Steve Smith Sledges Shubman Gill, India Star Loses Wicket Next Ball. Watch

Team India’s struggles against the new ball continue in Sydney as the likes of KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal fail early to pacers. India seemed to have made some amends as Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill began forming a partnership but the latter departed on the final delivery of the first session, with Nathan Lyon emerging as his wicket-taker. Gill looked solid and decisive with his strokeplay until that delivery from Lyon but slip fielder Steve Smith also deserves credit for unsettling the India star.

A video has surfaced on social media, showcasing how Smith tried to get under Gill’s skin with his constant chatter while standing in slips. Smith succeeded with his sledging attempt as Gill edged a delivery straight into his hands right before Lunch.

After Gill’s dismissal, Kohli too headed back to the pavilion soon after the resumption of play in the second session. India wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant copped multiple blows to fight out a full session but Kohli’s seemingly incurable issues outside the off-stump compounded India’s struggles, leaving them at 107 for 4 at tea. Pant (32 batting, 80 balls) did put his head down save once when he lofted Beau Webster for a straight six. He had to endure nasty blows on his bicep, helmet, and twice in the sensitive abdominal area.

Ravindra Jadeja (11 batting off 50 balls) defended dourly as he added 35 runs for the fifth wicket with Pant. Only 50 runs were scored off 25 overs in the second session.

Despite regular skipper Rohit Sharma opting to “rest” on account of his poor form, India’s top order once again flattered to deceive.

While Kohli (17 off 69 balls) could have been dismissed off the very first delivery from Scott Boland, the seamer did have the last laugh in the post-lunch session when the batter jabbed at a delivery on the off-stump channel for the zillionth time to get snapped in the slip cordon.

If one takes away the second innings hundred at Perth out of his last 20 Test innings, Kohli has managed an average of 17.57.

As far as Pant is concerned, the “honest conversations” with head coach Gautam Gambhir seems to have worked with southpaw respecting the game situation save once when he tried to charge down to a Pat Cummins delivery without much result.

But the six off debutant Webster and the back cut boundary just before tea off Nathan Lyon (1/13 in 4 overs) would give him confidence despite the “blood tattoo” created on his left bicep by Boland, the best Aussie bowler on view.

If Pant was disciplined, Shubman Gill’s indiscreet judgement on the last delivery before lunch did cause trouble for India.

Gill (20 off 64 balls) did all the hardwork for close to a couple of hours before stepping out to Nathan Lyon on the last ball of the session only to be caught at first slip.

KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, back as an opening pair, were dismissed within the first hour of play after Jasprit Bumrah opted to bat under overcast conditions.

The heated exchange between Steve Smith and Shubman Gill took an interesting turn during the recent match between Australia and India, as the Indian star lost his wicket just after being sledged by Smith.

In a moment that had fans on the edge of their seats, Smith was seen exchanging words with Gill before the young batsman was dismissed on the very next ball. The intense sledging seemed to have gotten under Gill’s skin, as he attempted a risky shot that ultimately led to his downfall.

The incident has sparked debate among cricket enthusiasts, with some praising Smith for his aggressive tactics while others criticizing him for crossing the line. Regardless of opinions, one thing is for certain – tensions were running high on the field that day.

  • Super stand-in Scott Boland steps up again as Australia turn screw on India | Cricket

Super stand-in Scott Boland steps up again as Australia turn screw on India | Cricket

By now, anyone who watches Test cricket has an idea what kind of person Scott Boland is. Quiet, self-effacing, at home with his work but never with the attention that accompanies it. While Australian crowds have enjoyed the teenage flashiness of Sam Konstas since his all-dancing debut, there is a deeper swell of appreciation, even love, for the fast bowler who gets cheered back to the fence every time he changes fielding position, and responds with a flicker of a smile or a raised hand that is half acknowledgment, half apology.

Being chosen as an unlikely hero was less of a surprise during his three Melbourne Tests, as a home town Victorian, but the same has now been the case in Sydney on both of his forays to the SCG. On day one of the fifth Test against India on Friday, it was Boland as crowd favourite again, nearly finding himself on a hat-trick in the first session, nearly completing a hat-trick in the third, and finishing the best of the bowlers with four for 31 while knocking over India for 185.

A couple of milestones arrived for Boland. First, his 50th Test wicket, a modest marker but one that separates the brief ventures into Test cricket from the substance that can be called a career. It is a number that has often seemed unlikely for Boland: at 32 years old before his first call-up; after a tough match at Nagpur and a tougher one at Leeds in 2023; or as recently as a couple of weeks ago, when he had spent 18 months on the bench behind a perennially fit Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood. Opportunities for Boland have been doomed to be occasional, even after his devastating Ashes debut and a decisive World Test Championship final performance.

The other milestone was his 2,000th delivery, the cutoff to be counted on statisticians’ lists for career figures. Boland is taking his wickets at 18 runs apiece, a mark bettered by only a dozen bowlers ever. Ten of those played before the first world war: the others are Bert Ironmonger from the 1930s and Frank Tyson from the 1950s. This is not just a feelgood story about a modest Aussie toiler getting a modest reward. It is about someone operating at the highest level of the highest level. Boland’s numbers after his debut were wild, but the increased sample size has not much diminished them.

Boland’s career has been a lesson in humility. He played state cricket in an era when the MCG barely stirred, with occasional forays down the road where the Junction Oval was its only competitor in somnolence. His answer was relentless accuracy. For a time around 2016 he transferred that to yorker bowling with the white ball, teaming up with John Hastings to turn the last four overs of each Melbourne Stars innings a parade of 24 balls on the return crease. Both briefly ended up in national white-ball teams. Discarded, Boland reported back for duty at the MCG.

Years on, after all that toil, Test cricket turned around and gave him something different. Brought in as a workhorse, Boland’s career at the top has been defined by wickets in bursts. The most stunning part of his Test adventure has been the way he can explode.

On Friday, when he had Yashasvi Jaiswal caught at gully by the debutant Beau Webster, it made the seventh time that Boland has struck in his first over of an innings. It looked like becoming eight when Virat Kohli edged to slip, but Steve Smith’s parry to Marnus Labuschagne was ruled out by the third umpire.

If it is not the first over, it is the first spell: of the aforementioned 50 Test wickets, 21 have come in that period. Then even when he gets into subsequent spells, he strikes early in those: 12 wickets total in the first over of any spell, 15 in the second over, 10 in the third, accounting for most of his tally. There must be something about his style that is especially difficult to face before players become accustomed.

So many of those early strikes go on to return multiple wickets in an over. His debut in Melbourne exploded by taking out Joe Root and Jack Leach in one evening, then Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson the next day. In Adelaide against West Indies he got Kraigg Braithwaite, Shamarh Brooks, and Jermaine Blackwood in his first over of an innings. Against South Africa in Brisbane he took two in an over in both innings. In the World Test Championship chase, Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja in one over.

Five different times he has taken two or three wickets in consecutive overs, and would have made that six times in Sydney if not for a dropped catch.

His attempt at three wickets in three balls in this match was as close as anyone could get without completing it. Rishabh Pant donated the first wicket with a half-hearted pull, no foot movement and no balance as he dinked it to mid-on, but the scoring suffocation that Boland contributed to at 1.55 runs an over played its part. Nitish Kumar Reddy was fresh off his Melbourne century but out first ball, unable to cope with the steep bounce that Boland extracted while the ball moved away.

Left-hander to right-hander to left-hander, but Boland has rarely had trouble landing one on the spot at the first time of asking. The ball to Washington Sundar decking in, passing the edge so closely they might have whispered to one another, while climbing even more absurdly, making the batter flinch away, ending up in front of the wicketkeeper’s face. Alex Carey dropped it, but let us not dwell on that.

Boland, who has had to content himself with life on the margins, was once again so close. Then he resumed his bashful demeanour, took his cap, and walked into the face of a mighty ovation to become again the solitary figure at fine leg. Bathed in affirmation, offering a tiny wave, too shy for the attention even after being one millimetre away from a Test hat-trick.

In the ongoing Test match between Australia and India, the super stand-in Scott Boland has once again proved his worth as he stepped up to the challenge and helped Australia turn the screw on India.

Boland, who was brought into the team as a replacement for injured Josh Hazlewood, has been in exceptional form throughout the series. In the latest match, he picked up crucial wickets and bowled with great control to put pressure on the Indian batsmen.

With his impressive performance, Boland has once again shown why he is considered a valuable asset to the Australian team. His ability to deliver under pressure and make an impact on the game has been commendable.

As Australia continue to dominate the match, Boland’s contribution has been instrumental in keeping the Indian batsmen in check and setting up a strong position for his team.

Overall, Boland’s performance has been a standout in this match, and his consistent performances have certainly made him a player to watch out for in future games. With his skills and determination, he has proven himself as a reliable stand-in for the Australian team.

  • Australia v India: Sam Konstas ‘under India’s skin’ after fiery finish in Sydney

Australia v India: Sam Konstas ‘under India’s skin’ after fiery finish in Sydney

The exchange came after Konstas clashed with India’s players while making his debut during last week’s fourth Test in Melbourne, won by Australia.

Although he played and missed early on there, he caught the eye by ramping Bumrah for two fours and a six in making 60 in his first international innings.

During the knock, he was involved in an altercation with Kohli, who was fined for what was deemed a shoulder barge in the middle.

In Sydney, Konstas repeated his attacking batting approach, charging the first ball of the innings bowled by Bumrah and later backing away in an attempted cut in the final over.

Former Australia coach and batter Darren Lehmann told ABC Grandstand he hoped Konstas was not “getting caught up in the hype”.

“I don’t mind all of the backing up your players and the bravado,” Lehmann said. “But you can’t win. Australia didn’t win – they lost the wicket of Usman.

“I hope Sam is not getting caught up in the hype because I have seen him play really good innings – Test-match innings with good defence.”

Australia debutant Beau Webster said: “Sammy, he’s a very confident young man.

“That’s what they do these days these youngsters, they sort of get in, get after it and put themselves out there. And you know, he’s got all the skills and all the talent to back it up – so hopefully he has a really good day tomorrow and puts a few runs on the board and gets us into a decent position.”

Australia v India: Sam Konstas ‘under India’s skin’ after fiery finish in Sydney

After a tense and fiery finish to the third Test match between Australia and India in Sydney, tensions between the two teams are at an all-time high. Australian all-rounder Sam Konstas has seemingly gotten under India’s skin with his aggressive on-field antics and trash talk.

Konstas, known for his fiery temperament and competitive spirit, was seen exchanging heated words with several Indian players during the match. His aggressive sledging and confrontational attitude seemed to have rattled the Indian team, who were visibly frustrated by his antics.

The tension came to a head during the final moments of the match, when a heated exchange between Konstas and Indian captain Virat Kohli almost escalated into a physical altercation. The umpires had to intervene to separate the two players, but the damage had already been done.

Despite the controversy surrounding his behavior, Konstas remains unapologetic and defiant, claiming that he was simply trying to get under India’s skin and disrupt their focus. His aggressive tactics seem to have worked, as the Indian team appeared distracted and agitated throughout the match.

As the two teams prepare for the fourth Test match, all eyes will be on Konstas to see if he can continue to unsettle the Indian team and help Australia secure a series victory. With tensions running high and emotions running wild, the stage is set for an epic showdown between the two cricketing giants.

Australia v India: fifth men’s cricket Test, day two – live | Australia cricket team

    Key events

19th over: Australia 66-4 (Smith 18, Webster 13) Beau Webster clubs another couple of runs through midwicket from Krishna. The big Tasmanian has looked good for his baker’s dozen so far. He needs plenty more if Australia are to overhaul India’s 185 today. Can he and Steve Smith go on with it?

Ross McGillivray writes in with an early contender for word of year: “Labuschagne (Verb). To walk off slowly trying to convince yourself and spectators that what just happened didn’t really happen.

I like it Ross. Drop the boffins at Macquarie a line.

18th over: Australia 64-4 (Smith 18, Webster 11) Bumrah and Smith duel. And again Bumrah gets the ball to swing back a mile. Strewth, this Sydney pitch is full of vim. Smith fends a single and Webster does likewise to leave Australia trailing by 121 runs.

17th over: Australia 62-4 (Smith 17, Webster 10) Krishna – not the major deity in Hinduism worshipped as the eighth avatar of Vishnu but the fast bowler from Karnataka – returns. Smith whacked him for six and four from his last two balls. Krishna does better on the first five here. Not so good on the sixth which Webster wallops for FOUR.

Colum Fordham is tuning from pretty/ gritty Naples.

Really ought to be in bed but can’t take my eyes off this spicy contest and, like the last few overs yesterday evening, the Indian quicks are giving the Aussies a tough time. As they have to if India are to square the series.
Great to see Konstas’ fearless reaction to Bumrah and Siraj’s wonderful pace bowling. India have to set more aggressive fields if they want to maximise the opportunity created by Marnus’ wicket
Great to have the OBO for company.

Great to have you aboard, Colum! “Spicy” is the word. Or should I say Speziato!

16th over: Australia 58-4 (Smith 17, Webster 6) Webster flicks for FOUR. That’s 14 from three balls for Australia and the first boundary for Australia’s debutant allrounder. It goes to his head a little on the next one as he fends one into covers and sets off, only to be sharply sent back by Smith. Strewth! Bumrah gets his fifth ball to jag back viciously. That one started on a fifth stump line and sailed over the leg bail!

15th over: Australia 53-4 (Smith 17, Webster 1) Australia struggling in Sydney. Smith has Prasidh Krishna at his throat again. Krishna is in his third Test for India, just two wickets at 65 from them so far. But he’s tall, hungry and fast, sending them down at almost 140kph. Smith doesn’t care. He leans back and casually pulls him square for SIX! Now he goes the other way, leaning into the final ball and lifting it over the offside ring for FOUR. Smith now needs 21 runs to reach 10,000 Test runs.

14th over: Australia 43-4 (Smith 7, Webster 1) Webster edges! He went hard at Siraj and the ball skewed off the cue tip and landed just short of third slip. Close! Now the big allrounder from Snug fends one into the covers and gets off the mark in Test cricket. Siraj has the ball swinging harder than Austin Powers. He beats Smith with the fourth but Australia’s No 4 gets revenge on the next, driving down the ground for three.

13th over: Australia 39-4 (Smith 4, Webster 0) Australia spiralling at the SCG! Beau Webster is out in the middle for his first Test innings. But first new boy Prasidh Krishna is steaming in at Steve Smith. His first ball explodes off the pitch and rears at Smith, cannoning into his hands. That was nasty! Smith, a little unnerved, leaves the rest.

    WICKET! Head c Jaiswal b Siraj 4 (India 39-4)

Head arrives. Head hits a four first ball. Head edges… Head goes! What an over for Mohammed Sira and just reward for some fine fast bowling. Head did what Head does, driving off his toes for the most glorious four from his first ball. Siraj put the next one wide and full. It jagged back at Head who defending, caught a thick edge and sending it squirting into the slips cordon where Jaiswal, who dropped three catches in Melbourne, took his second catch in three balls!

    WICKET! Konstas c Jaiswal b Siraj 23 (Australia 35-3)

The Konstas show ends! Beautiful bowling by Siraj. He put it wide and Konstas flashed at it but swing undid him and it flew to Jaiswal at gully who took a sharp chance. Australian fans slump with disappointment but India are on the up!

11th over: Australia 35-2 (Konstas 23, Smith 4) Konstas ramps Bumrah! That one was right out of the middle and it flew over slips and bounced twice before hitting the rope. The crowd roar. Kid Dynamite is away here. Bumrah sees him coming on the second, puts it wide. Konstas won’t back down. he swipes at the the third, gets hit in the ribs. Has another heave at the fourth but doesn’t connect, instead top edging over the infield for a run. Smith steps away to the last and gets four byes to fine leg. An eventful over!

10th over: Australia 26-2 (Konstas 18, Smith 4) Siraj has it swinging! That one left Konstas late and drew OOOOHs from the slips cordon. Konstas, standing tall with lip twitching, watches two scramble seam deliveries pass through. He’s waiting on a wide one and Siraj delivers on the fifth, allowing a glance to fine leg. Australia trail by 159.

9th over: Australia 25-2 (Konstas 17, Smith 4) Konstas cracks a four! We saw that shot in Melbourne, stepping down to Bumnrah and driving down the ground. He swats at the next one too, bottom edges to fine leg.

8th over: Australia 16-2 (Konstas 12, Smith 4) Steve Smith has arrived. He walked out needing 38 runs to reach 10,000 Test runs and a quick single from Bumrah made it 37. He now squares up to Siraj and punches down the ground for three. Fast start for Smudge! And a painful one for Siraj who has split a finger trying to stop that drive. Blood on the wicket. And now almost a run-out! Konstas clipped it off his hip and Smith set off but Konstas sent him back. Smith had to sprawl to make his ground. A direct hit would’ve had him. Konstas gets another run, swiping wide through gully.

    WICKET! Labuschagne c Pant b Bumrah 2 (Australia 15-2)

Tick, tick… Bumrah! He’s done it again. Brilliant bowling from India’s No 1 man and Marnus starts his snail’s crawl back to the pavilion. That was a pearl of a ball that bit and lifted, kissing the edge on the way through. Sure enough, Snicko shows static and Labuschagne is gone. Australia in early trouble on day two!

7th over: Australia 15-1 (Konstas 11, Labuschagne 2) Bounce for Bumrah! Labuschagne does well to keep it down. He’s undone by the next one. Huge appeal but no upraised finger from the umpire. India seem very confident and will send it upstairs for review…

6th over: Australia 15-1 (Konstas 11, Labuschagne 2) Konstas is beaten! Lovely outswinger by Siraj. It’s a set-up for the wobble seam delivery on middle and leg next. Konstas keeps it out. Fourth ball is a wide and wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant lands on the ball in his tumble to stop byes. He can’t stop that one! Konstas cracks another swinging ball through covers for two.

5th over: Australia 11-1 (Konstas 9, Labuschagne 2) Here comes Jasprit Bumrah. Marnus Labuschagne on strike. He blocks the first and steps out to the second, driving for two. Positive start for Marnus. Bumrah gets him edging the next. The day one bounce is still there in spades on this SCG pitch. Bumrah is up to 135kph as he hunts a 32nd wicket for the series.

4th over: Australia 11-1 (Konstas 9, Labuschagne 0) Runs from the first ball! Siraj strayed to the pads and Konstas clipped him square for two. That will settle the nerves – if this kid has any. Straight balls meet a straight bat on the next two. India are chirpy this morning, none more vocal than Virat Kohli at first slip. Konstas, with that Elvis lip curl, blocks one, leaves one. We’re away!

Players are on the field and we are about to get under way. Australia’s Sam Konstas will face India’s Mohammed Siraj from the Paddington end.

This is the 112th Test between these great cricket nations. Australia have won 47, India 33 and there have been 30 draws. There has also been one tie and one of the heroes of that 1986 thriller was Dean Jones whose innings of 210 in the 45C heat of Madras/ Chennai has gone down in history as one of the bravest of all-time.

Shannon Gill has this fascinating feature about Deano.

We had over 47,000 fans in the Sydney Cricket Ground yesterday and the queues are snaking in again today, particularly with the promise of Sam Konstas batting today.

I’m not sure India share Australia’s love affair with the Sundance Kid from Kogarah. Whether it’s batting like a boy in the backyard, chirping in the field or playing to the crowd, the 19-year-old is getting under their skin as only a lippy teenage boy can.

Here’s how Konstas got his innings started yesterday. The stones on this kid…

Please feel free to shoot me an email during the day’s play. There were some strong opinions piling into the InBox yesterday from all four corners of the globe about the validity of Steve Smith’s catch of Virat Kohli, the stability of Rishabh Pant’s hector protector and whether Usman Khawaja’s last-over stalling or Sam Konstas’s lip service was responsible for Jasprit Bumrah getting his back up and conjuring that jaffa that cost Australia their first wicket.

Day one was an arm wrestle that almost dissolved into a barroom brawl. Here’s how that dramatic final minute unfolded…

For those who came in late, here’s how Geoff Lemon saw day one…

    Preamble

    Angus Fontaine

Greetings cricket fans and welcome to day two of the fifth and final Test between Australia and India in Sydney where the skies are blue and the fish are jumping.

Day one was torrid. On a spicy Sydney green-top India’s batters were battered – and bettered. They scored 185 runs, with no batter getting beyond 40, and wore just as many bruises. Australia’s bowlers were relentless, with Mitchell Starc snarling through 18 overs for three wickets and Pat Cummins chiming in with two. The quiet hero was Scott Boland who took 4-31 from 20 sublime overs with eight maidens.

As we’ve come to expect from these two sides, there was drama and controversy aplenty. Boland caught Virat Kohli’s edge first ball and Steve Smith got the grippers underneath the catch and flicked it up to Marnus Labuschagne to general pandemonium… only for the third umpire to find a blade of grass had touched the ball.

The other flashpoint came in the final minute of the day when Jasprit Bumrah lost his cool with Usman Khawaja who was stalling at the striker’s end. Sam Konstas, who had the crowd on a string all day with two catches and 2000+ selfies, threw a bit of shade Bumrah’s way in support of his partner and the two advanced on each other. Umpires got a stopper in the confrontation but the bear had been poked. Bumrah duly charged in with a demon ball that caught Khawaja’s edge and left Australia 9-1 at stumps.

That’s how we left it. How will it kick off today? Konstas is not out seven after skipping down and launching Bumrah’s first ball of the innings to the boundary. The boy wonder has a big target on his head today. Can he survive and thrive as he did at the MCG? Or will India, needing to win to clinch the series, wrestle back momentum again?

Batten ‘em down and buckle ‘em up. We’ll find out at 10.30am AEST.

Early on Day 2 of the fifth Test, Bumrah scalped Marnus Labuschagne while Siraj removed Sam Konstas and Travis Head, leaving Australia four down as they aim to surpass India’s first innings total of 185. This is Bumrah’s 32nd wicket in the series – the most by any Indian bowler in a series in Australia surpassing the great Bishan SIngh Bedi. It has been all about India so far. (Live Scorecard)

And India have another wicket! It’s Mohammed Siraj this time, removing the ever chirping Sam Konstas. A smart catch by Yashasvi Jaiswal. The Indian team is extra happy and a part of crowd boos too. It was a full delivery and Konstas fell for it. The drive took a thick edge and went to Jaiswal at gully.

Konstas is not shying away from taking huge risks against Bumrah. He lap shots the India star for a smart boundary. The commentators are stunned. For all his chirping, you have to give it to this man that he has potential. Bumrah returns as one of his bouncers hits Konstas’ shoulders. A bye followed by some mundane fielding results in another four from the over.

India vs Australia 5th Test Day 2 live: Siraj’s support

Siraj is steaming in from the other end now. He is mixing it between deliveries that angles in and ones that move away. It is important that the other Indian bowlers continue to support him.

IND vs AUS 5th Test Live: Konstas vs Bumrah

However, all that has happened so far has not affected Konstas much. Steve Smith is the new man on the pitch, and survived a run out chance. Konstas on the other end brilliantly drove Bumrah down the ground for a brilliant four. Now, this is one battle that Bumrah would be eager to win today.

Team India Starts Sydney Test On A Disastrous Note

Team India, which already lost two test matches in a row in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy, has started the fifth and final test match at Sydney Cricket Ground on a disastrous note. It got all-out for mere 185 runs in the first innings. People thought Rohit Sharma’s absence would help team in making a strong comeback but India was poor without him too.

As captain Rohit Sharma opted out due to his poor performance, Jasprit Bumrah wore the skipper’s hat this time. While Shubman Gill replaced Rohit, Prasidh Krishna came in the place of injured Akash Deep. Everyone thought India would make a strong comeback as Bumrah returned to captaincy after winning the first test. However, the first day was a disappointment.

After winning the toss, Bumrah chose to bat first. However, it got a poor start as openers Jaiswal and Rahul got out pretty early. Only Rishab Pant (40) played a responsible innings but it lasted very short. Bumrah’s (22) cameo in the end didn’t help either. As a result, India got all-out for just 185.

Scott Boland (4/31) picked up four wickets, while Mitchell Starc (3/49) and Pat Cummins (2/37) took three and two wickets respectively. After this disastrous start, it has to be seen if India makes a strong comeback later in the test.

In a shocking turn of events, Team India has started the Sydney Test on a disastrous note. The team, which was hoping to bounce back after a tough loss in the previous match, has struggled right from the start.

The Indian batsmen have failed to make an impact, with key players getting out early and the middle order crumbling under pressure. The Australian bowlers have been relentless, making it difficult for the Indian batsmen to score runs.

On the other hand, the Indian bowlers have also struggled to contain the Australian batsmen, who have been scoring runs at will. The fielding has been sloppy, with dropped catches and misfields costing the team dearly.

With the odds stacked against them, Team India will need to regroup and come up with a solid plan to turn things around in the remaining days of the match. The fans are hoping for a miraculous comeback, but it will take a lot of effort and determination from the team to salvage the situation.

Stay tuned for more updates on Team India’s performance in the Sydney Test. Let’s hope they can turn things around and make a strong comeback! #TeamIndia #SydneyTest #CricketUpdates

India drop Rohit Sharma but batters struggle again in Australia | Cricket News

Australia gain the early advantage in Sydney in the World Test Championship deciding fifth Test against India.

India dropped skipper Rohit Sharma but their batting woes continued as they were dismissed for 185 on the opening day of the crucial fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney.

Scott Boland led the way with four for 31 on Friday as Australia’s bowlers revelled in seam-friendly conditions to restrict India’s scoring and knock over wickets with a regularity that delighted a sellout crowd of 48,000.

Only the suspicion of what Jasprit Bumrah, the outstanding bowler of the series and Rohit’s replacement as captain, might do on the surface constrained the joy of home fans packed into the famous old ground.

They got a hint from the last ball of the three overs India managed to bowl before the close of play when Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja for two.

Teenager Sam Konstas, who had a brief altercation with Bumrah just before Khawaja’s departure, will resume on seven not out with Australia nine for one.

Australia lead the series 2-1 and will not only seal the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but also a place in the World Test Championship final against South Africa with a victory in the finale.

“I thought all the bowlers were really good. To bowl them out for under 200 was an excellent day,” said Australia’s debutant all-rounder Beau Webster, who conceded it may not be the highest-scoring surface. “I’m not really sure what a good score is just yet, until both teams bat on it,” he added.

Boland precipitated the end of India’s laboured innings early in the final session when he had Rishabh Pant caught at mid-on for 40 and dismissed Melbourne centurion Nitish Kumar Reddy off consecutive balls.

Washington Sundar was beaten by Boland’s hat-trick ball without making contact with it but Ravindra Jadeja was soon trapped plumb in front by Mitchell Starc (3-49) for 26 to leave India reeling on 134-7.

Sundar was unfortunate to depart for 14 when a TV review detected a brush of his glove on a Pat Cummins delivery, while Bumrah wagged the tail with 22 runs from 17 balls before the Australia skipper had him caught at mid-wicket to end the innings.

Pant said he would have been happier with 40 or 50 more runs but felt that India’s score was not that far from par on a tricky wicket. “It’s still a very competitive score, because of the way ball is moving now,” he told reporters. “There’s lot of help for the bowler, and hopefully we can capitalise on that.”

India could still retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with a victory but looked on the back foot from the moment Bumrah won the toss and sent his team into bat.

Cummins said he would have done the same but the paceman was still licking his lips at the greenish tinge on the wicket – and the leaden skies above Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

The tourists had 11 runs on the board when Rahul departed for four and only six more when Jaiswal, on 10, was caught in the slips off Boland.

Boland thought he had Virat Kohli out for a golden duck off the next delivery but the roars of the crowd turned to jeers when it was ruled the ball had kissed the grass as Steve Smith flicked it up for Marnus Labuschagne to catch.

Cummins tossed the ball to Nathan Lyon for the last over before Lunch and the spinner removed Shubman Gill, Rohit’s batting replacement, for 20 with an edge into the busy slip cordon.

Kohli had scored 17 runs from 69 balls when he became Boland’s second victim with a stab at a delivery outside off which Webster collected with a fine diving catch in the slips.

Bumrah said at the toss that Rohit’s absence from the team was the 37-year-old’s own choice. “Our captain has shown leadership by opting to rest in this game,” he explained.

India drop Rohit Sharma but batters struggle again in Australia | Cricket News

In a surprising move, India decided to drop star batsman Rohit Sharma for the second test against Australia. Despite this bold decision, India’s batters continued to struggle in their second innings, failing to chase down a modest target set by the hosts.

Rohit Sharma’s omission from the playing XI raised eyebrows among fans and experts alike, as he has been one of India’s most consistent performers in recent times. However, the team management decided to give him a rest, citing workload management as the reason for his exclusion.

Despite the absence of Rohit Sharma, India’s top order once again failed to deliver, with only a few batsmen managing to make significant contributions. The middle order also collapsed under pressure, leaving the lower order with too much to do in the final overs.

With this loss, India finds themselves trailing in the series against Australia, and will need to regroup quickly if they are to salvage a result in the remaining matches. The team management will have to rethink their strategy and make some tough decisions ahead of the next test to ensure a better showing from their batters.

Overall, India’s batting woes continue to be a cause for concern, and the team will need to address these issues quickly if they are to compete against a strong Australian side. The pressure will be on the batters to step up and deliver in the upcoming matches, as India looks to turn their fortunes around in the series.

India tour of Australia: India vs Australia fifth Test in Sydney Border Gavaskar Trophy on January 3, 2025. Rishabh Pant press conference’

Having dealt with a gruesome car accident, a red cherry hurtling into his body is perhaps the least of Rishabh Pant’s worries. He battled hard against the Australian attack and was India’s top-scorer with a 40 in the fifth Test that began at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday (January 3, 2025).

Struck eight times on his torso, Pant competed hard and was one of the bright spots in a dreary Indian first innings. Reacting to the tough outing, he said: “Definitely it’s painful but sometimes you have to do the hard work for the team and that’s okay. I was not thinking about where I got hit but just played the ball to the best of my abilities.” Later he added: “I think this is the first time I have been hit so much.”

Being in proximity when Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas exchanged words, Pant explained: “They wanted to waste some time. I feel that’s the reason. He had a conversation with Jassi (Bumrah). He said something. I didn’t hear. He wanted to waste some time so we don’t bowl one more over.”

Queried about his pitch-impressions, Pant replied: “It was a little bit tough pitch. The ball was doing off the wicket quite a bit. I wouldn’t say 185 is a par-score. But I think anything over 220-250 would be a par-score, but still a very competitive score because the way the ball is moving, there is a lot of help for the bowlers.”

And on the Washington Sundar dismissal, Pant said: “I feel whatever decision we make on the field, it has to stay with the on-field umpire. Until and unless it’s (evidence) so conclusive to change the decision, I think we should stay with the on-field umpire. Technology can be a little better I guess.”

    Touch of emotion, says Pant

Rishabh Pant admitted to a touch of emotion within the ranks when news about Rohit Sharma missing the fifth Test spread. “He is our captain and obviously there will be some emotion. As for the decision, it was a management call so I was not part of that conversation so I can’t explain anything other than that,” Pant told the media here on Friday.

Asked for his inputs on Jasprit Bumrah as captain, Pant said: “Mostly his message is be positive all the time and don’t think about what has already happened, just give your best on the field. That’s what you want from your captain.”

  • Australia v India: Jasprit Bumrah strikes late but hosts on top in Sydney

Australia v India: Jasprit Bumrah strikes late but hosts on top in Sydney

Australia dismissed India for 185 on day one of the fifth Test but a fired-up Jasprit Bumrah struck with the final ball of the day to boost the tourists late on.

Bumrah had opener Usman Khawaja caught at second slip for two and turned to celebrate in the face of 19-year-old Sam Konstas, with India thinking both batters were wasting time in what proved to be the last over.

The tourists, who trail 2-1 in the best-of-five series and need to win to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy, had earlier tentatively edged to their total on a lively Sydney pitch.

They left out struggling captain Rohit Sharma but the move did little to improve the fortunes of their top order as Scott Boland took 4-31.

India were 72-4 when Boland dismissed Virat Kohli for 17 and 120-6 when Rishabh Pant, who top scored with a cautious 40, and Nitish Kumar Reddy fell to the seamer in consecutive balls.

But Bumrah, captaining India in Rohit’s place, hit three fours and a six in a 17-ball 22 to lift the total and his dismissal left time for India to have three overs at Australia before the close.

The hosts looked to have survived with Bumrah accusing Khawaja of wasting time in the final over, before exchanging words with Konstas as Australia ran the clock down to ensure there was not time for another over.

However, Bumrah had the last laugh as he dismissed Khawaja for a sixth time this series, the left-hander poking an edge to KL Rahul, who took a fine low catch.

It left Australia, who need only a draw to regain the trophy, 9-1.

India need a win to remain in contention to qualify for the World Test Championship final later this year.

In a thrilling day of cricket at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Jasprit Bumrah’s late burst of wickets gave India a glimmer of hope after Australia dominated for most of the day. The hosts finished the day on top, but Bumrah’s late strikes have kept India in the game.

Australia got off to a strong start with openers David Warner and Marcus Harris putting on a solid partnership. The duo looked in control against the Indian bowlers until Mohammed Siraj broke through to dismiss Warner. Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith then steadied the ship, putting on a crucial partnership before Labuschagne fell to Ravichandran Ashwin.

Smith continued to pile on the runs, frustrating the Indian bowlers with his patient innings. However, Bumrah’s late burst of wickets turned the tide in India’s favor. The fast bowler dismissed Smith and Travis Head in quick succession, giving India some much-needed momentum heading into day two.

Despite Bumrah’s heroics, Australia finished the day in a strong position at 274/5. The hosts will look to build on their total on day two, while India will be hoping for early wickets to put pressure on the Australian batsmen.

The series is finely poised at 1-1, with both teams looking to gain the upper hand in this crucial third Test. With plenty of drama and excitement still to come, cricket fans can expect a thrilling contest between these two top sides. Stay tuned for more updates from Australia v India at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Foreign hiker detained at Delhi airport for carrying banned GPS device | Latest News India

A Scottish hiker claimed that she was detained at the Delhi airport on Thursday for allegedly carrying Garmin Inreach, a GPS and satellite messaging device banned in India.

The hiker claimed that she was eventually taken to a police station for questioning and was made to sign some documents.(Hiker Heather / Instagram)

In a video posted on Instagram, the hiker, Heather, alleged that she was pulled aside by security before her flight to Rishikesh.

“At around 10.30am this morning, I was passing through security at Delhi Airport with the intention of taking an internal flight to Rishikesh, I innocently placed my Garmin Inreach in the tray to go through the scanner and at that moment I was promptly pulled aside by security and told to wait,” Heather said in her post.

She said the security personnel subsequently told her that the Garmin Inreach device is banned in India and that she was being handed over to the police.

“I waited and waited, wondering what on earth was going on, I was eventually told that the Garmin was illegal here and that they were handing me over to the police, I called the Embassy whilst waiting for the Police but was told there was little they could do since they were unable to intervene since I was in the hands of the law in this country…,” she wrote.

Heather claimed that she was later taken to a police station for questioning and was made to sign some documents.

“I was eventually taken to the police station, where I was questioned in a fairly friendly manner and made to sign document after document. I didn’t take the ‘no comment’ stance, foolishly or not; it is my nature, to be honest, and after all, there was absolutely no intent on my behalf,” she wrote in her post.

“… At 9pm, I was finally released from the police station, but I am required to return to attend court,” the tourist added.

In a similar incident, a Czech national was booked in Goa last month for allegedly carrying a Garmin Edge 540 GPS device, news agency PTI reported.

The device, banned in India, was found during screening at the Manohar International Airport at Mopa in North Goa. He has been booked under provisions of the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act, 1933 and has been issued a notice to appear before the Goa police.

In a shocking turn of events, a foreign hiker was detained at the Delhi airport for carrying a banned GPS device. The hiker, who was on his way to explore the scenic landscapes of India, was taken into custody after security officials discovered the prohibited device in his luggage.

According to reports, the GPS device in question had the potential to compromise national security and was on the list of banned items for travelers entering the country. The hiker, who claimed to be unaware of the restrictions, now faces legal action for violating the regulations.

This incident serves as a reminder to all travelers to familiarize themselves with the rules and regulations of the country they are visiting. Ignorance is not an excuse, especially when it comes to matters of national security.
