A Canadian Runner Was Arrested in India for Traveling with a Garmin inReach

In early December, a Canadian trail runner named Tina Lewis was two months into her extended trip to India when she ran into legal trouble due to her backcountry GPS communication device.

On December 6, Lewis, 51, arrived at Dabolim International Airport in the state of Goa, to fly to the nearby city of Kochi. She was traveling with a Garmin inReach Mini, a popular GPS and satellite messaging device often used by backpackers and climbers.

“It had been an amazing trip, the trip of a lifetime,” Lewis told Outside.

But when Lewis removed her InReach from her carry-on bag and placed it onto a scanning tray, she said a security officer approached her and asked her questions about the device. Lewis said armed guards then removed her from the line.

Lewis missed her flight. For the next four hours she was detained and interrogated about the InReach. Although her eventual fine was just $11, Lewis said she spent more than $2,000 to pay legal fees and bail.

“They treated me like a frickin’ fugitive,” she said.

Outside reached out to India’s Central Industrial Security Force public relations office, as well as the Goa airport division, but neither agency provided comment. Outside also reached out to the Indian embassy in Washington D.C. but did not receive a comment.

Lewis had unknowingly violated an Indian law that requires individuals to obtain a license before owning or using a personal satellite communication device. Lewis spent the next six days attempting to get her passport back from authorities. She had to appear in court on three consecutive days, and she eventually hired lawyers to avoid jail time.

India’s laws prohibiting individuals from owning satellite devices are published online: Unless registered and licensed by the government, satellite communicators are illegal. The Garmin website lists India as one of 14 countries that may “regulate or prohibit the use or possession of a satellite communicator” or are otherwise embargoed by the United States. The other nations on the list are Afghanistan, Ukrainian Crimea, Cuba, Georgia, Iran, North Korea, Myanmar, Sudan, Syria, Thailand, Vietnam, China, and Russia.

But the roots of the law are tied to an obscure rule from India’s past. The ban on satellite communication originated with the Indian Telegraph Act of 1885 and the Wireless Telegraphy Act of 1933. According to Global Rescue, an international medical and security evacuation service, these older laws were reinforced after the Mumbai terror attacks of 2008, when an Islamist militia used satellite communicators to coordinate bombings and shootings that killed nearly 200 people.

Lewis argues that the GPS device was an integral part of her travel kit. She spent much of her vacation traveling alone, and the device provided an added layer of safety. “I was just using the device to stay in touch with my family, to let them know where I was,” she said. Before her arrest, she had used her inReach twice, both when in regions with little to no cell reception.

Lewis shared her story with the running website iRunFar, and she wrote about the ordeal on social media. She said that other travelers reached out to her online—many of those who contacted her were unaware of India’s ban on personal satellite devices, she said.

She isn’t the only traveler to run afoul of the law. On December 9, just three days after Lewis’ arrest, a Czech traveler named Martin Polesny with a Garmin was detained at another Goa state airport. The following day, an American named Joshua Ivan Richardson was arrested with a satellite phone in Dehradun. A month prior, another American was detained at Chennai airport for the same reason.

A competitive trail runner and experienced climber, Lewis said she has previously traveled solo to West Africa, Cuba, Nepal, and China. She said it never occurred to her to leave her inReach behind. “I think it’s just so ingrained in my lifestyle to always have it,” she said. “Hiking technical terrain, scrambling, rock climbing, mountaineering. I always bring a Garmin, especially when traveling alone.”

After publishing her story online, Lewis said some commenters scolded her for not researching the laws before traveling.

“I brought my Garmin to every other country I’ve been to,” she said. “I didn’t think to research that, when our phones and our watches all have GPS now.”

Direct satellite communication features are increasingly standard in modern smartphones. The newest versions of Apple’s iPhones have satellite communication capabilities. iPhones allow users to send messages to emergency services, share location, and stay in touch with emergency contacts, all while off the grid, with no cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, via satellite connection.

    Lewis called the law “ridiculous.”

“It needs to be challenged, and they need to update it,” she said.

Recently, a Canadian runner found himself in a sticky situation while traveling in India. The runner, who was using a Garmin inReach device to track his runs and stay connected with loved ones, was arrested by local authorities for possessing the device.

The Garmin inReach device is a popular tool among outdoor enthusiasts, allowing users to track their location, send and receive messages, and call for help in case of an emergency. However, in some countries, such as India, the device is considered a satellite phone and requires special permission to use.

The Canadian runner was taken into custody and faced charges for illegally possessing a satellite phone. Despite trying to explain that the device was simply for tracking his runs and staying safe while traveling, the authorities were not convinced.

Thankfully, after several days of negotiations and assistance from the Canadian consulate, the runner was released and allowed to continue his travels in India. This incident serves as a reminder for travelers to always research and understand the regulations of the countries they are visiting, especially when it comes to technology and communication devices.

While the Garmin inReach device is a valuable tool for staying safe and connected while exploring remote areas, it’s important to be aware of the laws and restrictions that may apply in different countries. Stay informed, stay safe, and happy travels!

  • Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli’s Aggressive Act As Sam Konstas Pokes India Pacer Again. Wach

Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli’s Aggressive Act As Sam Konstas Pokes India Pacer Again. Wach

Australia’s young opening batter Sam Konstas has time and again shown his intent to not limit his talking to his bat. In the last over before stumps on Day 1 of the 5th Test between Australia and India on Friday, Konstas unnecessarily riled up Jasprit Bumrah over a matter that didn’t even involve him. Right after the incident, Bumrah removed Konstas’ opening partner Usman Khawaja at the striker’s end, prompting an act of aggression from the Indian pacer, prompting Virat Kohli to join in as well.

It all happened on the penultimate delivery of the day when Khawaja took a little time to get ready at the striker’s end, resulting in Bumrah’s rhythm getting disturbed. However, the non-striker Konstas involved himself in the incident by uttering a few words to Bumrah, riling up the pacer.

On the next delivery, Bumrah got Khawaja caught in slips, thanks to KL Rahul‘s brilliant effort.

After taking the wicket, Bumrah charged at Konstas at the non-striker’s end as a part of his celebratory act. Kohli, who is known to wear his heart on his sleeve, also came running from the slip cordon and seemingly charged at Konstas.

Earlier, India disappointed with the bat yet again, putting a total of 185 runs on the board, that too after stand-in skipper Jasprit Bumrah contributed 22 runs with the bat. Rishabh Pant was the top-scoring batter for India on the opening day, scoring 40 runs before giving-in to his attacking instincts yet again. Kohli, on the other hand, disappointed again by scoring just 17 runs before getting dismissed to the outside off delivery again.

India had benched Rohit Sharma in the match over poor form but his replacement Shubman Gill failed to make his start count as well, scoring just 20 runs before getting dismissed by spinner Nathan Lyon.

Bumrah’s solitary wicket before stumps on Day 1 set the desired platform for India ahead of Day 2. India would hope for a few quick wickets early on Day 2.

This is not the first time that Konstas has targeted Bumrah with his probing questions, and it seems like the Indian pacer is not taking it lightly.

On the other hand, Indian captain Virat Kohli has also come to Bumrah’s defense, slamming Konstas for his aggressive questioning and standing up for his teammate. Kohli’s fiery attitude and protective nature towards his players have once again come to the forefront, showing his unwavering support for the Indian team.

NEW DELHI: The opening day of the fifth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground was a spectacle of high drama, with Virat Kohli surviving a golden duck scare earlier in the day and the action culminating in a heated exchange between Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah and Sam Konstas.
The incident occurred when Australian opener Usman Khawaja delayed Bumrah’s delivery, signaling that he wasn’t ready to take strike just as Bumrah began his run-up. Adding to the tension, Konstas intervened, gesturing at Bumrah to stop.
“What’s the problem?” Bumrah was heard asking Konstas as the two players approached each other in a confrontational manner. The on-field umpire quickly stepped in to diffuse the situation and separated the two.

Bumrah, however, had the final word moments later. On the very next delivery, he dismissed Khawaja with a full-length ball that induced an outside edge, neatly taken by KL Rahul in the slips.
Rather than celebrating the wicket, Bumrah turned to Konstas and delivered an icy death stare, adding another layer of intensity to the SCG showdown.

Australia ended the opening day at 9/1 after bowling India out for 185. India, who had recovered from 57/3 to 107/4 at tea, suffered a dramatic collapse in the final session, losing their last six wickets for just 78 runs.
Rishabh Pant top-scored with a gritty 40 off 98 balls, while Scott Boland was the standout bowler for Australia, claiming 4/31 in an impressive spell.

  • India offers $500,000 in relief to quake-hit Vanuatu. China sends supplies, engineering team

India offers $500,000 in relief to quake-hit Vanuatu. China sends supplies, engineering team

New Delhi: India Thursday offered $500,000 (Rs 4.3 crore) in rehabilitation assistance to Vanuatu, following the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck off the coast of its capital city Port Vila on 17 December.

“As a close friend and partner under the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) and as a gesture of solidarity with the friendly people of Vanuatu, Government of India extends a relief assistance of USD 500,000 to support relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts,” the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement.

At least 14 people are reported to have been killed in the earthquake and 250 others injured. Multiple landslides were triggered across the island nation, damaging its international shipping terminal in Port Vila, as well as its international airport. A tsunami damaged submarine cables providing internet connectivity to the island nation.

According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), around 2,435 individuals remained displaced a week after the earthquake, while close to 300 aftershocks were felt.

“India has firmly stood by Vanuatu during times of difficulty and devastation caused by natural disasters. An important pillar of India’s Indo-Pacific Oceans’ Initiative (IPOI)… is disaster risk reduction and management. India is committed to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) and continues to be a responsible and steadfast responder in the region,” added the MEA statement.

In recent years, India has looked to the Pacific Island countries, offering aid for quick impact projects and attempting to be a first responder to natural disasters in the region.

In 2014, the Indian government along with 14 Pacific Island nations—Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Palau, Tonga, Cook Islands and Federated States of Micronesia—announced the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC), as a framework for ties.

Since its inception, there have been three summits of the forum, with the last one in May 2023, hosted by Papua New Guinea, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended.

At the summit, Modi announced a number of projects across the 14 countries, including a super-speciality cardiology hospital in Fiji and sea ambulances to all the countries part of FIPIC.

China has also been very active in the region, with Beijing sending at least 35 tonnes of emergency relief supplies to Vanuatu, which arrived Thursday. The aid includes tents, folding beds, water purifiers and medical equipment.

Beijing has also sent a “post-disaster assessment engineering team” to Vanuatu to assist in disaster relief efforts, Mao Ning, a spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry, said at a press briefing Thursday.

India along with its partners in the Quad—Australia, Japan and the US—has been looking to coordinate in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts in the region, especially since China’s outreach to the Pacific Island nations.

In 2022, the foreign ministers of the Quad countries had agreed to guidelines for HADR activities in the Indo-Pacific region, highlighting its intent to coordinate relief efforts.

India has extended a helping hand to the earthquake-stricken island nation of Vanuatu by offering $500,000 in relief aid. The Indian government has pledged this sum to assist with the recovery efforts in Vanuatu, which was recently hit by a devastating earthquake.

In addition to India’s generous donation, China has also joined in the relief efforts by sending supplies and an engineering team to assist with rebuilding efforts in Vanuatu. The Chinese government has dispatched a team of experts to provide technical assistance and support for the reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of the earthquake.

The international community has come together to support Vanuatu during this difficult time, demonstrating solidarity and compassion in the face of natural disasters. As the island nation works towards recovery and rebuilding, the assistance from both India and China will undoubtedly make a positive impact on the lives of those affected by the earthquake.

India vs Australia 5th Test Day 1 LIVE Score: KL Rahul opens again after Rohit Sharma dropped, IND win toss and bat

India vs Australia 5th Test Day 1 LIVE Score: Jasprit Bumrah has said that Rohit Sharma “opted to rest” in Sydney

India vs Australia 5th Test Day 1 LIVE Score: Rohit Sharma is sitting out and Jasprit Bumrah is captain again as India won the toss and chose to bat first at the Sydney Cricket Ground ahead of the fifth Test against Australia. The fifth and final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, beginning Friday in Sydney, has preceded significant controversy surrounding the Indian camp, with mounting speculation that the out-of-form Rohit Sharma will be dropped due to his poor performances. As the Indian team battles a series of challenges both on and off the field, all eyes will be on head coach Gautam Gambhir’s handling of the situation, especially after he left the question of whether Rohit would feature in the playing XI unanswered at Thursday’s pre-match press conference.…Read More

Rohit, who has mustered just 31 runs from five innings in this series at an average of 6.2, has come under intense scrutiny. His dismal run of form comes on the back of questionable decision-making as captain, as India trail the series 1-2. “We will take a call on the playing XI after looking at the pitch,” Gambhir had said when asked about Rohit’s inclusion in the XI for the Sydney Test. If Rohit doesn’t play at the SCG, he would become the first Indian captain to be dropped due to poor form.

As per reports, Rohit’s lack of runs makes it likely that India could turn to Shubman Gill, who may return to the side in place of the Indian captain at No. 3. The team’s performance woes are not limited to Rohit, though. Another significant issue has been Rishabh Pant’s shot selection, which has reportedly drawn scathing criticism from Gambhir.

Pant’s questionable form in the series, combined with his inability to capitalize on crucial moments, has seen him become a target for Gambhir’s wrath. Reports suggest that Gambhir had an “honest conversation” with the players post-India’s heavy loss in Melbourne.

Amid all this turmoil, one thing is clear: the Indian team is in transition. Under head coach Gambhir’s leadership, the focus has shifted firmly towards performance, with senior players no longer guaranteed a spot. His no-nonsense approach has certainly created some tension in the dressing room, especially with key figures like Rohit Sharma; an Indian Express report had also revealed earlier this week that another unnamed senior player of the team was ready to step in as ‘interim captain’ to succeed Rohit, following the side’s poor performances.

While some, like Bumrah, have shown resilience and class, others, including Pant and even Virat Kohli, have failed to rise to the occasion in critical moments. The situation is further complicated by reports of disharmony within the team, with tensions potentially affecting the morale and performance of players ahead of this crucial match.

With the World Test Championship (WTC) final within reach, the pressure on India has intensified. A loss to Australia in this final Test will not only see India lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy; it will also all but end their chances of qualifying for the WTC final at Lord’s. India currently require a win and hope that Sri Lanka win both of their Tests against Australia in order to retain a chance of a top-two finish in the WTC table. With Australia firmly in control of the series, India has it all to do.

While India faces internal strife, Australia are emerging as a much stronger force, especially with Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne regaining form. The Australian team will also hand a debut to all-rounder Beau Webster, who replaces Mitchell Marsh after the latter’s lackluster performances with the bat.

In addition, Mitchell Starc has been cleared to play after recovering from his back injury, adding further firepower to Australia’s bowling attack. The Sydney pitch is expected to favour seamers, with Australia’s fast-bowling unit keen to exploit every opportunity.

Despite the Australian team’s dominance, India will take heart from the fact that Jasprit Bumrah, their own pace spearhead, has been in outstanding form. With 30 wickets in the series at a sub-20 average, Bumrah has been India’s standout performer and could be a key figure in India’s push for a series-levelling win. Bumrah could also lead the team as captain if Rohit Sharma is dropped, and his leadership in Perth, which saw India’s only victory in the series so far, may give India the upper hand.

As the final Test approaches, India find themselves at a crossroads. The team’s transition, under the eye of head coach Gautam Gambhir, is one filled with uncertainty. Rohit Sharma’s potential exit from the team, coupled with the growing pressure on other senior members of the side, has certainly stirred some drama in the dressing room. India has everything to lose in Sydney, and how they respond to these challenges will shape their future in Test cricket in the months to come.

Here are some pointers to Day 1 of India vs Australia fifth Test:

    – Jasprit Bumrah is captaining India again, with Rohit Sharma sitting out

    – India won the toss and chose to bat first

    – Shubman Gill returns to the No.3 spot while Prasidh Krishna replaces the injured Akash Deep

India vs Australia 5th Test Day 1 LIVE Score: KL Rahul opens again after Rohit Sharma dropped, IND win toss and bat

In a surprising turn of events, KL Rahul has been given the opportunity to open the innings once again as Rohit Sharma has been dropped from the playing XI. India has won the toss and elected to bat first in the fifth and final Test match against Australia.

The Indian team will be looking to bounce back after a disappointing performance in the previous Test match, where they were bowled out for a paltry total in their second innings. With the series level at 1-1, both teams will be aiming to finish on a high note.

Stay tuned for live updates and commentary as the action unfolds on Day 1 of the fifth Test match between India and Australia. Let’s hope for an exciting and competitive match between these two powerhouse teams. #INDvsAUS #TestCricket #Day1

  • Mitch Marsh has been dropped for the fifth Test against India at the SCG, with Tasmanian all-rounder Beau Webster set to make his debut in Sydney

Mitch Marsh has been dropped for the fifth Test against India at the SCG, with Tasmanian all-rounder Beau Webster set to make his debut in Sydney

“He’s totally understanding. I think his words were ‘not necessarily blindsided’ – he knows he hasn’t scored the runs or taken the wickets he would’ve liked, so that makes you vulnerable. [I’m] really excited for Beau. The first thing [Marsh] said was, ‘I can’t wait to see Beau out there and give it a crack’.”

Webster, who will bat at No.6, has been one of the best players in the Sheffield Shield and can bowl both pace and off-spin if required.

From 93 first-class matches, Webster averages 37.83 with the bat and 37.39 with the ball.

“I don’t think I’d be standing here if I was still wheeling out the off-spinners. It’s a part of my game I’ve been really proud to develop in the last four years,” Webster said of his decision to switch to seam bowling for Tasmania. “It’s taken a lot of hard work early doors from being sore at the start and trying to get my body used to bowling a few overs here and there and then bowling lots more.

    Loading

“Now it feels like it’s as important as my batting game and they go hand-in-hand if you’re struggling with the bat you can still contribute with the ball and vice versa.

“I’ve bowled anywhere from 25 in a day to 40-plus in a game. I don’t think my body’s restricted me in any way so far in the fast bowling department. I don’t hit the crease as hard as the big fast bowlers, but I can bowl long spells and have done for Tasmania. If they’re ever required for the national team I’d be more than happy to take it up.”

Cummins admitted that Webster’s ability to bowl more overs had been a factor in the call. Cummins also foreshadowed the return of Cameron Green later this year after back surgery.

“That was definitely a factor,” Cummins said of Webster’s durability with the ball. “Short turnaround, it’s always nice to have a fifth bowler that perhaps bowls quite a lot for Tasmania, so if we need to call on that we can.

“If you’re going to bat six you’re picked for your batting, which we’ve seen in Sheffield Shield the last couple of years when he takes the game on he’s really changed some games for Tasmania. But particularly that pace bowling is going to be handy.

“[Marsh] was in the side this summer for being a top six batter, so that’s generally a guiding principle when you pick the top order. When he’s at his best he gets into the side on his batting alone and his bowling is a bonus. We’ve got guys like Cam Green, who will be back in the mix at some point as well, who provide some other bowling options.”

Australian XI for SCG Test: Sam Konstas, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Scott Boland.

In a surprising move, Australian all-rounder Mitch Marsh has been dropped from the squad for the fifth Test against India at the SCG. The decision comes after Marsh failed to make an impact in the previous matches, with selectors opting to give Tasmanian all-rounder Beau Webster the opportunity to make his debut in Sydney.

Marsh’s exclusion from the team is a bold move by the selectors, as he has been a regular member of the Australian squad in recent years. However, his recent performances have not been up to par, leading to his omission from the playing XI.

On the other hand, Beau Webster has been in fine form for Tasmania in domestic cricket, showcasing his ability with both bat and ball. His selection for the final Test against India is a reward for his consistent performances and hard work.

It will be interesting to see how Webster performs in his debut Test match and if he can make an impact against a strong Indian side. The pressure will be on him to deliver, but he has the skills and talent to succeed at the international level.

Overall, this decision highlights the competitive nature of Australian cricket and the need for players to perform consistently to retain their spot in the team. It will be a test of character for both Marsh and Webster, but ultimately, only time will tell if this change pays off for the Australian team.

Australia bowl India out to seal dramatic win

Australia beat India by 184 runs in a thrilling conclusion to the fourth Test in Melbourne to take a 2-1 lead going into the final match of the series.

India were set a target of 340 in 92 overs and batted cautiously throughout the innings with little ambition to chase an unlikely victory.

But a sensational bowling performance in the evening session saw Australia take the final seven wickets for just 34 runs as India were bowled out for 155 in the final hour.

The tourists slipped to 33-3 but opener Yashasvi Jaiswal looked intent on securing a hard-fought draw for India before he was caught behind off Pat Cummins for 84 from 208 balls with 21 overs remaining.

Jaiswal had battled through a wicketless afternoon session alongside wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who made 30 from 104 balls – but they were the only men to pass double figures.

Pant eventually ran out of patience and slogged Travis Head to long-on for another wasteful dismissal and his departure after tea sparked the collapse.

Cummins and Scott Boland finished with three wickets each while spinner Nathan Lyon took two after his batting heroics, falling for 41 in the second over of the day as Australia were all out for 234.

He was bowled by Jasprit Bumrah, who finished with 5-57 in another scintillating performance.

The series concludes in Sydney from 2 January, where a win would secure Australia’s place in the World Test Championship final alongside South Africa.

    Key events

Under overcast but rain-free skies, huge queues are snaking into the SCG. Plenty will be disappointed not to be seeing hometown sensation Sam Konstas bat but watching local heroes Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc open the bowling isn’t a bad second prize.

Cummins sees potential in the elements: “Overcast conditions so hopefully we can get the ball to swing around a bit. All the boys have pulled up well after a short turnaround.”

Players are about to set foot on the hallowed Sydney turf for the pre-match ceremonies. India legend Ravi Shastri and former Australia captain Mark Taylor are bringing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy to the podium.

    Here are the starting XIs

Australia: 1 Usman Khawaja, 2 Sam Konstas, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Steven Smith, 5 Travis Head, 6 Beau Webster, 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Pat Cummins (capt), 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Scott Boland

India: 1 Yashasvi Jaiswal, 2 KL Rahul, 3 Shubman Gill, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Rishabh Pant, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 Nitish Kumar Reddy, 8 Washington Sundar, 9 Jasprit Bumrah, 10 Mohammed Siraj, 11 Prasidh Krishna

As expected for India, KL Rahul has been elevated to opener to replace Rohit Sharma. Shubman Gill returns to the side after missing the side in Melbourne and Prasidh Krishna, the 28-year-old quick from Bangalore, will play his third Test.

India have won the toss and will bat at the Sydney Cricket Ground

That’s the decision of India captain Jasprit Bumrah. That’s right, folks – captain Rohit Sharma is OUT. Whether that omission was his decision or the BCCI’s, we’ll find out.

Jasprit Bumrah is saying Sharma has “opted to rest”. He is relishing the chance to bat first on a pitch that doesn’t look “too spicy”…

We’ve played some really good cricket in this series. The last match was pretty exciting. Hopefully we can put up a good show. There seems to be some grass. It doesn’t look to have too many demons or look too spicy. Obviously there will be a challenge with the new ball but if you get though it’s always a good batting track. Our captain has shown leadership by opting to rest in this game. That shows there’s a lot of unity in this team. There’s no selfishness. Whatever is in the teams best interest we are looking to do that. Two changes, Rohit has opted to rest and Akash Deep is injured so Prasidh comes in.

Pat Cummins has admitted he too would’ve batted first. However the SCG pitch is a tad greener than usual so he’s excited to unleash his attack and see if they can sow havoc. Cummins says the squad have had a very easy few days, resting and recharging.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma will not play in the New Year’s Test, as both teams confirm their sides.

Last week debutant Sam Konstas lit up the cricket world. The new face in Australia’s XI today is Beau Webster, a 31-year-old allrounder from the town of Snug, Tasmania.

Webster was presented with Baggy Green #469 this morning by the great Mark Waugh and his ascension has been widely praised. Webster has averaged 57.1 with the bat at first-class level since March 2022 and taken 81 wickets at 31.7 in the same period.

Last summer, he scored 938 runs at 58.62 in Sheffield Shield, including three centuries, while also bagging 30 wickets to help Tasmania reach the final. Only one cricketer has bettered those numbers in a Shield campaign – some bloke called Sir Garfield Sobers 😉

This is the Pink Test, a proud tradition since 2009 in which Cricket Australia and the SCG Trust combine with the McGrath Foundation to raise awareness and much needed funds for breast cancer.

Jane McGrath, wife of Australia Test legend Glenn, was a beloved figure. Jane passed away from the disease in 2008 but her legacy is mighty and this week we honour it. The McGrath Foundation has supported more than 150,000 families across Australia and in 2024, it supported 15,720 new families. So farIf you’d like to support the cause please donate. You can buy a Virtual Pink Seat here for the five days of the Test.

Australia’s players have their pink caps on and will present them to Glenn McGrath shortly whereupon they’ll be auctioned off. The cause is close to their hearts and clearly inspires their efforts on the field. Of the 17 Pink Tests, Australia has won nine, drawn seven (including the one India made in the 2020/21 tour) and lost just once.

There has been major intrigue in the India camp all week with conjecture of a team divided and captain Rohit Sharma about to a) “rest” himself for the Test, b) fall on his sword and resign and/ or retire, c) be axed by selectors for the fifth Test, or d) be retained at the behest of higher powers at the BCCI.

Amidst all the action and emotion it’s easy to forget that Sharma missed the first Test in Perth, where Jasprit Bumrah led India to a magnificent win and a 1-0 series lead. Since the 37-year-old Sharma’s arrival, India have looked unbalanced and the once imperious strokeplay of the skipper has been MIA, with scores of 3, 6, 10, 3 and 9.

The plot thickened yesterday when Sharma didn’t show up to the official press conference and India coach Gautam Gambhir did the duties. Gambhir was spotted in long discussions with Bumrah later that day as rumours heated up that Sharma was out. Nor did Sharma field in slips at India’s training session on the SCG yesterday.

Given it’s the first Test of a new year, the Australia and India squads were hosted by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese at Kirribilli House on the first day of 2025.

The weather? It isn’t raining in Sydney although a heavy dew fell overnight and skies are currently grey. There is a slight chance (20%, I’m told) of an early shower but the latest news from the Bureau is that Day One will likely be uninterrupted: a 26C day with light winds of 15-20kph. For the first three days at least, the forecast is all clear.

Given Sydney’s fickle meteorology – 26 days have been washed out at SCG Tests compared with nine for MCG Tests – that’s a great result. Days four and five look dicier, with a typically tempestuous mix of high heat, rain bombs and lightning. But hey, let’s live for the day and worry about that if/ when it happens.

Australia and India have been battling it out on the cricket field since 1947 when Don Bradman (715 runs at 178.75) and Ray Lindwall (18 wickets at 16.88) led Australia to a 4-0 victory.

Over 111 Tests, Australia have won 47, India 33 with 30 draws and one tie. India’s series victories in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21 shifted the balance of power but Australia’s famous victory at the MCG may signal a new era of dominance.

Regardless of how the next five days play out, both proud nations can set aside their rivalry and declare the cliche as rolled gold truth: Test cricket has been the big winner.

    Preamble

    Angus Fontaine

G’day cricket fans and welcome to the Sydney Cricket Ground for the Guardian’s over-by-over coverage of the fifth Test between Australia and India. Angus Fontaine here with you for the opening salvos before James Wallace steers you home.

After their thrilling victory in Melbourne – a Test witnessed by the largest cricket crowd in Australian history – Pat Cummins’ men lead the series 2-1 and now need only a draw to get their hands on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the first time since 2014-15. For India, only an SCG victory can secure the Trophy for a fifth consecutive time.

This 2024-25 series was billed as cricket’s heavyweight title fight and that hype has borne out. Both sides have thrown incredible punches, looking for the knockout blow. India won the opening round, with a commanding 295-run win in Perth. Australia hit back in Adelaide, triumphing by 10 wickets. The third Test at a rainy Gabba was drawn before Australia broke the deadlock in that fourth Test thriller at the MCG.

All four Tests have delivered extraordinary cricket, feats of individual brilliance and moments of high drama. Sydney should be no different. Both squads enter with new-look lineups. Australia has dropped the misfiring Mitchell Marsh and Tasmanian allrounder Beau Webster will make his Test debut. And sensationally, India will reportedly enter this final Test without their captain Rohit Sharma!

Play is scheduled to start at 10.30am AEST and we’ll have final teams and the coin toss shortly. Brew yourselves a cuppa and get some fuel on board. Today is gonna be BIG.

The highly anticipated fifth men’s cricket Test between Australia and India is finally here! Stay tuned for live updates as the Australia cricket team takes on the Indian team on day one of the Test match. Keep up with all the action, wickets, runs, and more as the two teams battle it out on the field. Who will come out on top in this crucial match? • India coach coy on picking captain Rohit Sharma

India coach coy on picking captain Rohit Sharma

India head coach Gautam Gambhir played it coy when asked if Rohit Sharma, the captain of the test side, would play in the fifth and final test match against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Australia lead the series 2-1 after an impressive 184-run victory in the fourth test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground but India have the chance to tie the series should they win in Sydney.

The form of their captain is a worry though as Rohit is averaging just 10.93 in his last nine test matches and only 6.2 in this series. He scored 3 and 9 in Melbourne and was dismissed both times by opposite number Pat Cummins.

Gambhir, meanwhile, was frosty from the start of his pre-match press conference and said: “The head coach is here, that should be enough,” when asked why Rohit was not also addressing the media.

India’s captain had also skipped the press conference ahead of the third test in Brisbane but on that occasion Shubman Gill had attended in his place. In Sydney, Gambhir spoke to the media alone which has increased speculation over Rohit’s future with the team.

“Everything is fine with Rohit,” Gambhir told reporters before adding that “we’re going to have a look at the wicket and finalise it [the team line-up] tomorrow,” when asked if Rohit was going to play.

Rohit himself is very aware of his down turn in form but feels as though he is not too far away from things clicking back into place. Speaking after the third test in Brisbane he said: “As long as my mind, my body, my feet are moving well, I am pretty happy with how things are panning out for me.

“Sometimes those numbers can tell you that it’s been a while since he has got big runs. But for a person like me, I think it’s all about how I feel in my mind.”

Yet after the defeat in Melbourne the India captain admitted to feeling the mental strain of such an intense series. He said: “As a batter as well, a lot of the things that I am trying to do is not falling in the place that I would want to but mentally, it is disturbing without a doubt.”

Australia also have doubts of their own with Mitchell Starc facing a late push to see if he can overcome a rib injury from the previous match in Melbourne. The fifth test begins on January 3, 2025 in Sydney

India’s cricket coach has remained coy on whether Rohit Sharma will be named as the team’s captain for the upcoming matches. Despite speculation and rumors swirling around Sharma taking on the role, the coach has given little indication of what the final decision will be.

Fans and critics alike are eagerly awaiting the announcement, as Sharma has shown great leadership skills and performance on the field. However, the coach’s silence on the matter has only added to the suspense and anticipation.

With India’s upcoming matches fast approaching, the question of who will lead the team has become a hot topic of conversation. Will it be Rohit Sharma, or will the coach surprise everyone with a different choice? Only time will tell. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
