IU basketball’s Mike Woodson blames execution – The Daily Hoosier
Mike Woodson’s Indiana defense has been regressing since year one.
Whether it’s the personnel on the floor, or opposing coaches knowing the soft spots, IU has gone from a national top-25 ranking in defensive efficiency for the 2021-22 season according to KenPom, to trending towards back-to-back seasons outside the top-70.
Lately, Indiana’s defense has been abysmal, and the central theme of four losses over the last five games.
In his first season at IU, Woodson often leaned on a closing trio of Xavier Johnson, Trey Galloway and Rob Phinisee to lock down the perimeter, while Trayce Jackson-Davis cleaned up the rim runs.
This year the Hoosiers don’t have nearly the same level of athleticism when it comes to rim protection, and they aren’t effective staying in front of the basketball on the perimeter. And it shows in IU’s two-point defense. Opponents are shooting 49.7% from two, the worst percentage of the Woodson era by more than two percentage points. IU’s KenPom ranking in two-point defense has slipped each of the last four seasons, from 10th, 20th, 51st, and now 137th.
Early on this season it looked like Indiana might have improved guarding the 3-point arc year-over-year after a miserable 2023-24 campaign that saw teams hunt threes (41.2% 3-point attempt percentage, No. 307) and make them at a high rate (34.3%, No. 211).
But the last five games have provided the reality check.
Northwestern and Maryland combined to make a staggering 25-of-51 (49%) from three. IU has lost four of five games, and over that span teams have made 55-of-130 (42.3%) from beyond the arc.
Whether Indiana was better guarding the arc early in the year or just fortunate can be debated. But there is no question poor defense is sinking this season, and likely submerging the Woodson era along the way.
If more traditional stats are your thing, try this: IU has allowed 82.6 points per game over their last five contests. Good luck winning in the Big Ten like that.
“This year we haven’t been the defensive team that I thought we should be,” Woodson said on his Monday evening radio show. “It’s never too late. Every day we work in that area to try to get better because practice puts you in a position to feel good about what you do in the ballgame.”
Woodson seemed to suggest the players are being taught effective defensive schemes, and they have been properly prepared for games.
“A lot of it’s miscues, communication, being late on switches,” he said.
“It’s just learning to execute. How quickly can you execute, how quickly can you pick it up and take it from the practice floor to the game? When you really get good at it, you see all the things you’ve worked on come to light.”
But a poor plan properly executed will yield poor results.
How sound are Indiana’s help principles in an era of high three-point volume? How much are the micro details of defense being drilled, such as footwork, hand placement and close-out technique? How effective is Indiana’s game planning, where they seem to choose each game to leave elite shooters to help on dribble drives? How appropriate are their personnel groupings, with multiple players seemingly playing out of their optimal defensive position?
And over the last couple years, how much has defense been emphasized in recruiting?
Woodson seems to want to point to the execution of his defense as the main issue.
But with all of the trends working against him, both this year and over his four years as head coach, it’s reasonable to question whether some — maybe most — of the blame points to the man in charge.
And there are no breaks ahead on the schedule, with four of the Big Ten’s five most efficient offenses coming up next.

Former IU basketball center Kel’el Ware got his first NBA start on Tuesday evening.
And right away, he made a splash.
The 7-footer scored 20 points, pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds and added two blocks in 38 minutes against Portland.
According to OptaSTATS, Ware joins basketball great David Robinson as just the second player in the last 40 years to produce 20+ points, 15+ rebounds, and 2+ blocks in their first NBA career start.
Ware’s role and productivity have been on the rise for the last few weeks. Tuesday night’s effort followed a career-high tying 25 points against San Antonio on Sunday. Over his last 12 games, Ware is averaging 12.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks over 22.1 minutes per contest.
Prior to that, Ware’s role had been limited in his first NBA season that included some time in the G League.
Ware played one season for IU and led the Hoosiers in scoring (15.9 points per game), rebounding (9.9), blocked shots (1.9), and field goal percentage (58.6%). He was voted second-team All-Big Ten by the media.
Miami chose Ware with the 15th pick of the first round of the 2024 NBA Draft in June.

Northwestern’s Chris Collins
Chris Collins is in his 12th season as head coach of Northwestern men’s basketball, and has an overall record of 189-181 with the team.
Collins had a four year playing career with Duke before getting into coaching. He won All-ACC honors his Freshman year, and was placed on the All-ACC second team his senior year. After college, he briefly played professionally in Finland for two years.
Collins joined the Detroit Shock in the WNBA as an assistant under Nancy Lieberman. He then joined the college ranks at Seton Hall for two years before making it back to his alma mater with Duke in 2000. Collins stayed under Mike Krzyzewski until 2013, before being hired at Northwestern.
Collins got hired by Northwestern on March 27th, 2013. Since joining, Collins has led the Wildcats to three NCAA Tournament appearances. Collins’ best season with the Wildcats came in the 2022-23 season, where NU went 22-12 and 12-8 in the Big Ten, securing them a second place finish in the conference. This came off a season where Northwestern went 15-16 and finished tenth. Collins won both the Jim Phelan award and the Big Ten Coach of the Year in the 2022-23 season.

Junior Nick Martinelli leads the Big Ten and ranks 14th nationally in scoring by averaging 20.0 points per game, while shooting 49.8% from the floor (12th in B1G). Martinelli ranks third in the country in scoring by a forward, trailing Eric Dixon (24.7, Villanova) and Maxime Raynaud (20.8, Stanford). Martinelli is one of three high-major players averaging 20+ points per game and 5+ rebounds per game. The Glenview, Ill. native has registered nine games of 10+ points this season, the most in a season by a Northwestern forward since John Shurna posted 18 such games in 2011-12. The last Wildcat to average 20+ points per game was Shurna (20.0) in 2011-12.
Senior Brooks Barnhizer is averaging 18.4 points (6th in B1G), 9.3 rebounds (3rd), 4.1 assists (10th), 2.2 steals (T-2nd) and 1.3 blocks (10th) per game this season. Earlier this season, the Lafayette, Ind. native, posted seven consecutive double-doubles, which is tied for the longest streak in the nation this season and is believed to be the longest by a Wildcat all-time. He leads the country posting five 20+ point, 10+ rebound and 5+ assist games this year.
Martinelli (20.0) and Barnhizer (18.4) are one of two sets of power conference teammates in the country each averaging 18+ points per game. Martinelli has scored 20+ points in three consecutive games, while Barnhizer has accomplished that feat in two consecutive contests. Both Martinelli and Barnhizer are averaging 18+ points and 5+ rebounds per game, something only eight other high-major players are doing.
Graduate student Jalen Leach is third on the team in scoring averaging, 13.7 points per game. He has scored in double figures in seven of his last nine games, including a career-high 19 points in Big Ten play against Michigan.
Last time out, the Wildcats (11-7, 2-5 Big Ten) fell in overtime to No. 20 Michigan, 80-76. It was the Wildcats’ ninth overtime game over the past three seasons, which is tied with Bucknell for the most in the nation. Northwestern is 6-3 in such contests.
The Wildcats held the Wolverines, who entered the tilt leading the nation in field goal percentage, to a season-low 36.1% (22-of-61) mark from the field. Northwestern forced Michigan to shoot 7-of-27 from beyond the arc, snapping the Wolverines’ streak of six consecutive games with 10+ threes.
Barnhizer posted 21 points and eight rebounds while knocking down 10-of-13 free throw attempts. He became the second Wildcat this season to convert 10+ free throws in a game, joining Leach who had 15 against Eastern Illinois on Nov. 15, 2024. It was Barnhizer’s 10th 20-point game of the season.
Martinelli also recorded his 10th 20+ point game of the season. He logged 20 points and six rebounds, converting 9-of-12 free throws, while playing all 45 minutes. Martinelli has scored 20+ points in three of Northwestern’s four games against ranked opponents this season.
Leach had 19 points and five assists on 8-of-12 shooting in his 27 minutes of action. He was ejected on a flagrant II foul call with a shade under nine and a half minutes remaining. He became the first Wildcat to have 15+ points and 5+ assists while shooting at least a 65% from the field in a game since Boo Buie against Iowa on March 2, 2024. He tallied five of Northwestern’s seven assists.
Graduate student Ty Berry notched 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals in his second game off the bench this season. He became the first Wildcat to post those numbers in a conference game since Drew Crawford on March 3, 2012, against Iowa (18 points, 5 steals, 7 boards).
Graduate student Matthew Nicholson tied his career-high of 16 rebounds in the contest. Nicholson had the fifth 16+ rebound game by a Northwestern player over the past two decades. He was also the most recent player to do so on Feb. 18, 2024, when he pulled down 16 rebounds at Indiana. His 16 rebounds are the most by a Wildcat against a ranked opponent since at least 2004-05.
As a team, the Wildcats are averaging 10.2 turnovers lost per game, which is the fewest in the Big Ten, and ranks 32nd fewest nationally.
Northwestern’s defense is allowing an average of 68.1 points per game, which ranks sixth in the Big Ten. According to KenPom, Northwestern’s defense places 24th nationally in adjusted efficiency and 45th in turnover percentage.
Northwestern is looking to win its fifth consecutive game against Indiana, which would be the longest win streak by the Wildcats in series history since claiming five straight from 1913-15. Northwestern won last season’s meeting on Feb. 18, 2024, inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, 76-72. Ryan Langborg scored 26 points, while Nick Martinelli (13 points, 13 rebounds) and Matthew Nicholson (14 points, 16 rebounds) posted double-doubles.
Northwestern’s KenPom notable numbers:
(out of 364 teams)
Tempo – No. 297 (Offense No. 241 / Defense No. 304)
Offensive Efficiency – No. 94
- Northwestern has a 49.3% effective field goal percentage on the season (No. 233). They shoot 31.5% on 3-pointers (No. 271) and 50.3% on 2s (No. 198).
- The Wildcats take care of the ball very well, with a 14.9% turnover percentage (No. 29).
- Most of their point distribution comes from 2s at 54.8% of their total points (No. 42).
- They have one of the lowest 3-point attempt rates (3FGA/FGA) in the country at 32.5% (No. 323).
Defensive Efficiency – No. 24
- Northwestern has held opponents to a 49% effective field goal percentage (No. 105). Teams are shooting 32.4% on 3s (No. 130) and 49.2% from 2s (No. 124).
- The Wildcats force a good amount of turnovers at a 20.7% rate (No. 44).
- Opponents go to the free throw line a lot vs. Northwestern, with free throw attempts making up 35.6% of field goal attempts (No. 233).
- They limit second-chance opportunities. Opponents are getting offensive rebounds at a 27.8% rate (No. 87).
- Teams have one of the highest assisting rates against NU, at a 62.6 percent rate (No. 353).
OG’s Pick
Win/Loss Record: 14-3
Hey, not too bad on the results side of things.
For Northwestern, I expect a battle similar to the one IU had against Ohio State. I’m guessing a back-and-forth game that may be decided in the final minutes. The caveat to that is the health of Malik Reneau and Bryson Tucker. Woodson said in a presser that both have participated in some practice activities and have a chance to see the floor tonight.
The Wildcats do have some pretty high-volume scorers with Martinelli and Barnhizer. Both are interesting matchups that Indiana has to prepare for, especially if Leal is expected to keep his place in the starting lineup. If I had to guess, it’ll probably be Leal on Martinelli and Goode on Barnhizer, or vice-versa. As a whole, Northwestern has had some swing results in similar matchups that the Hoosiers have had, so it’s going to be tough to call a winner here.
Indiana got a huge momentum boost against the Buckeyes in their last one, but I don’t know if it continues tonight.
PICK: Northwestern 75 – Indiana 71

IU football makes addition of new QB coach Chandler Whitmer official, Cignetti comments – The Daily Hoosier
Indiana has formally announced Chandler Whitmer as the new quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator.
As previously reported here, Whitmer takes over for Tino Sunseri, who is the new offensive coordinator at UCLA.
Below is the full release from IU Athletics.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head football coach Curt Cignetti has announced the addition of Chandler Whitmer as the program’s quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator.
His coaching resume includes work with some of the top names in quarterbacking. He helped Justin Fields (Ohio State) and Trevor Lawrence (Clemson) grow into NFL Draft picks at the collegiate level, tutored Justin Herbert (Los Angeles) to NFL success, and developed Michael Penix Jr. (Atlanta) into an NFL starting quarterback.
“Chandler came very highly recommended and has been involved with the development of a number of top-flight quarterbacks,” Cignetti said. “We’re excited he’s joining the organization, and he will do a terrific job developing our quarterbacks.”
“I am fired up to join Coach Cignetti, Coach Shanahan, and the Hoosiers program,” Whitmer said. “What they did this past season in such a short amount of time was tremendous and the future is incredibly bright. I am excited to learn from everyone, bring some things from my experiences, and develop the quarterback position.”
Whitmer spent the past four seasons in the National Football League with the Los Angeles Chargers (2021-23) as an offensive quality control assistant and the Atlanta Falcons (2024) as the pass game specialist. In both roles, he worked primarily with the quarterback position.
He got his start in coaching at the college level with stops as a graduate assistant at Yale (2018), Ohio State (2019) and Clemson (2020), where he made College Playoff appearances with the Buckeyes and Tigers.
Whitmer worked with top-10 passing offenses in three of his four campaigns at the professional level, including the No. 3 passing offense in 2021 (269.6 ypg) and 2022 (282.4 ypg), and the Chargers made the playoffs in 2022 as an AFC Wild Card. Through 16 weeks of the 2024 season, the Falcons ranked No. 6 in passing (238.9 ypg).
His one season in Atlanta included the development of Penix Jr., who was the team’s first-round draft choice in 2024. Whitmer helped Penix Jr. move into the starting quarterback role in Week 16 with the Falcons in the thick of an NFC South title chase.
While in Los Angeles, Herbert set NFL records as no player has more completions (1,316), passing yards (14,089) or total touchdowns (102) over the first three years of a career. Herbert is also the only quarterback in NFL history to begin a career with three-consecutive seasons of 4,000-plus passing yards and is the second to throw 25 touchdowns in each of his first three years, joining Hall of Famer Peyton Manning.
In 2023, Herbert completed 297-of-456 pass attempts (65.1 percent) for 3,134 yards and 20 touchdowns to seven interceptions, prior to being placed on Reserve/Injured following Week 14.
The 2021 season saw Herbert become the third-youngest player in NFL history to eclipse 5,000 passing yards in a single campaign. Herbert’s 38 passing scores took his career total to 69, setting the record for most by a QB through their first two pro seasons.
Whitmer’s first year in Los Angeles saw Herbert earn his first career Pro Bowl nod after setting single-season franchise records for yards passing (5,014), passing touchdowns (38), and completions (443). The Bolts posted the second-most fourth-quarter points scored by any team in a single campaign in NFL history (181) and the offensive unit posted single-season team records for first downs (401) and passing touchdowns (38).
As an offensive graduate assistant at Clemson, Whitmer helped the offensive coaching staff and assisted with the quarterback and wide receiver groups. He worked closely with Lawrence, the runner-up for the 2020 Heisman Trophy, as Clemson defeated No. 2 Notre Dame in the ACC Championship and earned a bid in the College Football Playoff for the sixth-straight season.
Whitmer contributed to the offensive coaching staff at Ohio State during its 2019 College Football Playoff run. First-year signal-caller Justin Fields led the Buckeyes to a 12-0 regular season record and a defeat of No. 8 Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game.
The Atlanta native started his coaching career with one year as an offensive quality control coach at Yale.
As a player, Whitmer logged 24 starts under center for the University of Connecticut (2012-14) and earned a rookie minicamp invite from the Philadelphia Eagles. He culminated his Huskies career ranked No. 4 in program history in career completions (403) and passing yards (5,082), and No. 6 in UConn annals with 25 career passing scores.
Whitmer started his collegiate career at the University of Illinois (2010), before one season at Butler (Kan.) Community College (2011), where he was named NJCAA All-America honorable mention after leading Butler to a top-five national ranking.

Winthrop’s Mark Prosser
Mark Prosser is in his fourth season as head coach of the Winthrop men’s basketball program. He was named head coach on April 2, 2021.
Prosser started his coaching career as a student assistant at his alma mater, Marist. After a few seasons, he landed his first assistant job at Wofford in 2002. He then spent five seasons with Bucknell until 2008. He returned to Wofford and remained on their staff until 2011.
Prosser got his first head coaching gig at Division 3 Brevard in the spring of 2011. He spent only one season at the helm and accumulated a 5-23 record. In 2012, Prosser was hired onto Winthrop’s staff as an assistant and remained there until 2018 before getting another head coaching job at Western Carolina. He finished with a 37-53 overall record across three seasons at WCU.
Prosser was then hired to lead Winthrop and has since had some success. In his first season, he led Winthrop to a 23-9 overall record and a 14-2 record in conference play, which was good enough to win the South division in the Big South. In the following two seasons, Winthrop finished in the top-5 of the conference. So far, Prosser has a 65-45 overall record with Winthrop.

OG’s Pick
Win/Loss Record: 8-2
It’s Indiana’s last game before they head into conference play for the rest of the season, so it is safe to say they’d like to tune things up before Big Ten play.
Winthrop has some decent metrics defensively, but have struggled against teams of higher competition (i.e. Florida State, Louisville). The Hoosiers have not been a team to pull away early though, and were only ahead by single digits in the last five minutes against Chattanooga. Although I do expect the Hoosiers to win comfortably, I don’t think it’s an entirely dominant effort.
PICK: Indiana 82 – Winthrop 68
