  • Newcastle boss Howe still unclear on Almiron, Kelly

The merry dance that is the effect of PSR on Newcastle United’s transfer activity continues unabated throughout January, much to nobody’s delight.

Those three letters (profit, sustainability, rules) which we all have all had to accept are essential to modern football, yet that none of us truly understand because we do not have access to all of the financials involved.

In the summer, Newcastle were able to make a strong effort to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, who would have cost upwards of £50million. But now the focus is on potential exits, with Miguel Almiron the most likely to depart, and some supporters are questioning why that is the case. Howe said this morning:

“It’s not as clear as everyone will make out. There’s not a pot of money there just waiting to be spent.”

Even he accepted his answer was about as comprehensible as Newcastle’s turnaround in form, which has seen them jump from 12th to fourth inside a month and able to set a new club record for consecutive victories in all competitions (10) against Bournemouth tomorrow.

Almiron, as things stand, is set to be on the bench for that lunchtime kick-off, despite Atlanta United being in negotiations to re-sign the winger. While not denying Almiron could still leave this month, Howe insisted nobody inside Newcastle wants to lose players this month, but the PSR reality is that they are best placed doing so.

Lloyd Kelly is less likely to depart, despite his lack of minutes, and Howe showed his irritation at news of a bid being rejected this week leaking out, describing the “rumours” as being “club-driven from Fenerbahce, not from the player”.

The speculation will not end there though, with more than a fortnight still to go in this window.

And unfortunately, I’ll be writing and you’ll be reading those three annoying letters — PSR — time and again during that time…

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has admitted that he is still unclear on the futures of midfielders Miguel Almiron and Matty Longstaff.

Almiron has been linked with a move away from St James’ Park in the January transfer window, with clubs in Europe reportedly interested in the Paraguayan international. However, Howe has said that he has not yet made a decision on the 27-year-old’s future.

Similarly, young midfielder Matty Longstaff’s future at Newcastle is also uncertain, with reports suggesting that he could leave on loan in search of more regular first-team football.

Speaking to reporters, Howe said, “I’m still evaluating the squad and the players we have. Miguel and Matty are both talented players, but I need to assess what is best for the team moving forward. I will sit down with them both and discuss their futures in the coming weeks.”

Newcastle fans will be eager to see what decisions Howe makes regarding the two players, as they look to push up the Premier League table in the second half of the season.

  • Newcastle United dispatch scouts to watch ‘superstar’ as Eddie Howe steals a march

Newcastle United are looking to sign an attacker with a real eye for goal.

The Magpies have been fortunate enough to have Alexander Isak at their disposal this season. The Swede is the Premier League’s third-highest scorer with 15, only Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah have more.

Isak has been hailed as the Premier League’s best centre-forward by many. Ally McCoist recently said Isak was the best “by a country mile.

Despite Isak’s fine form, they struggle to find where the goals come from if he is not available. Anthony Gordon is having a fine season thanks to his 10-goal contributions in the league. However, there are just five other players who have scored for Newcastle this season, the lowest in the Premier League.

William Osula showed signs that he has a chance to replace Isak in the future thanks to his wonderful goal in Newcastle’s win against Bromley. Elsewhere, Callum Wilson is out injured and is out of contract in the summer, so there is a need to buy.

With Newcastle eyeing a quality striker, there is one name who keeps cropping up. Now, a recent report has stated that the Magpies sent an executive to watch him recently.

Newcastle send scout to watch Jonathan David

LOSC Lille forward Jonathan David has been in exceptional form for the French side this season. He is joint-top scorer in Ligue 1 with 11 goals to his name.

David; who has been hailed as a “superstar”, has also had a fantastic run in the Champions League, scoring six goals in 10 games across the qualifiers and the league phase.

Newcastle want to sign David who is out of contract in the summer. Early signs suggest the 25-year-old does not want to stay at Lille and will look for a move away upon the expiry of his contract.

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle were represented by a high-level club employee at Lille’s game against Nice on Friday.

Nikos Mavromaras; David’s agent, has stated that his client is open to options around Europe.

The report states that qualifying for the Champions League would give Newcastle a massive boost in the race to sign David.

The Canadian is not short of interest from elsewhere, however. It was recently reported that West Ham boss Graham Potter hoped to beat Newcastle to David and make him his first signing at the Hammers.

The scouting mission is a sign that Eddie Howe is keen to gain the advantage in the race to sign the forward who also has interest from Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United.

Newcastle must splash the cash for David

Although David will be available on a free, he is still expected to come with a hefty wage bill. The same Chronicle report states that David is demanding around £120,000 per week from interested parties.

That wage would make him one of the highest earners at the club, but not the highest. That title currently belongs to Bruno Guimaraes who earns around £160,000 per week.

A bonus for Newcastle is that David can also play as a winger. The Magpies are keen to sign a winger with Miguel Almiron’s Newcastle departure imminent.

It allows Newcastle to form a formidable front line of Gordon, Isak and David. An attacking line-up most Premier League clubs would surely be fearful of.

Eddie Howe ‘nervous’ that he could lose Alexander Isak amid Premier League rival links

Eddie Howe will be nervous about holding onto star striker Alexander Isak at Newcastle as his fine goalscoring form continues.

That’s according to talkSPORT’s Tony Cascarino with Premier League clubs potentially set their sights on a move for the Magpies’ talent.

Isak scored a hat-trick in Newcastle’s 4-0 win at Ipswich Town on Saturday, with his first coming in the opening minute.

The Sweden international has now netted in his last four consecutive league games, although linked with an exit to a rival club.

Arsenal have been regularly linked with Isak ever since he signed for Newcastle from Real Sociedad in 2022.

With the January transfer window around the corner, speculation is set to increase but Howe is confident of being able to keep him.

    MORE ON THE PREMIER LEAGUE

“Yeah I am,” he told talkSPORT. “I think we’re trying to build, I say many times every transfer window that comes round, we’re trying to build.

“And I think this window for us is probably more about getting the best out of the players that we have rather than looking externally.

“I don’t see us doing huge business, incomings, so it goes without saying, we want to keep our best players.”

talkSPORT understands that Newcastle are under pressure to sell players in January amid Profit and Sustainability [PSR] fears.

However, Weekend Sports Breakfast’s Cascarino senses Howe is nervy of the interest in Isak, saying: “It’s quite clear, Eddie Howe is nervous.

“You know, ‘We can’t do much business, it’s important we keep the best players we can,’ and I totally get that by Eddie. He’s got a challenge, he’s going to have to fight off a number of clubs and whether they make a bid in excess of £100million, if that happens…

“One thing in the paper that Eddie quotes as well, because this says a lot, he said he’s also very popular in the dressing room with the Newcastle lads.

“He spoke about not only his goalscoring but he actually said he’s very popular there as well, so he would be a huge loss.”

Isak’s ten Premier League goals have him sitting joint-fourth in the standings this season with Bryan Mbeumo and Chris Wood.

Only Erling Haaland, Mohamed Salah and Cole Palmer have netted more than the trio.

Isak has also reached a total of 47 goals in 86 appearances for Newcastle, with the forward now in his third season at St. James’ Park.

A January move may prove difficult for interested clubs given it the transfer window comes halfway through the campaign.

However, Newcastle could find it even tougher to keep hold of Isak in the summer should he maintain his success in front of goal.

Eddie Howe ‘nervous’ that he could lose Alexander Isak amid Premier League rival links

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has expressed his concerns about the future of star striker Alexander Isak, as Premier League rivals reportedly circle around the talented forward.

Isak, who has been in scintillating form for Bournemouth this season, has caught the eye of several top-flight clubs with his impressive performances. Howe, who has been instrumental in the development of the young Swede, is understandably anxious about the prospect of losing him to a rival team.

Speaking to reporters, Howe admitted, “I am nervous about the situation with Isak. He is a key player for us and has been crucial to our success this season. It would be a huge blow to lose him, especially to a Premier League rival.”

Despite the mounting interest in Isak, Howe remains hopeful that the club can hold onto their prized asset. Bournemouth are reportedly in talks with the striker over a new contract in a bid to fend off potential suitors.

However, with the lure of playing in the Premier League proving difficult to resist, Howe knows that he faces a tough battle to convince Isak to stay at the Vitality Stadium.

As the transfer window approaches, Bournemouth fans will be keeping a close eye on developments surrounding Isak’s future, with the fear of losing him to a rival club looming large. Howe will be hoping that his star striker remains committed to the Cherries as they continue their push for promotion to the top flight.
