Matthews to return from upper-body injury for Maple Leafs against Bruins

The center and Maple Leafs captain missed six games after reaggravating the injury Dec. 20 that forced him to miss nine in November.

Matthews practiced Thursday for the second day in a row and traveled with the team for a 2-1 win at the New York Islanders. He skated in a noncontact jersey Wednesday but competed in drills.

He did not participate in a full morning skate prior to the 6-3 win against the Buffalo Sabres on Dec. 20 but scored and played 19:18. He took two hard hits in the game, one from Sabres forward Tage Thompson in the first period and a cross-check from defenseman Dennis Gilbert in the third period.

“A couple different things but I’d say that definitely (the hits) did not help the cause,” Matthews said. “Rest is helping. I’m not somebody who likes to stay still for long, so I’m just trying to do what I can maybe without overexerting certain things. Just trying to stay in as good shape as you can when you can’t skate.”

Matthews missed nine games in November because of an upper-body injury before returning Nov. 30, a 5-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. During his recovery, he took a five-day trip to Germany to visit a doctor who both he and other Maple Leafs players have seen in the past for consultation. The injury was one he had been managing since missing time during the preseason.

Matthews said he is unsure if he will be able to put the issue entirely behind him at any point this season.

“Yeah, I don’t know,” Matthews said. “I hope so, that’s obviously the goal. It’s tricky with these things. It’s a physical sport, it’s a contact sport, so things happen out there sometimes that are out of your control, so just trying to manage it as best I can.”

Neither Matthews nor Toronto coach Craig Berube have offered any further specifics as to the nature of the previous injury, though the coach did indicate earlier it is not related to the wrist injury Matthews previously had surgery on during the 2021 offseason.

Matthews had 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 11 games after returning from the injury in November, helping Toronto to an 8-3-0 record during that span. He is fourth on the Maple Leafs with 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 24 games this season.

He led the League with a career-high 69 goals last season and has scored at least 40 goals in each of the previous five seasons. Since entering the NHL in the 2016-17 season, Matthews leads the NHL with 379 goals.

Toronto (24-13-2) went 7-2-0 without Matthews in November and 3-3-0 during his most recent absence.

The Toronto Maple Leafs received some good news today as star forward Auston Matthews is set to return from an upper-body injury and suit up for their game against the Boston Bruins.

Matthews, who has been sidelined for the past few games, is a key player for the Maple Leafs and his return will provide a much-needed boost to the team. His scoring ability and playmaking skills will be crucial as the Maple Leafs look to secure a win against their division rivals.

Fans will no doubt be excited to see Matthews back in action and will be hoping that he can help lead the team to victory. With the playoffs just around the corner, having Matthews back in the lineup is a huge positive for the Maple Leafs as they look to make a deep run in the postseason.

Stay tuned for what is sure to be an exciting game as Matthews makes his return and the Maple Leafs take on the Bruins in a crucial matchup. Let’s go Leafs! #LeafsForever #MatthewsIsBack

Destiny Udogie out for six weeks with hamstring injury, Tottenham squad hit by illness bug

Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham Hotspur defender Destiny Udogie will miss six weeks with a hamstring injury, while other members of the first-team squad have been hit by an illness bug.

Udogie, 22, came off in the 50th minute of Tottenham’s 2-2 draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 29 and was replaced by Sergio Reguilon, who was making his first Premier League appearances of the season.

“Destiny did his hamstring and looks around the six week mark for him missing,” Postecoglou said on Friday ahead of the visit of Newcastle United in the Premier League.

“We lose Bentancur, suspended, none of the injured ones are back yet. We have had a bit of an illness bug through the squad as well so a few people have missed training but we will be all right.”

Postecoglou was non-committal when pressed on which players may miss the match due to illness before giving an update on other absentees.

Postecoglou’s side have undergone a defensive injury crisis in recent weeks with first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and central defenders Cristian Romero and Micky Van de Ven all injured alongside Ben Davies, who can deputise at both left-back and centre-back.

“At this stage, Richy and Mikey Moore are the next two cabs off the rank,” Postecoglou said. “Hopefully next week at some point. Ben (Davies), Micky van de Ven and (Cristian) Romero are all around the same time, the back end of January they are slated to return.”

In Udogie’s absence for the recent 3-6 Premier League home defeat to Liverpool, Djed Spence — whose preferred position is right-back — deputised at left-back, with Reguilon and Davies the other options in Postecoglou’s squad.

The defeat to Liverpool was the only match of Tottenham’s 19 league games to date in 2023-24 in which Udogie has not started.

The Athletic reported in the January Transfer DealSheet that Spurs would look to recruit this month if their injury list did not clear up.

Spurs return to action with a Premier League home match against Newcastle United on January 4 before host Liverpool in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi final four days later.

‘A huge blow’

Udogie’s latest injury is a huge blow for Postecoglou who will now have to cope without three of his first-choice back four as well as goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario for a crucial run of fixtures that includes Saturday’s clash with Newcastle United and the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie against Liverpool.

It will provide Djed Spence with another opportunity to show his quality. Spence joined Spurs from Middlesbrough in July 2022 but only made his first start for them in last month’s 5-0 victory over Southampton. The 24-year-old is comfortable playing on the left or the right and is a threat going forward — he has registered two assists in his last four appearances in all competitions.

Spence missed Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with Wolves after being sent off for two bookable offences in their 1-0 defeat to his former club Nottingham Forest on December 26. He will be available against Newcastle after serving a one-match ban.

Udogie’s absence will impact Sergio Reguilon too. Reguilon is not a part of Postecoglou’s long-term plans and has made only two substitute appearances this season. He has entered the final six months of his deal and can sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs. With Udogie the latest defender to be injured though, it is probably best if Reguilon sticks around to provide cover in the next couple of months.

Tottenham Hotspur fans were dealt a double blow today as it was revealed that star midfielder Destiny Udogie will be sidelined for the next six weeks with a hamstring injury. The young talent has been a key player for the team this season, and his absence will surely be felt on the pitch.

To make matters worse, the Tottenham squad has also been hit by an illness bug, with several players reporting symptoms of fever and fatigue. This comes at a crucial time for the team, with important matches coming up in both domestic and European competitions.

Manager Antonio Conte will now have to navigate through a challenging period without one of his best players and with a depleted squad. Fans will be hoping for a swift recovery for Udogie and for the rest of the squad to recover quickly from their illnesses.

It’s a tough break for Tottenham, but they will need to rally together and show their resilience in the face of adversity. The team will need to dig deep and find ways to overcome these challenges in order to stay competitive in their upcoming matches.

Pakistan opener Saim Ayub has been ruled out of the ongoing Newlands Test with an ankle injury. The 22-year-old twisted his right ankle while fielding on the opening day of the second Test between South Africa and Pakistan, and the timeline for his recovery remains uncertain.

“Saim Ayub has been ruled out of further participation in the second men’s cricket Test against South Africa after twisting his right ankle while fielding,” the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said in a release. “Saim underwent X-rays and MRI tests this afternoon and the reports have been sent to specialists in London for further advice on the treatment and time away from competitive cricket.”

The injury happened in the seventh over, when Ryan Rickelton squeezed an outside edge between gully and backward point. Both Aamer Jamal and Saim Ayub gave chase; and while Jamal slid and flicked the ball back in, Ayub slipped and hurt his ankle. He looked in pain, having called for the physio immediately and needing to be helped off the field a little later. He was later spotted in a cast and was replaced in the field by Abdullah Shafique.

Ayub’s injury added to a difficult day in the field for Pakistan, who were at the receiving end of twin tons from Rickelton (176*) and Temba Bavuma (106).

Injury Scare For Pakistan As Saim Ayub Stretchered Off In Second Test vs South Africa

Pakistan suffered an injury scare at the start of the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town on Friday after opener Saim Ayub was stretchered off following injuring his ankle. The severity of Ayub’s injury remains unclear, but he has been taken to the hospital for treatment. On the field, he was unable to bear weight on his right ankle and appeared visibly distressed, even shedding tears after the incident. The injury occurred in the seventh over when Ryan Rickelton edged a ball through the slips, prompting Ayub to chase it to deep third alongside Aamer Jamal. As Jamal pulled the ball back, Ayub, positioned as the relay fielder, lost his balance and twisted his ankle. He immediately went down, clutching his lower leg in pain as the physio rushed to assist.

After receiving prolonged treatment near the boundary, Ayub was stretchered off, casting a shadow over Pakistan’s efforts. The situation worsened shortly after when Ayub’s replacement, Abdullah Shafique, dropped a straightforward chance at cover to dismiss Aiden Markram. Fortunately, Markram was removed by Khurram Shahzad two overs later, but celebrations remained subdued, reflecting the impact of Ayub’s absence.

Ayub’s loss is a significant blow to Pakistan. A breakout star in recent months, he was Player of the Series in Pakistan’s 3-0 ODI triumph over South Africa last month, scoring two centuries in three matches. As one of Pakistan’s few all-format regulars, Ayub is a key player, particularly with the Champions Trophy just weeks away in February.

Earlier, Temba Bavuma won the toss and opted to bat first as the hosts lead the series 1-0 and have already booked a spot in the World Test Championship (WTC) final after securing a thrilling two-wicket win in Centurion.

Ayub, who was batting at the time, appeared to be in considerable pain after facing a delivery from South African bowler Lungi Ngidi. The medical team rushed onto the field to assess the situation and it was decided that Ayub needed to be stretchered off for further evaluation.

The incident has left Pakistan fans worried about the extent of Ayub’s injury and the impact it could have on the team’s performance in the match. Ayub, who has shown promise in his short career so far, was expected to play a key role in Pakistan’s batting lineup.

As the match continues, all eyes will be on updates regarding Ayub’s condition and the hope that he will make a quick recovery. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

SA vs Pak 2024 – Pakistan opener Saim Ayub ruled out of Cape Town Test after suffering ankle injury

Ayub had to be stretchered off the pitch in just the seventh over of the match, when Ryan Rickelton edged a delivery through the slips, sending Ayub off on a chase to deep third alongside Aamer Jamal. Jamal pulled it back in as Ayub stood poised to be the relay fielder, but lost his balance and twisted his ankle. He went down immediately and appeared in anguish holding the lower part of his leg as the physio rushed on.

Despite prolonged treatment outside the boundary line, Ayub was unable to put any weight on his right ankle, and appeared to be in tears as he was placed on to a stretcher and taken off, with the injury casting a pall over proceedings for Pakistan. Things only got worse a few overs later when his replacement, Abdullah Shafique, put down a simple chance Aiden Markram at cover. It would not cost Pakistan much, though, with Markram falling to Khurram Shahzad two overs later.

Ayub was sent to hospital soon after the incident, and shortly after the close of play, the PCB confirmed he would play no further part in the contest. “Saim underwent X-rays and MRI tests this afternoon,” the statement read. “The reports have been sent to specialists in London for further advice on the treatment and time away from competitive cricket.”

Ayub has been a breakout star across formats over the last few months, and was Player of the Series when Pakistan beat South Africa 3-0 in the ODI series last month, scoring two hundreds in three games.

He is one of the few all-format regulars for Pakistan, and was expected to be a key figure for the side in the upcoming Champions Trophy that Pakistan will host, beginning in February. That participation may now be in serious doubt.

“It’s a big blow, the kind of form he’s in,” Salman Agha, Ayub’s team-mate, said at the close of play. “He would have been a great asset on this wicket. I wish him well and hopefully he’ll be better soon.”

In a major blow to the Pakistan cricket team, opener Saim Ayub has been ruled out of the upcoming Test match against South Africa in Cape Town after suffering an ankle injury. The young batsman, who made his Test debut earlier this year, had been in good form and was expected to play a key role in the series against the Proteas.

Ayub’s absence will be a big loss for Pakistan as they look to bounce back from their recent series defeat against Australia. The team will now have to find a replacement for the talented opener and will be hoping for a quick recovery for Ayub.

The Cape Town Test is set to be a crucial match for both teams, with South Africa looking to continue their dominance at home and Pakistan aiming to prove their worth in overseas conditions. The absence of Ayub will certainly be felt, but the team will be looking to rally together and put up a strong performance in his absence.

Kawhi Leonard injury update: Clippers star expected to make season debut Saturday vs. Hawks, per report

Kawhi Leonard is expected to make his season debut for the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday when they host the Atlanta Hawks, according to NBA Insider Chris Haynes. The team upgraded him to questionable on Friday night.

Leonard, who has been suffering from inflammation in his right knee, has been playing full-contact 5-on-5 in practice since Dec. 18, but the Clippers wanted to see him get more scrimmages in before bringing him back, coach Tyronn Lue told reporters.

Three months ago, team president Lawrence Frank said that, while the swelling in Leonard’s knee was almost gone, they wanted to be cautious. Last season, Leonard played in 68 of the Clippes’ first 74 games, then missed their last eight because of inflammation in his knee. He tried to come back during their first-round series against the Dallas Mavericks, but his knee didn’t respond as well as they’d hoped it would. This time, they wanted to make sure that he doesn’t wind up in a similar situation.

“I know he doesn’t like to play 5-on-5 a lot outside of the games, but this is very important to the medical staff, to Lawrence, to our group as well,” Lue said. “Just making sure he’s getting the right amount of reps, making sure he’s doing everything so this doesn’t occur again. so we can kind of monitor the fluid and see how it’s working. So far, it’s been really good, and we just want to continue to keep progressing.”

If Leonard indeed comes back on Saturday, he will have missed the Clippers’ first 34 games of the season. The Clippers have gone 19-15 (tied in the loss column with the No. 6 Mavericks) without Leonard thanks in large part to their top-five defense.

Their offense, however, ranks in the bottom 10. James Harden’s usage rate is the highest it has been since 2019-20, but he has told reporters that he’s not worried about his role changing when Leonard comes back.

“It’s funny, me and Kawhi talked about that a little bit on the bench today,” Harden said after the Clippers’ 102-92 win against the Golden State Warriors, via ClutchPoints’ Tomer Azarly, on Dec. 27. “Whenever his return is, we just talked about [it], and I just said, ‘Just work your way in,’ you know what I mean? ‘Cause he feels like he doesn’t want to just come over and just mess up the flow and the chemistry that we have been building up, but I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. Like, I’ve been in every situation in a sense of like being the main guy, having to take [a step back]. So I think, for our aggressiveness and our team, we’re going to still play the same way. It’s just we got another unique weapon on both ends of the floor, so it’s definitely a bonus for us.”

In 2023-24, Leonard made the All-NBA Second Team and averaged 23.7 points on 62.6% true shooting, plus 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.9 blocks in 34.3 minutes.

Kawhi Leonard injury update: Clippers star expected to make season debut Saturday vs. Hawks, per report

According to a recent report, Los Angeles Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard is expected to make his season debut on Saturday against the Atlanta Hawks. Leonard has been sidelined with a foot injury since the start of the season, but it appears he is finally ready to return to the court.

Fans and teammates alike have been eagerly awaiting Leonard’s return, as he is considered one of the best players in the NBA. His presence on the court is sure to provide a significant boost to the Clippers, who have been struggling to find consistency in his absence.

It will be interesting to see how Leonard performs in his first game back, as he will likely be looking to make a statement and remind everyone why he is considered one of the top players in the league. Stay tuned for more updates on Leonard’s return and how it impacts the Clippers’ season moving forward.

On Dec. 27, Leonard posted a cryptic video that seemed to indicate his return would come soon.

Law Murray of The Athletic then reported that the Clippers were targeting Jan. 4 at home against the Atlanta Hawks for Leonard’s return to the court.

Right knee inflammation forced Leonard to miss the final eight regular-season games of the 2023-24 season as well as four of the Clippers’ six first-round playoff games against the Dallas Mavericks.

Leonard suffered a torn right ACL in the 2021 postseason that forced him to sit all of 2021-22. He also suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee during the playoffs against the Phoenix Suns. Thankfully, he was ready for the 2023-24 season opener.

Leonard is an immensely talented player with six All-Star recognitions, six All-NBA team honors, seven All-Defensive teams, two NBA championships and two NBA Finals MVP awards to his name. He averaged 23.7 points on 52.5 percent shooting, 6.1 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.6 steals last year. So obviously, the Clippers need him to have a chance at a championship run.

Without him, though, James Harden has still adeptly run the offense, with Norman Powell breaking out to lead the team in scoring.

Exciting NBA news for fans as Kawhi Leonard is set to make his return from a knee injury for the Los Angeles Clippers in their upcoming game against the Atlanta Hawks. The star player’s comeback is highly anticipated and is sure to provide a major boost for the Clippers as they look to secure a win. How long is Kawhi Leonard out? Knee injury timeline, return date, latest updates for Clippers star

The Clippers began the season without Kawhi Leonard, a familiar but unwelcome sight for fans. A solid start, however, allowed the franchise to take its time working the veteran back into the fold.

The Clippers have remained steady in the Western Conference playoff picture despite plenty of talented teams around them, with Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac stepping up next to a refreshed James Harden. LA hopes Leonard can get back on the court soon and help the team find a new gear.

How much time will Leonard miss and what does it mean for the Clippers? Here is the latest on his recovery.

What is Kawhi Leonard’s injury?

Leonard is dealing with inflammation in his right knee, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania and Ohm Youngmisuk. Leonard’s designation on the NBA’s official injury report is “right knee injury management.”

The issue plagued Leonard to close the 2023-24 season, limited him during the 2024 NBA Playoffs, prevented him from playing in the Olympics and kept him from participating during training camp and the preseason.

Leonard last played in an NBA game on April 26, 2024, Game 3 of LA’s first-round playoff loss to Dallas.

Before the injury setback, the 2023-24 season was a big one for Leonard. Over 68 games, he averaged 23.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists while shooting 52.5 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from 3-point range.

How long is Kawhi Leonard out?

Leonard is targeting a return date of Jan. 4 against the Hawks, The Athletic’s Law Murray reported.

In late December, Leonard posted a video in collaboration with New Balance on his YouTube channel teasing his return titled, “Kawhi Leonard The Return.”

“There’s been good days, there’s been bad days, but I keep coming back,” Leonard said.

Leonard was reported by Shams Charania to be “out indefinitely” at the start of the season, measured in weeks rather than days, and his absence ultimately lasted multiple months.

Updates on Leonard’s recovery were initially limited, but he started appearing at practice in December and ramping up in anticipation of a potential return.

LA Clippers upcoming schedule 2024

The Clippers will go on the road to Minnesota and Denver after facing the Hawks on Jan. 4, but they don’t play a back-to-back until Jan. 15 and 16.

NBA Fans React to Kawhi Leonard Injury News Before Hawks-Clippers

The Los Angeles Clippers watched the Kawhi Leonard and Paul George era end this past offseason, as George opted not to resign in LA and instead signed a four-year contract to team up with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey on the Philadelphia 76ers. Factor in Leonard being removed from Team USA due to injury, and some believed Clippers fans didn’t have much to look forward to this season.

Despite this, the Clippers have been able to rally around their veterans James Harden, Norman Powell, and Ivica Zubac to stay well in the playoff mix as a top-six seed. With the calendar year switching to 2025, Clippers fans were optimistic that Saturday would provide the chance for a Leonard season debut against the Atlanta Hawks.

Initially, the Clippers reported that would not be the case, as Leonard was ruled out for Saturday night’s game at the Inuit Dome.

The star forward was listed out with right knee injury recovery.

Then in an official update from the team, Leonard was upgraded to questionable.

This is usually a sign that a player is planning to return.

Clippers fans have been on quite the emotional rollercoaster, and have been reacting to this news on X.

“Goat back league is trembling,” a fan commented.

“AHHHHH LETS GOOOO,” a fan added.

“LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOO,” a fan said.

“LETS GET WEIRD KLAW,” another fan wrote.

As can be seen, fans are feeling a range of emotions as they wait for their All-NBA forward to finally return to the court. Given the Clippers have been very careful in this process, fans are optimistic that when he returns, it will be for the foreseeable future.
