Coldplay‘s Chris Martin and Hollywood actress Dakota Johnson, known for her role in Fifty Shades of Grey, charmed fans in Mumbai as they prepared for the band’s much-awaited India concerts. The couple was spotted visiting the iconic Shri Babulnath Temple on Friday, seeking blessings from Lord Shiva before their upcoming performances.
Chris, embracing the local culture, wore a pastel blue kurta paired with a Rudraksha mala, while Dakota kept it simple in a printed cotton suit, with her head respectfully covered by a dupatta. The couple, visibly engaged in the spiritual experience, posed for photographers before heading inside the temple.

The couple’s arrival in Mumbai on Thursday evening also made headlines. Chris greeted photographers with a warm “Namaste,” connecting with fans instantly. Dakota, known for her roles in Fifty Shades of Grey and Madame Web, was equally grounded in her demeanor.

Coldplay’s connection with India goes back to their 2016 performance at the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai, making this tour another exciting chapter for the band and their fans in India.

  • Why global stars are now hitting India

Fans from over 500 Indian cities are expected to make their way to Ahmedabad to see Coldplay perform

    “Please come to my city!”

A familiar cry from music lovers all over the world hoping their favourite artists come to their hometown.

Fans in India, though, have often seen that plea fall on deaf ears.

Artists including Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams and Arctic Monkeys appear on the country’s weekly Spotify album chart, where Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) has spent 217 consecutive weeks.

Many world-famous musicians have tended to skip the country.

But that now appears to be changing.

Dua Lipa’s recent performance in Mumbai went viral and Coldplay will soon kick off their tour – nine years after their last visit to India.

Their dates include two shows in Ahmedabad where more than 100,000 people are expected to attend each night.

“To have that experience in our own country, it’s really cool to see that it’s happening more and more,” music fan and aspiring artist Anoushka Maskey tells BBC Newsbeat.

    The attraction of India

Demand for live music appears to be increasing in India, with ticketing platform BookMyShow reporting 18% growth in 2024.

Ed Sheeran is due to play his biggest-ever tour of the country, and artists including Shawn Mendes and Louis Tomlinson will appear at Lollapalooza festival in March.

Marketing professor Dr Sourindra Banerjee, from Leeds University Business School, says India’s 1.4 billion population – and their age – is a big draw for artists.

“You have a large portion of the world, of youth, living in India,” Dr Banerjee tells Newsbeat.

“So if I were in the music business that would be the place I would target, to reap the benefits of the demographic.”

According to the global market research company Statista, the value of the Indian music industry in 2021 was 19 billion rupees (£178 million).

By 2026, it is estimated to have grown to 37 billion rupees (£346 million).

Dr Banerjee says the rise of K-pop in India has shown Western artists the potential of the country for finding new fans.

“Major music labels have research teams who would have seen that someone else [can] take over a large market,” he says.

More broadly, he feels India’s growing wealth and links with the wider world makes it an important place for artists to get a foothold and “collaborate”.

“Not only to access the Indian market, but also access the large Indian [population] which lives outside the country.”

    More chances for Indian artists

Anoushka is excited by the opportunities global artists can bring

For local Indian artists, there is hope that big names could bring big opportunities for them.

Pop/folk singer Anoushka has been making music since 2020 and feels Western artists offer a chance for homegrown acts to find greater visibility.

She has experience herself after opening for Brit Award winner Ben Howard.

“That’s an opportunity that I never thought I would have within the country,” she says.

Independent singer-songwriter Anumita Nadesan says the chance to collaborate with bigger-artists “puts you on the map”.

“It’s very inspiring as well, because before when a mega artist came to India, we had to travel to another country to see their concerts.

“And you get to learn a lot as an artist by going to these concerts,” the Hindi artist says.

Pop artist Frizzell D’Souza, from Bangalore says seeing acts from abroad who started from humble beginnings can send a strong message to Indian audiences that homegrown talent can achieve global fame.

She describes Ed Sheeran as her “songwriting hero” and says his background of busking and playing in grassroots venues is relatable.

“It’s very reassuring to know that someone like him can actually do it,” says Frizzell.

“Even though he’s such a big superstar right now, he did start kind of at the same place that I did.”

Frizzell also sees an opportunity for cultural exchange, with western music figures being exposed to Indian sounds.

She points to rapper Hanumankind, who has charted globally with Big Dawgs and teamed up with A$AP Rocky.

“And that is proof that having international acts come to India is also helping Indian artists [globally] break through,” she says.

But, the artists point out some possible drawbacks to the influx of global stars coming to India.

The biggest risk Frizzell sees is around money – and audiences budgeting mainly for bigger artists.

“I hope I’m wrong about this, but maybe [they] would prefer the bigger international acts and not want to risk it on younger or upcoming acts.”

Anumita adds there is also a chance of artists overshadowing the attention smaller artists get.

“But then it also challenges smaller artists to maybe raise the bar.”

    How India can be better

According to Peony Hirwani, music journalist at Rolling Stone India, the risk of being overshadowed is low as companies involved with events often ensure local artists are the main support acts.

She gives G-Eazy’s 2024 tour as an example, which had only Indian support artists – helping to boost their careers.

Instead, she tells Newsbeat, the focus should be on improving infrastructure to attract the biggest of names such as Taylor Swift and Beyonce – both of whom did not bring their tours to India.

Fans have often complained about facilities, concerts often held in sports stadiums used during India’s lengthy cricket season and not always available year-round.

“So we need more, bigger venues, and a better system in place for music,” Peony says.

Lollapalooza Festival takes place at a horse racing track in Mumbai – the only venue with enough space to safely host it.

“Even some of the [notable] stadiums we have right now… there definitely needs to be conversations about what everyone needs to make our infrastructure and venues better,” says Peony.

One of the main reasons why global stars are now hitting India is the sheer size of the market. With over 1.3 billion people, India represents a huge potential audience for musicians, actors, and other performers. In addition, the country’s rapidly growing middle class means that more and more people have disposable income to spend on entertainment.

India’s cultural diversity is another draw for global stars. From Bollywood films to traditional music and dance, India has a rich and vibrant cultural scene that is unlike anywhere else in the world. For many international celebrities, the opportunity to collaborate with Indian artists and explore the country’s unique cultural heritage is a major attraction.

Finally, India’s increasing prominence on the global stage has made it a key market for brands and businesses looking to expand their reach. By partnering with Indian celebrities and influencers, global stars can tap into the country’s massive consumer base and gain exposure to new audiences.

Overall, the rise of India as a global entertainment hub has made it an increasingly attractive destination for international celebrities. With its huge market, rich cultural heritage, and growing influence, India offers a wealth of opportunities for global stars looking to expand their reach and connect with new fans.

  • Maha Kumbh Mela: World’s Largest Gathering Begins in India

Tens of millions of Hindus are convening this week in what is expected to be the world’s largest human gathering, where a staggering number of devotees, tourists, politicians and celebrities take sacred dips at the convergence of two holy rivers in India.

The religious festival, called the Maha Kumbh Mela, happens every 12 years on the banks of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers in the northern Indian city of Prayagraj. Officials this year expect up to 400 million people — more than the population of the United States — to visit the site in Uttar Pradesh State over the next six weeks.

A major display of Hinduism, the event has recently become an important political event with the rise of Hindu nationalism, backed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing political party. It is also a massive logistical undertaking for government officials working to prevent incidents like stampedes and the spread of diseases.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, or “great festival of the sacred pitcher,” is the world’s largest religious ceremony. Based on a Hindu legend in which demons and gods fight over a pitcher carrying the nectar of immortality, the centuries-old ceremony centers on a series of holy baths, which Hindus say purify their sins.

The holy baths are preceded by processions involving people singing and dancing in vibrant attire, in ornately decorated chariots and wielding ceremonial spears, tridents and swords. To participate, people travel from all over India and the world to the confluence of the Ganges and Yamuna rivers, a sacred site that is also said to be the end point of a mythical third river, the Saraswati.

The timing of the festival, which this year ends on Feb. 26, is based on the astrological alignment of the sun, the moon and the planet Jupiter, which takes around 12 years to orbit the sun. Smaller versions of the festival happen in one of three other Indian cities — Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain — roughly every three years.

The scale of the Maha Kumbh Mela is astonishing. The last one, in 2013, drew 120 million people in Prayagraj, according to a government estimate. An intermediate festival in 2019, though less significant religiously, attracted 240 million people.

This year, the city, home to about 6 million residents, is preparing to host 300 to 400 million people, government officials said. In preparation, the state has built a temporary campsite across a 10,000-acre area, with tens of thousands of tents and bathrooms, roads, parking lots, water and electricity infrastructure and thousands of security cameras and drones.

Many of those preparations — which will most likely make this the most expensive Maha Kumbh Mela to date, at about $800 million — are meant to prevent deadly stampedes and outbreaks of disease, which have happened in previous festivals. The event is also expected to generate billions of dollars in revenue for the state government, officials said.

To accommodate the bathers, the government has also installed a platform made of sandbags along a seven-mile stretch of the Ganges riverbank. On Monday and Tuesday, millions of pilgrims poured into the river on those steps in the chilly morning fog, praying for happiness, health and prosperity.

The Maha Kumbh Mela has always been an important symbol of Hinduism, though it was usually not politicized until the recent rise of the idea of India as a Hindu nation. This year’s festival is the first since Mr. Modi’s Hindu nationalist political party, the B.J.P., became the country’s ruling party 11 years ago.

“It would be interesting to see if Prime Minister Modi goes,” said Arati Jerath, a political analyst in New Delhi. “It’s supposed to be the biggest and most auspicious time to take a dip in the Ganges.”

Yogi Adityanath, Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister who is also a hard-line Hindu priest, changed the name of the festival’s host city in 2018 to Prayagraj from Allahabad. The move, part of a wave of changes brought on by the B.J.P., replaced the Muslim name given by the 16th-century Mughal emperor Akbar with one that references the Hindu pilgrimage site.

In 2019, when India held a general election, the Kumbh Mela presented a major political opportunity to Mr. Modi and his party to appeal to a receptive audience of millions. Mr. Modi won that election.

The next general election is farther away this time, scheduled for 2029. But Mr. Modi, who won by a smaller margin while his party suffered losses in last year’s vote, has put himself in promotional posters for the festival nationwide and called it an embodiment of “India’s timeless spiritual heritage” on social media, tying the spiritual event to the country’s national identity.

“The B.J.P. is hoping to use it to solidify its Hindu nationalist base,” Ms. Jerath said. But she added it was unclear if that would necessarily earn the party more votes. “Whether it works or not, I don’t know, but it certainly helps to take the B.J.P. one step closer to its goal of turning India into a Hindu majoritarian nation.”

Maha Kumbh Mela: World’s Largest Gathering Begins in India

The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the most significant religious gatherings in the world, has begun in India. Held once every 12 years, this massive event attracts millions of devotees from across the globe to take a holy dip in the sacred rivers of India.

The Kumbh Mela is a Hindu pilgrimage where devotees come to wash away their sins and seek spiritual enlightenment. It is believed that bathing in the holy waters during the Kumbh Mela will cleanse one’s soul and lead to salvation.

The Maha Kumbh Mela, which is held in four different locations in India, is the largest and most sacred of them all. This year, the event is taking place in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, where the Ganges River flows.

The Kumbh Mela is not just a religious event, but also a cultural extravaganza. It is a spectacle of colors, sounds, and smells, with thousands of sadhus (holy men), pilgrims, and tourists coming together to celebrate and partake in the festivities.

As the Kumbh Mela unfolds over the next few weeks, millions of people will gather to participate in rituals, attend religious discourses, and witness various cultural performances. The event is not just a spiritual journey but also a celebration of unity and diversity.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many, and for the millions who attend, it is a transformative and unforgettable event. It is a reminder of the power of faith, the importance of tradition, and the beauty of coming together in the name of spirituality.

  • What The US Can Learn From India

The social media landscape is constantly evolving, driven by shifting algorithms and significant developments. One such game-changing possibility is a potential TikTok ban in the United States, which could redefine the country’s social media ecosystem.

    Just How Big Is TikTok?

TikTok has built a huge fanbase in all these years. According to ABC News, currently TikTok has more than 170 million users in the US.

India, on the other hand, had a TikTok user base of approximately 200 million users before it was banned in June 2020, as per The New York Times.

Why The US Wants To Ban TikTok

According to NBC News, in April 2024, US President Joe Biden signed a law that required TikTok to be removed from its Chinese ownership and to be sold to a US company, or it would result in a ban. The case has now made its way to the US Supreme Court.

Concerns over content manipulation and access to sensitive user data by the Chinese government prompted the move that could lead to a possible ban on TikTok in the US.

TikTok’s widespread influence in the US has created a cultural phenomenon, serving as a hub for everything from pop culture trends to breaking news. With growing speculation about its possible ban in the US, users are left questioning: what after TikTok?

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

    So, What After TikTok?

Millions of users have spent years consuming and sharing content on TikTok. However, with the potential ban in the US just days away, users are turning to alternative platforms like Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote, a Chinese short-video app that has recently gained popularity among Americans as a temporary refuge.

    India Without TikTok

A similar shift occurred in India in 2020, when TikTok was unexpectedly banned overnight, over the Indian government’s concerns about TikTok posing a threat to users’ data.

Moreover, the ban was sparked by a border conflict between India and China. Along with TikTok, 59 other Chinese apps were also banned. The list included peer-to-peer file-sharing app Shareit, popular shopping site Shein, gaming app Clash of Kings, and more.

The ban in India pushed TikTok users to move to Instagram, where Reels offered a similar platform for their content.

After the TikTok ban in India, there was a sudden rise in Instagram users. In 2020, Instagram had approximately 1.43 million users and it moved up to 1.69 million in 2021. By 2024, that number had gone up to 230 million users.

In 2025, estimates say Instagram has 385.4 million users in India

YouTube also introduced Shorts, their short-video format, which further capitalised on the demand for short-form video content, reshaping the digital landscape.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

For Americans, the prospect of a TikTok-free social media scene might feel daunting, but there are lessons to be learned from India’s experience.

    Look East

After the ban, Indian creators and audiences adapted by migrating to alternative platforms, including region-specific apps, almost instantly. The sudden change not only transformed user behaviour, but also pushed brands to rethink their strategies, leading to innovative approaches in audience engagement and communication.

For the US, where TikTok has been instrumental in shaping a large part of the social-media landscape, it will take America time to get used to a life without the short-video app.

However, there’s always a jugaad. Ask India.

India, a country rich in culture, history, and diversity, has much to teach the United States in various aspects. From its approach to spirituality and mindfulness to its resilience and resourcefulness in the face of challenges, there are several lessons that the US can learn from India.

One of the key lessons that the US can learn from India is the importance of community and family values. In India, family ties are strong, and communities often come together to support one another in times of need. This sense of interconnectedness and support can be a valuable lesson for the US, where individualism and self-reliance are often prioritized.

Additionally, India’s approach to spirituality and mindfulness can offer valuable insights to the US. With a long history of practices such as yoga and meditation, India has long understood the importance of mental and emotional well-being. By incorporating these practices into daily life, individuals in India are able to cultivate a sense of inner peace and resilience that can be beneficial for people in the US as well.

Furthermore, India’s ability to adapt and innovate in the face of challenges can serve as an inspiration to the US. Despite facing numerous obstacles, from poverty to political unrest, India has continued to grow and thrive. By embracing a mindset of flexibility and creativity, the US can learn to navigate through difficult times and emerge stronger on the other side.

    Gen Beta

Kids born between 2025 and 2039 will be known as Gen Beta. The term was coined by a Futurist Mark McCrindle. The world experienced its last generational shift in 2010 with the birth of Gen Alpha, a generation that will conclude in 2024. He explains in his blog the reason why the last two generations were named ‘Alpha and Beta’ instead of alphabets. The change is to “signify not just new generations, but the first generations that will be shaped by an entirely different world”.
Children born in 2025 are projected to make up 13% to 16% of the global population. They are set to grow up in a world shaped by rapid technological advancements, where artificial intelligence and virtual reality will play a central role in day-to-day life.
Today the world is driven by technology and most people of earlier generations seem to be playing catch up, which gives the Gen Beta an advantage over others. However, experts believe that this will result in a lack of creativity and interpersonal skills.

    1

Experts also predict that Gen Beta will prioritize sustainability, as they are set to inherit a world burdened with pressing challenges such as climate change, overpopulation, and widespread environmental issues. This generation is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing these global crises, shaping a future where sustainable living and innovative solutions become integral to daily life.

The state of Maharashtra in India has welcomed its first Gen Beta baby, marking a significant milestone in the field of genetic engineering and biotechnology. This groundbreaking achievement has opened up new possibilities for the future of healthcare and scientific advancements.

Gen Beta babies are genetically engineered to possess certain desirable traits or characteristics, such as resistance to diseases, enhanced intelligence, or increased longevity. The birth of the first Gen Beta baby in Maharashtra has sparked a wave of excitement and curiosity among scientists, researchers, and the general public.

The successful birth of the Gen Beta baby was made possible through advanced genetic engineering techniques and meticulous planning by a team of experts. The baby and the parents are reported to be in good health, and the baby is expected to live a long and healthy life.

This milestone in Maharashtra has put India on the map as a leader in genetic engineering and biotechnology. It has raised important ethical and moral questions about the implications of creating genetically modified babies and the potential risks and benefits associated with this technology.

As we witness this historic moment in Maharashtra, it is crucial to continue the dialogue and debate surrounding the ethical and social implications of genetic engineering. The birth of the first Gen Beta baby in this state is a significant step forward in the field of biotechnology, and it will undoubtedly shape the future of healthcare and scientific advancements in India and beyond.

  • “Irrespective Of Captain…”: On Virat Kohli Taking Over Captaincy, India Star’s No-Nonsense Reply

“Irrespective Of Captain…”: On Virat Kohli Taking Over Captaincy, India Star’s No-Nonsense Reply

Indian pacer Prasidh Krishna, shared his thoughts on the leadership styles of Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma. Krishna emphasized that while every captain brings their unique approach, the team’s preparation and clarity in execution remain constant, irrespective of who is at the helm.  “I think no matter who is leading, as a team we prepare really well about what we can do and what we need to be doing when he goes in as a bowling unit,” Krishna remarked during the post-day press conference today, underlining the collective effort and synergy within the team.

He further elaborated that the clarity in plans is a hallmark of the Indian side, ensuring seamless transitions in leadership.

“The plan was pretty clear even while Bumrah was on or Virat was on, so not much changed that way,” Krishna added.

Rohit Sharma earlier decided to drop himself from the playing XI in the fifth and final Test of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The world of cricket was left in a state of shock when Jasprit Bumrah came out at the time of the toss on Friday, confirming Rohit’s absence from the playing XI. At the time of the toss, the stand-in skipper confirmed that Rohit opted out.

Coming to the final session of the match, Rishabh Pant’s blitz knock helped India post 141/6 on the board in their second innings on Saturday, extending their lead to 145 runs against Australia on Day 2 of the fifth Border-Gavaskar Test.

Earlier in the day, Australia was bowled out for 181, giving India a slender lead.

Coming out to bat in the final session, Indian openers Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul displayed some fluent strokes, but the first breakthrough came when Scott Boland dismissed Rahul for 13, leaving India at 42/1. Jaiswal soon followed, clean bowled by Boland for 22.

India faced further setbacks as star batter Virat Kohli was caught in the slip cordon by Steve Smith off Boland for 17, falling to a delivery outside the off-stump. At 59/3, India was in trouble.

Debutant Beau Webster added to India’s struggles, claiming his maiden Test wicket by dismissing Shubman Gill for 13.

Rishabh Pant, the wicketkeeper-batter ignited the innings with a scintillating counterattack, smashing Mitchell Starc for a six on the very first ball he faced. He then unleashed a flurry of boundaries, hitting three in a single over from Webster. Pant raced to a half-century in just 29 balls, hitting two consecutive sixes to Starc, the second-fastest fifty by an Indian in Tests. The record of 28 balls, also held by Pant, was set against Sri Lanka in 2022.

Pant’s explosive knock ended at 61 off 33 balls when he was dismissed by Pat Cummins. His innings featured six boundaries and four towering sixes, lifting India to 124/5.

Nitish Kumar Reddy could only add 4 runs before chipping a simple catch to Cummins at mid-off, becoming Boland’s fourth victim of the day.

At stumps, Ravindra Jadeja (8*) and Washington Sundar (6*) remained unbeaten, showing grit to keep India’s lead intact. With the match finely poised, India will look to extend their advantage on Day 3.

  • The last high-profile trip to India by the Biden administration will focus on technology

The last high-profile trip to India by the Biden administration will focus on technology

WASHINGTON (AP) — National security adviser Jake Sullivan will travel to India for a visit focusing on cooperation on strategic technology, including in defense, space and artificial intelligence.

The Biden administration said Sullivan’s visit on Sunday and Monday will include a speech at the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi in which he will stress that the outgoing administration sees the U.S. partnership with India as central to its regional and global priorities, and one with support from both major political parties. It’s expected to be the last high-profile visit to India by the Biden administration.

Sullivan is expected to meet with Indian National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.

India and the U.S. launched a technology initiative in 2022 outlining collaboration on semiconductor production and developing artificial intelligence. The accord was critical in sealing a deal to allow U.S.-based General Electric to partner with India’s Hindustan Aeronautics to produce jet engines in India.

India and the U.S. have grown closer recently, in part in response to China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific region. Biden threw Prime Minister Narendra Modi a state dinner last year.

But ties have also been strained by U.S. prosecutors’ accusation in 2023 that an official in Modi’s government was involved in a foiled assassination plot against an activist of India’s Sikh minority in New York, and the killing of another Sikh activist in Canada.

As the Biden administration’s term comes to a close, their last high-profile trip to India will center around the theme of technology. This trip will serve as a platform to discuss and strengthen the strategic partnership between the United States and India in the field of technology, innovation, and digital economy.

With both countries being global leaders in the tech industry, this trip will focus on collaborative efforts to address key issues such as data privacy, cybersecurity, and the regulation of emerging technologies. There will be discussions on ways to enhance cooperation in areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and 5G technology.

The visit will also provide an opportunity for both nations to explore new avenues for collaboration, including joint research and development projects, technology transfer, and capacity building initiatives. It will be a chance for the Biden administration to showcase its commitment to fostering strong ties with India in the tech sector and to demonstrate the importance of the Indo-Pacific region in shaping the future of technology and innovation.

Overall, the last high-profile trip to India by the Biden administration will underscore the shared values and interests between the two countries in the realm of technology, and highlight the potential for even greater collaboration and partnership in the years to come.

  • US NSA Sullivan to push for Middle-East economic corridor in talks with Ajit Doval | Latest News India

US NSA Sullivan to push for Middle-East economic corridor in talks with Ajit Doval | Latest News India

    Jan 04, 2025 12:07 PM IST

Modi govt will thank Sullivan for his push to India-US ties. NSA Doval has already had two conversations with incoming NSA Mike Waltz.

New Delhi: Outgoing US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan will be holding the third round of initiative on Critical and Emerging Technologies (iCET) dialogue with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Monday to maintain the strategic convergence between two natural allies and push for high technology transfer to India.

US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan with NSA Ajit Doval.

While some may think that it will be a farewell call from Sullivan, it is understood that the two sides will discuss how to operationalize the Middle-East Economic Corridor, which has been hit by the conflict in Gaza. Top officials say that the MEEC is all set to take off with Israel managing to emasculate Iran-backed militias in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria and signatories to Trump backed Abraham Accords are ready to join the economic wagon.

Even though NSA Ajit Doval has had two telephonic conversations with incoming US NSA Mike Waltz, India will lay out the red carpet for NSA Sullivan with Prime Minister Narendra Modi meeting him and his national security planners feting him as the outgoing top official of the Biden administration has gone out of his way to provide India access to critical technologies as well as bring India-US close on strategic ties.

During his soon to be completed tenure, Sullivan not only pushed for the F-414 jet engine deal between US defence major GE and India’s HAL, he also supported India on manufacture of semiconductors as an alternate global supply chain to China’s growing dominance. His support for US high-tech telecom technologies, weapon platforms, quantum computing and space for India has been noted by PM Modi and the Indian strategic community.

However, Sullivan, despite his young age, played a key part in putting pressure on Pakistan on cross-border terrorism against India and he also was the peacemaker when India-US tempers flared up on the Khalistani terrorist G S Pannun issue last year. The US NSA ensured that the India-US ties did not get derailed by daily anti-India rants by Pannun and also made sure that the Biden administration understood India’s sensitivities on Khalistani terrorism in Punjab and perceived support to these elements from Canada and UK.

In end-2024, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also paid a visit to Washington and met all top officials of the outgoing administration as well as new NSA Mike Waltz. The Indian Minister did not meet all those officials of the incoming Trump administration who need to be ratified by Capitol Hill. These meetings were planned well in advance so that there is no hic-up in India-US ties during the transition period.

The proposed economic corridor is expected to play a key role in advancing regional cooperation and promoting economic development.

The talks between Sullivan and Doval are also likely to touch upon other important issues, including security cooperation, counterterrorism efforts, and regional stability. U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan’s visit to New Delhi from Jan. 5-6 is expected to include discussions with Indian counterparts about the impact of Chinese dams, a senior U.S. official said late on Friday.

Washington and its Western allies have long viewed India as a counter to China’s rising influence in Asia and beyond.

“We’ve certainly seen in many places in the Indo-Pacific that upstream dams that the Chinese have created, including in the Mekong region, can have really potentially damaging environmental but also climate impacts on downstream countries,” a senior U.S. official said ahead of Sullivan’s visit.

The official added that Washington will discuss New Delhi’s concerns in the visit.

The Indian government says it has conveyed its concerns to Beijing about China’s plan to build a hydropower dam in Tibet on the Yarlung Zangbo River which flows into India. Chinese officials say that hydropower projects in Tibet will not have a major impact on the environment or on downstream water supplies.

The construction of that dam, which will be the largest of its kind in the world with an estimated capacity of 300 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, was approved last month.

Washington also expects that topics such as civilian nuclear cooperation, artificial intelligence, space, military licensing and Chinese economic overcapacity will be brought up in the visit, the U.S. official said.

American officials will not be meeting the Dalai Lama during the visit, another U.S. official said.

Washington and New Delhi have built close ties in recent years with occasional differences over issues like minority abuse in India, New Delhi’s ties with Russia amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine and alleged assassination plots against Sikh separatists on U.S. and Canadian soil.

The upcoming visit of the U.S. national security adviser to India is set to include discussions on Chinese dams and their impact on regional security. With tensions rising between India and China over border disputes, the issue of Chinese dams has become a key point of contention.

The construction of dams by China along the Brahmaputra River, which flows from Tibet into India and Bangladesh, has raised concerns about water security and environmental impact. China’s dam-building activities have been viewed by India as a strategic move to gain control over water resources and exert influence in the region.

During the visit, discussions are expected to focus on the potential security implications of Chinese dams, as well as ways to address the growing water disputes between the two countries. The U.S. national security adviser is likely to emphasize the importance of dialogue and cooperation in resolving these issues peacefully.

As tensions continue to simmer between India and China, the discussions on Chinese dams are expected to be a crucial aspect of the visit, highlighting the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region. Stay tuned for updates on the outcomes of these discussions and their implications for regional security.
