Massachusetts U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss goes ‘On The Record’ about Donald Trump’s inauguration

IT IS SUNDAY, JANUARY 19TH. CONGRESSMAN JACK A+ IS OUR GUEST. LET’S GO ON THE RECORD NOW SERVING HIS THIRD TERM ON CAPITOL HILL. THE FOURTH DISTRICT DEMOCRAT PREPARES FOR A SECOND TRUMP PRESIDENCY. THE LESSONS FROM THE 2024 ELECTION AND HIS PRIORITIES MOVING FORWARD. TIME TO GO ON THE RECORD FROM WCVB CHANNEL 5 THE INSIDE WORD FROM WASHINGTON TO BEACON HILL. TODAY’S NEWSMAKERS ARE GOING ON THE RECORD. WELCOME TO OTR. HI EVERYBODY. I’M BEN SIMMONEAU ED HARDING ZOFF ON THIS SUNDAY AND I’M SHARMAN SACCHETTI. AND WITH US AT THE TABLE, CONGRESSMAN JAKE AUCHINCLOSS. HE REPRESENTS THE FOURTH DISTRICT. IT STRETCHES FROM BROOKLINE TO FALL RIVER. IN NOVEMBER, HE WAS ELECTED TO A THIRD TERM IN OFFICE. THANKS FOR BEING HERE, JAKE. GOOD MORNING. THANKS FOR HAVING ME ON. GOOD TO SEE YOU. THANKS FOR COMING BACK. WE KNOW YOU’RE GOING TO BE AT THE CAPITOL TOMORROW FOR THE SECOND INAUGURATION OF DONALD TRUMP. WE ALSO KNOW THAT YOUR COLLEAGUES, AYANNA PRESSLEY AND BILL KEATING, ARE ELECTING NOT TO GO. WHY ARE YOU GOING? CAN’T SAY. I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. IT’S GOING TO BE BITTER COLD AND I’LL BE OUT THERE FOR 90 MINUTES HEARING DONALD TRUMP TALK. BUT THE BIGGEST CITY IN MY DISTRICT VOTED FOR DONALD TRUMP. FALL RIVER FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE CALVIN COOLIDGE VOTED FOR REPUBLICAN. I AM THERE ON BEHALF OF THOSE CONSTITUENTS AND ALL CONSTITUENTS IN THE MASSACHUSETTS FOURTH WHO VOTED FOR HIM. AND I’M THERE TO UPHOLD THE GREAT AMERICAN TRADITION OF THE PEACEFUL TRANSFER OF POWER. WE KNOW THAT PRESIDENT BIDEN HAS SAID THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MOMENT IN AMERICAN HISTORY. FOR HIM TO BE THERE, TO OBSERVE THAT PEACEFUL TRANSFER OF POWER. DO YOU THINK IT’S A MISTAKE FOR YOUR COLLEAGUES TO SKIP TOMORROW? NO. I THINK EACH OF MY COLLEAGUES IS GOING TO PURSUE THEIR CONSCIENCE. MINE TELLS ME THAT, WIN OR LOSE, WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT IN THE UNITED STATES AND FOR THE SUSTAINMENT OF OUR DEMOCRACY, IS THAT WE RESPECT THE RULES OF THE GAME. AND WHAT ABOUT NANCY PELOSI? SHE ALSO HAS SAID SHE’S NOT GOING TO BE THERE. NANCY PELOSI HAS GIVEN 50 YEARS OF HER LIFE TO PUBLIC SERVICE. I THINK SHE’S EARNED THE RIGHT TO SIT THIS ONE OUT. IN HIS FAREWELL ADDRESS LAST WEEK, PRESIDENT BIDEN WARNED AGAINST A TECH INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX AND AND A BILLIONAIRE OLIGARCHY HUNGRY FOR POWER IN AMERICA. ELON MUSK, MARK ZUCKERBERG, SAM ALTMAN, EVEN THE CEO OF TIKTOK WILL BE AT THE CAPITOL TOMORROW. WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THAT? I SHARE PRESIDENT BIDEN’S CONCERN, WHICH IS WHY WE HAVE TO FORCE TIKTOK’S DIVESTMENT FROM BYTEDANCE, WHICH IS AN APP OWNED AND CONTROLLED BY THE CHINESE COMMUNIST PARTY. AMERICANS DESERVE BETTER SOCIAL MEDIA. FOR THE LAST 15 YEARS, IT HAS INCITED TRIBALISM. IT HAS DETERIORATED MENTAL HEALTH FOR OUR KIDS. IT’S COARSENED OUR CIVIL DISCOURSE, AND IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY, BUT TO RECLAIM THE DIGITAL TOWN SQUARE, WE’VE GOT TO TAKE ON NOT JUST CHINESE COMMUNIST POWER, BUT ALSO AMERICAN CORPORATE POWER. WHAT DOES IT TELL YOU THAT THAT THE CEOS OF ALL THE BIG TECH COMPANIES ARE GOING TO BE RIGHT THERE, FRONT ROW SEATS TO THIS INAUGURATION, INCLUDING THE CEO OF BYTEDANCE, BY THE WAY? THAT’S CORRECT. IT TELLS ME THAT THROUGH HIS TAX AND REGULATORY POLICY, DONALD TRUMP IS GOING TO BE ORIENTED TOWARDS THOSE TECH BILLIONAIRES AND NOT TOWARDS LOWERING COSTS. SO LET’S TALK LET’S TALK ABOUT TIKTOK ACTUALLY QUICKLY, BECAUSE I KNOW THAT YOU SIT ON THE SELECT COMMITTEE ON CHINA. YOU SUPPORT THE LAW PASSED BY CONGRESS, SIGNED BY PRESIDENT BIDEN, THAT FORCES THE APP’S OWNER, BYTEDANCE, TO SELL OR HAVE THE PLATFORM BANNED IN THE UNITED STATES. YOU KNOW, MEMBERS WHO SUPPORT THIS LAW SAY THERE’S SECURITY ISSUES HERE, NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUES. IS THERE REALLY A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS APP OWNED BY THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT AND FACEBOOK OR INSTAGRAM, OR X OWNED BY OTHER APPS OWNED BY ONE OF THESE? YEAH, AMERICAN BILLIONAIRES WHO, FRANKLY, WILL DO WHATEVER THEY WANT WITH THE INFORMATION ANYWAY. THE ANSWER IS YES, BUT SO THE YES, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE. AND THE DIFFERENCE IS THAT UNDER CHINESE LAW, THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A PRIVATE COMPANY. SO THAT ALL OF AMERICAN’S PERSONAL DATA, THE ALGORITHM BY WHICH CONTENT IS AMPLIFIED OR SUPPRESSED, AS IN LIKE TIANANMEN SQUARE OR TIBET, IS ALL ANSWERABLE TO XI JINPING. 170 MILLION AMERICANS ARE GETTING THEIR NEWS AND THEIR ENTERTAINMENT FROM A PLATFORM OF CENSORSHIP AND PROPAGANDA ANSWERABLE TO OUR GREATEST FOREIGN ADVERSARY. THAT IS UNACCEPTABLE. BUT THEN THERE’S THE BUT. THE BUT IS. YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. THAT META AND SNAP AND DISCORD AND X ARE ALL ALSO ABUSING THE DIGITAL TOWN SQUARE BECAUSE THEY ARE ATTENTION FRACKING AMERICAN YOUTH. AND THEY ALSO NEED TO BE ANSWERABLE TO THE UNITED STATES CONGRESS. THE CHALLENGE IS CONGRESS HASN’T PASSED A LAW SINCE THE 1990S. SO WHAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN NOW THAT THE SUPREME COURT HAS RULED THE WAY THE SUPREME COURT HAS RULED? I MEAN, WHAT ARE PEOPLE TO EXPECT NOW WITH TIKTOK, THE MOST LIKELY SCENARIO IS THAT TIKTOK IS SOLD TO AN AMERICAN COMPANY. THAT IS STEP ONE. STEP TWO, AND THAT DOESN’T APPEAR IMMINENT, THOUGH IT DOESN’T APPEAR AT THIS POINT THAT IT’S IMMINENT. OH, I DON’T KNOW ABOUT THAT. I THINK THAT THE DEAL COULD HAPPEN FAST BECAUSE AFTER JANUARY, AFTER THE DATE WHEN IT HAS TO GO DARK, I THINK THERE’S GOING TO BE A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF POLITICAL AND BUSINESS PRESSURE TO GET THIS DEAL DONE. I DO NOT THINK IT IS SUSTAINABLE IN THE LONG RUN FOR THERE TO BE AN APP OPERATING IN THE UNITED STATES THAT CONGRESS AND THE SUPREME COURT HAVE ALL RULED CANNOT OPERATE WELL. THERE IS A KIND OF A BIPARTISAN GROUP THERE, NOT VERY BIG, BUT THERE IS A BIPARTISAN GROUP OF LAWMAKERS, INCLUDING SENATOR ED MARKEY, WHO THINKS THAT BYTEDANCE SHOULD BE ALLOWED THIS, THIS, THIS SALE OR SHUTDOWN SHOULD BE DELAYED. BUT DONALD TRUMP, PRESIDENT ELECT TRUMP IS ON BOARD WITH THAT. IS THAT WRONG? IS SENATOR MARKEY WRONG? SO THE WAY THAT THE LAW WAS WRITTEN AND I CO-LED THIS LAW, IS THAT THE PRESIDENT IS ALLOWED TO GIVE ONE EXTENSION, PROVIDED THAT THERE IS SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS TOWARDS A SALE. SO IF THE PRESIDENT WANTS TO GIVE THAT EXTENSION, HE THEN NEEDS TO COME TO CONGRESS AND SAY, AND HERE’S WHY. BECAUSE I HAVE A BUYER LINED UP AND WE JUST NEED TO GET THE LAST FINAL NEGOTIATIONS ACROSS THE FINISH LINE. WHAT’S MORE IMPORTANT, EVEN THOUGH, THAN WHO THE BUYER IS, IT’S DOES CONGRESS ENACT A LAW NOW THAT ACTUALLY HOLDS ALL OF THESE SOCIAL MEDIA CORPORATIONS TO THE SAME RULE IN THE 1990S, WE GAVE THEM SECTION 230, WHICH IS A SHIELD FROM OF IMMUNITY FROM ANY LIABILITY FOR THE CONTENT ON THEIR PLATFORMS. THEY HAVE ABUSED IT. IT IS TIME TO PIERCE THAT IMMUNITY SO THAT IF THEY’RE HOSTING THINGS LIKE DEEPFAKE PORNOGRAPHY TARGETING YOUNG WOMEN, THEY’RE LIABLE FOR IT. I MEAN, LOOK AT THE THE BROADCAST BUSINESS. WE ARE REGULATED, SUBJECT TO IT VERY HEAVILY. AND THAT HAS NOT CHANGED IN DECADES, DESPITE THE BUSINESS. AND SOCIAL MEDIA JUST IS NOT. SO YOU THINK IT’S TIME TO REALLY CRACK DOWN. OH MY GOODNESS. I’VE GOT TWO LAWS TO DO THIS. AND HERE’S THE THING IS, THEY COME WITH THIS SOB STORY ABOUT THE FIRST AMENDMENT. AND I’M LIKE, I’M SORRY, I DON’T THINK JAMES MADISON DRAFTED SECTION 230 IN THE 1990S. THE FIRST AMENDMENT IS DOING VERY WELL. YOU ARE TOTALLY PROTECTED FOR HARD HITTING JOURNALISM, AS YOU SHOULD BE. THERE’S A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PROTECTING PEOPLE’S POLITICAL EXPRESSION, WHICH IS SACROSANCT, AND ALLOWING SOMEBODY TO POST INTIMATE PRIVACY VIOLATIONS OF UNDERAGE GIRLS ON THEIR PLATFORM AND HAVE IT NOT BE A PROBLEM FOR THE CEO OF THAT COMPANY. SPEAKING OF SENATOR MARKEY, HE HAS SAID HE’S PLANNING TO RUN FOR ANOTHER TERM IN 2026. ARE YOU CONSIDERING A PRIMARY CHALLENGE? I AM CONSIDERING RUNNING FOR REELECTION TO AS A MEMBER OF CONGRESS. THE GOAL RIGHT NOW IS TWOFOLD. ONE, WE’VE GOT TO TAKE BACK THE HOUSE. WE’RE DOWN TWO SEATS AND WE NEED TO TAKE BACK THE HOUSE TO BE A CHECK ON DONALD TRUMP’S TAX REGIME THAT’S GOING TO HOOK UP THE WEALTHY AND THE WELL-CONNECTED. NUMBER TWO, WE WANT TO SURFACE A REALLY COMPELLING PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE AFTER THE MIDTERMS, SOMEONE WHO CAN BE THE NEW STANDARD BEARER FOR THE PARTY. ARE YOU RULING IT OUT? I’M NEVER I DON’T RULE THINGS OUT PROACTIVELY. I WANT TO BE OF SERVICE. I’M RUNNING FOR REELECTION TO BE A MEMBER OF CONGRESS. DO YOU THINK THAT HE’S TOO OLD TO RUN FOR REELECTION? I THINK THE QUESTIONS OF AGE HAVE NEVER BEEN AS RESONANT WITH ME AS THEY HAVE WITH IN OTHER QUARTERS. I LOOK ACROSS, FOR EXAMPLE, THE HOUSE DEMOCRATIC CAUCUS. I SEE OLDER MEMBERS IN THEIR 70S AND 80S WHO ARE DYNAMIC, WHOSE EXPERIENCE IS MAKING US A BETTER PARTY. I SEE YOUNGER MEMBERS WITH WHOM I STRONGLY DISAGREE AND I THINK ARE HOLDING US BACK. SO AGE TO ME IS NOT THE OPERATIVE ISSUE. WHAT IS OPERATIVE TO ME IS ARE YOU WILLING ARE YOU APPROACHING ISSUES WITH CURIOSITY? ARE YOU STAYING UP TO DATE WITH WHAT VOTERS CARE ABOUT? AND ARE YOU DYNAMIC? THERE HAS BEEN REAL PROGRESS ON ISRAEL’S WAR IN GAZA, ISRAEL AND HAMAS REACHING AN AGREEMENT ON A CEASE FIRE AND A HOSTAGE RELEASE. IF THIS DEAL HOLDS AND A REBUILDING PROCESS BEGINS, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SEE HAPPEN? HERE IS A TWO STATE SOLUTION POSSIBLE? I WANT THE HOSTAGES RELEASED FIRST AND FOREMOST, AND THEN I WANT A FINAL DEAL THAT IS CONSISTENT WITH ISRAEL’S SECURITY. AND THAT DOES NOT ALLOW HAMAS TO HAVE THE LEVERS OF GOVERNANCE WITHIN GAZA, BUT RATHER HAS A PALESTINIAN LED, ARAB FINANCED, WESTERN BACKED TRANSITIONAL GOVERNMENT THERE, PRIMARILY FOR SECURITY, INFRASTRUCTURE AND EDUCATION. SO MUCH OF OF THIS HAS BEEN MONTHS AND MONTHS AND MONTHS IN THE MAKING. DO YOU STILL FEEL LIKE THINGS COULD CHANGE EITHER QUICKLY? EITHER WAY? YES. THERE IS NO TRUST WITH HAMAS. THIS IS A BARBARIC DEATH CULT THAT HAS, AS PART OF ITS MANDATE, THE DESTRUCTION NOT JUST OF ISRAEL, BUT OF — GLOBALLY. SO THIS IS NOT AN ENTITY THAT CAN BE TRUSTED TO KEEP ITS WORD. WHAT HAS CHANGED, THOUGH, IS THE EXTERNAL CIRCUMSTANCES, BECAUSE AMERICA SUPPORTED ISRAEL IN HITTING HEZBOLLAH AND THE TERRORIST GROUPS IN SYRIA AND IRAQ AND HITTING IRAN DIRECTLY. HAMAS IS NOW ISOLATED, AND THAT’S WHY THIS DEAL IS COMING TO FRUITION. WE KNOW IRAN IS WEAKENED, SO PRESIDENT BIDEN IS PASSING OFF A PRETTY UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCE IN THE MIDDLE EAST FOR PRESIDENT ELECT TRUMP. DO YOU THINK ARE YOU OPTIMISTIC FOR THE FUTURE OF THE REGION, NOT JUST THE MIDDLE EAST? I WOULD ACTUALLY ADD EUROPE AND THE INDO-PACIFIC AS WELL. THIS IS GOING TO BE A BIG PART OF PRESIDENT BIDEN’S LEGACY THAT IS CURRENTLY BEING OVERSHADOWED. HE IS LEAVING AMERICA STRONGER IN THE INDO-PACIFIC BECAUSE OF ALLIANCES WITH SOUTH KOREA, JAPAN, INDIA, THE PHILIPPINES, AUSTRALIA. HE IS LEAVING UKRAINE IN A POSITION TO WIN THAT WAR. IF DONALD TRUMP SUSTAINS SUPPORT AND HE IS LEAVING ISRAEL STRONGER THAN IT WAS ON OCTOBER 7TH, WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD GET CREDIT FOR THIS DEAL? PRESIDENT ELECT TRUMP OR PRESIDENT BIDEN? PRIMARILY, THE FAMILIES OF THE HOSTAGES AND ISRAELIS THEMSELVES. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO DEMONSTRATED UNIMAGINABLE COURAGE IN TERMS OF NEGOTIATING THIS DEAL, IN TERMS OF NEGOTIATING THIS DEAL. AGAIN, THE ISRAELI PEOPLE, THEY ARE THE ONES WHO FOUGHT THROUGH, NOT JUST THE TERRORISTS ENCIRCLING THEM, BUT ALSO UNDUE INTERNATIONAL OPPROBRIUM TO PUT ISRAEL IN A POSITION TO GET THIS DEAL. GOT

As the inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump is set to take place on Monday, many lawmakers in Washington, including Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, have stated they will not attend.

However, Massachusetts U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss told ‘On The Record’ it is an important part of the democratic process for him to attend the inauguration.

“I think each of my colleagues is going to pursue their conscience,” Auchincloss said. “Mine tells me that win or lose, what’s most important in the United States and for the sustainment of our democracy, is that we play the rules of the game.”

When asked what he thought about Pelosi’s plans to skip the inauguration, Auchincloss said “Pelosi has given 50 years of her life to public service, I think she’s earned the right to sit this one out.”

Auchincloss was also asked what he thought of President Joe Biden’s farewell address, where he warned of a “tech industrial complex and a billionaire oligarchy hungry for power in America”, as well as the fact that Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman and the CEO of TikTok will be at the Capitol for Trump’s inauguration on Monday.

“I share President Biden’s concern,” Auchincloss said. “Which is why we have to force TikTok’s divestment from ByteDance, which is an app owned and controlled by the Chinese Communist Party. To reclaim the digital town square, we’ve got to take on not just Chinese communist power, but also American corporate power.”

Auchincloss is a member of the select committee on China and supports the proposed ban on the app in the U.S. The ban is set to take effect as soon as Sunday if an American company does not buy TikTok.

He argues that the ban is in the best interest of national security and not a violation of free speech.

When asked if he would consider a primary challenge against incumbent Massachusetts U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, Auchincloss said “I am considering running for a reelection as a member of Congress. We need to take back the House. I don’t rule things out proactively, I’m running for reelection to be a member of Congress.”

New presidency and partisan control of congress

Auchincloss has called Trump’s decision to nominate Pete Hegseth as secretary of defense “disappointing.”

“There’s three things that a secretary of defense has to do,” Auchincloss said. “They got to be a leader, they got to be a manager and they got to be a diplomat. He’s unqualified to do any of those things. He’s got zero foreign policy experience.”

He also called Trump’s proposal to seize the Panama Canal with military force “reckless.”

“The president is right that we should be upholding the Monroe Doctrine in the Western Hemisphere,” Auchincloss said. “The answer to that is not to get tough on our small ally. The answer is to get tough on China.”

Auchincloss was also asked why the City of Fall River, Massachusetts, part of his constituency, was won by Trump.

“I think we have to reorient ourselves towards the kitchen table,” Auchincloss said. “Voters felt like we took our eye off the ball. Voters in Fall River felt like between immigration and inflation, the Democrats had taken their eye off the ball.”

    Will Auchincloss run against Markey?

Political analysts Mary Anne Marsh and Rob Gray look to discuss whether or not Auchincloss will run against Markey and Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey’s State of the Commonwealth address on Thursday.

“I didn’t hear a ‘no’ on the run against Markey,” Marsh said.

“But here are the signs. He’s raised almost $5 million already, he had an op-ed in the Globe Friday [saying] on the opposite side of TikTok [ban] is Ed Markey, he’s gotten onto the energy and commerce committee, another place to draw a contrast with Ed Markey and had pledged to raise even more money. When you look at all the dots, the dots are starting to add up.”

Gray said he also thinks Auchincloss is looking at challenging Markey for the Senate seat.”The other thing is TikTok,” Gray said. “I think the congressman is making a name for himself out there as kind of the ‘police of social media’ and I think he’s being pretty effective about that.

“Marsh and Gray also looked at Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey’s State of the Commonwealth address on Thursday.

“Right now, she said they were going to do background checks on shelter residents, it never happened,” Gray said. “I think all these things make headlines, but are they implemented in policy?

“When Marsh was asked what she thought about the State of the Commonwealth speech, she said, “It could have been we do hard things and we did,” Marsh said. “She needs to put the blame on Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress.”

    Political highlights, low points

Marsh and Gray discussed whether a Republican has a chance of winning Auchincloss’ district, Wu’s plan to change Boston’s property tax structure and the tax on sugary drinks in Boston.

Rep. Auchincloss goes ‘On The Record’ about Donald Trump’s inauguration

In a recent interview on the popular news show ‘On The Record,’ Representative Jake Auchincloss opened up about his thoughts on former President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

When asked about the event, Auchincloss did not hold back in expressing his disappointment with Trump’s divisive and inflammatory rhetoric during the ceremony. He stated, “Trump’s inauguration was a missed opportunity for unity and healing in our country. Instead of reaching out to all Americans, he chose to double down on his divisive and inflammatory rhetoric, further deepening the political divide in our nation.”

Auchincloss went on to criticize Trump’s lack of leadership and his failure to bring the country together during his time in office. He emphasized the importance of leadership in times of crisis and expressed his hope that future presidents would prioritize unity and healing for the American people.

Overall, Auchincloss’s comments on Trump’s inauguration shed light on the importance of political leadership and the need for elected officials to prioritize the well-being of all Americans. His words serve as a reminder of the values that should guide our nation’s leaders as they work to bring our country together and move forward in a positive direction.

  • See which Mass. lawmakers will attend Trump’s inauguration

This year, Inauguration falls on a a federal holiday: Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Here’s the list of who is attending, and what, if any, comments they made about their decision.

Senator Ed Markey: Will instead be attending the Martin Luther King Jr. breakfast and celebrating King’s legacy, according to a spokesperson.

Bourne Representative Bill Keating: “I attended President Trump’s first inauguration, and I respect that he won the 2024 election. However, I cannot condone his Inauguration Day promise to pardon those who committed crimes at the Capitol on January 6, 2021. My decision to not attend the inauguration is out of respect for the men and women of the Capitol Police who were attacked at the very site of the inauguration itself while protecting Members of Congress and the peaceful transfer of power.”

Boston Representative Ayanna Pressley: “I plan to spend the weekend of Martin Luther King Jr. Day in my district at community events that feed our collective soul and re-commit us to building a future rooted in love. As we prepare to mitigate the most harmful and hateful policy decisions that will come from the Trump White House, I will be in the Massachusetts 7th to help organize and mobilize our collective power that honors Dr. King’s vision of justice and equity for everyone who calls Massachusetts and America home.”

    Senator Elizabeth Warren

Newton Representative Jake Auchincloss: “Yes I do [plan to attend], as a mark of respect for the great American tradition of the peaceful transfer of power,” Auchincloss recently told CNN. “The largest city in my district, Fall River, voted for Donald Trump. And I owe those constituents representation at that monumental event.”

  • Stock markets move higher after Trump inauguration

Stock markets in the Asia-Pacific region have moved higher after President Donald Trump outlined a pro-business agenda for his second term in the White House and stopped short of imposing new trade tariffs on his first day in office.

During his inaugural address, Trump pledged to bring in a new “golden age” for America.

He has promised an ambitious agenda – including trade reforms, lower taxes and cuts to government regulations – which has the potential to boost company profits.

But some economists have warned that the measures may also raise inflation, which in turn could force the Federal Reserve to increase interest rates.

In morning trade, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index was about 0.4% higher, South Korea’s Kospi was up 0.6% and stocks on Australia’s ASX 200 rose by around 1%.

Meanwhile, the dollar was lower against some other major currencies, including the pound and the euro.

US markets were closed on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr Day holiday.

Trump has not yet enacted any new tariffs but said on Monday that he is considering imposing 25% import taxes on Mexico and Canada on 1 February.

During the election campaign, Trump also pledged tariffs of 10% on all imports into the US and said he would hit China with a 60% import tax.

He has said tariffs will make Americans richer, although critics say the costs are likely to be passed on to consumers.

The President has also said he would create an “External Revenue Service” to collect all tariffs, duties and revenues from foreign sources.

As President Donald Trump was inaugurated on January 20, 2021, stock markets around the world responded positively to the new administration. The optimism surrounding Trump’s promises of economic stimulus and tax cuts caused major indices to move higher.

In the United States, the Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, and Nasdaq all saw gains as investors anticipated pro-business policies from the new president. The Dow reached a new record high, breaking the 20,000 mark for the first time in history.

Global markets also saw a boost, with European and Asian stocks rallying in response to Trump’s inauguration. Investors were hopeful that the new administration would lead to increased economic growth and corporate profits.

While there is still uncertainty surrounding Trump’s policies and their potential impact on the economy, the initial reaction from the markets was positive. Investors will be closely watching for any developments in the coming months as the new administration begins to implement its agenda.

  • Albertville band will no longer play at inauguration: ‘We are disappointed’

The Albertville High School band will no longer perform at the presidential inauguration on Monday.

According to Albertville City Schools Superintendent Bart Reeves, all the high school bands who were invited to the inauguration parade were told Friday evening that they would no longer be able to perform because the ceremony was moved indoors.

President-elect Donald Trump said Friday that he would move the inauguration to inside the Capitol Rotunda because of expected freezing temperatures.

“As you can imagine, we are disappointed by this decision, especially in receiving it just a day before our departure,” Reeves said in a statement Friday evening.

Reeves, however, said that the band would still make the trip to Washington, D.C. and are “actively exploring other venues” where they can perform.

“We want to showcase the exceptional talents of the Aggie Band, honor their dedication and ensure they receive the audience they so richly deserve,” Reeves added.

Gov. Kay Ivey gave a hand-written recommendation for the band to play at the inauguration, adding in an X post that she had “followed the Albertville High School Band’s journey for years now.”

The band director, Taylor Cash, announced earlier this month that the 350-member Aggie Band was selected to play at the parade.

At the time, Cash said they’d hold six rehearsals in preparation for the big event. It would have been the first time the school’s band was selected to perform at the inauguration.

“We are thrilled for our students to get this chance of a lifetime to perform in our Nation’s Capital. This will be the first time for the Aggie Band to perform for an Inauguration, so any time we can have a ‘first’ for our students and the legacy of our band program, it is a huge honor. We are really excited to put these students on television in front of millions of people from around the world. We’ll hope you tune in and wish us luck on this once in a lifetime opportunity,” Cash said.

Superintendent Reeves said he will keep the band and community informed as plans for their trip to DC develop.

“We are hopeful that, despite this setback, our students will have a memorable and rewarding experience in our nation’s capital,” he said.

Unfortunately, we have received news that the Albertville band will no longer be performing at the upcoming inauguration. The band members have expressed their disappointment at this decision, stating that they were looking forward to representing their community and showcasing their musical talents on such a prestigious platform.

Despite the setback, the band remains grateful for the opportunity to have been considered for this honor and is determined to continue sharing their music with the world. They are incredibly proud of all the hard work and dedication they have put into preparing for this event and are hopeful that they will have future opportunities to perform on a similar stage.

We stand in solidarity with the Albertville band and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors. Let’s continue to support and uplift local musicians who work tirelessly to bring joy and entertainment to our communities.

  • Mississippi HBCU Band Plans to March in Trump’s Inauguration

The Mississippi Valley State University band’s invitation to perform at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration has sparked an uproar for the historically black institution.

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies accepted the band’s application and invited the university’s Mean Green Fighting Machine to participate in the 60th Presidential Inauguration Parade on January 20 in Washington, D.C.

Mississippi Valley State University, located in Itta Bena, Miss., announced the invitation via a news release on December 26, 2024, and began soliciting donations immediately. By January 17, a GoFundMe page had raised more than $300,000. The announcement lists the total cost of the trip at $350,000, including travel, accommodations, meals, and equipment.

Mississippi Valley State University National Alumni Association President Jerry D. Redmond, Jr. said the university held a private town hall meeting with the band director Dr. Miguel Bonds, the Alumni Association and band students.

Redmond said that although the alumni association was unaware of the band’s application to participate in the parade, it backs the students.

“It was a situation where we want to support the students and the opportunity to participate in that national stage,” Redmond told the Mississippi Free Press on Jan 13.

Bonds took over the program in 2023. The New Orleans native was the band director for Talladega College in Alabama, an HBCU that also prompted controversy when it participated in Trump’s 2017 inaugural parade. Redmond said Bonds told those in the town hall meeting that he applies each time an inaugural parade is set to take place.

“He did disclose that he applies every year that a president’s inauguration is going to take place, regardless of who the candidates are, because it’s one of the highest honors for a band director—to participate in the presidential inauguration,” Redmond said.

The inaugural parade usually spans a 1.5-mile route along Pennsylvania Avenue from the U.S. Capitol to the White House. It lasts approximately three hours and is televised on most major news outlets. This year, however, a forecast of intense cold weather in Washington, D.C. on inauguration day has forced alterations to the parade route. Trump plans to hold a modified inaugural parade inside Washington’s Capital One Arena. The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies will also move the swearing-in ceremony indoors to the U.S. Capitol rotunda as temperatures are predicted to be around 22 degrees Fahrenheit at noon.

“This is not just a moment of pride for our university but for the entire state of Mississippi,” said MVSU President Dr. Jerryl Briggs said in the university’s announcement. “It is an opportunity to showcase our legacy, celebrate our culture, and invest in the future leaders of our community. This participation allows students to engage in the peaceful transition of power and gain global exposure while celebrating the university’s 75th anniversary.”

The transfer of power was less peaceful four years ago, however, when Trump’s lies claiming the 2020 election was stolen sparked a violent attack on the U.S. Capitol involving hundreds of his supporters.

MVSU officials declined to speak to the Mississippi Free Press because the reporter would not provide specific written questions in advance, per MFP’s ethical guidelines.

Although top campus officials support the band’s participation in the inauguration, touting it as a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” others say it conflicts with the mission and legacy of HBCUs. Some expressed shock that the university would accept the invitation from President Trump, who supports eliminating diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives and cutting federal funding for any school that he claims teaches “Critical Race Theory, gender ideology or other inappropriate racial, sexual or political content.”

In an open letter, Bishop Talbert Swan, II, a civil rights activist who is president of the Greater Springfield NAACP in Massachusetts, said the band’s participation in the parade contradicts its storied history.

“Mississippi Valley State University, in particular, carries a legacy shaped by students who, in 1964, organized a boycott demanding expanded Black history offerings in the curriculum and more representative library acquisitions,” Swan said. “This speaks to the unyielding commitment MVSU has — or has had — to honoring Black contributions and perspectives.”

“Yet the decision to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration stands in stark opposition to these values,” he continues. “His rhetoric and policies, past and present, include efforts to ban or severely limit the teaching of Black history in schools, penalize institutions that place an emphasis on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), and impose financial burdens on universities that insist on advancing these essential areas of education … . By extension, he dismisses and demeans the very educational ethos upon which HBCUs are built.”

Others questioned the band’s need to crowd-fund to make the trip when the band has other immediate needs. The GoFundMe says that in addition to financing the trip to Washington, D.C.,  the band is “seeking funds to acquire instruments, uniforms, provide scholarships, and get other essential resources for its continued development.”

“We are making improvements to the band hall to facilitate band practice,” the text says.

The inaugural parade website states that groups interested in participating in the parade must have applied by December 4. The application packet notes that “groups selected to participate in the parade will be responsible for all of their own expenses.”

The MVSU Alumni Association Facebook page has several posts soliciting financial support for the university choirs’ participation in the International Verona Choral Competition. However, there are no posts soliciting donations for the band or reposting its GoFundMe page.

“We’ve been very prayerful for them and we’ve given them full support,” Redmond said when asked how the alumni association was supporting the band’s efforts to travel to the inauguration. “The National Alumni Association supports all of the entities of the university. We support all of the areas. We are one of the primary supporters of which has to raise funding to support across the board and the band is one of the extensions and divisions of the University that we support. Now that is for overall support and not necessarily specific support. The choir, we did have to support specifically for (their) venture to happen. So the choir did get major support from the Alumni Association for the trip to Italy to be a success for them.”

Gov. Tate Reeves asked Mississippians to support the band’s efforts in a Jan 6 post on X.

“Looking forward to seeing @MVSUDEVILS’ Mean Green Marching Machine represent our state in @realDonaldTrump’s inaugural parade! You can help support these incredible students for this exciting opportunity,” Reeves posted along with the band’s GoFundMe link.

During his first term, Trump signed the FUTURE Act, which “made permanent a commitment of $255 million in annual funding for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.” However, many worry about the fate of these universities during the second Trump presidency.

The Heritage Foundation’s Project 2025 plan involves reducing federal oversight for public schools and universities which could lead to cuts in government funding from the U.S. Department of Education. Many HBCUs rely heavily on this funding for scholarships, operations, facilities and academic programs.

HBCU bands have a long history of performing at inaugural events. Mississippi Valley State University’s band appeared in President Richard Nixon’s 1969 inauguration parade. Since then, Florida A&M’s Marching 100 performed during Ronald Reagan’s 1981 inauguration, Howard University’s Showtime Marching Band appeared during George H.W. Bush’s 1989 inauguration, and his son, George W. Bush, had HBCU bands for both of his inauguration ceremonies.

Mississippi Valley State band was also the first HBCU band to march in the Rose Bowl parade in 1965.

The Mississippi HBCU Band, known for their captivating performances and high-energy routines, has announced their plans to march in President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration parade on January 20th.

This historic decision has sparked both excitement and controversy within the HBCU community, as some believe that participating in the inauguration could be seen as endorsing Trump’s divisive policies and rhetoric.

However, the band’s director, Dr. James Johnson, defended their decision, stating that it is an opportunity to showcase the talents and traditions of HBCUs on a national stage.

“We see this as a chance to celebrate our heritage and culture, and to represent our university and community with pride,” Dr. Johnson said.

The Mississippi HBCU Band is known for their vibrant performances and dedication to their craft, and their participation in the inauguration is sure to be a memorable and impactful event.

Stay tuned for updates on their performance at Trump’s inauguration parade!

  • Smyrna high school band to perform at inauguration parade in D.C. after surprise donation

A local high school band will be performing at the Inauguration Day Parade in Washington D.C., thanks to a generous final donation.

Stewarts Creek High School’s marching band in Smyrna was selected to represent Tennessee in the 60th Inaugural Presidential Parade of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance on January 20 in D.C. The only snag was each selected high school is expected to cover the cost of the trip. In their case, for all 120 band members and 40 adult staff members and chaperones.

Stewarts Creek was able to raise most of the amount needed for the entire band to travel to the inauguration but was short $40,000.

On Thursday, Tractor Supply surprised the band with the final $40,000 needed to reach their $130,000 goal.

See their reaction and celebration below on our YouTube channel:

  • Who is in the Inauguration Day parade? Full schedule and lineup – NBC Chicago

Inauguration Day will be filled with ceremonies and events, among them, the traditional Presidential Parade.

The parade is set to feature nearly 7,500 participants from 23 states, according to the Trump Vance Inaugural Committee.

“Inaugural parades are a long-lived tradition — dating back to President Washington’s first election, when impromptu crowds of supporters followed and cheered behind him as he traveled from Mount Vernon to New York City,” the committee said in a release. “Presidents Adams and Jefferson also had spontaneous parades, which continued until the inauguration of President James Madison in 1809, when they became an official part of the event.”

Playing a prominent role in this year’s events will be Butler County first responders, who will honor the life of former fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was shot and killed during the attempted assassination of President-elect Donald Trump in July.

“What we did together at the Butler Farm Show Grounds as first responders, police and pre-hospital emergency teams on that terrible day in July is what we are trained to do in Butler County every day: protect and save lives,” the Butler County First Responders group said in a statement. “We are forever changed by the devastating loss of our fellow first responder Corey Comperatore. We hope all Americans will pause today to remember the bravery and sacrifice of their own first responders and police, the expertise of their 911 dispatchers, and the skill of their local hospital emergency and medical staff and emergency management agencies.”

  • LIVE: Trump to host inauguration parade at Capital One Arena

Donald Trump has been sworn in as the 47th President of the United States.  Follow the coverage LIVE on FOX 5.

Trump to host parade at Capital One Arena

The Presidential Parade has been relocated to inside Capital One Arena, where tens of thousands of supporters gathered earlier this morning for live public viewing of his inauguration ceremony.

“We will open Capital One Arena on Monday for LIVE viewing of this Historic event, and to host the Presidential Parade. I will join the crowd at Capital One, after my Swearing In,” Trump announced on Truth Social last week.

The parade is expected around 3:00 p.m. this afternoon.

The inauguration activities did get behind schedule throughout the morning, but no word on whether things will occur on schedule this afternoon.

    – Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th president, promising a “revolution of common sense” and taking charge as Republicans assume unified control of Washington.

    – Trump, who overcame impeachments, criminal indictments, and assassination attempts, will act swiftly with executive orders to clamp down on border crossings, increase fossil fuel development, and end diversity and inclusion programs.

    – Declaring a “crisis of trust,” Trump said his administration will reclaim sovereignty, restore safety, and rebalance the scales of justice.

    – Frigid weather moved Trump’s swearing-in indoors to the Capitol Rotunda, replacing the inaugural parade with an event at a downtown arena.

    – Vice President JD Vance was sworn in first, followed by Trump, who used both a family bible and the one used by President Abraham Lincoln.

    – Billionaires and tech titans, including Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Tim Cook, Sundar Pichai, and Elon Musk, mingled with Trump’s incoming team before the ceremony.

President Joe Biden pardons Dr. Anthony Fauci during final hours in office

In a final act of his presidency, Joe Biden has pardoned Dr. Anthony Fauci, retired Gen. Mark Milley, and members of the House committee that investigated the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Biden used his extraordinary powers to shield them from potential “revenge” by the incoming Trump administration.

The decision follows warnings from Donald Trump about an enemies list targeting those who opposed him politically or held him accountable for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election and his role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Trump has chosen Cabinet nominees who supported his election falsehoods and vowed to punish those involved in investigating him.
