The competition’s new format has thrown up plenty of drama so far, even if the stakes didn’t feel quite as high as previous years’ group stages
So there we have it. After five gruelling months and 144 games, including 18 in one night on Wednesday, the inaugural Champions League league phase is finally over.
The final matchday certainly delivered on the entertainment front, with 64 goals smashed in, including five in Liverpool’s clash with PSV in Eindhoven, six in Aston Villa’s home win over Celtic, and seven in Lille’s demolition of Feyenoord. “It was a little bit chaotic at times because there were goals going in everywhere,” former Rangers striker Ally McCoist said on TNT Sports. “I don’t think I would be able to watch just the one game in my house, on my sofa, ever again. It was sensational.”
It’s difficult to argue with that assessment, but the journey beforehand was a real slog. We still have another 16 games to get through before the round of 16, too, with the play-off knockout round set to be played in mid-February.
Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter, Atletico Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Villa don’t have to worry about that; they are automatically through after finishing in the top eight. But a host of other huge clubs underperformed as the overall competitiveness levels on the elite European stage dropped significantly.
The argument over whether the new format can be considered an immediate success will very much depend on allegiances, and with that in mind, GOAL brings you the winners and losers from the 2024-25 league phase…

These teams will need to regroup and improve if they want to have any chance of making a run in the competition.

AUSL Inaugural Mock Draft – NewsBreak
With the AUSL (Athletes Unlimited Softball League) Inaugural Draft happening January 29 live at 8:00 p.m. ET, streaming on the ESPN App as well as the newly-launched AUSL YouTube page, the Softball America staff wanted to create its own mock draft to have fans imagine what it’ll look like come Wednesday evening.
The AUSL Inaugural Draft will determine the initial 12 players to be selected to play for each of the league’s first four teams: the Bandits (led by General Manager Jenny Dalton-Hill and Head Coach Stacey Nuveman-Deniz), Blaze (General Manager Dana Sorensen and Head Coach Alisa Goler), Talons (General Manager Lisa Fernandez and Head Coach Howard Dobson) and Volts (General Manager Cat Osterman and Head Coach Kelly Kretschman).
The General Managers – in consultation with their Head Coaches – will begin the process of assembling their 16-player rosters at the AUSL Inaugural Draft. The four remaining roster spots will be filled with the incoming class of the top NCAA talent who will finish their eligibility in May, as well as one free agent pick for each club.
The Bandits, via a lottery, were awarded the first overall selection, to be followed by the Blaze, Talons and Volts. To ensure parity, picks will be selected in a rotating draft order. The first pick of each round will rotate among the four teams as follows for all 12 rounds of the draft:

Singer Jewel surprised the packed room of MAHA supporters at the Waldorf Astoria when she arrived on stage to perform a moving, acoustic rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” hours after President Trump took the oath of office.
The Grammy Award-winner simply stunned, wearing a timeless black-and-white gown as she belted out the tune to a silent, awe-inspired crowd, while Kennedy wrapped his arm around wife Cheryl Hines, who was wearing a one-shoulder Romona Kaveza gown.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have revealed that Erin Andrews and Charissa Thompson will headline the keynote session of the She is Football Women’s Summit, part of the inaugural She is Football Weekend, presented by Jabil. The keynote session will feature a live recording of Andrews’ and Thompson’s podcast, “Calm Down with Erin & Charissa,” conversations about their career, and more. The live show will serve as the finale for the She is Football Women’s Summit, slated for Friday, March 7, at Raymond James Stadium. Audrey Hepburn’s son, Sean Hepburn Ferrer, has shared his reaction to Ivanka Trump’s ball gown that paid tribute to his mother.
Ivanka attended the Inaugural Liberty Ball on Monday (January 20) — following her father Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration — wearing a recreation of Hepburn’s iconic look from the 1954 film, Sabrina.
Following the ball, Ferrer shared a statement about the look, noting that he wasn’t surprised to see that Ivanka was inspired by his mother’s fashion sense.
“It is no wonder that growing up in a family which knew our mother as a household name she chose to draw inspiration from her,” he told the Daily Mail in a statement. “To seek the ultimate elegance and class reference, for an occasion such as this one – the inauguration and the 32nd anniversary of our mother’s passing and, most of all, Martin Luther King’s day. What a cocktail!”
He also said that Ivanka’s tribute showed that Hepburn’s “legacy has grown to become transgenerational and transitional” throughout the last 71 years.
“Her elegance, which has its roots in her inner beauty and spirit, is often a reference point, an anchor, for many celebrities, actresses and models in these times in which we appear to have somewhat lost our way,” Ferrer added of his mother, who died in 1993 of appendix cancer at the age of 63.

Donald’s daughter, who attended the event with her husband Jared Kushner, paired the look with black satin gloves, black high heels, and a diamond necklace.
Following the ball, the 43-year-old also acknowledged her admiration for the Breakfast at Tiffany’s star and described the work that was put into recreating the dress.
“Audrey Hepburn has long been a personal inspiration to Ivanka,” a representative for Ivanka told Page Six on Tuesday. “She views it as a great privilege to honor her legacy in this way, and is incredibly grateful to the team at Givenchy for bringing this moment to life.”
During the inauguration on Monday, Ivanka also turned heads with a different outfit. Before heading to the U.S. Capitol building that morning, she arrived outside St. John’s Church with her children — Arabella, 13, Joseph, 10, and Theodore, eight — donning an emerald green, cinched pantsuit with a long-sleeved, asymmetrical hemmed coat wrapped and belted around her.

On Instagram, the popular fashion account @dietprada, shared an image of Strahovski’s character in a long matching green cape and leather glove, just like Ivanka’s swearing-in ceremony get-up.
“She literally watched this show and thought, ‘I don’t see why everyone hates Serena Joy, she’s just a good christian woman,’” one person wrote in the comments of the post, while another said: “It’s 100 percent intentional.”

Similar to Carrie Underwood‘s performance on Inauguration Day, Billy Ray Cyrus‘ 12-minute stint onstage at President Trump’s Liberty Inaugural Ball Monday was plagued with technical difficulties. Following the televised show, Cyrus defended his decision to perform and responded to viewers critical of his performance.
“I wouldn’t have missed the honor of playing this event whether my microphone, guitar and monitors worked or not,” Cyrus wrote in an Instagram post Tuesday. “I was there because President Donald J. Trump invited me.”
With a muted microphone and guitar, a hoarse Cyrus attempted to sing both his verse and Lil Nas X‘s verse on “Old Town Road” at the post-inauguration ball in Washington, D.C. The country vet then began to roam the stage and snap his fingers to an a cappella rendition of his Nineties hit, “Achy Breaky Heart.”
“I had a ball at the Liberty Ball last night and I’ve learned through all these years when the producer says ‘you’re on,’ you go entertain the folks even if the equipment goes to hell,” he continued in his IG post. “I was there for the people and we had a blast. That’s called rock n roll!!!”
Since his performance, online users slammed the country artist calling the show a “train wreck” and an “epic disaster.” Cyrus referred to Underwood mid-performance, who had to sing without a prerecorded track after a technical error. “In life when you have technical difficulties you just gotta keep going or as President Trump would say ‘You gotta fight,’” Cyrus said.
On Sunday at the “Make America Great Again Victory Rally,” Kid Rock performed “All Summer Long” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” while the Village People performed “Y.M.C.A.” at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. Country artists Jason Aldean, the Rascal Flatts, and Parker McCollum also performed in support of Donald Trump‘s Inauguration Day.

Colorado political leaders react to Trump’s inaugural address
DENVER — Like others across the country, many of Colorado’s political leaders viewed President Donald Trump’s inaugural address through a partisan lens.
After being sworn into office as the 47th president on Monday, Trump promised to make Americans’ lives better, starting with cracking down on illegal immigration.
“All illegal entries will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came,” Trump said.

Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Boebert said the Trump-Vance administration will put the interests of Coloradans first.
“After a disastrous four years of suffering through the crime and drugs brought into our communities by an open Southern border, inflation hitting record-highs while ranchers and farmers can barely survive, and a failure to stand up for our nation’s interests as foreign enemies cause chaos, today’s inauguration of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance marks the start of a new, magnificent era for America,” Boebert said in a statement.
“Today’s inauguration was highlighted by the most reinvigorating speech by any President,” State Rep. Ryan Armogost, R-Berthoud, wrote on X. “With a no-nonsense powerful President and majority in our US Capitol and US Supreme Court, we can finally fix the travesties caused by the 12 years of Obama/Biden.”
The Colorado Democratic Party issued a statement, saying Trump would take the country backward.
“If this is anything like last time, the rich will get richer while the rest of us struggle to get by,” the statement read. “Colorado Democrats stand ready to fight back against mass deportations, inflationary economics, unqualified nominees, tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, and attacks on our fundamental freedoms.”
State Rep. Junie Joseph was one of just a handful of Democratic politicians in Colorado to issue a public statement about the inauguration on Monday afternoon.
“On MLK Day, I was hoping to hear a message of love, unity and compassion, not one of division and hate,” Joseph said. “As a woman and an immigrant, I’m deeply concerned for our children, who could face the devastation of becoming orphans under Trump’s immigration policies. Let’s honor Dr. King’s legacy by fostering a future of love, inclusion, and justice for all.”

Fear, uncertainty grow for potential ICE operations in Denver metro area
University of Denver political science professor Seth Masket said Trump’s pledge to unify the nation with his speech fell short.
“I thought it was pretty divisive, pretty aggressive. I thought far more so than his first inaugural address [in 2017],” said Masket. “This one, I thought, was a lot more vengeful in its tone.”
Masket said he expects the courts to play an important role as Trump implements his agenda.
In addition to working with Congress to implement his agenda, Trump said he would issue executive orders.
“He’s already said he’s going to essentially get rid of birthright citizenship, which is in the 14th Amendment,” Masket said. “An executive order doesn’t override the 14th Amendment.”
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who attended the inauguration as chairman of the National Governors Association, told Denver7 he hopes to have a good relationship with Trump and his administration.
“When it benefits Coloradans, we’re going to work with them, and if it hurts Coloradans, I’m never afraid to stand in opposition,” said Polis.
After his inaugural address, Trump spoke to supporters in Congress and attended an inaugural parade, where he addressed supporters and signed a series of executive orders.
