  • Budget 2025 Stock Market Live Updates | Sensex falls 200 pts as Budget presentation ends; Nifty50 below 23,450; India VIX eases 10%

Share buybacks have long been a popular exit strategy for investors. Effective October 1, 2024, amendments under the Finance (No. 2) Act 2024 classify buyback proceeds as dividends, taxable as “income from other sources” for shareholders. Additionally, the acquisition cost is treated as a capital loss, which can be offset against other capital gains.

This creates an anomaly where shareholders may pay tax on amounts equivalent to their capital investment, without any actual income gain. While capital loss benefits are available, they may not always be useful. To address this, it is recommended that buyback proceeds equivalent to the capital returned be exempt from tax, with no corresponding capital loss be recorded.

  • Ind vs Eng – ‘It is not a like-for-like replacement’ – Buttler after India sub in Rana for Dube

There was scrutiny around India’s move to bring on Harshit Rana as a concussion substitute for Shivam Dube during the fourth T20I against England, with England captain Jos Buttler saying after the match that this did not fit the definition of a like-for-like replacement. The television commentators who were on air at the time of the substitution – Kevin Pietersen and Nick Knight – had also questioned the swap. Dube did not take the field in the chase, after taking two blows on the helmet on his way to 53 off 34 balls.

“It is not a like-for-like replacement. We don’t agree with that,” Buttler said after India completed a 15-run win. “Either Shivam Dube has put on about 25 mph with the ball or Harshit’s really improved his batting. It’s part of the game and we really should have gone on to win the match, but we disagree with the decision.”

Dube scored his half-century after walking in at 57 for 4 and stitched together a 87-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Hardik Pandya that allowed India to post 181 for 9. During his innings, Dube was twice hit on the helmet by a bouncer – first in the ninth over when he missed a pull off a Jofra Archer delivery that was measured at 146.8kph, and then on the penultimate ball of the innings off Jamie Overton’s 141.5kph bumper. It is not unusual for concussion symptoms to show up belatedly.

India had batting allrounder Ramandeep Singh on the bench, who might have better fit the definition of a like-for-like replacement for Dube. For a short while, Ramandeep came on as a substitute for Varun Chakravarthy.

“He [Rana] is not the like-to-like replacement for Shivam Dube,” Pietersen had said on air. “You ask anyone in the world, and they will say the same thing. Dube is not a genuine pacer, but Rana is.” Knight also echoed these thoughts.

Rana, who was playing his first T20I, was brought into the attack in the 12th over and he struck with his second ball. He got a shortish ball to skid on and take the outside edge of Liam Livingstone, who had looked to guide it through third. Rana bowled his full quota of overs and picked up three wickets. He also was at short third to catch out England captain Jos Buttler, who walked back fuming and had a few words with head coach Brendon McCullum, perhaps at the approval of Rana as the concussion substitute.

“When Dube came back, two overs into the chase, I was told [about being the concussion substitute],” Rana said after the match. “I have been preparing for a while, not just for this series. I have been waiting for this moment [his debut] to prove myself. When I got the chance, I did not think of the circumstances and just thought about delivering. I have experience of bowling at the death [for KKR in the IPL] and relied on that.”

In the recent India vs England series, there was a lot of buzz around the decision to sub in Harshal Patel for Shardul Thakur. Jos Buttler, the England wicketkeeper-batsman, shared his thoughts on the substitution, stating that it was not a like-for-like replacement.

Buttler emphasized that Rana is a different type of player compared to Dube, who was originally in the playing XI. He pointed out that Rana is more of a bowling all-rounder, while Dube is more of a batting all-rounder. Buttler noted that it was a strategic decision by the Indian team management to bring in Rana for Dube, based on the match conditions and team balance.

The England player acknowledged that such decisions are part and parcel of the game and that teams often have to make tough calls based on the situation. He also praised Rana for his performance in the match, highlighting his contribution to the team’s success.

Overall, Buttler’s comments shed light on the intricacies of team selection and the thought process behind making substitutions in cricket matches. It is clear that every player brings a unique skill set to the team, and it is up to the management to make the best possible decisions for the team’s success.

  • Gautam Gambhir Gets Blunt Warning After Fresh Injury Blow To India: “Body Wasn’t Ready…”

Aakash Chopra opened up on Nitish Kumar Reddy’s workload, following his injury.© BCCI

India all-rounder Nitesh Kumar Reddy will take no part in the remaining games of the T20I series against England after he was ruled out hours ahead of the second match in Chennai, owing to an injury. Reddy played in the series-opener in Kolkata earlier this week, but he did not get the chance to bowl or bat in the match. For the unversed, Reddy was also part of India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, playing all five Tests as the visitors lost the series 1-2.

Former India batter Aakash Chopra opened up on Reddy’s workload, saying that his body might not have been ready for the rigors of international cricket.

Nitish Kumar Reddy is injured. He has been ruled out of the entire series. You must be thinking, ‘What would’ve happened?’ I am wondering how this would have happened. When you start playing international cricket, the workload is different,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

Chopra also highlighted that Reddy played all five Tests against Australia. Hence, he possibly got injured due to the same.

“Workload and pressure go hand in hand. He played 5 Tests in Australia. He performed there. He was on the ground consistently. He batted and even bowled a little. It takes a toll. Believe it or not, he is a young kid. The body sometimes doesn’t last that long,” he added.

“Suddenly, you realise there is an injury. I think something has happened. Maybe the body wasn’t ready for this type of workload and pressure, and he broke down. Shivam Dube has been called into the squad in place of Nitish Kumar Reddy,” Chopra explained.

India lead England 2-0 in the series and could wrap up the rubber in Rajkot when they take the field for the 3rd T20I on Tuesday.

Gautam Gambhir Gets Blunt Warning After Fresh Injury Blow To India: “Body Wasn’t Ready…”

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has been dealt another injury blow, raising concerns about his fitness and readiness for competitive cricket. The left-handed batsman recently suffered a fresh injury setback, further complicating his comeback plans.

In response to Gambhir’s latest injury, experts have issued a blunt warning, stating that his body may not be ready for the rigors of professional cricket. The 40-year-old has been struggling with various fitness issues in recent years, and this latest setback has raised questions about his ability to make a successful return to the sport.

Gambhir, who has been vocal about his desire to play competitive cricket again, will need to address his fitness concerns if he hopes to revive his playing career. The road ahead may be challenging, but with the right approach and dedication, Gambhir could potentially overcome these obstacles and make a strong comeback.

As fans and experts alike wait to see how Gambhir will respond to this latest setback, one thing is clear: his body will need to be in top condition if he hopes to compete at the highest level once again. Only time will tell if the former cricketer can rise to the challenge and prove his critics wrong.

  • Shashi Tharoor responds to Donald Trump’s 100% tariff warning for India: ‘His threat seems a bit empty because…’

US President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs against BRICS nations if the group tried to move away from the dollar in international trade. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has since deemed it a seemingly ‘empty’ threat as there was no such plan in the works.

“I don’t think there is any particular plan whatsoever to do that. And therefore, the threat of the president seems a bit empty because it’s only if there is an actual proposal that comes up and that countries like India are taking forward seriously. I don’t see any support in the Indian government for such a proposal. So, until that happens, why should we worry,” he said.

Tharoor noted that there had been “some discussion” on the issue with localised examples — such as Rupee-Ruble trade with Russia or Rupee-Riyal trade with Iran. The Congress lawmaker also said that the dollar remained a “practical convenience” for most countries.

What is BRICS and does it want a new currency?

BRICS is an intergovernmental organisation comprising 10 countries including India. The other member nations are Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates. Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs against the grouping and warned against de-dollarisation.

Recent years have seen some of the member nations — in particular Russia and China — seeking an alternative to the US dollar or a new BRICS currency. India remains against the move with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar reiterating in December that there was no such proposal.

    What has Donald Trump said?

“The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is OVER. We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new BRICS Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty US Dollar or, they will face 100 per cent Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful US Economy. They can go find another sucker Nation,” Trump insisted in a social media post.

The strongly worded remarks were made through his Truth Social platform. He also assured that there was “no chance that BRICS will replace the US Dollar in International Trade”. Any country that tried such a move, he insisted, would soon find itself “saying hello to Tariffs, and goodbye to America!”

    (With inputs from agencies)

Shashi Tharoor responds to Donald Trump’s 100% tariff warning for India: ‘His threat seems a bit empty because…’

In a recent interview, Indian politician and author Shashi Tharoor weighed in on US President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 100% tariff on Indian exports. Tharoor, known for his eloquence and wit, did not hold back in his response.

“His threat seems a bit empty because, let’s face it, India is not a small player in the global economy,” Tharoor said. “We have a strong manufacturing base, a growing consumer market, and a burgeoning tech industry. Trump may think he can bully us with tariffs, but I think he underestimates India’s resilience and potential.”

Tharoor went on to highlight the long-standing trade relationship between the two countries, noting that India is one of the largest importers of US goods and services. He also pointed out the strategic importance of maintaining a positive relationship with India, particularly in light of rising tensions with China.

“Trump’s protectionist policies may have worked for him in the past, but I don’t think they will be as effective when it comes to dealing with India,” Tharoor added. “We are a sovereign nation with our own interests and priorities, and we will not be bullied into submission.”

In conclusion, Tharoor emphasized the need for diplomacy and dialogue in resolving trade disputes, rather than resorting to threats and ultimatums. “It’s time for both countries to come to the table and find a mutually beneficial solution,” he said. “After all, we are both democracies that value freedom and open markets. Let’s not let petty politics get in the way of progress.”

  • India vs England 4th T20I Live Score: England opt to bowl; Arshdeep, Rinku and Shivam in for India

India vs England 4th T20I Live Score: Leading 2-1 in the 5-match series, Suryakumar Yadav’s India take on Jos Buttler’s England in the fourth match at Gahunje Stadium as the hosts look to seal series.

India had an opportunity to take unassailable series lead in Rajkot but faltered in 172 chase.

Shami’s inclusion in the previous match forced the team to rest left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, as India opted for a spin-heavy attack featuring Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Varun Chakravarthy, and Ravi Bishnoi.

However, unlike the spin-friendly surface used for the October Test against New Zealand, the pitch for this game is expected to be more balanced. This could prompt India to bring back Arshdeep and Rinku, possibly at the expense of Sundar or Bishnoi and wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel.

Rinku, who missed the last two games due to lower back spasms, was fit and available for selection during India’s practice session on Thursday. England, meanwhile, chose to skip training.

A fascinating battle looms between India’s spin attack and England’s premier leg-spinner Adil Rashid.

Bishnoi, who has struggled in the series—conceding 95 runs in 12 overs for just one wicket—was particularly expensive in the last game, leaking two fours and five sixes. Given England’s aggressive approach, India will need a well-thought-out bowling strategy.

The surface is expected to offer some assistance to the bowlers, but Indian batters cannot afford to take England’s pace attack, led by Jofra Archer, lightly.

In the previous game, England successfully restricted India for 43 consecutive deliveries in the middle overs, a key factor in their victory. Coach Gautam Gambhir will likely address this issue as India look to avoid another batting collapse.

Hardik Pandya remains a crucial asset due to his all-round abilities, but questions linger over his strike rate when batting before the 10th over.

Skipper Suryakumar Yadav will also have to ensure better utilization of resources—Jurel was sent in too late in the last match, while Axar Patel was under-bowled, and Washington Sundar’s lone over proved costly.

England’s victory in Rajkot marked only India’s third defeat.

India will be taking on England in the 4th T20I of the series today, with England winning the toss and opting to bowl first.

In a surprising move, India has made some changes to their playing XI, with Arshdeep Singh, Rinku Singh, and Shivam Dube coming in for the match. The trio will be looking to make an impact and help India secure a victory in this crucial game.

Stay tuned for live updates and the latest score as India takes on England in what promises to be an exciting match! #INDvsENG #T20I #CricketLiveScore

At times it’s not going to work, and that’s fine. But we could easily be 2-1 up in the series if things had gone a little bit better for us at the back end of the second game.

    Preamble

Hello and welcome to episode four of Bazball Nights, England’s new white-ball spin-off. So far it’s been great fun, with episodes devoted to mystery spin, raw pace and tediously extended metaphors and canny left-arm seam.

England won superbly in Rajkot to keep the series alive, when their counter-intuitive decision to pick four genuinely quick bowlers paid off; another win today would set up a series decider at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. And even if they lose, the cricket will never, ever be dull.

    The match starts at 1.30pm

'Bit empty': Shashi Tharoor downplays Donald Trump’s tariff threats to Brics nations

NEW DELHI: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor dismissed US President Donald Trump‘s tariff threats against Brics nations, labeling them “a bit empty”, citing the absence of plans to introduce an alternative to the US dollar.
Tharoor described the dollar as a “practical convenience” for most nations, indicating that Brics has not made a substantial proposal to establish an alternative currency.
Addressing Trump’s tariff threats, Tharoor said, “I heard this comment by President Trump. But, the fact is there is no serious proposal for the Brics to come up with an alternative currency to the dollar. The dollar is a practical convenience for most countries in the world.”
“There may have been some discussion, and we certainly have in the past had some examples of Rupee-Rubel trade with Russia, Rupee-Riyal trade with Iran, and so on. So, that’s not impossible. An alternative international currency. I don’t think there is any particular plan whatsoever to do that. And therefore, the threats of the president seem a bit empty because it’s only if there is an actual proposal that comes up and that countries like India are taking it seriously. I don’t see any support in the Indian government for such a proposal. So, until that happens, why should we worry,” he added.

Tharoor’s comments come after Trump’s renewed warnings to Brics nations regarding potential currency alternatives.
Trump warned on Truth Social: “The idea that the BRICS Countries are trying to move away from the Dollar, while we stand by and watch, is over. We are going to require a commitment from these seemingly hostile Countries that they will neither create a new Brics Currency, nor back any other Currency to replace the mighty US Dollar or, they will face 100 per cent Tariffs, and should expect to say goodbye to selling into the wonderful US Economy. They can go find another sucker Nation. There is no chance that BRICS will replace the US Dollar in International Trade, or anywhere else, and any Country that tries should say hello to Tariffs, and goodbye to America!”
This statement reinforced Trump’s position on maintaining the dollar’s dominance in global trade, suggesting significant economic repercussions for nations seeking alternatives.
At the Oval Office signing ceremony, Trump declared, “As a Brics nation… they’ll have a 100 per cent tariff if they so much as even think about doing what they thought, and therefore they’ll give it up immediately.”
Responding to former President Biden’s comments, Trump asserted American dominance, stating: “It’s not even a threat. In fact, since I made that statement, Biden said, they have us over a barrel. I said, No, we have them over a barrel. And there’s no way they’re going to be able to do that.”
These warnings follow Trump’s previous statements before becoming the 47th President, threatening 100 per cent tariffs on Brics nations’ imports if they introduced a new currency.
During the 15th Brics Summit in 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin advocated for de-dollarisation, suggesting BRICS nations should increase national currency settlements and strengthen banking cooperation.
In June 2024, Brics foreign ministers convened in Russia’s Nizhny Novgorod, supporting increased use of local currencies in trade and financial transactions between member countries.

Shashi Tharoor, a prominent Indian politician and former diplomat, recently commented on US President Donald Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on Brics nations, including India. Tharoor downplayed the impact of these threats, stating that the Brics countries have faced similar challenges in the past and have the resilience to overcome them.

In a tweet, Tharoor wrote, “Brics nations have faced down tougher challenges than Trump’s tariff threats. We’ve been through worse and come out stronger. Let’s not overreact to his bluster.”

Tharoor’s comments come amidst growing concerns over the escalating trade tensions between the US and its trading partners, including India. Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose tariffs on imports from countries like India, China, and Brazil, in an effort to reduce the US trade deficit.

However, Tharoor believes that the Brics nations, which include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, have the economic strength and unity to weather these challenges. He urged his fellow leaders to remain calm and focused on finding solutions to the trade disputes.

While Trump’s tariff threats may have sparked fears of a trade war, Tharoor’s reassuring words suggest that the Brics nations are well-equipped to handle whatever comes their way. As the world watches and waits to see how this situation unfolds, it seems that Tharoor’s message of resilience and strength is a timely reminder for all.
