  • Ohio State Buckeyes vs Illinois Fighting Illini Prediction, Odds and Picks

Ohio State has one thing on their mind heading into Sunday’s matchup against Illinois and that’s walking out with a victory against a ranked opponent.  Ohio State has won 3 in a row, which includes an upset over then No. 11 Purdue, and they’re hoping to stay dialed in against a very good Illinois team. Illinois has lost 2 out of their last 3 games, and they hope to get a winning streak going before their season slips away from them. Ohio State has turned around their season with strong defense, so will they be able to keep things moving in their favor?  Let’s find out as we dive into our Ohio State vs Illinois prediction.

Ohio State guard, Bruce Thornton, has been playing exceptionally well this season.   The Junior averages 17 points and 3.2 rebounds per game, which leads this Buckeyes team.  As for Illinois, they are loaded with talent, having five players who average double digits per game, which could give this Buckeyes team a run for their money.  The Buckeyes average 79.9 points per game while giving up 71, and the Fighting Illini are averaging 85.8 points per game while giving up 69.5 points per game on average. Both offenses have been playing exceptionally well, and Illinois has one of the best offenses in all of the NCAA, but I think Ohio State has been playing slightly better as of late, and with players like Thornton and Mobley Jr., I think Ohio State could stick around in this game to the very end.  This spread is a little bit too big in my opinion against a solid Ohio State squad, which is why I’ll be backing them as my best bet of the day.

Ohio State vs Illinois prediction: Ohio State +6.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable at that number.

The Ohio State Buckeyes will face off against the Illinois Fighting Illini in a highly anticipated college football matchup this weekend. Both teams are coming off strong performances and will be looking to secure a crucial win in their conference.

The Buckeyes are currently ranked 6th in the nation and are favored to win this game. Led by star quarterback Justin Fields, Ohio State’s offense has been explosive, averaging over 40 points per game. Their defense has also been solid, holding opponents to just 21 points per game.

On the other hand, the Fighting Illini have had a mixed season so far, with a record of 2-3. However, they are coming off a big upset win against Nebraska and will look to carry that momentum into this game. Illinois’ offense is led by quarterback Brandon Peters, who has shown flashes of brilliance throughout the season.

In terms of odds, Ohio State is currently listed as a heavy favorite, with a spread of -21.5 points. The over/under for total points scored is set at 63.5.

    Prediction:
Despite Illinois’ recent success, Ohio State’s high-powered offense and strong defense should be too much for the Fighting Illini to handle. I predict that the Buckeyes will come out on top in this game, covering the spread and securing a comfortable victory.

    Pick: Ohio State Buckeyes -21.5

    Odds: Ohio State -21.5, Over/Under 63.5

Welcome to “Good Morning, Illini Nation,” your daily dose of college basketball news from Illini beat writer and AP Top 25 voter Scott Richey. He’ll offer up insights every morning on Brad Underwood’s team and college basketball at large:

The first question to Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg on Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb., was about Illinois. Specifically the challenges the Illini might present in Thursday’s game at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

“A lot jumps out on problems they can cause,” Hoiberg told reporters. “First of all, they play with a lot of pace. We’ve got to do a good job of getting back in transition. They really share it. They do a good job of creating threes.

“(Kasparas) Jakucionis is incredibly impressive at the point guard position for his age. He’s a wizard in ball screens. We’re going to have to do a good job not only trying to contest shots, but contest passes and buy rotations time and close out with urgency.”

Jakucionis’ playmaking and the Illini’s shot making potential were just two aspects of Thursday’s matchup that give Hoiberg pause. Rebounding is another.

“The other thing with Illinois is they are relentless on the glass,” the Cornhuskers coach said. “They had 21 offensive rebounds in their last game against Northwestern. They had 15 at Michigan State, which is damn near impossible to do with that team and their physicality.

“They lead the nation in rebound margin, and they crash everybody. They don’t send anybody back. They all five crash, and if we don’t make contact and play physical it’s going to be a long day.”

Check out Hoiberg’s full press conference here:

    Good Morning, Illini Nation!

Former NBA player and current head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Fred Hoiberg, recently shared his thoughts on the University of Illinois basketball program. Hoiberg, who played college basketball at Iowa State and later coached the Chicago Bulls, had high praise for the Illini team and their head coach, Brad Underwood.

In a recent interview, Hoiberg commended Underwood for his leadership and the way he has built a strong and competitive team in Champaign. He highlighted the talent and depth of the Illini roster, particularly singling out standout players like Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn.

Hoiberg also mentioned the exciting rivalry between Nebraska and Illinois, noting the intensity and competitiveness of their matchups. He expressed his respect for the Illini program and their passionate fan base, acknowledging the team’s potential to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

As a former player and coach with experience at both the college and professional levels, Hoiberg’s insights into the Illinois basketball program carry weight. It’s always great to hear positive feedback from respected figures in the basketball world, and it’s clear that the Illini are making a strong impression on Hoiberg and others around the country.

So, Illini Nation, let’s continue to support our team and show the rest of the college basketball world what we’re made of. With the guidance of Coach Underwood and the talent on our roster, the future looks bright for Illinois basketball. Go Illini!

  • Fighting Illini Earn First Big Ten Road Win With Dominant Victory Over Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Illinois led for the final 38 minutes of play en route to an emphatic 68-54 road win over Indiana at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Thursday night.

Ahead by as many as 15 in the contest, the Fighting Illini improved to 13-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play with their first Big Ten road victory of the campaign.

Four scorers for the Orange and Blue finished in double figures as the Illini recorded their largest margin of victory against the Hoosiers away from home since 1999.

Kendall Bostic marked her return to her home state with a dominant 21-point, eight-rebound performance. A pest in the paint from start to finish, Bostic went 9-for-19 from the field, dished out three assists, and made one block while playing all 40 minutes.

After totaling 11 points in the first quarter, Adalia McKenzie tallied 15 points for her eighth-straight outing in double figures. Three of her five rebounds came on the offensive glass, and she amassed four assists.

Berry Wallace scored in double figures for the second time in her career and for the first time in Big Ten play, pouring in 13 points off the bench. A stretch of five-consecutive points in the fourth quarter swung the momentum back in the Illini’s favor, and the freshman also connected on three 3-pointers, going 3-for-3 from deep, and finished with four rebounds and a steal.

Genesis Bryant ended the night with 12 points while equaling her season-best total with seven assists. She also corralled three rebounds and snatched a steal.

Jasmine Brown-Hagger logged seven points, including five in the fourth quarter, along with four assists, two rebounds, and a steal.

The Hoosiers scored on their first possession of the night, but the Illini did not trail for long. A 19-2 run over the next five-and-a-half minutes gave the visitors a double-digit lead, 19-5. Bostic and McKenzie each logged seven points during that stretch, which saw the Orange and Blue make eight of their first 11 shots from the field.

McKenzie became the game’s first scorer to move into double figures with just over two minutes left in the opening frame. The Illini maintained their double-digit edge, storming into the second quarter with a 25-14 lead.

After Illinois extended its advantage up to 15 by scoring the first four points of the second period, Bostic joined McKenzie in double figures with just over four minutes left in the frame. Bostic ultimately scored the Illini’s final four points of the first half, helping the away side go into the break with a 35-22 advantage.

Bostic and McKenzie led the way offensively for the Orange and Blue, combining for 26 of the Illini’s 35 first-half points. Registering an assist on 11 of 16 made field goals across the first 20 minutes of action, Illinois shot 60% from 3-point range ahead of halftime.

Picking up where she left off, Bostic scored six of the Illini’s first eight points of the second half to allow the Orange and Blue to maintain their double-digit lead. A stretch of seven-straight makes from the Hoosiers reduced the hosts’ deficit down to single digits, 45-37, for the first time in over 20 minutes of game time.

After the Illini took a timeout, Wallace drilled her second 3-pointer less than 15 seconds later to push the visitors’ edge back up to 11 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter. A 4-1 Indiana run to close the frame sent the sides into the fourth quarter with Illinois in front, 49-41.

The Hoosiers cut their deficit to four early in the final frame, but a stretch of five-straight points from Wallace carried the Illini’s lead back into double figures. After making a steal and a transition layup, Wallace followed it up by knocking down a 3-pointer less than 20 seconds later. That momentum swing extended the Orange and Blue’s edge to 55-45 with 6:08 left to play.

A buzzer-beating Indiana 3-pointer cut the home side’s deficit back to seven, but Brown-Hagger accounted for the game’s next five points, including a corner three, to re-establish Illinois’ double-digit advantage, 62-50, with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the contest.

Bryant and McKenzie’s back-to-back buckets brought the Orange and Blue back up by 12 with under one minute to go, sealing the team’s first conference road win of the year.

Illinois plays host to a ranked opponent for the third time this season on Sunday, when No. 22 Michigan State makes the trip to Champaign. The opening tipoff between the Fighting Illini and Spartans at State Farm Center is set for 2 p.m. CT on B1G+, with tickets available at the door or online at FightingIllini.com.

The Fighting Illini basketball team made a statement on Monday night as they earned their first Big Ten road win of the season with a dominant 91-65 victory over Indiana.

Led by Ayo Dosunmu’s 30 points, the Illini came out firing on all cylinders from the opening tip. They shot an impressive 57% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc, outscoring the Hoosiers in every quarter.

Defensively, Illinois put on a clinic, holding Indiana to just 38% shooting and forcing 15 turnovers. Kofi Cockburn made his presence felt in the paint with 15 rebounds and 5 blocks, anchoring a stifling defense that frustrated the Hoosiers all night.

This win was a significant milestone for the Fighting Illini, who have struggled on the road in conference play this season. It also marked their fifth consecutive victory, solidifying their position as a top contender in the Big Ten.

With performances like this, Illinois is proving that they are a force to be reckoned with as they continue their quest for a conference title and beyond. Go Illini! #IlliniBasketball #BigTenWin #DominantVictory

Though Illinois won last year’s game in Champaign, the Hoosiers have won the last nine contests against the Illini in Bloomington. Indiana is 28-10 when hosting Illinois, with the Illini looking for their first road win against the Hoosiers since Feb. 12, 2012.

Since head coach Shauna Green took over at Illinois, both games played between the Illini and the Hoosiers at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall have been decided by six points or fewer.

    LAST TIME OUT

Illinois earned its second ranked win of the season with a 62-57 victory over No. 23 Iowa at State Farm Center on Jan. 9.

Four Fighting Illini scorers finished in double figures as the Orange and Blue took down the ranked Hawkeyes and improved to 10-1 at home during the 2024-25 campaign.

Kendall Bostic secured her 10th double-double of the season, registering 17 points and 14 rebounds in the win. Going 8-for-12 from the field, Bostic also dished out three assists, made two steals, and bagged two blocks.

Jasmine Brown-Hagger tallied 10 points, three assists, and a steal, while Berry Wallace collected seven points off the bench.

ILLINI CONTINUE TO BATTLE DESPITE INJURY BUG

Through the team’s first 16 games of the season, Illinois has yet to have its full 14-player roster available. Holding an 12-4 record despite those setbacks, the Illini have remained resilient while battling injury issues throughout the first half of the campaign.

Seven different players have missed at least one game due to injury this season, including sophomore transfer center Lety Vasconcelos, who was expected to be a key piece in the rotation before suffering a season-ending ACL tear over the summer. On Jan. 8, the program announced that fifth-year Makira Cook (ongoing health condition) and sophomore Gretchen Dolan (knee) would both miss the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

Five-star freshman guard Berry Wallace (hand) missed seven of the first eight games, while junior forward Shay Bollin, who played in 29 games for the Illini last season, has yet to make an appearance during the 2024-25 campaign. Freshman Irene Noya Catoira sat out the first seven games of the year while recovering from injury, while guard Jasmine Brown-Hagger, who has since moved into the starting lineup, missed three games while working her way back from a concussion.

GREEN CONTINUES TO CLIMB PROGRAM’S ALL-TIME WIN LIST

BOSTIC EARNS FIRST-CAREER B1G PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARD (NOV. 25)

The fifth-year senior led the Illini to a 2-0 week after averaging 28 points, 10 rebounds, and one steal while posting zero turnovers as the Fighting Illini climbed to 5-0 after downing their third 2024 NCAA Tournament team of the season.

The Kokomo, Ind., native shot 83.9% from the floor on 26-of-31 attempts and connected on all four of her free-throw attempts. HOME ATTENDANCE NUMBERS

Across 15 home games during the 2022-23 season, Illinois Women’s Basketball saw 52,295 fans fill the State Farm Center en route to a 12-3 record. In Illinois’ 2023-24 season – and home – opener, the attendance of 2,680 marked the largest ticketed season-opening crowd at State Farm Center since 2000 (3,954). CONTRACT EXTENSION

Illinois Director of Athletics Josh Whitman announced a two-year contract extension for women’s basketball head coach Shauna Green, which was approved by the University of Illinois Board of Trustees at its Nov. 14 meeting. Initially, the new agreement will keep Green on a six-year contract through at least the 2029-30 season. The agreement also provides Green the opportunity to earn up to four additional one-year extensions if certain performance thresholds are met.

Under Green, Illinois owns a 53-29 record, including a 21-20 mark in Big Ten play. In the first two years under Green, the Illinois women’s basketball team registered 41 wins, the first-ever postseason championship in program history (2024 WBIT), and back-to-back top-five season attendances in State Farm Center. Over the last three seasons, Illinois has delivered three upsets of AP Top-20 ranked teams: No. 12 Iowa (1/1/23), No. 14 Indiana (2/19/24), and No. 19 Florida State (11/7/24).

  • The Illinois Fighting Illini are gearing up for a tough test as they head to Eugene to take on the #9 ranked Oregon Ducks on Thursday night. This matchup will be a true test of the Illini’s mettle as they face a top-10 opponent on the road.

Illinois is coming off a solid win over Kansas City, but they will need to bring their A-game against a talented Oregon team. This game will also be a test of Illinois’ depth and versatility. The Illini have multiple scoring threats, including Kofi Cockburn and Trent Frazier, who will need to step up and provide support for their team. The Illini will need to play solid defense and execute on offense if they want to pull off the upset on the road.

  • How Luke Altmyer became confident, comfortable in his own skin with Illini

How Luke Altmyer became confident, comfortable in his own skin with Illini

ORLANDO, Fla. — There are moments when Chad and Betsy Altmyer remember a second-grade boy who was too shy to stand up in front of his class to recite the Pledge of Allegiance, deciding instead to take a zero on the exercise.

In so many ways, their son, Luke Altmyer, still is a a relatively quiet but confident young man. In other ways, Luke Altmyer couldn’t be more different.

Chad and Betsy couldn’t believe their son grabbed a microphone in the first half of a men’s basketball game with a spotlight shining down on him in front of more than 15,000 fans to triumphantly announce his return to the Illini as the team’s starting quarterback for one more year. They were a bit surprised to see their son in a Cheez-It commercial leading into Tuesday’s Cheez-It Citrus Bowl game against South Carolina.

“I think we see a lot of the things just like y’all see and sometimes we look at each other and go, ‘Man, I can’t believe that’s Luke,’ with some of the things that’s happened,” Chad Altmyer told Illini Inquirer. “We’ve had some great breaks this year and I guess you make your own breaks on the football field, but it’s like, ‘Dang, is that Luke doing that?’ Like at Rutgers or Purdue or those type games. He’s always been talented. He’s always been good. He’s just super talented.

Luke Altmyer, the quarterback for the University of Illinois football team, has recently opened up about his journey to becoming confident and comfortable in his own skin with the Illini.

Altmyer, a highly touted recruit out of high school, initially struggled to find his footing on the team. He faced challenges both on and off the field, leading to doubts about his abilities and place within the program.

However, through hard work, dedication, and the support of his coaches and teammates, Altmyer was able to overcome his insecurities and thrive as a player. He embraced his unique strengths and weaknesses, learning to trust in his skills and instincts.

As a result, Altmyer has become a leader on the team, inspiring his fellow players with his resilience and determination. He has found his voice both on and off the field, becoming a confident and respected member of the Illini community.

Altmyer’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that self-acceptance and confidence are key components of success. By embracing who he is and what he brings to the table, Altmyer has not only improved as a player but also as a person.

So here’s to Luke Altmyer, a shining example of how confidence and self-assurance can lead to greatness on and off the field. The Illini are lucky to have him, and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes next.
