How did the NBA’s tallest player fare against the Houston Rockets? (Jan. 30)
Zach Edey had an eventful night game when the Memphis Grizzlies took on the Houston Rockets and FedEx Forum on Thursday night in a vital Western Conference encounter.
The Grizzlies (31-16) are hot on the heels of the Rockets (32-14) who were nursing a 4-game winning streak going into the game. Zach Edey wasted little time in making his presence felt as he nailed a turnaround hook one minute into the game from 8′ out. The NBA’s tallest player used all of his 7-foot-4 frame when he scored next, dunking emphatically with six minutes left in the first quarter. After recording two assists and two rebounds as well, he was subbed out with 03:28 left in the initial period.
Edey was subbed in with 08:35 remaining before the half and did not make much of an impact on the box score. An errant pass and a personal foul later, he was subbed out again, with 04:11 still left on the game clock before the interval.
•
Things did not get much better for Edey as he got into foul trouble early in third quarter and picked up his third personal foul after a brief tangle with Steven Adams. Shortly after he was denied at the rim. He returned late in the third and sank one of two free throws to take his overall points tally to five points.
Zach Edey did not trouble the scorers in the fourth period as a the game wound down to a fascinating end. Down by eight points with six minutes remaining in the final period, the Grizzlies mounted a furious rally that ended with Jaren Jackson Jr. sinking two clutch free throws to win the game 120-119.
Zach Edey selected in NBA Rising Stars Game
Zach Edey was one of 10 rookies named to the All-Star Weekend event, slated to be held in San Francisco Feb. 14 at the Chase Center followed by All-Star Saturday night on Feb. 15 and the All-Star Game on Feb. 16. Rising Stars will begin at 9 p.m. and be televised by TNT.
Edey who was named two-time consensus national player of the year at Purdue will face off against sophomore Trayce Jackson-Davis who is also from his alma mater.
The Canadian Center has impressed NBA fans and teammates alike in his first season, averaging 9.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game on highly efficient shooting. With his firm but fair nature of physical play, he has earned the trust of his teammate Ja Morant who recently lauded him for his protective abilities,
NBA Rising Stars Rookies
The other rookies joining Zach Edey include his teammate Jaylen Wells and fellow Rookie of the Year frontrunners Jaylen Wells and Yves Missi.

Fans were eager to see how he would perform against the Rockets, known for their fast-paced and high-scoring style of play. The game was a thrilling one, with both teams trading baskets and playing at a high level. #NBAs #tallest #player #fare #Houston #Rockets #JanBrooklyn Nets vs. Houston Rockets preview: Is Houston a model for Brooklyn?
Well that was impressive. The Brooklyn Nets were on the road Wednesday night to face the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets didn’t put up a fight and the Nets cruised to a 21 point victory. Not much more to it then that.
The opponent tonight has been one of the biggest surprises in the NBA this season. The Houston Rockets have been magnificent this season and have a great chance of securing homecourt advantage in the first round. They went down to the wire against the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday night, but fell one point short.
Where to follow the game
YES Network on TV. WFAN on radio. Tip after 8 PM.
Injuries
No Cam Thomas, Cam Johnson, De’Anthony Melton, Maxwell Lewis, Bogan Bogdanovic, or Noah Clowney. Dariq Whitehead is back with Long Island.
Jabari Smith is out with a left metacarpal fracture. Alperen Sengun is questionable with a left calf contusion.
The game
Are the Rockets ahead of schedule? Coming into the season, Ime Udoka’s guys weren’t expected to be major players. However, they’ve been better than even the most optimistic Rocket fan could have predicted. Houston has a bright, bright future and they have the room to do just about anything they set their minds to as we head into the trade deadline and beyond.
Someone who’s a big part of that vision is Amen Thompson. He’s been on a great roll in recent weeks, and he’s been a multiplying force for his teammates. Over at The Dream Shake, Nick Stevenson made note of Thompson vis a vis the injured Jabari Smith and said:
The biggest argument against Amen becoming as permanent starter is his lack of 3-point shooting, however the Rockets are shooting nearly 40 percent from the three-point line since Amen has become a starter in Smith Jr.’s absence. His defense leads to fast break points, his penetration into the paint has created open shot opportunities for his teammates when he’s not finishing in the paint at a very high clip.
For as good as he’s been, the super sophomore still has some more miles to go. Udoka talked about that after Thursday’s final possession
Ime Udoka said the final play was drawn up for Amen Thompson. They cut off his path and he kicked it to Fred for the final shot.

Live and learn.
If the Nets want to pull off the upset, they’re going to need a big game out of Nic Claxton. The Rockets are the best rebounding team in the NBA this season and assuming Sengun is back for this game, we’ll be seeing a top ten rebounder in the league this season.
Player to watch: Jalen Green
Is this the year Jalen Green finally puts it all together? We’ve been waiting for a good while for the former number two pick in the 2021 Draft to live up to his potential. He’s still got some ways to go, but he’s coming off of the best month of his young career. In January, Green averaged close to 26 points per game on 47/44/89 shooting splits.
Green keeps showing what he can do. The only question has been can he do it on a consistent basis. Of late that question is being answered in the affirmative and with him, Thompson and Sengun all still only 22 years old, Houston is a problem.
Going forward, the Nets can hopefully do what the Rockets have done, make smart trades for picks, build organically, hire a smart young coach and overall make the right decisions at the right time. The Rockets are way further along on that track.

The No. 19 Texas Tech Red Raiders (16-4, 7-2 Big 12) and the No. 5 Houston Cougars (17-3, 9-0) meet Saturday at Fertitta Center in Houston. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college basketball odds around the Texas Tech vs. Houston odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.
The Red Raiders have won 5 in a row, while covering 3 of the past 4 outings. That includes a 71-57 win as an 11.5-point favorite over TCU last time out Wednesday. The Under has cashed in 4 of the previous 5 outings.
The Cougars have rattled off 13 consecutive victories since a neutral-floor loss Nov. 30 against San Diego State. Houston has covered 8 of the past 10 games since Dec. 21, while the Under is on a 4-1 roll in the previous 5 contests.
Houston has won 4 in a row in this series since Dec. 23, 2014. Since the Cougars joined the Big 12, they have won and covered each of the 2 meetings since Jan. 17, 2024, including a victory in the conference tournament last spring. The Cougars are 4-0 ATS in the past 4 meetings, with the Over hitting in each of the encounters last season.

Texas Tech at Houston picks and predictions
Prediction
Houston 66, Texas Tech 61
Moneyline
Houston (-650) will set you back 6 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s way too much risk for a standalone bet or as part of a multi-leg parlay. The Cougars have won 13 in a row, but this is way too much risk in a battle between ranked opponents.
PASS.
Against the spread
TEXAS TECH +10.5 (-110) is a solid play catching double digits against Houston -10.5 (-110). While the Cougars have covered each of the past 3 games, as a double-digit favorite UH is just 1-2 ATS in the past 3 tries, while going 6-6 ATS in the past 12 attempts.
For the Red Raiders, they’re 3-1 ATS in the past 4 outings. As an underdog, Texas Tech has won and covered the only previous instance at BYU Jan. 7, winning 72-67.
Over/Under
UNDER 127.5 (-115) is the lean, but this is a super-low number, so be careful.
The Under is 4-1 in the past 5 games for both of these teams. At home, the Under has cashed in each of the past 3 home games for Houston. The Under has hit in 2 of the past 3 road contests for Texas Tech, too.

Texas Tech at Houston Odds, Picks and PredictionsThe Texas Tech Red Raiders will be facing off against the Houston Cougars in what is sure to be an exciting college football matchup. Both teams are coming off strong performances in their previous games, and this showdown is shaping up to be a close one.
The odds currently have Texas Tech as the slight favorite, with a spread of -3.5 points. However, Houston is a strong team and has the home-field advantage, so this game could easily go either way.
When it comes to picks and predictions, it’s a tough call. Texas Tech has a powerful offense led by quarterback Tyler Shough, who has been putting up big numbers so far this season. On the other hand, Houston’s defense has been stout, and they have the ability to shut down high-powered offenses.
In the end, I believe this game will come down to the wire, with both teams trading blows back and forth. However, I’m leaning towards Texas Tech pulling out a close victory in this one. Look for Shough to make some big plays down the stretch and lead the Red Raiders to a hard-fought win.
Final prediction: Texas Tech 31, Houston 28.

What to Know
Houston is on a 28-game streak of home wins (dating back to last season), while Texas Tech is on a six-game streak of away wins (also dating back to last season): one of those streaks is about to end. Both will face off in a Big 12 battle at 6:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at Fertitta Center. The Cougars are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 76 points per game this season.
Houston is headed into this one after the oddsmakers set last week’s over/under low at 124.5, but even that wound up being too high. They came out on top against West Virginia by a score of 63-49 on Wednesday.
Houston’s win was the result of several impressive offensive performances. One of the most notable came from L.J. Cryer, who earned 17 points. Cryer had some trouble finding his footing against Kansas on Saturday, so this was a step in the right direction.
Meanwhile, Texas Tech earned a 71-57 win over TCU on Wednesday.
Texas Tech can attribute much of their success to JT Toppin, who dropped a double-double on 18 points and 14 rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Toppin a new career-high in assists (three). Another player making a difference was Chance McMillian, who had 16 points.
Houston is on a roll lately: they’ve won 14 of their last 15 games, which provided a nice bump to their 17-3 record this season. As for Texas Tech, their victory bumped their record up to 16-4.
Some high-performance offense is likely on the agenda as the two teams are some of the highest scoring teams in the league. Houston hasn’t had any problem running up the score this season, having averaged 76 points per game. However, it’s not like Texas Tech struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 81.4. With both teams so easily able to put up points, the only question left is who can run the score up higher.
As for their next game, Houston is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 10.5 points. For those looking to play the spread, take note: they are a solid 11-7 against the spread when expected to win.
Odds
Houston is a big 10.5-point favorite against Texas Tech, according to the latest college basketball odds.
The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 10.5-point spread, and stayed right there.
The over/under is 128.5 points.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs Houston Cougars Prediction, Odds and Picks
The Houston Cougars will put their 9-0 conference record on the line when they host the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Saturday. Houston has been the class of the Big 12 thus far, and their recent road wins over Kansas and West Virginia further prove that. As for Texas Tech, they are currently 7-2 league play with recent wins at home over Oklahoma State and TCU. An upset win for the Red Raiders would tighten up the Big 12 regular season title race, and they may have a good chance to accomplish that in this matchup with the Cougars.
Houston is coming off 2 huge road wins, including a miraculous overtime win at Allen Fieldhouse against Kansas, so you could consider this to be a let down spot for the Cougars. The injury report is also important to monitor in this contest, as Emmanuel Sharp has been dealing with an ankle injury and was limited to 3 points in just 18 minutes in their last game vs West Virginia. Sharp is key for this Cougars team that lacks perimeter scoring depth outside of LJ Cryer, so consider this a big loss if he is either limited again or is unable to play in this contest.
Houston’s defense is #1 in adjusted efficiency, per KenPom, but Texas Tech’s offense may have one of the better setups to succeed against it. There are 3 important qualities for teams to have in order to generate offensive success against the Cougars, and those are ball security, 3-point shooting, and offensive rebounding. The Red Raiders grade out well in all 3 categories, as they are 80th nationally in turnover rate, 23rd in 3-point shooting percentage, and 22nd on the offensive glass. The spacing the Red Raiders have is especially important in this matchup against the Cougars’ rim denial defense, and forcing the Cougars’ bigs to guard on the perimeter can potentially break down Kelvin Sampson’s defense to an extent.
Texas Tech is dealing with an injury of their own, as Darrion Williams is questionable for this contest after missing last game vs TCU. While he is an important player for the Red Raiders in the long term, his loss may not be felt as much in this contest. Coach Grant McCasland has elected to use a 2 big man lineup during Williams’ absence, and this should help the Red Raiders significantly on the defensive glass. Houston is one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country, but Texas Tech’s frontcourt combo of JT Toppin and Federiko Federiko has a great chance at limiting the Cougars in that area.
While it is scary to bet against Houston, that is exactly what we are going to do here with Texas Tech as a 9.5 point underdog. The favorable matchup the Red Raiders may have along with this potentially being a letdown spot for the Cougars is too much to ignore. If the Red Raiders get hot from 3-point range, they have potential to pull off the road upset, but my official pick will be taking the points.
Texas Tech vs Houston prediction: Texas Tech +9.5 (-110) at time of publishing, playable at that number

The highly anticipated matchup between the Texas Tech Red Raiders and the Houston Cougars is set to take place this weekend, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Both teams have had strong showings so far this season, making this game a must-watch for college football fans. The Red Raiders are coming off a big win against FIU, showcasing their explosive offense led by quarterback Tyler Shough. On the other side, the Cougars have been impressive as well, with a dominant defense and a balanced offensive attack.
In terms of odds, the Red Raiders are currently favored to win by a narrow margin, but the Cougars are not to be underestimated. This game could truly go either way, making it a tough one to predict.
As for picks, it’s a tough call, but I believe the Red Raiders will come out on top in a close and hard-fought battle. Their offense has been firing on all cylinders, and I think they will be able to outscore the Cougars in the end.
Overall, this matchup promises to be a thrilling one, with two talented teams battling it out for supremacy. Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Texas Tech Red Raiders take on the Houston Cougars.

#Houston #Rockets #Boston #Celtics #Jan #Box #ScoresHouston Astros Infield Target Agrees to Deal With Seattle Mariners
The Houston Astros were connected to Jorge Polanco at two separate times this offseason.
When it appeared like Alex Bregman wouldn’t return, it was reported the Astros were interested in the veteran infielder to potentially backfill the opening.
But when they acquired Isaac Paredes as part of the package in the Kyle Tucker trade, it no longer seemed like Houston was considering signing the 11-year big leaguer.
Then, just as reports started coming out the front office was seriously considering a reunion with Bregman, it was also revealed they were looking into the possibility of adding Polanco in case their franchise legend decided to sign elsewhere.
Well, Polanco is now no longer available.
Per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, he has agreed to a deal with the Seattle Mariners, rejoining the team he spent last season with after they acquired him ahead of this past campaign.
No financial details have been released at the time of writing.
Adding another infielder is been something the front office seems keen on doing despite already having a full group with Mauricio Dubon slotted into the utility man role.
Jose Altuve has been floated as someone who could be in for a role change, moving out of his spot at second base and taking over left field despite never playing there at any point during his distinguished Major League career.
Of course, the Polanco development puts more attention on bringing Bregman back.
It seems like Houston is ready to go with their plan of moving Altuve into left to fill that hole.
In a surprising turn of events, the Houston Astros have lost out on their top infield target as he has agreed to a deal with the Seattle Mariners. The Astros had been heavily pursuing the talented infielder in hopes of bolstering their roster for the upcoming season. However, the Mariners were able to swoop in and secure the deal, leaving the Astros scrambling to find a new target.
This news comes as a blow to the Astros, who were banking on adding the infielder to their lineup. It remains to be seen how they will adjust their plans moving forward.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Who’s Playing
Houston Rockets @ Memphis Grizzlies
Current Records: Houston 32-14, Memphis 31-16
How To Watch
What to Know
The Grizzlies are on a four-game streak of home wins, while the Rockets are on a four-game streak of away wins: one of those streaks is about to end. The Memphis Grizzlies will host the Houston Rockets at 9:30 p.m. ET on Thursday at FedExForum. The Grizzlies are strutting in with some offensive muscle as they’ve averaged 123.3 points per game this season.
The Grizzlies are probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering the Knicks just ended the team’s six-game winning streak on Monday. They were dealt a punishing 143-106 loss at the hands of New York. Memphis hasn’t had much luck with New York recently, as the team’s come up short the last two times they’ve met.
Even though they lost, the Grizzlies smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 18 offensive rebounds (they’re ranked second in offensive rebounds per game overall). That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they’ve now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in seven consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, even if it wasn’t a dominant performance, the Rockets beat the Hawks 100-96 on Tuesday.
Memphis’ defeat dropped their record down to 31-16. As for Houston, they are on a roll lately: they’ve won ten of their last 12 games, which provided a nice bump to their 32-14 record this season.
Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: The Grizzlies have crashing the boards this season, having averaged 47.6 rebounds per game (they’re ranked second in rebounds per game overall). However, it’s not like the Rockets (currently ranked first) struggle in that department as they’ve been averaging 48.1. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.
The Grizzlies couldn’t quite finish off the Rockets in their previous meeting on January 13th and fell 120-118. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of the Rockets’ Jalen Green, who went 13 for 18 en route to 42 points. Back with a vengeance, will the Grizzlies be able to stop him this time around? There’s only one way to find out.
