indicate both challenges and potential for improvement.
State of Play
- Cornell struggles with turnovers, posting 19 in their last game against Brown.
- Despite the losses, Emily Pape continues to lead the team in scoring with 11.7 points per game.
- Head coach Emily Garner is still seeking her second Ivy League win.
What’s Next
A victory against Princeton would not only enhance Cornell’s record to 5-13 but also break the long-standing losing streak against the Tigers. The Big Red expects to leverage home court advantage as they try to regroup and build momentum in the Ivy League.
Bottom Line
For Cornell, clinching a win against Princeton is crucial not just for team morale but to establish a foothold in the Ivy League and set a new tone for the remainder of the season. Consistency and reduced turnovers will be key to reversing their fortunes against a strong Princeton squad.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — No. 3 Notre Dame (16-2, 7-0) will play the first of three consecutive road games starting Thursday, as the Irish head to Chestnut Hill to play Boston College (12-8, 3-4).
The Irish have won 11 consecutive games dating back to Dec. 5, and the offense is beginning to fire on all cylinders with both Maddy Westbeld and Hannah Hidalgo back in the starting lineup.
After missing two games against Clemson and Georgia Tech with an ankle sprain, Hidalgo returned to the court Sunday night against SMU and recorded 23 points and 10 rebounds, her third double-double of the season. Front court mate Olivia Miles also had a double-double, notching 17 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists. It was the 25th double-double of her storied career. No other Notre Dame guard has had more than 17.
Notre Dame continues to dominate the national rankings as a team. The Irish rank in the top 10 in the country in scoring offense and rebounds, assists and blocks per game. Notre Dame also leads the nation with a 41.3 success rate from beyond the arc, led by Miles who is shooting 44.8 percent from deep, a more than 20 percent increase from her average over the first three years of her career.
The Eagles are winners of back-to-back ACC games, edging Miami by 4 points last Thursday and dominating Syracuse by 41 on Sunday. Four Boston College players scored in double figures in the win, including 22 points from veteran Dontavia Waggoner and 21 from Teya Sidberry. The Eagles knocked down 10 triples after 12 against Miami, marking the first time since 2019 that they had 10 or more 3-pointers in back-to-back games. That charge against Syracuse was led by T’yana Todd, who went 4-5 from deep.
On the season, Boston College sits in the middle of the ACC in both scoring offense (ninth) and scoring defense (11th). They do an excellent job passing the ball, averaging 16.5 assists per game (fourth). Kaylah Ivey ranks second in the conference with 6.1 assists per game, trailing only Miles (7.1). Brice Williams G Sr. 6-7/214 Shot just 6-of-14 from the field but finished with 14 points, four rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the loss to Maryland. Juwan Gary F Sr. 6-6/226 Scored six points on 3-9 shooting with seven rebounds at Maryland. He eclipsed 1,000 career points in the loss. Berke Buyuktuncel F So. 6-10/224 Scored eight points on 3-of-5 shooting, including going 2-for-2 on 3-pointers, with four rebounds in Nebraska’s loss at Maryland. Braxton Meah F Sr. 7-1/264 He only played a season-low 3:46 in the loss at Maryland, recording just two rebounds without a shot attempt. USC projected starters
Saint Thomas G Sr. 6-7/235 Former Millard North standout who averages 11.0
points and leads USC with 4.1 assists, 6.1 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game.Desmond Claude G Jr. 6-6/201 He leads USC in scoring at 16.0 points per game while dishing out 4.1 assists per game. 7.8 points with 2.4 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.3 keys to victory
Solve the 3-point defense
For Nebraska to beat USC or anyone else on its schedule, it must figure out its defensive issues on the perimeter. The Huskers have been torched from behind the arc during their four-game losing streak, giving up 58 made 3-pointers (14.5 per game) at a blistering 47.5% clip. Head coach Fred Hoiberg insists that it’s not as much of a schematic issue as it is his players needing better defensive effort and intensity. That means NU’s close-outs must be aggressive, the rotations must be crisp, and the intensity must be elite for a full 40 minutes. If not, the Trojans – which shoot a solid 35.2% from three – will light Nebraska up once again.
Stop giving the ball away
Nebraska turned it over 13 times last time out at Maryland, an OK-but-not-great number. Only four of those came in the second half, but sloppy ball handling early again caused the Huskers problems out of the gate. Turnovers have been an issue for NU all season, as it now ranks 186th nationally in offensive turnover rate. Nebraska’s goal each game is to finish with 10 or fewer giveaways. It’s accomplished that just four times through 18 games this season, including averaging nearly 13 turnovers over its four-game losing streak. Something to watch tonight is how much the Huskers go back to a two-point guard lineup with Rollie Worster and Ahron Ulis on the floor together. NU utilized that look in the second half at Maryland and significantly improved its handling of the Terrapins’ on-ball pressure.
Be the aggressor
Hoiberg described USC as a bunch of guys who were “all the same,” and he meant it as a compliment. The Trojans’ roster is full of tall, strong, and athletic players at all five positions, giving them physicality and versatility no matter who is on the court. However, USC still has issues with opponents who throw the first punches. The Trojans rank 17th in the Big Ten in rebounding (32.3 rpg) and dead last in offensive boards (8.1 orpg). They also commit 17.6 fouls per game (fifth-most in the conference) to allow foes to score 20.6% of their points at the free-throw line. If Nebraska can crash the glass on both ends and attack the rim on offense, it could control the boards, extend and finish possessions, and cash in at the charity stripe. There’s no better formula to end a losing streak than that.
Quotable
“It’s all out there right now. We went from being in a really good situation and a really good position to still having our goals right in front of us. A lot of teams have gone through three, four-game losing streaks in this league. It happens. You got to respond. You got to keep going out there, and one thing I really liked about the last game was I thought our defensive edge was back, and that has to be our constant.”
Head coach Fred Hoiberg on Nebraska needing to get its season back on track through defense and toughness.
Prediction
Nebraska (-4.5) 77, USC 68
Robin’s season record: 15-2
Vs. the spread: 8-9

Latest On Cameron Johnson | Hoops Rumors
January 18th 2025 at 1:28pm CST by Luke Adams
Confirming recent reporting from ESPN, Jake Fischer writes at The Stein Line (Substack link) that Brooklyn’s asking price for forward Cameron Johnson is indeed high and that the team doesn’t feel compelled to move him by February 6.
According to Fischer, in their conversations with certain teams about Johnson, the Nets have sought as many as two first-round picks to go along with a young player. It remains to be seen whether any team will meet that price. If not, the question will be whether Brooklyn ultimately decides to make an in-season deal for a slightly more modest return or opts to hang onto Johnson into the offseason.
Here are a few more updates from Fischer on one of the NBA’s top trade candidates:
- Following up on a report from The Athletic identifying the Cavaliers as a team with interest in trading for Johnson, Fischer says that interest appears “preliminary at best.” While Fischer confirms that Cleveland inquired on Johnson, he’s not sure the Cavs have the assets to appeal to Brooklyn, since they can only trade one first-round pick and it wouldn’t convey until 2031. People around the league believe the Cavs are more likely to make a minor move that reduces their luxury tax bill, Fischer notes.
- Fischer is prepared to cross the Thunder off of the list of suitors for Johnson after having reported himself last month that Oklahoma City was keeping an eye on the Nets sharpshooter. While there’s still some chatter around the league about the potential fit between Johnson and OKC, there has been no “credible evidence” that the Thunder have talked to Brooklyn about a deal, Fischer explains. Like the Cavaliers, the Thunder seem reluctant to make a significant move that shakes up their roster and risks disrupting their chemistry, given their success so far this season, Fischer adds.
- The Pacers and Kings are among the teams to continue to watch as possible suitors for Johnson. One Western Conference executive who spoke to Fischer believes a Sacramento package of Kevin Huerter, Trey Lyles, and a first-round pick is viewed by some people around the league as the early benchmark to beat. That doesn’t necessarily mean the Nets would accept that offer if it’s the best one they have at the deadline, but it sounds like it might be the best one they have so far.
Cameron Johnson, the sharpshooting forward for the Phoenix Suns, has been making waves in the NBA with his impressive performances. Johnson has been a key player for the Suns this season, providing valuable scoring and outside shooting. In his latest game, Johnson scored a career-high 26 points, including six three-pointers, in a win against the Golden State Warriors. His shooting ability has been a major factor in the Suns’ success this season, as he is shooting over 40% from beyond the arc.
Johnson’s development has been a pleasant surprise for the Suns, who acquired him in a draft-day trade in 2019. He has quickly become a fan favorite in Phoenix, with his smooth shooting stroke and high basketball IQ.
As the Suns continue their quest for a playoff spot, Cameron Johnson will be a key player to watch. His ability to stretch the floor and knock down shots will be crucial for the team’s success in the postseason.
Stay tuned for more updates on Cameron Johnson and the Phoenix Suns as they make their playoff push.

South Carolina has so far cruised through the difficult part of its conference schedule and remained No. 2 in the Associated Press Top 25 women’s basketball poll Monday, picking up a first-place vote to gain a bit of ground on top-ranked UCLA.
The Gamecocks are in the midst of a five-game stretch against ranked opponents. So far, they’ve beaten Texas by 17, Alabama by 18 and Oklahoma by 41 on Sunday. They face No. 5 LSU on Thursday and No. 17 Tennessee on Jan. 27.
UCLA received 27 first-place ballots this week while No. 3 Notre Dame got the other two. USC remained No. 4.
After LSU were UConn, Texas and Maryland — the Longhorns faced the Terrapins later Monday in the Coretta Scott King Classic — and TCU and Kansas State moved up to ninth and 10th, respectively, after losses by Ohio State and Oklahoma. The Wildcats were awaiting word on star center Ayoka Lee, who was injured in Sunday’s win over Arizona State.
Odds and ends
-
Tennessee lost at Vanderbilt for the first time since 2014.
-
Penn State topped Ohio State for its first win over a ranked team since February 2021.
-
Michigan reentered the poll at No. 24.
Conference breakdown
The Southeastern Conference and Big Ten each have seven teams ranked this week, with the ACC right behind with six. With Utah and Oklahoma State dropping out, the Big 12 is down to four teams and the Big East one.
Ranked Bears
Baylor entered the poll for the first time since the third week of the season. The Bears have won five straight, including a victory over then-No. 23 Utah last week. Nicki Collen’s squad has a difficult week coming up with a matchup against No. 1 UCLA later Monday in the Coretta Scott King Classic. The Bears then visit No. 9 TCU on Sunday.
Games of the week
No. 5 LSU at No. 2 South Carolina, Thursday. The undefeated Tigers will try to knock off the Gamecocks in a matchup of two of the best teams in the SEC.
No. 8 Maryland at No. 12 Ohio State, Thursday. The Buckeyes will look to bounce back from their first loss of the season when they host the Terrapins. Maryland also hosts No. 1 UCLA on Sunday.
South Carolina closes gap on No. 1 UCLA in AP women’s hoops pollIn the latest AP women’s basketball poll, South Carolina has made significant strides in closing the gap on top-ranked UCLA. The Gamecocks have been on a tear in recent weeks, picking up impressive wins and solidifying their position as a top contender in women’s college basketball.
South Carolina’s rise in the rankings can be attributed to their strong performances on both ends of the court. Led by standout players such as Aliyah Boston and Zia Cooke, the Gamecocks have showcased their defensive prowess and offensive firepower, proving to be a force to be reckoned with.
With UCLA holding onto the top spot for now, South Carolina is hot on their heels and poised to potentially take over the No. 1 ranking in the near future. The Gamecocks’ continued success and determination have not gone unnoticed, and they are undoubtedly a team to watch as the season progresses.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the season unfolds and if South Carolina can overtake UCLA as the new No. 1 team in women’s college basketball. Stay tuned for more updates and exciting matchups in the world of women’s hoops.

Hoops: Sooners beat South Carolina, secure first SEC win
Hoops: Sooners beat South Carolina, secure first SEC win
NORMAN — Oklahoma was locked into yet another slugfest on Saturday against South Carolina.
Despite a poor offensive first half, where the Sooners scored just 34 points and committed 11 turnovers, Porter Moser’s squad clung to a 59-54 lead with 7:23 left in the game. But considering the stakes, and the Sooners at risk of falling to 0-5 in conference play, they needed a spark.
They got it.
Jalon Moore was fouled on back-to-back trips, making 3-of-4 free throw attempts. Jeremiah Fears then found Mohamed Wague for an alley-oop dunk, and Moore followed that up with a layup.
With 4:05 to go, Fears found Kobe Elvis for the dagger 3-pointer that punctuated a 15-0 run, putting the Sooners up 18 points.
It was a scoring flurry the Sooners desperately needed, as they rode that momentum to a 82-62 win at the Lloyd Noble Center.
It wasn’t the prettiest win, but it was a game the Sooners had to win to avoid falling to the bottom of the SEC standings. They improved to 14-4 on the season and 1-4 in SEC play.
“The understatement of the year is how bad we needed that,” Moser said. “To get that narrative of getting the first one out of the way and getting our confidence back up to play winning basketball. You’re going to have tons of opportunities in this league.
“We needed to log that first (win) so we could move forward.”
Box score via OUstats NOTES
— Moore continues to be super aggressive offensively, and the Sooners needed that against the Gamecocks. He finished with a game-high 22 points on an efficient 6-of-10 shooting performance, adding eight rebounds. He’s also been good at getting to the free throw line, making 10-of-11 attempts.
This comes just a few days after Moore scored a career-high 29 points against Texas, with 26 of those points coming in the second half.
— Turnovers threatened to again doom the Sooners. They committed 11 in the first half. But they cleaned that up in the second half, committing just one.
The thing that helped? South Carolina were just as bad at taking care of the ball, committing 12 of its 17 turnovers in the first half. The Sooners also won the points-off-turnover battle 19-3.
“I think that’s the narrative of this team,” Moser said. “It was better winning basketball. It’s been a theme for us these last two days. We had an old school company mission statement: We need to play better winning basketball to win games. I thought we had 11 (turnovers) in the first half, and we talked about: How many were unforced? Just dribbling too deep.
“We really took care of it in the second half. Just way more urgency.”
— After being out of the rotation the first three SEC games, Dayton Forsythe got some minutes in both halves. The true freshman came into the game at the 13:20 mark of the first half and drilled a jumper 14 seconds later.
He made one of the biggest plays of the game midway through the second half, hitting a deep trailing 3-pointer with 8:14 on the clock that pushed Oklahoma’s lead to eight.
This comes after Forsythe gave the Sooners a spark in the second half of Wednesday’s loss against Texas.
Forsythe finished the game with five points, two rebounds and an assist, and again provided effort plays on both ends. He’s likely earned a spot in the rotation moving forward.
“After last game, we talked about it, and we all felt like, why do anything different than we did the last 15 minutes of the Texas game?” Forsythe said. “I feel like today we did that. We played like the last 15 minutes and we gave everything we had, and the result was the result.”
— This marked the second game with the Sooners’ new starting lineup, with Brycen Goodine in place of Kobe Elvis.
The results were mixed against Texas, but it paid off against the Gamecocks. Goodine made two 3-pointers, while Elvis scored 12 points with four 3-pointers off the bench.
— Jeremiah Fears was great as the Sooners’ primary playmaker and nearly finished with a triple double, finishing with 16 points, nine rebounds and a career-high eight assists.
Fears’ jumper has remained inconsistent, finishing 5-of-12 from the field and 0-of-4 from the 3-point line, and that’s held him back from being OU’s primary scoring engine. But the playmaking and all-around play has been there.
— The Sooners made 18-of-11 free throw attempts, while the Gamecocks made just 11-of-21.
The Gamecocks’ struggles were a big reason why the Sooners won the game.
Up next: The Sooners have a bye week before traveling to Arkansas on Saturday.

Nebraska projected starters
Rollie Worster G Sr. 6-5/210 Ended up with 10 points, seven rebounds, and five
assists to finish with a team-best +/- of 14 in the loss to Rutgers. He also shot 8-10 at the free-throw line.Brice Williams G Sr. 6-7/214 Scored a team-high 21 points in the loss to Rutgers. He’s averaging 18.9 ppg on the season while shooting a career-high 48.5% from the field and 40 percent on 3-pointers. Juwan Gary F Sr. 6-6/226 Finished with 20 points in the loss to Rutgers, two shy of matching his career high. That marked his 11th double-figure scoring effort of the year and second 20-point game. Berke Buyuktuncel F So. 6-10/224 Held scoreless on 0-4 shooting with two assists, two turnovers, and four fouls over his 21 minutes of work against Rutgers. His +/- of 10 still ranked second on the team. Braxton Meah F Sr. 7-1/264 He made all three of his shot attempts to finish with six points, six rebounds, and a blocked shot over 17 minutes of work in the loss to Rutgers. Maryland projected starters
Ja’Kobi Gillespie G Jr. 6-1/186 Belmont transfer who is averaging 13.9 ppg on 47 percent shooting, including 41 percent from 3-point range. He also leads UMD with 4.3 apg) and 1.7 spg. Rodney Rice G So. 6-4/198 He’s scoring 12.4 points per game while ranking second on the team with 2.4 assists per game this season. Selton Miguel G Sr. 6-4/217 He’s averaging 11.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game while starting all 18 contests for Maryland this season. Julian Reese F Sr. 6-9/252 All-Big Ten selection who is averaging 13.2 ppg on 58
percent shooting and leads Maryland in rebounding (8.7
rpg) and blocked shots (1.3 bpg).Derik Queen C Fr. 6-10/246 A true freshman who leads Maryland in scoring with 15.8 ppg on 56 percent shooting while hauling in 8.1 rebounds per game. 3 keys to victory
Defend the 3
It really doesn’t matter who Nebraska is playing – the Huskers’ 3-point defense has become a critical concern over its three-game losing streak. Iowa (17), Purdue (19), and Rutgers (12) combined to hit a whopping 48 threes. That’s 16.0 made 3-pointers per game. Head coach Fred Hoiberg said after the Rutgers loss that it wasn’t a schematic issue but that his team needed to defend the perimeter with better effort and consistency. To prevent today from becoming a repeat performance, Nebraska better be locked in with its close-outs, rotations, and contests from start to finish. Maryland comes in ranked fifth in the Big Ten, shooting at a 35.9% clip from behind the arc. Again, the opponent won’t matter if NU cannot make life more difficult on teams from deep. The Huskers currently rank 358th out of 364 Division I teams, with 49.8% of their opponent scoring coming off 3-pointers.
Battle on the boards
One area that has made Maryland such a tough matchup this season is how effective the Terrapins have been on the glass this season. UMD ranks fifth in the Big Ten in rebounding (37.3 rpg) out-rebounds its opponents by more than five rebounds per game. Big men Julian Reese (fifth, 8.7 rpg) and Derik Queen (seventh, 8.1) rank among the Big Ten’s top rebounders, with Reese tied for first in the league with 3.2 offensive boards per game. The Huskers just gave up 17 offensive rebounds for 19 second-chance points against Rutgers. If they can’t finish defensive possessions with strong rebounding, it could be another long day on the defensive end.
How much do you want it?
Ace Bailey’s voice better still echo through the heads of every Nebraska player today at Maryland. The Scarlet Knights’ stellar freshman called the Huskers out repeatedly during Thursday night’s game, yelling, “We want it more than them!” Juwan Gary said that added salt to the Huskers’ wounds. It also forced them to look into the mirror after a third consecutive Big Ten defeat. For NU to get its season back on track, it must play like the team that wants it more. In two of their past three losses (Iowa and Rutgers), they’ve left feeling like they were the better team. They just didn’t finish the job. Today’s game will measure what this team is all about. Their effort and intensity at Maryland will say plenty about the chances of getting this train back on the tracks.
Quotable
“That’s all I kept hearing Ace Bailey say tonight. ‘We want it more.’ That hurt as a player. I know no team wants it more than my guys, for sure. But they proved it today.”
Senior forward Juwan Gary on Rutgers’ star Ace Bailey’s comments during Nebraska’s loss on Thursday night.
Prediction
Maryland (-9.5) 81, Nebraska 71
Robin’s season record: 14-2
Vs. the spread: 8-8

Men’s Hoops Set to Face UNLV on Saturday at Viejas
SAN DIEGO – Facing off for the first time since a thrilling 74-71 overtime win for San Diego State in the quarterfinal round of the 2024 Mountain West Tournament, the Aztecs and Runnin’ Rebels renew their rivalry on Saturday at Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena.
OFF THE BOUNCE
San Diego State and UNLV are set to meet for the 83rd time on Saturday evening at Steve Fisher Court at Viejas Arena, with San Diego State holding a 44-38 advantage in the all-time series, including 40-12 in the Mountain West era. With its 75-60 win over Colorado State in its last game, the Aztecs are 35-4 in their last 39 games immediately following a loss, which includes a loss at the end of a season and a win in the opening game of the following campaign. In situations where a loss is followed immediately by a home game, San Diego State is 37-1 in its last 38 games.
In the Aztecs win over Colorado State (Jan. 14) sophomore scored a career-high 25 points, including five 3-pointers, grabbed six rebounds and had seven steals. He is the first player in Mountain West history to have a game with those numbers and just the third in the nation in the last 16 years.
In its 14 Division I games, San Diego State has held eight opponents to their worst shooting game of the season and for three of the remaining six, they had their 2nd worst field goal percentage games.
San Diego State, No. 3 & No. 9, and Tennessee, No. 2 and No. 1, are the only teams in the nation ranked in the top-10 in both field goal and 3-point field goal percentage defense, respectively.
San Diego State’s defense was particularly stingy against the Colorado State bench. The Aztecs held the Rams bench scoreless until there was 5:56 to play in the game and held CSU’s extras to just 2 points, on a pair of free throws. It was the fewest bench points allowed since its game against New Mexico in the championship of the 2024 Mountain West Tournament, when it surrendered one point. The fewest bench points allowed before that was zero vs. Creighton in the Elite Eight on March 26, 2023.
San Diego State is No. 1 in the Mountain West and No. 3 in the nation in field goal percentage defense at 35.9 percent from the floor, and is one of two programs that is limiting opponents to a combined maximum of 35.9 percent from the floor and 28.0 percent from beyond the arc. The Aztecs are No. 1 in the Mountain West and No. 9 in the country in 3-point field goal percentage defense (.280).
San Diego State has eight victories in their last 10 games. In those eight wins, SDSU is shooting .434 from the field, including .347 from the bonus distance, and is averaging 75.1 points per game, with an average margin of victory of 15.1 points. Defensively, in those games, the team limited its opponents to a .347 shooting percentage, including .276 from beyond the arc and for the season has limited the opposition to 35.9 percent shooting overall, which ranks No. 3 nationally.
Halfway through the season, San Diego State is once again trending as one of the nation’s best in defense. After the games of January 15, according to KenPom, the Aztecs are 2nd in block percentage, No. 6 in adjusted defensive efficiency, No. 7 in effective field goal percentage defense, and No. 11 in both 2-point and 3-point percentage defense.
The Aztecs showed California what stifling defense looks like back on December 21, in holding a Golden Bears team that shot 47.5 percent from the floor coming into the game to just 25.5 percent, Cal’s fourth worst shooting game in the last 30 years. SDSU also limited Cal, a 38.1 percent shooting team from the bonus distance to 20.8 percent.
San Diego State leads the Mountain West with 5.73 blocked shots per game and is No. 7 in the nation. San Diego State has received 41 of its 86 blocks this year (47.7 percent) from freshman Magoon Gwath, who is No. 8 in the nation (2.73/g).
Freshman Magoon Gwath ranks No. 8 in the nation in blocks per game (2.73) and No. 4 Kenpom’s block percentage and No. 10 in total blocks (41). Gwath has a triumvirate of five block games: vs. No. 3 Gonzaga, No. 6 Houston & Oregon.
The Aztecs have held 10 of their 15 Division I opponents to less than 40 percent shooting, seven games of less than 35.0 percent, three under 30.0 percent. SDSU limited California to just 25.5 percent shooting on Dec. 21, the third lowest opponent field goal percentage shooting night in the Brian Dutcher era.
Freshman wing Magoon Gwath enjoyed a 25-point, 10-rebound and four-block game in the team’s 84-62 win at Fresno State on December 4. He became the first Aztec freshman to have a game of at least 25 points and 10 rebounds since Kawhi Leonard totaled 25 and 12 against Wyoming on January 9, 2010, and is the only freshman in the nation with a game of at least 25 points, 10 boards and four blocks this year.
In the team’s 73-70 overtime win against No. 6 Houston, the Aztecs overcame both a 5-point halftime deficit and trailed by 11-point with 14:58 to play to send the game to overtime and ultimately its 3-point win. The victory was Brian Dutcher’s 15th win in 26 games against top 25 opponents. Dutcher is the only head coach in program history with a winning record against ranked teams and it was the program’s first win against a top-10 team since a 71-64 victory over No. 1 Alabama in the Sweet 16 of the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
With the Aztecs 67-38 win over Air Force, San Diego State is 97-7 in the Brian Dutcher era, when it limits its opponent to 60 or fewer points. Overall, the Aztecs have won 31 straight when holding the opposition to 60 points or less and are 104-8 in its last 112.
In the Aztecs 100-49 win over Occidental on November 12, numerous highlights were achieved both as a program. It was the first time since the 2018-19 season SDSU scored 100 points in a game, not including overtime games. The team’s 37-point halftime lead was its biggest since a 46-point lead in the 2013-14 campaign. The Aztecs’ 18 three-pointers were one off the Viejas Arena and program record, set on Dec. 2, 2022, against Occidental.
San Diego State, which in 2023-24 reached the Mountain West Tournament championship game for the seventh time in head coach Brian Dutcher’s seven seasons, looks for its unprecedented 17th Mountain West men’s basketball title. Entering the 2024-25 season, San Diego State has won nine regular season and seven Mountain West tournament titles, the most of any program that has ever been a member of the league.
Brian Dutcher is in his eighth season as San Diego State’s head coach and his 26th season on the Aztec sidelines. In his seven-plus seasons as head coach, he has led the Aztecs to five conference titles, seven Mountain West championship game appearances, a 188-62 overall record and 96-34 mark in league games, both league leading in that time frame, has been named the national coach of the year, twice the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year and led this team to back-to-back Sweet 16s including a run to the 2023 NCAA national championship game.
The San Diego State men's basketball team is gearing up to face off against UNLV this Saturday at Viejas Arena. The Aztecs are coming off a strong win against Wyoming and are looking to continue their winning streak. With a record of 13-4 overall and 7-3 in conference play, the Aztecs are currently sitting in second place in the Mountain West standings. They will be looking to secure another important victory against UNLV, who are currently 6-6 in conference play.
The game is sure to be an exciting matchup, with both teams fighting for crucial conference wins. The Aztecs will need to bring their A-game and continue to play strong defense in order to come out on top.
So mark your calendars and come out to Viejas Arena this Saturday to support the Aztecs as they take on UNLV. It's sure to be a thrilling game that you won't want to miss!
