Real Madrid slip up against Espanyol: Injury blow for Rudiger and anger over Romero’s tackle on Mbappe
Real Madrid slipped up on Saturday night, losing a game many would have expected them to win against an Espanyol side that started the day in La Liga’s relegation zone.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side remain top of the table and one point ahead of Atletico Madrid, who they host on Saturday in a game that could have a big say in this season’s title race.
They will be without Antonio Rudiger for that game — and he is likely to miss the first leg of their Champions League play-off against Manchester City on February 11, too — after the Germany international suffered a muscle injury during the 1-0 defeat on Saturday evening.
That injury leaves Madrid with only one fit senior centre-back for a crucial part of the season (and that is David Alaba who has only just returned from an ACL injury), which has led to criticism of the board’s planning and Ancelotti’s squad management.
That wasn’t the only thing that Madrid fans were not happy about. The performance of the referee and the video assistant referee were also widely criticised, especially the decision not to send off Espanyol’s Carlos Romero for a lunging tackle on Kylian Mbappe. It was Romero who went on to score Espanyol’s 85th-minute winner.
The club were critical of the officials, too. First, on their television channel — where they called for the departure of Rafael Louzan, the president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF) who was appointed last year — and then in the post-match report they published on their website.
Mario Cortegana analyses the big talking points from a disappointing defeat for Madrid…
Madrid’s fury at the match officials
Immediately after the match finished, Real Madrid TV pointed the finger at the match officials for not sending off Romero for his foul on Mbappe (the defender was shown a yellow card).
“It’s mind-boggling — this has been going on for many years in the filthy Negreira league,” said one of the commentators, alluding to the scandal involving Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, the former vice-president of Spanish football’s refereeing committee who owned a company that was paid a total of €7.3million (£6.4m; $7.8m) by Barcelona between 2001 and 2018.
It was in the 60th minute of the game, with the score at 0-0, when Romero lunged at Mbappe to stop a Madrid counter-attack, his studs connecting with the France forward’s knee.
“I knew Kylian is impossible to stop on the run,” Romero explained. “I tried it as best I could, it was a bit ugly, I didn’t like it, I apologised to him.”
The referee did not show Romero a red card, the VAR did not intervene, and the left-back continued to play and later proved decisive with his late goal.
‘The player who should have been sent off scored,” they lamented on RMTV. ‘This is the fate of the CTA (the technical committee of referees), this is the Spanish league, what Mr (Luis) Medina Cantalejo (president of the CTA) had planned has been fulfilled.”
Romero celebrates his late winner (Jose Breton/Pics Action/NurPhoto via Getty Images)The club’s television channel, known for its acid criticism of the refereeing establishment on a weekly basis, also claimed that “(Carlos) Clos Gomez (head of VAR) cannot continue one more minute in charge of VAR” and that “Rafael Louzan (president of the Spanish football federation) has to leave as quickly as he arrived”.
The match report on Madrid’s website began: “Real Madrid were beaten by Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium in a match overshadowed by the performance of referee Muniz Ruiz and Iglesias Villanueva in the VAR room.”
Mbappe, for his part, said it all without saying anything. When asked by journalists in the mixed zone about the decision, he put his hand to his mouth in a zip gesture.
“The decision made by the referee and the VAR is inexplicable,” lamented a very serious Ancelotti in his press conference. “Everyone saw it. The most important thing is to watch and protect the player, fortunately nothing happened.”
Real Madrid were also upset that a Vinicius Junior goal was disallowed in the 21st minute. Their match report said: “The goal was disallowed for a prior foul by Mbappe. In the replay, it was plain to see that Pol Lozano had grabbed the Frenchman by the neck as he entered the area and that the striker then shook off the Espanyol player.”
Rudiger will be a huge miss for Madrid
Only 15 minutes had passed in the game when Rudiger was lying on the pitch in pain and there was immediate concern from his team-mates.
He tried to get up but immediately sat back down and then had to be replaced by academy graduate Raul Asensio.
The club confirmed after half-time that Rudiger was suffering discomfort in his right hamstring and he would undergo scans on the injury. After the game, Ancelotti confirmed Rudiger had a muscle injury.
Rudiger is expected to miss Madrid’s next three matches — the Copa del Rey quarter-final against Leganes on Wednesday, the Madrid derby on Saturday and the Champions League play-off first leg away to Manchester City three days after.
It will certainly be a relief for City striker Erling Haaland if Rudiger were to miss that game, given the big Norway striker has struggled in his head-to-head battles with the German. Real Madrid are the team that Haaland has faced the most in the Champions League and he is yet to score or assist a goal in any of those four matches.
Rudiger’s absence leaves Ancelotti with Alaba as his only senior centre-back available, as no one is counting on Jesus Vallejo, who has only played 10 minutes this season.
The Austria international, who was out between December 2023 and January 2025 with his anterior cruciate ligament injury, has played 70 minutes in four games since his return. However, he is yet to start a game, despite Ancelotti saying he would this week.
Without Eder Militao, who out for the remainder of the season with a similar knee injury, there are only two other alternatives for Ancelotti: Aurelien Tchouameni, a midfielder who has been criticised for his performances at centre-back, and Asencio who, in the summer, was not even among the academy’s top two choices to reinforce the first team in the case of an emergency.
This scenario points to the club’s poor planning in this position. Ancelotti was asked about this shortage of players and signings, but did not want to criticise the board: “We’ve talked about it, we’ve thought about it and we know what we have to do.”
Some inside the club do not understand why Ancelotti has not used Asencio more to give Rudiger a breather. Until yesterday, Rudiger had completed all but four games this season (playing 2,891 minutes); he turns 32 in March and has been carrying a knee problem.
Ancelotti’s Fantastic Four fail to shine
Real Madrid failed to score for the fourth match this season, but it was the first time that has happened when their galactico attack of Jude Bellingham, Rodrygo, Mbappe and Vinicius Jr has started together.
Between them, those four lost possession 47 times during the match — Vinicius Jr (14), Mbappe (11), Rodrygo (11) and Bellingham (11) — and Bellingham and Mbappe were seen looking frustrated while talking together in the final minutes.
According to Opta, Real Madrid enjoyed 76 per cent possession against Espanyol, their highest tally in a La Liga away game since the 2005-06 season.

They dominated when it came to chance creation too, with xG of 1.72 compared to Espanyol’s 0.31.
But they were unsuccessful in attacking positions, and this ended a remarkable run of scoring by the first team. In the previous 14 matches they had scored at least two goals in each one, something they had not done since the 1960-1961 season.
That run is over, and now their focus will turn to Wednesday’s Copa del Rey quarter-final, and then two massive games against Atletico and Manchester City.

Real Madrid slipped up against Espanyol in a tense La Liga clash, with the match ending in a 2-2 draw. The result came as a blow to Real Madrid’s title hopes, as they missed out on a chance to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona.Adding insult to injury, Real Madrid also suffered a blow in terms of injuries, with defender Antonio Rudiger forced off the field early in the second half with a suspected hamstring injury. Rudiger’s absence will be a major setback for Real Madrid, as they look to shore up their defense in the crucial final stretch of the season.
But perhaps the most controversial moment of the match came when Espanyol defender Cristian Romero made a reckless tackle on Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe. The challenge left Mbappe writhing in pain on the ground, and sparked anger among Real Madrid players and fans alike.
Romero’s tackle was met with calls for harsh punishment, with many labeling it as a dangerous and unnecessary challenge. The incident has once again raised questions about player safety and the need for stricter enforcement of rules to protect players from dangerous tackles.
Overall, it was a frustrating and disappointing result for Real Madrid, who will now have to regroup and focus on their upcoming matches as they look to salvage their title hopes.

“Almost Got It Done”: When Shaquille O’Neal Revealed How a Freak Injury Prevented Him from Possibly Winning 2005 Title
When Shaquille O’Neal left for Miami in 2004, he was at the peak of his career. Coming straight out of a three-peat with the Lakers, Shaq joined forces with Dwyane Wade in South Beach and the two got to work immediately. They lost in the Conference Finals to the Pistons in the 2005 playoffs, but Shaq believes that it was nothing but his “freak injury” that kept his team from winning the title.
In an old interview, which was done six months before his fourth title in 2006, Shaq talked about getting so close to the dream in 2005.
The big man claimed that he is usually very cautious on the brink of the playoffs. However, in 2005, he wasn’t cautious at all and ended up getting injured. The “freak injury” that Shaq was referring to was a deep thigh bruise caused by an impact from Jermaine O’Neal, which made it difficult for him to move, let alone do what he wanted to on the floor.
Shaq said that during the playoffs, when the stakes are high, he always raises his game to another level. But he couldn’t do that in 2005 due to his injury.
But he took pride in the fact that he managed to get Miami so close despite his handicap. Shaq said, “I think it [the injury] hindered me in the playoffs. Everyone knows that the playoffs is the time where I like to raise my game, wasn’t able to raise my game and still we almost got it done.”
The Heat took the Conference Finals against the Pistons to Game 7 and lost. Shaq said that if he wasn’t injured, he had no doubts about winning his fourth title that year.
Although Detroit got the best of him in 2005, the following season was the season of redemption for Shaq and the Heat.
Shaquille O’Neal won his fourth NBA Championship in 2006
In 2006, the Heat were on a dominant run. Their stellar regular season run converted well into the playoffs. In the first round, they faced the Chicago Bulls and closed the series in six games. They had to go through the Brooklyn Nets in the Conference Semifinals next.
Despite facing a strong team, it was their easiest challenge on the way to the championship. The Heat closed that series in five games and met the Pistons again for the Conference Finals. This time, with no “freak injury” to deal with, Shaq’s Heat defeated the Pistons in six games.
It took them another six games to defeat the Dallas Mavericks. The Miami Heat won its first title, being led by Dwyane Wade and Shaq. And the big fella was able to step out of the shadow of the Lakers and win his fourth Championship.
In a recent interview, NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal opened up about a pivotal moment in his career that could have changed the course of history. O’Neal revealed that during the 2005 NBA Finals, he suffered a freak injury that ultimately prevented him from potentially winning the championship. With the Miami Heat facing off against the Dallas Mavericks in a highly anticipated series, O’Neal was determined to lead his team to victory. However, during a crucial game, O’Neal landed awkwardly on his ankle, causing him to miss several key plays.
Despite his best efforts to play through the pain, O’Neal’s injury ultimately proved too much to overcome. The Miami Heat went on to lose the series, and O’Neal was left wondering what could have been.
Reflecting on that fateful moment, O’Neal admitted that it was a tough pill to swallow. He knew that his injury had cost his team the championship, and he couldn’t help but feel disappointed.
However, O’Neal also acknowledged that injuries are simply a part of the game. While he may have missed out on a potential title in 2005, he is grateful for the many successes he has achieved throughout his career.
As fans look back on O’Neal’s illustrious career, they can’t help but wonder what could have been if not for that one unfortunate injury. Despite the disappointment, O’Neal remains a true legend in the world of basketball, and his impact on the game will never be forgotten.

Matisse Thybulle Injury Status For Trail Blazers vs Magic
The Portland Trail Blazers have been hit hard by injuries this season. Those injuries are part of the reason why their season has gone off the rails this season.
Despite having won five of their last six games, they haven’t been able to get any closer to making the playoffs. They are still 13th in the Western Conference standings.
Still, their young guys will continue to try to keep winning as many games as they can. Portland wants their young guys to develop for the rest of the year.
Whichever players are left once the trade deadline passes will be viewed as part of the young core that they will build around. At one point, Matisse Thybulle was thought to be a core rotational piece.

Thybulle was traded from the 76ers to the Blazers a couple of seasons ago, and he was expected to be part of their rotation for years to come because of his strong perimeter defense.
Instead, that has not been the case. Thybulle has been injured for a lot of his time in Portland. In his first season with the Blazers, he played in just 22 games. Last season, he was able to play 65, which is much better.
Thybulle has yet to play a single game this season for the Trail Blazers. He is once again on the injury report ahead of their matchup against the Magic.
Thybulle is listed as out because of a sprained ankle. It’s the same ankle injury that has cost him the whole season up to this point.
The season will continue to be a frustrating one for Thybulle. He won’t be making his season-debut in the game against Orlando.

It doesn’t look like Thybulle is going to be part of Portland’s core moving forward. If he can’t stay healthy, there is no reason for him to be figured as part of their plans in future seasons.
Thybulle is a free agent after next season. Until he gets back on the court, he has no trade value. It would be nice for Portland to add him to the mix, though.
For his career, Thybulle averages 4.8 points, two rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game.

Matisse Thybulle Injury Update: Will he be playing in the Trail Blazers vs Magic game?Philadelphia 76ers’ Matisse Thybulle has been dealing with a knee injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the past few games. However, there is some good news for fans of the young guard.
According to recent reports, Thybulle has been making progress with his rehab and is considered questionable for the upcoming game against the Orlando Magic. While his status is still uncertain, there is a possibility that he could make his return to the court in this matchup.
Thybulle’s defensive prowess and energy on the court have been sorely missed by the 76ers, so his potential comeback would be a welcome sight for the team and their supporters.
Be sure to stay tuned for further updates on Matisse Thybulle’s injury status and whether he will be suiting up for the Trail Blazers vs Magic game.

#Matisse #Thybulle #Injury #Status #Trail #Blazers #MagicWill Chet Holmgren play tonight against the Dallas Mavericks? Latest update on the OKC Thunder star’s injury report | NBA News
Oklahoma City Thunder’s rising star Chet Holmgren is set to miss time due to a hip injury, according to the team’s latest injury report. As the Thunder prepare to take on the Dallas Mavericks on January 23, Holmgren’s absence adds to the list of key players sidelined. The 7-foot center, known for his shot-blocking ability and versatility, will be out indefinitely as he recovers.
Chet Holmgren’s injury comes at a crucial point in the season, with the Oklahoma City Thunder holding an impressive 36-7 record. Despite their success, missing a key contributor like Holmgren could pose challenges in maintaining their dominance, especially on the defensive end. Oklahoma City currently leads the NBA in defensive efficiency, allowing just 103.9 points per game. Holmgren has played a pivotal role in anchoring their defense, and his absence could be felt in upcoming matchups.Oklahoma City Thunder forward Chet Holmgren (7) plays in the second half of an NBA basketball game Nov. 6, 2024, in Denver. In the last 20 games, Chet Holmgren has been a consistent presence for the Oklahoma City Thunder, averaging 9.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. His rim protection has also been a major asset, contributing one block per contest. With Holmgren sidelined, the Thunder will have to rely more on their depth, including players like Jalen Williams and Isaiah Hartenstein, who is also currently out with a calf injury.
Chet Holmgren’s injury isn’t the only concern for Oklahoma City. The team is also without Nikola Topic, who is out for the season with an ACL injury, and Ajay Mitchell, who is dealing with a toe issue. This string of injuries puts additional pressure on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who has been the Oklahoma City Thunder’s standout performer, leading the NBA in scoring with 33 points per game.
As Oklahoma City looks ahead, the team will need to adjust its game plan to compensate for Chet Holmgren’s absence. The Thunder are known for their strong defensive schemes and efficient scoring, but losing a key shot-blocker could impact their ability to control the paint. Fans will be eager for updates on Holmgren’s recovery, hoping for his return before the playoffs.

Unfortunately, it looks like Chet Holmgren will not be suiting up tonight against the Dallas Mavericks. The latest update on the OKC Thunder star’s injury report indicates that he is still dealing with a nagging ankle injury and will be sitting out tonight’s game. Fans will have to wait a little longer to see the promising rookie back in action. Thunder’s Chet Holmgren takes significant leap in injury recovery process
As the Oklahoma City Thunder gear up for their four-game homestand, starting against the Sacramento Kings, injured forward Chet Holmgren is making significant progress in his recovery from a pelvic injury.
After a brief two-game road trip, topped by a 116-109 Thunder loss to the Golden State Warriors, Holmgren joined Oklahoma City during a team shootaround ahead of Saturday’s matchup.
Holmgren was seen running up and down the floor with his teammates, and in one video clip, threw down a dunk, per the Thunder Wire’s Clemente Almanza.
There’s no word if Holmgren is ahead of schedule, but he is slated to make his return either before the All-Star break or after the 2025 All-Star Game, which is when he’s most likely to be back in uniform. This is the second significant step in his recovery process. Holmgren made his first big step earlier this month, joining Oklahoma City amid its 15-game win streak in January.
Thunder’s Chet Holmgren made his last appearance in a 127-116 loss against the Warriors, where he suffered the injury. Chet has played in only 10 games this season while averaging 16.4 points, 8.7 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, and 2.0 assists in 2024-25. The Thunder will host the Kings without All-Star Jalen Williams (right sprained wrist) on Saturday.
Jalen Williams’ ‘blessed’ take for himself, Thunder

Cary Edmondson-Imagn Images Thunder forward Jalen Williams has evolved into an All-Star, a well-deserved honor for the 23-year-old forward who’s only strived to improve his game every season.
“Expectations are good. I think the inverse of that is nobody expects anything from you. Then, that kind of sucks,” Williams said. “So I take that as a blessing. I’m not really worried about what other people expect from me. I have a lot of the perspective. I know I’m in my third year. So it’s one of those things I’m constantly searching how to get better.”
It’s an approach that’s led to vast growth for Williams and the Thunder.
“I always say in our exit meeting, above everything else, I want to look back on the year and think about how much better did I get each game and how much better I get throughout the year,” Williams added. “So I think I do a good job of keeping perspective of it. I don’t really care about a lot of the outside noise that’s going on.”
Without Williams, the Thunder will begin their four-game homestand against the Kings at the Paycom Center.
Chet Holmgren, the highly touted center for the Oklahoma City Thunder, has taken a significant leap in his recovery process from a recent injury.Holmgren, who suffered a setback earlier in the season, has been putting in long hours of rehab and working tirelessly to get back to full strength. His dedication and determination have paid off, as he has made significant progress in his recovery.
The Thunder organization is thrilled with Holmgren’s progress and is excited to see him back on the court in the near future. Holmgren’s unique skill set and versatility make him a valuable asset to the team, and his return will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the Thunder’s performance.
Fans are eagerly anticipating Holmgren’s comeback and are looking forward to seeing him back in action. With his work ethic and determination, there’s no doubt that he will come back stronger than ever and make a significant impact for the Thunder. The Knicks’ first loss in six games could prove doubly costly.
LeBron James recorded a triple-double Saturday night in what potentially could be his final career game at Madison Square Garden, and the Knicks couldn’t overcome an injury to two-way forward OG Anunoby as their five-game winning streak came to an end with a 128-112 loss to the Lakers.
The defeat was exacerbated by Anunoby suffering a noncontact injury and limping to the locker room with what the Knicks later termed a sprained right foot after he dropped to one knee upon receiving a pass on the perimeter 1:22 into the third quarter.
LeBron James, who had 33 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds, slams home a dunk during the Knicks’ 128-112 loss to the Lakers on Feb. 1, 2025. Jason Szenes for New York Post The 40-year-old James registered his 122nd career triple-double with 33 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds for the Lakers (28-19), who were without injured All-Star center Anthony Davis.
LeBron’s son, rookie Bronny James, even made his MSG debut and scored late in the game after the crowd was chanting his name.
“It speaks to who he is and his career,” Tom Thibodeau said about LeBron James before the game. “Twenty-[two] years to do it the way he’s done it, everywhere he’s been, if he’s on the team they’re a threat. So they always have a chance.
“Obviously Anthony Davis is a huge part of that, as well. But it’s just the way [James] can bring out the best, not only out of himself, but the people who are around him.”
Josh Hart had 26 points, 13 rebounds and 11 against the team that drafted him in 2017 to notch his seventh triple-double of the season.

But leading scorers Jalen Brunson (17 points) and Karl-Anthony Towns (11) combined to shoot 10-for-30 from the floor for the Knicks (32-17). Precious Achiuwa contributed 15 points and 15 boards off the bench.
The Knicks’ remaining strength of schedule entering the game was the highest in the Eastern Conference, with an opponents’ combined winning percentage of .526 over the final 34 games, and tied for fourth-hardest overall in the league, according to Tankathon.
Thibodeau’s team posted a strong finish to complete January with a 9-6 record, and they already had taken care of the Kings, Grizzlies and Nuggets with a fifth straight formidable foe, the Rockets, slated to finish off the five-game homestand Monday night.

Lakers Injury Report: Jarred Vanderbilt, Gabe Vincent out vs. Sixers
If the Lakers are going to extend their winning streak to five games, they’ll have to do so without Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent, who have both been ruled out for Tuesday’s game versus the Sixers.
Per the Lakers: Jarred Vanderbilt (right foot surgery recovery) is out for tonight’s game at Philadelphia.

This is the second straight game Vincent has missed. Lakers head coach JJ Redick revealed before Monday’s matchup versus the Hornets that Vincent banged his knees during Saturday’s Warriors game, which has caused him to miss both back-to-back games during this road trip.
The injury is officially listed as left knee soreness.
JJ Redick said Gabe Vincent banged knees last game and is dealing with that, while Rui Hachimura’s calf remains sore. He’s hopeful both will be able to play on this road trip (Charlotte is Game 2 of 6), but they’ll take it day by day.

For Vanderbilt, being ruled out seems to be about managing his recovery and not pushing himself too fast too soon. Vando is on a minutes restriction and has returned for two games and has been very good in both outings.
Jarred Vanderbilt is out tonight, per the Lakers. They are keeping him out of the back to back as he continues to return to form after nearly a year-long absence. https://t.co/EI5UxOAhk4

He made good defensive plays in each win and didn’t look like he was limited in any capacity, which is good news for the Lakers.
An abundance of caution is needed with the wing and it is logical and understandable to have him miss a game during a back-to-back while he continues to ramp up.
A positive for the Lakers on the injury front is that they will likely have Rui Hachimura back. The Lakers forward has missed two games with left calf soreness but has been upgraded to probable heading into Tuesday’s game.
The Sixers will also be short-handed on Tuesday. They will be without Paul George and Joel Embiid, as Embiid has practiced but is still unavailable. PG injured his pinky on Saturday in a win versus Chicago and is still out.

The Los Angeles Lakers will be without Jarred Vanderbilt and Gabe Vincent for their upcoming game against the Philadelphia 76ers. Both players are dealing with injuries that will keep them sidelined for this matchup.Vanderbilt, who has been dealing with a knee injury, will miss his second consecutive game. The athletic forward has been a key contributor off the bench for the Lakers this season, providing energy and hustle on both ends of the court.
Vincent, on the other hand, has been sidelined with an ankle injury. The guard has been a reliable shooter and ball-handler for the Lakers, and his absence will be felt on the offensive end.
Despite these injuries, the Lakers will look to rally together and put forth a strong effort against the Sixers. Stay tuned for updates on their status as they continue to recover and rehab their respective injuries.
