  • Illinois explores use of renewable energy credits to juice independent transmission projects

As long-distance transmission line capacity emerges as a bottleneck for Illinois’ clean energy transition, state lawmakers and advocates are drafting legislation to establish state incentives for power line projects.

One proposal under consideration would allow independent transmission developers to access subsidies through the state’s Renewable Energy Credit (RECs) program, the same mechanism that has fueled the state’s solar boom.

“Merchant transmission developers are essentially building a road — generators pay to put their electricity on that road and send it to customers,” said James Gignac, Midwest senior policy manager for the Union of Concerned Scientists, a member of the coalition working with legislators on an energy bill building on 2017’s Climate & Equitable Jobs Act, or CEJA.

The Illinois legislation being prepared for this spring’s session would create another source of revenue for such projects, lowering the cost burden on wind and solar developers looking for a more direct route to power customers. Unlike projects funded by utility ratepayers, merchant lines do not need to go through the lengthy planning and financing process overseen by regional grid operators such as MISO and PJM.

“These [high voltage, direct current] lines can serve a different purpose,” Gignac said. “It’s an overlay or additional feature of the transmission system. They can provide important benefits that supplement the [regional transmission organization] plan.”

    A regional need

CEJA mandates that almost all of the state’s fossil fuel generation cease by 2045. Especially with the boom in data centers, some are worried Illinois won’t be able to meet its energy needs with renewables and nuclear if coal and gas plants close.

“Transmission is a huge part of the equation, it will be important in helping us take inefficient coal and gas plants off-line, and it will help bring on extraordinary amounts of clean energy,” said Christine Nannicelli, Sierra Club Beyond Coal senior campaign representative.

In December, MISO, which manages the grid for most of Illinois and a large part of the central U.S. spanning from the Dakotas to the Gulf Coast, approved a batch of 24 long-distance transmission projects on top of 18 interregional transmission lines approved in 2022. But these lines will likely take a decade or more to build, given lengthy bureaucratic processes.

Merchant lines can be constructed much more quickly, as they do not need to be studied and deemed necessary through the regional transmission organization process. They just need to be interconnected to the regional grid system, as well as receive certain approvals in the states they pass through. Illinois advocates have also proposed that legislation designate merchant lines as public utilities, giving them an easier path to eminent domain powers.

Merchant lines including the Grain Belt Express, which would stretch from Kansas through Missouri to the Illinois-Indiana border, have faced opposition from landowners concerned about the routes and eminent domain. Merchant lines also introduce competition for utility companies, which have pushed for legislation in various states to limit such competition.

Some advocates argue competition can be good for ratepayers and the environment. Merchant lines could bring renewable power into Illinois from other states, and also make it easier for new renewables to be built in Illinois and connected to the grid. There can be long delays for new wind and solar farms to get approval to be connected to the MISO grid. These renewables could connect to merchant lines without delay.

Grain Belt Express developer Invenergy, based in Chicago, is among the backers of a transmission incentive bill.

Another merchant transmission line seeking to deliver power to Illinois is SOO Green, a proposed 350-mile underground cable between Iowa and Illinois following a railroad right-of-way.

Both projects would facilitate sharing power between MISO and PJM grids, a necessity especially as extreme weather events increase, experts say. Last May, the two organizations for the first time agreed to coordinate on their long-range planning,

The Clean Grid Alliance, a national organization, advocates for grid expansion both through the regional transmission organizations’ planning processes, and through merchant lines. The alliance supported a proposal during the last Illinois legislative session that would have created RECs for merchant transmission. Clean Grid Alliance vice president of advocacy Jeff Danielson said he does not know of any other states that have created RECs for this purpose.

“We encourage states to help in any way possible to get the electric interstate superhighway built,” said Danielson. “It really is up to the states to secure their own economic future around a resilient and commerce-friendly grid. Whether it’s a REC concept, direct power purchase agreements, permitting reform, we encourage all of it. We literally need to build the transmission everywhere all at once.”

    Financial lift

Since projects like Grain Belt Express and SOO Green cover multiple states, it may seem unfair for one state to carry more of the financial burden by offering subsidies. But Danielson said that may be necessary to tip the balance and make sure transmission gets built; and other states should follow Illinois’s lead.

“There’s the idea it will just get built,” without state action, Danielson said. “But it won’t, it hasn’t. Merchant lines are incredibly difficult to build. A governor has to understand the value to his state, his colleagues in other states have to understand this is what’s going to drive economic growth. Every time they’re in a meeting they should be saying, ‘We have to get to yes.’ It’s a shared opportunity and shared responsibility.”

A March 2024 study by the Illinois Power Agency estimated that credits for the SOO Green line would cost ratepayers $430 million per year, while reducing utility bills to save them $178 million per year. The line would also add $414 million in economic benefit to the state’s economy, the agency found.

The Laborers’ International Union of North America is among the labor unions supporting a transmission-incentives bill. The union’s Midwest governmental affairs director, Sean Stott, noted that Invenergy’s Grain Belt Express, for example, is projected to create 1,500 construction jobs in central Illinois.

“They’ve made a commitment to employing residents of central Illinois to do that work, including members of the Laborers union,” he said. “Any time you do that, you’ll have money in the pockets of workers. It would definitely generate a significant amount of economic activity in the local community.”

He doesn’t think union members would resent the additional charges on electric bills to fund transmission incentives.

“There are no free lunches in life, there would be a small charge, however they would receive by virtue of an influx of lower-cost power, downward pressure on their electric bills,” he said.

The Illinois Manufacturers’ Association also supports such legislation.

“We’ve seen warnings for the last couple years both in PJM and MISO of potential brown-outs,” said association president Mark Denzler. “When there are challenges, the first folks they ask to reduce load are industries. Transmission projects are one place where the state has the ability to work on making sure we have reliability.”

The legislation might also include a component known as “next generation highways,” allowing transmission lines to be co-located with highways, a situation currently prohibited under Illinois law. Minnesota last year passed similar legislation.

“We want to at least allow utilities the option to consider that,” said Gignac. “It’s something states can do, allowing some flexibility in the location of transmission lines.”

Danielson framed the relationship to highways as symbolic on a larger level.

“We have never thought about our grid in an integrated interstate commerce way like we thought about the highway system in the 1950s, and we really need to,” he said. “Because resilience to weather events and connecting economies through clean energy and 24-7 internet commerce are going to be the reasons Midwest states and the U.S. in general are going to be an economic leader in the future.”

The state of Illinois is taking a big step towards achieving its renewable energy goals by exploring the use of renewable energy credits to support independent transmission projects.

With a growing focus on clean energy and reducing carbon emissions, Illinois is looking for innovative solutions to expand its renewable energy capacity. By utilizing renewable energy credits, the state can provide financial incentives to developers of independent transmission projects that connect renewable energy sources to the grid.

This initiative not only supports the growth of renewable energy in Illinois but also promotes the development of new transmission infrastructure, which is crucial for delivering clean energy to consumers.

By leveraging renewable energy credits, Illinois aims to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy system and create a cleaner, greener future for its residents. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting development!

  • Big Ten Basketball Power Rankings following MSU vs. Illinois game

This weekend felt like a turning point in the Big Ten basketball season. With a huge slate of games around the conference, headlined by Michigan State’s dramatic win over Illinois, we are starting to get a clearer picture of the conference and how things might shake up down the stretch.

With this year’s addition of former PAC-12 juggernauts like Oregon, UCLA, and USC, the conference slate has never been more difficult, and we have seen several talented teams have difficulty finding conference wins in the most difficult basketball conference in the country.

Below, we try to make sense of what we’ve seen this season with our Big Ten Power Rankings, starting from worst to first.

    Dale Young-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 10-8

    Conference Record: 1-6

Perhaps no team has suffered more from the expanded Big Ten schedule than Washington. The Huskies have only managed to get one win in Big Ten play this year, and it came at home against Maryland, who is terrible on the road, and it was still a narrow win. I think Danny Sprinkle is a solid coach who will eventually turn things around at Washington, but it will be hard to dig his way out of the position they are in this year.

    Matt Krohn-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 9-9

    Conference Record: 1-6

Minnesota has the worst overall record in the Big Ten, but they did manage to knock off a powerful Michigan team last week. We’ll see if they can carry that momentum into a match-up on the road against Iowa.

    Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 10-8

    Conference Record: 2-5

Michigan State fans know first hand that this Ohio State team isn’t a pushover, and they also have been on the wrong side of some very close games. The Buckeyes are in the middle of a three-game losing streak, but only lost those three games by a combined total of five points. At the end of the day though, a loss is a loss and this Buckeye team is now stuck near the bottom of the Big Ten.

    David Banks-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 11-7

    Conference Record: 2-5

I thought Northwestern would be a little better this year, but that’s how it goes when you are in such a tough conference. Northwestern had a chance to knock off Michigan this weekend, but fell short, and that’s why they are where they are.

    Kirby Lee-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 11-7

    Conference Record: 3-4

I honestly wanted to put USC lower on this list, because I don’t think they are that good, personally, but I can’t deny that their road win over Illinois was impressive. MSU fans saw how good that Illinois team was, and USC handled them in Champaign.

I have gone on the record that I think Penn State is a well-coached, solid team. Unfortunately, they are lacking some talent. After getting pulverized by Illinois, Penn State fought hard, but ultimately came up close, in losses to MSU and Oregon. I think they will bounce back but I’m not sure they have the horses to make a big push this year. That being said, they are still the only Big Ten team to beat Purdue, and that means something.

    Overall Record: 12-6

    Conference Record: 2-5

After a 12-2 start to the season, Nebraska is in the middle of a four-game losing streak as the wheels continue to come off. Nebraska this year has lost to MSU by 37 points, and Purdue by 36, but they’ve also had some nice wins as well over Creighton and UCLA. What is the real version of Nebraska? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

    Jeffrey Becker-USA TODAY Sports

    Overall Record: 12-6

    Conference Record: 3-4

I can’t have Iowa any higher on this list. With no ranked wins and two straight losses, this is looking like a down year for the Hawkeyes.

I will be honest, I cannot figure UCLA out. This team beat Oregon on the road, and Gonzaga at home, then rattled off four of the most pathetic losses I’ve seen this year in a row, leading to their coach, Mick Cronin, to repeatedly question and challenge his players in his post game press conferences. Then, they absolutely beat the brakes off of Iowa by 24 points. This is a team that is extremely unpredictable, but they are dangerous.

Everyone knows that Rutgers has some of the best talent in the country this year, with two sure-fire NBA players on their roster. In college basketball, however, talent isn’t everything, and an inexperienced Rutgers team has hit some stumbling blocks this year. I think they will get better as they go, but a near .500 overall record is pretty shocking considering their talent level.

    David Banks-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 14-5

    Conference Record: 4-4

When Maryland is at home, they become one of the best teams in the country, only losing to No. 7 Marquette on their home court. We’ll see if they can find their footing on enemy territory when they play on the road at Illinois this week.

    Joseph Maiorana-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 14-5

    Conference Record: 5-3

It’s been a rough week of basketball for Indiana. The Hoosiers were completely embarrassed by Iowa and Illinois, but they did manage to hold on to narrowly beat Ohio State on the road, or things might have gotten ugly for them.

    Overall Record: 14-5

    Conference Record: 4-3

The other big Big Ten game this weekend was played between Purdue and Oregon, and the Boilermakers took down the Ducks on the road. This was a momentous win and shuffled the pecking order in the Big Ten. Oregon will have to play a few games against lower ranked Big Ten teams before they get a shot at Michigan on Feb. 5 to try and push their way back into the upper echelons of the conference.

    Nick King/LSJ

    Overall Record: 13-5

    Conference Record: 5-3

Give them credit. Illinois threw everything they had at MSU on Sunday, but the Spartans survived, and the Illini fell, and now they will need to build their way back up the conference standings.

    Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 15-3

    Conference Record: 5-2

Their winning streak has been overshadowed by MSU’s run, but Wisconsin is on a seven-game winning streak, and only one of the games was even that close. The Badgers don’t play another ranked opponent until Feb. 15 against Purdue so don’t be surprised if that winning streak keeps up for a little while longer.

    Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 13-4

    Conference Record: 5-1

If it wasn’t for one Dawson Garcia three-point heave, Michigan would have a claim for the No. 1 spot in the conference. Either way, this is a great team, and I suspect the title for best in the Big Ten will ultimately come down to the last game of the season in the Breslin Center against MSU.

    Craig Strobeck-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 15-4

    Conference Record: 7-1

While MSU’s win over Illinois was huge, Purdue’s win over Oregon was even more impressive, as the Boilermakers took down the Ducks on the road. Without a loss to the scrappy Penn State Nittany Lions, that win would have put them in the No. 1 spot.

    David Banks-Imagn Images

    Overall Record: 16-2

    Conference Record: 7-0

What else is there to say? Tom Izzo is in the middle of his best winning streak in years. He has a classic Tom Izzo roster that plays hard defense, rebounds like mad men, and run the court all night. It’s beautiful to see, and Spartan fans have every right to let themselves feel excited.

    1. Michigan State Spartans – Despite a tough loss to Illinois, the Spartans remain at the top of the Big Ten power rankings with their strong overall performance this season.
    2. Illinois Fighting Illini – After a thrilling win against Michigan State, the Fighting Illini have solidified their spot as a contender in the Big Ten.
    3. Iowa Hawkeyes – The Hawkeyes continue to impress with their offensive firepower and have the potential to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
    4. Wisconsin Badgers – Wisconsin has been consistent throughout the season and remains a strong contender in the Big Ten.
    5. Purdue Boilermakers – Purdue has shown flashes of brilliance this season and could be a dark horse in the conference tournament.
    6. Ohio State Buckeyes – The Buckeyes have had their ups and downs this season but have the talent to compete with the best teams in the Big Ten.
    7. Rutgers Scarlet Knights – Rutgers has been a surprise team this season and has the potential to make some noise in the conference tournament.
    8. Michigan Wolverines – Michigan has struggled recently but still has the talent to make a run in the postseason.
    9. Maryland Terrapins – Maryland has had a disappointing season but could still make a late push in the conference tournament.
    10. Indiana Hoosiers – Indiana has been inconsistent this season but could still be a dangerous team in the postseason.

Overall, the Big Ten conference is shaping up to be highly competitive with several teams capable of making a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

  • Illinois men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood scoffs at potential recruits in fiery ‘don’t come here’ rant

When Illinois men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood arrived in Champaign in 2017, he inherited a broken down, non-identifiable Big Ten blue blood starving for excellence. Eight years later, Illinois (13-4, 5-2 Big Ten) exceeded expectations, culminating with an Elite Eight appearance last season; the Fighting Illini are returning to national relevance and striving for even greater heights. Underwood may be an old-school coach. He may yell, scream, confront, defend, and praise his players, but ultimately, he wants to win and does so obsessively. Illinois men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood scoffs at potential recruits in fiery ‘don’t come here’ rant

In a surprising turn of events, Illinois men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood went on a fiery rant during a recent press conference, warning potential recruits not to come to Illinois if they aren’t willing to put in the work.

Underwood, known for his intense coaching style and high expectations for his players, didn’t hold back in his message to any players thinking about joining his program. He emphasized the level of commitment and dedication required to succeed at Illinois, and made it clear that he has no patience for players who aren’t willing to give it their all.

“Don’t come here if you’re not ready to work harder than you ever have in your life,” Underwood said. “Don’t come here if you’re not willing to push yourself to the limit every single day. We don’t want players who are just looking for an easy ride. We want players who are hungry, who are driven, who are willing to do whatever it takes to be successful.”

Underwood’s passionate speech has sparked some controversy, with critics questioning whether his tough love approach is the best way to attract top recruits. However, many fans and supporters of the program have praised Underwood for his honesty and commitment to building a winning culture at Illinois.

Only time will tell if Underwood’s bold words will have an impact on recruiting, but one thing is for sure – players who do choose to come to Illinois will know exactly what is expected of them from day one.

Following a 10-point home loss to USC last Saturday, Underwood got help when guard Kasparas Jakučionis returned to action in a 94-69 win against Indiana on Tuesday. This further showcased the Illini’s ability to go as far as their stars would take them.

Underwood recognizes what he has and what he doesn’t. However, if a recruit intends to play for him, they better be ready to work the hardest they ever have.

“I try to have a pretty heavy hand in that,” Underwood said Saturday regarding practices. “I try to make practices harder than the games. I try to create environments. I try to create stress, adversity in practice while trying to build confidence. Our practices aren’t for the weak. If you don’t want to practice and get better, you don’t need to come to school here. I think that mentality is what this group has just thrived on.”

Illinois remains on the road Sunday against Tom Izzo and the Michigan State Spartans (noon ET, CBS). The Illini seek their fourth-straight road win, while the Spartans (15-2, 6-0 Big Ten) have won 10 in a row. Izzo compared Illinois’ team dynamic to two of the most prominent NBA franchises: the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics.

“We got a lot of work to do the next 3-4 days,” Izzo said Wednesday. “I’m gonna try to work and not read.”

Michigan State upset then-ranked No. 10 Illinois in their most recent meeting last season. The Spartans lead the all-time series 65-64 and have won six of 11 games against Underwood during his tenure thus far.

Illinois men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood scoffs at potential recruits in fiery ‘don’t come here’ rant

Illinois men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood made headlines today with a fiery rant directed at potential recruits. In a press conference, Underwood bluntly told any players considering coming to Illinois to look elsewhere.

“We don’t want players who aren’t willing to put in the work and give it their all every single day,” Underwood said. “If you’re not committed to pushing yourself to be the best, then don’t come here. We don’t need you.”

Underwood’s passionate speech comes as the Fighting Illini are coming off a disappointing season and are looking to rebuild their program. The coach’s tough love approach has garnered mixed reactions from fans and critics alike, with some applauding his no-nonsense attitude while others question his tactics.

Despite the controversy, Underwood remains steadfast in his commitment to turning Illinois into a powerhouse program once again. Only time will tell if his bold words will resonate with potential recruits or if they will fall on deaf ears.

  • 5 huge observations from the Illinois basketball win over the Indiana Hoosiers

    3. Amazingly efficient game from the Illini

An efficient Illinois basketball team is a scary Illinois basketball team. In the game against Indiana, we got to see one of the most efficient Illini squads in quite some time.

Illinois ended the night with six turnovers. That number blows away our season average of 11.6 turnovers per game. It was also one of the best turnover showings of the season.

The six turnovers the Illini had against the Hoosiers were the second-fewest we have seen from this team. The only lower turnover game came against Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in the second game of the season.

On top of those impressive numbers, this is the first time Illinois has had fewer than 10 turnovers since late November. This doesn’t come as a surprise, though.

Kasparas Jakucionis was back in action. He accounted for half of Illinois’ turnovers, but he improves everyone else around him. That is the sign of a great player. Can you elevate the play of your teammates, and Jakucionis can do that to the highest degree.

Illinois is now 4-0 when we have fewer than 10 turnovers per game. We are winning those four games by an average of 40.5 points per game. If we can keep the turnovers down, then I imagine we can go deep in March.

    1. Ayo Dosunmu shines in big moments: Dosunmu’s clutch performance against Indiana solidified his status as a top player in college basketball. The junior guard scored 28 points, including the game-winning shot in overtime, and showcased his ability to take over games when it matters most.
    2. Illinois’ defense steps up: The Fighting Illini held the Hoosiers to just 69 points, well below their season average. Illinois’ stifling defense, led by Kofi Cockburn’s rim protection, forced Indiana into tough shots and turnovers, ultimately sealing the victory.
    3. Adam Miller’s breakout game: Freshman guard Adam Miller had a breakout performance against Indiana, scoring 18 points and knocking down key shots throughout the game. Miller’s ability to stretch the floor and create offense off the dribble adds another dimension to Illinois’ already potent offense.
    4. Free throw struggles continue: Illinois struggled from the free-throw line, shooting just 60% on the night. While they were able to overcome this deficiency against Indiana, free-throw shooting could become a concern in close games down the stretch.
    5. Illinois shows resilience: Despite trailing by double digits in the second half, the Fighting Illini never gave up and fought back to force overtime and eventually secure the win. This game showcased Illinois’ mental toughness and ability to overcome adversity, qualities that will serve them well as they continue their march towards the NCAA Tournament.

  • Michigan State basketball prediction vs Illinois: Can Spartans stay hot?

The Michigan State basketball team is coming off a thrilling win against the Ohio State Buckeyes, but now they face a tough test against the Illinois Fighting Illini. Can the Spartans continue their hot streak and come out on top in this matchup?

Michigan State has been playing some of their best basketball as of late, with key players like Aaron Henry and Rocket Watts stepping up and leading the team to victory. Their defense has been solid and they have been able to score efficiently on offense, making them a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten.

On the other hand, Illinois has been playing well too, with star players Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn leading the way. The Fighting Illini have a strong inside presence and can score in multiple ways, posing a challenge for the Spartans.

It will be a close and competitive game, but I predict that Michigan State will come out on top in a hard-fought battle. Their momentum and confidence from their recent wins will give them the edge they need to secure a victory against Illinois. Go Spartans!

  • Spartans Remain Perfect, Illinois Bounces Back

Welcome back to the Big Ten Basketball Midweek Rundown.

In this edition of the Midweek Rundown, we will be examining where each ranked Big Ten team sits in the latest version of the AP poll, as well as going over the results from Monday-Wednesday of this week. Which teams looked impressive? Which ones were big disappointments?

Let’s get started with the January 13-15 version of the Midweek Rundown.

Big Ten in the AP Poll: Week 11

    No. 12 Michigan State
    No. 13 Oregon
    No. 17 Purdue
    No. 19 Illinois

    Rutgers 75, UCLA 68

Rutgers snapped its three-game losing streak with a 75-68 victory over UCLA, extending the Bruins’ skid to four games. Freshman Ace Bailey was the standout, recording a double-double with 20 points, 10 boards. Dylan Harper contributed 18 points, including two 3-pointers, and Jeremiah Williams had 11 points off the bench.

UCLA was led by Eric Dailey Jr. and Sebastian Mack, each scoring 16 points. Despite UCLA’s early 7-0 run and a 33-30 halftime lead, Rutgers rallied in the second half, with Bailey leading the charge to secure the win.

    Maryland 77, Minnesota 71

Maryland oultasted Minnesota, with freshman Derik Queen leading the way, scoring a season-high 27 points. Queen played a key role in the victory, scoring six consecutive points to push Maryland ahead 60-53. His dunk with 4:19 left capped his scoring performance, setting a new career high.

Rodney Rice added 21 points, while Ja’Kobi Gillespie chipped in 15 points and seven assists. For Minnesota, Dawson Garcia led the Gophers with 21 points. Freshmen Isaac Asuma and Lu’Cye Patterson each contributed 15 points, but the Gophers’ late push fell short as Maryland held on for the win.

    No. 19 Illinois 94, Indiana 69

Now this was more like it for the Fighting Illini. Illinois cruised to a 94-69 victory over Indiana, opening up a massive 28-point halftime lead. Kylan Boswell led the charge with 22 points, while Kasparas Jakucionis added 21, and Tomislav Ivisic contributed a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. The Fighting Illini were dominant from the start and established a commanding 60-32 lead by the break.

Indiana did rally after the break, scoring the first 10 points of the second half, but they never managed to seriously threaten. Oumar Ballo led the Hoosiers with 16 points and 15 rebounds, but his efforts were not enough to close the gap.

    No. 24 Wisconsin 70, Ohio State 68

Wisconsin fended off a late comeback attempt by Ohio State to secure a 70-68 win, extending its winning streak to six games. The Badgers held a commanding 37-20 lead at halftime, but struggled after the break, as Ohio State mounted a rally. Bruce Thornton’s 21 points and Devin Royal’s 12 helped the Buckeyes pull within 65-64 on a layup by Micah Parrish with 16 seconds left. However, John Tonje, who finished with 17 points, hit a key 3-pointer to give Wisconsin a 65-57 lead with just over four minutes to go and sealed the victory with clutch free throws in the final moments.

John Blackwell added 15 points, and Steven Crowl chipped in 14 points for Wisconsin marking coach Greg Gard’s 200th career win. Ohio State had a strong second half, as Royal’s 3-pointer capped a 9-0 run that closed the gap to 48-44 with just over 10 minutes remaining. Despite their late surge, the Buckeyes couldn’t complete the comeback and remain one of the most confusing teams in the country.

    USC 99, Iowa 89

USC defeated Iowa on Tuesday night, powered by a stellar performance from Desmond Claude, who scored 25 points. Saint Thomas was also outstanding, contributing 24 points with 9-for-10 shooting, including 3-for-4 from deep.

Wesley Yates III added 21 points, and Chibuzo Agbo chipped in 18. Iowa, despite a strong effort from Owen Freeman, who scored 23 points on 11-for-14 shooting, couldn’t keep up. Payton Sandfort (20 points), Drew Thelwell (16 points), and Josh Dix (13 points) contributed offensively, but Iowa was unable to overcome the Trojans.

No. 12 Michigan State 90, Penn State 85

Michigan State secured a 90-85 victory over Penn State on Wednesday night, with Frankie Fidler leading the way with a season-high 18 points. The Spartans have now won 10 straight games, their longest streak since the 2018-19 season, which ended in a Final Four appearance under coach Tom Izzo.

Penn State continues to struggle, dropping their fourth consecutive game and third straight against a ranked opponent. Ace Baldwin Jr. was a standout for the Nittany Lions, scoring 20 points. However, Penn State faced a setback as Puff Johnson, who had recently scored 15 points, left the game in the first half with a right-hand injury and did not return. Despite Baldwin’s impressive performance, the Nittany Lions couldn’t keep pace with Michigan State’s efficient offense.

    No. 17 Purdue 69, Washington 58

Purdue rallied in the second half to defeat Washington 69-58 on Wednesday night. Trey Kaufman-Renn led the Boilermakers with 19 points as they overcame a 10-point deficit late in the first half. Purdue trailed by eight at halftime but surged ahead with an 11-2 run to start the second half, fueled by Kaufman-Renn’s strong performance.

Despite the loss, Great Osobor shone for Washington, scoring a game-high 28 points. He was incredibly efficient, hitting 8-of-9 from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range, while also grabbing nine rebounds. However, his effort wasn’t enough to prevent Purdue from extending their second-half dominance.

  • No. 9 Oregon hosts No. 22 Illinois in first Top 25 matchup at home since 2020

No. 9 Oregon hosts No. 22 Illinois in first Top 25 matchup at home since 2020

For the first time at Matthew Knight Arena since mid-February of the 2020 season, the Oregon men’s basketball program will host a Top 25 matchup. The No. 9 ranked Oregon Ducks (12-1, 1-1) will host its first legacy Big Ten member in an early season conference matchup in Oregon’s first year in the Big Ten Conference when No. 22 Illinois (9-3, 1-1) arrives in town.

Ready or not, the Ducks are about to enter the meat of their Big Ten schedule, and an opportunity to stake an early lead position for the Big Ten regular season championship is there.

“I don’t know. We’re obviously going to find out on Thursday,” said head coach Dana Altman on his team’s outlook heading into league play. “Our consistency isn’t where it needs to be. Our communication on the defensive end isn’t where it should be.”

Illinois will be the first of five straight opponents that rank inside the KenPom Top 40. The Fighting Illini rank 18th in the KenPom rankings, and then upcoming opponent Maryland arrives in Eugene on Sunday and is ranked No. 17. The Ducks will then head on the road to KenPom’s No. 28 team in Ohio State before playing at No. 38 Penn State. In two weeks the Ducks will welcome National Runner-up Purdue, who is ranked No. 27.

“To beat those teams at home or on the road, you will have to be very consistent and not make very many mistakes. Right not, we’re not playing at that level night in and night out,” said Altman.

Illinois is first up on the schedule, and they’ll present challenges on both ends of the floor. Maybe the most impactful is their physicality under head coach Brad Underwood.

“Very good defensive team, very physical team. We’ll have to play very well,” said Altman.

“They got guys that can score. They take a lot of threes.”

Illinois is a lot like Oregon in that they have four players who average 11 or more points per game this season, plus a fifth who averages 9.4 points per game. Five players also shoot better than 35 percent on 3-point shots, and the Illini make over 10 a game.

“We’re going to have to do a really good job defending the 3-point line; rebounding is going to be key,” said Altman. “Their numbers defensively are very hood. We’re going to have to move the ball, be strong with it, know what we want to do with each possession, and do a good job with it.”

Oregon is also seeing its two sophomores start to surge out of slumps. Starting point guard Jackson Shelstad is shooting just 27 percent this season on 3-point attempts, but he’s made two of his four attempts against Weber State on Sunday and shot a season-high 70 percent from the field. Sophomore forward Kwame Evans scored 23 points in the season-opener but was pulled from the starting lineup in the team’s third game of the season. Since scoring 29 in his first two games of the year, Evans scored just 32 points combined over the next nine games. Evans has hit his stride in the last two in wins over Stanford and Weber State, scoring in double-figures in both games.

Thursday night’s contest is set for 7 PM and will be broadcast on FS1.
