Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz will face off against Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac in a Group B tie at the 2025 United Cup on Wednesday, January 1.
Hurkacz had a decent campaign in 2024 until facing fitness issues. The Pole won the Estoril Open and finished runner-up at the Terra Wortmann Open as he reached a career-high ranking of No. 6 in August.
However, after a picking up a knee injury at Wimbledon, Hurkacz suffered a slight collapse. The Pole lost five of his last nine matches of the season. His woes continued at the United Cup as he lost his opening fixture 5-7, 3-6 to Norway’s Casper Ruud.
Meanwhile, Machac enjoyed a steady rise up the rankings throughout the season. From being ranked No. 78 in January, the Czech reached his career-best ranking of No. 25 by October.
Machac’s most notable performance came at the Geneva Open, where he secured four consecutive wins including a semifinal victory over Novak Djokovic to reach the final. He lost to Casper Ruud in the summit clash. Machac faced the Norwegian in his opener at the United Cup and lost 6-7(6), 7-5, 4-6.

Iga Swiatek sent Poland soaring into its second straight United Cup final by battling past one of her most challenging rivals in their semi-final tie in Sydney on Saturday.
In a clash between Top 10 players and Grand Slam champions, Swiatek bested Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina 7-6(5), 6-4, sealing an insurmountable 2-0 lead for the 2024 runners-up. Hubert Hurkacz had queued Swiatek up by giving Poland the 1-0 lead with a swift victory over Alexander Shevchenko.
“I think that’s the first time I was able to win with Elena on a faster surface, so it means a lot. I for sure didn’t start well, I felt like I [was] on the hand-brake a bit,” Swiatek said.
“I wanted to really work and change the momentum, and I’m happy that I kind of did that at the last possible chance in the first set. I kind of told myself that I’m not going to miss anymore, and I’m happy because for sure it was tough. It’s always tough against Elena.”
One of the rare players who regularly troubles five-time major champion Swiatek, 2022 Wimbledon champion Rybakina came into Saturday’s match having won four of their six previous meetings. Indeed, Rybakina’s deep, imposing hitting in the early stages again troubled Swiatek, who misfired on multiple forehands to cede a 5-3 lead to the Kazakh.
Staring down another deficit against Rybakina, Swiatek clicked into gear, accelerating through rally groundstrokes and breaking back for 5-5 on her fourth break point of that game. Swiatek then had two set points at 6-5, but Rybakina powered through a 13-minute game to hold on and scrap into the tie-break.
After the first eight points of the breaker went to the returner, Rybakina fired two consecutive backhands long to give Swiatek another pair of set points. Swiatek converted her fourth chance after 72 minutes to narrowly close out the first set.
After missing out on two early break points in the second set, Swiatek took control for good by breaking Rybakina at love for a 4-3 lead. Swiatek had to use exceptional defense to save one break point in the final game, and the former World No.1 held on for the win. Swiatek now holds a 12-1 singles record at United Cup.
In the day’s opening match, Hurkacz continued his short and long-term redemption at the United Cup by dismissing Shevchenko 6-3, 6-2.
After losing both his singles matches in group play to Casper Ruud and Tomas Machac, Hurkacz backed up his quarter-final win over Billy Harris with a 58-minute victory over the Kazakhstani to set things up for World No. 2 teammate Iga Swiatek, who now plays former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
Hurkacz last year held two championship points in the tournament final against Alexander Zverev only to see the current World No. 2 rally to a comeback win and then team with Laura Siegemund to beat him and Swiatek in the deciding mixed doubles.
“The last match here gave me a little bit of confidence and I’ve been playing better with every single match,” said Hurkacz, who is No. 16 in the PIF ATP Rankings.
After struggling against the weight of shot in his defeats to Ruud and Machac, Hurkacz was the one to dictate from the baseline against Shevchenko. He was also dominated on serve, putting 76 per cent of his first deliveries into play, winning 80 per cent of first-serve points and 73 per cent of second-serve points according to Infosys ATP Stats.
Shevchenko played his best tennis early in the second set when he had more success moving Hurkacz out of the centre of the court, but after missing a 30-all opportunity in the fourth game, he made three unforced errors to get broken to love in the following game and never recovered.
Hurkacz now leads Shevchenko 4-0 in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

The top-seeded US pairing of Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff will start as hot favourites against Czechia’s Tomas Machac and Karolina Muchova in Saturday night’s semi-final. But whichever of the nations make it to Sunday’s decider, they will face a fierce challenge from Poland.
Hurkacz lost to Casper Ruud and Machac during the United Cup group stage, but has been on fire since. The world No 16 defeated Billy Harris in straight sets during Poland’s quarter-final win over Great Britain, and then sent down 10 aces to one against Shevchenko on Saturday.
“From every single match I’m playing better and better. I’m happy with my performance,” Hurkacz said.

Swiatek broke back, and then had two set points on a Rybakina service game that lasted more than 13 minutes. Rybakina eventually managed to hold, but Swiatek was too good in the tiebreak, taking the set in 72 minutes.
Swiatek broke to love in the seventh game of the second set and then saved a late break point to seal the 123-minute victory.
“I for sure didn’t start well. I felt like I was on a hand-break a bit,” Swiatek said. “I knew I had to do something because this match was going to go to waste.
“I changed the momentum and I’m happy I did that in the last possible chance in the first set. It means a lot to me to be able to play today, especially after such an intense day [two days earlier in the quarter-final win over Great Britain].
“It’s not easy to recover when you’re going back to the hotel at 1am and falling asleep at 5am. So this win makes me really proud.”

Great Britain’s hopes of reaching the United Cup semi-finals rely on Katie Boulter beating five-time major champion Iga Swiatek after Billy Harris narrowly lost to former world number six Hubert Hurkacz.
Harris, 29, pushed 16th-ranked Hurkacz in the opening match of the best-of-three tie before going down 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 in Sydney.
The late-blooming Harris, who is ranked 125th in the world after making huge strides in the past two years, was aiming to give Britain a platform to reach the last four with the biggest win of his career.
His defeat means 28-year-old Boulter must beat Swiatek later on Thursday to tee up a deciding mixed doubles match.
Harris has been playing as Britain’s leading man in the mixed gender team event with Jack Draper nursing a hip injury and Cameron Norrie starting the season at an ATP event in Hong Kong.
While he served strongly, Harris was unable to break 2021 Wimbledon semi-finalist Hurkacz and fell short in the decisive moments.
A tight first set saw neither player face a break point until the Briton fought off two opportunities for Hurkacz in a tense 12th game, eventually hanging on to his serve to force a tie-break.
A costly error from Harris – a miscue long with an overhead – handed an early mini-break to Hurkacz, whose pedigree at the highest level was demonstrated by the way he used that to clinically secured the lead.
Despite falling behind, Harris showed his mental toughness in the second set. He reset quickly to create three break points in the second game, only for Hurkacz to fight back from 0-40 with five huge serves getting him out of trouble.
