  • Monster Hunter Wilds reveals a return of old-school wyverns

Expectant Monster Hunter Wilds were treated to a special gameplay preview on January 16, 2025, via IGN, increasing hype on one of the most anticipated upcoming Xbox games/upcoming PC games of this year. During this exclusive preview, IGN revealed that a classic monster from Monster Hunter’s past titles will be joining Monster Hunter Wilds’ list of monsters, and that beast is none other than Gravios.

It’s a giant Flying Wyvern-type monster that can be best described as a living, breathing mountain with legs and a body covered in an extremely thick, rocky hide that only the sharpest of weapons will be able to pierce through. Not only that, Gravios hits like a mountain rock slide as it attacks by stomping the ground with earth-shattering force and rolling around to crush its foes using its mammoth weight.

  • Monster Hunter Wilds: Gravios Returns in This Exclusive Gameplay – IGN First

Gravios is a hard-shelled monster that’s been deflecting our attacks since the original Monster Hunter, and it’s back in Monster Hunter Wilds’ Oilwell Basin. A few things about this foreboding, unexpected Flying Wyvern have changed, which you can see for yourself in the exclusive Gravios gameplay videos in this article.

Gravios is the sixth returning monster revealed for Monster Hunter Wilds, after Congalala, Yian Kut-Ku, Gypceros, and the quintessential Rathalos and Rathian. You can read all about how the Monster Hunter developers select monsters for each game in our in-depth interview.

As for Gravios, Monster Hunter Wilds director Yuya Tokuda said: “When we were thinking about a monster that would fit the Oilwell Basin environment and would not overlap in gameplay terms when looking at the overall ecosystem hierarchy, we realized we could reintroduce Gravios in a way that felt fresh to play, so we decided to bring it back this time.”

Historically, Gravios appears in volcanic areas in the Monster Hunter series. The Oilwell Basin fits that trope, especially during the Firespring inclemency, where burning lava can be seen in much of the area. The heat sure doesn’t bother this durable monster.

We last saw Gravios in Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, which you can see in action in the comparison video above. It’s definitely changed a bit, both visually and mechanically.

The monster now feels like it is actually there in that terrain.

“Of course, the details, textures, and other aspects of Gravios’ design have been greatly improved compared with previous titles,” explained Kaname Fujioka, executive director and art director for Monster Hunter Wilds. “While we maintained the hardness of its outer shell, we also had the team work hard on things like the depiction of the impact of Gravios’ laser-like attack when it hits the ground, which has been difficult to do up until now. The monster now feels like it is actually there in that terrain. We were able to express how the actions of the monster have a reaction on the terrain, and we worked very carefully on those elements.”

One of Gravios’ new attacks, where it shoots a laser directly down into the ground, creating an area of burning terrain, perfectly demonstrates the upgrade Fujioka refers to. Gravios has also adapted another “new” move: a poison gas attack, previously exclusive to its juvenile form, Basarios. The Monster Hunter developers did confirm that Basarios will not be joining Gravios in Wilds.

Gravios has other tricks up its sleeve, but we’ll let you discover those on your own. We did experience a potential softer side to Gravios – meaning, it was slightly easier to get through its tough hide, and we deflected less often than in previous versions.

Tokuda explains the technical reasons why this may have felt different to us: “In the past, we could only assign rough data to specify the consistency of the monster’s flesh, so if you didn’t hit the soft spots with weapons such as the Lance, you wouldn’t be able to deal damage. With the Great Sword, the hit detection is also large, so you could hit the hard parts of the flesh and end up bouncing right off. With Gravios in Wilds, attacks against its hard shell will still bounce off, but if you position yourself properly and aim for its backside you can more effectively deal damage. Weapons and monster flesh can now be gradated in a more granular way than in previous games, while Focus Mode makes it easier to aim, so advances in technology have helped us to refine many aspects of the gameplay experience while fighting Gravios.”

He continued: “In the past, there were technical issues that prevented us from assigning different skin hardness or toughness values to many different parts of a monster’s body. Because hit detection models were made using shapes like spheres and cylinders, the shape of the hit box did not always match the actual design of the monster’s body. But modern technology has allowed us to add hit detection in a way that matches the monster’s body. Including the Focus Mode, we felt that we finally had the technology to create a game where you could carefully watch a monster’s movements, find its weak points and then aim for them, so we took on the challenge this time.”

Do you welcome or shun the return of Gravios? Personally, I don’t know if I’ll ever recover from the trauma it inflicted while I tried to deliver Powderstones in the original Monster Hunter, but fighting it in Monster Hunter Wilds sure felt great.

  • Baker Mayfield, Danielle Hunter among players left out

Baker Mayfield, Danielle Hunter among players left out

A snub is in the eye of the beholder.

Now that the 2025 Pro Bowl Games rosters have been announced, discussion and debate about players from both conferences will abound. Some will be aghast at an omission from the Games. Others will take solace that a particular player or two finally garnered deserved attention. Everyone has their own list — it’s only natural.

With 88 total spots broken up between two conferences and each position being capped, it’s impossible for every worthy player to be honored. There is a zero percent chance of everyone having the same 88 names. That’s why “snub” lists like this exist.

In undertaking this endeavor yet again, I personally am less offended by players left off. Instead, I’d like to use this opportunity to highlight those men who have had outstanding years and might have just missed the cut. Some on my list will be outliers to a greater degree than others. The game of “who would you replace” is wholly unfair to the talented players who did have their names on the initial rosters. It’s also not necessary. This is an all-star event for fun, not a cabinet position — and a swath of players on the initial roster will be replaced, some due to making the Super Bowl, others because of injuries or for other reasons.

Before I get to my list, know that there is one name you won’t see below, and you can consider him a snubbed snub, if you must: Patrick Mahomes.

The quarterback of the No. 1-seeded Chiefs has basically been a shoo-in for the Pro Bowl, earning a nod in every season since becoming the team’s starter in 2018. Given Mahomes’ standing as the back-to-back Super Bowl MVP guiding Kansas City to a 15-1 record, you could easily make a case for him to be a Pro Bowler again in 2025. Yet, by all standards outside of the win column — which surely Mahomes would say is all he cares about — this has been a down year for the all-world talent.

With Mahomes set to sit out a Week 18 contest against the Broncos that is meaningless to the Chiefs, he will have set career lows (going back to 2018) in passing yards (3,928), success rate (50.7%, per Pro Football Reference), yards per attempt (6.8) and yards per game (245.5) while tying for his lowest mark in TD passes (26). For most QBs, those numbers would be fine, if not excellent. For Mahomes, they’re just OK. It makes his ability to deliver clutch plays in the crucible of big moments all the more impressive.

Mahomes’ omission also speaks to the insane level at which Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson are currently playing. Allen is leading a juggernaut Bills offense with both his arm and legs. He’s creating fewer negative plays (taking just 14 total sacks so far) than ever. Burrow leads pretty much every statistical category and would probably be the MVP if not for the sieve-like defense holding Cincinnati back. And Jackson is having a better season than he did in 2023, when earned his second career MVP.

I wouldn’t detest anyone who insists that leaving off the QB of a 15-1 club is a snub; Mahomes simply didn’t make my list this season.

Baker Mayfield, Danielle Hunter among players left out of Pro Bowl

The Pro Bowl rosters have been announced, and while many deserving players have been selected to represent their respective conferences, there are always a few notable snubs. This year, two players who have been left out of the Pro Bowl conversation are Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield and Minnesota Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter.

Mayfield, who has been leading the Browns to a successful season with his impressive playmaking abilities, was not chosen to play in the Pro Bowl. Despite throwing for over 3,000 yards and 20 touchdowns this season, Mayfield was overlooked in favor of other quarterbacks in the AFC.

Similarly, Hunter has been a dominant force on the Vikings’ defensive line, recording 14.5 sacks and 52 tackles this season. However, the Pro Bowl selection committee opted to go with other defensive ends in the NFC, leaving Hunter out of the mix.

While being left out of the Pro Bowl can be disappointing for these players, they can take solace in the fact that their contributions to their teams have not gone unnoticed by fans and analysts alike. Mayfield and Hunter will continue to showcase their talents on the field and prove why they are deserving of Pro Bowl recognition in the future.

  • De’Andre Hunter Making Strong Case for NBA Sixth Man of the Year

De’Andre Hunter Making Strong Case for NBA Sixth Man of the Year

In the first five seasons of De’Andre Hunter’s NBA career, the former UVA basketball champion started in 237 of the 263 games he played. This season, Hunter has been moved to a bench role, starting just two of the 20 games he has played in so far this year.

How is Hunter handling that move to the bench?

Well, he’s currently one of the frontrunners for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award and is having by far the best season of his professional basketball career.

Hunter is averaging 20.3 points per game, nearly five points better than his previous career-high of 15.6 points per game last season. He is shooting 44.0% from three-point range; his previous best in that category was 38.5% last season. He is shooting 48.7% from the floor and 89.9% from the free throw line, which are both career-high marks as well. Hunter is very close to qualifying for the prestigious 50-40-90 club. He has scored 25 or more points in three of his last four games and has scored at least 20 points 13 times this season, most among all bench players in the NBA.

With Hunter thriving off the bench, the Atlanta Hawks are 16-15 overall and are currently the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference.

Here are the current odds for the 2025 NBA Sixth Man of the Year Award according to BetMGM:

    1. Payton Pritchard (-290)
    2. De’Andre Hunter (+600)
    3. Santi Aldama (+1600)
    4. Amen Thompson (+2500)
    5. Buddy Hield (+3500)

There is a lot of season left, of course, but the oddsmakers seem to see this as a two-horse race right now between De’Andre Hunter and Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard. Hunter and Pritchard faced off during Virginia’s run to the 2019 National Champion, with UVA defeating Oregon 53-49 in the Sweet Sixteen.

Here are the stats for the two players at this point in the season. It should be noted that Pritchard has played in 10 more games than Hunter, who missed time with an injury. But both players should be eligible for the Sixth Man of the Year Award, as the only rule for that award is that the player comes off the bench in less games than he starts in the regular season.

    Payton Pritchard: 15.3 ppg, 3.2 apg, 3.7 rpg, 46.7% FG, 41.4% 3pt FG, 28.7 mpg
    De’Andre Hunter: 20.3 ppg, 1.3 apg, 4.1 rpg, 48.7% FG, 44.0% 3pt FG, 28.2 mpg

Hunter is averaging more points per game (by five points) than Pritchard and is shooting better from the floor and from beyond the arc in slightly less minutes, but essentially the same amount of playing time. Hunter has better numbers, but Pritchard is on the better team, as the reigning NBA Champion Celtics are currently second in the Eastern Conference at 22-8.

There is a long way to go, but with the way De’Andre Hunter is playing right now, he could become the second former Wahoo to win NBA Sixth Man of the Year. Malcolm Brogdon won the award in the 2022-2023 NBA season with the Celtics, becoming the first UVA alum to ever win the award and just the second player in NBA history to win both the NBA Rookie of the Year and Sixth Man of the Year awards in the same career.

De’Andre Hunter Making Strong Case for NBA Sixth Man of the Year

Atlanta Hawks forward De’Andre Hunter has been turning heads this season with his impressive play off the bench, making a strong case for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.

Hunter, who was the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, has been a key contributor for the Hawks this season, averaging 16.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game. He has provided a much-needed scoring punch off the bench for Atlanta, helping them to a strong start to the season.

One of Hunter’s biggest strengths is his versatility on both ends of the floor. He is a solid defender who can guard multiple positions, and he has shown the ability to score in a variety of ways, whether it be driving to the basket, knocking down three-pointers, or creating his own shot.

With his strong play this season, Hunter has emerged as one of the top candidates for the Sixth Man of the Year award. He has been a consistent performer for the Hawks, coming up big in crucial moments and providing a spark off the bench.

If Hunter can continue his strong play throughout the season, he will undoubtedly be in the running for the Sixth Man of the Year award. His impact off the bench has been instrumental in the Hawks’ success so far, and he will be a key player to watch as the season progresses.
