  • Perplexity CEO Arvind Srinivas: Nandan Nilekani ‘is wrong about pushing India to ignore model training skills’

FILE PHOTO: Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas has responded to Nandan Nilekani’s comments around India not needing to build its own models, saying he disagreed with the Infosys co-founder.

Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas said that Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani’s comment on India not needing to build its own AI models “is wrong.” Though Mr. Srinivas acknowledged Mr. Nilekani’s contributions to India’s tech industry, he noted that companies can train their own AI models while also building on top of existing models.

“To be clear: Nandan Nilekani is awesome, and he’s done far more for India than any of us can imagine through Infosys, UPI, etc. But he’s wrong on pushing Indians to ignore model training skills and just focus on building on top of existing models. Essential to do both,” Mr. Srinivas tweeted.

In October, Mr. Nilekani advised Indian AI startups to stay away from building large language models (LLMs) and make practical AI applications instead.

“Our goal should not be to build one more LLM. Let the big boys in the (Silicon) Valley do it, spending billions of dollars. We will use it to create synthetic data, build small language models quickly, and train them using appropriate data,” Mr. Nilekani said at the Meta AI Summit.

Mr. Nilekani said the focus must be on building infrastructure that can collect data to deploy and scale apps in a frugal manner. “Let other people build LLMs, we will make sure it works for people” he stated.

Other industry leaders in the country have echoed similar ideas when it comes to building new AI models.

“I don’t think there’s going to be a huge incremental advantage in building your own LLMs since there are so many already available. If you go by the existing heritage of most Indian organisations, we are more of system integrators. If you take a similar approach here, we are better off,” told TCS CEO K. Krithivasan to The Hindu’s Businessline a week ago.

In a recent interview, Perplexity CEO Arvind Srinivas shared his thoughts on Nandan Nilekani’s suggestion to prioritize model deployment over model training skills in India’s tech industry. Srinivas argued that Nilekani is wrong in his approach, emphasizing the importance of developing strong model training skills.

According to Srinivas, model training is the foundation of any successful AI project. Without proper training, models will not be able to accurately analyze and interpret data, leading to unreliable results. He believes that focusing solely on model deployment without adequate training skills will ultimately hinder India’s progress in AI technology.

Srinivas also highlighted the potential impact on job opportunities in the tech sector. By neglecting model training skills, India may miss out on valuable opportunities for growth and innovation in AI development. He stressed the need for a balanced approach, where both model training and deployment skills are given equal importance.

In conclusion, Srinivas expressed his disagreement with Nilekani’s viewpoint, advocating for a comprehensive strategy that prioritizes model training skills alongside deployment. He believes that this approach will better position India as a leader in AI technology and drive future advancements in the industry.

  • India Star Abhishek Sharma Sent Warning, England T20Is “Final Opportunity” To Cement Future

It is certainly a transitioning time for hosts India as they adjust to life without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who retired from the shortest format after the 2024 T20 WC victory. Abhishek Sharma is one of the few players on the shortlist of replacements but has failed to show consistency in his brief tenure with the national team. The left-handed top-order batter is known for his ability to hit all parts of the ground. This prowess was on full display when he scored a blistering century off 47 deliveries in the second T20I vs Zimbabwe in July 2024.

Former India batter Aakash Chopra has acknowledged Sharma’s potential but believes he will need to be in full form in the five-match series against England, beginning on Wednesday at the Eden Gardens, if he wants to maintain his spot in the side.

“Abhishek’s form has been a little up and down. In the beginning, in his second T20I, he scored a century against Zimbabwe. After that, a lot of promise, and a lot of potential, but not enough performance. So, I think for Abhishek Sharma, this is the final opportunity, and I really love the kid. I think if he does well, it will be a great thing. But these 5 matches—go ahead and live your life. Because in these matches, like Sanju has made his name in the last 3 matches, in the same way, Abhishek Sharma will have to do it. Or else, there will be a little change in time, and Jaiswal will come back,” said Chopra to Star Sports.

Sharma has represented the national team in 12 T20Is and barring the century against Zimbabwe, he has managed to accumulate 156 in 11 games. Although his strike rate is promising at 171.81, his average is certainly a worry at 23.27.

The Suryakumar Yadav-led team will be bolstered with the return of pace veteran Mohammed Shami ahead of the all-important Champions Trophy, scheduled to start next month. Shami last played for India in the ODI World Cup final against Australia in November 2023. On the other hand, pacer Mark Wood will make his return to the team for the first time since August. He will join Jofra Archer and Jamie Overton in England’s pace-attack as the visitors announced their playing XI for the series opener on Tuesday.

India and England have faced each other 24 times in T20Is, with India holding a slight advantage with 13 wins to England’s 11. However, India have won five of the last seven T20I encounters between the two teams since 2021. Their last T20I clash occurred in the semi-finals of the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 Cricket World Cup, where India secured a memorable victory.

The series will begin in Kolkata and then move to Chennai, Rajkot, Pune, and Mumbai for the remaining matches. The final T20I will take place in Mumbai on February 2.

Chopra further went on to label the battle of heavyweights as a ‘bat-vs-bat contest.’

“It’s going to be a bat-vs-bat contest. Because batting is a heavy-weight on both sides. If we look at the clash, it’s not a light-weight clash. It’s a heavy-weight clash, in which, if you hit a six, the other team can hit two. And it’s possible that if the pitch is right, both innings will be equal. The tempo can be set with the first match, and the other team will also look at it from the same perspective.

“You’re also playing elevens. You’re also worried about batting. That’s why you play two-three proper bowlers; the rest are all-rounders. So, when both teams play the same type of cricket, almost a similar brand of cricket, then there should be a good clash. In my opinion, there should be a lot of runs,” he added.

Indian star cricketer Abhishek Sharma has been sent a warning ahead of the upcoming T20I series against England, with selectors making it clear that this is his “final opportunity” to cement his future in the national team.

The talented all-rounder has shown glimpses of his potential in the limited opportunities he has had so far, but has failed to consistently deliver the goods. With stiff competition for places in the Indian team, Sharma needs to make a strong impression in the upcoming series to secure his spot.

The 21-year-old left-handed batsman and left-arm spinner has been on the fringes of the national team for a while now, but has struggled to make a mark in the chances he has been given. With the selectors keeping a close eye on his performances, Sharma will need to step up and deliver in the series against England.

Sharma has the talent and potential to succeed at the highest level, but he needs to show more consistency and maturity in his performances. With the selectors running out of patience, the upcoming T20I series against England could be Sharma’s last chance to prove his worth and secure his spot in the Indian team.

It remains to be seen whether Abhishek Sharma can rise to the occasion and make the most of this “final opportunity” to cement his future in Indian cricket. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if he can deliver when it matters the most.

  • Situation unclear about India skipper Rohit Sharma travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy captains event

New Delhi [India], : There is no clarity on whether India captain Rohit Sharma will travel to Pakistan for the ICC’s official captains’ call to mark the start of the 2025 Champions Trophy, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Situation unclear about India skipper Rohit Sharma travelling to Pakistan for Champions Trophy captains event

The upcoming ninth edition of the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy is scheduled to take place in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates from February 19 to March 9.

The captains’ event, which typically occurs before the tournament, is tentatively planned for February 16 or 17 in Karachi. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has not yet received an official communication on the matter from the International Cricket Council , ESPNcricinfo reported.

“It [Rohit travelling to Pakistan] has not yet been discussed. It is not on the agenda yet,” Devjit Saikia, the BCCI’s newly-appointed secretary, told ESPNcricinfo.

Due to strained political relations between the two countries, India has not toured Pakistan since 2008, when they participated in the Asia Cup.

The two arch-rivals last played a bilateral series in India during the 2012-13 season, which featured white-ball matches. Since then, India and Pakistan have mostly faced each other in ICC tournaments and Asia Cups. Notably, Pakistan traveled to India for the 2016 T20 World Cup and the 2023 ODI World Cup.

In an official capacity, no Indian player has visited Pakistan in recent years. However, BCCI officials have traveled to Pakistan.

In 2023, BCCI president Roger Binny and vice-president Rajiv Shukla attended an official PCB dinner in Lahore during the Asia Cup. The invitation was extended by then PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf.

In a separate development, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the board would comply with all jersey guidelines for the ICC Champions Trophy.

This clarification follows reports suggesting that the BCCI might exclude the tournament host, Pakistan’s name, from their jerseys, as India will play all their Champions Trophy matches in Dubai.

There has been confusion and uncertainty surrounding India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma’s potential travel to Pakistan for the upcoming Champions Trophy captains event. Reports have been circulating suggesting that Rohit may skip the event due to security reasons and tensions between the two neighboring countries.

The event, which brings together captains from all participating teams in the Champions Trophy, is set to take place in Pakistan. However, with the current political climate and strained relations between India and Pakistan, Rohit’s participation in the event remains uncertain.

Fans and cricket enthusiasts are eagerly waiting for clarity on Rohit’s travel plans, as his presence at the event could be a significant moment for cricket diplomacy between the two nations. Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.

  • India v England: first men’s T20 cricket international – live | Twenty20

    Key events

In other news, India are without multi-generational multi-format talent Jasprit Bumrah because of injury. In fact only four of today’s XI started the T20 World Cup final last year: SKY, Axar Patel, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh. But India’s talent pool is among the deepest in cricket history (I was going to say the deepest and then I remembered the Australia A batting line-up of 1994-95), so don’t go betting the farm on England.

    Pre-match reading

Tanya Aldred is a genius. You know it, I know it. This is the latest bit of proof.

“Hi Rob, looking forward to this,” says Luke Dealtry. “Of Luke Littler’s triumph, I think you wrote that he is a “multi-generational talent”. I’ve been wondering if this is mere hyperbole inflation or something worth exploring. Which cricketers are multi-generational as opposed to generational? Perhaps Don Bradman is the only ‘all-generational talent’ in sport. Please expand.”

Look, we live in a world where multiple Goats can apparently co-exist; I’m just trying to survive out there!

As with the phrase “world class”, I don’t really know the precise definition of “generational talent”. How can Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham both be generational talents? Doesn’t that just mean they’re really good?

It might, just might, be a load of pompous nonsense. And by using the phrase “multi-generational talent”, I might be the most pompous eejit of all. I always wanted to be the best in the world at something.

    Team news

The great Mohammed Shami – who hasn’t played for India since the 2023 ODI World Cup final because of injury – was expected to return but he hasn’t maded the cut. England have gone with pace; India have three frontline spinners in Axar Patel, Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi.

India Abishek, Samson (wk), Tilak, Suryakumar (c), Hardik, Rinku, Reddy, Axar, Bishnoi, Varun, Ashdeep.

England Salt (wk), Duckett, Buttler (c), Brook, Livingstone, Bethell, J Overton, Atkinson, Archer, Rashid, Wood.

India win the toss and bowl

The Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav says the wicket looks a bit sticky. The dew should help the ball skid on when India bat. Jos Buttler would also have fielded first.

England named their team early, as is Baz’s wont. It’s seriously exciting – possibly a bit too exciting, because on a bad day that pace attack will go the distance.

Salt (wk), Duckett, Buttler (c), Brook, Livingstone, Bethell, J Overton, Atkinson, Archer, Rashid, Wood.

    Taha Hashim’s preview

There are so many brilliant young cricket writers and broadcasters around, and Taha is literally sitting at the top table.

India’s T20 squad is radically different to the names selected for the one-dayers, when the more storied names – Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah – return. But depth is rarely an issue here and Sharma and Kohli have been replaced with little trouble following their T20 retirements after the World Cup win last year in the Caribbean.

A fresh top three of Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma have six T20 international centuries between them in that period. They may even welcome the extra English pace at Eden Gardens, which hosted the highest successful T20 run chase last April, a Jonny Bairstow hundred helping Punjab Kings to score 262 with eight wickets to spare against Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.

India have won 13 out of 15 since lifting the trophy in Barbados, done with seven totals north of 200, including a staggering 297 for six in a 133-run win against Bangladesh in October. Those numbers are daunting, surely even for someone as relentlessly optimistic as McCullum.

    Preamble

Buckle up, strap in, choose your own metaphor. Things are about to get lively. Three years ago, Brendon McCullum infused a woebegone England Test team with the spirit of white-ball cricket. Now he’s taking charge of the actual white-ball team. As spin-offs go, this could be anything from Frasier to Baywatch Nights. The only guarantee is that it won’t be dull.

This is the first of eight matches on England’s short tour of India: five T20s, three ODIs. The match begins at 1.30pm GMT, 7pm in Kolkata.

  • England in India: Fast bowler Mark Wood back for first T20 after injury

Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, pace bowlers Brydon Carse and Saqib Mahmood, as well as leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed are the players to miss out on a place in McCullum’s first XI.

Duckett’s promotion means England return to the opening partnership used in the ODI series against Australia in September.

Duckett missed the white-ball tour to West Indies in November because of his Test commitments and Salt opened with Surrey batter Will Jacks, who was left out of the squad to tour India.

Salt will continue to keep wicket against India with captain Jos Buttler leading from the field.

Gus Atkinson has been selected for his first white-ball matches since 2023 on the back of a stellar debut year in Test cricket where he took 52 wickets in 11 matches in 2024.

He has previously played three T20s and nine ODIs.

Spin-bowling all-rounder Jacob Bethell also retains his place after a breakthrough winter.

He impressed in the under-strength England side on his debut tour of West Indies and then scored fifties in each of his first three Tests in New Zealand before Christmas.

“All credit to him [Bethell],” Buttler said. “He has done incredibly well coming into international cricket.

“He has a good head on his shoulders and has the game for it.

“It was fantastic to watch him in New Zealand. He has been playing really well and this is a new challenge for him and one I know he is excited for.”

McCullum’s arrival comes as England begin preparations for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next month. The next T20 World Cup is also in India and Sri Lanka next year.

“It is not a new set up because Baz [McCullum] has been around for a while and there are a lot of players in this squad that have been with him the Test set up,” added Buttler.

“I am looking forward to building that relationship. It is going to be a great series against a really top side in their own conditions.”

India are the current T20 world champions but have named a youthful squad for the T20 series. Experienced fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah is injured and will miss the series.

England’s fast bowler Mark Wood is set to make his comeback in the first T20 match against India after recovering from a shoulder injury. Wood, known for his pace and aggression, will be a crucial asset for the England team as they take on the formidable Indian side.

The 31-year-old has been out of action for the past few months but has worked hard on his rehabilitation to make a strong return to the team. His ability to bowl at speeds of over 90 mph will add a new dimension to England’s bowling attack and provide a much-needed boost to their chances against the in-form Indian batsmen.

Wood’s return will be a huge morale booster for the England team, who will be looking to make a statement in the T20 series against India. His presence will add depth and firepower to the bowling unit, which will be crucial in containing the powerful Indian batting lineup.

Fans will be eagerly anticipating Wood’s comeback and will be hoping that he can make a big impact in the upcoming matches. With his fiery pace and aggressive style of bowling, Wood will be a key player to watch out for in the England vs India T20 series.

A series win vs England could lift the mood in India camp before Champions Trophy
KOLKATA: There are some scars that take time to heal. But time is at a premium for coach Gautam Gambhir as the knives are out since India lost the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under.
With the Champions Trophy just a month away, it’s important that the Indian dressing room gets a breath of fresh air. Gambhir knows only a series win can change the mood fast as nothing succeeds like success.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led side thus has a responsibility to lift the morale of Indian cricket by scripting a victory against England in the five-match T20I series which kicks-off at the Eden Gardens here on Wednesday.

    10

India will definitely start as favourites as they are yet to lose a bilateral series since winning the T20 World Cup in Barbados last year. The Men in Blue will go in with their tails up having won five of their last seven matches against England in this format. However, only five players of that World Cup winning side are in this India side with stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja having quit this format.
But youngsters like Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma have chipped in well as worthy replacements. Opener Sanju Samson will look to make a statement since being ignored for the CT after having scored three tons in his last five T20I innings.
Varma’s emergence as a strong player in the middle-order after hammering two T20I hundreds last year will surely reduce the pressure on the skipper, who himself can turn a match on its head.
It remains to be seen whether India’s latest sensation Nitish Kumar Reddy, who will provide another pace bowling option to the side, gets a game over Rinku Singh, who has not been in the best of form recently.

    11

    All eyes on Shami
India will look to comeback man Mohammed Shami and left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, India’s highest wicket-taker in the last T20 World Cup with 17 scalps in eight matches, to provide early breakthroughs and put the brakes on a strong English batting line-up.
The visitors might not have fared well in the shortest format in recent times, but they are hopeful of a turnaround now that Brendon McCullum has taken over as the coach. The coach also sounded optimistic about England’s chances.
“We’ve got a batting line-up which is as powerful as any other in the world. We’ve got gun spinners, very good fielders and guys who bowl absolute rockets, so you’ve got options and give yourself the greatest chance of success,” he said.

    12

To begin with their 34-year-old skipper Jos Buttler will bat at No. 3 and relinquish the gloves in this series. Phil Salt, who smashed 1,381 T20 runs last year at a phenomenal strike-rate of 166.18, will continue in the role he took on for the series in the Caribbean last Nov and will open the batting with Ben Duckett.
However, all eyes will be on young left-hander Jacob Bethell, who had done brilliantly coming into international cricket hitting two fifties at a strike rate of 167.96 in the seven T20Is so far. Facing a problem of plenty, McCullum would have struggled to finally decide on his pace-heavy bowling line-up with Mark Wood and Jofra Archer both back after injury issues along with Jamie Overton and Gus Atkinson.
Adil Rashid will be their only specialised spinner.
“I think we’re very fortunate that a lot of our bowlers are very, very capable batters,” Buttler sounded a warning too.

After a disappointing performance in the first T20I against Australia, it’s time for Team India to hit the reset button and come back stronger in the upcoming matches. The loss may have been a setback, but it’s important for the players to learn from their mistakes and make necessary adjustments.

From captaincy decisions to batting collapses, there were several areas where Team India faltered in the first match. But this is not the time to dwell on what went wrong. Instead, it’s an opportunity for the team to regroup, refocus, and show their true potential in the remaining matches.

With a talented squad and experienced players, Team India has the capability to bounce back from this defeat. It’s all about staying positive, working on their weaknesses, and putting up a better performance in the upcoming matches.

As fans, we believe in Team India’s ability to turn things around and emerge victorious in the series. It’s time for the players to reboot, regroup, and come back stronger in the next match. Let’s show our support and cheer them on as they strive for success! #TeamIndia #T20I #Cricket #Reboot
