In a recent update, NBC Chicago has reported that dozens of school closings have been announced in Illinois ahead of an incoming snowstorm. With the forecast predicting heavy snowfall and potentially dangerous road conditions, many school districts have decided to err on the side of caution and close their doors for the day.

Parents and students are advised to stay tuned to local news stations and school district websites for the latest updates on closures and delays. It is important to prioritize safety during inclement weather, and to plan ahead for any potential disruptions to daily routines.

Stay safe and warm, Illinois! And remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to winter weather.

  • No. 23 Illinois opens the first of back-to-back road games on Wednesday night at Rutgers (7:30 p.m. CT, BTN).

  • The Rutgers matchup is the third of five games in 13 days across four locations for the Illini from Jan. 30-Feb. 11.

  • The Fighting Illini are coming off a come-from-behind win over Ohio State on Sunday in which the Illini erased an 11-point second-half deficit to secure their 10th victory of the season at State Farm Center.

  • The freshman duo of Will Riley and Morez Johnson Jr. keyed the Illini win over the Buckeyes. Riley came off the bench to score 24 points, with 20 coming in the second half. His 24 points were the most by a freshman reserve in a Big Ten game this season. Johnson posted his third double-double of the year with 14 points and a team-season-high 15 rebounds (seven offensive).

  • Will Riley has earned his second Big Ten Freshman of the Week award. He scored 16 points with a game-high four 3-pointers at Nebraska on Thursday before his 24-point outburst vs. Ohio State on Sunday. For the week, Riley averaged 20 points and 3.5 rebounds, shooting 52% from the field, including 45.5% from 3-point range.

  • Illinois is the nation’s top rebounding team, leading the NCAA in rebounds per game (45.5 rpg), defensive rebounds per game (31.8 rpg), and rebound margin (+11.7 rpg).

  • Illinois is No. 12 in the latest NCAA NET rankings, second in the Big Ten. The Illini are tied for fifth nationally with six Quad 1 wins.

  • Head coach Brad Underwood is 9-3 against Rutgers and has led Illinois to wins in five of the last six meetings, including an 86-63 victory in Piscataway last season as part of a season sweep.

  • Overall, Illinois owns a 13-4 lead in the all-time series with Rutgers. The Illini are 12-4 vs. the Scarlet Knights since Rutgers joined the Big Ten in 2014-15.

  • In Illinois’ 87-79 win vs. Ohio State, the team improved to 14-1 on the season when scoring at least 80 points. The Illini’s 15 games with 80+ points are tied with Iowa for most in the Big Ten, and tied for sixth nationally with the Hawkeyes and No. 1-ranked Auburn. Among teams with at least 15 80-point games, Illinois’ .933 win percentage ranks third in the nation behind Auburn at 15-0 (1.000) and Alabama at 18-1 (.947).

  • Illinois is a combined 5-4 away from State Farm Center this season, with a 3-3 mark in true road contests. The Illini had won three straight conference road games prior to an 80-78 heartbreaker at No. 12 Michigan State on Jan. 19, and an 80-74 overtime loss at Nebraska on Jan. 30.

  • Illinois is 32-24 (.571) in Big Ten road games since the start of the 2019-20 season, the best mark in the league over the last six seasons.

  • At 3-3 in conference road games so far this season, the Illini are on pace to finish .500 or better on the road in league play for the fifth time in the last six seasons.

  • The Illini secured their 10th home win of the season vs. Ohio State (Feb. 2), their sixth straight season with at least 10 home wins at State Farm Center under Brad Underwood. Since 2019-20, the Illini boast the third-best home record in the Big Ten at 79-16 (.832). Nationally, that ranks 13th among teams that have played each of the last six seasons in a power conference.

  • On Monday, Kasparas Jakucionis was named to Oscar Robertson Trophy Midseason Watch List. It is the latest midseason honor for Jakucionis, who has also been a unanimous selection to the five-player Freshman All-America Team by The Athletic, a Midseason All-America third team selection by The Sporting News, and a John R. Wooden Award Midseason Watch List selection.

  • Illinois is No. 13 in the latest KenPom net rating at 24.97. The Fighting Illini are on pace for their fourth top-20 rating in the last five seasons under Brad Underwood

  • Four of Illinois’ last seven wins have come by 25+ points. The Illini defeated Chicago State, 117-64 (+53), recorded an historic 109-77 (+32) victory at No. 9 Oregon, earned a 91-52 (+39) home win over Penn State, and rolled to a 94-69 (+25) victory at Indiana. The Illini have led by 25+ points in nine games this season.

  • Illinois is averaging 85.3 points, the team’s highest output since the 1988-89 Flyin’ Illini averaged 86.4 ppg. Illinois is on pace for the No. 6 scoring offense mark in program history.

  • Illinois ranks second in the Big Ten with a scoring margin of +14.9 points. That is on pace for No. 3 in the Illini record book behind the 1942-43 team, which outscored opponents by 20.6 points per game, and the 2004-05 Illini that posted a scoring margin of +15.9 ppg., the team’s best mark since 1960.

  • Illinois leads the nation in rebounding at 45.5 boards per game, on pace for the program’s best average in 53 seasons, since ( 48.0 rpg in 1971-72). The Orange and Blue have outrebounded their opponent in 19 of 22 games this season.

  • The Illini rank No. 12 in KenPom adjusted defensive efficiency (93.6), on pace for its highest ranking since reaching seventh during the 2021 season, and the second-best number of the Underwood era (88.9 in 2021).

  • Illinois is sixth nationally in KenPom’s effective field goal percentage defense (.440), ranking ninth in 2-point defense (.439) and 15th in 3-point defense (.294). Illinois, Tennessee, and Florida are the only three programs to rank in the top 15 of both categories.

  • According to KenPom, the Illini rank third nationally, and first among Power Conference programs, with a 3-point attempt rate (3-point attempts/total field goal attempts) of 30.1%. Among major conference teams, Illinois ranks first nationally with five games of 15+ made 3-pointers.

  • Illinois is 3-3 against Top-25 ranked teams this season with wins over No. 19 Arkansas, No. 20 Wisconsin, and at No. 9 Oregon. The Illini’s three ranked wins are tied for 10th most in the nation.

  • Brad Underwood has led the Illini program to Top-25 rankings in seven consecutive seasons, currently at No. 23 in the latest AP poll and 25th in the coaches poll. Illinois has been ranked for a total of nine weeks this season, including an active streak of seven-consecutive weeks, and has reached as high as 13th.

  • Illinois has registered 76 wins in league play since the start of the 2019-20 season, one behind Purdue for the most in the conference over the last six seasons. And when including the conference tournament, the Illini have 81 wins during this time span, also one behind Purdue’s mark.

  • The Illini won the 2024 Big Ten Tournament championship as the #2 seed, captured the regular season championship in 2022, and led the conference in wins while adding a B1G Tournament crown in 2021, and the team’s three total championships during that span are tied with Purdue for the most in the Big Ten.

  • Following the 2024 Elite Eight appearance and Big Ten Tournament Championship, Illinois has a dramatically different roster this season. The program returns just one rotation player – last year’s ninth-leading scorer Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn – and returns just 2.9% of its minutes, 2.2% of its points, and 2.0% of its rebounds overall.

  • Eight different Illini players have recorded a 20-point game this season, tied for the top mark in the NCAA, and the most by any Big Ten program since at least 2004-05.

  • Newcomers to the Illini roster have accounted for 91.3% of the team’s scoring so far (1,696 of 1,857 total points), with UI freshmen accounting for 41.4% of those points (702).

  • Four of the Illinois’ top scorers and rebounders are all in their first year of collegiate basketball. Freshman G Kasparas Jakucionis ranks first in scoring (15.6 ppg) and third in rebounding (5.7 rpg). Sophomore C Tomislav Ivisic nearly averages a double-double at 12.9 points (second on team) and team-leading 8.6 rebounds. Freshman F Will Riley is the Illini’s No. 4 scorer at 11.0 points per game. And Freshman F Morez Johnson Jr. ranks second on the team at 6.9 rebounds per game with a team-leading 59 offensive boards (2.7 per game).

  • At 15.6 points per game, point guard Kasparas Jakucionis is just shy of the Illinois freshman record for scoring average (15.9 ppg) set by Kiwane Garris 31 years ago.

  • Jakucionis has posted four game this season with 20+ points, 6+ rebounds and 5+ assists, tied for third  nationally with Auburn fifth-year senior Johni Broome and Purdue junior Braden Smith.

  • Jakucionis scored 20+ points in six straight games from Nov. 25-Dec. 22, shattering the Illini freshman record for consecutive 20-point games (previous record was two).

  • Jakucionis became the fourth Big Ten freshman since 1996-97 with at least six-straight 20-point games, and the first to do so since Indiana’s Eric Gordon had seven in a row in 2007.

  • Jakucionis has eight 20-point games this season, tying the Illini all-time record for 20-point games by a freshman with Cory Bradford who set the current mark as a redshirt freshman in 1998-99.

  • Over his last 15 games, Jakucionis is averaging 17.3 points (259), 5.6 rebounds (84), and 5.3 assists (80), knocking down an average of 2.1 threes per game (32) on 36.8% from 3-point range (32-87) along with 83.8% from the foul line (67-80).

  • Tomislav Ivisic is the No. 6 rebounder in the Big Ten at 8.6 rpg. Ivisic has led the Illini rebounding effort, which ranks No. 1 nationally in total rebounds per game, in 11 of the 19 games in which he has played.

  • Ivisic, classified as sophomore in his first season of collegiate competition, has recorded eight double-doubles through 19 games, ranking fourth in the Big Ten, tied for 28th in the NCAA overall, and tied for first among power conference underclassmen.

  • Ben Humrichous has knocked down at least one 3-pointer in 20 of 22 games this season. He leads the team and ranks 15th in the Big Ten averaging 1.95 triples per contest.

  • After opening the year averaging 7.1 points and 5.0 rebounds in eight games, Tre White found a rhythm on the court for the Illini. Beginning with a 23-point, 8 rebound effort vs. #20 Wisconsin on Dec. 10, White averaged 12.1 points (157) and 6.2 rebounds (80) the team’s next 13 games, scoring in double figures seven times.

  • Likewise Kylan Boswell is averaging 13.9 points (195), 6.1 rebounds (85), and 3.6 assists (51) in his last 14 games, reaching double-figures scoring 12 times including a career-high 22 points in the Illini’s win at Indiana (Jan. 14).

  • Boswell recorded the seventh triple-double in Illinois history and fifth of the Underwood era against Chicago State (Dec. 29), tallying 18 points, career-high 10 rebounds, and career-high 10 assists.

  • Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn continues to make a big impact for the Illini in his sophomore season. Over his last 12 games, Gibbs-Lawhorn is averaging 10.3 points (124) while shooting 53.6% (45-84) from the field.

  • Gibbs-Lawhorn made the first start of his collegiate career vs. Ohio State (Feb. 2), and was key to the Illini’s 87-79 come-from-behind victory. He posted 10 points highlighted by a momentum-shifting steal and run-out dunk that capped a 12-2 run to pull the Illini to within one possession after OSU’s lead had reached 11 points.

  • Morez Johnson Jr. is also excelling for the Illini. Over his last 12 games Johnson is averaging 8.5 points (102) and 7.6 rebounds (76), highlighted by a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double in the win over Penn State (Jan. 8), a 15-point, nine-rebound effort in his second-career start vs. Northwestern on Jan. 26, and a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double in the team’s come-from-behind win over Ohio State on Feb. 2.

  • Johnson, at 6.9 rebounds per game, is on track to tie Efrem Winters (1982-83) for the second-best freshman mark in Illini history, behind only Kofi Cockburn’s 2019-20 season average (8.8 rpg).

  • Johnson posted his second double-double of the season in Illinois’ Jan. 8 win over Penn State, recording a career-high 20 points and pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds. On Feb. 2, he posted his third double-double with 14 points and a team-season-high 15 rebounds vs. Ohio State.

  • Through 22 games, Johnson has recorded 27 total blocks, tied for sixth in the Illini freshman record book with James Augustine (2002-03). Johnson is on pace to finish his freshman season third among Illini freshmen all-time behind only Deon Thomas (54 in 1990-91) and Kofi Cockburn (44 in 2019-20).

  • Illinois leads the Big Ten in seven team statistical categories, with the following NCAA rankings: total rebounds per game (1st in NCAA; 45.5), defensive rebounds per game (1st; 31.8), rebound margin (1st; 11.7), 3-point attempts per game (6th; 31.0), free-throw attempts per game (18th; 23.7), field goal percentage defense (19th; .395), and offensive rebounds per game (21st; 13.7).

  • Three Illini scored 20+ points vs. Penn State – Ben Humrichous (21), Morez Johnson Jr. (20) and Tre White (20). It marked just the third time in the last 35 seasons that Illinois had a game featuring a trio of 20-point scorers.

  • Illinois’ 32-point road win over #9 Oregon was the largest margin of victory ever by a road team over an AP Top-10 opponent, and the largest road win in Illinois program history against any top-25 opponent.

  • In their 109-77 win at #9 Oregon, Illinois became the first Big Ten team since Feb. 9, 1989, to record 100+ points in a Top-10 road win (No. 10 Michigan defeated No. 8 Iowa, 108-107).

  • Illinois also posted a dominant 94-69 win at Indiana on Jan. 14. The 25-point margin of victory was the second-largest for a Hoosiers’ opponent in Assembly Hall history, while Illinois’ 94 points marked the most ever scored by a visiting team in a regulation game at Assembly Hall.

  • How much does a Real ID cost in Illinois? – NBC Chicago

Beginning in May, Illinois residents will need a certain type of ID in order to fly domestically.

The U.S. government will require all those who fly within the country to use either a valid U.S. passport or a Real ID to board a plane starting May 7.

With the deadline fast approaching, the number of people looking to book appointments with the Illinois Secretary of State’s office is growing.

Such appointments are filling up “super fast,” Secretary of State officials told NBC Chicago.

For those who have yet to get a Real ID, you may have plenty of questions – including how much one costs. The fee for a Real ID is $30 – the same as a regular driver’s license in Illinois.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias said last year that his office was stepping up efforts to ensure that residents get Real ID-compliant identification prior to the May 2025 deadline, but acknowledged there are “tremendous concerns” about what will happen as the deadline arrives.

“We feel pressure … Our facilities will swell up, and it will be a problem if people don’t get out and get their REAL ID’s,” he said at the time.

According to state data, as of Dec. 31, 2024, the office has issued 3,295,078 Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses and state IDs. This represents just 25.34% of all currently valid driver’s license and state IDs.

How to get a Real ID

The website for the Secretary of State’s office notes that new appointments are made available daily at 6:30 a.m., so booking one early can help.

You can also get a Real ID at the 2025 Chicago Auto Show at the McCormick Place – without an appointment.

Planning to get your Real ID soon? Find a checklist of everything you need to bring here.

Running from Feb. 8-17, the Chicago Auto Show is once again offering residents the ability to receive their Real IDs with proper documentation at the event’s Secretary of State booth.

The Real ID is an enhanced form of identification that will soon be required for domestic air travel and access to federal facilities. In Illinois, the cost of a Real ID is $30. However, this price may vary depending on factors such as age and whether you are getting a new ID or renewing an existing one. Make sure to bring all necessary documentation and payment when applying for your Real ID. Stay informed and prepared for the upcoming changes! #RealID #Illinois #NBCChicago

  • The Huskers knocked off No. 18 Illinois — now, how will it respond?

It was all smiles for Nebraska in the postgame media session following the upset win over Brad Underwood’s No. 18-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini on Thursday.

The victory snapped a six-game losing streak and was needed in the worst way as the team was facing obvious confidence issues.

“I’m proud of our guys. We needed this one in a big way,” head coach Fred Hoiberg said.

But now that the streak was ended and some sort of positivity found its way back inside the locker room, what are the Huskers going to do with this new-found momentum? Up next for the Huskers is their first West Coast swing of the new 18-team Big Ten era.

Today at 6:30 p.m. central time, Nebraska (13-8, 3-7 in Big Ten) will play Dana Altman’s No. 16-ranked Oregon Ducks (16-5, 5-5), who will want to respond in a winning way after losing by 26 points at UCLA, 78-52, on Thursday. It was a game where Oregon couldn’t make anything — the Ducks went 4-of-23 from 3.

Oregon is now 1-3 in its last four games and has dropped two straight. Today’s game will be on BTN with Guy Haberman and Don MacLean on the call.

The Oregon game will be another Quad 1 opportunity for the Huskers, who currently have a 3-6 record against Quad 1 opponents, with wins over Creighton (NET of 39) on the road and UCLA (28) and Illinois (14) at home. On Sunday afternoon Oregon had a NET rating of 34 — another chance to continue climbing out of the deep hole the Huskers put themselves in.

“It’s important for us now, after losing a couple home games, at some point in these last 10 (games left in the regular season), we’re gonna have to steal some road games,” Hoiberg said.

If Nebraska can find a way to come out with a win over Oregon, it would mark a fourth victory over a ranked opponent this season. The last time Nebraska won four games against ranked teams was in 1998-99.

After the tilt with Oregon, Nebraska will not fly home. Instead, it will stay on the West Coast with a Wednesday night game in Seattle against Washington that’s set to tip at 9:30 p.m. central.

The Huskies were riding the struggle bus just like Nebraska was and had their own six-game losing streak before getting the train back on the tracks with a tough 71-68 win on the road at Minnesota on Saturday.

Before the Illinois game, Hoiberg mentioned he asked newly-retired Nebraska volleyball coach John Cook for advice about making travel plans and how Cook handled the West Coast swing with his team.

“They ended up staying overnight and flying back the next morning, which I think is better than getting home at 5 a.m.,” Hoiberg said. “Back in the old NBA days, you did fly back after the game but only had a day and then you had to play. So you almost had to do that, but, man, that was a hard game.”

There are a few Huskers on the roster with game experience against Oregon from the old Pac-12 days, including Washington transfer Braxton Meah, UCLA transfer Berke Buyuktuncel and Utah transfer Rollie Worster.Though, these days with roster turnover being the norm each offseason, it has become less important.

Meah played Oregon twice last season with the Huskies. In the first game, he played 14 minutes and was 0-of-2 from the field with four rebounds in a loss. In the second game, Meah had a larger impact, playing 31 minutes with a double-double of 15 points (7-of-7 from the field) and 12 rebounds with three blocks. Meah, of course, has not played the past two games for Nebraska because of matchups, according to Hoiberg.

Buyuktuncel played Oregon three times last season. The first game: 12 points and three rebounds in 21 minutes. The second game: two points, two rebounds in 14 minutes. The third game: only 1 minute of action.

Worster’s foot injury kept him from playing Oregon last season while he was with the Utes. But two seasons ago, Worster played Oregon once. In that game, a loss, the point guard recorded five points (2-of-9 from the field, 0-of-4 from 3), seven assists and six rebounds.

The Ducks are 8-3 at home in Eugene this season but 2-3 against Big Ten opponents with losses coming to Illinois (109-77), UCLA (73-71) and Purdue (65-58) inside Matthew Knight Arena.

Oregon has eight players averaging at least six points per game, led by the 7-foot, 220-pound Nate Bittle, who’s averaging 12.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game while shooting 28.8% from 3 on 3.1 attempts per game.

Against Big Ten teams, Oregon’s offense is averaging 71.5 points per game (15th in conference) while the Ducks are allowing 76.4 points per contest (11th).

Oregon is shooting 33% from 3 as a team but has four shooters who are above 35% from deep this season, including 6-1 guard Keeshawn Barthelemy (42.9%, 36-of-84), 6-8 forward Brandon Angel (40%, 18-of-45), 6-foot guard Jackson Shelstad (37.4%, 34-of-91) and 6-5 guard Jadrian Tracey (35.6%, 21-of-59).

After a thrilling victory over No. 18 Illinois, the Huskers are riding high and looking to carry that momentum into their next matchup. But the question remains: how will they respond? Will they continue their winning ways and build on their recent success, or will they fall back into old habits and struggle to maintain their momentum?

One thing is for sure – the Huskers have proven that they have the talent and ability to compete with the best teams in the country. With a strong defense and a dynamic offense, they have the potential to make a deep run in the conference and national tournaments.

But the key to their success will be consistency. Can they continue to play at a high level game after game, or will they let their guard down and allow their opponents to gain the upper hand?

Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – the Huskers are a team to watch out for. With their recent win over Illinois serving as a statement victory, they have the potential to make some noise in the college basketball world. Let’s see how they respond to the challenge ahead.

Nebraska 80-74 Illinois (Jan 30, 2025) Game Recap

In a thrilling matchup between the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the Illinois Fighting Illini, it was Nebraska who came out on top with a hard-fought 80-74 victory.

The game started off with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense. Illinois took an early lead behind the hot shooting of their star guard, but Nebraska clawed their way back into the game with a balanced scoring attack.

In the second half, Nebraska turned up the intensity on both ends of the floor. Their defense forced several turnovers and turned them into easy transition buckets. The Cornhuskers also knocked down key three-pointers at crucial moments to keep Illinois at bay.

Illinois made a late push to cut into the lead, but Nebraska’s free throw shooting down the stretch sealed the victory for the Cornhuskers.

Key players for Nebraska included their leading scorer, who finished with a game-high 25 points, and their big man, who dominated the paint with a double-double.

Overall, it was a hard-fought and well-deserved win for Nebraska as they continue to climb up the standings in the Big Ten conference. Illinois put up a valiant effort, but ultimately fell short in this exciting matchup.

  • Defense wakes up, leads Huskers to win over No.18 Illinois

Fred Hoiberg said it on Wednesday when talking about his Nebraska basketball team that had dropped six straight games to Big Ten competition.

“We got to get a win. We have to get a win to get our guys some confidence and to get out of that mentality of, ‘here we go again,’” Hoiberg said then.

How about a massive upset win in overtime over the No. 18 Illinois Fighting Illini in your house, in front of your fans?

That should spark something and get the good vibes going again. Perhaps it’ll pump some life and that all-important confidence Hoiberg talked about back into the Huskers.

Behind a game-high 27 points from Brice Williams, which included eight of the Huskers’ 10 points in the extra period, Nebraska snapped its six-game losing streak with an 80-74 overtime win against Brad Underwood’s Fighting Illini on Thursday night inside Pinnacle Bank Arena.

With Illinois currently coming in at No. 10 in the NET ratings, that’s a nice Quad 1 win on the resume, should Nebraska need it at tournament time.

“Brice was absolutely phenomenal there down the stretch,” Hoiberg said after the game. “…We rode him all the way to the finish line. I’m proud of our guys. We needed this one in a big way.”

Williams recorded his ninth 20-point game of the season and 25th of his career. His 10 made field goals tied his season-high. Williams also had a season-high eight rebounds and four assists.

Hoiberg thought Williams was playing with the confidence he had from earlier this season.

“He was aggressive and he took his shots, no hesitation,” Hoiberg said. “I thought he guarded better out there. He rebounded, had five defensive rebounds. I’m just really pleased with Brice and how he responded. We’ve had a tough couple days, and we knew how big this game was for us to hopefully end this slide.”

Nebraska improves to 13-8 overall and 3-7 in the Big Ten while Illinois drops to 14-7, 6-5.

Neither team shot it well — Illinois was at 36%, Nebraska 40% — and Williams took 26 shots to get his 27 points. But Nebraska’s best player knew what to credit for the win after the game.

“Our defense kept us in the game,” Williams said. “We reached most of our goals tonight. We had to wake up, and tonight we woke up.”

Illinois, which was without its 7-foot-1 center and second-leading scorer for the third consecutive game, Tomislav Ivisic, came into the game with the top offense in league play at 85.8 points per contest.

But Nebraska’s defense, under fire the past three weeks for good reason, played much better on Thursday. Wasn’t perfect, Hoiberg said after the game, but certainly good enough, especially when it mattered the most, in overtime, when Illinois scored just four points.

Nebraska had a 10-point lead, 54-44, with 12:20 left in the second half. That edge disappeared when the Illini started seeing success with ghost actions where they slipped screens and knocked down 3s — they hit seven treys in the final 20 minutes.

But the Huskers stayed with it and communicated better defensively while getting key buckets from Williams down the stretch.

“We kept guarding, and that’s what we were looking to get back to,” Hoiberg said. “It’s obviously not always going to be pretty with this team, but if we guard like we did tonight, we’re gonna have a chance most nights that we step on the floor.”

The Huskers hounded Kasparas Jakucionis all night, too. Illinois’ star true freshman point guard from Lithuania, who could be a top-10 pick in the upcoming NBA draft, scored 18 points, which is better than his 15.9 average coming into the game, but he took 15 shots, went 3-of-10 from 3 and 3-of-4 at the free-throw line to get there.

But even when Illinois’ other future NBA player, true freshman Will Riley, went berserk in the second half and scored 13 points with three 3s, and Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn hit the game-tying 3 to send the game into overtime, Hoiberg said he saw improvement in the huddle.

“We never hung our heads. And that was the thing — when you get in the huddle and you got eye contact, and guys are talking to each other before we even get in there and start teaching, that’s growth,” Hoiberg said.

One area of the win that stuck out was the Huskers’ ball security — it was good. Nebraska valued the ball and turned it over only six times with just one at halftime. Illinois, on the other hand, had a tough time against Nebraska’s defense and had 17 turnovers. Nebraska used those extra possessions to score 17 points.

Toughness, or more accurately a lack of it, was a key talking point during the losing streak. Hoiberg and the Huskers knew the rebounding battle would be important in this one. Illinois came into the game statistically as the best rebounding team in the country, averaging 45 boards per contest with a margin of plus-11.

On Thursday, Illinois won that battle on the glass 58-42 overall and 20-13 in offensive boards. Twenty-one offensive rebounds turned into 15 second-chance points. But the Huskers did work in the paint themselves, too, with 13 O-boards that turned into 12 second-chance points.

“I thought we kept playing. Some of the other ones, we’d give up an offensive rebound and then give up an open three,” Hoiberg said. “But we kept rotating and contesting and, again, made a couple big stops late and got the ball to the right guy. We wanted to get the ball into Brice’s hands, and thought he made a couple phenomenal plays.”

Nebraska’s first West Coast swing in the new 18-team Big Ten is what’s up next.

The Huskers will travel to No. 16 Oregon (16-4, 5-4) for a game on Sunday with a tip time of 6:30 p.m. central. The Ducks, who are 8-3 at home this season, were on the road at UCLA on Thursday night.

Hoiberg said the vibe in the locker room after the win was “businesslike.” And that’s how it should be. Just because the losing streak was snapped doesn’t mean a season turnaround is happening.

“The guys know that we have to get over it quickly,” Hoiberg said. “If we don’t, it’s gonna affect us at our game in Oregon, and it’s not gonna be pretty. You gotta let it go. We can’t have a hangover effect.”

After the game at Oregon, Nebraska will not fly home. Instead, they’ll stay on the coast and travel to Seattle, where they’ll play struggling Washington (10-10, 1-8) on Wednesday night with a tip time of 9:30 p.m. central. The Huskies are on a losing streak themselves — six in a row. They’ll try to snap it at Minnesota on Saturday.

In a stunning upset, the Nebraska Cornhuskers’ defense stepped up big time to lead the team to a thrilling victory over the No.18 ranked Illinois Fighting Illini. After a lackluster start to the season, the Huskers’ defense came alive in this game, shutting down the Illini’s high-powered offense and forcing key turnovers to secure the win.

The Huskers’ defense came out firing on all cylinders, putting relentless pressure on Illinois’ quarterback and stifling their running game. The defensive line dominated the line of scrimmage, while the secondary came up with crucial interceptions to swing the momentum in Nebraska’s favor.

Leading the charge was standout linebacker, who wreaked havoc all game long, racking up tackles and disrupting Illinois’ offensive rhythm. The entire defense played with a sense of urgency and determination, flying to the ball and making plays when it mattered most.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Huskers were able to capitalize on the turnovers forced by the defense, putting points on the board and taking control of the game. Quarterback showed poise and composure, making key throws and managing the game effectively.

Overall, it was a complete team effort that led to this impressive win over a ranked opponent. The defense set the tone from the opening kickoff and the offense followed suit, executing when it mattered most. This victory is a testament to the resilience and determination of this Nebraska team, and it serves as a statement win that will surely turn heads across the college football landscape. Go Big Red!

The Ohio State Buckeyes (13-8, 5-5 Big Ten) visit the No. 20 Illinois Fighting Illini (14-7, 6-5) Sunday. Tip-off from Hilton Coliseum in Ames is set for 1 p.m. ET (CBS). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college basketball odds around the Ohio State vs. Illinois odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.

Ohio State picked up its third straight win Thursday with an 83-64 road beatdown of the Penn State Nittany Lions. The Buckeyes cashed as a 3.5-point underdog as the Under 147.5 hit with ease. Illinos outrebounded Penn State 41-23.  G John Mobley Jr. stuffed the stat sheet, dropping 19 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds.

Illinois is struggling, dropping 3 of its last 4 games after an 80-74 overtime loss Thursday to the Nebraska Cornhuskers. They failed to cover as a 4.5-point road underdog as the Under 157 cashed. G Kasparas Jakucionis was the only starter in double figures, putting up 18 points, with 13 rebounds and 4 assists. Turnovers were a killer, with the Illini giving it away 17 times.

Ohio State at Illinois picks and predictions

    Prediction

    Ohio State 81, Illinois 78

    Moneyline

    BET OHIO STATE (+220).

It’s a bit of a gamble, but these teams are heading in opposite directions. Momentum is huge in college hoops, and right now, Ohio State has it. The Buckeyes have won and covered 3 straight, including 2 on the road. Meanwhile, Illinois has failed to cover in 3 of its last 4 games, including a home loss in Champaign.

Ohio State is one of the best 3-point shooting teams in the Big Ten, hitting 37.3% from deep, with G Bruce Thornton knocking down a scorching 45.1%. They also lock down the perimeter, holding opponents under 30% on 3s.

The Buckeyes have covered in 4 of the last 6 meetings against Illinois, and with all the upsets we saw on Saturday, what’s one more on Sunday? I’m rolling with Ohio State to stay hot and get it done.

    Against the spread

    PASS.

If you’d feel more comfortable taking the points, that’s perfectly fine but I’m getting seduced by those +220 odds on the moneyline.

    Over/Under

    BET OVER 156.5 (-105).

This game has all the signs of a shootout. Both teams score 80-plus points a game and give up 70-plus points, so defense might be optional. The Over has cashed in 4 of their last 6 matchups, and Illinois has hit the Over in 4 of its last 6. Expect plenty of points.

Ohio State at Illinois Odds, Picks and Predictions

The Ohio State Buckeyes will travel to Champaign to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini in a Big Ten showdown on Saturday. Both teams are coming off impressive wins and will be looking to continue their winning ways.

The Buckeyes are currently favored by 7.5 points in this matchup, with the over/under set at 135 points. Ohio State has been dominant this season, boasting a 13-4 record and sitting near the top of the Big Ten standings. Led by star player E.J. Liddell, the Buckeyes have a potent offense that averages over 75 points per game.

On the other hand, Illinois has had a solid season as well, with a 12-5 record and a top-25 ranking. They have a dynamic duo in Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn, who have been lighting up the scoreboard all season long.

In this matchup, I like Ohio State to cover the spread and come away with the victory. The Buckeyes have been playing at a high level and have the offensive firepower to outscore Illinois. However, I expect this game to be close and high-scoring, so I would take the over on the point total.

Prediction: Ohio State 78, Illinois 72.
