Tennessee basketball injury, roster vs Florida: Igor Milicic Jr out
Igor Milicic Jr. is out for Tennessee basketball against Florida with flu-like symptoms.
The No. 8 Vols (17-4, 4-4 SEC) are down to seven available scholarship players against the No. 6 Gators (18-2, 5-2) on Saturday (noon ET, ESPN) at Food City Center.
Guard Zakai Zeigler is also out against the Gators with a right knee injury. He was injured late in the first half against Kentucky on Tuesday. He returned to play all 20 second-half minutes
Milicic did not practice Friday due to illness. He was listed as probable on the Friday SEC injury report then upgraded to available two hours before tipoff, but his status changed as he did not go through warmups. The 6-foot-10 forward is averaging 10.4 points and a team-leading 8.1 rebounds.
Darlinstone Dubar and Jordan Gainey are starting in place of Milicic and Zeigler, respectively. Bishop Boswell and Cade Phillips are the only reserves.

The Vols opened the season with 11 scholarship players. Sophomore forward J.P. Estrella had season-ending foot surgery in November and sophomore guard Cam Carr elected to leave the team in late December, dropping that number to nine and leaving Tennessee susceptible to Saturday’s situation.
Tennessee lost 73-43 to Florida on Dec. 7, its first loss this season after opening 14-0 for the second time in program history.

NEW YORK — Igor Shesterkin made 20 saves en route to a shutout, and even entered into a fight behind his own net in the third period, as the New York Rangers blanked the Ottawa Senators 5-0 on Tuesday night.
With 12:51 remaining in the game and New York leading 3-0, a scrum ensued in front of Shesterkin’s net, centered around Ottawa captain Brady Tkachuk. Shesterkin appeared injured as he knelt in his crease while the scrum gravitated toward the boards. About halfway through the fracas, however, Shesterkin leaped to his skates and charged after Tkachuk before the former Vezina Trophy winner was greeted by a left hand from the fiery Senator.
“I just got a couple punches from Tkachuk,” Shesterkin said with a laugh after the win. “To be honest, there was a hit on me [before the whistle], and I didn’t really enjoy it. … So, I just wanted to go over and hold him, and if he wanted to fight, it’s tough for me, because I cannot drop my gloves.”
Rangers forward Matt Rempe, who is known for fighting and has no problem dropping his gloves, was a part of the mix behind the net, as well.
“I was a little nervous because I don’t want anything to happen to him,” Rempe said of seeing his goaltender involved in the scrap. “But I love it because he’s a competitor, and I just wanted to make sure I get in there and nothing happens to him.”
Rangers coach Peter Laviolette enjoyed the moment, as well, telling reporters after the win, “That’s hockey, man.”
Alexis Lafreniere had a goal and an assist in the New York win, and Arthur Kaliyev, Rempe, Artemi Panarin and Will Cuylle also scored. The Rangers are now 7-1-3 since Jan. 2 and have won three straight at home. The shutout was Shesterkin’s third this season and the 18th of his career.
Lafreniere beat Ottawa netminder Leevi Merilainen for his 13th goal at 18:48 of the first. Kaliyev made it 2-0 at 1:50 of the middle period with his second goal as a Ranger since being claimed off waivers from Los Angeles on Jan. 6.
Kaliyev appeared to score again at 4:59 but the goal was waved off for offside. Rangers forward Sam Carrick had a goal negated for the same reason just before Lafreniere’s goal.
Anton Forsberg replaced Merilainen in net for Ottawa after the challenge on Kaliyev’s play. Merilainen made 14 saves before his departure. Forsberg finished with 10 saves.
Rempe scored his first this season at 3:34 of the third, depositing a backhand past Forsberg. Panarin made it 4-0 with his 20th goal on the power play at 9:01 before Cuylle completed the scoring at 9:57.
The Senators entered the contest on a 5-0-1 stretch in their past six games.
“We’ve been playing some good hockey,” Ottawa coach Travis Green said. “But we weren’t good enough to win [tonight]. We fought the puck all night; we weren’t good enough with the puck.”

The Rangers’ third unsuccessful run at acquiring J.T. Miller is behind them, the failed weekend talks having gone quiet for at least the moment after discussions proximate to the 2022 trade deadline and conversations this last November did not reach fruition.
The attempt to acquire Miller may become more complicated if the 31-year-old winger is willing to waive his no-move clause to other destinations. If it is truly New York or Nowhere, the Rangers and GM Chris Drury have a fair amount of control over the process.
But if Miller at this point is willing to go to Carolina, New Jersey or other East Coast locations, the equation becomes more complex.
The motivation to reacquire the team’s 15th selection in the 2011 entry draft was not to have him in place for a drive to secure a wild-card spot. The motivation was to have Miller in place as a top-six linchpin for a run at the Stanley Cup whether that comes sooner or a little bit later.

Chaz Lanier, Igor Milciic Jr. and Tennessee thoughts before SEC play
Tennessee basketball is 13-0, but 0-0 in coach Rick Barnes eyes because one season is over and another is beckoning.
The Vols wrapped up an undefeated nonconference run with a 67-52 win against Norfolk State on Tuesday at Food City Center then Barnes looked ahead to the much-anticipated start of SEC play.
“You can throw it all out,” Barnes said. “We’re 0-0 like everybody else. Rankings mean nothing.”
Here are six thoughts about Tennessee’s nonconference season:
Tennessee has figured out what works for the program in the portal
Tennessee’s first attempts in the transfer portal were mostly disasters. It hasn’t missed in the past two cycles.
Dalton Knecht is the jewel of the portal era for Tennessee and arguably nationally. UT also hit with Jordan Gainey in that portal cycle. He is an elite sixth man. The Vols then got the four-man group of Darlinstone Dubar, Chaz Lanier, Igor Milicic Jr. and Felix Okpara before this season. Lanier is one of the best portal gets in the nation this season.
But the biggest reason the portal is working out so well for Tennessee is the people it got. Tennessee is No. 1 and winning early because it meshed a roster with a backbone of returning leadership with talented newcomers. Such sudden success takes adding the right people to your program.

Zakai Zeigler is earning All-American honors
Zakai Zeigler was a suspect omission from most preseason All-American lists. He won’t be omitted from in the postseason.
The senior guard is averaging 11.7 points and 8.1 assists, while being the spark plug to Tennessee’s offense and its essential leader.
Zeigler is on pace to set the Tennessee record for assists in a season and assists per game. Rodney Woods holds the record for both, averaging 8.7 and totaling 227 in the 1974-75 season.
Igor Milicic Jr. has changed Tennessee in many ways
Milicic Jr. has affected Tennessee impressively as a 6-10 forward.
He is rebounding at an elite level and is a key reason Tennessee is one of the best rebounding teams in the nation. He moves incredibly well for his size and is a playmaker and a floor-spacer. His size and shooting threat affect how opposing defenses handle UT.
His 3-point shot will come around and elevate the Vols even more.
Stop comparing Chaz Lanier to Dalton Knecht
The reason for the comparison between Lanier and Knecht is obvious. Both are high-scoring transfer guards, but they are not the same player.
Lanier uses his quick release to do more of his damage on jumpers and 3-pointers than Knecht, who was more of a three-level scorer. Lanier is taking 52.2% of his shots from three. Knecht took 40.6% of his shots as 3-pointers and had more than twice as many free-throw attempts per game.
Knecht also created more shots off the dribble, where Lanier relies more on being a catch-and-shoot threat.
Both are outstanding scoring talents and integral parts of Tennessee’s recent success. They are just doing it differently and don’t need to be compared.
Depth still feels like a potential pitfall for the Vols
Tennessee is mostly relying on seven players and piling heavy minutes on those players. That’s a tight rotation to sustain through conference play and into the postseason.
The Vols lean on Gainey and Cade Phillips as the two bench players with a sprinkling of Dubar and even less Bishop Boswell. The latter two could gain minutes, but it’s possible the rotation remains limited to seven.
Zeigler’s 33.3 minutes per game are the biggest cause for concern.
Cade Phillips’ development solidified the roster
Phillips’ freshman year was an injury, a likely redshirt, early season contributions, and a small late-season role.

He came back as an improved player and has settled the roster. He’s a lob threat, an athletic defender, and a hustle-play aficionado. His improvement also has been massive with J.P. Estrella out for the season after having foot surgery and Dubar being in and out of the picture early.

Jonathan Quick ready to ‘go to work’ for Rangers with Igor Shesterkin on IR
Nothing changes for Jonathan Quick in the wake of Igor Shesterkin going on IR with an upper-body injury sustained in the third period in Florida on Monday, when Sam Bennett crashed into the Rangers franchise goaltender after a hit from Ryan Lindgren.
“It doesn’t change the game plan, right? No matter who is in the lineup, who is out of the lineup, we do everything we can to prepare for the game [Thursday] night,” said Quick, who will be in net against the Bruins when the club attempts to stop its latest losing streak at four at the Garden. “Go to work.”
The Blueshirts did not provide an update on Shesterkin, who will miss a minimum of seven days in which the club has Boston and a back-to-back this weekend in Washington and Chicago before the Stars come to New York on Jan. 7. At this point, Shesterkin would be eligible to return for the Jan. 9 Garden match against the Devils, but there is surely no guarantee of that.
Jonathan Quick will be the de facto No. 1 Rangers goalie with Igor Shesterkin on IR. JASON SZENES FOR THE NEW YORK POST Quick has not started back-to-back games since April 12-13, 2022, when he was playing for the Kings. Louis Domingue, recalled from the Wolf Pack, will surely get one of the weekend games.
Domingue, who was 4-9-1 with a 3.64 GAA and .888 save percentage with AHL Hartford, has a 1-0 record with the Rangers, having beaten Minnesota 4-1 with 25 saves on Nov. 9, 2023 when both Shesterkin and Quick were unavailable. The Blueshirts promoted the 32-year-old on Tuesday in lieu of 22-year-old Dylan Garand, who is 9-4-2 with a 2.25 GAA and .926 save percentage with the Wolf Pack.
But back to our story.
“It’s a season where, no matter what the situation is, you go one game at a time,” Quick said. “That’s the focus for the whole group, one game at a time and preparing for a really good team in Boston.”
Quick’s numbers have taken a beating during the team’s 4-15 free fall to the NHL’s nether regions. After starting the season 4-0 with two consecutive shutouts, a 0.90 GAA and .970 save percentage, No. 32 is 1-4 since Nov. 23 with a 4.00 GAA and .855 save percentage.
“You never want to overcomplicate anything,” said the three-time Cup winner who will celebrate his 39th birthday on Jan. 21. “So no matter how the season is going, the last five games, the last 10 games, whatever the situation is, it’s an 82-game season.

I’ve always felt that is the best approach, to stay in the moment, one game at a time. Personally, and as a group, it’s, ‘what can I do today to get better and what can we do as a group to get better?’” he said. “We do have to get better today as a group.”
The Rangers did hold a hard-work, spirited practice while going with the same combinations up front and on defense as in Monday’s 4-3 defeat to the Panthers that represented the club’s seventh regulation loss in the last eight games.
The Blueshirts, who dropped five in a row from Nov. 21-29, have not endured two losing streaks of at least five straight in regulation in the same season since 1988-89.

“We’re not sitting here saying it’s OK,” said Laviolette. “Nothing’s OK right now.
“The starts have got to be on point. The discipline has got to be on point, the specialty teams have to be on point, five-on-five. These are things we’ve talked about all the time, where we need to be better and we’re working toward that.
“We need to put the throttle down and need to realize that these points have to start coming our way now.”

Rangers to place Igor Shesterkin on IR with upper-body injury: Source
The New York Rangers are placing Igor Shesterkin on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, a league source said Tuesday, adding more misery to the team’s nosedive to the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings over the last five weeks.
Shesterkin, who signed an eight-year extension worth $ 11.5 million per season on Dec. 8, finished the 5-3 loss to the Panthers in Florida on Monday after being barreled over by Panthers forward Sam Bennett in the third period. Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren knocked Bennett into Shesterkin, who was slow to get up but stayed in the game.
Shesterkin’s numbers aren’t good this season, with a .906 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against average. But he still ranks third in the league with 14.11 goals saved above expected, according to Clear Sight Analytics, and the Rangers, who have lost 15 of their last 19 games, will be in even more trouble without their franchise goalie.
The team recalled veteran Louis Domingue on Tuesday to team with Jonathan Quick. The Rangers host the Bruins on Thursday.

New York Rangers star goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been placed on injured reserve with an upper body injury, an NHL source told ESPN on Tuesday.
The Rangers recalled NHL veteran Louis Domingue from the AHL Hartford Wolf Pack. Shesterkin’s backup, Jonathan Quick, is 5-4-0 in 12 games this season with a .907 save percentage and a 2.69 goals-against average.
Shesterkin stopped 21 of 25 shots in the Rangers’ 5-3 loss to the Florida Panthers on Monday night. During that game, Panthers forward Sam Bennett was checked into Shesterkin’s upper body by Rangers defenseman Ryan Lindgren. Shesterkin was down on the ice briefly but didn’t leave the game.
Shesterkin, 29, is 11-15-1 in 27 games this season with a .906 save percentage and a 3.10 goals-against average. While the Rangers are 20th in goals against per game this season, Shesterkin is second among all goalies with 13 goals saved above replacement, according to Stathletes.
It has been an eventful month for Shesterkin. He signed a contract extension with the Rangers on Dec. 6 that makes him the highest-paid goalie in NHL history: an eight-year, $92 million contract that starts in the 2025-26 season. The 2022 Vezina Trophy winner is in in the final year of a four-year deal with an average annual value of $5.66 million.
The injury to Shesterkin is the latest bit of adversity for the Rangers this season. They are 16-19-1 after 36 games, having lost four games in a row and going 2-8-0 in their past 10 games. The Rangers were seven points out of a playoff spot entering Tuesday night.
