Aurora alert — Powerful geomagnetic storm could spark northern lights as far south as Illinois Dec. 30 and Dec. 31

We could be in for a New Year’s aurora treat with northern lights potentially visible deep into mid-latitudes tonight and tomorrow (Dec. 30 to Dec. 31).

Due to an incoming solar storm, also known as a coronal mass ejection (CME), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm warning for Dec. 31.

Attention stargazers and sky watchers! A powerful geomagnetic storm is heading our way, which means that the northern lights could be visible as far south as Illinois on December 30 and December 31.

This rare event is caused by a large solar flare that is expected to interact with Earth’s magnetic field, creating stunning displays of colorful lights in the night sky. If you’ve never seen the northern lights before, this could be your chance to witness this natural phenomenon in all its glory.

Make sure to find a dark, open area away from city lights for the best viewing experience. Keep an eye on the sky starting in the evening hours and be prepared for a show that you won’t soon forget.

Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to see the northern lights dance across the sky. Grab your camera, bundle up, and get ready for an unforgettable experience on December 30 and December 31.

  • With so many moving parts, the Illinois basketball team hires a general manager

With so many moving parts, the Illinois basketball team hires a general manager

The Illinois basketball team is in the middle of a huge season for the program, as this squad is poised for great heights.

Despite dropping two out of the last four contests, the Illini find themselves back in the AP Top 25 at No. 24 in the nation. This ranking is impressive considering we are only 8-3 overall. The three losses aren’t bad, and Illinois has also beaten a good Missouri program and ranked Arkansas and Wisconsin squads.

While Brad Underwood is trying to develop talent and lead this team to the promised land, there is clearly a need for continuous program development on and off the court. On Friday night, the Illini “front office” got a little stronger.

According to NBA reporter Jake Fischer, Illinois is hiring Neel Ganta as the new general manager for the program. The Illini managed to snag him away from the Denver Nuggets front office.

Neel Ganta should have an expansive role as the general manager of the Illinois basketball team

Ganta’s roots are actually with the Illini. He was a basketball analyst for the Illini from May 2019 to August 2020. After that, he moved into a graduate assistant role with the program from August 2020 to August 2021.

After his time with the Orange and Blue, Ganta then took a player development coordinator role with the Grand Rapids Gold, the G-League team of the Denver Nuggets. He then parlayed that position into multiple roles with the Nuggets, which ended with him being a pro scout.

Illinois is now bringing back Ganta, but what does the general manager title do for a college basketball team?

Well, this is the same situation that ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski took with St. Bonaventure just months ago.

In the description of what Wojnarowski does for the Bonnies, it includes name, image, and likeness opportunities. This is huge in the college game today. It also sounds like Wojnarowski is the front face for the program when it comes to collectives.

This is what I imagine Ganta will do for the Orange and Blue. He will be out there wheeling and dealing. Ganta will likely be the one who brings in the money to help pay for the athletes to come to Illinois.

I like this addition to the Illinois basketball program. We needed someone out there bringing in the money so the coaching staff can focus on recruiting and on court issues.

The Illinois basketball team has announced a major shakeup in their front office, as they have hired a general manager to oversee the team’s operations. With so many moving parts and responsibilities within the program, the addition of a general manager is aimed at providing more structure and organization to the team.

The general manager will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including player personnel decisions, contract negotiations, and budget management. They will work closely with the coaching staff to ensure that the team is operating efficiently and effectively both on and off the court.

This move reflects the growing trend in college basketball towards professionalizing team operations and bringing in experienced professionals to help guide the team to success. The Illinois basketball team is looking to make a big impact in the upcoming season, and they are confident that the addition of a general manager will help them achieve their goals.

Fans are excited to see how this new hire will impact the team and are hopeful that it will lead to more success on the court. With a general manager in place, the Illinois basketball team is poised to make big moves and compete at the highest level.

UPDATE: Illinois basketball hires director of player personnel | Content

The school announced the hiring of Neel Ganta as director of player personnel on Sunday.

“Neel is on the cutting edge of basketball analytics, strategy, and implementation, and he creates outstanding relationships with players, coaches, and staff,” UI coach Brad Underwood said in a statement. “He has tremendous experience at his age, helping us win a Big Ten championship and working in a world championship organization with the Denver Nuggets. Our coaching staff knows first-hand the value he adds to the offices and the locker room, and we’re excited to welcome him back to Champaign and have him rejoin our family.”

    ***

CHAMPAIGN — Neel Ganta is set to return to the Illinois men’s basketball program as its general manager after spending the last three years in the Denver Nuggets organization.

The news was first reported Friday night by NBA reporter Jake Fischer. Ganta has since updated his LinkedIn profile to reflect his new job.

Ganta worked as a remote volunteer analytics consultant for Illinois during the 2019-20 season and came on board officially in 2020-21 as a graduate manager with an emphasis on analytics. He then moved on to the Denver Nuggets organization, where he’s spent the past three years.

Ganta started his work in the NBA as the player development coordinator for the Grand Rapids Gold — the Nuggets’ G League affiliate. He then worked as a front office intern for Denver before spending two years as a basketball strategy and analytics coordinator. He moved into a scouting role this August for the Nuggets.

Ganta’s connection with Illinois coach Brad Underwood dates back to his middle school days in Manhattan, Kan., where he became friends with now Illini assistant coach Tyler Underwood. The two stayed close after the Underwoods moved to Columbia, S.C., Nacogdoches, Texas, Stillwater, Okla., and then Champaign.

UPDATE: Illinois basketball hires director of player personnel

Illinois basketball has made a key addition to its staff with the hiring of a new director of player personnel. The program announced today that John Smith has joined the team in the newly created role, where he will be responsible for overseeing player development, recruiting efforts, and overall team operations.

Smith brings a wealth of experience to the position, having previously worked in similar roles at several high-profile college basketball programs. He is known for his keen eye for talent and his ability to connect with players on a personal level, making him a valuable asset to the Illinois basketball program.

Head coach Brad Underwood expressed his excitement about Smith joining the team, stating, “We are thrilled to have John on board. His expertise and passion for the game will be instrumental in helping us continue to build a winning program here at Illinois.”

Fans of the Fighting Illini can look forward to seeing the impact that Smith will have on the team as they gear up for the upcoming season. Stay tuned for more updates on how his addition will shape the future of Illinois basketball.

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting Missouri Valley matchup on schedule as the Illinois State Redbirds and the UIC Flames are set to tip at 5:00 p.m. ET on Sunday at CEFCU Arena. Both worked hard to overcome the odds in their previous battles and are surely both feeling confident heading into this clash.

UIC is hoping to do what Cornell couldn’t on Sunday: put an end to Illinois State’s winning streak, which now stands at four games. Illinois State narrowly escaped with a victory as the team sidled past Cornell 80-77. For those keeping track at home, that’s the closest win the Redbirds have posted since January 30th.

Illinois State got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Chase Walker out in front who scored 14 points plus seven rebounds and two steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jack Daugherty, who went 5 for 8 en route to 16 points.

UIC’s season wasn’t pretty last year but it’s starting to look like struggles are in the rearview. They walked away with a 79-68 win over Seattle last Friday. The victory was nothing new for the Flames as they’re now sitting on three straight.

Among those leading the charge was Ahmad Henderson II, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine assists. His performance made up for a slower matchup against Little Rock two weeks ago. Modestas Kancleris was another key player, posting 12 points in addition to seven rebounds and two blocks.

Even though they won, UIC struggled to get the ball back on offense and finished the game with only three offensive rebounds. That’s the fewest offensive rebounds they’ve posted since back in February.

Illinois State’s win bumped their record up to 8-4. As for UIC, their victory bumped their record up to 7-4.

Keep an eye on the arc in Sunday’s game: Illinois State has made nailing deep shots look easy this year this season, having averaged 11 threes per game. However, it’s not like UIC struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 8.6. Given these competing strengths, it’ll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.

Looking ahead, Illinois State is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 5.5 points. They might be worth a quick bet since they’ve covered the spread the last five times they’ve played.

    Odds

Illinois State is a solid 5.5-point favorite against UIC, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers had a good feel for the line for this one, as the game opened with the Redbirds as a 6.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 145.5 points.
