Jalen Hurts injury update: Eagles QB out for Week 17 vs. Cowboys due to concussion; Kenny Pickett to start

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is officially out against the Dallas Cowboys for Sunday’s Week 17 game. Hurts remains in concussion protocol, meaning Kenny Pickett will be the starter.

Eagles fans had their holiday season somewhat spoiled when Hurts exited Philadelphia’s Week 16 showdown against the Commanders early after suffering a head injury. With Hurts out, the Commanders rallied to pull off an upset that hindered Philadelphia’s chances at obtaining the NFC’s top playoff seed.

Hurts received a “did not practice” designation during Wednesday’s projected injury report (the Eagles did not practice), and again on Thursday. On Friday, Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni gave an update, saying, “It’s going to be tough for him to make it.”

This is similar to what he said on Thursday, when he noted that Hurts is still in the concussion protocol ahead of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.

NFL Media reported later Thursday that these revelations suggest Hurts remains in the early stages of the NFL’s five-step protocol for returning from a concussion.

Backups Pickett and Tanner McKee were seen warming up alongside Ian Book, who was recently signed to the Eagles’ practice squad, during practice this week. Pickett, who played in the majority of this past Sunday’s game, was listed as limited during Wednesday’s projected practice with a rib injury, and a full participant Thursday. He said he doesn’t expect to have any limitations on Sunday.

“Something I’ll have to deal with,” Pickett said while alluding to his injury.

Hurts suffered the injury during a 13-yard run on the Eagles’ second series against the Commanders. He left the game after getting tackled by Commanders veteran linebacker Bobby Wagner. Ahead 7-0 at that point, Pickett entered the game and immediately completed a 10-yard pass to A.J. Brown. The duo capped off the drive with a 4-yard touchdown, Pickett’s first touchdown since being traded from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia this past offseason.

Pickett led the Eagles on five more scoring drives, but Philadelphia came up short after Commanders rookie Jayden Daniels led Washington on a successful two-minute drill that was capped off by his game-winning touchdown pass to Jamison Crowder with six seconds left.

The loss prevented the Eagles from clinching their third division title in four years. Philadelphia can, however, take the NFC East division title again if they defeat the rival Cowboys on Sunday (they’ll also clinch the NFC East if the Commanders lose to the Falcons). The Eagles may be counting on Pickett in that game if Hurts remains in the protocol.

While he’s only in his third season, Pickett played in a similar circumstance during his rookie season in Pittsburgh. At 3-7 through 10 games, the Steelers had virtually no margin for error as far as their playoff hopes were concerned. While Pittsburgh ultimately did not make the playoffs that year, they got close after Pickett helped lead them to a 6-1 record during their final seven games. That stretch included three game-winning drives led by Pickett, the first quarterback taken in the 2022 NFL Draft

“I thought Kenny responded really well as far as just hopping in there,” Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore said of Pickett’s performance against the Commanders. “I thought the way he handled the first drive, he hopped in there, it was a third-and-7, and converted. Resulted in a touchdown that drive.

“I thought he certainly did a lot of good things in the game. Ultimately we all collectively didn’t do enough to finish that game. I think it’s an awesome opportunity for us to all learn and grow from, but I thought Kenny battled the whole entire way.”

The Philadelphia Eagles will be without starting quarterback Jalen Hurts for their crucial Week 17 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys. Hurts suffered a concussion during last week’s game against the Washington Football Team and has been ruled out for this week’s game.

In his absence, rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett will get the start for the Eagles. Pickett, who was selected in the first round of this year’s draft, has seen limited playing time this season but will now have the opportunity to showcase his skills in a must-win game for Philadelphia.

The Eagles will need to win their final game of the season in order to secure a playoff spot, making this matchup against the Cowboys even more crucial. With Hurts sidelined, all eyes will be on Pickett as he looks to lead the Eagles to victory and keep their postseason hopes alive. Stay tuned for more updates on Hurts’ status and Pickett’s performance in this pivotal game.

  • Memphis Grizzlies Make Ja Morant Injury Announcement vs Pelicans

Memphis Grizzlies Make Ja Morant Injury Announcement vs Pelicans

The Memphis Grizzlies have started their 2024-25 campaign with an impressive 21-10 record, taking them into third place in the Western Conference. Despite having the fifth-easiest schedule in the NBA through 31 games, the Grizzlies have shown enough to prove they can compete with the best of the best.

Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant has been the star of the show in Memphis as usual, but the 25-year-old All-Star has had a hard time staying on the court. Morant has already missed 12 games this season, and an early departure in Friday’s matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans has left fans worried once again.

After Morant spent some time in the locker room, the Grizzlies announced an update.

Per their official PR account, the Grizzlies have announced that Morant is doubtful to return against the Pelicans on Friday night with a right shoulder injury.

The Grizzlies jumped out to take as much as a 22-point lead in New Orleans, but Morant’s injury is certainly not what the team needs. Pelicans center Daniel Theis set a hard screen on Morant in the third quarter, causing him to go down hard, and would immediately be escorted to the locker room holding his neck/upper back.

While the Grizzlies look like they will have no trouble leaving New Orleans with a win, they cannot afford to lose Morant for an extended time. Memphis’ next 11 games are all against competitive Western Conference teams, nine of which are on the road.

Morant will finish Friday with 25 points and 7 assists in just 25 minutes of action, another productive night from the Grizzlies star.

Yuki Kawamura Makes NBA History in Grizzlies vs. Lakers

The Memphis Grizzlies have announced that star point guard Ja Morant will be out indefinitely after suffering a sprained ankle in their recent game against the New Orleans Pelicans. Morant, who has been a key player for the Grizzlies this season, went down in the third quarter of the game and had to be helped off the court.

This news comes as a blow to the Grizzlies, who are currently fighting for a playoff spot in the competitive Western Conference. Morant has been averaging 19.3 points, 5.8 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game this season and his absence will surely be felt on both ends of the court.

Despite this setback, the Grizzlies are confident in their depth and ability to continue competing without Morant. Backup point guard Tyus Jones will likely see an increase in playing time in Morant’s absence, and the team will need other players to step up and fill the void left by their star guard.

We wish Ja Morant a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, the Grizzlies will continue to push forward and fight for a playoff spot in the tough Western Conference.

  • Injury Notes: Leonard, Suns, Green, Harris, Banchero

Injury Notes: Leonard, Suns, Green, Harris, Banchero

Clippers forward Kawhi Leonard will not play on Friday against Golden State and he will not travel with the team for its upcoming three-game road trip, writes Broderick Turner of The Los Angeles Times (subscriber link). Leonard has yet to play this season as he recovers from a right knee injury.

However, the two-time Finals MVP continues to make progress — he went through a 5-on-5 practice on Thursday and he will practice with the G League’s San Diego Clippers while the NBA club is out of town.

Making sure he’s doing everything so this doesn’t occur again so we can kind of monitor the fluid and see how it’s working,” head coach Tyronn Lue said. “So far it’s been really good and we just want to continue to keep progressing.”

For what it’s worth, Leonard released a vague teaser video (via Twitter) on Friday saying he’ll be back “pretty soon.”

Here are a few more injury notes from around the NBA:

    • The Suns will be without All-Star guard Devin Booker for the fourth straight game on Friday when Phoenix faces Dallas, per Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic. Booker is recovering from a left groin strain. Grayson Allen (concussion protocol) and Bol Bol (left knee contusion) will also be sidelined for the Suns.
    • After previously being listed as questionable, Warriors forward/center Draymond Green has been downgraded to doubtful ahead of Friday’s matchup with the Clippers, tweets Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN. An eight-time All-Defensive member, Green is dealing with a contusion on the left side of his lower back.
    • Magic guard Gary Harris may suit up on Friday vs. New York after missing the past 13 games with a left hamstring strain. He’s listed as probable, according to Jason Beede of The Orlando Sentinel (Twitter links), who notes that while Paolo Banchero is still out, his injury designation has changed from torn right oblique to “return to competition reconditioning.” Banchero, who hasn’t played since Oct. 30, has been ramping up his on-court activities, but he’s not doing contact work yet.

Injury Notes: Leonard, Suns, Green, Harris, Banchero

    – Kawhi Leonard continues to be rehabbing from his ACL injury and is expected to miss the entire 2021-2022 NBA season. The LA Clippers star is taking his time with his recovery to ensure he is fully healed before returning to the court.

    – The Phoenix Suns have been dealing with a rash of injuries recently, with both Chris Paul and Devin Booker missing time due to various ailments. The team is hopeful that both stars will be back on the court soon, but their absence has been felt in their recent games.

    – Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors is dealing with a back injury that has kept him out of action for several games. The team is being cautious with Green’s recovery, as they want him to be fully healthy before returning to the lineup.

    – Tobias Harris of the Philadelphia 76ers has been dealing with a knee injury that has limited his playing time recently. The team is monitoring his progress closely and is hopeful that he will be back on the court soon.

    – Duke freshman Paolo Banchero suffered a sprained ankle in a recent game and is expected to miss some time as he recovers. Banchero, one of the top prospects in college basketball, is being evaluated by the team’s medical staff to determine the extent of his injury and the timeline for his return.

  • Knicks to reportedly sign Landry Shamet, now healthy after shoulder injury cost him roster spot out of camp

Knicks to reportedly sign Landry Shamet, now healthy after shoulder injury cost him roster spot out of camp

    shamet-usatsi.png
    USATSI

The New York Knicks have agreed to a deal with veteran guard Landry Shamet, according to ESPN. Shamet actually spent training camp with the Knicks, and was initially considered a lock to make the roster. However, after he suffered a dislocated shoulder in the preseason, the Knicks waived him with an eye on an eventual reunion.

To make that reunion happen, they selected Shamet No. 2 overall in the G-League draft. This way, they would retain his rights and he could rehab under their supervision with the Westchester Knicks. After playing three games and averaging just under 11 points in Westchester, Shamet now appears healthy and ready to contribute to the big-league Knicks.

Where exactly Shamet will fit in for the Knicks remains to be seen. The veteran shooter would have an obvious niche on most teams as a reserve sniper, but the Knicks already rank second in the NBA in 3-point percentage, hitting just under 40% of their triples this season, and with the league’s No. 2 ranked offense, points haven’t exactly been at a premium. Where they actually could improve is their 3-point volume, as New York ranks only 20th in attempts from deep this season. Introducing Shamet to the rotation could compel the Knicks to take more 3s.

But coach Tom Thibodeau runs a notoriously short rotation, relying primarily on his starters to carry his teams through games. The Knicks already give reserve guards Deuce McBride and Cam Payne roughly 42 combined minutes per night, so Shamet may not see much playing time initially. Injuries are sadly a feature of the regular season, though, and having a spare scorer lying around tends to be helpful. With Shamet and Precious Achiuwa now back, the Knicks are only waiting on the return of one injured player, Mitchell Robinson, to get back to full strength.

The New York Knicks are set to bolster their roster with the addition of sharpshooting guard Landry Shamet, according to reports. Shamet, who missed out on a roster spot out of camp due to a shoulder injury, is now healthy and ready to make an impact for the Knicks.

The 24-year-old guard is known for his three-point shooting ability, making him a valuable asset for any team looking to space the floor and add scoring punch. Shamet has shown flashes of his potential in his young career, and the Knicks are hoping he can provide a spark off the bench and help them push for a playoff spot.

With Shamet now back to full health, the Knicks are excited to see what he can bring to the table and how he can help them as they continue to build towards a successful season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Notre Dame star lineman Rylie Mills out of CFP with knee injury

Notre Dame star lineman Rylie Mills out of CFP with knee injury

A Notre Dame defense that has overcome key injuries all season must do so again as standout defensive lineman Rylie Mills will miss the remainder of the College Football Playoff with a right knee injury.

Coach Marcus Freeman on Monday confirmed the outlook for Mills, who was injured while sacking Indiana‘s Kurtis Rourke early in the second half of Friday’s 27-17 first-round win at Notre Dame Stadium. Mills, a senior and a captain, leads Notre Dame in both sacks (7.5) and tackles for loss (8.5).

Following the game, Freeman told ESPN’s Scott Van Pelt that Mills’ injury did not appear to be season-ending and that there was “optimism” Notre Dame could regain him for the CFP quarterfinal against No. 2 seed Georgia on Jan. 1 at the Allstate Sugar Bowl.

Mills’ absence stings a Fighting Irish defense that already has lost All-America cornerback Benjamin Morrison and rush ends Jordan Botelho and Boubacar Traore. The defensive line had just regained senior Howard Cross III, who played against Indiana after missing Notre Dame’s final three regular-season games.

Junior Gabriel Rubio replaced Mills during the season half against Indiana and finished with two tackles.

Notre Dame got some good injury news as offensive tackle Charles Jagusah, a projected starter at left tackle who sustained a torn pectoral muscle in preseason camp, is available for the Sugar Bowl. He recently began practicing again.

Starting offensive lineman Rocco Spindler, who started against Indiana before leaving with an undisclosed injury, is questionable for Georgia, Freeman said, while linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is also questionable.

Notre Dame star lineman Rylie Mills out of CFP with knee injury

Unfortunately, Notre Dame will be without one of their standout players, Rylie Mills, for the College Football Playoff due to a knee injury. Mills, a key contributor on the defensive line, suffered the injury during a recent practice and will be unable to compete in the upcoming playoff games.

Mills, a highly touted recruit out of high school, has been a force for the Fighting Irish this season, recording multiple tackles for loss and quarterback pressures. His absence will undoubtedly be felt on the field, as Notre Dame looks to compete against some of the top teams in the nation.

Despite this setback, the Fighting Irish will need to rally together and rely on their depth to fill the void left by Mills. The team’s resilience and determination will be put to the test as they aim to make a statement in the College Football Playoff.

We wish Rylie Mills a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field soon. In the meantime, let’s show our support for Notre Dame as they continue their quest for a national championship. #GoIrish #RylieMillsStrong

  • Heat quick Johnson opens up on ‘bizarre’ toe injury

Heat quick Johnson opens up on ‘bizarre’ toe injury

Spencer Johnson has lifted the lid on his comeback from a toe injury

Star Brisbane Heat paceman Spencer Johnson has opened up about his mystery toe injury, saying it’s even left multiple doctors and surgeons perplexed.

Johnson missed the first two games of the Big Bash season after snapping a tendon in his toe, but he returned in stunning fashion on Thursday night with career-best figures of 4-20 in Brisbane’s 33-run loss to the Scorchers in Perth.

Johnson marks first game of BBL|14 with four-wicket haul

After the match, Johnson showed off the intricate strapping on his right foot that is helping to ease the pain on his troublesome middle toe.

It’s an injury he will likely have to manage for the rest of the BBL campaign, and he has no idea when it will fully heal.

“I snapped my tendon in a Shield game about a month ago, and to be honest, we still don’t really know how it’s happened, or why it’s happened,” Johnson said.

“It’s such a bizarre injury. Four surgeons have looked at it, four sports doctors have looked at it, and they’re all mind blown.

“We’ve come up with a decent method to strap it, and hopefully that should be right for the rest of the season.”

Johnson said he’s not worrying too much about it despite the unknowns.

“It is such a bizarre thing, I could wake up tomorrow and it could be all right,” he said.

“It felt really good out there today, and we’re looking after it, we’ll manage it. It feels a bit weird we’re talking about a third toe.

“I missed a couple of games, but hopefully it will be all right.”

Thursday’s result improved the Scorchers’ record to 2-2 for the season, keeping them in the thick of the finals hunt.

But the form of opener Finn Allen is a worry, with the New Zealand blaster dismissed for another duck.

It means Allen has returned scores of 0, 0, four and six this season, and it remains to be seen whether he’ll be retained for Tuesday’s clash with the Strikers in Adelaide.

“He’s a match winner,” fellow Scorchers power hitter Nick Hobson said of Allen.

“He strikes such a high strike-rate, and sometimes that can be paired with low scores.

“But he’s got absolute backing, and he’s a match winner, and next time he could get a fast 100.

“By the end of the tournament, you never know, he could be a leading run scorer. It’s the nature of it. He’s world class.”

Former NBA player Heat quick Johnson recently spoke out about his ‘bizarre’ toe injury that ultimately ended his basketball career. Johnson revealed that he initially thought the injury was just a minor sprain, but it turned out to be much more serious than he had anticipated.

In an interview, Johnson described the pain and discomfort he experienced as a result of the injury, stating that it was unlike anything he had ever felt before. He explained that the injury affected his ability to move and play at a high level, ultimately leading to his decision to retire from professional basketball.

Despite the unfortunate end to his playing career, Johnson remains positive and grateful for the experiences and opportunities that basketball brought him. He expressed his appreciation for the support of his fans and teammates throughout his career.

Johnson’s story serves as a reminder of the physical toll that professional sports can take on athletes, and the importance of listening to one’s body and seeking proper medical attention when faced with injuries. We wish Heat quick Johnson all the best in his recovery and future endeavors.
