Injury won’t ruin Scheffler’s winning recipe
There’s no reason to think Scottie Scheffler, shown here during The Showdown in December, will do anything but light it up when he returns. Kevin C. Cox, Getty Images PEBBLE BEACH, CALIFORNIA | The sun was beginning its slow drift down Tuesday afternoon, adding a chill to the air as Scottie Scheffler went about his business on the practice tee at Pebble Beach Golf Links.
Scheffler would launch another ball into the distance, watch it turn softly to the left, study the numbers of the launch monitor sitting nearby then wipe down the club, sometimes using the little wire brush clipped to a belt loop, then repeat the process.
Every few swings, Scheffler would change clubs, engage in some small talk with the people gathered around his golf bag, then get back to it, gradually peeling two long dirt paths into the emerald green turf.
The small piece of tape covering the injury he suffered to his right hand on Christmas Day wasn’t visible and Scheffler said there are no lingering effects other than postponing his 2025 debut to this week.
As for the injury heard ’round the golf world, here’s what happened and, fair warning, it might produce a cringe.
Scheffler and his family were making homemade ravioli in a rental house during a holiday getaway. Without a proper tool to cut the pasta, Scheffler turned a wine glass upside down to do the job. When he pushed on the bottom of the glass, the stem broke and the jagged remains punctured his hand, just below his middle finger.
“I’ve heard nothing but horror stories since this happened about wine glasses, so be careful. Even if you’re like me and you don’t drink wine, you’ve got to be real careful with wine glasses,” Scheffler said.
A surgeon friend was with Scheffler and stopped the bleeding but Scheffler knew something wasn’t right.
“I knew I kind of messed something up just because the way my hand wasn’t really moving much and if I did, it hurt pretty bad. So I kind of knew something was up,” Scheffler said.
When he got back to Dallas, Scheffler had a minor surgical procedure and all was good again with no long-term effects.
It has been nearly five months since Scheffler won the FedEx Cup at East Lake and the only events he has played since have been the Presidents Cup, a televised match with McIlroy against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka and the Hero World Challenge in December. Win, win, win.
Told that Rory McIlroy suggested Scheffler has won enough money to afford a chef, he didn’t miss a beat.
“I’ve got a chef, her name’s Meredith (his wife). She’s pretty cute,” Scheffler said smiling.
It has been nearly five months since Scheffler won the FedEx Cup at East Lake and the only events he has played since have been the Presidents Cup, a televised match with McIlroy against Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka and the Hero World Challenge in December.
Win, win, win.
That’s 11 wins in 2024, seven official PGA Tour victories, the gold medal in Paris and his three others. Little wonder all eyes will be on Scheffler when he tees it up Thursday morning in the second signature event of the new season.
McIlroy marvels at what Scheffler has done.
Rory McIlroy (right) says of Scheffler: “He just doesn’t make mistakes.” Kevin C. Cox, Getty Images “This is anyone, this is Tiger, this is in the history of golf. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a golfer play as many bogey-free rounds as Scottie. He just doesn’t make mistakes. It’s so impressive. He plays the right shot at the right time over and over and over again,” McIlroy said.
Other than his extended break – Scheffler traditionally plays the Sentry at Kapalua and the American Express to gauge his readiness for the season – there is no reason to expect Scheffler to suddenly develop a case of mediocrity.
The most noticeable change is the possibility Scheffler will add a tournament he doesn’t typically play sometime in early spring, though he didn’t offer any specifics.
His success has been built on hard work, an abundance of athletic talent and a resolute belief in himself. None of those things have changed.
Unable to practice or work out for a time after the injury, Scheffler watched replays of his play last year, focusing not on the finishes but more often on how he got himself into a position to win. If it’s possible to study patience, that’s what Scheffler does.
He studied how he looked and the shots he hit. No commentary. No other players. A clinical evaluation of his holistic approach to golf.
“There’s a few tournaments I looked back at where the thing that stuck out the most was that I never really overreacted to stuff, I kind of stayed in it and kind of waited for my moment to get hot. Sometimes I got hot, was able to get up the leaderboard and win. Other times I didn’t and I still had a decent finish,” Scheffler said.
“You look at Players (which Scheffler won) as an example, maybe the Olympics as one where you’re able to come from behind. Sometimes the little things go your way and sometimes they don’t.” – Scottie Scheffler
After being cleared by doctors to go full speed, Scheffler spent last week grinding in the cold at home in Dallas. Every day his hand improved and he spent his first two days on the Monterey Peninsula playing Cypress Point with his caddie Ted Scott then making a basket of birdies in a Tuesday practice round with his buddy Sam Burns at Pebble Beach.
Scheffler has won the PGA Tour’s player of the year trophy the past three years, steadily stretching the margin between himself and everyone else. The difference in 2023 when Scheffler won three times (counting the Hero World Challenge) and last year came down to Scheffler rarely making mistakes and playing his best at critical moments like the closing 29 he shot to win the gold medal.
“Sometimes those little breaks fall your way where the guys at the top struggle and I’m able to kind of get into the tournament. You look at Players (which Scheffler won) as an example, maybe the Olympics as one where you’re able to come from behind. Sometimes the little things go your way and sometimes they don’t,” Scheffler said.
Grinding away late on a Tuesday afternoon, surrounded by the splendor of the Monterey Peninsula, Scheffler was intent on leaving as little as possible to chance.

Despite facing adversity, Scheffler stayed focused and committed to his game, showcasing his winning recipe of talent, hard work, and mental fortitude.Injury setbacks can often derail a player's momentum and confidence, but Scheffler refused to let it hold him back. Instead, he used it as motivation to push himself even harder and prove that he is a force to be reckoned with on the golf course.
Scheffler's ability to stay composed under pressure and deliver exceptional performances, even in the face of adversity, is a testament to his skill and mental toughness. Real Madrid’s injury woes may have gotten worse with Champions League clash vs. Manchester City looming
Getty Images
Real Madrid have dealt with numerous injuries lately, but with defender Antonio Rudiger needing to be subbed out in the 15th minute of their match facing Espanyol on Saturday, manager Carlo Ancelotti will be sweating. The German defender appeared to suffer a hamstring injury before being withdrawn from the match where he was replaced by young defender Raul Ascencio.
Rudiger seemed to feel discomfort while defending a cross before coming out after being examined by the physios.
Already starting Aurelien Tchouameni at center back due to Eder Militao being absent with an ACL injury of his own, this could put Madrid’s defensive corps in quite a tight spot with big games on the horizon. Not only is there a top-of-the-table clash in the Madrid derby with Atletico Madrid on Feb. 8, but in quick succession, Los Blancos will head to Manchester for the first leg of the Champions League knockout round playoffs against Manchester City.
Real Madrid expect to win the Champions League each year, not just make it to the round of 16, but if Rudiger isn’t ready for the first leg on Feb. 11, they’ll struggle to track Erling Haaland and make it out with a victory.
Rudiger’s physicality and mastery of the dark arts to get into the head of his opponents is something unmatched by other defenders in the world which is why he has become a mainstay in the Real Madrid defense. Of course, there’s always the chance that his withdrawal from the Espanyol match is just a precaution to make sure that he’s healthy for a busy February, but missing any time would come as a concern.
Real Madrid’s injury troubles seem to be mounting as they prepare to face off against Manchester City in the Champions League. The Spanish giants are already dealing with a number of key players sidelined due to injuries, including the likes of Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio, and Rodrygo. The latest blow comes in the form of Karim Benzema, who picked up a muscle injury during their La Liga clash against Levante. The French striker has been an instrumental player for Real Madrid this season, scoring crucial goals and providing a creative spark in the attack.
With Benzema’s availability for the upcoming Champions League fixture against Manchester City uncertain, Real Madrid will have to rely on their other attacking options to step up. Zinedine Zidane will likely turn to players like Vinicius Junior, Isco, and Luka Jovic to fill the void left by Benzema’s absence.
Facing a formidable opponent like Manchester City, Real Madrid will need all hands on deck to secure a positive result. The injury woes only add to the challenge for Zidane’s side, but they will have to dig deep and find a way to overcome the odds if they hope to advance in the Champions League.

Real Madrid Suffer Key Defensive Injury In First-Half Against Espanyol
Real Madrid suffered a key defensive injury against Espanyol after just 15 minutes of the crucial La Liga game.
Center-back Antonio Rudiger was forced off with what appeared to be a knee injury. Young Spaniard Raul Asencio replaced the German.
Rüdiger is holding his left knee.
— Madrid Xtra (@MadridXtra) February 1, 2025
Los Blancos players gathered around Rudiger with concern as he held his left leg. He was quickly replaced, which could be a long-term concern for Carlo Ancelotti.
David Alaba has just returned, but Ancelotti was already struggling in that area with Eder Militao out for the season.
The transfer window is still open until January 3, so if the tests come back tomorrow as a long-term concern, then Ancelotti may strike a last-minute deal to bring a player in at the position.

Real Madrid fans were left holding their breath as star defender Raphael Varane suffered a key defensive injury in the first half of their match against Espanyol.Varane went down clutching his leg after a collision with an Espanyol player, and had to be helped off the pitch by medical staff. The French international’s absence was immediately felt as Espanyol capitalized on the defensive lapse to score a goal.
The injury comes at a crucial time for Real Madrid, who are currently fighting for the La Liga title and have important matches coming up in the Champions League. Varane’s presence in the backline is crucial for the team’s defensive stability, and his absence will be sorely felt in the coming matches.
Fans are now anxiously awaiting updates on Varane’s condition and hoping for a speedy recovery. In the meantime, Real Madrid will have to regroup and find a way to cope without one of their key defensive players.

#Real #Madrid #Suffer #Key #Defensive #Injury #FirstHalf #EspanyolFinland’s Jani Hakanpaa pulls out of 4 Nations Face-Off due to injury
Team Finland’s blue line just took another hit.
The 32-year-old was set to represent Finland in less than two weeks at the inaugural best-on-best event but nagging knee problems have taken that opportunity away.
Hakanpaa has missed all but two games this season because of his injury and on Friday head coach Craig Berube made it clear that a return for the D-man in the coming days was already less than likely.
“Really, I don’t have a timeline for him. I really, I don’t,” Berube said when asked about Hakanpaa’s status, who hasn’t played since Nov. 16.
The 6-foot-6 defenceman signed with the Maple Leafs in September on a one-year, $1.47 million deal after three seasons with the Dallas Stars. He was originally drafted by the Anaheim Ducks in the fourth round of the 2010 Entry Draft. The Ducks traded Hakanpaa mid-way through his sophomore season and then he signed with Dallas that summer.
Hakanpaa has 45 points through 290 NHL games (15 goals, 30 assists).
His absence will be felt by Finland who are already down Hakanpaa’s former Stars’ teammate Miro Heiskanen. The defenceman is currently week-to-week with a lower-body injury due to an on-ice collision against the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday. He then pulled out from the tournament two days later.
The 4 Nations tournament runs Feb. 12-20 in Montreal and Boston. It’s the first international best-on-best tournament in nearly a decade.
Finnish defenseman Jani Hakanpaa has been forced to withdraw from the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament due to injury. Hakanpaa, who plays for the Anaheim Ducks in the NHL, was set to represent Finland in the international competition but will now have to sit out.The 29-year-old defenseman has been a key player for the Ducks this season, averaging over 18 minutes of ice time per game. His absence will surely be felt by the Finnish national team, as they look to compete against other top hockey nations in the tournament.
Hakanpaa’s injury is a blow to both his club team and his country, but hopefully, he will be able to recover quickly and get back on the ice soon. In the meantime, Finland will have to look to other players to step up and fill the void left by his absence in the 4 Nations Face-Off.

Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Jani Hakanpaa will not participate in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off for Finland due to injury.
Hakanpaa has skated in just two games for the Maple Leafs this season due to knee issues and has not played since mid-November.
The 32-year-old averaged 14:05 minutes of ice time and had two shots on goal, four blocked shots and one hit during those two contests.
In early December, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said that Hakanpaa had a “little procedure” done on his knee. Hakanpaa had undergone season-ending knee surgery last March as a member of the Dallas Stars.
More woes on blueline for Finland
Finland will need to add two replacements to its roster with Stars defenceman Miro Heiskanen, who was injured on Tuesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights, also ruled out as he is week to week with a lower-body injury.
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun wrote in The Athletic on Friday that while Heiskanen is off to see a specialist in New York on Monday for his lower-body injury, Stars general manager Jim Nill told LeBrun the team feels there’s a good chance the defenceman returns before the start of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
“We’re pretty optimistic,” Nill said Friday. “He had an MRI done, he saw our team doctor, he’s going to go see a specialist in New York on Monday. And we’ll get a better feel for things.”
The Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenceman Jani Hakanpaa has been ruled out of the upcoming 4 Nations tournament due to injury. Hakanpaa, who was set to represent Finland in the international competition, suffered the injury during a recent game with the Maple Leafs. The team has not disclosed the specific nature of Hakanpaa’s injury or the expected timeline for his return to play. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the ice soon.

#Toronto #Maple #Leafs #defenceman #Jani #Hakanpaa #ruled #Nations #injuryWalter Clayton Jr. injury update: Florida Gators star goes to locker room before halftime
Matt Pendleton-Imagn Images Florida star Walter Clayton Jr . went straight to the locker room with 1:07 to go in the first half of their game against Tennessee with an apparent injury.
Trailing 21-19, Clayton came back down after a shot and appeared to roll his left ankle. In a low scoring affair, the Gators could ill afford to lose one of their stars.
Tennessee led Florida 24-21 at halftime once the clocks hit all zeroes. Clayton was three-of-11 shooting, including two-of-eight from three-point land, for 10 points, one rebound and one steal.
He led all scorers during the game to that point.
Clayton’s been one of the best players in the country for a hot Florida team. He recently broke the school record for consecutive games with a made three-pointer.
With his first trey against the South Carolina Gamecocks earlier this month, Clayton broke UF’s record for consecutive games with a 3-pointer, breaking Michael Frazier II ’s mark of 41. Coincidentally, Frazier set Florida’s single-game 3-pointer record at South Carolina, hitting 11 in his 37-point performance on March 4, 2014.
Walter Clayton exits game with apparent injury
“I just learned about the streak, a couple of weeks ago when it 36, 37. I honestly can’t remember the last game (with no 3-pointer), 41 games, that’s what it was,” Clayton said of his streak at the time.
“I know to have my name with some of those other guys up there, they were great players. Obviously being a part of the Gators tradition. I’m happy about that. But just getting a win, that’s all that matters.”
Head coach Todd Golden was amazed by his player’s efforts.
“I’m just really proud of him for what he’s been able to accomplish, obviously, from an individual standpoint, but also the way he’s been able to lead us to, you know, the season we’re having,” Golden said of Clayton. “There were a lot of question marks around him in terms of, what is he going to be able to do? Is he gonna be able to take on this leadership role?
“Well, starting point guard for a top-five team in the country, and currently, being talked about as a second-team All-American, I think he’s doing a great job. His consistency and his competitiveness for us have been elite all year. He’s a guy that he makes you a better coach, being able to roll him out there every night and let him play with the freedom that he does.”

#Walter #Clayton #injury #update #Florida #Gators #star #locker #room #halftimeFlorida guard Walter Clayton Jr. returns in second half after suffering apparent ankle injury vs. Tennessee
UPDATE: Walter Clayton Jr. will attempt to give it a go in the second half, according to a UF spokesperson. The initial story is below:
The No. 5-ranked Florida Gators have been fortunate from an injury standpoint throughout the first 20 games of the 2024-25 regular season, yet UF’s luck took a turn for the worst in the first half of Saturday’s contest at Tennessee.
Facing an under-manned Volunteers team playing without standout guard Zakai Zeigler and forward Igor Milicic Jr., the Gators found themselves in a tight contest as the first half neared its conclusion, with leading scorer Walter Clayton Jr. accounting for 10 points to lead all scorers.
However, the senior guard had to be helped to the locker room after suffering an apparent ankle injury with 1:07 remaining in the first half. Clayton appeared to be in considerable pain as he was helped to Florida’s bench before departing for the locker room.
Having led by four midway through the first half, the Gators entered the locker room trailing to the Vols, 24-21.
Clayton, a Lake Wales native who spent his first two seasons of collegiate basketball at Iona, needs just two points to join UF’s 1,000-point club. A week ago, Will Richard’s game-winning shot with 4.8 seconds left in regulation at South Carolina gave him his 1,000th point as a Gator.
Ahead of UF’s contest at Tennessee, third-year Florida head coach Todd Golden discussed the potency of the Gators’ backcourt, saying their success was aided by the play of Florida’s frontcourt.
“Our bigs, they probably don’t get enough credit for how good we are offensively, because obviously Walter is such an efficient scorer, Alijah’s been so good for us and Will has really taken it up a notch, right? Those three, and Denzel (Aberdeen) obviously. I mean, he’s been great the majority of the year as well. And those guys have the ball in their hands a lot, they make a lot of plays and they deserve a lot of the credit. But I think we probably have the easiest frontcourt in America to play with, with the way we play, three out, two in, obviously having two big guys on the floor, it’s not easy to do and to be able to be smooth offensively the way we are, Condo (Alex Condon), Tommy (Haugh), Sam (Alexis), even Rueben (Chinyelu), they deserve a lot of credit for the way we move the ball, and kind of get to the second and third side offensively and what you obviously do a great job of recognizing and realizing is how effective our bigs are carving out space for our guards in the paint, in and around the rim and a lot of those two-point field goals,” Golden said. “Our guards shoot an incredible number from two, their two-point field goal percentage is just elite, I mean it’s just absurd and a big part of it is when they get in there and they’re finishing around the rim, our bigs are taking the rim pressure away, with their bodies and their physicality.”
In a thrilling game against Tennessee, Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. suffered an apparent ankle injury in the first half. However, to the relief of Gators fans, Clayton Jr. made a triumphant return in the second half to help lead his team to victory.Despite the injury scare, Clayton Jr. showed incredible resilience and determination as he fought through the pain to rejoin his teammates on the court. His presence was immediately felt as he made crucial plays and helped to solidify the Gators’ defense.
This display of toughness and leadership from Clayton Jr. not only inspired his teammates but also served as a reminder of his importance to the team. His return in the second half was a turning point in the game, and his performance was instrumental in securing the win for Florida.
As the Gators continue their season, Walter Clayton Jr.’s return from injury will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining moment of strength and perseverance. Gators fans can rest assured knowing that they have a player like Clayton Jr. who is willing to give his all for the team, no matter the circumstances.

Tennessee basketball injury, roster vs Florida: Igor Milicic Jr out
Igor Milicic Jr. is out for Tennessee basketball against Florida with flu-like symptoms.
The No. 8 Vols (17-4, 4-4 SEC) are down to seven available scholarship players against the No. 6 Gators (18-2, 5-2) on Saturday (noon ET, ESPN) at Food City Center.
Guard Zakai Zeigler is also out against the Gators with a right knee injury. He was injured late in the first half against Kentucky on Tuesday. He returned to play all 20 second-half minutes
Milicic did not practice Friday due to illness. He was listed as probable on the Friday SEC injury report then upgraded to available two hours before tipoff, but his status changed as he did not go through warmups. The 6-foot-10 forward is averaging 10.4 points and a team-leading 8.1 rebounds.
Darlinstone Dubar and Jordan Gainey are starting in place of Milicic and Zeigler, respectively. Bishop Boswell and Cade Phillips are the only reserves.

The Vols opened the season with 11 scholarship players. Sophomore forward J.P. Estrella had season-ending foot surgery in November and sophomore guard Cam Carr elected to leave the team in late December, dropping that number to nine and leaving Tennessee susceptible to Saturday’s situation.
Tennessee lost 73-43 to Florida on Dec. 7, its first loss this season after opening 14-0 for the second time in program history.

As fans eagerly await the outcome of the game, they will be showing their support for the team and cheering them on from the sidelines. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery for Milicic Jr and a successful game for the Tennessee basketball team. Go Volunteers! #TennesseeBasketball #InjuryUpdate #GoVols

Tennessee basketball gets another shot at Florida weeks after the Gators handed the Vols their first loss of the 2024-25 season.
The No. 8 Vols (17-4, 4-4 SEC) play the No. 6 Gators (18-2, 5-2) on Saturday (noon ET, ESPN) at Food City Center, a rematch from the Jan. 7 disaster in Gainesville when the Vols lost 73-43.
Here is what to know about the matchup:
Is Darlinstone Dubar a gamechanger for Tennessee?
Darlinstone Dubar played his biggest role yet for Tennessee against Kentucky. The senior guard played 17 minutes and was aggressive on offense and defense in the Vols’ loss on Tuesday.

Dubar took a season-high seven 3-pointers, while he had two steals and a block and created multiple possessions for the Vols with hustle plays in the final minutes.
“He was just more aggressive and more assertive, which we need him to,” guard Jahmai Mashack said. ” I think that is going to be big in the coming games in the SEC and the teams that we are going to be able to go against. We are going to need a guy like D-Stone, especially when he comes in to change the games for us. I think he is doing it and I think he has worked hard enough. That is what we expect him to do is just be more aggressive.”
The Hofstra transfer is averaging 3.9 points and 2.6 rebounds in 10.6 minutes per game. He also played 17 minutes at Texas on Jan. 11, where he attempted five 3-pointers and had six rebounds.
Florida is another elite offense for Tennessee’s standout defense
Tennessee faced Auburn and Kentucky in its past two games. The Tigers and Wildcats rank No. 1 and No. 3 nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency.

“Our game plans are almost (always) we don’t ever want to let people get out and get easy baskets,” Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said. “So that’s transition, defense, rebounding, taking care of the ball. If you do that and, hopefully, play defense how we’re capable of, it gives us a chance at the end.”
How Tennessee lost by 30 in first meeting with Florida
Tennessee was 14-0 when it went to Florida in the first week of SEC play. The Vols were thumped by 30 by the Gators.
It was UT’s lowest-scoring game under Barnes. It also was the worst shooting game in Barnes’ 10 seasons as the Vols shot 21.4%.
Tennessee was outrebounded 55-38 and Florida had a 40-14 margin in points in the paint.

Tennessee vs Florida score prediction
Florida 71, Tennessee 67: Tennessee has been too iffy in the past two weeks to know what to expect each game. Florida has been more consistent.

Tennessee basketball will face off against Florida in a highly anticipated matchup this weekend. Both teams are coming off of impressive wins and will be looking to continue their success in this game.In terms of injury updates, Tennessee is expected to have a fully healthy roster for this game. Key players such as Jaden Springer and Keon Johnson have been playing well and will be crucial in leading the team to victory.
On the other hand, Florida is dealing with some injury concerns. Key player Keyontae Johnson is still sidelined after collapsing on the court earlier in the season. His absence has been felt by the team, but they have been able to rally and win games without him.
As for the score prediction, I believe Tennessee will come out on top in this game. The Volunteers have been playing solid basketball and have the depth and talent to outmatch Florida. I predict a final score of Tennessee 75, Florida 65.
Be sure to tune in to see this exciting matchup and see if my prediction holds true. Let’s go Vols!
