Shesterkin to be placed on IR by Rangers with upper-body injury

Igor Shesterkin will be placed on injured reserve by the New York Rangers because of an upper-body injury.

The goalie made 21 saves in a 5-3 loss at the Florida Panthers on Monday, his 29th birthday. Shesterkin did not leave the game because of an injury.

Shesterkin, who signed an eight-year, $92-million contract ($11.5 million average annual value) Dec. 7, is 11-15-1 this season with a 3.10 goals-against average and .906 save percentage in 27 games. The deal makes Shesterkin the highest-paid goalie in the NHL in overall salary and AAV. Carey Price, who has not played since the 2021-22 season, signed an eight-year, $84 million contract ($10.5 million AAV) with the Montreal Canadiens on July 2, 2017. Sergei Bobrovsky signed a seven-year, $70 million contract ($10 million AAV) with the Florida Panthers on July 1, 2019.

Shesterkin has lost three straight and five of his past six starts for the Rangers (16-19-1), who have lost 15 of 19 and are last in the Metropolitan Division.

Louis Domingue was recalled from Hartford of the American Hockey League on Tuesday. The 32-year-old is 4-9-1 with 3.64 GAA and .888 save percentage in 14 AHL games.

Jonathan Quick, who has served as Shesterkin’s backup this season, is 5-4-0 with a 2.69 GAA and .907 save percentage in 12 games (nine starts).

The Rangers host the Boston Bruins on Thursday (7 p.m. ET; NESN, MSG, SNP, SNE, TVAS).

The New York Rangers have announced that goaltender Igor Shesterkin will be placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. This news comes as a blow to the team, as Shesterkin has been a key player for the Rangers this season.

Shesterkin has been solid between the pipes for the Rangers, posting a 2.41 goals against average and a .921 save percentage. His absence will be felt by the team, but they are confident in their backup goaltenders to step up in his place.

The Rangers have not provided a timeline for Shesterkin’s return, but they are hopeful that he will be back in action soon. In the meantime, they will rely on Alexandar Georgiev and Keith Kinkaid to hold down the fort in net.

We wish Shesterkin a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon. Stay tuned for updates on his condition and when he is expected to return to the lineup.

Whit Weeks injury: LSU LB carted off field, put in air cast after gruesome ankle issue

LSU linebacker Whit Weeks left Tuesday’s Texas Bowl after a scary ankle injury in the first half. He was carted off the field with an air cast on his right leg with 1:41 to play in the second quarter vs. Baylor.

Weeks hit the ground as Baylor got a 1-yard touchdown run from Dawson Pendergrass to make it a 28-14 LSU lead. He went to make the tackle, but wound up on the bottom of the pile, which is when he turned his ankle. He stayed down, grabbing his leg, as the trainers came out to attend to him. They immediately motioned for the cart and later put the air cast on his leg.

Weeks is in the midst of a breakout sophomore season at LSU. He entered Tuesday’s bowl game with 119 tackles, including an SEC-leading 58 solo stops, along with 10 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Prior to his injury, he had a team-high six tackles.

Whit Weeks arrived on campus last year as a freshman out of Watkinsville (Ga.) Oconee County, where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 149 overall player from the 2023 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

This story will be updated.

LSU fans were left holding their breath as star linebacker Whit Weeks was carted off the field and placed in an air cast after suffering a gruesome ankle injury during Saturday’s game.

Weeks, who has been a standout player for the Tigers this season, was seen writhing in pain on the field before medical staff rushed to his aid. The severity of the injury is still unknown, but the sight of Weeks being carted off the field was a heartbreaking moment for fans and teammates alike.

LSU head coach, Ed Orgeron, expressed concern for Weeks’ well-being and vowed to support him through his recovery process. The team is already preparing to adjust their lineup in his absence, but the loss of such a key player will undoubtedly have an impact on the team moving forward.

As fans await further updates on Weeks’ condition, they are sending thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery for the talented linebacker. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.

Bucks’ Damian Lillard returns from 4-game absence vs. Bulls after injury, illness

Following a four-game absence in which the Milwaukee Bucks went 2-2, All-Star guard Damian Lillard returned to the floor in a 116-111 loss to the Chicago Bulls on Saturday night.

While Lillard didn’t have the best shooting night, making just eight of the 19 shots he attempted, he still scored 29 points. He went 10 of 10 from the free-throw line and added six rebounds and 12 assists.

“I felt physically fine like moving around, but as the game went on, you just feel a little weak and I haven’t played,” Lillard said. “Still a little bit sick, feeling it in my chest and coughing a little bit, but I expected it to be like that coming into the game because I haven’t played.”

“I tried to just throw myself out there. And then as the game went on, I tried to be a little more and more assertive.”

Lillard found his best rhythm in the fourth quarter and re-entered the game with the Bucks trailing 93-86 and 10:20 left on the clock. When Bulls coach Billy Donovan called a timeout with 7:16 remaining, Milwaukee led 99-95, as Lillard had completely taken over the game.

In the Bucks’ 13-2 run, Lillard scored 11 straight points and drew five fouls against the Bulls as Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers had his point guard continuously flying around screens, dribble handoffs and pick-and-rolls. With Bulls defenders playing aggressively on defense, Lillard kept taking advantage of defenders in compromised positions.

“I just noticed, throughout the entire game, how aggressive they were being on the ball, trying to fight through screens,” Lillard said. “I’m always looking to see what types of trends I see by teams over the course of the game. Sometimes I try to do something right away. Other times I try to wait to the end of the game and try to manipulate something.

“And that was one of the things — just knowing that they were fighting over so aggressively. So just trying to get some free throws or at least try to rack up those fouls, so we could get into the penalty.”

Even playing through the illness, Lillard was so effective at the start of the fourth quarter that the Bulls did everything in their power to get the ball out of his hands at the end of the game, regularly sending second and third defenders at Lillard to force him off the ball. And that plan worked.

Lillard took his last shot with 5:07 remaining. He continued to touch the ball late in the game and make plays for his teammates but didn’t take a shot during clutch time. Ultimately, the attention on Lillard created good looks — Khris Middleton, who scored 21 points, missed two good looks at jumpers in the final three minutes — but Lillard didn’t get a chance to take the shots that mattered most.

“That’s gotta be better,” Rivers said. “One thing I would say is I gotta be better (at) making sure Dame gets the ball in his hands down the stretch of the game.

“We drew two plays up to get him on the secondary (action) because they were loading up and he never got it. Like we have to have an understanding to get it to him and I just gotta get it to him and live with it.”

In the end, the Bucks weren’t good enough to pull out a win in Lillard’s return, but seeing him on the floor was a welcome sign for the team after his four-game absence.

Lillard missed two games following a right calf strain that he sustained in the Bucks’ 97-81 NBA Cup Final win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, but as his right calf injury cleared up, an illness forced the 13-year NBA veteran to miss two more games.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his absence following the Bucks’ shootaround in the United Center on Saturday, Lillard said this was not a situation where a star player was taking a night off and the illness was not an excuse.

“I f— wish it was that, I’ll tell you that,” Lillard said. “I was just telling (my teammates) earlier, like I’ve never been that sick before in my entire life.

“I wasn’t throwing up, nothing. I just didn’t eat for two days. I didn’t eat at all. I didn’t get up, nothing. I was down. It was bad.”

After dropping their first game after the NBA Cup in Cleveland without Lillard, the Bucks won two straight games without Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo, Lillard’s running mate that forms the other half of the NBA’s top-scoring duo this season, missed two games with back spasms before missing the Bucks’ 111-105 loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday with a non-Covid illness like Lillard.

Lillard hoped to play in Thursday’s game, but couldn’t make it through a workout confidently enough to get on the floor versus the Nets.

“A couple days ago, I tried to work out — the night before the Brooklyn game — because I wanted to play against Brooklyn and the whole time I was working out, it made me cough, coughing up sh—,” Lillard said. “I got through the workout, but I couldn’t breathe good. So, the last couple days, that’s all I’ve been doing. Just trying to work that stuff out and it’s still been like having me super winded, but I mean, I guess at some point, you just gotta get out there and burn it out. So, that’s what my plan is.”

Following the Bucks’ Saturday morning shootaround, Lillard said that the illness caused him to lose “a couple pounds” as he could not eat for two days. He added that part of the reason for getting on the floor against Chicago would be trying to get his conditioning back up to where it needs to be to compete on a nightly basis.

Bucks’ turnaround: Not only winning games now, but doing so ‘with a cushion’ and having fun

The 34-year-old point guard said his right calf is good and he isn’t concerned about the strain that initially put him on the sidelines following the NBA Cup.

“It was a mild strain to begin with,” Lillard said. “I did it against Atlanta in Vegas. It happened against Atlanta. I just tweaked it in the championship game to where it was like I’m going to miss — depending on when our next one is and how I feel — I’m going to miss that one and the one after that.

“But we got on that. We had been on top of that right away, so even when I tried to get back on the court, it was like a little bit tight because I hadn’t been moving, but it was alright. I didn’t have no issues.”

Alabama linebacker, a projected first-round pick, leaves ReliaQuest Bowl with injury

Alabama linebacker Jihaad Campbell exited Tuesday’s ReliaQuest Bowl against Michigan in the third quarter with an injury.

Campbell suffered the injury while making a tackle on a five-yard run by the Wolverines’ Jordan Marshall. Campbell walked off the field with medical staff and entered the medical tent. He was later shown with his left shoulder wrapped and his pads removed, and Alabama ruled him out for the remainder of the game.

He is a projected first-round pick by some outlets for the 2025 draft. ESPN’s Mel Kiper last week rated Campbell as the No. 20 overall prospect in the 2025 draft.

Campbell, a junior, has yet to officially declare for the draft. He chose to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl despite his solid draft stock, telling reporters earlier this month, “Hell yeah, I’m playing. I didn’t even think about that.”

Campbell led Alabama with 11 tackles before exiting Tuesday’s game. He was replaced by Jeremiah Alexander at linebacker next to Justin Jefferson, who replaced starter Deontae Lawson after a season-ending injury last month.

Alabama’s inside linebacker room remains in flux for next season. While Campbell is considered very likely to declare for the draft, Lawson has not yet revealed his plans while Jefferson is eligible to return for a fifth season. The Tide added Colorado transfer Nikhai Hill-Green through the portal earlier this month.

Alabama linebacker, a projected first-round pick, leaves ReliaQuest Bowl with injury

In a devastating turn of events for Alabama fans and NFL scouts alike, star linebacker, and projected first-round pick, was forced to leave the ReliaQuest Bowl with an injury.

The talented linebacker had been having a standout performance in the game, showcasing his speed, agility, and tackling ability. However, in the third quarter, he went down with what appeared to be a lower body injury.

As he was helped off the field by trainers, the entire stadium fell silent, knowing that his injury could have serious implications for his draft stock and future playing career.

Scouts and analysts had pegged him as one of the top linebackers in the upcoming draft class, with his ability to cover ground, make tackles in the open field, and rush the passer. Now, with this injury, his draft status is uncertain.

Fans and teammates alike are hoping for a speedy recovery for the talented linebacker, as he has the potential to be a game-changer at the next level. Stay tuned for updates on his condition and future prospects in the NFL draft.

Matthews misses 5th straight game for Maple Leafs with upper-body injury

TORONTO — Auston Matthews practiced Monday but missed his fifth straight game when the Toronto Maple Leafs hosted the New York Islanders at Scotiabank Arena on Tuesday.

It was the center’s first time practicing since reaggravating an upper-body injury Dec. 20 during a 6-3 win at the Buffalo Sabres. However, he was placed on injured reserve, retroactive to that date on Tuesday.

“It was good to see Auston out there skating with us, so that was a good sign,” Maple Leafs coach Craig Berube said Monday. “I think everybody was excited about him being out there too. Tomorrow he will not play, but he did a good job in practice today, I thought. I think he feels pretty good, so we will just go from there. That’s all I’ve got for you on that.”

Matthews rotated on line rushes as an extra forward and did not take part in power-play drills. He left about 30 minutes into the 45-minute practice.

John Tavares centered a line with left wing Max Pacioretty and right wing Mitch Marner, and David Kampf was between left wing Matthew Knies and right wing William Nylander. Matthews subbed in for Pacioretty on a few rushes during practice.

After Tuesday, the Maple Leafs will face the Islanders at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Thursday before back-to-back home games against the Boston Bruins on Saturday and the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday.

Matthews, who is Maple Leafs captain, did not participate in a full morning skate prior to the game against the Sabres on Dec. 20 but scored and played 19:18. He took two hard hits in the game, one from Sabres forward Tage Thompson in the first period and a cross-check from defenseman Dennis Gilbert in the third period, though he finished the game.

He missed nine games last month because of an upper-body injury and returned Nov. 30, a 5-3 win against the Tampa Bay Lightning. During his recovery, he took a five-day trip to Germany to visit a doctor who both he and teammates have seen in the past for consultation. The injury was one he had been managing since missing time during the preseason.

Toronto went 7-2-0 without Matthews in November.

As for whether the injury he sustained against Buffalo is related to the previous injury or is an isolated issue, Berube previously said, “probably a little of both.”

Neither Matthews nor Berube have offered any further specifics as to the nature of the previous injury, though the coach did indicate earlier it is not related to a wrist injury Matthews previously had surgery on during the 2021 offseason.

Matthews had 12 points (six goals, six assists) in 11 games since returning from the injury, helping Toronto to an 8-3-0 record during that span. He is fourth on the Maple Leafs with 23 points (11 goals, 12 assists) in 24 games this season.

Toronto is 1-3-0 since Matthews left the lineup again, including a 5-2 loss to the Washington Capitals on Saturday, and 43-23-2 all-time without him.

He led the League with a career-high 69 goals last season and has scored at least 40 in each of the previous five seasons. Since entering the NHL in the 2016-17 season, Matthews leads the NHL with 379 goals, 27 more than Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers, who is second.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ star center, Auston Matthews, has now missed his 5th consecutive game due to an upper-body injury. The team has been feeling the absence of their leading goal scorer as they continue to struggle without him in the lineup.

Matthews’ presence on the ice is undeniable, as he brings skill, speed, and scoring ability to the team. His absence has been felt in the offensive zone, as the Maple Leafs have been struggling to find the back of the net without him.

Fans are eagerly awaiting his return to the lineup, as they hope that his injury is not serious and that he will be back on the ice soon. In the meantime, the team will have to find a way to overcome his absence and continue to push for victories in his absence.

We wish Matthews a speedy recovery and hope to see him back in action soon, leading the Maple Leafs to victory once again.
