San Francisco chef Charles Phan of the Slanted Door hospitalized
Famed San Francisco chef Charles Phan, 62, has been hospitalized after suffering a serious medical emergency that resulted in a brain injury, according to sources close to his family.
Staff at Phan’s restaurants have been notified, as well as members of the local restaurant community. No additional details about his condition have been confirmed by his family, who declined to comment and asked for privacy through a spokesperson.
Phan is one of the most prominent Vietnamese American chefs and has published two cookbooks on Vietnamese cuisine during his decades-long career. The news of his hospitalization, which a source says happened Wednesday, comes as he is poised to make a much-anticipated comeback this summer, when he’s expected to reopen his lauded restaurant the Slanted Door in the Mission after a years-long closure.
Phan, a pillar of the local restaurant community for decades, debuted the pioneering restaurant in 1995 on Valencia near 16th Street. It became a national sensation for elevating Vietnamese cuisine, which was not widely known to the U.S. dining public, and for using local, high-quality ingredients.
He later moved the restaurant to 100 Brannan St. before landing at the Ferry Building Marketplace in 2004. There, the restaurant served shaking beef and crab with cellophane noodles to locals and tourists before going dark at the onset of the pandemic.
Renowned San Francisco chef Charles Phan of the famous Slanted Door restaurant has been hospitalized. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers. #CharlesPhan #SlantedDoor #GetWellSoon

Kelly Stafford Shares Update on Kids’ Hospitalization Ahead of Husband Matthew Stafford’s Game
The Stafford family’s weekend in Arizona took a scary turn.
On Jan. 11, Kelly Stafford—who shares 7-year-old twins Sawyer and Chandler, as well as daughters Hunter, 6, and Tyler, 4, with NFL quarterback Matthew Stafford—posted a photo from the hospital.
“Last night was long,” Kelly wrote on Instagram Story along with a photo of two of their kids in a hospital bed. “Back in beds and sleeping, everyone except Hunter. Feels like she drank a Celsius.”
In a follow-up post, Kelly—who tied the knot with Matthew in 2015—shared a picture of their kids walking alongside the NFL player.
“Before that tho,” she noted, “they were all smiles getting to go with daddy on his work trip.”
Matthew’s team, the Los Angeles Rams, traveled to Arizona this week to face off against the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL’s Jan. 13 Wild Card game, which was relocated from Inglewood’s SoFi Stadium to Glendale’s State Farm Stadium amid the ongoing wildfires in Southern California.
And while Kelly didn’t share more details about their kids’ hospitalization, she recently revealed that some of their family, herself included, had been sick.
It has been reported that Kelly and Matthew Stafford’s children have been hospitalized ahead of the NFL game this weekend. The couple’s daughters, Chandler and Sawyer, are currently receiving medical treatment for undisclosed reasons. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Stafford family during this difficult time. We hope for a speedy recovery for their children and that they are able to return home soon.
As fans, we stand behind the Stafford family and send them all of our love and support as they navigate this challenging situation. We know that they are strong and resilient, and we believe that they will get through this together as a family.

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Imagine attending a New Year’s Eve celebration in Hawaii and then waking up from a coma months later in Arizona.
Arizona Burn Center director Dr. Kevin Foster said that’s likely the jarring reality for six people he’s treating.
“Generally we keep people intubated, sedated, sleepy and forgetful until we get most of their burns covered and none of the patients are even close to that period yet,” said Dr. Foster.
A New Year’s fireworks explosion in Hawaii killed four people and badly hurt nearly two dozen more.
Hawaii’s burn center is at capacity, so six survivors were flown 3,000 miles across the Pacific Ocean to Phoenix on a military plane equipped to care for them in the air.
All six continue to fight for their lives more than two weeks after the disaster; intubated in a coma and are unaware of where they are and what they’ve been through.
“We’ve been operating on each one of them every two or three days since that time and we’ve gotten the burns off of all of them. We’ve started reconstruction and skin grafting efforts,” said Dr. Foster.
Dr. Foster says the severity of their injuries ranges from nearly 50% to 80% of their bodies burned.
He says these are wounds you’d see in a war zone, with debris from the blast leaving behind significant lacerations and infections in addition to the burns.
“These are potentially lethal, deadly injuries,” he said.
The six victims are in their 20s and 30s. According to their GoFundMe, two are dating each other, and two others have a 3-month-old baby together.
“It’s our goal to have everybody leave here and go back to Hawaii and live the lives that they were living before,” said Dr. Foster.
The Arizona Burn Foundation is providing accommodation in the Phoenix area for 20 family members of these six survivors.
Some Valleywise Health caregivers have even offered their own homes.
Donations are going toward hotels, transportation, and emotional services.
“We do know this is a long-term impact for these families and we’re trying to make their stay as comfortable as possible,” said Rex Albright, the foundation’s CEO.
Dr. Foster says it will be six months to a year before these patients can return to normalcy. As traumatic, he expects many of them to suffer from PTSD and will need both mental and physical support throughout their healing journey.
Despite the long road ahead, he said all victims are on track to recover.

Report: Kirby Smart father, Sonny, hospitalized ahead of Sugar Bowl matchup vs. Notre Dame
The father of Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart is reportedly recovering in a New Orleans hospital after a fall outside his hotel Tuesday afternoon, according to UGASports’ Radi Nabulsi.
Sonny Smart, the elderly father off Kirby Smart, was reportedly admitted to a local hospital where he’s expected to undergo hip surgery after his fall, per Nabulsi.
Sonny Smart was in New Orleans with his wife, Sharon, to watch their son coach the Georgia Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl College Football Playoff national quarterfinal, which has been rescheduled for 4 pm ET Thursday following the tragic New Year’s Day terrorist attack on Bourbon Street.
Smart’s fall was unrelated to the early-morning terror attack, where 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a U.S. citizen from Texas, allegedly drove a pickup truck into a crowd of NYE revelers, killing at least 15 and injuring more than 30, according to local officials.
Sonny Smart is a Georgia High School coaching legend after more than two decades coaching at multiple schools in the state, including at Kirby Smart’s alma mater Bainbridge and Rayburn County High.
ESPN’s Laura Rutledge provided an update on what the Georgia team is doing around 1 p.m. ET in New Orleans. She revealed the Bulldogs are currently sheltering-in-place inside the team hotel. Police presence around the hotel has increased too, attempting to protect both teams ahead of the game.
“I spoke with the spokesperson for Georgia’s athletic department, Steven Drummond,” Rutledge said on ESPN College GameDay. “He said currently at the team hotel, Georgia has a shelter-in-place, so they are locked down at the hotel, nobody leaving that area. And they’re going to continue to do that as they gather more information.
“Right now, the College Football Playoff, as well as the Sugar Bowl officials, are meeting. They’re meeting with FBI. They are meeting with police here in New Orleans, trying to figure out exactly what’s going to be safest moving forward. And I can tell you, there is an extreme police presence here. They’ve added a lot more when it comes to police presence around New Orleans, doing everything they can to keep everybody safe.”
Griffin McVeigh contributed to this report.
In a shocking turn of events, it has been reported that Kirby Smart’s father, Sonny Smart, has been hospitalized just days before the highly anticipated Sugar Bowl matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame. This news has undoubtedly added a layer of concern and distraction for the Georgia head coach as he prepares his team for the crucial game.Sonny Smart, a well-known and beloved figure in the Georgia football community, was reportedly admitted to the hospital for unknown reasons. Kirby Smart, who is known for his close relationship with his father, is undoubtedly feeling the weight of this situation as he balances his responsibilities as a coach with his concern for his father’s health.
As Georgia fans and players rally around their coach during this difficult time, it remains to be seen how this development will impact the team’s preparation and performance in the Sugar Bowl. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Smart family as they navigate this challenging situation.

Dave Blunts Reportedly Hospitalized After Throwing Purple Tracksuit Out
Dave Blunts was reportedly spotted sleeping in the hospital by a fan, which has once again inspired concerned conversations around his health. Of course, this conversation unfortunately included a lot of trolls just making fun of his weight or people ignoring the more serious worries about his condition, but a lot of people kept the focus to his well-being. The rapper had previously thrown out his iconic purple tracksuit, which became his main piece of imagery and the face of these discussions. “It’s time to end the era of the purple tracksuit,” he expressed. “As I go on this journey to better my health and life I must get rid of all things of the past and start new.”
Furthermore, not many other details emerged concerning Dave Blunts’ recent alleged hospitalization, and we don’t know if we will learn more about it. In any case, we wish him the best on this specific journey and on his broader path of self-betterment, health, and leading a more fulfilling and fruitful life. A lot of folks expressed criticism over how Blunts became so popular in the public eye, as many took issue with how his struggles took center stage at Juice WRLD Day.
Dave Blunts Reportedly Hospitalized
When paired with that event, which commemorates a rap legend lost to addiction, many criticized the inclusion of Dave Blunts and the supposed promotion of that lifestyle. Some other narratives around this performance emerged, namely his Snoop Dogg diss with the Long Beach MC took in stride. But the most important thing in fans’ eyes is this discussion around image and health, one whose complexities don’t always mix well with a social media environment that is more reactionary and scandalous than these topics deserve.
Regardless, only Dave Blunts can decide how he wants to live his life and what is best for him, and we hope that he finds that peace and path no matter what the Internet has to say about it. Many already expressed their concern, but few can truly force anything on him. We’ll see whether 2025 presents a new era or if the online space will continue to exacerbate this uphill battle.
