  • India v England: Jamie Smith retained for third T20 in Chennai

Batter Jamie Smith has been retained in an unchanged England team for the third T20 against India in Rajkot on Tuesday.

Smith made 22 from 12 balls on his T20 international debut in Saturday’s two-wicket defeat in the second match of the series.

He had come into the England side for all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who missed out through illness but was well enough to train on Monday.

England are 2-0 down in the five-match series.

“You’ve got to believe, haven’t you?” said England fast bowler Mark Wood.

“It’s no good sitting there saying ‘that’s it’. There are three games to play, three chances of a win.”

Wood, 35, has played in both matches of the series so far after being sidelined since August with a stress fracture in his elbow.

In the 5.5 overs he has bowled across the series, Wood has taken one wicket and leaked runs at an economy of 8.83 per over.

“I’ve felt a little bit ‘hitty-missy’,” he said. “I’ve done a couple of good things, it’s great that my pace is up there, but maybe my accuracy at time hasn’t been quite where I wanted it.

“When I haven’t played since August, that’s pretty much expected. Hopefully the more I play, the better I get.”

England team: Ben Duckett, Phil Salt (wicketkeeper), Jos Buttler (captain), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

In a surprising move, Jamie Smith has been retained for the third T20 match between India and England in Chennai. The young wicketkeeper-batsman has impressed with his performance in the previous matches, earning him a spot in the playing XI once again.

Smith’s inclusion has raised a few eyebrows, especially with the experienced Jos Buttler waiting in the wings. However, the team management seems keen on giving the youngster more opportunities to showcase his talent on the international stage.

It will be interesting to see how Smith performs in the crucial third T20 match, as both teams look to gain the upper hand in the series. Will he be able to make a significant impact and help England secure a win, or will the pressure of the big stage get to him?

Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting clash between India and England in Chennai. #IndiaVsEngland #T20 #JamieSmith

  • India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Mohammed Shami returns, Arshdeep ‘rested’ as IND win toss and bowl first

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: India have experienced two very different kinds of victories in their T20I series against England thus far and one more win today would confirm yet another series win at home for them

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: India have experienced two very different kinds of victories in their T20I series against England thus far and one more win today would confirm yet another series win at home for them

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Mohammed Shami is returning to international cricket for the first time since the 2023 World Cup final with India captain Suryakumar Yadav saying that his replacing Arshdeep Singh, who has been rested for the third T20I against England in Rajkot. India have won the toss and are bowling first. …Read More

India have experienced two very different kinds of victories in their T20I series against England thus far and one more win today would confirm yet another series win at home for them. It was almost a walk in the park for them at the Eden Gardens where they won the first T20I by seven wickets with a whopping 43 balls to spare. In the second, though, it took a virtuoso knock from Tilak Varma to take them over the line with two wickets and four balls to spare.

England’s ploy of throwing the kitchen sink at the Indian bowlers, particularly the spinners, almost worked at the Chepauk in the second T20I. The fact remains that they would have probably stuck to that tactic today even if it hadn’t worked at all in Chennai. Such is the Bazball way. They have their task cut out for them, though – in India they are facing a side who have won 15 of the 17 T20Is they have played since they won the 2024 T20 World Cup. India are also unbeaten in their last 17 T20I series at home, with their last defeat being a 2-0 loss to Australia in February 2019.

Moreover, India seemed to have changed their approach to T20 cricket during this period. Gone are the days of top order anchors and middle-order sloggers, they all slog now. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have not have too many big opening partnerships but that is largely because they have tried to heave the bowlers out of the ground as often as possible in the powerplay. Tilak has been a revelation at No.3.

Strangely enough, the one player on whom some doubt seems to have crept up since the T20 World Cup is captain Suryakumar Yadav, although the alarm bells are not even visible in the horizon. Suryakumar has scored 12 runs at a strike rate of 120 in this series thus far. Since the T20 World Cup, he has managed only two fifties and scored 242 runs at an average of 23.

In the bowling lineup, it seems pretty certain that Mohammed Shami won’t be playing this time around either. Batting coach Sitanshu Kotak said that the fitness didn’t play a role in the decision to keep out Shami, who has been on the sidelines since the final of the 2023 World Cup. With Arshdeep Singh’s short-pitched deliveries proving to be too much for Phil Salt to handle, it wouldn’t really make sense to drop him halfway through the series. Moreover, Arshdeep has proven himself to be undroppable regardless of the situation as he sits within touching distance of becoming the first Indian to take 100 wickets in T20Is.

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Shami marking his runup

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Don’t be too surprised by this though. Shami had done that in Kolkata and Chennai as well. We will know soon if he is playing or not with Suryakumar Yadav and Jos Buttler standing in readiness for the toss.

    Jan 28, 2025 6:17 PM IST

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: What to expect in Rajkot

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: The average first innings total in the five T20Is played here is 189. As stated earlier, India scored 228 for 5 against Sri Lanka the last time they played in Rajkot. There were also plenty of 170-plus totals in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy matches held here in November-December. The pitch itself looked rather pale without much grass. All these suggest a high-scoring encounter is on the cards. The chasing sides have had a better success rate in T20 games played in Rajkot.

    Jan 28, 2025 6:13 PM IST

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: A challenging start for Brendon McCullum

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: It hasn’t been a very promising start to life as England’s white-ball head coach for Brendon McCullum. First of all, he has taken over a side that underperformed in the 2024 T20 World Cup and they are now looking quite far away from looking good enough to get a win in India.

    Jan 28, 2025 6:03 PM IST

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: A star turn for Brydon Carse

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: If England had won the second T20I Brydon Carse would’ve been the player of the match hands down. He bailed England out of being all out for a low score by smashing 31 in 17 balls and then he dismantled the Indian middle order, recording figures of 3/29.

    Jan 28, 2025 5:57 PM IST

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Sanju Samson puts in the hard yards

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Sanju Samson arrived at the ground much earlier yesterday than the rest of his teammates and was seen batting against plastic balls on a cement pitch. He later batted on the side nets and appeared rather comfortable playing short-pitched bowling as he geared up the play against the likes of Archer, Wood and Carse.

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Jofra Archer blows hot and cold

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Jofra Archer was pretty much the only bowler who could stop the Indian batters from scoring at will in the first T20I. The story couldn’t be more different in the second. He recorded figures of 2/21 in the first T20I, with Abhishek Sharma going berzerk only after Archer bowled all four of hs overs on the trot. The second T20I, however, marked the first time Archer conceded more than 50 runs in a T20I match. He ended up with figures of 1/60.

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: England’s spin woes

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: They threw the kitchen sink on Indian spinners in the second T20I and that only almost got them to a win. Not to a win itself. Since the start of 2024, England have gone for 6/58 in 11 overs Providence, 2024), 5/67 in 12 overs (Kolkata, 2025) and 6/118 in 14 overs (Chennai, 2025) against Indian spinners.

    Jan 28, 2025 5:18 PM IST

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Could Dhruv Jurel sit out?

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Dhruv Jurel was one of two changes that India made for the second T20I after the injuries to Nitish Reddy and Rinku Singh. India had called in Ramandeep Singh and Shivam Dube as replacements to the squad and it is quite likely that they will slot in the latter. For that, through, Jurel is pretty much the only player wh seems to be replacable in the eleven.

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Livingstone slips up to spinners

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Liam Livingstone is known to play spin well but has looked largely at sea in the two matches thus far this series. He fell to a wrong ‘un from Chakravarthy in Kolkata and then was done by the lift Axar got in Chennai

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Big scores to expected today…

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Of the 12 Indian venues that have hosted at least five T20Is till date, only Wankhede (9.34) and Mohali (9.03) have had a better run-rate than Rajkot (8.91).

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: India’s middle-over aggression

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Since the end of the 2024 T20 World Cup what has set India apart from England is their strike rate in the middle overs. India have gone at 10.07 in this phase of matches while England have gone at 8.90. However, both sides are pretty neck and neck when it comes to powerplay strike rates, India have clocked 9.34 while England have gone at 9.35.

    Jan 28, 2025 4:23 PM IST

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: India’s strength in Rajkot

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: India have been dominant most times that they have played a T20I in Rajkot. The first T20I played here was against Australia in October 2013 and India won that by six wickets. India then lost the second match to be played here to New Zealand by 40 runs in November 2017. Since then, they beat Bangladesh by eight wickets in November 2019, South Africa by 82 runs in June 2022 and Sri Lanka by 91 runs in January 2023.

    Jan 28, 2025 4:05 PM IST

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Suryakumar Yadav’s blitz in the last Rajkot T20I

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Suryakumar can look at what he did on this ground the last time a T20I was played here if he needs some reminding of what he can do on his day. India won the toss and batted first. Suryakumar came in at No.3 and put up a stand of 111 runs off just 53 balls with Shubman Gill. He did most of the scoring in that partnership and later put an unbeaten stand of 39 runs with Axar Patel. SKY finished not out on 112 off 51 balls and led India to a score of 228/5. Arshdeep Singh, Umran Malik, Yuzvendra Chahal and captain Hardik Pandya then packed up the Sri Lankans for just 137 runs and India won by 91 runs.

    Jan 28, 2025 3:56 PM IST

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Suryakumar Yadav due a big score

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Murmurs of concerns over Suryakumar Yadav’s form is not unfounded. He relinquished the No.3 spot to Tilak Varma in South Africa and that seems to have worked wonders for the latter. However, Suryakumar himself managed scores of 21, 4 and 1 in the three innings there, and now has 0 and 12 in two games in this series.

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Arshdeep Singh two wickets away from history

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Arshdeep Singh has taken three wickets thus far in this series, two of which came in the first T20I and took him past Yuzvendra Chahal as India’s highest wicket-taker in the format. His career tally now stands at 98 and if he gets to 100 today, he will become the first Indian to do so and the fastest pacer to get to the milestone, beating the record set by Haris Rauf.

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: India’s two contrasting victories

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: England were hardly able to make anything of themselves in the first T20I but they did more than that in the second. England were all out for 132 despite captain Jos Buttler scoring 68 in 44 balls in the first T20I and India raced to that target seven wickets and just over seven overs to spare. In the second, though, Buttler scored only 45 in 30 balls, but England managed to reach 165/9 thanks to a rear guard act led by Brydon Carse. He then shone with the ball but Tilak Varma stood strong to lead India over the line in a game that turned out to be a thriller.

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Hello and welcome!

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: This series has gone from being billed as the one in which Mohammed Shami makes his comeback to the one in which Mohammed Shami is highly unlikely to make a comeback. And that is because, quite frankly, there seems to be no place for him at the moment. Arshdeep Singh is Mr.Dependable, as the spinners led by Varun Chakravarthy. It is highly unlikely that Shami will play today with gunning for a series win and most probably wanting to maintain the balance that has worked for them thus far.

India vs England 3rd T20I LIVE SCORE: Mohammed Shami returns, Arshdeep ‘rested’ as IND win toss and bowl first

In the crucial third T20I between India and England, Mohammed Shami makes his return to the playing XI, while Arshdeep Singh has been ‘rested’.

After winning the toss, India captain Virat Kohli decides to bowl first, hoping to restrict the strong England batting lineup and chase down the target later.

“Good afternoon,” says John Starbuck. “Ever get the feeling England are drinking in the Last Chance Saloon? Let’s hope there’s a bar brawl on the way as we could do with the energy.”

    Sambucas all round.

    Team news

The great Mohammed Shami returns to international cricket for the first time since the 50-over World Cup final in November 2023. Arshdeep Singh is rested.

England have picked the same XI but Jamie Smith has a tight calf so he’ll keep wicket instead of Phil Salt.

England Salt, Duckett, Buttler (c), Brook, Livingstone, Smith (wk), Overton, Carse, Archer, Rashid, Wood.

India win the toss and bowl

That’s three in a row for Suryakumar Yadav, and bad news for England. Both captains think it looks like the best wicket of the series so far.

Mark Wood on his series so far

It’s great that my pace has been up there and I feel it’s coming out my hand well but the accuracy at times hasn’t been quite where I wanted it. But when I haven’t played since August, it’s pretty much expected – I’ve played two games since then. Hopefully the more I play, the better I get leading into the 50-over stuff and the Champions Trophy.

    Preamble

Cold water is so damn hot right now. You can’t open a browser without seeing a feature on the abundant health benefits of freezing showers, ice baths and other forms of cold water immersion therapy. It can reduce inflammation, strengthen your immune system, improve blood flow and give you a newfound respect for lukewarm showers.

England may come to view this white-ball tour of India in a similar way. It’s been extremely uncomfortable so far, and one or two of their players would probably turn the shower off if they could. But in one sense it’s a great way to start the Bazball Nights era. India away is as tough as it gets; England should be a healthier team for the experience. They might even strengthen their immune system against quality spin bowling.

That’s the positive take. The negative is that they’ll be facing a whitewash if they lose today, that mystery spin is their Kryptonite in perpetuity, that Eoin Morgan’s team were outliers rather than trailblazers and that AI is going to kill us all by the year 2030.

England came very close to winning the second T20 international, thanks in part to an amazing individual performance from Brydon Carse, so they still have plenty of reasons to be cheerful. Winning the toss wouldn’t do any harm either.

The match begins at 1.30pm GMT.

  • Planet Parade 2025 to be best visible today: When and how to watch? | Latest News India

In a rare celestial event, six planets – Venur, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus will align in a formation called the ‘planet parade’. The phenomenon will be best visible on Saturday evening, January 25.

According to experts, the planets will not be perfectly aligned in a straight line but are closely grouped on one side of the sun. (NASA)

Such astronomical phenomena are not uncommon. However, the special thing about this particular line up is the number of planets that will align together to make the formation.

The best time to watch the majestic phenomenon is around 45 minutes post sunset. One of the best parts about this celestial formation is that four planets – Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will be visible to the naked eye after the sun sets. However, to view Uranus and Neptune, a telescope will be required.

According to experts, the planets will not be perfectly aligned in a straight line but are closely grouped on one side of the sun.

    When and where to watch

In India, the Bengaluru people are in great luck. Vijay Kapoor of the Bangalore Astronomy Club notes that binoculars will allow observers to catch a glimpse of Jupiter’s moons, while Uranus and Neptune will require a telescope for clearer viewing. By March 8, Mercury will join the alignment, making it even more exciting for those interested in exploring the night sky, said a Times of India report.

To witness the phenomenon in full glory, locations with minimal light pollution are preferable, say the experts. Among excellent vantage points are Nandi Hills, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu and clear skies are a crucial part for a nice viewing of the alignment, the TOI report added.

In Gurugram, Jyoti Raghavan Khanduja, founder of Forest Spirit Learning, is organising a session in Shikohpur, Gurugram. She said, “It’s our first astronomy event, and the response from across Delhi-NCR has been great. People of all ages are booking the session to experience one-of-a-kind sky-gazing…We all need to gaze at the night sky just once. It makes us realise how small we are in nature’s scheme of things.”

In Pune and Mumbai, Piyush Arun, Strategic & Creative Head, YanamOffbeat, a trip and trek company is organising an event to view the alignment. He says, “We have one batch each on January 25 and 26 at the peak time, 8:30 pm. Our session is more than stargazing. It’s a live exploration of stars, planets and other celestial bodies.” He explains, “These sessions typically feature deep-space telescopes in locations free from light pollution. The events also include extras like meditation, Q&A with astronomers, and lakeside camping.”

Some apps such as Star Walk, Star Tracker, and Sky Map can also be used as guides to witness the planet parade.

The Planet Parade 2025 is set to be one of the most spectacular celestial events of the year, with all five visible planets lining up in the night sky. This rare alignment will provide skywatchers with a stunning display of Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and Mercury all in a row.

To catch the best view of the Planet Parade 2025, make sure to look towards the western horizon just after sunset. The planets will be visible in the evening sky from mid-March to early April, with each planet appearing at different times throughout the night.

Here’s a breakdown of when each planet will be best visible during the Planet Parade 2025:

    – Venus: Look for Venus shining brightly in the western sky just after sunset. It will be the first planet to appear in the lineup.

    – Jupiter: Jupiter will be next to appear, following Venus in the night sky. Look for the largest planet in our solar system shining brightly near the constellation Aquarius.

    – Saturn: Saturn will be visible in the southern sky, following Jupiter in the lineup. Look for the iconic rings of Saturn as it shines brightly in the night sky.

    – Mars: Mars will be the fourth planet to appear in the Planet Parade, rising in the eastern sky later in the evening. Look for the red planet near the constellation Taurus.

    – Mercury: Mercury will be the final planet to appear in the lineup, rising in the eastern sky just before sunrise. Look for the smallest planet in our solar system near the constellation Pisces.

Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to witness all five visible planets in the night sky during the Planet Parade 2025. Grab your telescope or binoculars and head outside to catch this spectacular celestial event!

  • India v England: Bryson Carse in for Gus Atkinson for second T20

England are looking to get back into the series after being soundly beaten in Kolkata in Brendon McCullum’s first match as head coach of the white-ball teams.

Bowled out for 132, England’s historical weakness against spin was again exposed, as India’s trio of Varun Chakravarthy, Axar Patel and Ravi Bishnoi shared a combined 5-67 from 12 overs.

Batter and vice-captain Harry Brook said England are “pretty chilled” about the outcome of the opener but did say the smog in Kolkata made it hard to read the home bowlers.

“With the smog the other night, it was a lot harder to pick,” said Brook. “Hopefully the air is a bit clearer here and we can see the ball a bit easier.

“Facing spin in T20 cricket is probably the hardest thing in the game, especially because I always get out trying to absolutely smack it,” he said.

“Maybe I’ve got to rein in a little bit, but we’ll see.”

In a surprising lineup change, Bryson Carse has been named as a replacement for Gus Atkinson in the upcoming second T20 match between India and England.

Carse, known for his pace and accuracy, will be making his debut for the England team in this crucial match. His inclusion in the squad brings a fresh dynamic to the bowling attack and adds depth to the team’s options.

On the other hand, Atkinson’s omission from the playing XI comes as a surprise to many fans and pundits. The young bowler showed promise in the first T20 match but will now have to wait for his next opportunity to prove his worth.

It will be interesting to see how Carse performs in his debut match and whether he can make an impact against the formidable Indian batting lineup. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting clash between India and England! #INDvENG #T20Cricket

  • India v England: second men’s T20 international – live | Over by over reports

    Key events

We have our first email, from an old friend. “It’s OK for Ravi Shastri to say a nice pleasant evening in Chennai,” says Krish Krishnamoorthy. “They declare it is winter there when the temp is 26 (or when the coconut oil freezes in the early morning hours), but it is 26 at 7 in the evening.” Sounds pretty good from where I sit, on a cold winter’s day in London. And the coconut oil is a great touch.

    You have been warned.

India playing 4 spinners in this match; so England could face up to 16 overs of it tonight. Washington Sundar could open the bowling #INDvsENG

    — Richard Gibson (@richardgibsonDM) January 25, 2025

    Teams: two changes apiece

England make two changes – not just Carse for Atkinson, but Jamie Smith for Bethell, who is unwell. For Smith, this is a T20 international debut. He has produced some fabulous clean hitting in his first few Tests, but only after taking his time to play himself in.

India make two changes too. They leave out two players who neither batted nor bowled in the first game, Rinku Singh (now injured) and Nitish Kumar Reddy. In come Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar, so SKY has yet another frontline spinner in his armoury.

    England lose the toss again

“A nice pleasant evening here in Chennai,” says Ravi Shastri. Not for Jos Buttler, who calls wrong for the second time out of two. Suryakumar Yadav has no hesitation making England bat first again. “I would have loved to do the same,” says Buttler, sounding as affable as ever. “Same game plan, just do it better.”

    Preamble

Afternoon everyone and welcome to the second match in this T20 series. The question is: will it be the second mismatch? On Wednesday, at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Brendon McCullum’s new England capitulated to SKY’s new India, losing with seven overs to spare.

A complete unknown outside India, Varun Chakravarthy, ripped through England’s middle order with his googlies. Another less than household name, Abhishek Sharma, then helped himself to 79 off 34 balls with eight sixes. McCullum’s big idea – picking a battery of pacemen – backfired as Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood and Jamie Overton bowled 35 balls and took none for 73. Jofra Archer and Jos Buttler were both excellent, but we knew that already. Harry Brook, the new vice-captain, said afterwards that it was the smog wot won it.

Today in Chennai the air should be clearer. Whether the England batters’ minds are, we shall see. Most England teams that go to India end up getting tormented by the spinners. It’s just that usually they win a match first.

England have said that Brydon Carse will come in for the red-faced Atkinson but there’s a doubt about Jacob Bethell, who may give way to Jamie Smith. Play starts at 1.30pm GMT and I’ll be back just after 1 with the toss and teams.

For England supporters, there’s yet another embarrassment in Australia to ponder. But at least you can enjoy Tanya Aldred’s turn of phrase.
