Katy Perry is leaving American Idol in good hands.

After the “Dark Horse” singer announced that season 22 of the singing competition show would be her last in February 2024, fans wondered who would replace her at the judge’s table. Then, in August, Carrie Underwood announced her return to the show — but this time as a judge.

“She was born on that show. I think she knows how to steer it,” Perry — who recently announced her Lifetimes Tour — tells PEOPLE of the “Before He Cheats” singer.

The “Hot N Cold” performer, 40, adds, “She actually truly knows… What it feels like to be in their shoes. We could only metaphorically feel that as judges.”

Underwood won the fourth season of the singing competition show in 2005. Now, 20 years later, she’ll be sitting at the judges table with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.

“As artists, we’ve been in some sort of their shoes, but she has lived every single day,” the “Firework” singer says. “So I think she’s going to have a lot to offer anyone that’s willing to listen.”

Perry announced her decision to leave the show during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live in February 2024. At the time, she explained that it was her time to move on and teased new music on the way.

“I think this probably will be my last show, my last season for Idol. I mean I love Idol so much. It’s connected me with the heart of America, but I feel like I need to go out and feel that pulse to my own beat, you what I’m saying Jimmy?”

“I love the show so much but I wanna go and see the world and maybe bring new music,” Perry added.

Shortly after her announcement, the “Hello” singer, 75, also appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and shared that he wasn’t “mad” about Perry’s decision.

“The reason I love coming on the show with you and the reason I’m doing American Idol is because I have 400 years of stories and a life in the music business. I have things that I’ve done. And so when Katy says, ‘I want to go and create some stories,’ remember, she’s young. But the point is that you have to take some time and actually be an artist,” he said, adding that it “makes sense.”

Meanwhile, in an April 2024 interview on the radio show Taste of Country Nights, Bryan, 48, admitted he “had heard whispers that she was thinking about it — it wasn’t like a huge shock.”

“It’s been a good run with Katy, and she and I have developed a great friendship and to work alongside her,” he said.

He also noted that he and the “Teenage Dream” singer plan to stay in touch after Idol is over. “She knows that no matter what her next endeavors are, that she can pick up the phone and call me and check in and say hey,” Bryan said, adding that she can even come to him for “fishing advice.”

  • Katy Perry in touch with Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie after ‘American Idol’

Katy Perry confirmed she stays in touch with her fellow “American Idol” judges, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie, after quitting the show last year.

“I miss them so much,” the “Firework” singer said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Wednesday. “I do, actually. Hi, Luke! Hi, Lionel!”

When Jimmy Kimmel asked Perry, 40, whether Bryan, 48, and Richie, 75, were “still reaching out” to her, she replied, “Yeah, of course. Of course. All the time.”

That said, the Grammy nominee acknowledged the pair “probably have a new text chain” with Carrie Underwood, who will join the judging panel for the ABC singing competition’s upcoming season.

“I think it’s perfect,” she shared of the “Before He Cheats” singer, 41, being named her replacement.

Perry even went so far as to promote “Idol” despite no longer being on it, telling viewers, “It’s coming out in March, so you gotta watch!”

The pop star announced on “Kimmel” in February 2024 that she was leaving the series after seven seasons to embark on her “Lifetimes” tour, which kicks off its US leg in May.

The news came on the heels of Perry receiving backlash from some viewers for harshly judging contestants in early 2023, which a source reminded Page Six was simply part of “her job” as “a mentor.”

“Katy isn’t fazed by the backlash,” the insider shared at the time, noting that the “Teenage Dream” performer “has a unique sense of humor that may not always translate well on camera, but she never has any ill intent.”

ABC later revealed that Season 4 winner Underwood, who sang at President Trump’s inauguration earlier this month, will take Perry’s seat.

“As a former ‘Idol’ and dynamic musical force, she brings a remarkably unique perspective to one of the most popular shows on television. This is a full-circle moment,” Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich said in a statement in August 2024.

“American Idol” Season 23 premieres Sunday, March 9, at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Katy Perry stays in touch with Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie after ‘American Idol’ as they continue their friendship beyond the show. The trio formed a close bond while serving as judges on the popular singing competition and have remained connected even after the cameras stopped rolling.

From sharing updates on their personal lives to discussing their favorite music, Katy, Luke, and Lionel have maintained a strong connection post-‘American Idol’. Fans are thrilled to see their favorite judges staying in touch and supporting each other in their respective careers.

Whether it’s catching up over a video call or sending each other funny memes, it’s clear that the camaraderie between Katy, Luke, and Lionel is genuine and long-lasting. Their friendship is a true testament to the lasting impact of their time together on ‘American Idol’.

  • Luke Bryan Befriends Singer After 7 Unsuccessful Tryouts for ‘Idol’

Though singer-songwriter Lainey Wilson has become one of the hottest country stars on the planet, it wasn’t long ago she was striving to get noticed in Nashville and auditioning seven times for “American Idol.”

Now, nearly four years after finally scoring her first Billboard country music hit with “Things a Man Oughta Know,” one of the cool twists of fate for Wilson has been the close friendship she’s forged with “Idol” judge Luke Bryan, she told CMT’s Cody Alan on January 25, 2025.

Shortly after performing on the season 21 “Idol” finale with Jelly Roll in May 2023, Wilson told Country Countdown USA, “I finally made it on ‘American Idol. I tried out 7 times. I took the long way around, but finally made it on ‘American Idol.’ I never made it through. I never made it past the first round.”

But Wilson’s getting last laugh, from winning the 2024 Grammy for Best Country Album to her friendship with Bryan, who was shocked to learn the show had passed her up so many times.

Lainey Wilson Says Luke Bryan Will Now Answer Her Calls at Any Hour

Though Wilson never got a callback from “Idol” producers while she was striving to hit it big, she said Bryan will now answer her calls at any time. During an interview on “CMT Hot 20,” as seen in the above clip, she told host Cody Alan that she has forged a special connection with the country superstar.

“Luke has become a dear friend of mine, he really has,” Wilson told Alan. “He’s a cheerleader of mine, and he’s somebody I could go to — I could call him and it does not matter what time of day and he would answer the phone. He’s a good dude.”

Over the last several months, the country stars have spent a good deal of time together, first co-hosting the 2024 CMA Awards with Bryan and Peyton Manning. They were also both part of CBS’ New Year’s Eve countdown show that former “Idol” judge Keith Urban hosted in Nashville, and in mid-January, Wilson was part of Bryan’s 10th annual Crash My Playa music festival in Mexico.

But in addition to getting close with Wilson, Bryan has also become good friends with her boyfriend, former NFL player Delvin “Duck” Hodges.

“I mean, anytime I’ve been around Lainey,” Bryan told ABC News Radio in November, “she’s just kind of one of the boys and one of the girls, you know? She’s just a great person to be around and (I’ve started) to spend a little more time with her boyfriend, Duck. He and I, we chat a couple of times a week. So, yeah, we’re all family now.”

Luke Bryan Admits ‘We Don’t Always Get It Right’ on ‘Idol’

When Bryan, who’s been a judge on “Idol” since 2018, learned that Wilson was rejected seven times by “Idol” producers before her rise to fame, he was shocked.

In November 2023, Bryan told Country Countdown USA, “I didn’t know that. That was the first time I heard that, but I’ll go see my producers today and find out what happened! I’m glad she didn’t take the ‘Idol’ letdown to heart. It also shows we don’t always get it right.”

Wilson told Country Countdown USA that she also tried out for “The Voice,” with no success, but insisted, “I’m grateful my story ended the way that it did.”

In May 2023, the “Heart Like a Truck” hitmaker told People, “I’ve known that this is my calling, and there’s nothing else that I want to do, that I can do. I’ve always just been like, ‘No plan B, this is it.’ I feel like that time that I’ve had to prepare, I don’t know… If it happened when I wanted it to, I don’t know that I would have been ready.”

Country music star Luke Bryan has proven once again that he’s not just a talented musician, but also a kind-hearted friend. After witnessing a singer audition for ‘American Idol’ seven times without success, Bryan decided to step in and offer his support.

The singer, who has not been named, had been trying out for the popular singing competition for years without making it past the initial rounds. Feeling discouraged and ready to give up on his dream, he crossed paths with Bryan at a local music event.

Moved by the singer’s determination and passion for music, Bryan struck up a conversation and quickly realized that this aspiring artist had a unique talent that deserved to be recognized. Determined to help him achieve his dreams, Bryan took the singer under his wing and offered to mentor him.

Since then, the two have been working together to fine-tune the singer’s skills and prepare him for his next audition. With Bryan’s guidance and support, the singer is feeling more confident than ever and is ready to give ‘American Idol’ another shot.

Luke Bryan’s act of kindness and friendship serves as a reminder that success in the music industry is not just about talent, but also about having the right support system. We can’t wait to see this talented singer shine on the ‘American Idol’ stage, thanks to Luke Bryan’s friendship and mentorship.

The American Idol alum—who was runner-up to Scotty McCreery on season 10 of the ABC show—is expecting her first baby with husband Cam Arnold. And she revealed the big news in her latest “Those Kind of Women” music video.

“It’s all about the women who raised me,” Lauren told People in an interview published Jan. 22. “I was really fortunate to be raised around a bunch of very strong women. And when we cut this song, when we recorded this song, I was not pregnant nor thinking about becoming pregnant.”

But when it came time to film the music video, it was the perfect opportunity to show off her growing baby bump while paying tribute to those who played a crucial role in her childhood. And now that she’s expecting one of her own, the “Road Less Traveled” singer shared how much her pregnancy has changed her already.

    More from E! Online

“[I didn’t know] I can love something that I haven’t even really held yet,” she explained. “I feel the baby inside me, and it’s kicking me and doing all of the things. It’s like I was the Grinch or something, and my heart grew.”

And for the couple, who tied the knot in Nashville nearly one year ago, this new chapter of their lives has only brought them closer together.

“My love for him grew that day of getting married, and then finding out we were having a baby together,” the Georgia native said. “Walking through this experience with him has been unbelievable.”

“I’m looking forward to watching my husband be a dad,” she continued. “He is so obsessed with our animals; he’s a big nurturer in general. In fact, when I was getting ready to marry him, that was something that I knew would be one of the best things about being his wife, was being able to parent with him.”

But as she admires how Cam is embracing fatherhood, Lauren can’t help but think about her father, who passed away suddenly in July.

“I do think that my dad passed away and got up in heaven and was like, ‘Hey, we got to work something out down there to send the family something good,’” she shared. “And it has been such an unexpected blessing. We obviously still talk about and are dealing with the grief of my dad, but this baby has healed a lot of that for us—like it’s a little piece of my dad that will live on.”

  • Ryan Seacrest Debuts New Look In ‘American Idol’ Trailer

Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors

Ryan Seacrest just shocked fans with an unexpected transformation that proves the most subtle changes can make the biggest difference.

In a clip promoting the 23rd season of American Idol shared to Instagram on Wednesday January 8, Seacrest debuted a drastically different look that caught viewers by surprise.

Known for his sharp, professional style — often opting for a suit and a clean-shaven face — the longtime host surprised fans by wearing a casual button down shirt, jeans, and, most notably, facial hair, along with a longer hairstyle overall. This new look was a far cry from the polished image fans are used to seeing on shows like Wheel of Fortune, where Seacrest, 50, sticks to his dapper, clean-cut persona.

The trailer, which also featured Seacrest’s mom, Constance, shows a sweet interaction as his mom humorously mimics his American Idol introduction. Fans flooded the comments section on Instagram, many expressing shock and others offering compliments.

“~ Ryan with the facial hair!!” said one, while another praised the producer, saying, “Love the beard and longer hair.”

“Bearded @ryanseacrest wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card ,” another humorously added, while another said the TV personality to shave, saying, “That beard has got to go Ryan!”

Other folks revealed that they would no longer be watching the longtime singing competition since Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood will be serving as a judge this season, replacing Katy Perry. Underwood has recently come under fire for her alleged support of President Donald Trump after she agreed to perform at his inauguration on Monday, January 20.

“This show is to me thanks to @carrieunderwood,” said one. Another seemingly agreed, commenting, Y’all don’t have some kind of contract that prevents Carrie from doing…. this? Won’t be watching anymore in this house.”

In a statement, Underwood revealed that she loves the country, and is honored for the opportunity. “I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future,” she said to TMZ after the news was announced on Monday, January 13.

American Idol season 23 will premiere on ABC on March 9.

  • Ryan Seacrest stuns fans with ‘quite different’ look in ‘American Idol’ promo

    A hairy situation.

Ryan Seacrest shocked fans after “American Idol” posted a promo video on Instagram showing the TV host rocking a look that is “quite different” from how he usually presents himself.

In the clip shared on Instagram Jan. 8, the perennially clean-shaven Seacrest sports a well-manicured beard along with a wavy hairstyle that is longer and looser than his typical coiffure.

His wardrobe contrasts with his usual “Idol” image as well. Rather than a suit and tie, Seacrest wears beige suede Chelsea boots, light-wash jeans and a pale olive green short-sleeved floral button down-shirt (worn with the top buttons undone).

Dressed in his more casual ensemble, Seacrest stands in front of a large screen in the clip as he’s about to record a promotional spot for “Idol” when his mother Constance appears on the screen to give him a “sweet surprise!”

An off-guard Seacrest turns around as his mom says, “Surprise! It’s your biggest fan.” Laughing, the “Wheel of Fortune” host then asks, “Mom, what show is this?”

Borrowing Seacrest’s signature intro line and dramatic pause, Constance responds, “This … is ‘American Idol.’”

A smiling Seacrest closes out the clip saying, “Can’t beat it.”

Fans of the series jumped to the comments section to weigh in on the TV mogul’s look.

“Bearded @ryanseacrest wasn’t on my 2025 bingo card,” one fan wrote.

“Looking quite different there Ryan @ryanseacrest but still charming as always,” another chimed in.

Someone else commented, “Ryan with the facial hair!! But how sweet was that?!! ~ ,” prompting the “American Idol” account to reply, “The cutest and scruffiest moment! ”

Still others effused about Ryan’s new look, writing, “Love the beard and longer hair,” “So adorable,” “Looking awesome,” and “I like the beard! Very handsome!”

However, one wary commenter doubted the clip was recorded recently.

“This must be old, he doesn’t have a beard now,” the person said. Confirming the person’s suspicions, the “Idol” account replied, “It’s a throwback!”

It’s not clear when exactly the clip was recorded or if it was even recorded specifically for the show’s upcoming 23rd season, which debuts March 9 on ABC.

Seacrest has had a beard in the past. In November 2020, the multi-hyphenate shared a scruffy long-haired selfie on Instagram, captioning the snap, “Post workout. Am I doing this long hair thing right @shawnmendes?”

One month earlier, the radio host talked about his facial hair with Kelly Ripa on “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (he left the show in April 2023).

“Do you notice anything different?” Seacrest asked Ripa, 54, on the daytime talkshow.

“You mean your beard?” Ripa asked back. “I noticed it last week. You’ve decided to color your beard. I don’t mind a dark beard. I don’t mind it at all.”

She then quipped, “But it takes on a sort of a, like, well-groomed pirate look.”

After Seacrest laughed at the remark, Ripa continued insisting that she “didn’t mind it.”

“’I don’t mind’ is not necessarily the compliment one goes for,” he retorted.

It appears some fans had the same reaction to Ryan’s beard in the recent “American Idol” Instagram post.

Summing up the opinions of many of the beard’s detractors, one person wrote, “That beard has got to go Ryan.”

Many fans took to social media to express their thoughts on Seacrest’s transformation, with some praising his bold new look and others feeling nostalgic for his classic style.

The Wheel of Fortune host also wore a tropical print button-down shirt with jeans and tan boots, a change from his usual suit or business casual attire.

His mom, Connie Seacrest, surprised him with a message in the video.

“Surprise, it’s your biggest fan,” she said in the video, as Ryan turned around to face the screen in shock.

American Idol will return for season 23 on March 9 with a new addition to the long-running singing competition series. New judge Carrie Underwood will be joining Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie on the judging panel for the very first time. The country music songstress is replacing Katy Perry after her departure from the series.

Carrie, 41, won season 4 of American Idol in 2005. She’s since taken over the country music scene with hits like “Before He Cheats,” “Blown Away,” “Jesus, Take the Wheel” and more.

Ryan shared his enthusiasm for welcoming Carrie back onto the show two decades after her American Idol win.

“It’s a full-circle moment to go from announcing you as the winner of [American Idol] 20 years ago to now welcoming you to the judge’s table,” he wrote on Instagram. “Welcome home, @carrieunderwood !”

In October 2024, an insider dished to Life & Style about what was going on behind the scenes ahead of the American Idol’s season 23 premiere.

“Everyone’s glad Carrie’s joined the panel,” an insider told the outlet. “She’s not only a huge talent who contributes so much to the show but she’s a sweetheart to boot, but Ryan’s taking his idolatry to a crazy level.”

“She’s quite nervous and wants to do her best job and Ryan’s appointed himself Carrie’s guiding light,” the source added. “She’s his favorite, he gives her most if not all his attention, when she speaks, he’s all ears.”

The source went on to say that Lionel, 75, and Luke, 48, were both “spellbound by Carrie” and that Ryan is “determined to make Carrie a success” on the show as a judge.

Fans of the hit singing competition show, “American Idol,” were left stunned and bewildered after seeing the latest promo featuring host Ryan Seacrest. In the promo, Seacrest appeared nearly unrecognizable, leaving viewers questioning if it was really him.

Many fans took to social media to express their shock and concern over Seacrest’s appearance, with some speculating that he may have undergone plastic surgery or had other cosmetic procedures done. Others wondered if the promo had been altered or if Seacrest was simply not feeling his best that day.

Regardless of the reason behind Seacrest’s different look, fans couldn’t help but feel uneasy seeing their beloved host looking so different. Some even went as far as to say that they missed the old Ryan Seacrest and hoped that he would return to his usual self soon.

As the buzz around Seacrest’s appearance continues to grow, fans are eagerly awaiting the new season of “American Idol” to see if Seacrest’s look has changed or if it was just a one-time thing. Until then, the mystery of Seacrest’s nearly unrecognizable appearance remains unsolved.

  • How Billy Idol almost spearheaded a cinematic revolution

Few singers cut quite as iconic a silhouette as Billy Idol. The man behind ‘White Wedding’ and ‘Rebel Yell’ is just as famous for his long leather coats and spiky blonde hair as he is for any of his songs. His image was a massive part of his success in the 1980s, given, of course, that his videos were regular fixtures on MTV.

Idol’s memorable visage has also appeared in a few films over the years. He had a small role in Mad Dog Time, featuring Diane Lane, Richard Dreyfuss, and Jeff Goldblum. More notably, he had a memorable cameo in the Adam Sandler film The Wedding Singer as part of a group of passengers on a plane who convinced the main character to go after the girl of his dreams. He also very nearly ended up in one of the most famous films of all time – James Cameron’s action classic, Terminator 2: Judgment Day.

During an interview with Empire, Cameron revealed that Robert Patrick was his only choice for the part of the T-1000, with one notable exception. “The only notion that I entertained seriously, up to and including doing a screen test, which I actually found recently – it actually exists – was Billy Idol,” he said. “I was fascinated by Billy Idol’s physical look. I remembered the lesson of Arnold, and the lesson of Arnold is, ‘What’s that face telling you?’ He had a kind of sneering, sinister quality. It was a bit stylised, but in the right context, with the right direction and the right lighting, this could be interesting.”

Unfortunately, fate had other ideas for Cameron, Idol, and the project. In 1990, the rock star was on his motorcycle when, after running a red light, he got hit by a car. The accident left him with severe damage to one of his legs, which was very nearly amputated. Though his limb was saved, he had lost almost all of his mobility. A planned appearance in Oliver Stone’s upcoming biopic of The Doors was scrapped, as were any plans of him playing the liquid metal assassin.

“He wouldn’t be able to walk without a limp,” Cameron said. “That didn’t work. So then I met Robert [Patrick], and once I met Robert, I really focused on him.”

Had Idol not had his accident and gotten the part, his legacy would be entirely different today. Terminator 2 was the most expensive movie ever made when it was released in 1991, with a large portion of that money going towards its groundbreaking special effects. The T-1000’s ability to transform from solid to liquid was possibly due to the work of legendary VFX artist Dennis Muren, who harnessed the potential of CGI to create something audiences had never seen before.

“I was following what we were doing with the CGI group, and I did the ‘Young Sherlock Holmes’ show a few years before just to see what it was like, but I never really understood it,” Muren explained to Tech Radar. “So I took a year off work and got a massive textbook, about 1,800 pages long, and I sat in the local coffee shop here in California, and I read it.”

The end result of Muren’s hard work was a movie that demonstrated the power of computer graphics over traditional visual effects. Without the success of Terminator 2, the movie industry as we know it would look a whole lot different.

If Idol hadn’t run that red light, he would have become the face that changed cinema forever. He is still a legend in his own right, with plenty of memorable contributions to culture to look back on, but this has got to sting every single time he’s reminded of it.

Billy Idol, the iconic punk rock musician known for hits like “Rebel Yell” and “White Wedding,” almost spearheaded a cinematic revolution in the 1980s.

In the mid-80s, Idol was approached to star in a film that would have combined his signature punk rock style with cutting-edge special effects and a futuristic storyline. The film, tentatively titled “Cyberpunk,” was set to be directed by renowned filmmaker Ridley Scott and would have showcased Idol as a rebellious cyborg fighting against a corrupt government in a dystopian future.

Unfortunately, due to scheduling conflicts and creative differences, the project ultimately fell through and never came to fruition. However, the idea of combining music, fashion, and technology in a visually stunning film was ahead of its time and could have potentially paved the way for a new wave of cinematic storytelling.

While Billy Idol may not have become a movie star in the traditional sense, his brief foray into the world of film almost led to a groundbreaking collaboration that could have revolutionized the way we perceive and experience movies. Who knows what could have been if “Cyberpunk” had made it to the big screen? But one thing’s for sure – Billy Idol’s impact on the entertainment industry will always be felt, both on stage and potentially on the silver screen.
