  • England in India 2024/25, IND vs ENG 1st T20I Match Preview

    Big picture: Teams in transition

Gautam Gambhir and Brendon McCullum have many things in common. They were both stellar openers, they were both captain and coach of Kolkata Knight Riders at different times, they’re both known for their “aggressive” mindsets when it comes to approaching the game from the dugout, and, now, they both find themselves trying to shepherd teams in transition.

India’s has been easier, at least in this format, with three superstars calling time on their careers with T20 World Cup medals around their neck, and others fitting in smoothly over the course of wins against Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa. England’s has been trickier, with one of the most exciting white-ball teams in world cricket struggling in ICC tournaments since their T20 World Cup win in 2022.

This has meant McCullum enters the India T20I series as England’s white-ball coach for the first time, with ambitions of maximising the team’s unfulfilled potential. And for Gambhir, the aim is to show that the T20I team remains unaffected by the poor Test results that have shaken the establishment.

It’s against this backdrop that India and England meet in a five-match series that could test the limits of the shortest format. And as the lines between T20Is and ODIs keep blurring, there will be opportunities for some T20I specialists to stake their claim for future ODI positions – especially after the Champions Trophy concludes.

Five potentially delectable T20 batting surfaces await the two sides across the next fortnight, and the first salvo in Kolkata will give a glimpse of what to expect.

In the spotlight: Bethell and Shami

Very few youngsters right now have the aura of Jacob Bethell. He made blistering international debuts in all three formats at the back end of 2024. He has had a stint with Melbourne Renegades in the BBL, and has an IPL contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru without playing a single game in India. The left-hand batter has developed a reputation of smacking spinners for fun, is a handy left-arm spinner himself, and is considered an electric fielder in the ring and on the boundary line. Could there be a more perfect T20 cricketer in this era? Slotted in at No. 6 for the first T20I against India, Bethell’s stocks have never been higher. England see him as one of their future superstars. Now all he has to do is ace the India challenge.

On the other hand, Mohammed Shami, at age 34, is making an international comeback after an ankle surgery and a knee niggle. He hasn’t played international cricket since India’s loss in the 2023 ODI World Cup final, and despite India trying other fast bowlers in the interim, there’s a feeling that Shami remains India’s second-best seamer behind Jasprit Bumrah. India have gambled by selecting him for next month’s Champions Trophy, and the focus in the T20Is and ODIs against England will be on how his body holds up. It’s also the perfect way for him to come back, at his domestic-cricket home ground.

Team news: Archer, Wood combine, but what of Bishnoi?

England captain Jos Buttler said he was especially pleased at having every first-choice T20I player available for this series. They have named their XI already, with Phil Salt taking the gloves and Ben Duckett opening alongside him. Buttler himself will be at No. 3, with England also having the searing pace and fit bodies of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood to attack India. While Wood is the only one in the XI without a century in senior cricket, even he can crunch big shots, and that makes England one of the most dangerous batting outfits at the moment.

England: 1 Phil Salt (wk), 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Jos Buttler (capt), 4 Harry Brook, 5 Liam Livingstone, 6 Jacob Bethell, 7 Jamie Overton, 8 Gus Atkinson, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark Wood

India have two major decisions to make: how many spinners to play, and how deep their batting should look. Arshdeep Singh, Shami and Hardik Pandya should be be the seamers, while Varun Chakravarthy and Axar Patel could be the two spin options. That probably leaves India deciding between seam-bowling allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, spin-bowling allrounder Washington Sundar, and an outright wristspinner in Ravi Bishnoi. England are right-hander-heavy, and struggle against fingerspinners, two factors that could decide India’s eventual choice.

India (probable): 1 Sanju Samson (wk), 2 Abhishek Sharma, 3 Tilak Varma, 4 Suryakumar Yadav (capt), 5 Hardik Pandya, 6 Rinku Singh, 7 Axar Patel, 8 Nitish Kumar Reddy/Washington Sundar/Ravi Bishnoi, 9 Mohammed Shami, 10 Arshdeep Singh, 11 Varun Chakravarthy.

Pitch and conditions: Dew and runs aplenty

Kolkata is going to offer a hard deck with true bounce. The boundaries are small, and the ball in January will get wet very quickly. That means Eden Gardens should be a paradise for batting. Suryakumar and Buttler both felt conditions would be the same irrespective of the toss result, so expect a belter with dew around.

Stats and trivia: Arshdeep closes in on Chahal

    • Among Full Members, England have the second-worst batting average against fingerspin since the start of 2024: 26.8. Against top sides like Australia, South Africa and India, it drops to 13.88 at a run rate of only 6.74.
    • With 95 wickets in 60 T20Is, Arshdeep is only one wicket behind Yuzvendra Chahal, who leads the pack for India in the format. If Arshdeep gets to the landmark of 100 wickets in this five-match series, he’ll become the fastest bowler to get there in T20Is. Currently, Haris Rauf is the quickest T20I bowler to the landmark of 100 wickets, having achieved it in 71 games. Also, since Arshdeep’s T20I debut, no bowler has taken more wickets in the powerplay (40) or in the last five overs (46).
    • India have not lost a bilateral T20I series at home in the last six years. Their last defeat was against Australia in February 2019. In the 16 series since, India have won 14 and drawn two.
    • Since the T20 World Cup 2024, India have scored at 9.2 runs per over in the powerplay, an astonishing 10.3 from overs 7-15 and 10.9 in the last five overs. In this period, no team has had a better run rate between overs 7-15 or a better ball-per-boundary ratio (4.7).
    • Archer has the wood over both Suryakumar and Hardik, with both batters striking at only 116 against him while averaging 14.5 and 19 runs, respectively.

    Quotes

“It’s a really exciting tour coming to India with what I’d say is a full line-up for us. Sometimes there’s so much cricket that certain players have to be rested or managed. But that’s certainly not the case for us at all in in this series.”
Jos Buttler believes England have all bases covered

“Eden Gardens is a special feeling, because this is where I played when I started playing regularly.”
Suryakumar Yadav, who first became an IPL regular at Kolkata Knight Riders, wants to make the most of the occasion on Wednesday

  • India set to take back 18,000 citizens from US to placate Trump

India’s government is prepared to work with Donald Trump’s administration to identify and take back all its citizens residing illegally in the US, an early signal from New Delhi that it’s willing to comply with the incoming American president and avoid a trade war.The two countries have together identified some 18,000 illegal Indian migrants in the US to be sent back home, according to people familiar with the matter. The figure could be much higher than that, though, given it’s unclear how many illegal Indian migrants live in the US, the people added, asking not to be identified because the discussions are private.

Like several other nations, India is working behind the scenes to appease the Trump administration and avoid the brunt of its trade threats. The crackdown on illegal migration has been a signature campaign pledge for Trump. Within hours of his inauguration Monday, the new president moved to fulfill that pledge as he pushed to end birthright citizenship and mobilize troops on the US-Mexico border.

In return for its cooperation, India hopes that the Trump administration would protect legal immigration channels used by its citizens to enter the US, in particular the student visas and the H-1B program for skilled workers. Indian citizens accounted for almost three-fourths of the 386,000 H-1B visas granted in 2023, according to official data.

(Join our ETNRI WhatsApp channel for all the latest updates)

Any slack in taking back illegal US migrants could also adversely affect India’s labor and mobility agreements with other countries, the people familiar with the matter said. With a jobs shortage back home, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has signed migration agreements with an array of countries in recent years, including Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Israel and others.

“As part of India-US cooperation on migration and mobility, both sides are engaged in a process to deter illegal migration. This is being done to create more avenues for legal migration from India to the US,” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs. “The latest deportation of Indian nationals from the US by a chartered flight is a result of this cooperation,” he added, referring to an October repatriation action. Rising Numbers
India is a relatively modest contributor of illegal migrants to the US, with its citizens accounting for about 3% of all unlawful crossings encountered by US border patrol officials in fiscal 2024, according to US Customs and Border Protection data. Latin American countries such as Mexico, Venezuela and Guatemala account for a far larger share.

However, the tally and share of Indian illegal migrants has been rising modestly in recent years. In particular, it has shot up at the less-trafficked northern US border, where Indians account for almost a quarter of all illegal crossings and also the biggest share of unlawful migrants stopped at that entry point, the data show. While the total number of illegal Indian migrants in the US isn’t certain, a report published last year by the Department of Homeland Security estimated some 220,000 unauthorized Indian immigrants resided in the US as of 2022.

India has already sought to show a cooperative attitude toward US border enforcement efforts, including toward officials in the Biden administration. In October, the Department of Homeland Security said it chartered a “large-scale” repatriation flight of more than 100 Indian nationals without the right to be the US, building on the more than 1,100 Indian citizens deported during the previous 12 months.

Taking back illegal migrants could also further Modi’s goal of deterring secessionist movements overseas, according to people familiar with the discussions, including the so-called Khalistan movement, which seeks to establish a separate Sikh state on Indian soil. India has cracked down on the movement, and officials believe some of the group’s backers in the US and Canada are illegal migrants.

    Trade Worries
While Modi is seen to have friendly ties with Trump, and has welcomed the new administration, it is cautious of any unpredictable action from the US president, which could lead to a costly trade war. Trump has repeatedly complained that India’s high import taxes hurt American businesses, and has vowed reciprocal duties on the South Asian nation.

In his first day in office, Trump has focused his attention on immediate neighbors. The US president said on Monday that he was planning to impose tariffs of as much as 25% on Mexico and Canada by Feb. 1, blaming them for “allowing vast numbers of people” into the country.

Canada in particular was “a very bad abuser,” Trump said, complaining about fentanyl and migrants crossing its US border.

While it’s not fully clear why the northern US border has become such a major entry point for unauthorized migrants from India, reasons could include a halt to visa-free travel for Indians to El Salvador in 2023, and the relative ease of travel to Canada for Indians, according to the Niskanen Center, a Washington-based think tank.

In a surprising turn of events, India has announced plans to repatriate 18,000 of its citizens currently residing in the United States. This move comes in response to pressure from President Donald Trump, who has been vocal about his desire to see countries take back their citizens who are living in the US illegally.

The decision to bring back these individuals has sparked debate and controversy within India, with many questioning the motives behind the sudden move. Some believe that the Indian government is simply trying to appease Trump in order to maintain positive relations with the US, while others argue that it is the moral responsibility of the country to assist its citizens who are in need.

Regardless of the reasons behind the decision, the repatriation process is expected to be a complex and challenging task. The Indian government will need to work closely with US authorities to ensure a smooth and efficient return for these individuals, many of whom have established lives and families in America.

As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this move will impact the relationship between India and the United States, and what implications it may have for the thousands of citizens who are set to return home. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Is India planning to take back 18,000 illegal immigrants from US? – Firstpost

India is hoping that its cooperation with the Trump administration will safeguard legal migration channels used by citizens to enter the US like student visas and the H-1B program

The Indian government is working with the new US administration under President Donald Trump to bring back 18,000 undocumented Indian immigrants from the country after the leader launched sweeping orders to deport illegal migrants.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the US and Indian governments have identified 18,000 Indian citizens living illegally in the country to be sent back home. Sources have told the publication that the figure can be much higher, although it is unclear how many more people can be added to the list since the number of
Indian illegal immigrants is not known.

Declaring illegal immigration a national emergency on the day of his inauguration, Trump ordered the Pentagon to provide support for border wall construction, detention space, and migrant transportation and empowered the secretary of Defense to send troops to the border as needed.

“One of my most important obligations is to protect the American people from the disastrous effects of unlawful mass migration and resettlement. My Administration will marshal all available resources and authorities to stop this unprecedented flood of illegal aliens into the United States,” Trump said.

India is hoping that its cooperation with the Trump administration will safeguard legal migration channels used by citizens to enter the US like student visas and the H-1B program.

Failure to address the issue of illegal US migrants could negatively impact India’s labour and mobility agreements with other nations, sources familiar with the matter told Bloomberg. Amid a domestic job shortage, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government has signed migration agreements in recent years with several countries, including Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, Japan, Israel, and others.

According to a Pew Research report of 2024, Indians (725,000) account for the third largest group of illegal immigrants in the US after Mexico and El Salvador.

Meanwhile, data from the US Customs and Border Protection show that the number of unauthorised Indian immigrants is rising in the country. Notably, illegal crossings have surged at the less-trafficked northern US border, where Indians make up nearly a quarter of all crossings and represent the largest group of unlawful migrants intercepted at that entry point.

In recent news, there have been reports suggesting that India is planning to take back 18,000 illegal immigrants from the United States. This move comes amid increasing tensions between the two countries over immigration policies.

It is said that Indian officials are in talks with their US counterparts to discuss the repatriation of these individuals who have been living in the US without proper documentation. This issue has been a point of contention between the two nations, with the US pushing for the deportation of these individuals and India facing pressure to accept them back.

While the details of the plan are still being worked out, this development raises questions about the complexities of immigration policies and the challenges faced by both countries in managing illegal immigration. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • To avert trade war, India ready to repatriate its 18,000 illegal migrants from the US: Report

As the new US administration is preparing for a crackdown on illegal migration after Donald Trump’s second term began on Monday, India is set to take back its citizens residing illegally in America, according to a report by the news agency Bloomberg.

The report said that India is working behind the scenes to appease the Trump administration to avoid a trade war with the US.

“The two countries have together identified some 18,000 illegal Indian migrants in the US to be sent back home,” Bloomberg reported citing people familiar with the matter.

The numbers could be much higher, as it is unclear how many illegal Indian migrants live in the US.

A report published last year by the US Department of Homeland Security estimated some 220,000 unauthorized Indian immigrants resided in the US as of 2022.

“Any slack in taking back illegal US migrants could also adversely affect India’s labour and mobility agreements with other countries,” Bloomberg reported.

Within hours after taking oath as 47th US President on Monday, Trump pushed to end birthright citizenship and mobilize troops on the US-Mexico border.

India also hopes that the Trump administration will protect legal immigration channels used by its citizens to enter the US, in particular student visas and the H-1B program for skilled workers.

According to official data, Indians accounted for almost three-fourths of the 386,000 H-1B visas granted in 2023.

“As part of India-US cooperation on migration and mobility, both sides are engaged in a process to deter illegal migration. This is being done to create more avenues for legal migration from India to the US,” said Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for India’s Ministry of External Affairs, as per the Bloomberg report.

“The latest deportation of Indian nationals from the US by a chartered flight is a result of this cooperation,” he added, referring to an October repatriation action.

President Trump on Monday signalled plans to impose previously threatened tariffs of as much as 25% on Mexico and Canada by February 1, reiterating his contention that America’s closest neighbours and largest trading partners are letting undocumented migrants and drugs flood into the US.

“We’re thinking in terms of 25% on Mexico and Canada because they’re allowing vast numbers of people” across the border, Trump said.

In a bid to avoid a potential trade war with the United States, India has reportedly agreed to repatriate around 18,000 of its citizens who are currently living in the US illegally. The move comes after the Trump administration threatened to impose tariffs on Indian goods if the country did not take action to address the issue of illegal immigration.

According to reports, the Indian government has been in talks with US officials to facilitate the return of these migrants, many of whom are said to be living in the country without proper documentation. While the exact details of the repatriation process have not been disclosed, it is believed that the two countries are working towards a mutually agreeable solution.

The decision to repatriate the illegal migrants is seen as a strategic move by India to de-escalate tensions with the US and prevent any potential trade disruptions. It is also a reflection of the growing importance of the bilateral relationship between the two countries, which have been working to strengthen their economic and strategic ties in recent years.

As the situation continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how the repatriation process will unfold and what impact it will have on the broader relationship between India and the US. However, the willingness of both countries to engage in dialogue and find a solution to the issue of illegal migration is a positive sign that they are committed to resolving their differences through diplomatic means.

  • India mines e-waste for battery minerals but industry has dark side

Mohammad Abrar wakes up coughing most mornings. It’s not yet dawn but New Delhi is already blanketed in thick smog when he sets off for work.

By 4am, Abrar, aged 50, reaches Seelampur, a small neighbourhood in the capital’s north-east suburbs, which is home to India’s largest electrical-waste market.

The market’s narrow lanes are lined with small scrapstores overflowing with piles of broken computers, telephones, TVs, microwaves, washing machines, ACs and end-of-life batteries.

Abrar is one of more than 50,000 informal workers, including women and children, who make a living sifting through thrown-out goods to recover valuable materials that can be recycled and eventually reused in modern technologies.

In recent years, Abrar and his peers have become the backbone of a fast-growing network of start-ups seeking to extract energy transition minerals from e-waste in a process known as “urban mining”.

Seelampur’s e-waste market is a vast treasure trove for the highly-coveted metals and minerals the world needs to shift from fossil fuels to clean energy systems and curb climate change.

Charging cables for everyday items contain copper, a conductive metal which is used in virtually all electricity-related technologies. The aluminium in electronic components is needed to manufacture solar panels.

But most sought after still are batteries. The majority of electronics such as mobile phones, laptops and vapes use batteries that contain lithium, cobalt and nickel. The same minerals are used to make batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and storing renewable energy.

India has been making headlines for its growing e-waste recycling industry, where valuable minerals for batteries are extracted from discarded electronic devices. However, this booming industry also has a dark side that often goes unnoticed.

While the extraction of precious metals like cobalt, lithium, and nickel from e-waste can be profitable and environmentally beneficial, the process is often carried out in unsafe and unregulated conditions. Workers, including children, are often exposed to hazardous materials and chemicals without proper safety precautions in place.

Furthermore, the improper disposal of e-waste can lead to environmental pollution and health risks for nearby communities. Electronic devices contain toxic substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium, which can leach into the soil and water supply if not handled properly.

As India continues to ramp up its efforts to mine e-waste for battery minerals, it is crucial that the industry is regulated and workers are provided with the necessary protections and safeguards. Sustainable and ethical practices must be implemented to ensure that the benefits of e-waste recycling outweigh the potential risks and negative impacts on both people and the environment.

  • Dakota Johnson, Chris Martin hold hands in India on rare public outing five months after shutting down split rumors

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin are still going strong.

Five months after split rumors had fans in a frenzy, the longtime couple was spotted smiling and holding hands while out and about in Mumbai, India, on Friday.

Johnson, 35, visited Mumbai with Martin, 47, ahead of his three Music of the Spheres World Tour shows with Coldplay. The rock band has three sold-out concerts between Saturday and Tuesday at DY Patil Stadium, one of the country’s multi-purpose sports arenas.

Johnson and Martin were reported to have split in August 2024 after seven years together.

However, Johnson’s rep swiftly told Page Six that there was no truth to the report, adding that they “are happily together.”

The actress then took matters into her own hands by flashing her stunning emerald engagement ring at photographers while dining with Jeremy Allen White and Blake Lee in Malibu, Calif.

The pair were first linked in 2017 and were rumored to have briefly split in 2019. They then sparked engagement rumors in 2020.

In March 2024, an insider exclusively told Page Six that the pair had been engaged for six years.

Johnson, the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, has previously gushed about being a stepmother figure to Martin’s kids — Apple, 20, and Moses, 18 — whom he shares with his ex-wife, Gwyneth Paltrow.

The pair share a tight bond despite his 2015 split from Melanie.

Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin were spotted in India holding hands on a rare public outing, putting an end to any lingering rumors of a split. The couple, who have been together for over two years, looked happy and relaxed as they strolled through the streets of Mumbai.

This public display of affection comes five months after reports surfaced that the couple had called it quits. However, it seems that those rumors were unfounded, as Johnson and Martin appeared more in love than ever during their recent trip to India.

The couple has been notoriously private about their relationship, rarely making public appearances together. But their recent outing in India has fans speculating that their romance is stronger than ever.

It’s always heartwarming to see a Hollywood couple defy the odds and make their relationship work, despite the constant scrutiny and speculation. Here’s to Dakota Johnson and Chris Martin, proving that love can conquer all.

  • India Champions Trophy squad – Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shami in India’s squad

There were injury concerns over both Bumrah and Kuldeep ahead of the selection on Saturday, with Kuldeep not having played any competitive cricket since his hernia surgery in November, while Bumrah had suffered a stress-related injury during the fifth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kuldeep has been building up his bowling load at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is understood to be bowling 10-12 overs at a go.
The 15-man squad will be led by Rohit Sharma, with Shubman Gill as his vice-captain, and also includes Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was picked for the first time in ODIs. He is likely to be the reserve opener for the Champions Trophy.

With Virat Kohli the No. 3, the middle order has the same look as the squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup with Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul retaining their spots, along with allrounders Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. Apart from Rahul, Rishabh Pant is the other wicketkeeper in the 15, preferred ahead of Sanju Samson who did not take part in the recent Vijay Hazare Trophy. Washington Sundar is the fourth allrounder in the squad, which includes only four specialist bowlers.

Mohammed Shami, who was recently named in the T20I squad for the upcoming home series against England following a long injury layoff, was also named in the Champions Trophy squad. He last played international cricket at the 2023 ODI World Cup, where he was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 24 wickets.

The final squad for the Champions Trophy must be submitted to the ICC by February 11.

India play three bilateral ODIs against England on February 6, 9 and 12 – their first 50-over games since the tour of Sri Lanka in August last year – before the Champions Trophy. India are in Group A in the Champions Trophy and begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20, after which they play Pakistan on February 23, and New Zealand on March 2. India play all their matches in Dubai because their government refused to let the team travel to Pakistan.

India squad for Champions Trophy 2025

Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill (vice-capt), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, Ravindra Jadeja

India has announced its squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy, and it includes some exciting young talent alongside experienced players. Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Mohammed Shami are among the players who have been named in the squad.

Bumrah, known for his deadly yorkers and ability to bowl in the death overs, will be a key player for India in the tournament. Kuldeep Yadav, with his deceptive spin and variations, will add a different dimension to India’s bowling attack.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the young and talented batsman, has been rewarded for his consistent performances in domestic cricket and the IPL. His attacking style of play could prove to be a game-changer for India in crucial matches.

Mohammed Shami, with his pace and swing, will provide the much-needed experience and firepower to India’s fast bowling department. His ability to take crucial wickets at crucial moments could be vital for India’s chances in the tournament.

With a mix of youth and experience, India’s squad for the Champions Trophy looks strong and balanced. Fans will be eagerly awaiting the team’s performance in the tournament as they aim to bring home the trophy once again.

Champions Trophy News LIVE: When will BCCI announce Champions Trophy squad?

Champions Trophy News LIVE: BCCI is likely to announce the squad for upcoming Champions Trophy on January 18 or 19. The Indian cricketing board is likely trying to better gauge the extent of injuries sustained by Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav before making the final call.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025, and there have been some surprises in store. Rohit Sharma has been named as the captain of the Indian team, taking over the reins from Virat Kohli.

One of the biggest shocks in the squad announcement is the omission of fast bowler Mohammed Siraj.
